  1. I don’t want to go outside today. It’s gonna be Lebum/Heat mania down here. Please pray for me.

  2. Havent we traded for Ryan or Nash yet?

Slats must be loving that Ryan is apparently available – thats probably better leverage than Nash being able to veto any deal with his NTC/NMC. Howson must be cursing now, any GM worth his salt will be putting the phone down on Howson with the words “OK, talk to you later just going to call Bob Murray”

  3. Good morning, boneheads!

I don’t anticipate many, if any, serious trades today. The FA market is pretty thin, GMs will hold on to their trading assets as long as they can, unless someone gives them an offer they can refuse. Let’s see what Gordie has planned for us though.

  4. How is the draft split over the 2 days, is it rounds 1-2 today and the remaining rounds tomorrow?

  5. Curiosity question: Who would you rather trade if necessary, Stepan or Hagelin? I sort of thought this was an obvious call but a couple things I’ve read recently (not super insider whispers, mind you) make me think it’s not.

  6. Czechthemout!!! on

So it looks like we will not get our added scoring through a trade. At least not in the ear term. Ad free agency is not going to produce one either. So where do we get more scoring? I know the short answer is Kreider and hoping Hags,Step,AA,Dubi stepping up. Is it enough. We will find out.

  7. Morning all,

Seems as though Howson is still asking for the Moon for a player with only 4 playoff games under his belt in nine seasons.

Gotta be realistic here. How much do you really want to give up for a player like that?
He is skilled to be sure. But at $7.8 million per season on a contract that still has some years to it, I’d say thanks – but no thanks.

  8. Can someone link LB’s article from this morning for everyone to read? I can’t do it on iPad. Interesting info, indeed. Including the very recent one. According to LB, during their meeting yesterday, Nash’s agent told Howson that he wasn’t expanding his list of teams, and that Ottawa and Philadelphia isn’t on it.

  9. Ben- he can ask what he wants. The truth is, they’re at the point of no return. He has to trade him. And the longer it goes, the uglier it’ll get. Nash will most likely become less and less accommodating, if that happens.

  10. So much for Nash wanting to help out the Jackets with restocking their team with the best package available then.

  11. I would LOVE to know why Nash isn’t interested in Philadelphia or Ottawa. Philly is very interesting because they seem like they could be very close.

  12. So much for all the non sense about Nash going to the flyers. According to brooks the flyers are not on the list of teams Nash would be willing to go to. Unfortunately Howson is on another planet with his demand of players he wants from the rangers.

  13. The Doctor: I will respond to your question. As an avid hoarder I am not keen to give up either Stepan or Hagelin. If push came to shove, I guess that I would be most willing to give up Hagelin since he has less of a track record and Stepan is more of an Assist guy centre, given a line like Kreider and Gaborik or something like that I think could really put up a bunch of points. Hagelin is a real talent but I think a team like the Maple Leafs or Ottawa that values youth and speed might give us something shiny for him.

That is my answer. For now.

  14. czechthemout!!!! on

So Nash did in fact probably veto a trade to the Flyers. Despite Holmgren’ denials. I think Nash really wants to come here and Howson/Patrick doesn’t want to trade him here. I agree. It will get ugly out there.

  15. And if anyone thinks I am crazy, look at the STARS that were traded in the past, and think about what they were traded for.

Anymore than that and the NYR are crazy.

  16. Czech,
Patrick is the problem here. He hates Sather. Remember when he traded Jagr to Washington just to screw Sather (and to a lesser extent Jagr as well)? Glen has to hold firm. No player is worth that much. Nash and Ryan are second tier players. Sid, Malkin, Stamkos, are the guys you clean the cupboard for. Not Nash or Ryan.

  17. Good morning ‘heads,

Back from Baltimore. I think Sather is not that desperate to bring Nash here and will not sacrifice too much. Semin feels more and more real each day.

  18. cw,
The ducks already told the rangers they are not interested in Dubi. The ducks would want Stepan. Larry brooks stated that Stepan is one of the untouchables.

  19. Interesting read over at Jacketscannon where the writer looks at potential packages for each Eastern conf team.

    http://www.jacketscannon.com/2012/6/21/3104966/potential-trade-packages-for-rick-nash-eastern-conference

Even they think NYR is Nash’s most likely destination – i think they are deluded if they think Mack or Kreider will be in there – although i think we may have to lose one of MDZ, Step, Hags or Anisimov to sweeten the pot – Dubinsky is a given in that deal.

Interestingly i saw something earlier that the Quacks are not interested in Dubi in return for Ryan, even if the pot is sweetened which i think means they are clearing cap space in order to trade for, or sign as UFA a big name player.

  20. Sorry ilb I stepped away for a while. I’m on iPhone now but here’s the text from Larry’s article:

PITTSBURGH — On the 20-year anniversary of the NHL Draft during which the Rangers and Flyers both made trades with Quebec for Eric Lindros, the 2012 Winter Classic opponents are once again pursuing not only the same big name forward on the market, but the same two wingers in the hours before the first-round is conducted here tonight.
For both the Rangers and Flyers are involved in discussions regarding both Columbus’ Rick Nash and Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan.
The Rangers, who are believed to have quarantined Chris Kreider, Ryan McDonagh, Marc Staal and Derek Stepan (in addition to Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi and Henrik Lundqvist) probably don’t have enough young NHL-ready talent available in order to get Ryan, the 25-year-old with three years remaining on his contract at an annual $5.1 million cap charge.
Anaheim is not believed to have interest in Brandon Dubinsky ($4.2M cap hit), who would be one of the pieces going the other way in a hypothetical deal for Nash that won’t occur unless Columbus general manager Scott Howson slashes his asking price for the 28-year-old with six years at $7.8M per season remaining on his contract.
Including Stepan in an offer for Ryan would pique the interest of Anaheim GM Bob Murray, who is seeking a second-line center behind Ryan Getzlaf. But moving Stepan would leave the Rangers with either Dubinsky or Artem Anisimov as the putative second-line pivot on the summer roster.
The Blue Jackets’ price for Nash may not match what the Nordiques were able to receive in exchange for No. 88, who was awarded to the Flyers by arbitrator Larry Bertuzzi for Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Mike Ricci, Steve Duchesne, two first-rounders and $15 million — after the Rangers had agreed to part with John Vanbiesbrouck, Alex Kovalev, Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, two first-rounders and $12M — but it’s expensive enough that the Rangers continue to dismiss it out of hand.
The Flyers are pursuing Nash, though Philadelphia is not on No. 61’s list of teams for which he would waive his no-move clause. But then, two decades ago, Lindros had said he would refuse to report to Philadelphia if traded there by the Nordiques, and he relented for reasons never explained and that are covered by a confidentiality clause in a subsequent action against agent Rick Curran.
Howson continues to deal with teams not on Nash’s list — including Ottawa — even as The Post has been told that agent Joe Resnick reiterated his client’s refusal to expand his list during a meeting with the Columbus general manager here yesterday afternoon.
The intrigue surrounding the draft, in which the Rangers hold the 28th overall pick, the Islanders the fourth overall and the Devils the 29th overall selection, centers on, a) whether Edmonton will select top-rated Russian winger Nail Yakupov (who played with Sarnia of the OHL) or go with WHL Everett defenseman Ryan Murray as the first overall pick; and b) whether highly ranked Russian center Mikhail Grigorenko (who played for Quebec of the QMJHL) might slide.
The Islanders are believed to have interest in Grigorenko and so does Toronto at No. 5, but if he somehow slides into double digits, the Rangers will investigate every option of moving up to get him, unlikely a scenario as that may be.
The Rangers — who hold picks 28, 59, 89 and 119 overall in the lottery that concludes with Rounds 2-7 tomorrow afternoon — could attempt to move up into the low 20’s if a person of interest remains available or, alternately, could seek to recover an extra selection or two in later rounds by trading down from No. 28.

