Brian Boyle, one of the “scared or tentative” players coach John Tortorella mentioned after the loss in Newark Tuesday, will be prucha’d along with Stu Bickel.
Captain Ryan Callahan returns to the lineup, but Dan Girardi remains out. J.T. Miller and Darroll Powe make their Garden debuts as Rangers. Steve Eminger replaces Bickel on defense.
Henrik Lundqvist starts his ninth game in goal.
The Islanders will be without tough guy Matt Carkner, who was a villain in last spring’s Rangers-Senators playoff series. Or a hero, I supposed, depending on which horse you had in that race.

I forgot at that time that the amnesty buyout cost only one year’s worth of contract, not the old 2/3 of the remaining contract that a straight-out buyout would cost, and which would stay on the cap. This is a compliance buyout, totally different animal, and they could definitely use it on Richards, especially if he deteriorates.

Was anyone else (like me) a little annoyed that McDonagh didn’t pass the puck, with 2 minutes left and empty net, to JT Miller for the hat trick?

Yep, McDonagh became the uncontested best defenseman on the Ranger down the stretch last year and it’s become even more obvious this season. Hard to say whether Staal’s been hindered psychologically by what he went through – fwiw, I always thought he was a bit overrated – but he’s not the player McDonagh is. Girardi, although tough as nails, doesn’t have McDonagh’s versatility. McDonagh skates better than any Rangers defenseman, is a considerably physical presence and will definitely become a bigger offensive force down the line. Best d-man they’ve produced since #2.
