For more than two years? Doan’t do it

My take on Shane Doan, who reportedly visited the Rangers’ brass yesterday while in NYC anyway for NHL/NHLPA CBA war discussions:
I’ve always liked Doan as a player and still do. I think he would fit very, very nicely into the Rangers; into their identity, into their leadership group. He could play on their second line, no problem. He could theoretically play on their first line if they don’t make another major move.
Doan spoke with ESPN-NY’s Katie Strang yesterday. Click here for that story.
He would be a good get for them, for where they are and where they’re trying to go. I don’t have even the slightest doubt about that.
But there are rumors out there—and I believe that’s all they are, unless somebody’s smoking something whacky—that Doan has a four-year, $30 million offer somewhere. The Rangers shouldn’t go anywhere near those numbers. They should run away.
However, if they could get him for two years at say $6 million per, or even if they had to go a little higher in the first year, I think he’d be a great get.
That all said, I believe Doan’s priorities are A) to stay in Phoenix and B) to stay out West. And of course every free agent’s priority beyond that is to get every last nickel. I imagine Doan might be able to get more elsewhere, and the Rangers shouldn’t bribe him to come here.
Giving him anything more than two years would be bribery. Doan’t do it.