  21. Also – if its true its between NYR, Ottawa and Philly at the moment then we wont have to sweeten the pot at all – the other 2 are not on Nash’s rumoured (very) short list

  22. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

I think the Rangers need to aim high for top end talent tonight. Don’t take another high floor, low ceiling player like JT Miller. If either Subban or Vasilevski are there, grab one. Lundqvist can’t play forever, and at worst, we would just be blocking the Devils from grabbing one. If somehow a guy like Koekkoek is still around, grab him over the goaltenders. Go for the homerun pick. Our system is so riddled with meh players that grabbing another will not help in any way. If nobody that has a high ceiling is available, trade down and go quantity over quality.

  23. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

BTW, I prefer Subban to Vasilevski. I think Vasilevski is the more polished prospect and will be a fine goaltender, maybe even a premier guy, but Subban’s athleticism and natural ability just makes me wonder what he could become with some good coaching, which we have in spades in Benoit Allaire.

  24. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

I think everyone is ignoring the possibility that they just don’t trade Nash. Sure, it seems crazy that they would opt to keep him at this point, but we are talking about Columbus and Scott Howson. Am I the only one who thinks he could Howson it that badly?

  25. Carp

have you heard anything about the Rangers looking to trade up or down? preferably down?

  26. czechthemout!!!! on

    Cw

I remember. Patrick said that he would not trade Jagr to the Rangers then and will not trade Nash to the Rangers now. All of this makes a good argument for the fact that Amy player who signs a ten year contract is pretty much enslaving themselves to a te they may not want to play for long before that contract expires. Sign it at your own risk.

  27. Drafting a goalie in the 1st round is a waste of a pick. Hank is too young to be worrying about his replacement.

Heck, look at Marty. They didn’t draft his replacement until he was like 38…

  28. czechthemout!!!! on

I think it was Wicki who said that Yandle may be in play yesterday. Like him as an offensive dman and pp point man. He already really well and has a very good shot. Any thoughts on him as an option if Schultz signs elsewhere?

  29. czechthemout!!!! on

I don’t think there will be any big trades today at all. All the buildup last week was just that. All the web sites wanted the hits and I am sure they got them. Oh well. I just hope the draft is not a repeat of the NHL awards show in terms of excitement.

  30. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Brooks has suggested, and I agree, that if Grigorenko somehow falls to double digits, they try and make a fast move to trade up to grab him. Picks and Dubi. I’d say “or Anisimov,” but I’d like to keep the Russian player around if they want to bring a young Russian in, not only to help him get used to the adjustment, but to help him learn English and/or get instruction as well. Buffalo at 12 might be a good fit. They are looking for bigger, tougher players and aren’t afraid to spend money. Send them Prust’s rights as well if you have to or a mid-level prospect as well if it needs it. Besides, I’m sure Sally would be happy to have nose-picker closer to Buffalo.

I’m also a big fan of Koekkoek, and if he is available around 22 but Subban and Vasilevski are off the board, I’d look to move up. I think that kid is going to be a really good player.

  31. I’m rooting for a quiet day. At a rehearsal dinner for a wedding my wife is in tonight.

Manny: I thought Stepan too, but I also thought he was a clear tier above Hagelin. Maybe that’s where I was wrong.

  32. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

oleo, Lundqvist’s style will wear him out at a much younger age than Brodeur. Hank’s heavy butterfly reliance is just wearing away his knees and hips. Brodeur didn’t really incorporate much butterfly into his game until recently. That is why his body has allowed him to play into such an old age.

And even if Lundqvist is fine in a few years, how does it hurt to have an excellent young goaltender as a trade chip? Or maybe he and Lundqvist can be a time share to better preserve him in his later years. Subban is only 19. In 5 years, Lundqvist will be 35. Will it really be that bad to have a 24 year old goaltender there to play 30 games so Lundqvist can be well rested for the playoffs?

  33. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

CTO, I always think the draft is exciting, even if there aren’t any trades and even if teams stay mostly on schedule with conventional draft board rankings (CSS, ISS, McKenzie, McKeen, etc.). I just love seeing what organizational philosophies are.

  34. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Parise, Suter, and Schultz have everyone in a Mexican stand-off on the trade front. Everyone is too cautious to make a big move in the hope that they can land one (or more) of those guys. I think all the deals get made AFTER those three guys sign somewhere and teams are left having to move assets to get the big pieces they want.

Now what will be a big let down is if Parise and Suter both resign. THAT will be boring. And crappy because the Devils will still have Parise.

  35. iWicky "Rupp Yours!!!" on

Morning ILB, manny, Sally, and all!

    Czech
Yes, kuklas korner was talking about it last night a bit re yandle (I think it was a twitter source, so take it for what that is worth)

  36. “Lundqvist’s style will wear him out at a much younger age than Brodeur. Hank’s heavy butterfly reliance is just wearing away his knees and hips. ”

    Tell that to Dominik Hasek…

  37. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Kevin Allen’s most recent mock draft coincidentally has Grigorenko going to the Sabres at 12 and Koekkoek also going to the Sabres at 21. I really think they would be a good fit for a trade.

