(Editor’s note: I had to edit some things out of this guest post … not for any particular reason other than I didn’t completely understand where they were going. I normally wouldn’t point out such edits, but you guys familiar with our friend e3 know what I mean.)

First, a big shout out to Tony, THE PIMP, Tomb, and MickeyM’s dad as they continue to recover. Be strong my bruthas…Never Surrender and know that you are all in my prayers. Also, let’s hope everything goes perfectly for mommas doodie and Ilb as they move closer to delivery. Second, a big thanks to my brutha Carputha for allowing me fill this space. Third, to the poster known as “Guest Bloggers Stink” — go byfugle yourself.

The owners have put forth their first draft of a new agreement. Generous to a fault, I imagine their offer will be unanimously accepted by the players union.  What’s not to like?  The owners are merely asking for massive give backs such as cutting the players percentage from 57 to 46 percent. Additionally, the owners want to recalculate the definition of the related revenue pot thereby cutting the players’ pool of dollars even further. The players make enough money as it is.  And let’s face it. It’s just part of the national trend for upper management to give themselves ridiculous pay raises based on their “contribution” to the bottom line. It’s simply good economics to reward those that are the most inept  … I mean adept, at making the business decisions.

The owners are also pushing for 10 years of player service instead of today’s seven before UFA status is granted.  Geez, the owners are not saying infinity!!  It’s not like hockey is a physical and demanding game. The average NHL player’s career is what? Less than 10 years? Oh wait … never mind.  But if Katie Holmes can stay married to Tom Cruise for five years, surely an NHL player can wait 10 before filing for UFA.  (Oh wait, Katie Holmes reportedly got 3.2 million per year of marriage to …)

Back on earth, what I hope happens is that there IS a lockout lasting until mid-January. Here are the top 10 reasons why:

1. If the players are going to be paid less, might as well play less;

2. Dubi will have extra time to seek a sports psychologist so that he can get back to being the next John LeClair;

3. Gabby will return not having missed a single game;

4. The Rangers’ players will be fresher come playoff time having played fewer games;

5. More time off means that Hank will be well rested come playoffs;

6. It will give Avery and Torts extra time to bury their hatchet, and kiss and make up. Then Avery can re-sign and play on the first line;

7. Captain Cally’s wrist/hand, Dubi’s foot/ankle and Rupp’s hand and knee will have more time to fully heal. While Rupper will never be confused with Hags or THE KREIDER, he seemed to really labor last season and I think he was hurt;

8. Brian Boyle’s, Marc Staal’s and Michael Sauer’s noodles all could use more time to heal, especially Sauer Power.  Given a lockout, Sauer won’t feel forced to rush back;

9. Torts’ codependency on a small number of players to play the entire game can continue, thereby alleviating him from the tiresome chore of developing the rest of the talent on the team, especially come playoffs; The NYR could roll four defenseman in a shortened season. McD and Danny G could play 30 minutes per game with MDZ and Stahl playing the other 30. In fact, in a few games McD and Girardi could play  the entire 60… both showed they can handle 50+ minutes if needed;

10. The NHL channel could turn all that dead air time into the JR Show – treating us all to more of the greatest comedy on TV today.

In related news, do not trade the farm for Nick Rash. This team had a great season last year. Give them at least one more season before we trade everyone. Stepan, McD, MDZ, THE KREIDER, Hags, Stall, Girardi, Dubi, AA, Cally, and Boyle are all young and will get better … let them get better together … There are players in the pipeline that could be dangled at the trade deadline if the Rangers are to be buyers … Conversely, if these pipeline players prove to be NHL ready sooner than later, then perhaps think about trading some of the current roster at the deadline. But, let’s see what happens first.

Las Vegas has posted its odds to win the 2013 Stanley Cup. The Penguins are the favorites at 6-1. The Kings are next at 11-1. A glut at 12-1 includes the Blackhawks, Blues, Red Wings, Canucks, and the NYR. The Bruins and Flyers are next at 14-1. A loose interpretation of this is to say the Penguins and Rangers are Vegas’ pick to play in the EC finals next year. A lot of money is at stake to be won or lost by these gambling houses and while they are not perfect, they don’t make many mistakes. The Rangers, as comprised, are the No. 2 team in the East to win it all.

