this first thing is easy when you live in Alaska and have no job
Powe, Mashinter and Miller.
an entire new fourth line. That has to be some kind of record.
Lauri Korpikoski was named 3rd star of Phoenix-Wild game, including a goal, 4 shots and 3 hits…and what was the name of that speedster we traded him for? Kelly Chase of NHL Tonight put the Rangers in his top 5 in the power rankings…I’m on optimist, too. Looking forward to a follow-up win tonight. Will be interesting to watch JT Miller, if he plays.
I’m hoping Miller gets a start on the 3rd line, i dont think a cold and splintered derriere is going to teach the kid anything
Enver Lisin – currently plying his trade with Metallurg in the KHL and has amassed totals of 25 and 14 pts in 2 seasons – which confirms that hea really was just the Russian Luis Mendoza
Tomb you still get that oil check every year, right?
oh yea.
Good morning, boneheads!
Should be a great game. Time to get over .500.
well at least there’s that then. and brodiva getting lit up tonight by JT MILLAH!!!
Not sure if Miller is given shut down responsibilities on 3rd line v Debs.
More likely Hags goes to down to third, Miller to 2nd or Miller on 4th.
Who’s ready for some more mediocrity?!
Powe with the ot winner shorthanded.
this should be a great game tonight
I just need to get a few hours of sleep first.
It’s #MillerTime!!!! Pretty excited to see him play! Does he get a point tonight?
we should find out soon once the practice lines are posted by one of the beat writers on twitter.
Miller is a big lad (6’2” 212lbs) and plays a 2-way game so if Torts likes the look of his skating and awareness i wouldnt be surprised to see him on the 3rd line rather than 4th
I can see Stevie Minger finally crashing through the 100 career point barrier tonight.
POW!
LW – it’ll take Minger all year to break that i reckon!
Would not put Pyatt on Line 3 unless you move Hags down there also. His ‘deliberate’ skating style paired with Boyle makes for an ineffective (slow) fore-check. He is good at anticipating the play and winning 50/50 battles along boards – perfect match with Hags or another speedy skater who forces the Dman to get rid of it early.
That and the Tim Kerr impersonation in front of the crease.
Kovie- shouldn’t that be:
POWE – right in the kisser.
So, the Ferrari has been garaged. Maybe Torts doesn’t know how to handle a finely oiled machine. lol
Let’s Go Rangers
Miller pulls a Stepan. Hat trick in his first game!
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Henrik Lundqvist has faced-off against Martin Brodeur in 34 career regular season games, posting a record of 23-6-5 with a 1.73 GAA, .935 Sv% and five shutouts over the span.
Marty is Hank’s female dog.
I hope we don’t take any penalties tonight, but if we do, I am excited to see POW! get into action with the PK. I assume he and Boyle will be one unit with Dr. Halpern and Stepan/Hagelin on the other. Really does clear up a lot of dirty work from Monster Nash’s plate as well as Callahan.
Maybe Tort goes back to the passive box PK now that he has another legit PK’er.
I don’t know if Torts will be able to keep another person with JT initials similar to his. Confusing. I bet he already hates Miller….:-)
Miller Time:
Less Taste – Great Filling
I thought that JT Miller, a/k/a John Tort-Miller, was just a child of Tort from an estranged ex-lover. Thus, John Tort-Miller was just a love child.
Some good Bobby Orr discussion in the last thread. My favorite footnote about his career is Harry Howell’s quote after winning the Norris “I’m glad I won it now, because it’s going to belong to that Orr from now on.” Prophetic.
Just to clear something up from last night about the Palmieri boys (who aren’t related), they are BOTH from NY.
Nick Palmieri (23) is from Clinton, NY and Kyle Palmieri (22) is from Smithtown, NY.
I basically live in Smithtown.
I still don’t expect Miller to play. It really makes no sense right now
oleo – I believe you are correct
Good morning all! Happy 26th birthday to Anthony from AZ!
No way. JT miller is up here to play. Doesn’t he have to get on the ice for that whole Entry Level Contrac thing?
He has to play in more than 5 games for the 1st year of his ELC to kick in
Giles Marotte > bobby Orr
So you’d rather have Miller come up and not play? Or in another way to look at it, you’d like to have Bickel to continue to play?
not sure how much they change the top 3 lines after last game
4th line – Mash – Miller – Bickels
Powe instead of Bickel
Haha. Exactly, CT. JT Miller is up here to get out on the ice and get a taste of the NHL. He earned it. Also, Miller is not playing 4th line minutes.
JT Miller > Stuart and his Bickels (unless we are referring to punching Cam Janssen)
over / under
JTM TOI = 3 minutes
OVER
CCCP. He’s not here to play less than eight (8) Minutes. Put the over/under at something reasonable like 7:40.Rangers are going to get steamrolled tonight. With all the injuries and the AHL guys coming up (Miller included), no way they win this. Will be a good learning experience though for Miller.
Some googling led me to see that Mike Rupp was a 9th overall pick by the Islanders in 1998… How the hell did that happen?
