RANGERS ACQUIRE FORWARD BENN FERRIERO
Send Forward Chad Kolarik to Pittsburgh
NEW YORK, January 24, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired forward Benn Ferriero from Pittsburgh in exchange for forward Chad Kolarik.
Ferriero, 25, has registered four goals and 14 assists for 18 points, along with 14 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season. He ranks third on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in assists, is tied for fifth on the team in points and ranks second in shots on goal (97). The Boston, Massachusetts native tallied six assists in a seven-game span from October 19 at Springfield to November 2 at Manchester, and registered 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in a 10-game span from November 10 against Portland to December 7 against Hershey.
The 5-11, 195-pounder has skated in 155 career AHL contests over four seasons with the Worcester Sharks and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, registering 48 goals and 73 assists for 121 points, along with 68 penalty minutes. He established career-highs in games played (58), goals (19), assists (31), points (50), shots on goal (164) and penalty minutes (20) as a rookie during the 2009-10 season.
Originally selected by the Phoenix Coyotes as a seventh round choice (196th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Ferriero signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks on August 23, 2009. He has registered 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points in 92 career NHL contests over three seasons with San Jose. He established a career-high with seven goals in 35 games last season. He made his NHL debut with San Jose on October 1, 2009, at Colorado, and registered his first career point with a goal two days later at Anaheim. Ferriero has also notched one goal in eight career playoff contests with the Sharks.
Kolarik, 26, has registered 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points, along with 38 penalty minutes in 41 games with the Connecticut Whale (AHL) this season. The Abington, Pennsylvania native was acquired by the Rangers from Columbus in exchange for forward Dane Byers on November 11, 2010. He was originally selected by the Phoenix Coyotes as a seventh round choice (199th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Nothing more than another one of those “tweak” moves that never really amount to being of major substance. Kolarik wasn’t going to see time with the club and usually if they do something like this ( same positioned average size late 20s player swap) it means whoever we send packing isn’t someone Torts is high on thus they aren’t going to see time here even if our top 2 RWs are injured.
On another note- Taylor Pyatt has been a pleasant surprise thus far as far as I’m concerned. He’s Jeff Beukaboom big on the wing and has 2 goals in the first 3 games. thus far he looks like a good fit for this teams style of play and one of those guys most fans wll grow to enjoy having. Once they regain consciousness from that piece of sky that fell and hit them in the heads.

A native of Essex, MA, Ferreiro was a Boston Collge teammate of Rangers center Brian Boyle for two years.

The trade seems pretty sinister to me. I can visualize a scenario where kolaric request a trade based on what he perceives to be the depth chart for the big club. Slats says okay and trades him to the penguins and that basically buries him even further on the depth chart.

Carp…. As I mentioned here last night during the game, I disagree in your assessment there was improvement in Kreider’s play. He had several opportunities to hammer vulnerable Bruins but clearly failed to finish his check like an NHL player. I’m always concerned when I watch a player with his size and skating ability consistently turn away from or softly glide into contact with a vulnerable opponent. It’s early yes, but it appears he may not possess the mean gene in his game which would be a dang shame. Torts should sit him a couple and have him focus on watching how Callaghan plays the game then give him 5 games to step it up before banishing him to Hartford.
Paul, I actually think the Penguins would be an easier place for him to cut his teeth. They are always looking for skilled wingers to play with their top centers. When Pascal Dupuis is a winger for Crosby, you know you can improve there.

Happy for Chad Kolarik, after missing an entire season because of an injury. He came back and didn’t miss a beat. He was doing good things in Hartford, but with the injury and all he really didn’t get chance. Since his come back this season he has been playing the best he has ever played in Hartford. Hopefully he get another chance at the big league. He plays a bit soft though. I don’t know anything about Ferriero, but its a good bet he plays more physical than Kolarik.

As a clear thinking human being though, I think trading Revis is a very smart move.
Kay’s point is that Revis isn’t really that big with Jets fans and they’d be fine with losing him. La Greca, who is no MENSA candidate himself, tried to point out that he is at every Jets home game and sees how much love there is for Revis. Kay doesn’t buy it and thinks he’s not that big of a deal.
I’m a jet fan and as far as I’m concerned, trade revis, if not he will become a free agent after next year and the jets will get nothing for him.

unfortunately the Jets can’t franchise him because Revis and his angent negotiated to have the jets not be able to franchise him. It’s either Revis walks after next year or they get something for him.
I have a feeling tonight will be nasty, even though usually the ranger/flyer games are nasty anyway but the flyers are a wounded team and haven’t won a gane yet. The rangers better be mentally in this game or it could get ugly.
