For more than two years? Doan’t do it

121

My take on Shane Doan, who reportedly visited the Rangers’ brass yesterday while in NYC anyway for NHL/NHLPA CBA war discussions:

I’ve always liked Doan as a player and still do. I think he would fit very, very nicely into the Rangers; into their identity, into their leadership group. He could play on their second line, no problem. He could theoretically play on their first line if they don’t make another major move.

Doan spoke with ESPN-NY’s Katie Strang yesterday. Click here for that story.

He would be a good get for them, for where they are and where they’re trying to go. I don’t have even the slightest doubt about that.

But there are rumors out there — and I believe that’s all they are, unless somebody’s smoking something whacky — that Doan has a four-year, $30 million offer somewhere. The Rangers shouldn’t go anywhere near those numbers. They should run away.

However, if they could get him for two years at say $6 million per, or even if they had to go a little higher in the first year, I think he’d be a great get.

That all said, I believe Doan’s priorities are A) to stay in Phoenix and B) to stay out West. And of course every free agent’s priority beyond that is to get every last nickel. I imagine Doan might be able to get more elsewhere, and the Rangers shouldn’t bribe him to come here.

Giving him anything more than two years would be bribery. Doan’t do it.

  1. Ha! It’s been a while. Good morning, boneheads!

Doan’s contract is over 35. For 4 years, at any price it would be a bad move, let alone for more than $7M per. Two year contract is ok. However, he doesn’t solve their scoring issues.

  2. Agree 100%. Good for 2 years, anymore and I think you’d be worried about injury and what sort of drop off there might be and the over 35 contract. Plus we should be getting prospects coming through constantly so should be no need to sign a veteran long-term unless he’s a game changer, Doan is not.

  3. I think Doan will go wherever his wife tells him to.

But if quality of life is the main criteria, all Torts, Sully, & Schoney have to do is take him around Westchester, or the East End of Long Island. Or even Connecticut. Mrs. Doan will approve.

  4. …I still think that Semin on a two year deal ($10 mil) may be the best solution at this point. Pure scoring is what the NYR need. Give him a chance to redeem himself.

  5. Czechthemout!!! on

Doan is not a game changer. He is a much older version of what they already have in spades. He is not worth 6 million per year for two years. At his age, he can fall apart at any point during the season. Remember Grannyhan collapsed as a player midway through his second season at age 36.

I would rather give that spot to a young player like JT Miller. There will be trade opportunities that develop during and if there is a season.

    Ilb

How are those sleepless nights my man?

  6. And I would drafting an offer sheet to one PK Subban. After fleecing the Canadiens in the Gomez deal, they won’t be doing business with us anymore anyway.

    Screw Montreal.

Sign PK Subban to an offer sheet.

  7. If Doan would sign for 2 years he would be a great addition, even at 6m. How about 5 year deal at 6, 6, 3, 1, 1, brings cap hit to 3.4m per yr. Wink deal is he retires after yr 3. Not sure if anything about the over 35 rule prevents this structure but if this can be done it absolutely should.

  8. True Blue Mike (At least most of you can remember 1994) on

Apparently one of the victims in the Colorado Theater shooting was a sportswriter that was pretty involved in hockey with connections to Jesse Spector. Crazy

  9. Matteau! – That’s the beauty of the over-35 deal: His cap hit stays even after he retires. The only way to get Doan off the books after he signs it to put him on the LTIR, as far as I know. Look, I like Doan and I think he’d help, but not to the degree of what he’ll cost in terms of salary cap. Remember, McDonagh and Stepan, Hagelin and Anisimov to resign next year. And Sauer too, if he ever comes back. That could be more than $16 million worth of cap space right there, during a year when the Rangers have only $23 million before you factor in a Doan signing. The numbers don’t add up.

  10. Joekuh - Want some waffle with that board? on

im with kovie and cw. if dale hunter could get semin to play some semblance of d, why cant torts?

  11. Phil thanks for clarifying, then I take it back, don’t sign him to anything more than a straight up deal for 2 years, which I’m guessing he won’t do bc he will have better offers.