Monster Nash-Richards-Gaborik
HaGOONlin-Stepan-Pyatt
Big Rig Boyle-Dr. Halpern-J-Tort Miller
Monster Mashinter-POW!-Asham
Stahl-McBust
Girardi-Del Zaster
Gilroy-Strahlman
*****************
And of course the top guys will eventually play themselves onto and off of the line they begin on.
Don’t think they’re breaking up McD and Girardi
I’m shocked that he got picked that high too Lev. But Rupp probably got picked early because, especially in 1998, a man of that humaingous stature, that (at the time) could skate, that is hard to pass up.
Some googling led me to see that Mike Rupp was a 9th overall pick by the Islanders in 1998… How the hell did that happen?
He got drafted this high because of his personality, apparently. Oh and plus he’s big.
Powe should play with 3rd line and Ass-ham moves down to 4th – thought Halpern played well on 3rd line last game, skating much better, and is another FO guy if Boyle inevitably gets thrown out of FO.
comes down to Bicks or Mash on line 4 for the Barch dance.
1998 wasn’t a particularly deep draft year.
Mike Rupp was a 9th overall pick by the Islanders in 1998
that is why he was picked 9th
Yea. Sorry. I didn’t mean to break them up either. I usually just type my defensive pairings in a huge rush because they are so good it barely matters.
Manny
i see you put a lot of hope on JTM… i wont let you cry on my shoulder after tonight’s game, if you know what i mean ;)
http://www.hockey-reference.com/draft/NHL_1998_entry.html
what about crying on your shoulder during tonight’s game?
Are you hitting on me,
CCCP?Manny – The Lindros Syndrome. Teams tried to find the next Lindros for over a decade to match that new mold in the NHL of a big strong power forwards who could fight, hit, and be offense monsters. Why else do you think Hugh Jessiman was drafted in the 1st round (outside of the fact that Slats was golfing)?
So I’d assume they saw a young player with a big body who they were hoping could grow into that kind of player, which everyone found out was impossible since there was only one Eric Lindros. Plus he ended up getting drafted 2 years later by the Devils in the 3rd round anyway when it proved that he didn’t turn into the offensive player the Isles were hoping for.
CT,clearly not. Ye I guess they drafted simply on size back then. Remember folks, size matters.
BTW, the only chance we have tonight is if Miller scored 6 goals in his debut. He’ll do it. I have faith in him…
Rupp and Antropov drafted back to back, combined 13+ feet of disappointment
Am I, Manny? Am I?? :)
CT
There be a lot of crying later tonight so get in line! I only have TWO shoulders!
Good morning, Carp!
Happy 26th to Pantsless Tony from AZ!!!
who’s shoulder do you cry on?
Tom Pot – hardest hitting D man I ever saw. Dude was a monster. His fan club – the pot heads- were always dazed after his play.
Poti
Tom Poti! The darling of the Washing Crapitals.
the palmieri boys are brothers right?
Only 3 days apart from the real Kenny Albert, today is my birthday. Let’s get a victory boys.
the palmieri boys are brothers right?
NO!
YES!
WHAT IS LOVE…BABY DON’T HURT ME!
“My God! The Scoleri Brothers! l tried them for murder! Gave them the chair!”
Happy 26th, Kenny!
Derbils get Gomez and Gionta, Isles get Rupp and Nielsen and we got Manny and Copley – wonder who won a cup within the next 5 years…

NYDNRangersDevils board anticipates Stralman out, Bickel on D, lines of Powe-Boyle-Halpern, Mashinter-Miller-Asham for #NYRThat can’t be right. I thought Boyle was being moved to LW? Wasn’t that the plan? Strahlman is hurt?
Hockey Hockey Hockey – Oye! Oye! Oye!
Time for some OLD TiME Hockey!!!
Side bets – what’s the over and under on fights tonight? 4-5-6 ????
Does Miller get more than 6 minuts of ice time???
Does the Monster Mash win his 1’st fight as a Ranger?
Does Hank win another against Marty?
Love that Pavel Datsyuk is drafted in the 6th round. Always forget that.
They figured they’d need some extra bickells tonight I guess. Either that, or they want to make sure someone wins the opening face off.
Happy 26th, Anthony from AZ!
And Happy 26th local Kenny Albert!
Happy Birthday, TONY!
Refresh, Refresh, Refresh!!!
Happy 26th Anthony!!
Happy 26th Kenny Albert Rules!!
That cantbe performance based right?Stralman has been one of the better players….Datsyuk in 6th round? What a freaking steal.
Happy Birthday Tony!!! Make it a GREAT Day!!!
Miller should bounce between the 3rd and 4th line tonight.
It would be nice to see him a shift or two with Hagelin and Stepan. But I’m sure Tort’s will put him in a couple of different spots to see what he has to offer.
What a FIRST game to play. Against one of our Biggest Rivals.
Just think if his 1’st goal is against …. MARTY!
No way Strahlman would be out because of performance. He would have to have been hurt. I think he was limping a bit during the 3rd period of the Lightning game but I didn’t see anything about him missing practice or skates.
