RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH TAYLOR PYATT

NEW YORK, July 3, 2012 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Taylor Pyatt.

Pyatt, 30, skated in 73 games with the Phoenix Coyotes last season, registering nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points, along with 23 penalty minutes.  He ranked fourth on the Coyotes with 137 hits.  Pyatt skated in his 700th career regular season contest on November 19 at Buffalo.  He also recorded four goals and two assists in 16 playoff games.  He tied for third on the team in goals (four), which was also a career-high, ranked fifth in shots on goal (27), and tied for eighth in points (six) during the postseason.

He was originally selected by the New York Islanders as a first round choice, eighth overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.  The 11-year NHL veteran has posted two career hat tricks, on March 28, 2003, against Montreal and November 17, 2005, against Washington.  Pyatt has also advanced to the conference finals twice in his career, with the Buffalo Sabres in the 2006 playoffs and the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2012 playoffs.

The 6-4, 230-pounder has skated in 755 career regular season games with the NY Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, and Phoenix Coyotes, registering 130 goals and 134 assists for 264 points, along with 404 penalty minutes.  Pyatt achieved career milestones in 2009-10 with Phoenix, recording his 200th career point with a goal on December 23 against Anaheim and his 100th career goal on March 10 against Vancouver.  In 2008-09, he tallied his 100th career assist on April 2 against Anaheim as a member of the Canucks.  Pyatt established several career-highs in his first two seasons with Vancouver, including goals (23), points (37) and power play goals (nine) in 2006-07, and assists (21) in 2007-08.  In addition, he has recorded eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 57 career playoff contests with Buffalo, Vancouver and Phoenix.

In 2010-11, Pyatt registered 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points in 76 games with Phoenix.  He tied for the team lead with a career-high, six game-winning goals.  Pyatt also tied for third on the team in goals, ranked third in hits (143) and second among team forwards in plus/minus rating (plus-11).

Pyatt made his NHL debut on October 6, 2000, at Tampa Bay as a 19-year old with the NY Islanders.  He registered four goals and 14 assists for 18 points in 78 games that season.  He recorded his first career point with an assist on October 27 against Montreal, and notched his first NHL goal with the game-winner on November 27 against Tampa Bay.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native is the older brother of former Rangers’ draft pick, Tom Pyatt, who was selected as a fourth round choice, 107th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

anyway, I have some non-hockey news as all the trade rumour talk quiets down.

My cousin plays third base for a Chicago Cubs affiliate. He just moved up to AA, one step loser to the majors. He went 4-4 in his first game with Tenn. Smokies.

The extended family is excited for him.

  2. It’s nice to see Tom Poti is still collecting votes in the players you’d like to see on the rangers next year poll.

  3. thanks for that Sioux. I wouldnt be surprised at all if they both go to Minny either. Suter might want to let Parise take most of the attention by having him announce his decision first, and then Suter will announce it the following day or so.

  4. The Sedin twins. Ive gotta be honest here, I already have a bias against Swedes. And those 2 losers are so soft. In that 2011 Finals, they got exposed as frauds.

  5. Sioux-per-man on

Detroit just flew in a private jet to visit Suter at his farm in Wisconsin. So you never know.

I think if Parise chooses the Wild, Suter might follow.

If Parise goes elsewhere, Suter will go to Detroit, for 13 years $80+MM. Detroit won’t be able to add both Parise and Suter, but you never know. But the Twin Cities, and the land of 10,000 lakes is a beautiful place to live. Great hockey City/State, both are from the area. Suter is close in Wisconsin.

I see them both working a deal to play in MN. Just my guess. Personally I would love it. Parise is still my favorite Fighting Sioux player. I take the family to MN for every Ranger game. Worked on Cullen’s Cully’s Kids charity, and have met Zach a couple of times when he golfed up in Fargo for Matt’s Charity fund raiser. Great guys. Both are some of the very best people you would ever meet.

Jagr to Dallas!? WTB!?!? Why in the world would he want to play there!?!?

