It’s Go Time! … Jets at Rangers

Game 18.
Jets at Rangers.

Ya boys come slip-sliding in, with three straight losses (0-2-1), and four in the last five (1-2-2).

They begin a four-game homestand, after which they will have already played 14 of their 24 home games this season. In other words, 17 of their final 27 will be on the road. In other words, these next four are pretty important.

Rick Nash (probable concussion) skated today, but will not play tonight. Neither will Ryan McDonagh (mystery injury, possibly a concussion),  Michael Del Zotto (suspected hip) or Arron Asham (back spasms). Dan Girardi (ankle/foot), Marc Staal (not sure why, possibly the flu, but he didn’t skate today) and and Darroll Powe (cleared from concussion) all will play.

Am I forgetting anybody?

I guess that means Stu Bickel and Steve Eminger both play on defense, and Chris Kreider plays up front … so no prucha’s tonight.

Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal against the Jets, who have won three of four on this five-game trip up here  from the Southeast. Oh, wait …

Don’t forget to vote in the Three Rangers Stars poll on the left <———— and to follow me on Twitter: @RangersReport.

Not sure if there is going to be a chance to do a live chat this week. Not looking good at all.

That’s the Jets’ WHA logo from 1972-74, above.

  7. game 18 isn’t must-win, even in a 48 game season but they need to look better than they did against Montreal

that said, they could lose 7-2 and still look better than they did on Saturday

fat guy – you in cage?…cage goes in water?…..shark in water?….farewell spanish lady

  13. eddie eddie eddie on

    Fat guy –

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte… just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn’t see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you’re in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail fin. What we didn’t know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named “The Battle of Waterloo” and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and screamin’ and sometimes the shark will go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark… he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin’ and the hollerin’, they all come in and they… rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us… he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened… waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

  14. Eddie, one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. Robert Shaw killed it. Should of won an award. That is an awesome scene on par with Kenneth Branaugh in Henry V in his band Of brothers plea.

  15. eddie eddie eddie on

papa – robert shaw killed everything he was in…remember Doyle Lonnigan?…ya follah?

  16. Worst PP was outworked by worst PK. Yes Carp, the ledge has fallen I believe. Either that or the games are just putting people to sleep. This is beginning to make golf look exciting.

  17. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Rangers improved their PP ranking just by not playing the last two days.

  18. Does anybody have a truly reasonable explanation why Richards is STILL on the top of the PP? Does he have naked pics of torts’ wife!

  19. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I’d say something clever, but it would become Carp’s intellectual property, and he doesn’t pay royalties.

  20. Well, that was better than the last home game. And better than that game vs. Chicago last year where it was 4-0 in about 30 seconds.

  21. “We’ll break down that first period, which didn’t have a lot of highlights, and we’ll also have Bill Pidto with the MSG150, which will have no highlights whatsoever.”

  22. eddie eddie eddie on

Budweiser accused of watering down their beer…hmmmmmmm cant believe that for one minute

  23. great period from boyle. he actually did not do anything bad. really didn’t do anything period but nothing bad…

now gabby is an assist man, did not see that morphing. he is mentally fragile..richards actually did not look horrible that period .

shoot the friggin puck from anywhere all the time, is that a complicated concept?

  24. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

_Too bad Hagelin’s not from Finland, or you could have had the Finnish-Finished-Can’t Finish line._

  25. CARP,
I called for an 8-0 drubbing earlier this morning, if you recall.

This team is an absolute horror-show.

  26. Out on Duval St with Mama. Checking in from time to time. How they looking?

E3 – Robert Shaw died too young.

  27. So far we have what, to me, seems like a serious of victimless crimes.

    What about the Goal?

  28. 1st goal could not get the puck past byfuglien and boom.

we suck..but gabby may pass the puck again.

  29. And that, as they say, is that…

Chances of the Rangers scoring three times in a game is astronomical at this point.

Too bad Cally has a shift that has the Rangers fans on their feet and the team collapses right after it.

Stepan doesn’t shoot the puck on a 3 on 1???

    This team is freakin’ clueless.

  30. LOL THAT 3-ON-1 non-play was THE PLAY OF THE CENTURY

I’ve never seen such utter-cluelessness in my life.

  31. dont worry we have gabby after all he is a elite player just ask the talent evaluators on this site along with teeth, and boyle…..

good news we got powe back and don’t worry they will be better when asham comes back!!!!!

shott the friggin puck again how complicated is that????