I guess it’s wrong because its from a Devils board. Boyle is playing LW, not center, and as I have assumed, Miller is not playing 4th line.
Bickel will be against the Devils. Rangers need to win the opening faceoff :)
KatieStrangESPN#NYR Both Callahan (shoulder) and Kreider (ankle) are out there as well for NYR. Callahan definitely out for tonight, *[THE] Kreider questionable*************
No mention about Strahlman being out. The Kreider questionable….hmmmm
AGrossRecordStu Bickel wearing a red defenseman’s practice jersey at #NYR morning skate.*********************
Playing over Gilroy (assuming Strahlman is OK)? Is it worth it for Bickel to play just so he can punch someone in the face and spend 17 Minutes in the Box?
Datsyuk was a steal at 171 overall in his draft, but Lundqvist was a bigger one at 205.
guessing here but since boyle is being moved to LW the 3rd line probably will be miller at center with powe and boyle on wing.
Manny – Datsyuk will never amount to much
Manny – Like your earlier line-up but agree with CtBlueshirt on defensive pairings
I like that, Tommy. I really doubt Miller is on the 4th line.
Popeye Boyle was excellent in the French connection
Must win tonight!!!
It’s Miller time
JT Miller is going to look at uncle daddy tonight and see how much bigger players are at this level.
“Mommy, how is my cousin also my sister?”
E3 – if you have the time…
There is going to be a whole issue with lineups tonight. Tort is probably still mad about Peter TheBore getting that last minute goon lineup out there.

Pat Leonard ?@NYDNRangers@ Stralman is playing tonight #NYR
Pat Leonard:
NYDNRangersStralman is playing tonight #NYRBetter?
I met Marty on Monday, it was my lucky bun day, you know what I mean…. We love him each weekday, each velvety cheek day, you what I mean…..Marty’s struggling inside his tights, big game waiting in my sights….. How could I leave this behind?
gilly sits, Bickel opens gate and Stralman plays ist group pp
Big bottom, big bottom, Talk about love flaps, Marty’s got them…
Cage match – Marty vs Chris Christie – only problem, ain’t no cage big enough.
Happy 26th, Anthony from AZ!
& Kenny Albert Rules!
Good crack of noon, Sally!
Why wouldn’t Stralman play? Anybody?
Marty says to a blue whale – ” hey lil fella, what’s your name?”
Because Torts hates him?
Carp – there was a report.tweet from Pat Leonard saying the Devils expected Strahlman to be out tonight. No one here believed it so we got RIGHT to the bottom of it.
It’s Bickel and Gilly time
Stralman moving and shooting too much on the PP?
Aristophenes.
I think that tweet said Devils board … um, unlike our readers here, some boards are wrong sometimes.
Mashinter back to the Whale, per Dan Rosen… was here in case Powe didn’t arrive in time.
I guess Mashinter isn’t great on faceoffs….
Monster Mashinter is gone! Um…that has to mean that THE Kreider can play, right? I mean if Bickel is skating in a defensemans Jersey?
which leaves the minimum 12 forwards with Bickel up front: Gaborik-Richards-Nash, Hagelin-Stepan-Pyatt, then some combos of Boyle, Halpern, Asham, Miller, Powe and Bickel.
Stralman has been Avery’ed
or Kreider. Right.
You’re going to the moon Alice – Powe
Yea, Carp. That’s my concern. We don’t have enough forwards if Bickel is skating in defenseman’s Jersey.
Again, this could just be some mind play from Tort to stick it to Peter TheBore for his annoying lineup tactics.
He doesn’t want to announce Bickel as the starting center?
Chris Christie will be at the game but needs two sections…..........He needs to be 180 degrees opposite Marty at all times for the obvious reason….
I think Kreider thinks he’s ready and they’re deciding if he’s going to play, too.
You just know Torts would love to go with TheBore
if they don’t have enough forwards, Bickel goes up, that simple.
Exactly, Carp. Remember. TheBore at home tonight so he gets the final say. Maybe Tort is trying to screw with him by putting Bickel on Defense and Callahan and The Kreider in full contact jerseys.
Doug Butabi: You can take away our phones and you can take away our keys, but you can NOT take away our dreams.
Steve Butabi: Yeah, because we’re, like, sleeping when we have them.
Manny, gchat
I took “Devils board” to mean a line-up board in their room, rather than a worst blog on the internets message board.
Maybe Strawhlman has been erased from the Devils’ minds after his try out with them last year? Surprised Lou Lam would ever let anyone from the outside see a line-up board in the room though. Thought he would have it covered up or have Chris Christie stand in front of it.
why would stralman be out of lineup. i am traveling this week so is there an injury i didnt see. also bickel shouldnt be in over gilroy but we all know torts will put him in for toughness. dont agree with it but thats his call
Doug Butabi – that was also the central theme in Solzhenitsyn’s “The First Circle”

am I the first to make that joke? I can’t be, right?
It seems a new astronomical phenomena has been discovered….A Christie eclipse… The Gov goes outside and the world sees darkness.
Steve Butabi: Good, how are you?
Doug Butabi: About 8 o’clock, 8:15. Yeah, all the time.
