Back to work … briefly

141

I’m taking a vacation from my vacation starting today, but I’ll be neck deep in work on my “other job” and not so much on hockey.

Tomorrow’s going to be kind of an interesting day, with the NHLPA supposedly bringing back its counter-proposal, which I am going to go ahead and assume is going to be nowhere near good enough to get a deal done. And in fact, I expect it will widen the chasm and create even more of an environment of adversity which will lead to the lockout on Sept. 15.

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. I doubt it.

*************************************************

Meanwhile, got my computer back from the geek, all systems go. Got to watch a lot of the PGA Championship, which was an eye-popping win by the kid Rory McIlroy, and another big, big week for the Europansies in general. Great stuff.

I go back to vacation next week and then again later on leading to the lockout. I have a few more guest blogs in the bank, and I’m expecting a few others. If anybody wants to volunteer to write one, please email me at rcarpini@lohud.com.

  1. Probably just shoot some hoops with my boys Bobby Sanguinetti, Reginald VelJohnson, and Steve Doocy. After hoops means Gray’s Papaya!

  2. If any of you are looking for inspiration: I have this quote from Steinbeck’s “Cannery Row”:

“there are two possible reactions to social ostracism—either a man emerges determined to be a better, purer, and kindlier or he goes bad, challenges the world and does even worse things.”

Getting it tattooed on my abs Friday and sending the photo to Torts.

    Night!

  3. @ avery :
The problem with the NHL is the NHLPA vs. the owners, we should all focus on ths issue, precisely because we all miss hockey already!!! The next season is shot, in my humble opininion, there are are some irreconcilable differences and we all will suffer because the neither side really cares about what we naively view as “sport” to entertain us. It really is “business” by the strongest definition.

  4. Oh, I forgot : Good morning Carp and Sally. The guest bloggers are good to break up the summer blah, to say the least. I, for one, remember Eddie G. and the unfortunate death of Terry Sawchuck, after I was admitted to the U.S.A.

  5. I cant sleep.

    I am a Steinbrenner-ite. I am a Yankee.

Did anyone know that Carmelo Anthony is one of 3 players to play for the previous 3 USA Olympic BBall teams, the Admiral and Lebron being the other two. Wow, thats some pretty good company for a guy -with no character and leadership-. While Rayray Allen complained that players should be paid for playing for their country. Talk about no character!

Im tired of salary caps and revenue sharing. I dont like luxury tax either, but I can deal w that. America is a capitalist nation, yet these sports institute socialist concepts like salary caps and revenue sharing. The idea is create parity, but all it does is create unfairness.

Mama met Linda Cohn on the plane ride to Sweden last year… she was going to the Rangers opener as a fan, not as an employee for ESPN. Shes a Giants fan but allows her son to be a Patriots fan. How does a parent allow this to happen? Thatd be like ilb letting his daughter be a Devils or Bruins fan.

I didnt want an NHL season originally, but because of Nash and the retirement of Tim Thomas, i actually am excited for the season.

Please dont sign w the patriots, Plaxico Burress. Or if u do, can u shoot Tom Brady instead of yourself this time? :)

Mama is going to boston on tuesday. Shes all excited and telling me her plans and then asks me to be excited for her…. then she says, “i forgot who im talking to, nevermind.” Lol. Maybe Mama can meet one of the 700 (Brian) Boyle siblings.

Tony has an important dr. Appt this morning. Good luck Tony!

What would ya doooooooooo for a Klondike bar?

I really like the Cherry Italian ices.

I wonder if everything is ok with Puck and his family….

  6. Oopsies, meant the only 3 players to win 3 career medals for USA bball.

    Where is everybody?

I cant wait to get up to NY again. I miss my sushi, miso soup and edimame.