  7. Dreadnaught on

WTF – why do we need Taylor Pyatt?
Do he, Asham and Haley together equal the guts of one Brandon Prust?
    I don’t think so!

  8. JimboWoodside on

    >>>Fewer games to dog it, Jimbo.

They play less games in a season in Dallas?? Since when, Carp? ;-)

  9. Sioux-per-man on

Funny story a “Druken Whistle” cost me ALOT of money at the charity auction. But hey I got the Jersey Chair, (with the Stanley Cup winning Roster on the back) Crazy the Ranger chair went for $3,500 the Carolina one set me back $1,500. Ugh. Now it sits in my office. Nice conversation piece.

  10. JimboWoodside on

Why are we stocking the team with ex-Icelanders? And not even the ones that could score goals!

Is Bryan Trottier coming back as coach?

  11. Dreadnaught on

Who amongst the trio is the goal scorer we so sorely need?
I hope Sather has a monster package-deal somewhere up his sleeve. There must be a motive to this madness. Its subtraction by addition.

  12. JimboWoodside on

Ya know, not that anyone cares about my opinions, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Pa-Ree-Zay and Suter landing in Minny – that state is an American hockey hotbed, almost as nuts about the game as Canada is, and I’d like to see them do better out there. Our first American-born NHL players came out of Minnesota, I think..

  13. Sioux-per-man on

Gotta go boys. It’s 100 degrees, and the rental just blew the AC. Looks like I’ll be “working” over the 4th :(

Have a Happy 4th of July Boneheads!!!

  14. Jimbo, I hear I wasn’t around for your birthday. Happy belated birthday, pal! All the best!

    EVANDER KANE!

    LGR!

  15. JimboWoodside on

Yes it was, Latona – thank you very much! My birthday pretty much was a bust, just like the Free-Agent Frenzy turned out to be! ;-/

  16. Sioux-per-man on

Crazy. Too funny. We’ll have to hook up at a Sioux game at the RALPH for a beer.

Or a Parise Wild game :)

  17. Sioux-per-man on

Carp – I found your “Sabre” :) Now I have to talk my buddy into mounting it for you.

  18. Czechthemout!!! on

Very good signing. Very good value too. Can play on the 3rd line if needed. He is a major uptick to the fourth line, especially in the playoffs where useless dregs like Rupp don’t belong on the ice.

The fourth line just got dramatically better and bigger

    Pyatt- Boyle-Asham/Yogan/Haley> than Prust/Mitchell/Rupp

    So far so good.

  19. JimboWoodside on

    >>>Carp – I found your “Sabre” :) Now I have to talk my buddy into mounting it for you.

    Errah…is that even legal!? ;)

  20. LOL!!! is he joking?

    Jaromir Jagr ?@68Jagr
Just to everybody knows:Max Talbot is the most underrated and underpaid player in NHL.Holmgren did a great job signing him last season.

  21. if jagr said that he has lost his mind.

jagr is a mercenary always about the money. but i still love the guy

  22. I’ve read that he doesn’t use his size. We will be on him like Rupp. I don’t know Sather’s plan, doesn;t seem like much of one.

  23. leetchhalloffame on

Can we sign yet another non-factor this off-season? What are you doing Slats?

  24. Finally got around to watching some Asham fight clips, have you guys seen these? He’s a punching bag when he fights a heavy. At least Prust knew how to hold his own.

    Haley is in the minors.

    Pyatt doesn’t use his size.

I’m adding up all this salary, a lot more than $2.3m.

To those who want to move on from Prust, um, NO.

  25. leetchhalloffame on

Looks like Slats is collecting garbage these days. Think I saw him riding on the back of a NYC Sanitation Dept. truck this week.

  26. We should have signed Whitney for $4.5 million, Parentau for $4 million and Garrison for $4.6 million. That wouldve been much more productive, right leetch?

  27. Tell these people NYR. Pratt is a great signing.

He’s better than Boyle (when playing with the right folks) but cheaper. He’s huge. He’s good defensively. Woohoo!

  28. Asham is a punk- can’t wait to see the length of his first suspension. That cross check to the throat will cost you the season now that you’re a Ranger.