Steve Butabi: BMW.
Doug Butabi: Right at sunset.
Steve Butabi: Vanilla mostly.
Happy 26th Tony and LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!
according Zipay it’s possible Kreider could be playing tonight.
>> Kelly Chase of NHL Tonight put the Rangers in his top 5 in the power rankings…
Another clueless analyst! I had a good laugh hearing him extol Rupp’s value on NHLN last night.
BREAKING NEWS: JUSTIN BIEBER AND SELENA GOMEZ ARE BACK TOGETHER!
Here’s one of POW’s fights. Looks like this hombre takes little crap. nobody could replace Prust but this could be step in the right direction. Feel Kreider will start vs. the Isles on thurs.
http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/109944
Justin Beiber has more facial hair than skid.
Interesting stat: Avery and Boyle are tied in goals scored this season
Stepan for Getzlaf!
This roster we’re putting out there tonight looks awful. Can’t wait!
I really hope Kreider isn’t rushing himself back. Can’t wait for Callahan to get back either, although even after that, the team doesn’t have much depth at all at the forward position.
Happy Birthday Anthony from AZ!!
Kreider thinks he’s ready …
Depth? Paging Sean Avery
Do we know who’s playing tonight yet?
Bickel, Gilroy, Miller, Powe in?
Stralman, Eminger, Kreider likely out?
If kreider plays than mashinster would be out.
Sauer in tonight?
Mashinster is in CT I thought
no, mashinster was called up with Miller.
Kreider-Miller-Boyle Could make for a sick 3rd line. Size-Speed-Skill!!! Pass-Shoot-Score
This could happen TONIGHT!!!

A tweet from 43 minutes ago says he’s back with the Whale
if that is the case than kreider is playing tonight.
tommy,
Carp February 5th, 2013 at 12:12 pm
Mashinter back to the Whale, per Dan Rosen… was here in case Powe didn’t arrive in time.
4th line Powe-Halpren-Asham
The Tort’s shuffle will be working tonight that’s for sure!!!
Mashinter was sent back down. He WAS up. Not any more.
ok, fair enough, didn’t see that tweet.
Yes. Mashinter in the AHL + Bickel in a Defense Sweater = The Kreider playing. What a 3rd line that will make if it’s The Kreider and J-Tort Miller centre’d by Boyle. Their big brother.
http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/115399
Murrray = Monster
If I had to bet, Kreider will be up front, Bickel on defense (until he gets his 17 minutes of penalties against Barch), Gilroy scratched.
And, yes, Miller between Boyle and Kreider works for me, with Halpern subbing for Kreider or Miller in defensive zone situations.
stralman is in tonight. no chance he does not play unless he is hurt or sick.
That sounds great, Carp.
Sorry about that Sioux. I didn’t see you were psyched about the 3rd line as well but earlier!
Carp – How did Miller look at the pre skate?
Hard to see from here :)
Did you guys hear that two out of three Stahl brothers scored last night?
This picture is hysterical. Look at Reimer trying to get a little help on the wide open guy in the center of the ice…
http://blogimages.thescore.com/nhl/files/2013/02/staal-goal.jpg
Looks exactly like the Timonen goal vs. NYR before it happened.
Kreider with Miller and Boyle on one line puts a lot of defensive responsibilities on the 2 younguns – I am all for it – need to get our pups up here if and when ready especially a pivot in the middle.
Who was the last 1st or 2nd line center drafted by the team?
Yup.
I think Malholtra played a shift as a 2nd line center.
You mean, the one that turned out to actually be a first- or second-line center? You’re not counting Stepan and Anisimov, right?
Geez. Turcotte?
Kreider – Miller – Boyle might cause me to do something gross.
Carp when you write “Turcotte” you’re supposed to follow it with…”shoots it wide”...
Don’t know why we’re discussing Rangers OR Devils. We need to talk more about the re-emergence of the NY Islanders.
I have Manny Malholtra’s autograph on one of my jersey’s ala the back parking lot at Rye Playland. Too bad he was never going to amount to anything here…Right Coach Muckler????
Marc Savard counts if you don’t mean he had to play for the Rangers when he became that.
Sergei Nemchinov?
Good point on the defensive side. Will have to shuffle through the lines again. Swap Powe for Miller, and work him up later.
Torts has lots to play with shuffle up and deal, let’s hope they click quick and score often.
I’m thinking I need a Miller autographed jersey :)
SARGE!!!
Or Doug Weight.
I’m just going to have J-Tort Miller sign my chest. I am not supporting the NHL by purchasing a $400 sweater!
Sarge was quietly one of the most solid wingers this team has had in the 90s. . Kovalev got the spot light and the expectations that came along with it but Nemchinov was gave them more offense with 20-30 goal season year after year. And that was before they opened things up for goal scorers with the red line elimination etc..
Centers who are home grown? orrrrr can I mention mid-30s Ray Ferraro as a decent 2nd line center? lol
PS- shoulda said c/lw when speaking about Nemchinov
Latona – Childe Harold!