  32. Boyle really is a moron.

To paraphrase R. Lee Ermey “Six foot eight? I didn’t know they stacked that high”

    Keeping it tasteful, Carp. ;-)

  33. Seriously. For what it’s worth, Tort, on _Behind the Bench_ , was pretty “into” Miller. Definitely said him being here for the rest of the season isn’t a done deal yet but seems like he might be.

  34. nice to see calahan play like he can…

good penalty by boyle, he cannot do anything right.

no talk about sitting his ass down either.. incredible…..

  35. Captain Cally is showing why he’s earned the “C”

Brad Richard$ ought to be forced to watch film of Cally for 24 hours straight before the next game

  36. Callahan is playing out of his mind. If his play and spirit doesn’t wake up the team I don’t know what would get the team going.

  37. Slow Metabolism Guy on

are we allowed to do that to the other goalie?

I know this isnt our real team on the ice, but the team that we do have on the ice stinks

  38. I think the underlying problem with shooting is the terrible passing and recieving passes. Players are in the lanes by the time they gain control of a pass.

  39. Okay, game over. I don’t know how many games NYR has won when allowing 3 goals under Torts, but I’ll say fewer than ten.

  40. G’night all…no chance in hell the Rangers can light the lamp 4 times to salvage this game.

Great to see Cally giving it his all, but the Rangers still need an awful lot of help.

  41. Carp,

I know I asked why Torts criticized Callahan…it’s games like this why I question Torts methods. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not wrong to ask Callahan to improve…but to me, he has bigger fish to fry than the call out the guy to the press with the most heart on the team.

  42. Mike S, this is the best I’ve seen Callahan play this season. It may have something to do with that.

  43. 3rd goal all bickels fault. went out to the point, tipped the puck did not ge tit out and boom.

when jokinen scores 2 goals you know you suck.

but elite gabby is running on all cylindars tonight. i like the floating on the last shift….

he said nah… out of the play, no biggie.

  44. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Maybe they can petition to have this game not count since Winnipeg should really be in the Western Conference.

  45. whoever that was in front of the net that tried to kneel down instead of play defense should get benched.

  46. we absolutely cannot trade the game changer Misses Gaborik. He is world class…

    what a joke….the floater….

  47. OK after seeing that break-in, I finally agree. Richards sucks!

He should have attacked the crease, instead he floated. lazy ass play.

  48. stepan is a good player rand so are hagelin but man they need a lot of opptys to produce there goals..

hagelin has oppty. every game and same with stepan….

again richards has not been horrible but he really has been nothing. same with gaborik.. boyle only fell once or twice that period. boyle like 6 ft 1 195 or something!!!

but lets sit kreider over Boyle since boyle brings so much to the team..AFTER ALL HE IS GREAT IN THE LOCKERROOM. Whatever that bull means….

  49. 3rd goal all on bickell.. he jsut is not smart, things he is better then he is…

he should never be more then 15 feet from the goalie at all times….

is gabby a line killer… any line he goes on starts to suck and he is always talk about how they need to learn about eachothers game and other bull..

he is a fraud. worse 40 goal scorer I have seen since jonathan chechoo….

  50. Olga Folkyerself on

If you can’t beat the team just below you in the standings, they won’t be below you much longer.

  51. With exception of Callahan and without of alien Nash, all Rangers team looks like a faceless mass, type of not so fast moving TTL (Total Talents Less) blubber.

  52. yep salty gabby has been great. he looks great when he gives the puck up in his zone and he looks great when he goes around the goal crease in the offensive zone and then misses the net.

my bad gabby is great give the pansie an extension, for looking good and getting nothing done…

  53. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Yeah, I’d rather trade Gaborik for a 10 goal scorer who tries really, really hard.

  54. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I know Kreider doesn’t get a ton of minutes, but how does he only have 5 shots in 10 games? Guy needs to get to the net.

  55. salty I cannot spell but i know what the hell I am talking about.

gaborik is the worse top 20 goal scorer I have seen in a long time…

he is a faster steve vickers….he can only score goals and when he is not scoring goals he is nothing.

btw he has been bad on the PP for 2 + years, i thought he has such a great shot…..

  56. This team sure looks to me like one where the coach cannot figure out how to rectify whatever the problem with his players is.

He looks lost on the bench, not showing any of the animation we saw so frequently last year.

