Penguins at Rangers.

Ya boys, winners in three of their last four, finish a three-game homestand in a rematch of a bad home-opener loss.

They play their first without injured captain Ryan Callahan.

Stu Bickel moves up to forward, Mike Rupp moves up to the third line and Taylor Pyatt plays in Callahan’s spot in the second line.

Matt Gilroy makes his season debut on defense. Chris Kreider (bone chip, ankle) remains out. Steve Eminger is prucha’d.

Henrik Lundqvist starts his seventh consecutive game in goal.

  1. Carp
    listened to
    but
    couldn’t understand
    Tort’s answer
    in regards to Gilroy
    playing forward or defenseman.
    what did he say?
    and
why doesn’t he put Gilroy on wing?
i would think his speed would be
more of a plus than Bickel at forward.

  2. IBleedRangersBlue on

I think its funny people r voting for the players of the game….before the game is even starting

  3. jpg, his answer was kind of … I might use him as forward, or I might use him on defense … but I’m guessing that A) Gilroy has played very little forward in his pro career (and not very well, from what I remember) and B) Bickel doesn’t have the foot speed to play against Pitt.

the rangers may not score if the pens have no players on the ice

the stepan 25 mph slapper was quite a play also.

    ugly ugly ugly.

I realize Columbus had about 10 fans per game making the arena basically silent so in comparison MSG must sound like a heavy metal concert to Nash but loud is not one of the adjectives I would describe the crowd tonight.

  29. Czechthemout!!! on

You know you are in trouble when Mike Rupp is your best forward in the first period.

Fyi= Mike Rupp was a first round draft pick of the Islanders but did not sign with them. He was than drafted in the third round.

  31. watch the game on nhl network.. the crawler at the bottom of the screen is often where the puck is so you cannot see it..

gilroy played fine, the stud forwards have done so much on the forecheck and getting pucks to the net.

don’t worry torts favorite the great bickell is playing tonight. he could not score if he was the only guy on the ice…

  32. Id love to hear arguments defending Stepan’s play the past 30 games. No really, please. I still remember the first line center projections during the playoffs. Mr. Untouchable.

Hard to be loud in a game when there is nothing to cheer for and Mike Rupp is your best player in the period.

  34. Youre playing one of the best teams in the league and a pretty big rival i think that’s reason enough to at least have some noise.

  35. I can’t really think of many places that do noise anymore other than Winnipeg and Montreal.

  38. Just want to point out that although Boyle and Stepan (and Hagelin) haven’t scored they are playing great games.

What do you guys think Hagelin heard? The coach call his move “dumbness” or the fact that he’s getting trusted on PP tonight?

  39. Olga Folkyerself on

If they just made the Rangers play permanently one man down, the refs wouldn’t have to call a penalty every two minutes.

  40. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Are these still exhibition games? When does the season start? Are the real refs on strike?

  41. They were standing in one spot passing the puck to one another. Only impressive thing about that was that most of the passes connected, a stark contrast from a few games ago.

  42. This may be the most boring game of the year so far. Actually past couple of games have been very boring due to whistles every 30 seconds.

  43. Czechthemout!!! on

Its amazing that Torts cant make any adjustment at all to generate some offense.

Stepan needs a good thorough benching.

  44. How is this possible? When Tom Renney was coach too many men on the ice was on him every single time. We’ve been getting one now every other game it seems and everyone is ignoring it.

  45. I swear to God Pitts easily gets the most calls out of any team. I think I am going to start putting some research together, but it seems like every fan says the same thing. Granted, the Rangers deserved that too many men.

  46. Yeah Carp…I was supposed to be at the game but something went down and couldn’t make it to the game…instead I am home in pain typing with one hand :)

  47. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

Wish dubi stayed and Stepan was traded. He absolutely sucks.

