It’s Go Time!

Game 10.
Islanders at Rangers.

First meeting of the season in the luke-warm rivalry.

(Let’s face it, the Rangers have much bigger rivalries with the Devils, Flyers, Penguins and even Capitals right now).

Brian Boyle, one of the “scared or tentative” players coach John Tortorella mentioned after the loss in Newark Tuesday, will be prucha’d along with Stu Bickel.

Captain Ryan Callahan returns to the lineup, but Dan Girardi remains out. J.T. Miller and Darroll Powe make their Garden debuts as Rangers. Steve Eminger replaces Bickel on defense.

Henrik Lundqvist starts his ninth game in goal.

The Islanders will be without tough guy Matt Carkner, who was a villain in last spring’s Rangers-Senators playoff series. Or a hero, I supposed, depending on which horse you had in that race.

Please vote for the Three Rangers Stars at the end of the game, in the poll over there on the left <————

and follow me on Twitter: @rangersreport.

Also, I need a bunch more volunteers to do the Three Rangers Stars for my morning reviews. Anybody interested, please drop me an email at

  1. That has to be a first!!

Nice touch, using the Gorton’s Fisherman logo, Carp – looks like Stan Fischler!

  2. re: Kenny Albert

another company man who can’t stop talking about how great the reno is and hasn’t paid for a seat in decades

  3. Carp: Wykagyl and Bronxville Improper, (Lawrence Park W. along with DeLillo, and your very own Phil Reisman, for what it’s worth. Buddies in Rye, though, so spent some time up there in the days.

  4. Lloyd, were you at the Philly game when there was the big fight upstairs and the security had a hard time getting there because of the long aisles?

  5. Carp was kind to Fischler. Couple years ago, Tom Coughlin would have fined him for not being five minutes early.

  6. Stranger Nation on

lots of interesting angles to this game

JT Miller on Garden ice playing with The Kreider

Monster Nash with Step and Hags

no Dan G, no BB (absessed boyle?); no jam?

no Heavyweight to Scrap with Boulton

Auntie Em and Gilly going to see more ice than normal

The King needs to get the mojo going!

Time to go and get a win!!!!!

lets gog og ggo gog gog go go gogoggoooo!!!!

do this!!! We got ’em!!! Fishshticks for supper!!!!!

lets go Rangers!!! lets go Rangers!!!

  8. No, and…uh…too scared to butt into THAT conversation again. Oh, you mean like Ray Lewis.

Three periods of blood ,goals and plenty of shots!!!

    We will win .

  10. Good evening all! Can’t believe Thomas is now with the sticks….blech. A Boston cousin of mine said he wanted to go to a game and throw an Obama doll at him …. thought that was pretty funny. I said it was even more reason to hate the sticks…..

  11. I saw a big fight at the Pittsburgh game – don’t recall anything specifically about the Flyers game. Don’t know about the security but wouldn’t surprise me as the gates are tiny.

  12. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

Get off Boyle’s case….This season he has as many goals as Hadfield (Vickers)-Ratelle-Gilbert combined…

  13. Czechthemout!!! on

Nice goal goal by that kid. He can play! Quick, trade him for Rupp,Prust,Dubi,AA,Eric Boulton?

  14. I’m sad my BB is prucha’d. Why are the Debbies on MSG and Rangers are some new channel I don’t know what the hartnell it is….at least there’s no Joe Mich

  15. Gotta keep an eye on Mutt Moulson – troglodyte always lights us up….Tavares, too…

  16. Rangers are on MSG1 down here in Queens, Mama – don’t know what your cable system is up to!

  17. Good thing about Boyle gone , is we wont have to watch him get beat up.

    GO RANGERS!!!!

    This is ours

  18. The Fishsticks are re-emerging, alright… You leave Gaborik that wide open, he’ll score 10 out of 10 from that position.

  19. too bad he pulled some really bad crap later in his career, because Domi was one of the all-time characters. I could tell you some stories.

  20. My channel, which claims to be MSG plus, just snowed a commercial plugging the sticks….wtb?

  21. Tell us!! Maybe not now, but when the blog is degenerating into other ignominious conversations, like baseball and tennis and futbol…

  22. Stranger Nation on

put Nash with those Two young guns and they all net 30+ in a season

    Hags and Step cannot finish

  23. Sam Rosen, however…Yakking again about inconsequentia while players are flying around the ice.

  24. How great would that be, Muckler wearing shades and growling “Dial it! Would be better than anything he ever did as Rangers coach.