  29. You know what would make me happy? A bottom two of …

    Dubinsky – Anisimov – Hagelin
    Pyatt – Boyle – Prust

… with a move for a top 6 wing being the only remaining hole to fill.

  30. Wow. I understand people liking Prust, but Pyatt has much more upside, and is a better all around player. Being good at just grinding will only get you so far in this league.

Put Prust with the Sedins and he won’t rack up the same numbers as Pyatt.

Also Pyatt knows where he signed, and obviously knows the coach. More than likely Torts will set him as straight as he can be.

  31. Amen, Mazz.

That is beautiful the doctor. My eyes welled up with tears just reading it.

  32. Pyatt is a smart signing guys…Manny is right….

He’s taking the place of Feds….he’s bigger…and harder to knock off the puck…

I could see Pyatt and Boyle pinning the puck deep in the o-zone on the forecheck, cycling….perfect for each other….

  33. Pyatt is also very good friends with our Staal, from what I understand. Incentive to make him stay and not join his brothers in NC? LOL

  34. the word on twitter is that the ladies like pyatt’s eyes. so, there ya go.

  35. “Wow. I understand people liking Prust, but Pyatt has much more upside, and is a better all around player.”

Pyatt replaces Fedo, not Prust. Doesn’t fight, doesn’t PK.

  36. leetch, no thanks. I dont think id be able to live with myself knowing youre here criticizing my signing. Brett Maclean of the coyotes went into cardiac arrest yesterday. Best wishes to him. 4 am here. Good night..

  37. pyatt will be 31 in august and is from thunder bay ontario otherwise known as staalville

  38. I have no problem wit Asham. I just always thought of him as dirty. The whole “Go To Sleep” thing and what he did to Schenn…

Could be worse….we could have signed VPG….

  39. True the doctor but Pyatt and Asham have more goal scoring potential than Prust and Fedotenko.

  40. I think Prust is better than Asham. But Pyatt is a slight upgrade over Feds.

Nothing to whine aboot. Simple depth moves. What do you want Slats to do? There’s not many top guys out there to sign, other than Semin, if you want to take that chance.

  41. For two more seasons I really hope we get more Rupp than what we got. If that does happen, Rupp + Asham + Pyatt is in my opinion better than last years Rupp + Prust + Feds… but you can’t discount the heart of both of those players, especially Feds in the playoffs. But it’s not like Asham and Pyatt are incapable of being as valuable if not more this season. We’ll see.

Pyatt and Asham still have to play for Torts and find a way to fit in. They’ll get their chance and well… we’ll see.

    @@

  42. Guys. Pyatt could score 20+ goals. He’s good defensively and he’s HUGE. Maybe he doesn’t fight but try knocking him off the puck. Dude is a legit 3rd line LW. He’s an upgrade over SO many people that have played on this team over the last few years. Just be happy. He’s reasonably priced and a good player and a good fit. And he has never been invisible in the playoffs.

  43. I really do love the Pyatt move, I’m just pointing out that it has zero to do with Pruster.

  44. Oh them great point The Doctor. You still rule and I will go to you for ALL medical needs

  45. Id honestly give Semin a shot but definitely not more than a year or two….torts said u gotta keep an open mind and wit our offensive struggles, not like we cant use a goal scorer….maybe im wrog but i wouldnt mind him

  46. bull dog line on

still pining for Prust I see. he took the money and ran. not on our team anymore. Pyatt cheaper and better than Prust. in two years when Montreal realizes Prust is not worth the money, they will waive him and then the Rangers will claim on re entry waivers. just like Avery.

  47. The thing I remember about Asham is that when he fought Paul Mara at the Garden, and Mara injured his shoulder, Asham stopped throwing punches, and after the game Mara sought him out to thank him.

  48. Asham also had one of the most seemingly honest, self aware athlete apologies ever after the Beagle fight. I’m sure he’s a great dude. My issue is strictly the lack of a second skill.

  49. boxcareddiehospodar on

    Mister D,

what would be even better is Boyle off the 4th line and the team altogether.