The players are tight beyond belief and accomplishing nothing.

The only skaters that look interested are Stepan, Cally and Miller.

Are they all waiting for Nash to return? For the coach to be fired?

    OMG, what a mess…

  57. actually gaborik reminds me of another guy, Semin. I know they are both misunderstood…

that’s gabby, alex semin.. soft, hot dog, defensive liability. usually small in big games….

  58. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I think Gabby being the _worse_ 40 goal scorer might be the comment of the night.

  59. he scores 40 every other year. he scores in 5 to 2 games usually and gives up goals by the bushel. and he is good for one tweeked hammy a season at least..

gabby has won as many titles as semin….

  60. Rangers need to get 100% healthy as soon as possible because the team that is playing tonight will not make the playoffs.

  61. eddie eddie eddie on

salty – leave stuart alone……i know what exactly what he is saying and i agree completely with him…

  62. That shift with the blocked shots by Cally is an early nominee for the No Guts, No Glory contest with TSN..

  63. ovechkin hits more players in 20 games then gabby has in his career….

gabby he less checks then boyle has points on the season…

keep on telling yourselves if they just surround gabby with the right guys it will click…

jagr was great with straka and nylander not exactly adam oates or yzerman…..

  64. gabby for o’reilly and another very good young player and move on………..

forget it we cannot trade gabby his shootout aresenal of incredible moves is priceless….

  65. why would gabby be the problem, rangers have 42 goals on the season in the bottom 5 in hockey..

nah they have too much offense my bad………

  66. Meh. Forget it guys. Too much nutso-ism in here. Gaborik is not the problem. You don’t get more offense by trading your only 40+ goal scorer.

  67. I cannot even think if three worse players than I see in Gabby but especially in Richards and Boyle.

Hey Brian Boyle, the year you scored 20 goals, remember, you took skating lessons and then when you got on the ice, you actually skated. Maybe get back to that and stop gliding around like the leftover scraps from the 2003 first round that you are when you decide not to move your feet.

Richards, I dont know what to say anymore. I couldnt care less if he is trying or not. He is useless.

They are the opposite of what they were last year and they are pathetic beyond belief. And obviously that makes me pretty annoyed.

Can we just go back to the Elvis and Eddie Murphy jokes? That was fun.

  68. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Rangers have 42 goals this season, so trade the 40 goal scorer. Makes sense.

  69. eddie eddie eddie on

manny – Gabby is supposedly a scorer…rangers cant score….how else do you see it?

  70. v
I haven’t watched many games lately because I (wisely I think) didn’t opt for my local cable company’s (cogeco here) rip off $180 for 6 months of all sports package.

Tonight the games on TSN so I’m watching and I am appalled at how bad this is. I know there’s some on here who are pleading patience (kudos to them for their patience) but this is reeking of a team waiting for their coach to be fired.

The problem with the injuries is they create an excuse for losing. That may be right, but it’s not an excuse for no passion and I’m seeing no passion.

Without a doubt, signs of a lost team. Some sort of spark is desperately needed.

I dont see it coming from the coach, so it’s gotta be via a player (Nash perhaps, if/when he returns) or a call-up (Haley and/or McIlrath) or trade.

Why not call up those 2 and send down Kreider or Mashinter and Gilroy or Bickel??

  71. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Look, Gaborik obviously need to be better, but trading a 40 goal scorer for a 25 goal scorer is not going to help your offense.

  72. leetchhalloffame on

Such high hopes for this team this season. Think they’d like a do-over on the Prust decision? This team has NO heart. FIRE SATHER!

  73. Right, eddie. Trade the guy leading your team in goals for someone who can’t score nearly as much under any system. Great idea!

    Gravy put it well.

  74. Lest the King thinks he is getting off, let’s also point out that two of those goals were the result of massively over-committing to the strong side and giving out a huge, juicy rebound in front of an open net. Hell even if jokinen had someone draped on him he probably could have potted those.

  76. eddie eddie eddie on

Well manny and gravy – i see your point….take away his burst against Boston and Gabby has 4 more goals than the rangers’ unleader – Brian Boyle

  77. And there it is again, Great job there Hank. When we’re missing lots of our NHL caliber players, those 4 goals against ain’t gonna cut it.

  78. And there’s the argument against Gaborik. He scores too many goals at once…..Yup. Logic prevails.

  79. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Take away Jokinnen’s 2 goals tonight, and he has 3. So, if we take away goals from Gaborik, he hasn’t scored as many goals. True story.