Go to Love Byron included in “Post Practice Interviews.”
Lord Byron?
No more late night sparring with E3. He’s bright as a daisy on the West Coast and I’m in NY, drunk on the moon and dead poets.
Nemchinov was rock steady – amazing 2 way center – shutting down other teams top pivot and putting points on the board as well. That ‘94 team centers – had Messier – Kovalev – Nemchinov – not too shabby down the middle.
Selected by Rangers in Round 12 of 1990 NHL Entry Draft (No. 244 overall).
Outside of Hank may be best value draft pick in the last 25 years
Along with Kovalev, became the first Russian player to ever win the Stanley Cup.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times:

JT Miller, 6-7 hours before his NHL debut: “I have been looking forward to this ever since
yesterdayI was a little kid”George Gordon Lord Byron, Manny. Yes, dat be the dude. If Winter’s here, can Spring be far behind? If Keats is here, can Shelley have a fat behind? Hockey and Iambic Pentameter.
JT Miller is 6’7? This is the problem I have when I read only the first part of comments.
Nemchinov, Kovalev, Zubov and Karpovtsev = first Russians on the Cup.
J-Tort Miller is 6’1”.
I think he goes by J-Torts, not Tort
Darn it,
Fat GuyD. Duberstein. We’ve been over this. Why don’t you work on correcting that link that goes nowhere instead of picking on me! BULLY!
Leech should play the wing.
How many Rangers with initials rather than a name have there been?
JT Miller
PA Parenteau
RJ Umberger (kinda)

prediction: after loss of locker room leader and Stanley Cup winning goal scorer Mike Rupp, 2013 NY Rangers go winless the rest of the way
“Pre….prediction. You’ll be calling me to ask if you can come and visit him before the month is out.” – Gavin

Say what you will about Jessiman, Brendl, Lundmark, etc. The worst ever Rangers draft pick was Ron Duguay, because Mike Bossy went two picks later.
JJ Daigneault in CT.

Stranger Nation: Don’t forget the helmet-less wonder Craig MacTavish.
KennyAlbertIn fact, 30% of Matt Gilroy’s NHL goals (3 of 10) have come against Brodeur…all at The Rock…with 3 different teams**************************
Bickle’s fight better be awesome!
In the notes it was mentioned that there are no former Rangers on the (revolting) devilopments. I know he never played for the Rangers (or even had a contract) but couldn’t you call Zidlicky a former Rag? He was drafted by them and that’s enough for me.
stranger, don’t forget Karpovtsev and Zubov as other first Russian Cup winners.
Or PJ Stock.
Am I the only one worried by the fact that our “depth” at forward includes a defenseman (2 actually, if you count Gilroy)?
I don’t care if he can play there or not, Bickel’s job description is first and foremost a defenseman.
Hopefully Pow-er Station and the call-ups can now render that move almost unnecessary.
God, it seems like forever since they’ve played a game.
It seems like forever until they drop the damn puck! Under 4 hours and counting.
Evrockriser:
No, you’re absolutely right. I really hope that Powe plays well because this land of make-believe where Matt Gilroy and Stu Bickel are forwards needs to stop
Manny – Sorry for the bad trip. This one is not exactly the same one, but I think you’ll get the pernt:
http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/2013/02/03/beyonce-knowles-just-won-the-super-bowl/
Neither of them will be considered forwards when Capt. Callahan comes back and The Kreider is a solid player in the lineup. Then we will be OK. Who knows, maybe we will carry 13 forwards!
If Gilroy isn’t in the lineup tonight, fire Torts. You don’t need to have a Bellicheck-level mastery of statistics to understand he is a LOCK to score a hat trick against Brodeur
She’s really something special…
Ohh, yeah … Douglass Murray is a real monster:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DF5CfSylQwY
It has Doodie.
#MillerTime is going to be fun to watch!!!
All this hype about the new guys. We tend to forget our top line is pretty good.
We have the release of the KREIDER, the Monster-Nash, and Taste Great Less Filling debute tonight!!!
Carp – i still cringe over the Zubov trade!
Led the 94 cup team in scoring – a team stacke with Messier, Leetch, Graves, Larmer, Kovalev, etc….
Aaron Ass-Sham
What’d I miss? How are the Islanders? have they re-emerged?
Found done bios of the 1998 draft prospects here: http://www.lcshockey.com/issues/101/101entrydraft.asp
For Mike Rupp:
“One of four American-born players who participated in the 1998 Top Prospects Game. Big specimen whose actual weight may be closer to 230 pounds. Just completed his first year of major junior hockey, one in which he was traded from Windsor to Erie for NHL first-round draft pick Jason Ward. Doesn’t have a lot of experience against top-flight competition, but has a heavy shot and can be a physical presence. ‘He battles his way to the net, where he works for his scoring opportunities’, said NHL Central Scouting, which ranked him 23rd among draft prospects.”