  25. ThisYearsModel on

CARP—Nah….the Wizard of Schnoz creeping up on the stair lift grumbling…”Malhotra sucks”

  26. Crowd noise is disappointing, again. Why should I be able to hear one poor guy yelling LGR on tv?

  27. Hugo Folkyerself on

I know Gaborik disappears for some long stretches, but he’s not REALLY invisible out there, is he?

  28. The place is always dead. It’s like they’re listening to Pierre Maguire and being lulled into an early grave

  29. Eminger and Hags
    better go kiss
    the Hank heiny
    for saving them
after not getting puck outta the zone

  30. Fishsticks, Fla!

Can we *pleeeeeeze* get a third goal before something bad happens here, fellas!?

  31. Olga Folkyerself on

Think about it… The Rangers have to buy out Redden to get under the Cap Max, and the Isles have to acquire Thomas to get over the Cap Min. Yet the Fishsticks are a point ahead of the Rangers.

How DOES Sather keep his job?

  32. Didn’t Steppers get a hat in his debut? Or was that later…..I want another from Miller!

  33. >>get this kid an apartment!

Not so fast! He’s playing on pure adrenaline right now. Wait until they start coaching and showing him how to play properly.

  34. [runs to buy a notebook and a pink sharpie which will be used to write “J.T. Miller” and draw hearts in the notebook]

  35. Seriously, I love that he had a terrible giveaway and then came back and made the opposite of a tentative play.

  36. You one up’d me there, Jimbo.

If this game isn’t proof that the kids need to PLAY, PLAY, PLAY then I don’t know what is. Let’s all chip in to get JT Miller some housing in this fine city so that he can stay around.

  37. Roughing on McD, yeah, but after a slash on Lundqvist. About time someone on D cleared the crease and played a little angry. McD is the real deal. Hard to believe he has only one point the way he can join the rush.

  38. Amen, coos. I am fine with that. I am thoroughly pissed off at the lack of JAM this team has shown after the whistle. If Pyatt is in the vicinity of a scrum he has to get in there and face wash someone. No excuse. Nash was getting shoved around by 3-4 Islandorks and Richards does nothing. FACE WASH.

  39. Czechthemout!!! on

Tom Renney ” JT looked good at times out their but we need to polish him up a bit so that we can give him something to think about , now that he’s had a taste,he’s going back to Hartford to learn the game a little more.

  40. Gotta like the flow, but no calls for crosschecking or interference any more? Anyone near the Isles’ net takes a beating. Our defensemen like to poke check in the defensive crease. McDonagh finally asserted himself. Others should take note.

  41. Sorry, Manny – we both were typing our thoughts at the same time..sometimes even a blind squirrel finds an acorn! :)

  42. Yea, Latona. Hilarious interview with Boudreu on Hockey Central @ Noon today where they said, “You probably want Washington to suffer but not lose every game” which Bruce follows with, “Who says that? I want them to lose all of them”

Classic. The Crapitals are idiots to switch coaches and to fire Boudreu at all. They opened like 7-0 and then lost, what, something like 8 of 10 and then fire him? Bring in Dale Hunter who was doing a good job (Becuase he coached Girardi and Prust and Co. with the London Kinghts, wink wink) and can him. All for Adam Oates who is apparently running the most complicated defensive system known to man. On a team that is HORRENDOUS on defense.

Ovechkin is STILL Captain. How does that happen? The guy said he would rather stay in Russia like 4 times during the lockout. But he’s your “C”. Right……….

  43. *Let’s all chip in to get JT Miller some housing in this fine city so that he can stay around.*

C’mon, Manny, can’t find an extra 20 square feet in your pod?

  44. Czechthemout!!! on

Mdz just had two playes on offense and defense that reinforce that faxt that he stinks!

  46. (Those all caps weren’t anger, more of a “you can’t triple stamp a double stamp, Lloyd” tone.)

  47. Really, the way Step is playing on the PK there’s no reason Halpern should be dressing going forward unless someone is hurt.