  80. This game is being played in the twilight zone with Benny Hill music playing in the background.

  81. It’s not fair to blame Gaborik. How about Richards, the guy that is supposed to be his Center…

  82. saying gabby is not pulling his weight is blasphemy.

he looks so good not pulling his weight watch it the experts on the blog will tell you that your eyes are lieing….

  83. eddie eddie eddie on

Gravy – dont get me wrong….I am a Ranger fan….I want Gabby to score every shift……

  84. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

stuart, no one is saying that he’s playing well right now. but trading him for a 20 G player is ludicrous.

  85. eddie eddie eddie on

Manny – agreed…Richards sux……..that is a big problem as gabby cant create anything by himself

  86. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

e3, I’m with you. And Gaborik has been awful most of this season. I just think some of the comments out of frustration from some posters don’t make much sense.

  87. Then we are back in agreement and thus friends again.

We have some good stuff to build on going here.

  88. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Well, they would have had a PPG if the Jets didn’t have a goalie in.

  89. gaborik makes $7 mill. the comments are commensurate on his pay and previous results..

gabby needs to play harder.. take hits to make plays…

  90. eddie eddie eddie on

Stuart – exactly…..Richards and Gabby make a combined what 13-14 Million Per year…. That should be buying more results….just sayin

  91. That second Kane goal really hurt. And I thought Girardi should have passed it across right at the end there.

  92. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

They need to play like they did in the 3rd period. Not blaming Hank for the loss, but he needs to stop that 4th goal.

  93. gabby with a whale of a game. dominate game by gabby and richards..

the excuses will start. gabby does not have a guy to set him up, blah blah blah.

bickell screw up in his zone on goal 3 and henrik wit ha softie on goal 4..

    woulda coulda shoulda.. got nada.

boyle is good in the dressing room btw guys….

  94. We should have put O’Boyle in front of the net on the power play. Maybe he could have toughnessed or physicaled the puck in to tie the game.

  95. What exactly was Sully diagramming, how to not score? Don’t worry Sully, they’ve got that part of the game down pat.

  96. it is almost like richards has a hole in his stick. the guy gets more shots and passes blocked then i have seen in years…..

boyle in front of the net is a good idea except he would fall on the ice and block a ranger shot.

ranger announcers they lost.. the callahan mythology in full bore tonight.

    they lost……………….

  97. I have been at so many of these type games over yrs n yrs it seems like a sick joke. Thank god I can just shut it off. No room for error on a fragile team n Hank let’s a brutal one in. UGH

  98. stuart, theres more guys than marion gaborik on this team that sucks lately. we get it., u dont like him

  99. This one was doomed from the moment Olli Jokinen scored. Bad luck, puck finds him with a wide open net, then he gets another lucky bounce right to him with an open net. Olli Jokinen scores 2 goals against your team, you know your team is struggling mightily.

  100. gabby has the highest paycheck even more then buck tooth buy out candidate richards.

stop with the gaborik apology tour and i will stop also.

he is NOT ELITE.. not even close….

a nice soft goal scorer. who plays hard when he feels like it, that is not elite…

  101. I’m pissed but ain’t jumpin off the ledge just yet-last playoff spot is right there, and Nash will eventually play again

  102. this team will make the playoffs and they need to also make changes. torts is so friggin stubborn. how can you not sit boyle down?

get mcdonagh and mdz and nash back and they will be better.

  103. Salty, it’s not saying much, but better than putrid.

On Richards? He was awful tonight. Gravy legs and giving pucks up on both bluelines….unacceptable by him right now in the bad spot he’s in. Those basics need to come first right now. Guy is fading. FAST.

  104. eddie eddie eddie on

Gravy – while it does sound like excessive whining….and I apologize…….your highest paid player needs to be your best player…..

  105. emminger played good. i play him over bickel and gilroy also. gilroy cannot score.. if gilroy cannot score what is his role…

mashinter and kreider played under 5 min each.. 1 of them goes down when the great asham comes back….

  106. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

e3, not arguing that Gaborik hasn’t been good, not arguing that he needs to step up with Nash out. But, I disagree that they need to ship him out for a less productive player because he is a _bad_ 40 goal scorer.

  107. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Kreider took and a penalty and was lost on the 2nd or 3rd goal. Not a good game.

  108. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Miller gets to play because he hits, forechecks, and backchecks. Kreider has not done any of that consistently.