He also has the Rangers taking di Giuseppe, which I’m sure the NY Italians would enjoy, but I think that’s another “meh” pick.

Based on Kevin Allen’s mock, I’d rather they take Matheson who he has going to the Kings at 30. To me, skating is #1 and they say this kid is an excellent, excellent skater.

  38. “According to Jeff Z. Klein of the NY Times, Howson asked for Brandon Dubinsky and a combination of Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, Chris Kreider, Ryan McDonagh, Michael Del Zotto and possibly two first round picks in a deal for Nash at the deadline.”

wait, so am I misreading or does Howson expect to get Dubinsky, Stepan, Hagelin, Kreider, McDonagh and Del Zotto for a guy who’s never cracked 80 points?

  39. E3 (pimp's angel) stay thirsty my freinds on

JR – ” in the contextual reactivity of a major trade is useful”

  40. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

oleo, Hasek is a false comparison for so many reasons. First, Hasek didn’t play butterfly, at all. He threw his body around. That’s more tolling on his back and groin than on his hip flexors and knees. And he basically took three seasons off to let his body heal from 02-03 until the beginning of 05-06 (he played 22 games in 03-04). Also, he had only played 678 NHL games (regular season and playoffs) before he took his 3 year sabbatical at age 37. Lundqvist has already played 523 at age 30. By the time he is 37, at this pace, he will close to or even exceeding 1000 games.

Also, once Hasek DID return to the NHL, he played 43, 56, and 41 regular season games in the three injury-plagued years he was back.

Finally, Hasek is (in my opinion) the best goaltender of all time. If you have to resort to picking the greatest ever as your basis of whether Lundqvist can play on in later years, that’s not very helpful. Lundqvist is a great goaltender, but he ain’t no Hasek. Why not look at what has happened to other great goaltenders. Playing at their previously high levels well into the late 30s is the exception, not the rule.

Hell, before this year, Brodeur hadn’t had a good playoffs since before the lockout.

  41. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Lloyd, no, I think you are misunderstanding. I think it means Dubi, the picks, and then two or three of the listed players.

  42. Ok, well that’s a bit better.

Dubi, Stepan and Hagelin for Nash? Hmm, I’d have to consider that.

  43. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Lloyd, I would not consider that. Hagelin’s speed is something this team desperately needs. And Stepan is the only guy in the whole system that projects to be a quality center.

Also, I don’t know why anyone would offer more for Nash than they would for Ryan. I like Ryan so much more than Nash.

  44. “I like Ryan so much more than Nash.”

Agreed. I’m pretty sure there’s no edge I’d give to Nash here; on ice performance, age, contract, it all goes Ryan’s way.

  45. I don’t remember anyone saying Nash would cost more than Ryan. I think it’s pretty obvious it’s quite opposite.

  46. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Mister D, there are aspects of Nash’s game that are superior to Ryan’s, but I like Ryan’s overall game better. Particularly, I think Nash’s spots of superiority would help our PP more than Ryan would, but I think the PP would be further improved by a better PP QB than it would be by adding Nash’s skill set, making Ryan’s overall advantages more valuable.

I also think Nash is more of a leader than Ryan, but that’s not something the Rangers need more of in the dressing room.

  47. I think Howson is screwing Nash because Nash went to ownership and asked for Howson to be fired. That’s why I think Howson’s asking price is a pipe dream. I also think Howson doesn’t like that Nash has limited to what team he will go to. This situation could get ugly as time goes on.

  48. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

ilb, look at the asking price attached to Nash. Ryan’s asking price is rumored to be much less. Basically, a 2nd line center and some picks ought to get Ryan done. Columbus wants picks, a forward, and at least two cornerstone pieces.

  49. The only problem getting ryan is the ducks want stepan in the package and the rangers have him as a untouchable. The way things are as of today, the rangers probably won’t get neither ryan or Nash.

  50. Tomg- at some point someone will have to interject and tell Howson to do what’s right for the team. Because the uglier it gets, the less they’ll get in return.

  51. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

tomg, I never saw anywhere that Nash asked that Howson be fired, but I agree with the rest of your sentiment. If Nash wants out, he can’t limit the market and be upset when a deal doesn’t materialize.

  52. Rick Nash knew what he was doing when he signed his contract, right? Howser doesn’t have to trade him….

he hoswer’d when he admitted Nash asked to be traded….

This whole thing stinks like a heaping pile of heatley…

  53. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

tomg, I agree with you on Stepan/Ryan. I’d be really on the fence about that swap. I really like Stepan. If the Rangers made that deal, they would have to be very aggressive in replacing their prospect pool at center.

Also, your comment is probably awaiting moderation because you had two links. Usually it blocks things for that.

ilb, Howson can still have Nash play. It’s a game of chicken. He wants to show Nash that he won’t be bullied into accepting just whatever he can get and he wants Nash to be the one to blink and open up the trade market.

  54. Doodie,
I read that on the columbus dispatch right after the trading dead line was over. If you don’t believe me, ask carp, I think he knows about it also. It was written by the jackets beat writer portizine or however you spell his name.

  55. I like Hagelin’s speed but I don’t think he’s better than a 3rd-line forward. I think his value right now is higher than it will ever be and it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Rangers to use that to their advantage. I hope I’m wrong about this and Hagelin turns out to be a superstar but I just don’t see it.

  56. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

BTW, is there a player that is mentioned as having value for trades that has done less than JVR? He had that one good playoff run and has basically done nothing else, yet for some reason he has a ton of value.

  57. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

ha, thanks for pointing that out.

I’ll look into Portzline’s column on that.

  58. Errrrr….Yup, Hagelin is a third liner who’s value peaked before the start of last season. We should have a got a second rounder for him. But, now, it is too late.

  59. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

tomg, exactly. I understand that he was a force in those playoffs, but holy carcillo has nobody learned anything from the follies of the past? Even the recent past. Joel Ward, anyone??

  60. I would never take a goalie in the first round….Goalies are always a crapshoot….

Would anyone take Al Montoya again, anyone?

  61. Lloyd knows nothing about hockey but this URL. I think I typed a bad word and I was barred.

oh yea. He hates Dubi too.

    Have I left anything out????????????????

  62. Speaking of Montoya, I wonder where he ends up. UFA, if I’m not mistaken.

JVR is still young. Only has three years of experience. Last year was an off year due to injury, but I get why he has so much value.

That being said, *if” Nash agrees to go to the Flyers, it’s going to take more than JVR, BOB & a first round pick.