  48. Yes, I am … :) … I forgot at that time that the amnesty buyout cost only one year’s worth of contract, not the old 2/3 of the remaining contract that a straight-out buyout would cost, and which would stay on the cap. This is a compliance buyout, totally different animal, and they could definitely use it on Richards, especially if he deteriorates.

  49. so callahan with the oppurtunity, gets interfered with but that isn’t a penalty. Only the NHL.

  50. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

Last ranger rookie to score 2 goals in their MSG debut – Don Murdoch…Dave Maloney on radio just referenced the game in Minny (murder’s rookie season) in which he scored 5 goals…I remember that game on WOR….i also referenced it the other night with Jimbo, olga, and cooz…

  51. Steve Weatherford here tonight rooting for the Rangers. He was at the Rock two nights ago rooting for the Devils if I’m not mistaken.

  52. >>Um.. that was interference.. but all 60 minutes of the Devils game wasn’t?

    Best laugh I’ve had today.

  53. aBOUT Nash, ranger fans on this blog killed dubinsky for not producing at 4.5m. If Nash doesn’t start producin, 7.8 will be a killer, just saying…

  54. Is Lin boycotting us, Jimbo?

Murdoch no doubt went out on the town for a little while after that multi-goal game. … and some other games.

  55. The sticks are losing, but according to Goring, nobody has played played better than Tavares….just shoot me.

  56. Richards has already deteriorated. He was best of a bad FA class at a time when we could buy a FA. His contract was crazy front loaded. This was all predestined and all parties knew it.

  57. >>Chicago got revenge on Raffi Torres? Anybody?

I guess not, since Bill Pidto didn’t show it in his fastest 120 seconds segment.

  58. I don’t think so, Carp – but she gets pretty “spirited” on FB with her gal-pals!

  59. I haven’t voted, Manny, but I’ll look. I hate Stralman and haven’t hated him once tonight so that must mean something.

  60. Seriously? Tavares has looked like a great player with awful teammates because he’s a great player with awful teammates.

  61. I can’t post/read two places and watch game…..I catch up on FB next day….

LGR!!!! I’ll take this win, any win!!!

  62. The crowd at MSG calling for you in your 2nd game ever has to be just about the coolest thing ever. When I was 19, I was still a year away from peeing in my own dresser on a bad weekend night.

  63. Awwwww. The Kreider gave JT a little helmet pet. What must be going through their barely post- pubescent minds right now? :)

  64. I consider Tavares a decent player, far from a great one. What is it that he does exceptionally well? Anything?

  65. Dang! LOL Olga….

OMG…”Tavares set the tone, but the Rangers….”. I actually want Joe Mich back!!!

  66. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

i voted Boyle, Rupper, Jean Ratelle…..all 3 tied in goals this year

  67. I can’t watch post game on the Tavares channel. Going to boudreau any minute….

Not for nothing, but JT needs a good haircut….

  68. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

JR – “By scoring his first two NHL goals, JT Miller has approximately 2 goals this year”

  69. Manny, ill repeat myself and say that Stralman had a Monster game and imo better than McD. I didnt mind McD’s first penalty but 2 in 1 game really was a risk especially since Isles have a great PP and we’re worse than middle of the pack in PK.

  70. Guess there’s absolutely no problem for the refs or the Rangers when Hank is steamrolled.

  71. I’d like to see a travelogue on Prince Edward Island, but not with Richards and his dad starring. Sorry.

  72. When a rook gets the first star after his second game, teammates watch him closely. They like confidence and brio on the ice, humility off it.

  73. Czechthemout!!! on

I have said this many times on this blog, Ryan McDonagh is the best defenseman on the Rangers. Period!

  74. Czechthemout!!! on

By the way, Stralman played very well today. In fact he was very impressive. Gilroy quitly played a good one as well.

  75. was very angry at Stepan
    twice passing instead of shooting
get s a kick in the aasen
for a couple doopa moves in his zone
to cause a lot of problems
    and then his bad move
    when our top line
    had isles 4th line
    gasping for breath

  76. *Papa Bear January 19th, 2013 at 7:51 pm*

“Brad Richards… vote for the second long term buyout.”