  50. boxcareddiehospodar on

Pyatt and Asham are an upgrade over rupp, mitchell, fedetenko, prust and hopefully boyle

    good move

  51. Sufferingsince79 on

Not a lot of production left out there, so what would you pay for Semin & how many years? His career playoff stats are not that different from Gabby (not a compliment) but he definitely ups the skill level of the team which was often the criticism we heard last year. You don’t have to give up a player, he could only help the PP and if he doesn’t work out, trade him at the deadline. I know he’s a 10 ft pole guy but occasionally those guys end up on cup winning teams. You can’t have every guy on the roster fit the team mold perfectly can you? Beats a swift kick in the Asham.

  52. Rollin Dubious on

I hate ZP’s father, he lied to us. Just kidding. Sorry to see prust go but he had to seek max money and wasn’t going to get it here.
    I like that slats hasn’t gone tilt……….yet.

  53. Sufferingsince79,
I already wrote about it few times. Now, if Dallas pays 41 years old Jagr 4.5 mil, Semin is worth everywhere up to this number. For 1 or 2 years max.(all this only under a forse-major circumstances).

  54. Sufferingsince79 on

Got it 4Ever. Trying to keep up w/ all the posts. At least we could stop talking about Prust.

  55. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

    Carp
Great reminder about asham. I still do not see why the complaints about asham. I think he is a pretty honest and straight forward guy and I don’t mind in the least bit that he is willing to go a bit over the line occasionally.

Thanks ILB and manny for the updates today.

    Carp (again)
so you are willing to babysit? Did I understand that correctly?

  56. Jesse Spector ?@jessespector
Beatification. RT @ItsScottieTime: What are realistic expectations for Chris Kreider?

    Hahaha!!!

  57. I honestly can’t imagine how someone could not like Boyle without (1) being contrarian for the sake of contrarian, (2) really hockey dumb or (3) personally aggrieved by Boyle.

  58. “I still do not see why the complaints about asham.”

My complaint is the same as its been for the 54 hours or whatever: You’re replacing a guy who filled two roles with a guy who fills one. Nothing personal against Asham.

  59. Carp is offering to babysit? We’re going to see Bruce in August and haven’t gotten someone to watch our daughter yet so that’s awesome news. Beer in the fridge, I’ll make you a pizza or something before I leave.

  60. Maybe this fits under (3) Mister D, but Ill add a (4)Boyle is a bostonian and Patriots fan.

I do like him and think he’s very valuable to the team, IMO more valuable than Prust was.

  61. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

Did Suter and Parise give any hint at all when they would make their decisions?

  62. Absolutely Boyle over Prust. But I live just outside Boston. So Prust over Boyle?

  63. See the Red Wings offer to Ryan Suter? Imagine if Redden’s contract was for 13 years!!!

  64. Outside Boston? Where the Doctor? Charlestown? Roxbury? Dorcester? Oxford? Charlton?

  65. Somerville, but if I cross the street (literally), I’m super sophisticated and classy in Cambridge.

  66. Wow. I was just joking. That’s a real place. Some of my worst moments were in Boston. Some of my best were when I was at Berklee. Thus, I am conflicted. I try not to judge players, e.g. Boyle, by where they are from or who they root for. I am sure Boyle wants to win more than he wants Tom Brady, arguably the best QB alive, to win.

  67. Mister, I stay in Cambridge almost every time I go to Boston. Though I spend most of my time in the North End.

  68. I’ve decided I love it here as long as atleast 1/2 the people around me aren’t from here. Great city when transient, Philadelphia Jr. when not.

  69. Arguably the best QB? Of course he is, but its hard to put my bias aside on that one. 3-2 in Super Bowls. 3-0 when he had other team’s practices on tape and Super Bowl walkthroughs. Also has the gutsiest and best coach in the game (a video game head coach) who has no fear of making a mistake.

  70. boxcareddiehospodar on

    Carp,

I know everyone has a soft spot for Boyle, but he is nothing better than a 4th line center and penalty killer.

Has the size but never uses it!