  109. i shipped gabby out for multiple players…

i am not giving him away.. If O’reilly is as good as I have heard(I cannot recall seeing him play) get O’reilly and more.. why not. they need depth and $$ flexibility… the high end guys have not been high end…imagine if the 3rd and 4th lines actually have guys who can play and score….

gabby and nash are not malkin and crosby.. they are not carrying to the cup, get multiple, good and versatile players. with the goal getting size, speed, and youth.

    again why not???

  110. this team wins on d and goaltending so the high end offense only guys makes zero sense….

  111. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

O’Reilly is not the answer. Don’t want a guy who holds out and says he deserves to be captain.

  112. eddie eddie eddie on

Gravy – I hear ya….I would, however, trade gabby for a less productive, CHEAPER, but more physical, 28-30 goal scorer…especially a young player….if such a player exists…

  113. eddie eddie eddie on

OLGA – where are you on the gabby talk?….do the hawks trade Towes and P. Kane for Gabby…i make that deal :)

  114. Olga Folkyerself on

The only way that happens eddie, is if Sather was GM of the Hawks.

ungh…. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

  115. again i am not familiar with O’reiily trade gabby for something else…

weiss, mattias, and a high pick for gabby and some addtl 2nd tier prospect.

weiss contract up at end of the year, he is a very good 2 way player, mattias has serious upsaide, and a pick. again get more depth, money flexibility long term, etc…

if gabby is as great as I am told there should be a huge market for is elite skills…………….

  116. stuart, what you and many other RR bloggers have a habit of doing is undervaluing goal scoring and overvaluing intangibles. You win hockey games by scoring goals. It truly is the simplest concept to grasp.

  117. IMO first time in a long time, end of third period they looked like they wanted and were trying to win

too little too late, but glimmer of hope

  118. I’m not saying that you’re guilty of the “overvaluing intangibles,” stuart. But you are undervaluing goal scoring.

  119. tiki, gabby does not score enough. he has 7 goals.. he have 13 like stamkos i take all his other baggage.

the rangers do not have enough guys who score period…boyle, powe, halpern, asham, others never score. they rely on 2 lines and those 2 lines do not have enough high end scorers. therefore they need to add lines, ie move gabby for 2 guys who can play and score. now you have 3 lines who can score…

i just disagree and i realize you need t oscore to win.. magic # is 3 goals per night…if they do that they will win a bunch of games……

  120. gabbys what 32 now? you think hes gonna pump out 40 a year from here on out?(i said pump) no, hes not. we need some of these supposed high end prospects like kreider, stepan, miller hags, to take over this team soon. poor gabby, hes still leading the team in goals. hes assing it and hes still better than 3/4 of the team. i dont like his disappearing acts either guys, but hes in a slump. he’ll bust out. (i said bust hehe)

  121. stuart, I’m not going to get into a whole thing with you and a few others, and I’m not defending the guy because I’ve said a number of times that he’s played like crap. But you don’t sit Boyle because he’s better than Mashinter, Powe, Halpern, Asham and at this point Kreider. He had five hits tonight (tied with the captain), two of them were huge. He was 6-2 on faceoffs. He took a penalty (aggressive kind, not lazy kind). He leads the team and is among the league leaders in hits.

He’s a guy they need to get going, just like the top skill guys. They’re a better team when he’s playing better. That’s why.

You don’t sit him because a couple of people on a blog don’t like him.

  122. gabby turned 32 a few weeks ago he is not exactly ancient…

why cant he be a 40 goal guy? the yare paying him to be…

again they need more guys who can score period. miller was – 2 tonight….kreider needs to play much more aggresive then he does…

  123. carp i just disagree on boyle respectfully. if he got the puck deep, cycled on occassion, did not wind up in the sin bin maybe..

if you put him on the 4th line I am absolutely fine with that…he is not a top 9 player. he jsut does not do anything well enough.. again have him replace a halpern that is fine with me they are both no offense guys but boyle is bigger and younger, maybe..

they are counting on stepan, cally, and hagelin to score and they are playing well but not big scorers..thsi team needs to change the equation…they do not have elite offensive talent and we need to come to grip with that and come to a plan b. gabby, nash ,and richards make about $20 mill, 1/3 of the cap more or less. what do they have 13 goals on the season!!!!

  124. Lundqvist looks like’s perpetually tripping face with those dilated pupils all the time…even with lights in his face.