After the 1st period of the 1st game of the year……

  77. Tortorella was (almost) Mister Rogers tonight. “Sorry to keep you fellas waiting so long.” Who was he talking about that he said was spunky, etc., but has ‘crossed the line before elsewhere?'” Asham?

Pistols shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out “My God they killed them all”
Here comes the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been
    The champion of the world.

Three bodies lying there does Patty see
And another man named Bello moving around mysteriously
“I didn’t do it” he says and he throws up his hands
“I was only robbing the register I hope you understand
I saw them leaving” he says and he stops
“One of us had better call up the cops”
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashing
In the hot New Jersey night.

Meanwhile far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driving around
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that
In Patterson that’s just the way things go
If you’re black you might as well not shown up on the street
‘Less you wanna draw the heat.

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the corps
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around
He said “I saw two men running out they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates”
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said “Wait a minute boys this one’s not dead”
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs
The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye
Says “Wha’d you bring him in here for ? He ain’t the guy !”
Yes here comes the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put in a prison cell but one time he could-a been
    The champion of the world.

Four months later the ghettos are in flame
Rubin’s in South America fighting for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley’s still in the robbery game
And the cops are putting the screws to him looking for somebody to blame
“Remember that murder that happened in a bar ?”
“Remember you said you saw the getaway car?”
“You think you’d like to play ball with the law ?”
“Think it might-a been that fighter you saw running that night ?”
“Don’t forget that you are white”.

Arthur Dexter Bradley said “I’m really not sure”
Cops said “A boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we’re talking to your friend Bello
Now you don’t wanta have to go back to jail be a nice fellow
You’ll be doing society a favor
That sonofabitch is brave and getting braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
    He ain’t no Gentleman Jim”.

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It’s my work he’d say and I do it for pay
And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way
    Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin’s cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus he never had a chance
The judge made Rubin’s witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The DA said he was the one who did the deed
    And the all-white jury agreed.

    Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder ‘one’ guess who testified
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool’s hand ?
    To see him obviously framed
Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
    Where justice is a game.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell
That’s the story of the Hurricane
But it won’t be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he’s done
Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been
    The champion of the world.

  83. Was anyone else (like me) a little annoyed that McDonagh didn’t pass the puck, with 2 minutes left and empty net, to JT Miller for the hat trick?

  84. Czech:

Yep, McDonagh became the uncontested best defenseman on the Ranger down the stretch last year and it’s become even more obvious this season. Hard to say whether Staal’s been hindered psychologically by what he went through – fwiw, I always thought he was a bit overrated – but he’s not the player McDonagh is. Girardi, although tough as nails, doesn’t have McDonagh’s versatility. McDonagh skates better than any Rangers defenseman, is a considerably physical presence and will definitely become a bigger offensive force down the line. Best d-man they’ve produced since #2.

  85. Stranger Nation on

putting Nash with Step and Hags is just mean. he must be thinking, where am I, back in Columbus

  86. I told myself I wouldn’t watch “Beginnings: Brad Richards.”

Instead, I’m watching re-reruns of Mr. Ed. …. Er, wait….

  87. Stranger Nation on

NYR – I thought hat for a moment and then remembered Joe Miss said his assist earlier was his first point of the season.

  88. Czech:

Yeah I don’t think he’s nearly as good as some people want to believe he is. Guy has serious defensive shortcomings and isn’t good enough on the other end to justify his liabilities.

You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it’s so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
Upon the beach of sunny Mozambique

  91. Callahan should be left with Miller. Hagelin should be dropped to line 3…he doesn’t belong with the best offensive players. Stepan with Nash was ok but Stepan really needs to man up. Don’t like Hagelin as the other wing at all.

  92. I think they should sign someone named Schaffer and Molson so, with Miller, we can have the Beer Line.

  93. more like Step was glancing up at Boyle in the press box thinking, “That’s me next game.”

  94. E3 pimp's angel on

Funny thing is if rupper had the 2 goals and McD zooming in with rupper on empty net – rupper the positive force in the room that he is – prolly gets that pass for the Hattie.

  95. E3 pimp's angel on

Step hags and Boyle combined will finish the season with the same amount of goals that miller scored in one game

  96. so you’re calling 40-game scoreless droughts for Stepan and Hagelin and a scoreless season for Boyle. that’s harsh, yo.