  63. NYR_FAN

the reason Montoya was drafted so high was because of the performance he put on for Team USA, which is exactly the same reason the Russian kid is going in the 1st round.

If the Rangers want a goalie, take one in 4th round. Wasting a 1st rounder on a goalie is simply a waste of an asset when we have the best goalie in the world who is only 30 years old…

  64. anyway, for the people who can’t bear to part with anyone who’s ever worn a Ranger jersey:

Carl Hagelin shouldn’t be the reason you don’t trade for Rick Nash (or Bobby Ryan for that matter).

  65. Agree on that, Lloyd. Also, I’d be willing to include Stepan in Ryan’s trade. Not for Nash.

  66. ilb:

the rough thing about parting with Stepan is, seriously, what centers are left on this team?

  67. Please forgive the shameless plug, but after a lot of hard work and research, I have posted my 2012 Draft Previews at Rangers Ramblings http://www.rangerramblings.com/category/2012-nhl-draft/. This link will take you directly to all of my 2012 Draft articles. I posted a Mock Draft for the first two rounds of the NHL Draft, Rangers Draft Previews for the first four rounds, and there is a historical look at the Rangers drafting this late in the first round.

  68. I wouldn’t trade Stepan for Ryan….Stepan has 70-80 point potential…and, he has a great career ahead of him…

The Ducks would be fools not to make that trade if Slats was really offering him….

Hagelin is another story….in the right package, I think he can be part of a deal for Ryan…

Why are the Quacks giving on Ryan again? Has to be some reason that isn’t public….

  69. why is everyone so bent on NOT including Stepan. is he faster than Ryan? No, is he bigger than Ryan? No. can he put more goals in the net than Ryan? No. if we can get a Ryan for a package that could include, Delzotto, Stepan, AA and a prospect. wouldn’t you. There’s also a rumor that San Jose would be willing to move Ryan Clowe for a top 6 and a pick. Dubi and the 28th for Clowe. wouldn’t you do it? how about signing Gaustad for the 3rd line centr and have a Haglin and Clowe on the wings. Sign Justin Schultz and then maybe a Dustin Penner. Listen, NYR got pushed around way to much this post seasin with not alot of push back. not only does this team need to score nmore but also be tougher. Ryan, Gaustad, Penner add that. Bring up JT Miller to compete for Stepans spot. Why not?
    Richards, Kreider, Ryan
    JT Miller, Cally Penner
    Gaustad, Haglin Clowe
    Boyle Rupp, Prust

    Girardi, MCD
    Staal Schultz
    Erixon, McIlwrath

    Why Not?

  70. “According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, the Rangers are not trading Marc Staal, Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh, along with Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi and Henrik Lundqvist, in a deal to acquire more scoring.”

  71. I always felt Dubinsky was better suited on the wing, Lloyd. AA has yet to prove he can be a second line center. At the moment he is a better fit on a third. Yes, second line center becomes an issue. Unless they have someone else in mind.

  72. How far off would Anisimov/Dubinsky, Erixon, Thomas, Miller and a 1st rounder be for Bobby Ryan?

  73. if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s to treat anything Larry Brooks says as gospel truth

  74. oleo:

you’re trading one mediocre pro and a bunch of minor leaguers. I don’t think that gets it done.

  75. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

NYR_Fan, only goaltenders are a crapshoot? Every player is a crap shoot. Sure, Montoya didn’t pan out, but Fuhr, Barrasso, Kolzig, Giguere, Brodeur, Ward, and Fleury have won Cup(s) and/or a Vezina and/or are in the HOF or are HOF bound. Luongo hasn’t ever won a Vezina but probably should have in 2007 when Brodeur won it based on reputation.

Lehtonen, Schneider, Price, Rask, all look to be very solid goaltenders who will eventually contend for some hardware, especially the latter three.

Dubnyk, Bernier, Varlamov, are all promising prospects who have a shot at eventually being a top 15 goaltender, especially the latter two.

Campbell and Visentin are the last two first-round drafted goaltenders and both still show a lot of promise, although a lot of the luster has come off of Campbell. But Visentin looks like he is legit.

  76. “Anisimov/Dubinsky, Erixon, Thomas, Miller and a 1st rounder”

and we’re left naked again! bye bye farm!

  77. Doodie, you make a compelling case….

Yet, the opposite end of the spectrum tells you something else….

    Lunqvist 8th rounder

    Quick 3rd rounder

    Rinne 8th rounder

  78. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

You pointed out Montoya in 2004, what about Korpikoski from the same year? He was picked thirteen spots later and is just as much of a scrub. It’s all a crap shoot. Even guys that are supposed to be can’t miss sometimes miss. My favorite example is poor Pat Falloon. He was supposed to be a beast, and instead he is just a footnote sandwiched between Lindros and Niedermayer. Or Patrik Stefan. Or Alexandre Daigle. Or Alexei Yashin. These were all can’t miss guys. Even Pavel Brendl and Jamie Lundmark were supposed to be studs.

We would no longer have a top farm system, correct, but it wouldn’t be depleted. You would still have Kreider, McIlrath, Fast, St. Croix, Hrivik plus whomever we drafted this weekend. Also the Rangers have no impending UFAs after this season which means very little spots for prospects anyway.

The team would still be very young, with a core in tact and a cap situation where none of those players will be forced to leave any time soon, so no trading all those prospects would not worry me one bit

  80. Korpi turned out to be a pretty solid forward….maybe not the 1st line talent they thought he was going to be….Not sure ai would call him a scrub….he played on a good team this year and contributed….

    more goals than Dubinsky…for example…

  81. Did Nash just get traded to Philly?

@AdamRotter@ News: Columbus Acquires Sergei Bobrovsky From Philly on.sny.tv/Nhz8SY

  82. Mike Smith – 5th round
    Antti Niemi – undrafted
Craig Anderson – 3rd round (drafted twice)
    Brian Elliot – 9th round
    Jaroslav Halak – 9th round
    Niklas Backstrom – undrafted

  83. 4generations 4 cups on

“Anisimov/Dubinsky, Erixon, Thomas, Miller and a 1st rounder”

Why would our entire farm be traded rather than some more full grown guys? It’s important to keep your shelves stocked.

  84. 4generations 4 cups

simple: For a team that was 6 wins away from winning the Cup, “A bird in hand is worth two in the bush”…

  85. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

    NYR_Fan:

    Zetterberg 7th rounder

    Datsyuk 6th rounder

    Chara 3rd rounder

Moulson 9th rounder (Parenteau also, but he just mooches off of Moulson and JT)

    Streit 9th round

Hornqvist 7th round (last pick of the draft)

Kim Johnsson 11th round (last pick of the draft)

St. Louis (and a ton of other players): Undrafted.