  48. Gilroy limited but fine, Hank good, same for Staal, Danny McMonster Hags, everyone else invisible

  49. Somebody needs to drop an anvil on Skidney’s head, a la the Road Runner cartoons….

  50. step nice pass to skid before.

hagelin 0 points step 1 ass. quality 2nd line players but the sad thing is they have to be because below them is nothing

  51. Where’s the Magic!? It’s in Montreal. Wearing #8. Getting overpaid. If that wasn’t clear enough….the “magic” left with Brandon Prust. Now we have talent.

  52. rangers have about 3 shots with someone in front of the net. making vacuum seem great because the concept of shooting and getting traffic to the net is new to the rangers. looking for the perfet pass that happens about 7 times a season, shrewd.

i especially like the smart play, no errors like having too many men on the ice for the 4th time on the season.

all is well we have tough guy rupp and bickell in the lineup… that really helps… gilroy should play on the blueline permanately over bickell… just watch the first 2 periods…

i like the mdz hooking that was shrewd.. hagelin and stepan are killing them they need them to score on occassion.

i know rupp is better then kreider..send kredier down the rangers already have to much scoring no need for any more…..

  53. Don’t complain about the refs tonite on fairness, granted they suck, but it’s for both. Cosby got away with bumping HL but the too many men was stupid bad, Duprius didn’t deserve his and MDZ with a real bad hookin the offensive end. Simply put the ice sucks, refs suck and these teams suck TONITE. Unless you like the whistles… Oh yea the announcers suck too. Fun Hun?

  54. yep if they had prust they would have about the 9th forward who cannot score.

gaborik has 5 goals on the season but when he is bad he is real bad. tonight he rather be at dinner and a movie…..

  55. Stranger Nation on

last year we didnt score much either but we got to watch Prust wrestle with heavy weights…yawn

    all these guys are lollygagging

  56. the pens do suck, that is the only chance the rangers offensive juggernaut has…

rupp and bickell will light the lamp in the 3rd period, or hands asham….

  57. someone call sykora langkow rolston maybe they all could play for 700k replace crap on 3rd and 4th line

  58. the stepan hate crew always need someone to whine about. whining about rupp, bickell, asham, 3 guys who really stink is not sufficient they rather whine about a 23 yr old with 4 points who tries to make plays…

they like bickell or rupp with the meaningless staged fight crap or they like slow motion hockey..

  59. Stepan’s Ranger days are numbered. But unfortunately his trade value gets lower with each shift he takes.

  60. ZzZz NASH ZzZz " plz no Crosby updates!!!" ...says Greg L. on

Rupp, Assham suck really bad. Only Rangers I dislike.

GO RANGERS!!!! LETS GO GO GO GO GO!!!!!

  61. Well put, Stuart. Quit whining about Stepan. Kid looks good tonight. Playing BIG.

Also, you guys that think Prust was just some fighter we could rally behind might be better off just watching UFC.

  62. If we could put men on the moon 44 years ago, whey can’t some Wernher von Braun ice cube theorist figure out how to fix the ice at MSG? And I don’t care if they’re on the 5th floor.

  63. listen i wont EVER complain about stepan work ethic he tries. To me he is not getting any better offensively his faceoffs are awful and so far this year I am not impressed defensively.

we cant baby him anymore he needs to produce consistently on the scoresheet for this team to go places

  64. No really I appreciate Stepan making plays. Id appreciate it even more if it was for our own team. Id rather he play like he did in the playoffs (invisible) than the way he is playing to start the year.

I will say this: Last year in games like this the team would get physical and just outwork the other team and come back and win the game or at least show “heart”. We never had the feeling that the game was over in the 2nd period when we were down. Ive said this many times I dont think we’re less of a physical team this year, in fact we have added 1 player that has fought before. We just havent seen them become physical and that is concerning.

  65. Tort is trying to spread the ice time more evenly by giving each player few shifts as the sixth skater on the ice each game. Quit complaining.

  66. Olga Folkyerself on

Rangers have the most 20+ minute players? That explains the too many men on ice penalties.