Funny story, i go to this restauarant all the time in NY, Haiku, and sit at the bar when i go. So one day, im having a bad day, and have 3 bloody marys in about 20 minutes. Well, im so out of it by about 45 minutes, i decide to order 3 rolls, and i take a shot with the Boston roll. While im waiting for food, im discussing my disdain for boston w the guy next to me and the hot bartender. I get the rolls, and one of the rolls looks completely different than every other roll ive ever eaten. So i ask the bartender, which of these is the boston roll? She points to the one that looks different. Of course im not surprised bc theyve always gotta be different. 10 minutes go by and the guy next to me asks how the boston roll tasted. I tell him it predictably tasted like crap. So he says, “i think if it was called a New York roll, you would have said it tasted great”

  7. Im kind of bored. I think im gonna call up Mama, i wonder if she’ll be peeved to be woken up early. Hmmm…

  8. Been reading a lot of opinion this morning about the issue of revenue sharing and how its the major issue in the NHL, despite the fact that the owners would tell you its player salaries when they in fact are the ones who control the salaries.
I think one phrase summed it up “the owners would rather try and hammer the players to give up more money than they would engage in a fight with each other about what is fair to share”.
One thing that strikes me about this approach is Bettman will stand shoulder to shoulder with them in this fight because if he for one instant suggests that more revenue sharing between the big boys (Leafs, Habs, Rangers, Bruins) is required then he is admitting his expansion-era franchises are failing.

I hope Fehr makes this proposal public because it seems to me like the players are willing to concede somewhat on their percentage but only if the league does something with that money to tackle their failing franchises.

  9. Good morning, boneheads!

    Go to bad, Tiki!

Great article, Tomb. It summarizes what really is preventing the NHL from staying financially healthy. It does not address much of the other, non- HRR that could potentially make small market teams healthier, but it covers the main problem well. The clue is this- going deep into players’ pockets will not solve small market teams issue. More aggressive revenue share system will not be accepted by the representatives of big market teams. There is no way mr. Fehr is going to agree to another meaningful concession on players’ part. On the other hand, the league can not afford another lock out financially. It’ll be an interesting month starting with tomorrow NHLPA proposal. Fasten your seatbelts!

  10. One thing ill say about Carmelo is that as a Knicks fan I was looking forward to him having a big game yesterday and making a statement that he can in fact have a big game in the clutch. Well what I saw was him missing three after three and then getting a rebound and passing it to Durant who nailed three after three. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

  11. I don’t understand why hockey wouldn’t look at the NFL’s revenue sharing and try to model it’s plan after the NFL’s. Everybody in the NFL is profitable, even schlubs like the Browns. And, the competitive balance (parity) is so close that a team with 4 wins one year can possibly go to 10 wins the following year with some good personnel decisions.

  12. Good morning, Sally!

Well, Caramelo did have that big game against the Lilliputians. USA probably loses that game if he doesn’t keep hoisting up 3s.

  13. Good point, Carp. We can probably create infinite jobs with those taxes. Maybe people can be hired to polish the medals?

  14. Cross Check, with only a sliver of knowledge about the NFL/NFLPA CBA and revenue sharing, I think I can say that the reason the Browns are profitable is that the NFL takes in billions in TV money, whereas the NHL doesn’t, and in some years the NHL has even had to pay for its TV partner to televise games.

  15. CCC- there is a tremendous gap between what NFL generates (11B) and what NHL does ($3.3B). The biggest amount going into the sharing pot is from broadcast deals- $4B. NHL only has a $200M per year to show for.

  16. Manny – its $3+ billion, not mentioning other non-directly-related revenue with only a tiny fraction of that being TV money where the NHL gets over a 1/3 of its revenue from the telly box. I dont know why Bettman is determined to ruin it? Maybe just to save the egg on his face when the next sun-belt franchise goes under or relocates north?

  17. Sally, apparently newbear doesn’t like it when we say “good morning” or “good afternoon” … maybe we should stop?

    ;)

  18. We’ll see what he does in a full season under Woodson, Lev. He’s still got plenty of career left. The fun part about the USA BBall team was seeing how much love and respect all the guys have for Coach K and vice versa.