  12. semin on his way to carolina prob for 2 years and 10-12 mil. if weber goes to phil and pitt with there top end talent if the rangers roster stays the same we will not beat them in a best of seven. like this year we would need someone to knock them both off again. we are starving for goals where we get more i have no idea and no kreider cant do it alone

  13. Jokeuh/cw – Not sure you guys read what Matt Bradley had to say about former teammate Alex Semin, but it wasn’t exactly endearing. He started out by saying:

“We had some guys who didn’t show up in the playoffs, and I’ll leave them unnamed. I think our locker room was maybe a little bit too nonchalant, and guys weren’t disciplined the way they should have been. Those two things are big things.”

But there was one guy who he did want to name:

“I don’t mind saying Alexander Semin’s name, because he’s one guy who has so much talent, he could easily be the best player in the league, and just for whatever reason, just doesn’t care. When you’ve got a guy like that, you need him to be your best player, or one of your best players, and when he doesn’t show up, you almost get the sense that he wants to be back in Russia. That’s tough to win when you’ve got a guy like that who’s supposed to be your best player not being your best player, or one of your best players.”

Now I’m all for getting a 40-goal scorer for cash. But nothing Bradley said(and others later affirmed) have suggested Semin is a good fit for this team. In fact, he sounds like subtraction by addition, if I can coin that term. The Rangers may end up with 30 more pucks in the net. Is it worth them tampering with their team chemistry?

My answer is no. No to Semin. Let him screw up the Penguins and their cap.

  14. Any comparisons between Caps and Rangers locker rooms are silly at best. With Cally, Henrik and Torts running the team, Semin will have no choice. It is a steal in this overpriced market.

  15. everything I have read about Doan is he wants to stay in Phoenix and if not Phoenix than out west. I’ve also read there are offers on the table for Doan from a few western conference teams. I don’t think ranger fans need to worry if he will sign with the rangers. I’m confident Doan won’t sign with the rangers.

  16. I guess we have to root for Thornbjorn since he sounds the *most* like a New York Ranger.

  17. Career playoffs

    Player A (guts and chemistry) 47GP 12G 7A
    Player B (chemistry killer) 51GP 15G 19A

  18. iPuck and Gavel: get well Tony on

Carp, you said Carter was 10 foot pole Carter, but a Stanley Cup later, maybe Semin is worth a short term gamble.

  19. Semin is worth a gamble. I have zero problem with him getting 2 years at $10M overall if Doan is getting 4 years and $30M overall. I would take Semin out of those two.

    B = Semin.

  20. Semin would be fine at a year or two. I don’t have a problem with adding a 40 goal scorer….

Doan would be insanity for longer than a year….maybe if it was 2006….

    @Chemistry@ is *overrated*.

  21. Sign Doan for 4 years then trade him to Anaheim (because he wants to be on the west coast) for Bobby Ryan and a pen. Use the pen to sign Evander Kane to an offer sheet. Best offseason ever.

  22. Now *that* is a plan. Can we make sure the pen is a Fischer Space Pen though? They write underwater.

  23. _I wanted a chip ahoy_

Ha. You have to buy them as singles because you don’t have room to store a whole bag.

  24. Not only is Richards tweeting about golf again (less than 12 months after being beaten in the playoffs by a rival team), he just called it “the Open” rather than the John Deere Invitational British Golf Open Tournament in association with Chevy (presented by Chick-Fil-A) as Boom Boom correctly noted it should be called.

  25. In theory I’d like to see an offer sheet play for Subban- booming point shot. But hard to see Habs not matching.

  26. LW funny but seriously your obsession with that joke- perhaps you protest too much? It’s ok to admit you now realize those tweets were pretty lame.

  27. I think Torts and that room teach him the right way. But it’s academic bc I don’t see Habs not matching.

  28. Not sure if this has already been covered here but has anyone realized that on top of his general overall suckiness Arron Asham has serious concussion problems which caused him to miss 13 games in 2nd half of last season, and 21 games the season before?

