They play their first without injured captain Ryan Callahan.
Stu Bickel moves up to forward, Mike Rupp moves up to the third line and Taylor Pyatt plays in Callahan’s spot in the second line.
Matt Gilroy makes his season debut on defense. Chris Kreider (bone chip, ankle) remains out. Steve Eminger is prucha’d.
Henrik Lundqvist starts his seventh consecutive game in goal.

all is well we have tough guy rupp and bickell in the lineup… that really helps… gilroy should play on the blueline permanately over bickell… just watch the first 2 periods…

No really I appreciate Stepan making plays. Id appreciate it even more if it was for our own team. Id rather he play like he did in the playoffs (invisible) than the way he is playing to start the year.
I will say this: Last year in games like this the team would get physical and just outwork the other team and come back and win the game or at least show “heart”. We never had the feeling that the game was over in the 2nd period when we were down. Ive said this many times I dont think we’re less of a physical team this year, in fact we have added 1 player that has fought before. We just havent seen them become physical and that is concerning.
Tort is trying to spread the ice time more evenly by giving each player few shifts as the sixth skater on the ice each game. Quit complaining.

Well, last year’s team would be able to grind away and stay in the game. This team doesn’t have that grind and a lot of its second- and third-line players are looking like fourth-liners tonight.

I still say we gave up way too much for Nash. So far it HAS NOT been worth it. I watched this guy for multiple seasons in Columbus and yeah when you play for an AHL team in the NHL and you are an NHL caliber player, you will look amazing.

After last year i feel like most of us started to like or at least respect Torts but again no one is going to dare question him about the continuous too many men on ice penalty.
Renney was run out of town and that was following public outcry about those penalties being his fault.
This season is in no ways lost. But we have major issues. The PP sucks for lack of a better word. The offense is anemic to say the least. I still am not a Nash trade fan. He is decent but a team is more than one player (hence why Hank does not have a cup yet). I think we are one-two depth players short right now. Hopefully that can change.
Leafs 2pts, pens 2, buff 2, fish sticks 2, devs1 ….. NYR zero goodnite folks
Asham/Halpern/Rupp are they really worth playing? We have Bickel if there’s a fight but no one seems to be fighting anymore or winning them to get the crowd going. All these others teams have adequate 4th lines. Do we need all these scrappers? We could use more of a Fedotenko who will block shots/kill penalties do the dirty work and not get beat badly defensively.
Is it worth it to get some young/fast/high energy kids in there on a 4th line. Didnt the Devils do that in the playoffs last year, albeit maybe they weren’t kids.

Re: too many men, there are a lot of people responsible, but ultimately it is the players who have to be aware who’s going on, when, and for whom. And if the players continue to mess it up, then the coach has to hold them accountable.
Gilroy played better than I expected. Pitts. are not a bad team despite their record, but man the Rangers looked real bad at times. The problem is there is no one out there that they can pick up that would make much differance. They got guys that should be playing a lot better, but they are short good help Krieder’s almost ready, but I wouldn’t expect much help from him. It would be great if he just suddenly just got it and became the player he should be. It would be great if anyone just stepped up. One thing they can do for sure that would help a lot, is stop taking so many stupid penaltys.

Maybe it’s not about the guys we lost as far as the on ice productivity but more so the character and the bond they all had on and off the ice. That’s ultimately what makes a team mesh and play for each other every night.
Really obvious how much (little) we’re gonna get out of Halpern Asham and Rupp this year.
To cliche quote Herb Brooks I guess it’s about the right guys not the best. Just like its about having certain kinds of role players to create the energy the 3 &4 lines are supposed to create.

They let guys go that would not have been big cap hits, that are playing well for other teams. Feds, and John Mitchel both are effective players. Not going to score much, but they can play against anybody. They both played a major part in the Rangers season last year. So they dump those guys and pick up Asham and Halpern. Asham will fight but he’s a poor excuse for a player. As far as the Nash trade goes, Sather had to make that trade. Duby was a big cap hit that was not producing, and Artie well, he was a pretty good player that was just part of the trade. I think Erixon will turn into the best part of that deal for Columbus. He’s small but he is talented player , with a good hockey IQ.

It’s tough envisioning finishing outside of top 8, but I can’t see this team making a deep run once the playoffs start. Something just isn’t right. Rick Nash, McD, and MDZ, and Pyatt’s 3 goals have been good – not so much anybody else.
Hags and stepan are on pace to score fewer goals in 48 games combined than wade redden has scored in 3 – that is mind boggling.

So Carp was right. The “replaceable” third and fourth liners they let walk (Prust, Feds, Mitchell) were guys who cared alot about the sweater and that is not something that is replaceable.
Team is easy to play against. ALready they have played 3 games this year that last year’s team would never have turned in.

Peter – good point – especially against rangers’ pp – just have 4 players with a pulse and a goalie who can stand without falling down and it’s a penalty kill…. Team has really regressed this year. Looking like those Nedved/ Dvorak teams of utter futility. Soft and incapable of winning battles.
I don’t know how anyone can argue with the Nash trade, regardless of how it pans out. It was a move the organization needed to make at the time, and the price was better than we could have dreamt. Sure, Dubinsky and Anisimov are missed on the lower lines, but Nash is a superior player in most every way.
I don’t know if it would be possible, but I think acquiring someone like Dan Cleary could be really beneficial to this team as currently constructed.
