Tortorella addresses Kreider demotion; Richards on being benched

50

I am taking a maintenance day (upper and lower body non-injuries) after splitting time between my two jobs the last few days.

Rick Nash also took one today but is expected to play tomorrow, according to our friends who tweet over there ————>

Keep an eye to your right for John Tortorella’s explanation on the Chris Kreider demotion, and for Brad Richards talking about being benched in the third period Thursday.

Tortorella also confirmed to the reporters (those who did actually, you know, work on Saturday) what I’ve been reporting all week, that J.T. Miller’s contract status — i.e. the clock starting on his entry-level contract when he plays his sixth game tomorrow — never was an issue.

I know, not much info coming out of blog HQ today, but I figured you need a new post.

Also, the Washington Post is reporting that Mike Green (lower body injury) might not play tomorrow, and if not, then you guys get to see one of your faves, Tom Poti. Braden Holtby starts in goal for the Caps. Don’t forget it’s a 6 p.m. game.

  1. Chimera is a -literal- figurative monster. Fire breathing she monster with lion’s head, goat’s body, and serpent’s tail. And hooves (thank you, Carp)

  2. ilb can afford $50 plates of ravioli at il Mulino. We are lucky to have him here. Like General Grant stopping by the enlisted men’s mess hall.

  3. Benched…you should be so lucky. I think there’s a Greyhound leaving from PA to Hartford, CT in a few mins.

  4. I saw some people on last post saying Torts hates Kreider. I disagree, Torts thinks Chris needs more work in the minors to develop as a complete and mature player. I have no issue with that. However, I’d like to see Torts hold a guy like Brad, his guy, more accountable. If Brad’s struggled as bad as hockey rodent and the folks at blueshirts bulletin claim he has, he needs to be held accountable. Supposedly, Brad was benched in 3rd period on Thursday.

  5. He was benched, but they also benched Miller. Meaning their two primary centers were Stepan and Boyle. He got a couple of shifts in OT and looked lousy. The hope is that it’s just conditioning, because if this is how it’s going to be the rest of the time, Stepan and Miller better become really good ASAP.

  6. There is nothing supposed about Richards being benched. He played one shift in the 3rd. He was benched.

And there is a difference between Richards playing 1 shift in the 3rd and Miller not playing or playing limited minutes in the 3rd. Miller has played 5 games in the NHL. Very unproven on defense and in general. After 2 good games he should not be trusted in a close game in the 3rd. He wasnt “benched” in the same way Richards was benched.

  7. Richards will get going towards the playoffs. He’s been reported as out of shape and battling that flu could not have helped. It will take a while but he’ll be fine.

  8. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, re: repeat offender status, it only affects amount of salary forfeited. It can always be considered when deciding how much discipline to dole out.

  9. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Chimera turns into Gretzky because chimera is a physical player and the rangers still do not play with enough “bite” against physical players

  10. thanks for clarification, Doodie. I understand.

still a joke that an asshat like him can ever not be considered a repeat offender.

  11. Problem is that the buyout period is before FA period. You run the risk of buying out a player and then not having your FA targets actually hit FA.

  12. Mike Green and Tanner Glass should trade last names. Mike Glass.

Good thing he has that whole $6.7M cap hit.

  13. Good point…but might be a risk worth taking if there are indications that Ducks wouldn’t resign him.

There is nothing wrong with having cap space…

This is all assuming Richards continues to deteriorate and play like he has…

  14. “And now, In Goal, Rick DiFragile! He’s signed through 2035! And playing Defense, in front of him, Mike Glass! He’s only signed through 2023. Good luck to the two of them today, because the team can’t afford anyone else!”

  15. NYR_FAN- they will have to attempt to replace him with another C, not R winger. If anything, they would go after Getzlaf. I doubt either of them will hit the market. Anaheim is more likely to trade Ryan than let any of those to go.

  16. Carp working two jobs like the poor doorman who has to put food on the table for mother and baby.

  17. Geez, NYR. If you can get Corey Perry then I think you pretty much do whatever it takes to make that happen (aside from trading Lundqvist, Oleo). But that’s a pipe dream probably…

  18. I know people are into Ryan Getzlaf but, can you imagine if he has a goal drought like last season here in NY? We will be screaming Fire BLANK and Trade BLANK and Buyouy BLANK before we know it.

  19. Kreider’s back up. Wondering if Nash is hurt. They called it a “maintenance day” today, but they said the same thing before Girardi started missing games.

  20. Yeah, I’m hesitant on Getzlaf…partly because I think the Ducks will do whatever it takes to keep him…

Perry plays a Torts style game…

I think, as a Ranger fan, you have to start believing in Derek Stepan as your future #1 center, right?

  21. Haha. So he got sent down to play one game last night? Sounds like a conditioning stint….

    LMAO, ilb.