  29. Ehhh, one year for Doan and nothing more, imo. He’s essentially Callahan, only 10 years older.

I still think that Sather is waiting to see how the dust settles after the CBA wars/lockout/whatnot. See if he cant pick up a really good player on the cheap from a team that has to dump salary for nothing.

  30. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

I’m not a fan of the doan signing personally, he is fine as a player, but doesn’t address the scoring as ILB and I have been saying. Good depth, but depth at 6 mil per?? I am not a fan of semin’s playing style at all, but he potentially helps the scoring problems much more than doan does.

If the caps lockerroom is the same as the rangers, then he might be a problem, if it isn’t then maybe he wouldn’t be as much of a problem…MAYBE

I honestly think if weber does end up i philly, we have to pull the trigger on ryan or nash, period!!

  31. I really love the Big Easy, Carp. What a swing. You’re right about putting. I think a lot of tall guys have trouble putting because they can’t get their eyes close enough to the ball. I am surprised he hasn’t switched to a belly putter to up his accuracy.

  32. Beta Blocker on

You don’t need your eyes close to the ball, you need your balls close to your eyes.

  35. Ralph = firetorts on

Carp, I signed in as Ralph & after bashing Torts a few times you added = firetorts to my name . yes its me

  36. still confused… are you the original firetorts, or do you use that because I was kiddingly calling you that?

  37. Ralph = firetorts on

Just using it after you kiddingly added it to my name . about 2 weeks ago or so . I’m going to go bck to just Ralph . I didn’t know there was an original firetorts

  38. how was the dude already in a phd neuroscience program at 24? did he start college very young or did he go to some b.s. school?

  39. Posted this yesterday and seems to be the consensus around here, except for maybe the bit on Semin. Whether or not Semin would be a good signing seems to be about 50-50.
    ===============
Signing Doan would not be a great move for the Rangers. They have a Shane Doan. His name is Ryan Callahan. In fact, I would say they have a potential Shane Doan in Brandon Dubinski. Doan is not what the team needs. Sure, he’s a good player, but he’ll be 36 and he’ll get a big contract that’ll last until he’s at least 40. This will be Chris Drury 2.0 or worse.

If they are going to trade or sign a FA they need a scorer. Parise was really the only one available in free agency. Well, Semin is, but we all know that Torts would end up strangling him. So, Ryan and Nash are available, but they will cost assets.

I don’t know. Maybe it’s time to say go with what they’ve got and hope one of the prospects surprises.

  40. Call me crazy but I’m staring to think we should just forget about the whole Nash\Ryan thing. I don’t think the following things are out of the question:
    – Dubinsky has a bounce back year and scores 20-25
    -The Krieder scores 20
-AA finally gets it together and scores 20

Neither Nash or Ryan are going to score 60 and neither is worth what their teams are reportedly asking for them

    Thoughts?

  41. God forbid they sign a “jammer” like Doan who fits perfectly.

There were teams playing on the other side of the Mississippi, that were worth watching.

  42. JJK, from all the rumors that I have read it appears that Howson wants more goals going his way as he has leaving. When you say give them Dubi, Anisimov, and more for Nash. Well, individually they are not as good as Nash, but what about collectively? Even last year with Dubi’s rotten season they are giving up 27 goals up front to Nash’s 31.

Reportedly, Columbus wanted Jeff Skinner from Carolina for Nash. It’s no wonder that the Canes dropped out. Why would they want to give up a guy that scores just as much as Nash? Just keep Skinner.

If I was Columbus I’d try to get a really good defenseman or a goalie for Nash (especially a goalie). Of course, the Rangers wouldn’t be involved in that one unless they want to take Biron, but maybe a Luongo for Nash deal isn’t too crazy.

  43. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

of course if I am nashville, I match it and then trade him to the flyers for a package of pics and players that I want. They do the trade if they want him bad enough!