  67. Stepan has 4 points…. Who cares? If you think he’s playing well I’d like to know who it is your comparing him to.

  68. I get it, we’re losing this game because Mike Rupp and Arron Asham have played about 5 shifts each.

  69. game over…

play rupp, bickell, and some of the other skill guys the buffoons on this website like…

good game.. 3 shots max with traffic in fron of vacuum..

  70. How many too many men penalties is that this year? That’s on the coach. Referees have been fair, both teams have whined like the game is taking place in a daycare center.

  71. Hugo… If your watching on cable your paying too watch it. Unless you got a hot box or your watching your neighbors set through the window,,,

  72. Probably an outrageous suggestion, but there might be a tiny stretch of middle ground between “Stepan is playing well” and “Stepan is getting worse by the shift and his days are numbered”.

  73. E3 pimp's angel on

One good line on this team and 3 minor league lines. Rangers bottom 9 would be bottom nine in the AHL.

  74. I miss Jaromir. Even at 60 years old with both his arms in a sling and prosthetic legs, he’d help.

  75. E3 pimp's angel on

Latona – I think what Eric means is that stepan has an open net and fans on his shot….. Or goes to hit a slapper and it dribbles off his stick urine dribbling out of a clogged prostrate

  76. Well, last year’s team would be able to grind away and stay in the game. This team doesn’t have that grind and a lot of its second- and third-line players are looking like fourth-liners tonight.

  77. Just absolutely nothing going on with the Rangers tonight…pretty depressing considering this is a divisional opponent they clearly hate.

Isn’t it about time Rick Nash tries putting one in the net?

  78. Gravy, Bettman gets no on

True about the grit, but this team has the ability to turn it on and get a few quick ones.

  79. E3 pimp's angel on

Ricardo – and it isn’t like the rangers aren’t trying…. They just seem sorely lacking in skill.

  80. You think they could at least act like they wanted a goal? Based on the season thus far, I would say a 8th-10th place finish on the season.

  81. E3 pimp's angel on

Carp makes a great point. This ranger team cannot cycle, cannot grind, and isn’t good in the corners…..they really haven’t had a good down low cycle yet this year…. And they certainly don’t play that ugly grinding game anymore…it’s really sad….

  82. Gravy, Bettman gets no on

Seriously, they were a combined 3″ away from tying the game the last two minutes.

  83. Oh, cool, Tiki is doing the whole “if Henrik never gave up a goal ever the Rangers would be 82-0 (48-0)” thing. Within 5 minutes, I remember why I’ve been avoiding the game threads.

  84. Czechthemout!!! on

Oh, and you can Ferriero to that list. Today you see why he is an AHL player. Thats six forwards, half of the forwards who cannot play this game at an NHL level. Pathetic.

  85. maybe if they had the puck more and generated off they wouldnt have to take 6 7 minor pen a game with one too many men thrown in

  86. Czechthemout!!! on

And Boyle, another slow footed 4 liner. Thats seven, seven forwards who are at best 4th liners or AHL players.

  87. I still say we gave up way too much for Nash. So far it HAS NOT been worth it. I watched this guy for multiple seasons in Columbus and yeah when you play for an AHL team in the NHL and you are an NHL caliber player, you will look amazing.

  88. Fat Guy Duberstein on

Look at it this way – it could be worse, oh, wait, no it can’t

At least we were champions of the off season

  89. Definitely Nash’s worst game of the year. But he’s still been better than pretty much everyone from the forwards.

  90. Man shortage of manpower is really apparent tonight. they are going no where with this lineup.

  91. Olga Folkyerself on

“seven forwards who are at best 4th liners or AHL players.”

Can I get a FIRE SATHER?

  92. ThisYearsModel on

The thing that will always irritate me is the Rangers not standing up for one another. Skid ran Hank and no response again. Why did Skid not end up with someone’s stick protruding out of his ears?

  93. There were a ton of 3rd & 4th liners available in free agency and the rangers signed Asham and Halpern?

  94. The big line was broken up early tonight.

And agree. Asham can’t play at all. Halpern was kind of done in Washington. Maybe J.Mitch wasn’t so bad.

