Congratulations go out to Joseph Ruggiero of Pelham, who on Tuesday night was named the winner of the annual Emile Francis Award for “tireless efforts, sacrifices, dedication and service to youth hockey.”
Ruggiero was presented the award on the ice at Madison Square Garden by native New Yorkers and former Rangers Nick Fotiu (Staten Island) and Brian Mullen (Hell’s Kitchen) who both got their starts in local youth hockey programs.
The award is named for the long-time former Rangers coach and general manager Emile “The Cat” Francis, “whose contributions on and off the ice, and his commitment to local amateur hockey in the tri-state area made a significant and enduring impact,” as it was stated by Garden public address announcer Joe Tolleson between periods of the Rangers-Montreal Canadiens game.
According to the announcement, Ruggiero “has spent decades using hockey to have a positive impact on kids and in the local community. After creating Learn to Play clinics in the Westchester area, he began serving as a volunteer coach in Pelham Youth Hockey’s in house and travel programs. He also assisted with the Pelham (Memorial) junior varsity program.
“For over 10 years he led the Eastchester High School hockey team before shifting his focus back to where he began, as a volunteer coach with the New York Raptors, a program focused on providing opportunities for developmentally challenged athletes.
“The commitment he has demonstrated over the past 29 years does not stop on the ice as he has been a dedicated member of various charities such as Ice Hockey in Harlem, Pelham’s Civic Association Scholarship committee and as a volunteer with the local recreation commission.”
The award is presented by World Yacht.

tiki, who’s that Amelie person?
ps, if you ever met Pete Abe, you’d probably really like him. Great, great guy, unbelievably hard worker (who, in private, wishes he was still covering the Yankees to some degree).
It’s always nice to get on the the new post before Manny New Post goes up on the old post. It really signifies a slow day at the office.
Right, thanx. I knew it sounded like ‘Miracle on 34th St, but couldn’t remember the nightmare part.
Amelie is a Boston beat reporter.
I think the reviews of Carp’s books on amazon were written by cmnsnse.
kind of an unclever mix of that movie & nightmare on elm street.
i think i know which one she is.
yeah the reviews were bad. the editing was horrid. i won’t comment on the writing
Maybe your next book should be the Chronicles of Pruster. Obvious best-seller in NY.
I met Pete in Bradenton during a Spring Training game, took a picture with him. I didnt tell him who I was, though, because we had our clashes on the Yankees blog and he too hated the boston conspiracies. Amelie Benjamin works with him at the Boston Globe and is often on NESN with him. I like what he turned Yankees coverage into at Lohud with his hard work, and that he’s a straight shooter. For the most part, he won’t hold back because of relationships with team members.
right after the Rangers finish 14th (ahead of the Islanders) and the Habs win the Cup, Gravy.
Lindy Ruff is out in Buffalo..Ted Nolan may be ironing his suit as we speak.
Weird that he gets fired the same year as Andy Reid up in Philly..two pretty long eras donzo
Definitely, he’d rather be back doing the Yankees. I think he’d rather be The Guy rather than working with 5 other beat writers.
it was a tough call for him to go home and work for a big paper, or be the big fish in the little pond. He loved covering the Yankees.
Hmm I’m a contributor to Goodreads and I just looked up the book. Other than one fem with an attitude, the other reviews by readers (all listed in stars, rather than words, were good, one 5 stars, two 4 stars.
REPOST: Lindy Ruff would make a great head coach for CT Whale. Toughen these kids up!!

Another turd in the sather keppe!
Prust thought about fighting Asham during the game and Asham can’t even skate today.

“Prust For Life.” A hockey players off season with Vincent Van Gogh
I like NYR’s idea of hiring Lindy Ruff to get the CT Whale in shape.
Prust for Life sounds like a remake of the classic Iggy song…
Asham is a more proficient goon than Prust even read about in comic books
Torts so far has him on a short leash. Credit to Ash for minding his manners.
Ash to Bicks: “This guy’s actually letting me skate a little bit. Wish I had a coach like this when I was 23, I might have become a hockey player.”