I actually remember well when Rupp first came into the league and yeah some folks had him pegged to be the next John LeClair
then they saw him play at the pro level and scaled back their projections radically
. . . . 15 years later, a stanley cup champion goal scorer, and he is still playing!!! Hell of a career for Rupper!!!
that’s a joke, right
He did have a knack for the clutch, big spotlight style goals. Not that they were pretty or anything.
he scored one in his career, albeit in the second period of the game
unless you think scoring in January is massive
Cup Clinching goal and Uncontested Hero of the Winter Classic, 2011-2012.
scored in game on January 2 (don’t recall him making an appearance in the Spring, though) – didn’t score the game winner and certainly wasn’t wearing a 35 jersey that day. but yeah, he had a couple of goals.
scored in 2nd period of Stanley Cup game 7, 10 years ago.
oops forgot the 2 winter classic goals…... other than that we’re good!!!
Actually he might help the Wild.
Rangers win in this deal, for sure, money saved, better versatility for Torts. and a much needed Pruster replacement!!! on the penalty kill. Which in now at 78% something like 18th in the league. Yuck!
you guys who call the players by nicknames, are you on the Rangers or close, personal friends with them
Don’t be mean, Lloyd. I think that since we pour our hearts into the team it’s acceptable to use the same names that the reporters and players use to describe each other.
I, however, prefer the nicknames that we make up.
I still don’t like the idea of Miller on the 4th line. Gonna be tough for him to contribute when he’s not on the ice.
Then again, with Rupp and Bickel off the 4th line, they do have some guys with some skill there now. Asham and Powe aren’t going to score many goals, but they do have the ability to hit the net.
there was a whole thing here a week or so ago about how dumb the reporters sound when they say nonsense like, “Coach, what happened with Pruster tonight? Did he just not gel with Rupper or what?”
Both sides are happy with the trade. But I think the WILD think they are getting the player Rupper was 2-3 years ago.
God business meetings are long and tedious. Get me to 700.
putting Miller on the 4th line is really dumb not exactly surprising
I’m looking forward to seeing Millerer tonight. And hope Kreiderer is back.
I think we are too quick to forget – Rupp was/is well loved by his teammates. He won us the Outdoor Classic against Filthy. He was a consummate team-first player.
No, he doesnt fly down the ice. No, he isn’t going to score like Giroux (yea, I said it) BUT… he was a Ranger and made the organization proud.
This isn’t a rah-rah story…. but much like Wade Redden, cant we be happy for them? What did Wade do wrong? Signed a contract for too much money? Whom of us wouldnt be guilty of smiling and saying thank you were we so fortunate? Guy sat in the AHL and developed players and you never heard about him… because he simply did his job.
Now for a fearless prediction with the removal of my Soapbox: Nash gets on the board… as does the Kreider with a third present off the stick of none other than McMonster. The fourth will come off of…. Staal’s stick. 4-2, possibly 4-3 victory for our boys in Blue.
Must be tiring to have all the answers Harry’s friend – Pruster sounds silly but Rupper rhymes with supper so…. it’s got that going for it.
eric, aren’t you only in your thirties? You’ve got a long way to go before you reach 700. I’m sure the journey will include many more business meetings as well.
you people have created a mythology around Mike Rupp that is, quite frankly, a little bit scary. he put up 5 points as a Ranger. 2 of them were crappy goals in a game in January. he couldn’t skate, couldn’t fight, and certainly couldn’t score. for most of his tenure as a Ranger he should have been a healthy scratch. but because the coach kept telling everyone he was such a great locker room guy, some deluded fans decided he was a key component. he’s gone and, just a hunch, you won’t miss him.
We have nicknames for a lot of players (which we can all use because we OWN them, man):

Lloyd – there was also a question, maybe in a live chat a/k/a CHARP, where someone asked Carp about the reporters using nicknames, like, “is Cally playing tonight” or “what’s up with Rupper” etc…
What little term of endearment might Torts use for Carp when the lights and cameras are off?
Tort calls him Carps.
Teethchards :). Or Edchards..
Ricky
Llloyd – It’s also scary to have someone whose not in the locker-room judging someones value…. in the locker-room.
Fact of the matter is that I’d never accuse Torts of playing someone out of sentimental value… or for any reason outside of the best interest of the team’s winning record. Sure, there might be a spite benching hear or there, but they didn’t keep him around for his smile.
there was a nickname for Gaborik that I’ve forgotten. never had a clue who it referred to and had to ask multiple times who it was…could have been about something to do with his teeth, head, jaw, dunno
Oh, right. Good call, Lloyd. That was ORR’s nickname referring to Gaborik as “Butt-Chin”
Dudley:
I’m not judging his value in the locker room. For all I know, the guy could have been Siddhartha in the locker room. All I can go by is what I saw on the ice, and on the ice he was terrible. Yes, the locker room stuff counts for something up to a point, but you have to produce outside the locker room, too. He seemed to have the locker room and spewing cliches to the press down cold; other areas, not so much.
Anyone remember the Rangers’ last Miller? Miller the Driller, the Cavity Filler?
No profane jokes allowed. He was, of course, the team dentist.
ahaha yeah, butt-chin
also, “Carp” has been trending on Twitter for the last hour
B Rich – $$$$
MillerTime: sorry J-Torts just sounds dumb
Big Rig – some games anyway, the Green Monster?