Does anyone agree with my take on salary caps/revenue sharing?

  19. Thanks to Mamas upcoming trip to u know where…. my dream last night involved walking into an LOlive Garden. They had live entertainment and all the patrons were singing Shipping up to Boston along with the performer, and then Larry Bird walked by my table. So i started pounding bloody marys… i was having a bad day in my dream.

  20. Wow, just read the article Richards tweeted – Bettman makes 8 million??? Somebody get me some smelling salts…

  21. Carp – I read that the taxes on a gold medal are $9,000 each.

Lot’s of good golf yesterday. What a great tournament, and even a better winner. Big fan of Rory!!!

  22. Owners cannot control themselves. I thought they were the smart guys, the job creators, the leaders of business?

They should probably not spend money they do not have, a novel concept. Do not pay Doan for 4 years if it is not a good business and performance move….

    Bettman is a clown..

  23. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

  24. Tomb – Great Article. By far one of the best I’ve read. Thanks for sharing.

Not an easy fix for the teams on the bottom. Outside of a change of address.

I’m amazed at how Phoenix Coyotes are one series away from the Stanley Cup finals, and are winning club. But they can’t find an owner, and why hasn’t Bettman put that team in a “Hockey Market”, it will forever be dying on the vine in Phoenix.

Stick tap to Dave Tippett (Fighting Sioux Alumni) on coaching this team to be a winner, in a losing market. With no help from Management or Bettman.

Carp – is there a solution to Phoenix’s Problems without moving the team?

  33. The underdog US basketball squadron’s clutch play and gritty triumph against such adversity certainly brought a tear to my eye. Will we ever see the like again?

  34. No, so long as you stay centered, avoid being foul and forward, keep your comments in-bounds, and guard your prejudices. Get the point? (Couldn’t resist taking a shot.) :-)

  35. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

Coos – I will pass your advice along – pick and roll at the right time is usually a slam dunk or at least a bounce pass away from a pump fake..

Of course, try to box out most of what I say..

  36. E3, I will credit you with a nice outlet pass and an assist while I call a quick time out.

  37. Coach K is one of the greatest sports legends and people ever.

I dont know about the rest of you, but i always admired Bobby Knight and his fire and passion to win. I really admire guys like that. He probably cost us a title or 2 in the 90s, but Michael Jordan’s desire to win will never be matched, i appreciate that, though i spent much of the 90s cursing him out.

  38. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

Coos – I will guard what you have to say no matter how technical it is…..of course, i type this as I drive in my lane trying not to be so cavalier…

  39. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

Bobby Knight once ate a player whole after a missed free throw which cost IU a game…

  40. Many of you probably wont remember this.. there was a Browns player I think named Orlando Brown. A referee Jeff Triplette threw a flag for a penalty and blinded Orlando. Orlando then threw down the referee and got suspended. Triplette essentially ended this guys career. I believe Orlando died in 2011 or 2012. So imo, Triplette killed this guy and i bet he has no sympathy whatsoever for the damage he caused another mans life.

  41. E3 – Don’t mean to steal your Thunder or to give you any Heat for your clever Nuggets, but you will never make the big Bucks by being a Maverick and getting all Grizzly. Hope this doesn’t Spur you on. Stay Melo, Kidd.

  42. If there is one thing that we have learned from the Tort Haters and Tort coaching style, it’s that you have to abuse your players to get above-average performance out of them.

  43. Manny, there all sorts of stories like that about Nick Saban, 3 time champion. One story has a player of his collapsing on the field from dehydration, and Saban steps right over the player on his way to the locker room without any concern for the players health.

Then theres Bill Belichick who has in the past sent players back into games when he knew they had concussions, and when they complained about not wanting to go back in, he threatened their spot on the team.

Theres a fine line between abuse, exhibiting the importance of winning above all else, and gaining the respect of your players and not losing that respect.