    What’s your point?

  86. CBJ will be picking in top 10 for the 11th times in 13 years! First time as second overall. How sick is that?? And they still have nothing to show for it talent wise… FIRE OWNER?

  87. 4generations 4 cups on

6 wins away from a cup? I dont understand the connotation, that we’re just going to ride into the ECF next year, inherently, because we made it this year?

You see teams like the Sharks get to these kind of levels and have severe problems breaking the threshold of being “very good” and “amazing”. I understand that it’d be nice to get Nash but for all that? Im not certain.

You can see that the Sharks didnt make it very far by splashing into a blockbuster (see: Heatley) scoring is just not all that is needed. This team has proven capable the entire season with the group we have now. We have homegrown guys that could fit right in due to the fact that we actually have good drafting right now.

I suppose i’ll wait and see.

  88. Doodie

his point is that a higher percentage of top goalies are mid and late round picks in comparison to top forwards or top d-men.

  89. Why didn’t we throw OchoCinco or Cam Talbot into a trade for Nash. I have been complaining about this since last year. I am sure they are BOTH better than Bobrovsky.

  90. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

But there is a much higher percentage of first round skaters that are busts than first round goaltenders.

  91. Oh but to follow that up, I don’t really care about getting Nash. I would prefer Robert Ryan

  92. My point is that 1st round scoring talent is directly correlated to winning the Stanley Cup in today’s NHL….1 for 1st round picks that are goalies, the correlation isn’t as strong….

Examples of 1sr round picks that have won the Cup as forwards recently:

Brown, Seguin, Kane, Malkin, SAVE DETROIT, Getzalf, Staal, Lecavalier….

    Goalies:

Quick, Thomas, Niemi, *Fleury, Osgood, Giguere*, Ward*, Ha-Vee-Boo-Lin

  93. 4generations 4 cups

You made my point for me. In order to get Heatley, the Sharks had to get rid of Cheechoo and Michalek, both key contributors to their previous season. They weakened their team in order to get Heatley, which is why there wasn’t much of an improvement.

By trading prospects and only 1 player from the current team you inherently are taking the team from last season, getting rid of Anisimov or Dubinsky and adding Bobby Ryan.

The object is to take the team that was 6 wins away from the cup, subtract a 3rd liner and a 4th liner (Mitchell) and add a 1st and 2nd liner (Whitney) or 3rd liner (Gaustad) or whomever they see fit.

You don’t dissemble your young current NHLers when you have prospects to move instead.

  94. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

And of guys with starting jobs in the NHL right now, MAF, Price, Ward, Rask, Schneider (depending on trade), Lehtonen, and Varlamov were all first round choices. They make up almost 40% of the goaltenders drafted in the first round in the last 10 years.

I guarantee you that 40% of forwards taken in the first round in the last 10 years aren’t top 6 forwards, and that 40% of defensemen aren’t top 3 defensemen. I chose the half point of a roster because the goaltenders need to be in the top half of a goaltending roster.

That’s even ignoring the fact that Bernier and Dubnyk could grow into starters, and counting two goaltenders who were recently drafted and so are still early in their development cycle. If you split the difference on Bernier and one of the two recent draftees (probably Visentin), that ups the percentage to 50%.

  95. wow, rumor is 2 4th and a 2nd for Bobrovsky. Howson is a moron, no wonder the CBJ’s are a terrible franchise and why Holmgren likes dealing with them.

  96. Maybe I am oversimplifying it but…

There are more forwards available than d-men or goalies. So, in terms of a distribution of players, there stands to be more very good forwards available, than good goalies, for example…You inherently have a wider range of players to choose from if you pick from the group of forwards, that’s what makes it a challenge….

  97. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

NYR Fan, all of those forwards you listed were taken much higher in the first round than we are looking at this year. Besides Brown (13) and Getzlaf (19), both of whom were from the deepest first round draft of all time (goddamn you Hugh Jessiman), all of the guys you listed were first or second overall selections.

  98. Howson, the same guy who wants Gretzky, Kurri and Coffey for Rick Nash, just got fleeced in order to land Sergei Bobrovksy.

  99. why the hell does anyone want Sergei Bobrovsky

    ***

    Because he’s not Steve Mason

  100. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

NYR_Fan, that point you just made supports my argument. There are less good goaltenders to choose from, so the likelihood of selecting one that pans out is higher. A wider selection of forwards makes it more likely that you get one that doesn’t become a top player.

  101. Howson had a surplus of picks. This is a small deal. I could see Howson using Bobrovsky as part of a package for Bernier in L.A.

  102. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Eh, I think Bob is a decent goaltender. I think the worst thing they ever did was panic-yank him after his first playoff game. He doesn’t seem to have ever recovered from that. Getting shelled in Columbus won’t help that, but not having the Philly fans ready to murder you the second you give up a bad goal will allow him to maybe work through it.

  103. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

I’m not saying that if you pick a guy in the first round who isn’t worthy of a first round selection he will transform into a good player. I’m just saying that if the guy looks like he will become a good goaltender, there is no reason not to take him if the other available players are just high floor, low ceiling guys.

  104. I doubt that LA has any interest in acquiring BOB. If they trade Bernier, which they’ll have to, it will be a similar deal, just for draft picks. They’ll just sign a vet backup.

It’s not the worst move in the world for the Jackets. He’s a decent goalie. Still really young.

  105. Doodie,

    6 of 1. Half dozen of another….

There’s also a better chance that there no top goalies available at all….than no top forwards available at all….

  106. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

And I happen to think Subban will eventually be a quality starter in this league. Likewise for Vasilevski. Maybe even Danske, but I’m less certain about him.

And obviously, as with all players, this assumes health. And health issues can happen to goaltending prospects (Blackburn) or skaters (Cherepanov).

  107. 6 hours before The Gladiators/Slaves Market will open. Rangers, irrelevant merchants, at this flesh commodities exchange’s 28 raw, will do peanuts pickups. The only mystery remains, who will come out loser in a battle of wills between the Mother of All Jerks (Howson) and Cigars’ King of Trades (Slats).

  108. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

NYR_Fan, yes, but that depends on the draft class. In this class, I think there are two goaltenders that are worth late first round selections and a third worth an early 2nd rounder.

Last year there were no goaltenders worth a first rounder.