  95. Gravy, Bettman gets no on

In the end, they won’t be a bad team. But, it seems it’s possible to make the correct decision on every personnel move in the offseason and wind up with a team that’s not as consistently good.

  96. Wow, Bylsma just invented the strategy of having two centers on the ice for a faceoff as insurance. Some great innovations from the Penguins tonight.

  97. Fat Guy Duberstein on

Rangers looking up and down their schedule for the mark, and they can;t find it because they are now the mark

  98. prust feds and mitchell seemed like the good old days compared to this crap we have now.

i will leave dubi and arty out because nash deal i make any day of the week

  99. Stranger Nation on

    game summary

they looked tired, fatigued, with no chemistry, Nash sucks, Dubi is great, trade Step, demote Hags and cut Halpern

  100. Waiting for Torts to yell at some reporters, skip few questions and throw a player or two under the bus…and get a pass from most ppl on here for not having this team ready to play tonight.

  101. Ye any day you have the opportunity to trade 2 3rd liners and an AHLer for a Superstar (top 15 player in the league) it’s obviously not worth it.

But Stepan should be our #1 center.

  102. Sam……”when you’re team gets shutout that’s the best you can do” talking about Stralman hitting the post. Sam is having a bad start as well.

  103. After last year i feel like most of us started to like or at least respect Torts but again no one is going to dare question him about the continuous too many men on ice penalty.

Renney was run out of town and that was following public outcry about those penalties being his fault.

  104. This season is in no ways lost. But we have major issues. The PP sucks for lack of a better word. The offense is anemic to say the least. I still am not a Nash trade fan. He is decent but a team is more than one player (hence why Hank does not have a cup yet). I think we are one-two depth players short right now. Hopefully that can change.

  105. Asham/Halpern/Rupp are they really worth playing? We have Bickel if there’s a fight but no one seems to be fighting anymore or winning them to get the crowd going. All these others teams have adequate 4th lines. Do we need all these scrappers? We could use more of a Fedotenko who will block shots/kill penalties do the dirty work and not get beat badly defensively.

Is it worth it to get some young/fast/high energy kids in there on a 4th line. Didnt the Devils do that in the playoffs last year, albeit maybe they weren’t kids.

  106. Too many non contributors…if you’re not scoring you better be skating and forechecking
and trying to make things happen. Jam and work ethic not there in the offensive zone….other team’s defense not being pounded or pressured.

Right now…not hard to play against. Until there is more of a sustained effort for 3 periods wins are gonna be hard to come by.

  107. Czechthemout!!! on

Despite outscoring any of our lines last year in the series, we were told that the Devils 4th line wasnt that great.

  108. Definitely don’t need Rupp, Asham and Bickel all in the lineup at the same time

You’re bench is shortened before the game even starts.

  109. Things keep going as they have been, and we might have a big problem finishing ahead of the fishsticks in our division….

  110. Jshim… Those high energy types were available and could have been had relatively on the cheap in the summer.

  111. NHL network talking heads keep calling the Rangers a powerhouse and high powered offense, etc. Continuing to blow smoke up their aasens.

  112. Jimbo – right now the Fishsticks are more entertaining to watch than our boys. Frankly, we’re playing quite boring hockey, especially compared to last year.

  113. Rick Carpiniello February 23rd, 2009 at 11:54 am

    Kaspar, please don’t jump.

Re: too many men, there are a lot of people responsible, but ultimately it is the players who have to be aware who’s going on, when, and for whom. And if the players continue to mess it up, then the coach has to hold them accountable.

  114. Gilroy played better than I expected. Pitts. are not a bad team despite their record, but man the Rangers looked real bad at times. The problem is there is no one out there that they can pick up that would make much differance. They got guys that should be playing a lot better, but they are short good help Krieder’s almost ready, but I wouldn’t expect much help from him. It would be great if he just suddenly just got it and became the player he should be. It would be great if anyone just stepped up. One thing they can do for sure that would help a lot, is stop taking so many stupid penaltys.