Might the writer encourage the posters to move on from their “Prustrations”?
Please advise when Sappy will hold a “state of the organization” press conference for the writing fraternity!
Thank you Mr. Rick

A Fourth Line of: Mashinter-Halpern-Bickel
I would drop Boyle down to centre that line and brin Halpern up with the kids or Pyatt or whatever. That 4th line would be HUGE.
Manny, respectfully the problem among many problems with this roster is scoring.
The last word in your second sentence is the way this group has been assembled!
Please try to restrain your GM impulses, it sounds like you are wired to the Slappy brain pan!
Am I the only one who needs a trnsltr?
yrnottheownleyone
LW3H, Whatever? Sorry two syllables! ;)
Comnsnse, the last word in his second sentence is “HUGE.” A Fourth Line of: Mashinter-Halpern Bickel does not constitute a sentence.
These puns are getting prusty…yikes! Just a little bit of yeast and the prust will rise.
So Nash not accompanying the Blueshirts to Ottawa…not a good sign?
Oh, and I was a big fan of Emile the Cat…great honor, Carp. Thank you for posting.
What are you talking about Nonsense? Your fake name, Nonsense, is really starting to make sense/cents.

LAINE: You wanted to see me, Mr. Lippman?
LIPPMAN: I was just going over the Jake Jarmel book and I understand you worked with him very closely on this.
ELAINE: Yes. Yes I did.
LIPPMAN: And uh, anyway I was just reading your final edit and um, there seems to be an inordinate number of exclamation points.
ELAINE: Uh well um, I felt that the writing lacked certain emotion and intensity.
LIPPMAN: Ah, “It was damp and chilly afternoon, so I decided to put on my sweatshirt!”
ELAINE: Right, well…
LIPPMAN: You put exclamation point after sweatshirt?
ELAINE: That’s that’s correct, I-I felt that the character doesn’t like to be ch-ch-chilly…
LIPPMAN: I see, “I pulled the lever on the machine, but the Clark bar didn’t come out!” Exclamation point?
ELAINE: Well, yeah, you know how frustrating that can be when you keep putting quarters and quarters in to machine and then nothing comes out…
LIPPMAN: Get rid of the exclamation points…
ELAINE: Ok, ok ok …
LIPPMAN: I hate exclamation points…
I hate exhumation joints
don’t imagine Lindy Ruff’s next stop will be anything lower than the NHL level.
Lindy Ruff sounds like a stray at an old cheesecake joint.
McCoos said joint
have to say I’m a bit surprised Ruff got canned
don’t imagine Lindy Ruff’s next stop will be anything lower than the NHL level
Not the Islanders then?
that’s like ECHL level
Torts: ” the Canadiens are a very prustrating team to play against”
that Biron’s journal was fairly entertainig
Bet the sabres give him a Billy Martin before its all said and done.
No question Lindy can still coach at NHL level…but, maybe he wants a change of pace?
One of my favorite hockey names ever, by the way….Ruff….
He’s been doing it for so long up there in Buffalo…
careful, Lloyd, you’ll awaken our Islanders fan guy.
wait, what’s a Billy Martin?
So how long until Mr. Lindy Ruff takes over the Washington Capitals for Adam Oates, the eyeliner wearing gambler?
Hey, it’s not Ruff’s fault that Buffalo mgmt let all their best players go…they had a great team as recently as when they OTed us out of the playoffs
A billy Martin is when you get blackout drunk and do 90 on an upstate highway through the bowels of binghamton
NYR fan said doing it
If you can’t succeed with John Scott…..Who can you succeed with?
The buffalo donut shops replaced their oversized Paul Bunyan balloon statues with regular size John Scott statues
If the Craps do anything, they should strip OvechCANT of the “C”....
If that doesn’t motivate him to be better, not sure what will….
Lindy Ruff. Future head coach of the New York Rangers?
He had a less than memorable cup of coffee here with our mid ‘80s lovable losers, no?
Tiki, I see a sentence without a period,where you see a headline?
In any case is it necessary to repeat the intent the “prust”of my point?
Based on many of these posts some remedial reading and writing classes may be in order.
Manny, be calm the attendant will be along soon!!!!!
Absolutely, NYR. It’s such a flipping JOKE that Ovechkin wears the “C”. It’s like, “hey! Let’s give the “C” to the guy that works the LEAST hard on our team! He stands for nothing good. Awesome.”
Man, the Nash injury must be more serious than….at least… I thought. Not playing tomorrow? Not accompanying the team? Ugh.
BUT, perfect time for our STARS to play well….you know, Richards and Gabby. Our stars…..
czech, though I doubt there will be a coaching change any time in the near future of the NYR … I also don’t believe there is anybody smart enough in the front office (who counts) to hire Lindy Ruff.
Yeah, Manny. He sets a bad example for the young guys…
And, when he was scoring 60 per season, Chris Clark was the captain…
remember, they passed on Keenan, Pat Burns, Hitchcock, Tippett, not to mention Tortorella, and so many others to hire Low, then Trottier.
As of today, 4 of 8 playoffs teams in East from last year out. Anyone remember who finished last? Habs @ 15. Looks who’s in 1st. Can’t accept they’re that much better & NYRS about to drop out of sight. And look at those Mighty Ducks. Finished 13 last year in West. Only Detroit & LA on the outside right now. Season doesn’t end for a couple months I heard.
Good point, NYR
manny
we did the same thing with Jagr!
speaking of exclamation points, how the tweets by NHL on NBC ?
They sure must be making the games more Exciting!!
Trade b-rich for vinny lecav NOW!!!!
SufferingSince- all that means is the season is still young.
two or three wins in a row changes everything this season … tomorrow the season is one-third over.
Gee, what a surprise. Pittsburgh Penguins on NBCN.
I feel like I have a cable subscription to the Pen’s, they’re on national so much.
I wonder what Boyle and Del Zaster had to pay for the bar tab last night when they took Prust out to celebrate his win…

