Jets at Rangers.
Ya boys come slip-sliding in, with three straight losses (0-2-1), and four in the last five (1-2-2).
They begin a 
four-game homestand, after which they will have already played 14 of their 24 home games this season. In other words, 17 of their final 27 will be on the road. In other words, these next four are pretty important.
Rick Nash (probable concussion) skated today, but will not play tonight. Neither will Ryan McDonagh (mystery injury, possibly a concussion), Michael Del Zotto (suspected hip) or Arron Asham (back spasms). Dan Girardi (ankle/foot), Marc Staal (not sure why, possibly the flu, but he didn’t skate today) and and Darroll Powe (cleared from concussion) all will play.
Am I forgetting anybody?
I guess that means Stu Bickel and Steve Eminger both play on defense, and Chris Kreider plays up front … so no prucha’s tonight.
Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal against the Jets, who have won three of four on this five-game trip up here from the Southeast. Oh, wait …

I know I asked why Torts criticized Callahan…it’s games like this why I question Torts methods. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not wrong to ask Callahan to improve…but to me, he has bigger fish to fry than the call out the guy to the press with the most heart on the team.

I haven’t watched many games lately because I (wisely I think) didn’t opt for my local cable company’s (cogeco here) rip off $180 for 6 months of all sports package.
Tonight the games on TSN so I’m watching and I am appalled at how bad this is. I know there’s some on here who are pleading patience (kudos to them for their patience) but this is reeking of a team waiting for their coach to be fired.
The problem with the injuries is they create an excuse for losing. That may be right, but it’s not an excuse for no passion and I’m seeing no passion.
Without a doubt, signs of a lost team. Some sort of spark is desperately needed.
I dont see it coming from the coach, so it’s gotta be via a player (Nash perhaps, if/when he returns) or a call-up (Haley and/or McIlrath) or trade.
Why not call up those 2 and send down Kreider or Mashinter and Gilroy or Bickel??
Rangers need a Russian. No Russian, no playoffs.

Lest the King thinks he is getting off, let’s also point out that two of those goals were the result of massively over-committing to the strong side and giving out a huge, juicy rebound in front of an open net. Hell even if jokinen had someone draped on him he probably could have potted those.

This one was doomed from the moment Olli Jokinen scored. Bad luck, puck finds him with a wide open net, then he gets another lucky bounce right to him with an open net. Olli Jokinen scores 2 goals against your team, you know your team is struggling mightily.

Kreider took and a penalty and was lost on the 2nd or 3rd goal. Not a good game.

Miller gets to play because he hits, forechecks, and backchecks. Kreider has not done any of that consistently.

i am not giving him away.. If O’reilly is as good as I have heard(I cannot recall seeing him play) get O’reilly and more.. why not. they need depth and $$ flexibility… the high end guys have not been high end…imagine if the 3rd and 4th lines actually have guys who can play and score….
gabby and nash are not malkin and crosby.. they are not carrying to the cup, get multiple, good and versatile players. with the goal getting size, speed, and youth.

the rangers do not have enough guys who score period…boyle, powe, halpern, asham, others never score. they rely on 2 lines and those 2 lines do not have enough high end scorers. therefore they need to add lines, ie move gabby for 2 guys who can play and score. now you have 3 lines who can score…

stuart, I’m not going to get into a whole thing with you and a few others, and I’m not defending the guy because I’ve said a number of times that he’s played like crap. But you don’t sit Boyle because he’s better than Mashinter, Powe, Halpern, Asham and at this point Kreider. He had five hits tonight (tied with the captain), two of them were huge. He was 6-2 on faceoffs. He took a penalty (aggressive kind, not lazy kind). He leads the team and is among the league leaders in hits.
He’s a guy they need to get going, just like the top skill guys. They’re a better team when he’s playing better. That’s why.
You don’t sit him because a couple of people on a blog don’t like him.

they need to increase the talent base, not the high end talent base the talent base offensively in general. if that means trading gabby for 2 or 3 guys who can help in scoring by committee go for it….

Picking 3 ranger stars is more challenging than solving a cryptoquote while being waterboarded. Painful to watch…this team can not play from behind everynight. Biggest difference between this year and last- I’m sure someone will come up with the stats to prove it- last year by 7:15 we always seemed to have the lead. No team is going to be very good at coming from behind when they have no powerplay… coming from behind in the games, coming from behind for the season, coming from behind in conditioning- 180 from last year.

on a very good team this is where the guys should play….
nash 1st line, gabby of present first line(I dislike his game), richards 3rd line at best.
cally, 2nd line, hagelin(2nd or 3rd cant score), and stepan(2nd or 3rd) this is there best line at present….
boyle(4th) pyat(4th) pose (4th), kreider, mashinter, and miller,,,,(wth line or AHL)... they do not have enough offensive talent…bottom line… add o’reilly and another top 2 line young guy…...........
after all these years they still do not have 6 top line forwards…
bottom line. guys either too young, too old, or just not capable enough…
so you need to change the equation else you get the same results. they have a very good defense but offense is not the d’s specialty if they had more offense from the backline that would help also.. mdz still is not close to where they need him to be…

Its a mess and I stand by my concern expressed earlier – it sure looks like the coach doesn’t know what to do to inject energy in his team. I’ve said it on here lately a few times based on video interviews and his quotes – he looks bewildered.
Definitely a change from last season when, if they were running around like headless chickens and accomplishing nothing, he always looked pissed and often called a timeout to lambast his players.
Not this year.
Tonight he looked more dismayed than anything else.
He looked like his players played – wanting things to be different but dismayed that he was unable to figure out how to make them different.
I concur with those that say firing him now makes no sense – there’s not enough time for his replacement to make a difference.
Therefore, to me, it’s on Sather to act.
He needs to do something to inject a spark into this lineup.
He accomplished that 6 years ago by trading for Avery. He needs to explore doing something similar now. Maybe it’s as simple as demoting 2 and promoting Haley and McIlrath. I know if I was in charge Id be considering it.
Further evidence? I’m reading the same quotes from Tortorella now that I’ve read all season: ‘Encouraged about signs in this game that part of their game is starting to come…’

Was it just me, or did that game remind everyone of the 20 or so other games the Rangers played between 1999-2008 or so against the Atlanta Thrashers, who would show up at MSG already leading 3-0 somehow? And it was never Kovalchuk. It was always retreads like Jim Slater and Stuart Little.
Peter, you are not alone – I remember those years when the Thrashers were worthy of their name only against the Rangers, time and again. It was like “it is written…”