  44. What do Vince Lombardi, Bill Parcells, Bobby Knight, and Mike Kryzewsiki (Duke) have in common? All tough taskmasters, all West Point coaches/Assistant Coaches.

  45. Wow! Here I sense a clash of Literature Titans. As a humble scholar I’m all alert in anticipation…It is deeper than Schiller and higher then Shakespeare.

  46. Its not about above average performance. I think the entire Rangers team played to their capabilities last year, with the exception of a couple like Dubi that did not meet expectations. I think its about getting the maximum effort of the players.

  47. indeed Walter, Coach K’s mentor is Knight. And it’s spelled Krzyzewski. As a kid, i was a state spelling bee finalist. Lol

  48. Bet you three -to -one you wouldn’t have spelled Krzyzewski correctly when you were in that spelling bee. :-)

  49. Matter of fact, he himself was probably sixteen before he finally spelled his own name correctly.

  50. Speaking of coaches stepping over players, when I was in high school, an assistant coach literally and daily jumped from one prone player’s gut to the next (wearing rubber cleats) while we did crunches – and we thought little of it. Oh youth, oh beauty!

  51. Perfect. My jaw feels like new. Botox is the best thing thats ever happened to me. Of course ill occasionally have a bad jaw day when i have a stressful day like when i fly and i get all nervous and nautious. Or the time i was stuck next to the bostonian watching the celtics playoff game on the flight to arizona.

  52. Oops. I honestly dont know how to spell that word and i wasnt really thinking. Nausea i think is spelled that way so itd have to be spelled similar. Haha :)

Yes, Manny. Its temporary, a 4 month thing. If u have TMJ, it might work. Its no guarantee though.

  53. Nauseous is a very difficult word to spell. Maybe, much like Coach K, we should just call it, Coach N or something like that.

  54. Haha, Manny! Im an idiot, ok! I said i was a good speller as a kid. Sheesh. At least i didnt blame it on the iphone like ilb lol :)

  55. My bet for quickness of expression and diversity of thoughts, as well as a general knowledge is on prolific E3, but for quickness of carsillothrowing and sharp double ambiguity coos can be challenged only by the second coos.
So, I would not “cast pearls in front of the swine”…

  56. Why are you talking about nausea? Did someone mention NY Rangers lineup from 2000 or something?

  57. The botox isnt for vain purposes. But in complete honesty, i am vain in that i do care a lot about my appearance. My face is perfect and for me, it needs to be perfect. I use moisturizer, and anti aging cream to keep my face looking beeeautiful :)

  58. Don’t mean to Pierce your illusions or to Curry favor, 3C, but I must tell you that I moved a few Knights ago from my Bryant Park Stackhouse to a Shaq out West on a Hill with two backyard Rivers that I can Wade in. The Price was right and there’s a Duncan Donuts nearby where they have Drummond up business. I was in a Rush to get out, tired of being Stuckey in NY with the high price of Gasol-ine. My new Shaq has a Rose garden and comes with a Butler. Sorry I Canby giving out directions. I wish you World Peace.

  59. I knew coos, you’re lying and will ruin a hope that we will not see you at least till Christmas…

  64. When I was a kid, and even into my late twenties, my dad and uncles would ooh and ah and cringe at the big (football) hits. I always wondered what they were cringing at and what was the big deal. Now, not too many years later, I finally get it. As with tennis, each year the net seems to recede and grow higher. The old nine iron to the green at 140 has become an eight. Not fair!

  65. Too many people who hide under strange names like Walther and cooscoos…not brave enough to reveal true identity.

  67. Long summer? No problem…Rod, err, cooscoos will keep us amused with his unlimited insight knowledge. Right, Rod-ster?

  68. I thought I had hemorrhoids about a week ago! Turned out to be a Larry Bird that got stuck in the anus!

  76. you guys crack me up.

I see a lockout in our future, and I’m not even psychic.