Does this mean stay put with what we have today? I watched a lot of Phoenix’s playoff games this past year and Shane Doan impressed me. He is tough, hard-nosed, and a great leader. If he can be signed I would do it in a heartbeat … He is familiar with many of the Rangers staff and you can never have enough good players that have uber character. Plus, he doesn’t take any carcillo from anyone and stands up for his teammates as well as anyone in the league.

One last thought. Call me crazy, but I like Stu Bickel a lot. I think the kid has a bright future on this team. He is tough, likes to hit, not afraid to drop the gloves, and he is quite capable of that all important first pass out of his own end.

“What?”  you say? “Say what again!.  I dare you.  I double dare you.

  1. Hillarious!

    Thanks for the shout out

    Great post Eddiex3

    I think Dubi needs to get back on the ice ASAP. He is healed.

    I think our un-upgraded defense could use a shorter season.

    Hank can handle a shorter season. Beer-on with less than 10 games sounds great.

    Stu Bickel has his moments. He could be a player.

    bottom line. If we win the Cup in a shortened season, will it be tainted?

  2. awesome post eddie!!

    tomb- i dont think were winning the cup if we dont get a top line winger besides gabby anyway, but if we did, hell no it wouldnt be tainted. i just hope we get to see hockey this year

  3. and i know, the kreider could be that guy for us, but i dont see it until he plays a little longer than the 15 or so games he played in last playoffs.

  4. Good post, Eddie. LMGO!

    Go do what he said, guest bloger…

    Lol, Carp, I’d like to see what you edited.

  5. I’ve posted a few times during last season that htere will be a strike. When I posted about a strike I figured at least half a season but now I think there won’t be a season coming up and Buttman has no idea who he is bargaining aginst. Fehr is a hard nose negotiator, it could get ugly.

  6. Paradise waits, on the crest of a wave, his angels in flames.
    He has no pain, like a child he is pure, he is not to blame.
    Poised for flight, wings spread bright, spring from night into the sun.
    Dont stop to run, he can fly like a lie, he cant be outdone.

    nice post Eddietreetimes.

    CCCP,you and IM rock!

    hi NYR_FAN!

  7. The original offer is a joke, right??? Do they really believe the union will agree to anything resembling such concessions.

    I hope Fehr steps on the back of Buttman’s neck and suffocates him. It is the same bull that the locked out Con-Ed workers are getting from management.

    Dog, I gotta say I disagree with some. i know it’s ‘the thing to do’ to side with the players. I like the year cap at 5 (or maybe 7 tops) years for a contract length. no signing bonus. Even pay per year. These all allow the Salary cap to be followed.

    But screw the owners if they are looking for 57 -46% UNLESS they give back to the fans who are paying CRAZY numbers to buy tickets and junk. If they don’t tear down the out of hand ticket prices, let the percentage go up to 60, for all I care.

  11. I would make that deal with Semin because at that price he is movable.

    Unclear and sarcastic as always eddie, eddie, eddie. Love you, Prof.

  12. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    happy birthday grabby……i prefer a full season but the owners are paying players mucho dinero and are looking for a fight since they cannot control their own spending….the owners want language in place that puts fiscal responsibility in an agreement….

    A better solution would be to better market this great game, increase the paltry TV revenue, and perhaps chill on expanding to areas that hover around 90F in mid january

  17. e3 – Bickel is a feel-good story for sure, and the kid seems like a serviceable defensemen. But I think we saw his ceiling last year, and I think we’ll be seeing him bounced around the lineup more as an enforcer than anything else. Just a suspicion, but I think his resigning is probably more of an insurance policy until the Rangers know where Mike Sauer is next season and whether Dylan McIlrath is ready to make the jump. Once (if) Big Mack makes the NHL, Bickel will likely be moved. But for the player he is, you can’t knock the price: Traded a no-longer-in-hockey defenseman(Nigel Williams) for a kid that made and didn’t look out of place in the NHL last year.

  18. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    manny – coming from someone equally unclear and even more sarcastic….i thank you, i think….

  19. 1) Dubi will have extra time to seek a sports psychologist so that he can get back to being the next John LeClair;

    He doesn’t need a psychologist… He had an off year just like “The Great One”.

    2) The Rangers’ players will be fresher come playoff time having played fewer games;

    So will every other team… not quite sure how that gives us an advantage.

    3) More time off means that Hank will be well rested come playoffs;

    Agian, so will every other goalie…

    4) Brian Boyle’s, Marc Staal’s and Michael Sauer’s noodles all could use more time to heal, especially Sauer Power. Given a lockout, Sauer won’t feel forced to rush back;

    If they aren’t ready to play they won’t play regardless of how much time off they have.