  109. I’m going to go back to what I said prior to the trade deadline when all those ludicrous rumors about Nash’s asking price were swirling. Howson is playing a game. He has zero intention of trading Nash and is simply throwing out an obscenely high asking price on the off chance some other GM is dumb enough to play with him.

  110. Lots of good discussion today. This place is on fire for it being the offseason.

    *RIGGED*

  111. So if someone plays along and offers him what he is asking, he’ll trade him? Despite having zero intention of trading him? Doesn’t compute.

  112. I think Nash is as good as gone….Barring a new management, and even then it’s a long shot.

  113. “But there is a much higher percentage of first round skaters that are busts than first round goaltenders”.

Not true at all. There are more busts, but not percentage. Let’s look at a few years worth of 1st and 2nd round goalie selections shall we?

2002: (1) Kari Lehtonen, Cam Ward, Hannu Toivonen, (2) Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, Josh Harding, David LeNeveu, Maxime Daigneault
    2003: (1) Marc-Andre Fleury, (2) Corey Crawford, Jim Howard
2004: (1) Al Montoya, Devan Dubnyk, Marek Schwarz, Cory Schneider, (2) David Shantz, Justin Peters
2005: (1) Tuukka Rask, (2) Tyler Plante, Jeff Frazee, Ondrej Pavelec, Pier-Olivier Pelletier
2006: (1) Jonathan Bernier, Riku Helenius, Semyon Varlamov, Leland Irving, (2) Michal Neuvirth, Jhonas Enroth,
2007: (1) None, (2) Joel Gistedt, Antoine Lafleur, Trevor Cann, Jeremy Smith
2008: (1) Chet Pickard, Thomas McCollum (2) Jakob Markstrom, Jake Allen, Tyler Beskorowany, Peter Delmas
2009: (1) None, (2) Mikko Koskinen, Robin Lehner

16 of the 39 are either starters or backups in the NHL. 3 of the 39 are all-stars. 8 of which are considered “above average” starters. 12 of the 39 are busts. 6 of the remaining 23 are considered high end prospects. The rest are undecided.

In the 8 years of this study, 41% of goalies have established themselves in the NHL with a maximum of 69% “establishment rate. 7.7% of them became all-stars and 21% have became above average goalies. 31% are busts

Just by observing, the chance of drafting a successful goalie in the first two rounds is much much harder than a skater in those two rounds…

  114. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Every year, I give an opinion (and I forget who it is who mocks it) over whether the Rangers blew it. I’ve said they’ve blown in 2011, 2010, and 2006. In 2009, Kreider was the third highest player remaining on my board when they picked him, so it wasn’t too bad (although he has admittedly done significantly better than the two I had above him). In 2008, I was OK with Del Zotto as a player but questioned the pick after going with Staal and Sanguinetti in 05-06, although I hated the Sanguinetti pick and took MDZ’s selection as a mea culpa on Sanguinetti.

  118. czechthemout!!!! on

Howson gets fleeced again by the Flyers. The guy has to have a man crush on Holmgren. How else can one explain what he is doing.

  119. “…I’ve always admired Gord Clark, who is now working for the Rangers. If you look at the drafts he orchestrated with the Islanders, that would have been a great team — if it hadn’t been for Mike Milbury.

Detroit’s machine … they’re all on the same page, and that’s the key with Detroit. They don’t always have a first-round pick, but they always know what they’re looking for and they don’t waste any time on squabbling.

Montreal has a done a good job, too, in the time Trevor Timmins has been there…”

  120. they got a backup goalie for three relatively high picks. yeah, great move for Columbus.

  121. Doodie

if you take out the 1st round, then you’re argument is further blown due to the fact that so few goalies are drafted in the 1st round.

One bust for a goalie is like 10 busts for a skater and you simply don’t get 10 skaters busting in the 1st round anymore…

  122. Bobrovsky might even be a third string goalie. He is a great fit for the Capitals!

  123. Simply put, if you have a 1st round pick, the goalie you select is likely to be worse than the skater you could have selected…

The best course of action for the Rangers is to draft a goalie in the later rounds every single year from now until you hit on one and continuously look at Europe and the NCAA for late bloomers…

  124. iWicky "Rupp Yours!!!" on

There was an article that Detroit is targeting prust but afraid he could command up to 3 mil on the open market…wow

  125. I could see that happening. Dude is a GOOD player and a real leader. Many teams would love to have him. It’s a shame that he’s less valuable as a Ranger than on another team. Isn’t he from Ontario? Maybe he heads back there.

  126. Manny:

Going to be rough when Washington fans realize Holtby is Neuvirth 2.0

  127. Good point, Lloyd. I was just making a similar joke to my Caps fan friends. One in particular is a blind idiot and just thinks that Holtby could have won the Vezina last season.

  128. Matty"DepthNeeded"Boy on

Guys, this may sound really stupid. Ok, it does sound really stupid. I was sitting thinking why would anyone want Bobrovsky from Philly. That goaltender with the ‘B’ name. The guy with the lengthy burdensome contract that will be a weight for Philly for many years to come. The universe guy, etc. Really wanted Philly to be stuck with him for years, because no matter who they get, the guy doesn’t fit with them at all……………..

Then, I realize it was ‘Bob’. Not Bryzgalov. Bob, their spotty back up. Yes, a kid, but spotty at best.

Few, was almost thinking Philly got out of a ridiculous predicament their GM got them into. Nope, they will suffer for years with the Bryzgalov mistake. Suffer away!!!!!!!!!!

  129. Matty"DepthNeeded"Boy on

Gotta hope Prust’s love of NYR rules. He would be a bigger than expected loss. Heart and soul. Heart and soul.

Sometimes Sather drives a bargain out the door. Hope it doesn’t happen this time. He’s too important.

  130. czechthemout!!!! on

It was an absolute fleecing. Bob sucks! He is not the answer in any way shape or form. At best, he will be a backup. How can you build a team if you trade away so many draft picks. Just terrible.

  131. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

oleo, that reasoning is totally fallacious. My point is that goaltenders who are ranked highly enough that a first round selection is used on them typically pan out more often than skaters in a similar position.

  132. @AdamRotter@ Buzz: The Rangers Interest In Keith Yandle

    **************

No thank you. Only good thing he does is set up Gaborik for easy goals.

  133. Replacement level goaltending would have been an improvement for the Jackets. And that’s probably a lot easier to find on the FA market than having to trade away picks. Although Bob has a low hurdle to clear in that he just doesn’t have to be as bad as Steve Mason. Either way, the 45th (and picks proximate to that selection) pick in most drafts hasn’t exactly been a treasure trove of impact players. And the percentage of 4th rounders that even make it to NHL is pretty small.