Ritchie Rich.
I do really like the nickname Big-Rig and I find it funny that they just stripped Boyle of that nickname.
MillerTime is ok. Also, he kind of looks like a Horrifying frat-boy turned criminal:
http://cdn2-www.hockeysfuture.com/assets/uploads/img/user_uploaded_img/jt_miller.jpg
Maybe we can make up some criminal name for him.
the Rangers had both Kevin Miller, and Kelly Miller play for them.
Who is Kelly Miller? Is she better looking than Lauri Korpikoski?
what was Richard Chambers called? the preppie killer?
we’ve got the preppie miller
Machine Gun Miller. John Sterling: It is high, it is far, it is in…Whoa, another Thrilla from the Milla…Miller writes another big Play, wait a minute, that puck was caught, no it was blocked…
Roman Hamrlik has been a healthy scratch for the Caps for awhile now. would he be worth trying to pry away? would probably come cheap.
bull dog:
fwiw, that exact same thing was posted last season, too. not sure why no one seems to want him.
he would be an upgrade over Giroy, Eminger, and Bickel.
Hamrlik? He must be scratched for a reason. He’s better than most of their D-Men, and at $3.5M in cap hit, they would probably just move him if he wasn’t going to touch the ice. I think they can’t even put him on LTIR because he’s over 35, right?
Also, he’s really expensive (especially compared to our current D-Guys) but his contract does expire after this year. It would be fun to play the Islanders with Hamrlik on the ice against Hamonic.
Could it be *$3.5M* cap hit?
yeah but as Manny pointed out he’s in the last year of his contract anyway
http://capgeek.com/player/82 < —-There is Roman Hamrlik's contract status.
I guess the Caps just like Kundratek more than Hamrlik. I don’t know why they wouldn’t trade him if he wasn’t going to get on the ice. Guy was a 30PT per season defenseman. He’s just old now.
Weren’t we supposedly trading for hamerlik for like 3 years? I remember there was even a bogus report on like nhlrumors.com or one of those mediocre sites that the deal was done back in the early 2000s
Ugh, MOVE clock.
Where’s impostORR? I need my fix.
Predictions for the kid’s first game tonight?
No, YOU slow down.

Rupper17 Thanks to all the unbelievable wishes from the NYR fans. Truly an honor to put that sweater on, with the opportunity to play for you all!
love the “salute” hashtag from Rupp.
Miller stars slow, then by the 3rd period he is one of the Rangers better forwards. Torts is going to love Miller, he already plays the Ranger way.
I am curios to see if Kreider plays tonight. glad to hear he is pushing for it.
really hope Kreider plays. would suck if Mashinter was shipped back to Hartford so either Bickel or Gilroy could play forward again
Rupp was pretty useless for the Rangers, but I usually give guys who play injured some credit. He had a bum knee all last year and played through it in the second half, so he wasn’t 100% healthy (although I don’t think it mattered much in his point totals).
Kind of like how Rangers fans couldn’t wait to bash Rozsival once he was off the team, forgetting that the guy through multiple injuries (I believe he had 2 knee surgeries and a hip surgery while with the Rangers) and contributed a lot to the Rangers success back then.
agreed. Can’t judge him on what we saw the first 3 games. He may surprise people.
when did Rupp contribute a lot to the Rangers success
Mashinter’s gone back cos Kreider and Powe are in
Powe will have to be nicknamed Con-Air
Hamrlik can’t skate anymore. That why he doesn’t play. All of their other d-men can move well (even Poti), so that’s why he hasn’t been playing.
Lloyd – he didn’t. I was just saying he played injured and compared him to Rozsival, who contributed a lot more and people still hated him and couldn’t wait for him to leave.
Are you guys having another jackwagon festival?
Woowee, another Sather folly! Has anyone suggested this, and for sure the Stars two players salaries don’t equal Rupp’s! They have a roster of non scoring defensive types on three lines!
Does the Sleepy one get a bonus for dumping salary when he makes yet another mistake in judgement? He’s a stiff but those darned pictures work wonders! lol
If Mashinter plays in NHL, their salaries equal Rupp’s….

I like the name Con-Air! But I also like POW!
Lloyd, I agree to disagree but for the record, you just dominated the disagreement by referencing Siddhartha… which forced me to picture a hybrid between Rupper and Siddhartha in the lockerroom interfacing with Torts…. err, Tortorella.
WHY tomb. Why!? That makes me so upset.
Siddhartha wasn’t all good. Doesn’t he give up on the holy life to go womanize and make lots of money at one point? I think he excels at being a “bad person” at some point in that novella.
Any truth to the rumor that chris christy just ate the blue lines thinking it was icing off of a cake?