    5) McD and Danny G could play 30 minutes per game with MDZ and Stahl playing the other 30. In fact, in a few games McD and Girardi could play the entire 60… both showed they can handle 50+ minutes if needed;

    I think that’s the worst point you made. Whether they can or can’t play 30 minutes it’s not a good idea. That’s how people get hurt. There is a reason we roll 6 defensemen not 2…

    So how exactly does a lockout help? I only see negatives from a lockout occuring the big one being it’s TERRIBLE FOR THE SPORT.

  20. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    phil – my hope is that bickel surprises everyone….he will get better because he wants to…i sense he is a work horse and with the right tutoring, the sky is the limit….he has soft hands and makes good passes…just needs to tone down his mistakes…..experience and learned knowledge will help….

  24. Hate to say I told you so but I posted on here the other day I had a feeling fehr was going to propose on dropping the cap and adding a luxury tax some what like baseball and basketball. Buttman and the owners cried the old cba doesn’t work for certain teams, same crap he cried the last time. Fehr responded with a proposal of dropping the cap and adding a luxury tax.

  25. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    thx my bruthas……Ilb – rub that lil belly for me and make a happy wish……go luck in the week (and forever thereafter :))

  28. tommyG- where did you see Fehr’s proposal? It hasn’t been given yet. What you are citing is just Brook’s suggestion as to how NHLPA should respond to the “war”

  29. ilb2001,
    sorry, I’m bad, your right but it’s funny how brooks is suggesting it and how I brought it up the other day. This is fehr’s M.O.. I can’t wait to see how/what proposal Fehr will counter with, all I know is if there wasn’t a season before the last time, with fehr leading the charge for the players, buttman is in for a big fight.

  30. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    my brutha – yes, those morning vapors are the best….

    i am not optimistic re: this season starting on time…

  31. I pointed out last night that the NHL now has gross revenues in excess of $3 billion…

    The idea that they would allow for lost time makes no sense…its all greed at this point, not economics….they should eliminate the small markets….

    the NHL will NEVER be the NFL in terms of $$….but I guess that’s the goal of Bettman and BOG….

    Did you guys see that Drew Brees’ new contract gives him guaranteed $40 million…and it’s only a 5 year deal….he could break his leg and never play a single game and walk away with $40 mil….

  32. NYR_FAN ,
    it’s alwats about greed in sports these days. The more money the owners make the more money they want in there pockets.

  33. it’s hilarious that Buttman is crying the same tune as last time and one of the teams in the front line complaining (wild) spends 200 million on two players in free agency. If Buttman thinks he is going to go with this story again, he is in for a rude awakening.

  34. Well, the owners that are able to turn a profit probably are just content with keeping their profits realized…I bet they would rather stay in business than not….profits are better than no profits

    It’s the unprofitable owners/franchises that are the problem…and who’s fault is that? I’ll give you a hint….he is a rear-end…

    The players aren’t making unrealistic demands, yet, are they?

  35. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    profits are cool…….i meditate daily with mine…

  36. carp..your opinion please on a good pro-player proposal…..why can’t fehr say to the owners that instead of playing for nothing but a ring in the playoffs,the players get a pro-rated salary for each playoff game(e.g. a player making 4,100,000 gets 50,000 per game PLUS the bonus included for advancing each round….why should the players play that much harder for no pay? it never made sense to me…any opinions out there,carp and my fellow ranger-hockey fans?

    E3, Just noticed this on Google:

    ‘Word has it, Gary Bettman, Prime Minister of the NHL, is seriously considering the following team additions within the next 2 years:

    ** Santo Domingo Punta Cana’s
    **Panama Canal’s
    ** San Juan Tostilla’s
    **Rio Rocket-o’s

    Emanating out of the CBA talks is more optimism that teams near the equator are, “a good thing for us to be considering”, said Bettman.” We plan to take over the world by 2018″ ‘

    Wow, EEE, how did you know?

  45. e3 – yeah, I got to admit I was pleasantly surprised by Bickel’s ability. When they made that deal, I was really expecting him to be a career AHLer. If he does become a serviceable defenseman, it’ll be a big bonus. But again, I have my doubts. We’ll see. I hope you’re right.

