Post-practice interviews: Tortorella, Callahan, McDonagh

Ryan Callahan skated with contact today, and he’s not ruling out anything yet … but would not say whether he could play tomorrow (he might). Dan Girardi did not skate and there was no update on his condition (“banged up” still being the official prognosis).

John Tortorella had some interesting things to say about the kids who played last night, about his own culpability in the power play’s failures, and about the guys he said last night were “playing scared … tentative.”

SOG shouldn’t count if they are right into the chest of an unscreened goalminder.

There, I just dropped us to last in the league in SOG

Torts should study why Mayor Koch was so well liked by the media. His motto was ““Feed them, or they will eat you.” You better give them something to write about every day, or they’ll eventually come after YOU.

  3. Np Carp.

Manny’s probably important work to do, while I’m searching tv guides for International Friendly soccer matches.

    No Portugal!

  4. What FSC will do once they lose EPL next season to NBC? Hopefully they’ll switch to la liga or bundesliga, much more enjoyable than dump and chase epl.

  5. well I don’t really have a problem with swapping Boyle and Halpern. to me they’re both 4th line centers anyway. Pyatt doesn’t belong on a 2nd line, nor does Hagelin for that matter. as for having Miller center the 2nd line, I think that’s interesting, but probably only works when Callahan comes back and then you could theoretically drop Stepan down to the third line. of course all of this hinges on Miller continuing to play well which I think is a pretty big expectation. my lines were basically something to just try out for a bit in the next game since you won’t have Callahan and need to find more time for the young guys. If they don’t fall on their faces, you need to keep them on the ice more. You don’t win with Taylor Pyatt getting 2nd line minutes. I like him but he’s not the future of your team.

    Kreider, Richards, Nash.
    Miller, Stepan, Gabby.
    Hagelin/Pyatt, Boyle, Cally.
    Hagelin/Pyatt, Powe, Asham.
not a fan of Cally on 3rd line, but I think this tightens things up, and balances it out.

  7. I said Bein already has the rights to La Liga and Serie A. That wont change. I dont have an issue with FSC’s EPL coverage. As long as nearly every match of (Manchester United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool) is aired live, it’s fine by me. I fear NBC will air things on delay, or fail to show those 5 teams entirely for the likes of Americans like Tim Howard or Clint Dempsey.

  8. One fall day Dave was out raking leaves when he noticed a hearse slowly drive by. Following the first hearse was a second hearse, which was followed by a man walking solemnly along, followed by a dog, and then about 200 men walking in single file. Intrigued, Dave went up to the man following the second hearse and asked him who was in the first hearse. “My wife,” the man replied. “I’m sorry,” said Dave. “What happened to her?” “My dog bit her and she died.” Dave then asked who was in the second hearse. The man replied, “My mother-in-law. My dog bit her and she died as well.” “Can I borrow your dog?” “Get in line.” replied the man.

  9. bull dog,

I think best case scenario is you have Miller centering the second line with Gaborik and Callahan. Kreider Richards and Nash I like a lot…my thing with having Nash play with Stepan while Callahan is out of the lineup is strictly to provide protection for Stepan who is suspect as both a playmaker and has a possessor of male genitalia.

I think you’re basically throwing Callahan away by having him play with Boyle and the Pyatt/Hagelin combo. No playmaking ability there and no one to deliver the puck to a guy who isn’t a creative goal-scorer. I get the idea of balancing lines, but Callahan relies on people to create scoring chances for him, either through playmaking or delivering the puck to the net – I don’t see Boyle, Hagelin or Pyatt doing that.

Standing at the edge of the lake, a man saw a woman flailing about in the deep water. Unable to swim, the man screamed for help. A trout fisherman ran up. The man said, “My wife is drowning and I can’t swim. Please save her. I’ll give you a hundred dollars.” The fisherman dove into the water. In ten powerful strokes he reached the woman, put his arm around her, and swam back to shore. Depositing her at the feet of the man, the fisherman said, “Okay, where’s my hundred dollars?” The man said, “Look, when I saw her going down for the third time, I thought it was my wife. But this is my MIL.” The fisherman reached into his pocket and said, “Just my luck. How much do I owe you?”

  11. Four guys standing on third tee and a funeral cortege passes by adjoining street. One guy removes his Titleist hat and puts it over his heart, then grabs his driver. A member of the foursome says, why the hat thing? Guy replies, ‘that’s my wife. Married to her for 40 years. It’s the least I could do.”

