Rangers 4, Islanders 1
Team Notes:
- The Rangers defeated the New York Islanders, 4-1, tonight at Madison Square Garden, for their fourth win in the last five home games.
- The Blueshirts improved to 5-5-0 (10 pts) overall, including a 4-2-0 mark at MSG this season.
- The Rangers extended their home winning streak against the Islanders to eight games, and have out-scored the Islanders, 35-11, during the streak.
- The Blueshirts have now registered at least one point in 14 of their last 17 games against the Islanders, posting a record of 12-3-2 over the span, dating back to a 5-2 win on Dec. 17, 2009, at Long Island.
- The Rangers remained undefeated when scoring the first goal this season, posting a record of 3-0-0 in those contests, compared to 2-5-0 when allowing the game’s first goal. The Blueshirts improved to 3-0-0 when leading after the first and second periods.
Player Notes:
- J.T. Miller notched his first career NHL point with the game’s opening goal at 1:29 of the first period, added a power play tally at 18:11 of the second period, posted a plus-two rating and won 5-8 faceoffs (63%) while making his Madison Square Garden debut.
- According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last Ranger (rookie or otherwise) to tally multiple goals in his MSG debut was Chris Kontos in a 6-2 win against Detroit on Jan. 3, 1983. Miller is the youngest Ranger to tally multiple-goals in a single game since Alex Kovalev posted a hat trick on Dec. 27, 1992, at the age of 19 years, 307 days.
- Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves to improve to 4-5-0 overall, including a 4-2-0 mark at home this season. He has held opponents to two goals or less in four of his last six games, posting a record of 3-3-0 with a 2.02 goals against average and a .923 save percentage over the span.
- Marc Staal tied his career-high with two assists, was credited with five hits and a game-high, four blocked shots, and posted a plus-two rating in 26:28 of ice time. He has registered three assists in the last three games, and now leads all team defensemen with five assists and is tied for first with six points in 10 games this season.
- Marian Gaborik tallied the eventual game-winning goal to increase his team-leading total to six goals, and is tied for first on the Rangers in scoring with nine points. He has recorded eight points (six goals, two assists) in six home games, and is now tied for the NHL lead with three game-winning goals on the season.
- Chris Kreider recorded his first career NHL regular season assist with the primary helper on Miller’s first period goal. He has now tallied points in consecutive games, after notching his first career regular season goal on Tuesday at New Jersey.
- Ryan McDonagh tied his career-high with two points, including one power play assist and an empty net goal, and logged 24:42 of ice time. He also tied for the team-high with three shots on goal, and was credited with two hits and two blocked shots in the contest.
- Brad Richards tallied an assist on the game-winning goal to extend his assist/point streak to three games (three assists over the span). He increased his team-leading assists total to seven on the season, and is tied for the team lead in scoring with nine points.

- John Tortorella on the team’s youth… “It’s so important for the organization to keep filling in with kids. Cap world, youth and enthusiasm. (Carl) Hagelin comes up here and changes our team last year. I’m not sure where it goes, but both of them have contributed here during the first couple of games.”
- Henrik Lundqvist on J.T. Miller… “It’s great. We need everybody to do good stuff for us but obviously a young kid like that to come in—and not only his goals. I think he plays so mature out there making good decisions with the puck, It’s important. It definitely brings some energy to the group. Guys come in and do well right away.”
- Ryan Callahan on tonight’s game… “It’s never too early to talk about the importance of a win. I think the biggest thing for us now is to put a few together. We can’t keep going back and forth, win one and lose one, especially with this shortened season. We have to build on this and get better as we go here.”

Yea ive been very impressed with Stralman. He has really improved from when he first got here. I dont know exactly how much he played but it had to be around 20 minutes. Crazy.
Now where Manny will disagree with me: ever since the playoffs began Stralman has consistently improved whereas Stepan has consistently regressed.

Let’s not get too carried away with Anton Stralman. Guy is a 3rd pairing d-man when everyone is healthy. He plays ok a bit of the time and he has other times where he’s not ok. Typical journeyman defenseman.
Explain, Lev. Why? Why does Pyatt reach the level of “love” ? To me the guy never finishes a check and is moved off the puck way too easily for his size…
What bugged me was our goalie being crashed and no call, no retaliation. McD started getting Bogart, but who else?

Manny , I withdrew my demand to buyout Richards after watching “Beginnings” tonight. In fact, I will never have a negative thought about him again. Good guy, good family.. Not quite Graves, but close enough. So what if he loses some face-offs, plays the pp point like Dale Rolf and will consume a large portion of our salary cap for many years to come.
Manny, yes, Pyatt….I think he’s really playing to prove himself on team. Perfect, no..but that’s my story and I’m sticking by it (or Pyatt) for now at least.