these Pitt-Philly games sure do get nasty. this one is.
Voukoun looks lost out there.
Agreed, Carpy. Numero 87 better watch himself out there. Of course, the whistle blows before anyone thinks of hitting him.
You know, once those gorillas accept you, you got it made in the shade.
uh oh…. Matt Cooke has been activated. Flyers need to watch their heads, ankles, knees. Psychopath career killer on the loose.
I saw lindy ruff score on a penalty shot against the Quebec Nordiques – sat behind carol Alt
and also, Matt Cooke is allowed to do whatever the byfuglien he wants to do, just like Lucic, Neil, Malkin and Subban. Ya boys better keep their heads up tomorrow, because Neil already threatened Del Zotto at the end of the series last year, and will be looking to assault others.
I wish the rangers played with a quarter of the malice, intensity, and passion that the pens and or flyers do!
you mean, like they did last year, macbook wickster?
True, Carpy. These Pen’s get away with a lot as do the Bruins.
I was there, e3.
claim cody mccormick lol
coco, latona?
carp
exactly!!!
Hey…is it possible that Richards is having problems relating to that concussion he suffered in 2011? And, that he is being tight lipped about it? And, that he hasn’t spoken to Rammer?
Carp, what percentage of the intensity of the Rangers, last year, was attributable to Prust?
“Matt Cooke is allowed to do whatever the byfuglien he wants to do, just like Lucic, Neil, Malkin and Subban.”
TRUTH
Actually Barry, Carp.
Richards is a career -72. If he played on the PK, I could understand that a bit. But he’s always on the PP.
Just how’d he get these kind of dollars??
Nothin like Lemieux complaining about head shots and paying Cooke!
Ricardo – wish I knew ye then
Lol, Manny.
Matty PK doesn’t count re +/-
Ok, so end of 1st. Perhaps they will talk about another NHL team. Is there life after the Pen’s?
well, he’s too slow to be on it anyway. No specials?
Ah, only shorthanded goals counted.
Don’t forget to put slew foot Boyle in San Jose, meszaros, and briere as punks that get away with cheap shots routinely
Ok, so, “the angle of the arm” changed on Hansen’s hit on Hossa. Hmmm…..and Lucic’s elbow angle did not change with his hit on Nash.
Mike Millbury dismantled the Islanders. And, we listen to him? Why?
Brooks seems to have diagnosed Nash’s problem:
http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/02/20/new-york-posts-larry-brooks-blames-milan-lucic-for-rick-nash-head-injury/
If one can believe him, it’s my turn to eat crow, Carp. Let’s hope he and you are wrong.
Lose vs Sens and posts may go over 5000, not that anyone is complaining…
Say what you want about bottom 6 or dub/Art but this team lived and died on D and Hank and a fortuitous goal. The offense was neutral at best.
All that Jam and Grit got us close but no cigar in a season where everything had to go right and mostly did.
As we watch Richards turn into Marcel Dionne (the Ranger years) and the Gabby Ghost play hide and seek, we know this is not the talent that brings home the cup.
Given the crapshoot that is NHL hockey playoffs, any team can beat another team talentevel be damned. Had raised expectations this season with Nash addition but now those have been tempered.
Just hope he is okay, because he has been our most productive player since Day 1.