  12. have to love the optimism of Ranger fans

J.T. Miller has played about 30 seconds in the National Hockey League and I’ve already got him centering the 2nd line

  13. Just saw the end of last night’s game while flipping through the channels. The guy who couldn’t hit the empty net scored twice on us. ‘Nuff said.

  14. not really fair to say that since he didn’t get a shot off either time on the empty net and was either well-defended and/or penalized to be denied the hat trick

  15. Guy is playing golf with his wife when he hits one way left. It lands behind a barn. His wife suggests he take an unplayable lie. No, the husband says. “If we open the back and front barn doors, I can get a shot right through the barn.” So they open the doors and he tells his wife to stand back. His shot is a bit too high, hits a beam, comes directly back, hits his wife in the forehead and kills her.

A few years go by, and the same guy is playing with a buddy. The buddy hits one behind the same barn. When it is suggested he take an unplayable lie, the buddy says he thinks he can get one through the barn if they open both the front and back doors.

“No,” the friend tells him. “I tried that a few years ago.”

    “What happened?” said the buddy.

    “Made a double bogey.”

  16. Lloyd,
I know Cally is not a 3rd liner, but my concern is with Boyle. giving him Cally would really help him, and IMO, they need Boyle.

  17. Tiki, I am not a big fan of EPL. I think la liga is more entertaining. NBC won’t have anything to show in the morning, so it will be live. But I wonder how fsc will exist without epl.

  18. Boyle is needed for PK and hits and blocks but I’m really not convinced he offers much else. Boyle to me is one of the more disappointing players in the league since his size is so badly squandered. I’m not disputing the hits and blocked shots – it’s great he does those things – but I view him as such a fundamentally soft player, certainly nowhere near as tough as he should be given his mass and relative lack of offensive ability.

  19. Maybe put Miller and Kreider with Boyle? Give him some youth, speed, energy and size on his wings? The mentor responsibility might be good for him too.

  20. you want to put Miller and Kreider in the best spot to succeed. I don’t think with Boyle is it.

  21. the Boyle mentoring process:

“Ok boys, when you see a player half your size approaching, get ready to fly through the air!”

  22. Bull dog:

Maybe. But puting them on the first or second line might be a lot to ask as they learn the NHL ins and outs. Good chance they would not have to face other teams’ top lines too.

  23. I didn’t know we had so many futebol fans here. NBC is going to ruin it because FSC actually shows almost every EPL game every weekend. I don’t see NBC doing that by putting games on MSNBC or CNBC like FSC does with FSP. They’ll probably show 2, maybe 3 games a weekend.

It’s going to be a disaster.

  24. kovie, here’s an article speculating FSC’s future. http://epltalk.com/2012/10/30/after-losing-epl-to-nbc-what-will-happen-to-fox-soccer/

The funny thing is, they could have used the money they spent on that turd of a show Being: Liverstool to raise their bid for the EPL, but they’d rather have pandered to America’s Boston audience.

Jonny, Exactly. We’ll miss matches we would have otherwise seen, either on FSC or ESPN, and of the matches they show, Id bet they’ll pander to Americans with Dempsey and Howard, like anyone give’s a rat’s tuches about them.

  25. Not seen it, but apparently Lecavalier threw a few shots at Talbot while he was already on the ice too. What goes around doesn’t come around.

  26. my favorite thing about hockeyfights.com is the 3.9% of the voters who saw something other than Rinaldo pound the crap out of B.J. Crombeen

  27. Don’t exactly expect displays of compassion between players punching each other’s brains in, but Rinaldo looked like he was hyped up out of his mind coming away from that fight.

  28. yeah I don’t really have a huge issue with what went on there since Rinaldo was swinging away wildly and was in the act of punching as Crombeen went down.

Can I be serious for a second? I’m honestly sick of reading about Boyle already. Poop or get off the pot. He should be an impact player on every shift, and I instead he’s on the back of Torts’ milk carton. Big Rig better start bringin the ruckus, not only for the Rangers’ sake, but so he doesn’t ruin the rest of his own career. But mostly for the Rangers’ sake.