  44. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

pics lol…here is a shot of olivia munn brich gave us, here are a few avery left behind, a couple form (we don’t want to know where) in moscow from AA…

I meant PICKS, not pics….to much modern media in my life I guess

  45. But Nash will score 92 goals if he has a change of scenery. It’s all Columbus’s fault.

  46. I actually think The Krieder will score 30+ but I’m trying to manage my expectations

  47. If you would give doan 6 mill then your dumb he deservea if anything 4 he hasnt proven hes an elite acorer just a good 2 way player good for 3rd 4th line not first or aecond i would get nash firat if u still got the room then u offer him 4 yrs 16mill and the rangrs i gurantee win back to back cups if we just get doan were in same position we are now with 1 elite scorer and no helpfor him

  48. wasthathingwritteninamorsecodeifyougivea35yrold4yrcontractyoudontknowyourgluteusfromyourelbow.

My daughter *IS NOT* reading this blog because she’ll never know the difference between your/you’re/they’re/their/there.

  49. Kreider is not scoring 30 goals just stop thinking that he wnt break 20 he will get 15 tops if he was as good as u said then he would of had a goal a game he will become very good but he wnt break 30 till 3rd or 4th yr when hea fully developed and uses his size and skill the way he would be completely dominant until he learns to play nhl hockwy and not college hockey thats wen hia tru skills will bloom into a dominant hockey gorce nothing against him but he has to develope still just like cally mcdonaugh stall all of our players have been developed befor being thrownbinto playoffs were different people were suspended and hurt otherwise you wouldbt of seen him givem a couple years to develope and hell blow ur expectations out of the water

  50. No on my phone at work were i do construction for my company something you wish you had

  51. Nash is the help the rangers need kreider dubi and aa will not tpuch nash he is elite and dominant youll see when he comes here hpw wrong about kreider pickin up slack for gabby and bwcomin other scorer not for a couple years and he would never do what nash did on such a horrible team his whole career

  52. Keep going, buddy. Time to burp her anyway. Except this time I’m asking my wife to burp me.

speaking of to……if you lived on 22 Twain, it would be too too twain (get it)

  55. Doan and Nash would be great. For one season. Then when the Rangers cannot re-sign any of the RFA’s and UFA’s over the next few seasons, Doan and Nash won’t look so good playing with Jason Krog and Kris Newburry.

  56. Also, I have to say, I believe The Kreider will score 30 or more this season. Last time I felt this excited about a Rangers’ rookie was Mr. Leetch.

  57. My early prediction is that there will be a season, but it won’t start until November or December … just in time for Gaborik to be ready.

  58. Paul in sunrise on

I actually think the season starts early November.

Kreider and 22 goals in 70 games

Gabby and 34 goals in 60 games

Step and 53 points in 70 games

BRich and 67 points in 70 games

Rangers win cup in 22 games

  59. *Fatigue!*

Would be interesting to see how mr Brooks structures his Slap Shots tomorrow. No doubt, it’ll be all over the NHL proposal again. What is also interesting, is that the email allegedly sent to NHLPA members by Fehr after they got all the necessary information regarding that proposal, describes the proposed picture from a worst possible angle. And yet, it sounds in a very matter-of-fact manner.

  60. If I were the President of Boston College, I’d sue the Rangers for costing them multiple championships by grabbing Leetch and Kreider early from their hockey cribs. :-) (Just got in and figured I could be the last post of the old blog of the new day!)

  61. I am expecting a deal by Glenn in the early afternoon today, it has to happen like that because of the “boneheads” b’days and new births, just to say “thank you for your patience”.
The Manny tried to steer y’all toward golf which is more akin to speed of an average mind of a frozen puck = no success there. The anal-ists still rule with the poppycock about the CAP, various union rules and they reveal themselves in the process as lawyers, formerly Dungeons and Dragons community organizers. Odious…..

  62. Newbear-I’ve been trying to figure out what your problem was for months after reading your -late-night-so-no-one-can-tell-me-what-a-schmuck-I-am cowardly entries. Still not sure, but I’m getting closer. One thing is obvious-my newborn daughter alreay knows about hockey more than you do since she has a NYR onesie.
But the other issue is becoming more apparent- someone totally removed your sense of humor. Must be a medical neglect of sort. I’d rather they remove my kidney. I’ll be on the new thread if you want to discuss more. Cheers.