I know many in the media like to praise Tortorella for his work with the “kids,” but candidly, I don’t see it. His heavy-handed way of dealing with many of the young prospects has done little to advance their improvement and, I believe has sapped their confidence at times. I don’t believe Gilroy is anything more than a bottom pair defenseman, but the coach’s handling of him during his first stint with the Rangers hurt his development, in my opinion. It certainly seemed to hurt his confidence. During his first stint, he seemed to play scared to make a mistake. That’s no way to maximize potential. Calling young players out on the bench during a game and then benching them for long stretches, followed by banishing him to the press box doesn’t help a young player starting his career, nor does relegating him to the fourth line when the coach routinely rolls two lines, the occasional third line and virtually no fourth line. If a kid isn’t ready for the NHL, send him back down to the AHL and ensure that he’s being taught the system you want him to be able to play in the NHL and has enough time on the ice to be able to improve and implement the system. Having a kid like Kreider play on the fourth line with the likes of Rupp and Bickel does nothing to help his development and certainly doesn’t provide him with the type of linemates that would allow him to play to his strengths. Furthermore, it doesn’t allow anyone observing him to adequately assess what he is capable of doing. The jury is still out on Kreider, but I get the sense he raises his game when he’s playing with people who have real ability. I don’t believe his play during the playoffs was a fluke. However, if you fail to let a thoroughbred run, but instead hitch him to a wagon, don’t be surprised if he performs like a donkey.
Ask Vincent Lecavalier about Tortorella’s ability to develop kids.
Oh the humanity! Oh the humanity tomb…
Don’t need to. Others already have. I think, based upon his comments he wouldn’t necessarily take issue with what I opined:
http://www.tampabay.com/sports/hockey/lightning/article616883.ece
Ryan NcDonagh did ok too. MDZ. Callahan?
NYRSince, take a look at the big picture and the fact that one of the youngest teams in the league is also one of the best—was the best in the East last year—and this without any absolute first-round draft stud on the roster anywhere, or anything close.
Also, how those young guys run through walls for him. Don’t use Gilroy as an example. Tortorella was largely responsible for him signing with NYR originally, he left on his own, and then he decided to come back. And he’s also probably barely good enough to be a top six on a good team.
why not wait to see how the young players develop before deciding the coach has derailed that development? And Gilroy’s also not that young.
I would have to politely disagree when it comes to Del Zotto. As for McDonagh and Callahan, they have always seemed much more confident and mature. I’m not saying every young talent he deals with turns out badly, just that his style with many young players is not productive to their development. And, as I noted above, Vincent Lecavlier agrees.
Fair points, Carp. Although I would disagree that there are “no absolute first-round draft studs on the roster anywhere, or anything close,” when you consider McDonagh.
Too lazy to look it up, but there are multiple sources where VL admits that he became the player he is because of Tortorella.
Agree completely Carp… Another thing to consider NYRsince72, Gilroy was not a youngster when he graduated college. I’m not sure exactly how old Gilroy was in his first season under Torts, but Gilroy is going to be 29 years old this off season.
It boggles my mind how some ranger fans don’t like tortarella. I’m sure they rather have renney.
No Girardi in warmups.
A pretty crude and quick evaluation, but I’d suggest the following summary of prospect/young(ish) player development under Tortorella’s tenure:
Positive
McDonagh
Sauer
Del Zotto
Girardi
Boyle
Neutral (being harsh)
Stepan
Hagelin
Dubinsky
Anisimov
Negative
Gilroy
Zuccarello
Grachev?
Sanguinetti?
Parenteau
Not drawing any conclusions on Kreider or anyone else who has barely played. Tough to make a case that any in the bottom group have ended up being cataclysmic examples of poor development.
I meant, the Rangers haven’t had any stud No. 1 picks when you’re talking about their young players they’ve developed.
Maintenance warm-up for Girardi-er?
Carp, what do you mean no Girardi? Are you trying to give local cardiologists extra work?
I’m not saying I don’t like Tortorella, merely that I take issue with much of the praise heaped upon him with regard to young players. I certainly wouldn’t want Renney. That being said, the overuse of two forward lines and select defensemen results in a wearing down of those players, such that the Rangers had a tough time getting through the first two rounds last year and lost to a less talented, but more balanced team that ran four lines effectively. I like Tortorella’s energy and passion and believe he gets alot out of certain players who buy into his system. I just worry that a system that requires as much shot blocking and incredibly imbalanced TOI numbers will not be able to physically withstand what is needed to win the Stanley Cup.
OH Boy!! looks like Girardi block a shot in the tampa game, appear to be a scratched.
“He was very tough on young players. His emotions sometimes made it difficult. I’m not saying that in a bad way That’s the type of coach he is. He is very aggressive, very emotional and very into the game.”
Referencing an article with Lecavalier saying the above isn’t especially supportive of the argument either…
NYRsince72,
your right but that is what happens when you lose your 2nd and 3rd line players either through trade or free agency. I’m sure as the season goes on sather will find a way to make our 3rd and 4th lines better, either through trades or waiver wire.
new post.
I do like the addition by subtraction with regard to the Rupp move and think that, by all accounts, Powe is the type of player Tortorella will like, i.e. shot blocking, puck posession forward. Also, from what I saw of JT Miller during the World Championships, he appears to be defensively responsible, which should go a long way to putting him in the coach’s good graces.
This really answered my challenge, thank you!