  30. Fat Guy Duberstein on

Torts should hold up a picture of Eric Lindros in one hand and Brett Lindros in the other, ask ask Boyle which one he wants to be

  31. you’re right. at his size and weight, Boyle should be a menace on the ice. he isn’t. for all of his hits, Boyle doesn’t strike fear in the hearts of the opposition. any player that gets near him that’s even moderately built is capable of tossing him out of the way or bowling him over. there’s no reason that should be happening. Boyle seems like a really nice guy but to be that size and lack a killer instinct is inexcusable. it’s not like Boyle is John LeClair and will put up 90+ points a year (and it’s worth noting that Boyle is actually bigger than LeClair). He’s a 30-point forward. got to become a legit physical presence and not a stat sheet physical presence.

  32. Im not sure Eric Lindros wants to be Eric Lindros. The amount of head injuries he suffered during his career, he’ll be dead by the time he’s 45. ;)

  33. Fat Guy Duberstein on

instead of Big Rig, dude’s nickname should be King Kong Bundy or Killer Kowalski or Gorilla Monsoon or something more fitting of the beast Torts wants him to be

  34. Gravy, You Know You Want Some Marty on

It was pretty obvious that he caught him with the one punch, right before he delivered the other two as Crombeen was going down. There’s been many instances when guys have held up because they knew they popped a guy with a good one.

  35. The other day on a Panthers broadcast the trivia question was “Have the Buffalo Sabres ever won a Stanley Cup?” 23% of the people that answered said “yes”. Oy vey.

  36. I think NBC won’t make that mistake, they know how fsc became successful out of totally nothing.

  37. do you think, judging by that fight video and some other incidents we’ve seen regarding Rinaldo, that he might have some, um, issues?

  38. They showed it last night too…He punched him 3 times after he was already going down, two of those punches when he was actually down…That won’t go too well among the guys who fight for a living in hockey….

  39. I’d love to be a hockey player and Hollweg some people! Every time I played the Bruins, Id take a run at their goalie and land my hit “skates up” instead of “studs up” LOL I’d be Avery’ed out of the league quicker than Avery.

  40. Deportallphilistines on

Brian Boyle seems a nice kid, but unfortunately big.

From earliest days, extra big kids get marked, just like little ones. Often with the wrong markers, applied by the extraordinarily dull and shallow, a fair number of whom can be found among hockey fans in peanut galleries everywhere.

He is not the borderline psychotic little kid now acquiring legions of fans in Philly for his savagery.
He really isn’t mapped, by genes or experience, to take any pleasure in hurting other folks.
That the borderline dull and shallow who run the Rangers, and some of their fans, require him to be something he essentially isn’t, continue to believe that money and fame will enable them to perform this near-impossible task, requires criticism of how they are made, not him.

Head Snidely, off on one of his Butthead missions earlier this season, called another poster’s suggestion that the encounter with Carkner last spring might have had an impact on Brian, absurd.
In typical Toy Department Dudgeon, Head Snidely (although we might have to forgive him since like so many here he was overcome by the vapors from watching Breadbasket Rick, brought here at $8 millions/yr to actually get meaningful pucks PAST goaltenders, because Breadbasket was “buying in” – in the second game of hundreds and hundreds of his gargantuan cap hit) dismissed the notion as unworthy of the blog that honors Briarpatch Orr.

Questionable? Maybe. Wide of the mark? Maybe? A misread? Could be. We all misread.
    But absurd?
Nope. Absurd was watching pre-Carkner Brian doing his best, and sometimes succeeding, to be a genuine force on the ice, and post-Carkner Brian being a shadow of that effective on-ice self, continuing to this season, and then pretending a wisdom that would make that obvious reality
not count, and disrespecting folks who were genuinely aware of it. Occam’s razor in a knockout over Toy Department Dudgeon.

Was Carkner a turning point for Brian? I don’t know. (Prust is in this equation, for sure, among a hundred variables). Evidence suggests it MIGHT have been.
Evidence suggests it’s at least worth pondering, unless you’re his brother, or Dad, and have more complex grounds to examine the question.

Will Brian sell his soul, and have surgery to remap his essentially gentle brain, so he can be a hero to Always-Twelve-Years-Old car wreck fans? Probably not.

  41. Agree that Boyle is what he is, and we shouldn’t expect from him more physically, it isn’t his nature. On the second long part- from a scientific point of view EVIDENCE and MIGHT HAVE BEEN do not go together that well