Tortorella basically never plays that 6th defenseman anymore mostly because whoever is there would be a healthy scratch on a team when Girardi is dressed.
That last interference penalty assessed to McDonagh was a disgrace to the sport and the kind of thing (along with everything Gary Bettman has ever done) that makes me doubt the long term existence of the NHL.

Stepan played about 6 minutes more than Gaborik, and in fact he played the most minutes from all the forwards. That I do not like.

in the second period he had a goal taken away where he crashed the crease to poke the puck home and continually goes to the net – not worried about him getting pushed around as he is bigger than all those D on icelanders.
He also nailed tavares to the ice in a questionable call IMO, though McD’s was much worse call in 3rd.
Playing with Step and Hags is not conducive to offense.
No one looks like they are expending more energy skating than Eminger – his elbows are flying wide, knees sticking out, its pretty funny to watch.
Hagelin is an adequate player. He’s ok as long as he’s not make really stupid mistakes. I was skeptical of the guy’s offensive prowess last year and I’m fairly convinced now that there’s just not enough there to warrant pairing him with the Nashs, Richards’ and Gaboriks.

Speedo. Agreed, he can come out of the corners with the puck against much bigger checkers. But I think they measure a lot of these guys with their skates on. What goes into the yearbooks, from High School to pros is what the player tells them he is. Some of them downplay the weight. I’ve seen Nash, for instance listed at 210, and elsewhere at 215.

if I had to bet I’d say Kreider is still somewhat bothered by that ankle. ankle injuries don’t heal that quickly and they’re not the kind of things that yield themselves to effective skating. his reponse to Trautwig during that intermission tonight made it seem like he wasn’t 100% but won’t complain about it.

The point about the penalty was that it’s just one example of an increasingly large mound of evidence that suggests the league is moving in the wrong direction. I don’t really believe fans will stop showing up because Ryan McDonagh was called for interference. But I do not believe that the many changes we’ve seen in the sport are in any way increasing its sustainability down the road.

Interesting article in today’s NY Times about Russia’s 9 time zones and how in Moscow for most of the winter, people wake up in the dark, go to school in the dark, work in the dark, and arrive home in the dark. And in the financial sector, it’s an additional hour’s difference from NY and London, and further increases the work day. Ironically, under pressure from the Olympics and TV, (billions) they might change to daylight savings.

Ted Williams was an active player for 19 seasons (he missed 1943-45 due to WWII). The Red Sox won 1 AL pennant wherein Ted Williams batted .200 and drove in 1 RBI because he can’t handle the shift. In those 19 season, the Yankees won 14 AL titles and 10 world series. Suffice it to say, they managed to get by without him.

I like Stepan a lot, actually…what I don’t like is the complete lack of physicality in his game right now. He looks intimidated and soft, far too easy to move off the puck, and this has inhibited his ability to play-make. Guy needs to get that stuff sorted out.
If he’s not scoring, he has to start throwing some big checks to wake himself up. He’s not exactly a munchkin.
besides a few flashes of spectacular play nash has been a huge dissapointment. again given up 3 goals just by being soft in the d zone, misses the net a ton on his shots and moves and has scored 2 goals….
but whine about stepan because he is not a fast skater. the guy was on the #1 PK unit tonight, but you know more then Torts….
nash was on the Pk the other day when he let a puck at his skates get whacked in by 23 who makes about $4 mill less a year then him….
stepan, hagelin, miller, kreider, mcdonagh, these guys are kids…...none over 23 yeras old….nash in his 8th year or so..nash and gabby float plain and simple, nash has the ability to dominate. that means dominate all the time, not when he feels like it…....

Nash was needed to score at Columbus, always has put up big minus/plus minuses. Here, he’s playing with much more talent, and in a new system with Torts who despises one way players, but (grudgingly) puts up with one or two if they give him LARGE, consistent goals. I think Nash will eventually fit in. With everything else clicking, he should prove useful. IMHO
Lloyd – now there’s an example of a player who I thought was larger. Go figure. Phil Simms I always thought was undersized, but he was listed at 6’3. Guess it’s who you’re standing next to.

Lloyd, I am not sticking up for Stepan by any stretch or defending the way he’s played or whatever … I’m just telling you fact. The four players at whom the “scared/tentative” remark was aimed were 22, 10, 4, 19. It was not aimed at Stepan. I have that confirmed.
Young NHL Hockey players who come up (and can skate) and over a body of work play big, usually do well. Other sports, like baseball, football, etc, they eventually find your weakness and exploit it.

If confidence is the big thing that Stepan right now lacks, and it seems so, since Tortorella keeps playing him, that can be corrected with some success. He obviously has the coach’s vote, so we’re harder on him than the hierarchy is.