  134. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

The asking price for Yandle is apparently a center. I’d gladly move Dubinsky or Anisimov for Keith Yandle. Maybe Maloney wants one of his guys for Yandle?

  135. i would take yandle in a heartbeat. so underated and dubi contract would be ideal going back

  136. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

eric, the problem is, I think it’s a salary shed move by the Coyotes, and Dubi doesn’t really afford them much relief. Artie would be more enticing.

Honestly, I’d swap Anisimov for Yandle in a hot second.

  137. Anisimov for Yandle is essentially getting Yandle for nothing. You do it in a heartbeat.

  138. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

CTB, I’m not so sure it would have been easy for CBJ to get replacement level goaltending on the FA market. Forget that it would be hard to attract a FA goaltender there because the suck so hard, who they hell is available? Hedberg? Montoya? Huet?

    Bobrovsky at least has upside.

  146. I am not sure it was offsides, I am just saying the Ref with the whistle thought it was.

  147. It was clearly offsides. 100%. If it was called against my team, I wouldnt have had a complaint.

  148. not sure about this year’s team, but the Greeks tend to play a very frustrating style, similar to the Rangers.

Defend, defend, defend and then get that 1 goal.

  149. Clearly Tiki? What angle did you see it from? I am watching online so I will admit it gets a bit blurry. Like bigfoot.

  150. Yea, Manny. Im serious. Youre probably watching on espn3, and that quality isnt that good. Im watching on HD 65″ TV. It was a side angle that showed the guy half a body length behind the last defender.

  151. That’s a big TV. My Bigfoot analogy was totally appropriate. I did NOT get that angle. Only some weird 45 Degree angle from 300 ft. (300 metres) away.

  152. oleo, thats how the Greeks won the 2004 Euros. Thats why I was stupefied when Doodie called Greece “bad at football.” This is their style of play. Defense, fouls, and get 1 goal on a rare counter.

  153. why on Earth would the Rangers trade Stepan for Keith Yandle?

Sure, Yandle is a very good player, but we have no need for him at all. Our defense is perfectly fine as is…

  154. Not exactly the same thing, but if that’s the measure of bad football, u could call this year’s Rangers bad at hockey. Struggle to score, cant score on PP, play defense, great goaltending, great PK, score just enough to win.

  155. i think a better analogy of the Greeks are the trap era Devils or when the Rangers play prevent defense.

  156. oleo, i disagree. Greeks allow the other team into their final third and allow them possession and opportunities, like the Rangers. NYR allow teams into their zone, get peppered with shots which the Rangers block or #30 stops.

  157. LOL @ Coyotes giving up Yandle for Anisimov. Hard to imagine why Maloney would sign him to a five-year deal then trade him a year later, but emergence of OEL and financial problems could probably explain it. Don’t see Rangers in that mix given how well McDonagh and Del Zotto played this year.

  158. Why trade for a lefty Yandle when you can just sign Schultz? I could see this trade if no Schultz, but he reminds me of MDZ. They both brainfart, and Yandle makes 3 times the $$$. No Way. Schultz.

  159. If Yandle gets dealt, say goodbye to Shane Doan. That guy is gonna walk if the Yotes start selling off good players.

  160. Rangers don’t have a PP point man and don’t have a legitimate scoring threat on defense. If Phoenix would part with him for Artem Anisimov, you do it.

  161. Plus you have to assume the Yotes are looking for wingers, considering Doan and Whitney may not return. They just traded for Vermette and they have Hanzal and Gordon returning at center.

  162. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Because Schultz is going to sign in Detroit. They have a ton of money and plenty of open roster spots on D.

  163. CW — if you saw Yandle play more, you’d eat those words with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Remember Gilroy? Yandle is unreal … super athletic with size, puck-mover and PPQB … and PROVEN, all at around $5 mil a year.

Lloyd — that’s the thing … Phoenix WON’T trade Yandlebaum for Anisimov, ever.

  164. How is Yandle a major upgrade over Del Zotto? He is older, more expensive, and with the exception of one season, scores only slightly more. Del Zotto is still getting better. If it was Karlsson, well duh. Otherwise, I am not really seeing it.

  165. “Because Schultz is going to sign in Detroit. They have a ton of money and plenty of open roster spots on D.”

the money is exactly the same regardless of what team he chooses.

  166. Greece defending like this and hoping to score on the counter attack with Samaras is like the Rangers collapsing in front of the net and trying to spring Mike Rupp on breakaways.

  167. Surprise. I can’t believe that Greece gave up a goal playing this amazing system.

  168. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Wow, what a dreadful display by the Greeks there. Just, wow.

  169. Yandle is a 50+ point d-man. How many of those do the Rangers have right now?

  170. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

oleo, no it is not the same. The base contract has a max of 925k with a 10% signing bonus per year, but he is free to negotiate performance bonuses.

  171. Yandle has 97 total hits over 3 seasons. Yeah, he will fit right in with this team.

  172. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Not everyone will be willing to throw almost 3 million in performance bonuses at him. It would make his contract like 4 million bucks for a guy who has never skated a single professional game. Detroit can make that offer. The Rangers cannot.

  173. Yandle has as many 50-point seasons as Dubinsky, so you’ve just called Dubinsky a 50-point forward there I think, Lloyd…

  174. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Dan, God forbid the Rangers get a player that has a different skillset than all of their others! Not everyone has to be a hitter.

  175. I watched Yandle give a puck to Gaborik right in the crease for no good reason. He has just as many brainfarts as MDZ for 3 times the price.

  176. If he came to the Rangers, he would be Rosival 2.0. Rangers #1 whipping boy unless he scored 55 pts every season and singlehandedly fixed the power play.

  177. if you want to make Yandle a 40-point defenseman, the Rangers have a grand total of 1 defenseman on the roster who’s cracked that number. and Del Zotto isn’t a power play quarterback. but you’re right, let’s sit tight with nothing but checking forwards and defenseman. a lot of teams win stanley cups that way.

  178. Yandle is obviously a very good player and anyone who judges him based on one turnover is just like the idiots here who judge Gaborik based on his blunder against Washington.

The issue here is that Yandle only brings a marginal improvement over what we have now so why would we give up Stepan for that? and then how do we replace Stepan?

  179. Doodie, because of the year Schultz was drafted, his base salary is $875k. Performance bonuses are capped too, plus the team can only negotiate one type of those, not the other. So the difference wouldn’t be that much, if any.