  125. Matthias yes. big, fast, talented, has a chance if not him you get my point. I am not scouting for the Rangers and I see Mattihias when he plays the Rangers only so if he is not the right guy there are others…

they need to increase the talent base, not the high end talent base the talent base offensively in general. if that means trading gabby for 2 or 3 guys who can help in scoring by committee go for it….

  126. another problem rangers have played more home games then on the road also. gabby zero goals on the road btw..

gabby I cannot listen to since I know he does not put the effort of cally, girardi, and others…

  127. Adrian Dater

Scouts from the following Eastern NHL teams are at the Avs-Sharks game tonight…
Winnipeg, NY Rangers and Boston. Start your rumors now

  128. Carp BB took a awful penality. Ur right though about sitting him and ur right about people here not liking him, but your wrong not to take off the rose colored glasses on him. How u can say it was aggressive throwing a knee out late not lazy is just wrong. If the opposition did that to step or Nash the boards would be bashing Shanny again. Again he is a good PK and a 4th liner on a good team. Trade him, his value is something other teams might play too much for. Soft

  129. Picking 3 ranger stars is more challenging than solving a cryptoquote while being waterboarded. Painful to watch…this team can not play from behind everynight. Biggest difference between this year and last- I’m sure someone will come up with the stats to prove it- last year by 7:15 we always seemed to have the lead. No team is going to be very good at coming from behind when they have no powerplay… coming from behind in the games, coming from behind for the season, coming from behind in conditioning- 180 from last year.

  130. honest assesment of the talent..

on a very good team this is where the guys should play….

nash 1st line, gabby of present first line(I dislike his game), richards 3rd line at best.

cally, 2nd line, hagelin(2nd or 3rd cant score), and stepan(2nd or 3rd) this is there best line at present….

boyle(4th) pyat(4th) pose (4th), kreider, mashinter, and miller,,,,(wth line or AHL)… they do not have enough offensive talent…bottom line… add o’reilly and another top 2 line young guy…………..

  131. after all these years they still do not have 6 top line forwards…

bottom line. guys either too young, too old, or just not capable enough…

so you need to change the equation else you get the same results. they have a very good defense but offense is not the d’s specialty if they had more offense from the backline that would help also.. mdz still is not close to where they need him to be…

  132. Its a mess and I stand by my concern expressed earlier – it sure looks like the coach doesn’t know what to do to inject energy in his team. I’ve said it on here lately a few times based on video interviews and his quotes – he looks bewildered.

Definitely a change from last season when, if they were running around like headless chickens and accomplishing nothing, he always looked pissed and often called a timeout to lambast his players.

    Not this year.

Tonight he looked more dismayed than anything else.

He looked like his players played – wanting things to be different but dismayed that he was unable to figure out how to make them different.

I concur with those that say firing him now makes no sense – there’s not enough time for his replacement to make a difference.

Therefore, to me, it’s on Sather to act.

He needs to do something to inject a spark into this lineup.

He accomplished that 6 years ago by trading for Avery. He needs to explore doing something similar now. Maybe it’s as simple as demoting 2 and promoting Haley and McIlrath. I know if I was in charge Id be considering it.

Further evidence? I’m reading the same quotes from Tortorella now that I’ve read all season: ‘Encouraged about signs in this game that part of their game is starting to come…’

What game were you watching coach? Your team didn’t come to play until the 45 minute mark after they were down 3 to 1.

Then he says ‘need this type of effort plus players to get healthy’.

Where is the mantra about all teams get injuries and you gotta work through them?

I’ll tell you where – the coach is floating that because, as I just cited, he cannot figure it out himself.

The GM needs to step in here and help his coach. And his players….

  133. Olli Jokinen scored twice tonight. When he played here in NY, Torts couldn’t even get the guy up off his behind to go take a dump.

  134. Was it just me, or did that game remind everyone of the 20 or so other games the Rangers played between 1999-2008 or so against the Atlanta Thrashers, who would show up at MSG already leading 3-0 somehow? And it was never Kovalchuk. It was always retreads like Jim Slater and Stuart Little.

  135. Peter, you are not alone – I remember those years when the Thrashers were worthy of their name only against the Rangers, time and again. It was like “it is written…”

But how is it that most people who fail as the Rangers players go on successfully elswhere, is it not bizarre ? Like the time they sold Doug Weight to Buffalo for $1.00.