  115. It’s alarming to me that some of these guys looked so disinterested.
Maybe it’s not about the guys we lost as far as the on ice productivity but more so the character and the bond they all had on and off the ice. That’s ultimately what makes a team mesh and play for each other every night.
Really obvious how much (little) we’re gonna get out of Halpern Asham and Rupp this year.
To cliche quote Herb Brooks I guess it’s about the right guys not the best. Just like its about having certain kinds of role players to create the energy the 3 &4 lines are supposed to create.

Right now forget the pp- there shouldn’t be ANY point in a game where these guys aren’t throwing everything at the net and moving their feet. As I said..going to make for an interesting Torts watch

  116. The alarming thing to me is the freaking juggling with the puck. Nobody can handle the damn thing, and don’t blame the ice. The penguins made crisp precise passes. How can I call these guys pro’s if they can’t even pass or recieve a puck.

  117. E3 pimp's angel on

Bring back the one man who could right this sinking ship – Phil Donahue … I mean John muckler.

  118. Wow…what a mess. I gotta say, lots of disappointing players so far, but for me leading the way is Brad Richards.

He is wearing an A, makes a ton of dough, is the number 1 center, but is invisible….

Get it together dude. And soon……………

  119. They let guys go that would not have been big cap hits, that are playing well for other teams. Feds, and John Mitchel both are effective players. Not going to score much, but they can play against anybody. They both played a major part in the Rangers season last year. So they dump those guys and pick up Asham and Halpern. Asham will fight but he’s a poor excuse for a player. As far as the Nash trade goes, Sather had to make that trade. Duby was a big cap hit that was not producing, and Artie well, he was a pretty good player that was just part of the trade. I think Erixon will turn into the best part of that deal for Columbus. He’s small but he is talented player , with a good hockey IQ.

  120. E3 pimp's angel on

It’s tough envisioning finishing outside of top 8, but I can’t see this team making a deep run once the playoffs start. Something just isn’t right. Rick Nash, McD, and MDZ, and Pyatt’s 3 goals have been good – not so much anybody else.

Hags and stepan are on pace to score fewer goals in 48 games combined than wade redden has scored in 3 – that is mind boggling.

  121. E3 pimp's angel on

Remember how well the rangers played down low last year? Grind grind grind – ugly goals resulting from hard work – this year – it ain’t happening – their identity has changed but they don’t have the flash and dash to score like a run and gun team….

  122. E3 pimp's angel on

Mister D – the first pen goal was putrid. Hank needs to stop that – that was like friggen Apollo 13 skipping off earth’s atmosphere upon re entry.

  123. So Carp was right. The “replaceable” third and fourth liners they let walk (Prust, Feds, Mitchell) were guys who cared alot about the sweater and that is not something that is replaceable.

Team is easy to play against. ALready they have played 3 games this year that last year’s team would never have turned in.

  124. Very few teams would play Stu Bickel as a top six defenseman in the league, never mind the ridiculous notion of him as a forward. Dress someone you trust and play them, idiot.

  125. Right Wing Three on

@It’s alarming to me that some of these guys looked so disinterested.@ Not trying

  127. Quick word on Hags btw…He has deadly speed and some really solid talent..but if he doesnt learn to put the puck on net more he’s not going to amount to much

  128. E3 pimp's angel on

Peter – good point – especially against rangers’ pp – just have 4 players with a pulse and a goalie who can stand without falling down and it’s a penalty kill…. Team has really regressed this year. Looking like those Nedved/ Dvorak teams of utter futility. Soft and incapable of winning battles.

  129. I don’t know how anyone can argue with the Nash trade, regardless of how it pans out. It was a move the organization needed to make at the time, and the price was better than we could have dreamt. Sure, Dubinsky and Anisimov are missed on the lower lines, but Nash is a superior player in most every way.

  130. I don’t know if it would be possible, but I think acquiring someone like Dan Cleary could be really beneficial to this team as currently constructed.

  131. I don’t know why both of my posts began with I don’t know. And I don’t know how I got a hat trick.