It pretty obvious Sanahan, Bettman and the NHL Office do not treat all franchises equally. There are two sets of rules. They certainly have an intense bone a for Dolan, Sather, Torterella and the Rangers. How the Loo Cheese hit is permissible is beyond comprehension.
I honestly don’t think gabby’s game is much different than previous seasons for us, he has always been a bit streaky….
B-rich does seem a bit off even though he is averaging almost a point a game
Wicky says he wishes the Rangers would play with quarter the malice…
See, there’s an issue that should be addressed with the Rangers roster. Im sure this wont be received as it’s intended. I’ll use the Bruins as an example because I know them, like I do the Rangers. They have guys like Marchand, Lucic and Chara that will cripple people with no regard. You guys dont like Cookes that illegally injure others. So let’s say for sake of conversation, these Bruins injure others through legal hockey plays.
The Rangers dont have that, and didnt have that last year either. We can dismiss Hagelin’s 3 game playoff suspension bc we know, or can assume, he had no intention to deliver the hit he did. It was reckless, if anything. Theres nobody on the Rangers that strikes any fear in the opposition. In contrast, I wouldnt want to go near Chara or Lucic armed with a baseball bat and a gun.. They strike fear, they’ll hurt you, they’ll put you out of commission and they wont think twice. The Rangers play with intensity and passion, but not malice. It cant be quantified, but I think you need malice in a sport like hockey. You need to have players (not goons) be willing and ok to jeopardize someone’s career… within the rules of the game. But the Rangers play #therightway. I would pay to see McDonagh lay a player out legally and concuss him. I’d like to see Staal lay out one of his brothers legally and put him on the shelf for some time.
Hey Carp. A Billy Martin is when a guy gets a second chance. I think that he will end up back with the sabres at some point in the future.
Tiki, I think your point is quite valid. Nasty. They have zero nasty.
Rocky Mountain, Hi!
I hope the Flyers are wearing their Kevlar socks tonight
Flyers just showed how to work a power play.
John Daly during Sunday Mass at The German Church of the Holy Shepherd was asked to put down his Foster’s 40 and put out his cigarette.
Simmonds with the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Gotta love that guy. Or at least covet him.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wing.
god flyers/pens is real hockey not this crap we saw last night. my poor brother in law who had my tix had to sit through that borefest
from HNIC…...
2. There is a lot of debate as to why Vancouver forced veteran forward Manny Malhotra to sit. But a couple of sources, including one player (not Bieksa) who told me to look through Malhotra’s second-last game, a 4-1 victory over Minnesota.
It’s been reported that there was one play where Dany Heatley, a former teammate, could have clobbered him but let up. I couldn’t find that one, although I did find two other situations where Malhotra carried into dangerous spots: one comes about 30 seconds in (Clayton Stoner could have gone for the hit); the other is at approximately 13:10 of the third period (Matt Cullen).
Players said Malhotra seemed unsure of himself with the puck, so he looked down at it a lot more than normal.