  46. e3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my friends on

    wicky – i am a tooth sayer – i see and know all…

    phil – for all of our sakes, i hope bickel=norris winner

  47. I read it, NYR_FAN. He is right, the new CBA is one of the reasons most predicted that Nash’s value was at it’s highest at deadline. The other one, Rick Nash’s value still equals his heavy 7.8M for 6 years, but now minus his playoffs performance for any team he would’ve been traded then.

  48. Also, totally agree with this:

    “If the lockout is protracted, there is a distinct risk of permanently alienating fans who contributed to the current $3.2B revenue pool this past season”

    JR – “any lockout is determinental to the future of the league”

  60. I doubt, Matty. In fact, the numbers proposed by NHL, are just that, numbers. If they negotiate, it could become acceptable. No reason to believe that NHLPA is thinking the cap will go up with the same speed indefinitely. Otherwise they will have the NFL cap very soon while generating by far less money as a league. I can actually crunch some numbers today and look at different possibilities if they negotiate and give it to Carp to fill in as a guest blogger. Would anyone be interested?

    The proposal by the NHL isn’t all that shocking, IMO. We all knew the league was going to shoot for the moon with the deal, but let’s hope that they are willing to negotiate and not go for the kill again. If they do, Fehr will stomp them into dust, then laugh at Bettman’s horrified face before he sends him to the moon.

  66. Sign Doan short term if he would do it. 2 yrs max, send Dubi n step for WEBER n sit and wait

  67. JUst a few commentaries about the sometimes nutty season known as summer here in Florida.

    So much talk about Great Whites, and stupid behavior on the part of water goers. It has long been known that GWs are migratory fish,and have even been found up north where seals and other critters go. They are not surprises to be found off Cape Cod, because that’s only a hiccup from Montauk Point LI and some of the hugest GWs ever recorded have been caught by shark fishermen there. Look it up.

    But someone went ga ga over being attacked by a Bull Shark the other day, and those are commonly found right here off of Cocoa Beach and the area south of there. Well don’t mistake a Bull for a not so dangerous fish. Many of them get to be about 7-8 feet and with huge mouths……and very aggressive.

    Someone wanted to know if they attacked Manatees. I’ve never heard of it, but I wouldn’t doubt it, were one happen to fall in a shark’s area….look where some of the most disastrous attacks thru the years.

    New Jersey in the 1920;s and one instance where one went up a NJ river and killed several folks.

    Routinely the great Barrier Reef off of Australia The Indian Ocean and South Africa. ( And Hawaii is home to their buddies, the Tiger Shark.) And none of them are fussy about who they eat.

  70. I don’t understand the owner’s proposal. I thought that revenues were at an all time high. If that is true then so should profits because player salaries are still at the same percentage of income that they were a few years ago. If profits are down then it isn’t because of player salaries. So, why are the owners requiring so much in give-backs by the players? Again, it doesn’t make sense to me.

    On another note, who in the world is Reggie Flood? Could that be Curt’s brother?

  93. Well, I admit I’m a bit nocturnal, but I will try to contribute in a civilized hour. But E3 is right, I am on your side, except that my thoughts on the season past are not organized yet. Torts’ coaching style made it so hard for me to say anything meaningful, even though I like him, because he made the best with the personnel he had to work with. Basically, you all on this blog, are trying to make his job easier, by buying/trading bodies, but E3 introduced seriously the subject of a possible lockout, something Mr Sather is fully aware of as a real possibility. Think about it, please.

    Newbear – in a perverse way, a lockout helps slats and the rangers … Certainly given gabby’s shoulder, the fiscal uncertainty that abounds which forces Glen’s hand to be patient, and the style of play the rangers employ, whatever is going to happen will happen… But, if there is a lockout while it likely hurts the game long term, it helps the rangers, arguably, in the short term.

  95. E3 – an interesting dilemma you have defined here, sad but true… We surely would like to be fans of a sport we love, ice hockey in our case, but when we get really carried away, there is this deep voice from the “above” saying : “Your pleasure, stupid fans, costs someone a lot of money, so please shut up.” Then we have to think about the real cost of entertainment of all kinds in this society of ours, not just ice hockey, but also “Seinfeld”, “Friends” and the other Hobbit-like junk that makes people vote funny.

    Newbear – no doubt. The entertainment industry rewards itself obscenely. It is beyond the beyond. From shooting 4 rounds of golf and making 1.2 million to an actor’s 20 million for reading someone else’s words for 6 weeks. It truly is absurd.

    It’s funny you mention “friends”, I never understood that show. While I think jennifer Aniston is a babe, the 3 moron dudes on that show were useless.