Wow! Lindy Ruff – didn’t see that one coming! Blaming the coach for a lousy lineup?
Eric, pawning those tickets off on your B-I-L could be construed as a major offense against your wife’s family – next time, sell them to strangers!
if Fleury gets hurt, Pittsburgh is in big trouble.
Kennedy sure has a nose for the net. Anyone know if he was ever in a New York hospital for an extended period of time? He might have been the creature Kramer was talking about..
Good news, everyone!!
The Penguins will be the nationally televised featured game this Sunday on NBC Network.
Who could have guessed that one?
5 on 3 for Pitt is really like a 6 on 3. Then a Flyer breaks his stick.
Like a 6 on 2.
Nice save by Bryz.
how this game turns is unreal
Ahahahaha.
We found yet another way to assess a penalty to the Flyers. Gee, late in the game heroics by America’s and NBC’s and Bettman’s team. How surprising.
looked like a freaking punter there. that has to be disallowed. Let’s see, what to do. Do you actually take one away from America’s team?
Somehow, someway, this goal will probably stand.
another OT game written all over it everyone gains pts on us
good defensive work by the Flyers.
Oooohhhhhh….....ooooooooooh…......aaaaaahhhhhhhhh….....one hundred forty-three seconds left…..
But wait, I thought that Mr. Snider’s company purchased the NHL? Shouldn’t the Philthy Flies be America’s Team!?
I hope Torts is watching the penguin game tonight and how their pp works.
No player is standing still and there is always someone in front of the goalie in the slot.
constant movement.
Cmon Torts it is not that hard!!!
Epic derp on the wraparound by Universe.
Latona….Pigman Kennedy?
what do you know OT. just awful
You betcha, Papa Bear. Even WORSE derp by Vokoun!
Lotsa defense being played here tonight!!
Wow.
spoke to fast.
Voukoun will be fired…by Bettman for that one. Out of the league, you. Out.
How dare you not let Cyndy and Evelyn win????/
I hope everyone noticed the difference in Doc’s yelling when Pittsburgh scored and when Philly scored.
I certainly did, Lev.
Why so dejected, Doc??????
Doc is about to cry
Whew!! No D at all…
nice win. a gutty win. the kind we had last year.
that was hockey not what we play
Didn’t Vokoun beat us at least once this year already?
and, now, if you watch St. Louis, they are well put together. Size, speed, finesse. Goaltending.
Seriously good.
Yes, he did, Jimbo. At MSG, I believe.
He is either hot or cold. Against us he was hot. Tonight cold.
Why do they disclose Powes injury but not Nash’s??????
OOOOOHHHHHHHHHH! AND IT WOULD NOT GO!!
Because Powes injury was pretty obvious…
An odd though, perhaps, but I often contemplate what it’d be like to have a capable 23-man roster in which you rotated players in and out of the line-up regularly for no reason other than a tactical adjustment for a particular opponent or some well-deserved rest. And I’m not talking about swapping a penalty killer for a good or anything like that.
Latona said swapping.
I thought so, Matty – Thanks!! Of course with our offense sputtering like it did last night, Gump Worsley could have beaten us – and he’s dead…
coos said swapping.
Latona also said odd. Don’t know if you can say that anymore.
coos said Latona.
My grandfather used to say once in a while, “that man is an odd duck.” Never really knew exactly what he meant by that.
Odd: differing markedly from the usual or ordinary or accepted : peculiar
Papa Bear said the.
Like in ‘the odds are against you?’
duck: I’m about to throw something
Like in screwball
uh oh. Papa Bear just went ballistic. Carp alert!
You mean like Tug McGraw was odd?
Coos said tug
YO!

Layschips.Remember when Thomas Vokoun was completely irrelevant ? Why does everyone tank when they are on the Caps.? Anybody see the season Semin is putting together?
Yeah! I do Manny!
Semin has been good!
How about Bobby Sanguinetti? 0 points and -8!
no more fritos… only party mix!
Odd, I just had Sanguinetti Bolognese Monday night with a nice glass of Mionetto Prosecco Brut. Delightful.
Wish you would flush the toilet once in a while, 3C. Unless it’s one of the other cellar dwellers. Haven’t seen Mom in a while.
i think it was Carp… i believe he had some bad baba ghanoush earlier
any word on MonsterNash?
It’s more secret than the President’s golf handicap, Educ.
In my youth, I think I had a spiritual adviser named baba ghanoush.

Carp’s recap of last night’s game was stellar. Too bad you never read something like that in the newspapers. Guess it’s too esoteric for the average fan. Greetings e!

I think I saw that word in ‘War and Peace’ in the original Russian.
Forshmak is the shiznit! Esp. the one my mom makes! :D