  180. I am all for adding talent to the Rangers. The identity of this team is physical. Yandle is not. He doesn’t fit the type of player the Rangers have targeted the last few seasons. He can score 40 – 50 pts, but weak physical play will doom him to live in the Torts dog house. I am not sure the power play is fixed by one player as much as it is fixed by player movement.

  181. Yandle would become our best offensive defenseman, no doubt. The issue is he would also become, by a wide margin, the highest paid defenseman on the team. And #4 highest paid on the team overall. Good luck resigning any of our young guns to a reasonable contract when that time arrives. The issue with Yandle is that he is overpaid. Phoenix may be in financial problem, but they also may not be able to get to the floor numbers.

  182. Why didn’t the Blue Jackets attempt to get Tim Thomas? I am sure he would have enjoyed the move to the heartland, they will have the cap space and it immediately makes your team much better.

  183. ilb,

all fair points. I’m not thrilled with the $5.25 million for the next four years and it’s a bit of a gamble to hope that Yandle becomes the weapon the Rangers have lacked for the last umpteen years. it’s tough but I think he’d be a nice piece to add and I think he goes a long way to filling holes that may not be fillable by anyone on the roster.

also, does the addition of Yandle make Del Zotto expendable?

  195. hahaha, Manny! I dont give a carcillo how good his product was, his product couldve been the cure to cancer and I wouldnt give a carcillo!!

    Manny + Tiki = Vibin’

Cant believe the freaking Flyers are still trying to put together a deal for Nash or Ryan and Rangers appear to be out of the mix. Snyder stays under the cap with smoke, mirrors and some good old fashioned Bettman food stamps assistance. Guess Philthy still thinks their D is good enough.
Uncle Slats, please draft Stefan Matteau, Matteau, Matteau!!!

  207. Czechthemout!!! on

I don’t know what it would cost but this Matt Dumba kid will be an absolute star! I hope they at least check into it. Yes, I know it’s a long shot of a thought.

  208. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

CTO, Dumba looks like a total boom or bust player. He is either going to be a total star or he is just going to completely fizzle. This is not a 2nd pairing guy.

  209. Have faith in Clark. He is a great draftsman. I like Sammualson’s kid if he falls far enough. We could use his snarl.

  210. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

I’m not crazy about Matteau. He’s just another high floor, low ceiling guy.

  211. I haven’t seen JT Miller but I hear good things. Let’s hope he can score.

I hear some good things about Fogarty too.

  212. Czechthemout!!! on

    Doodie

Who do you like for the Rangers?

I happen to like Kerdiles,Koekkek, and a trade up if possible for Gregorienko if he slides towards 20.

  213. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

cw, he has been director of player personnel since 2005. In that time, their first round picks are Staal (excellent), Sanguinetti (total bust), Cherepanov (unfortunate, but I loved the pick), MDZ (up and down), Kreider (looking incredibly promising), McIlrath (jury still out but looking closer to bust than success), and JT Miller. It’s way too early to tell on Miller, but I don’t like this pick either because I think he will just become a solid 3rd liner, which was a waste of the pickat 15. So it’s not a perfect record, but it is definitely pretty good.

Where he really makes his bones though is after the first round. He has made some really excellent picks there: Sauer, Pyatt, Anisimov, Hagelin, Stepan, Grachev (at the time I loved the pick), Roman Horak, Christian Thomas, Jesper Fast, and anybody beyond that is still too green to speak about. Still, that, to me, is more impressive than his first round record.

  214. Grigorenko would be nice, he looked very mature at WJC, but, honestly, I don’t think it will happened by any chance and means. Too many pro scouts saw the same.

  215. Sitting at 28 row in a waiting line, we are in a relative dark over there. Pretty unpredictable, so, all what left is just few hours to wait and we will see…

  216. I think one mistake people seem to make is that a player picked in the top half of the first round should automatically be a top six forward, top 3 defense. After the first 5 picks, it is up in the air in most drafts. Usually, the first round means they have a better chance of making it in the NHL, but doesn’t really tell you where they would make it. I still think McIlrath will be a solid 3 or 4 D man in a few more years. The big guys just take a little longer. Chara was a mess when he first came into the league. Awkward and clumsy. Same for Pronger. So much so that both of their original teams traded them before the players grew into themselves. Don’t think McIlrath is either player, at all. I do think he will be a solid guy on the back line for a decade.

  217. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

CTO, I would move up for Grigorenko if he fell to 12. I think in terms of talent, he is a top 5 player in the draft, plus he is a center, which we don’t really have any depth at in terms of a top two beyond Stepan.

I love Koekkoek. I don’t even care how ridiculous that sentence looks or you would think it sounds if you didn’t know how to pronounce his name properly.

If Koekkoek is gone, I’d be happy taking either Subban or Vasilevski. Sure, we have Lundqvist, but both of these guys (especially Subban) would benefit from a long apprenticeship. Then, in 5 years from now, these guys can be in a platoon with Hank to keep Hank fresh as his body starts to wear down from his grinding butterfly style.

If all those guys are gone, I’d be happy with Mike Matheson.

I don’t like Kerdiles much, but if the other guys are all gone, he isn’t a bad consolation prize.cI’d also consider Jarrod Maidens. Honestly, I would consider trading down if I could if the other guys were gone. If the other guys and Kerdiles or Maidens are gone, I would DEFINITELY look to trade down, and then target at least one total boom or bust player in the second round, like Danill Zharkov, Gemels Smith, or Andreas Athansiou, even if that is a complete reach, just to make sure you get him.

  218. Czechthemout!!! on

Mcilrath is much closer to bust status than a solid 3-4 dman. He may develop in two or three more years into a 5-6 dman. Not at all impressive when you draft a guy at # 10 in a strong draft. Also, his skill set is nowhere near what you would consider a 3-4 to be. Just look at what we have @ 3-4 now. Mcilrath doesn’t even come close to the skill set of MdZ or Staal and never will. His skating is not their either. Too bad really.

  219. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Alright, I’m headed home. See you guys in about an hour to discuss the happenings.

Carp, will we get an “It’s Go Time!” thread?

  220. Czechthemout!!! on

    Doodie

Not at all a fan of drafting a goalie in the first round. Even if at 28. Goalies develop differently and very few that are drafted in the first round ever justify getting drafted there. I would look at a goalie at the end of round two. the best goalie in franchise history is a second round pick. The second is a seventh round pick. The third wasn’t drafted and the fourth was a fourth round pick.

Many good to great players get picked late in the first round. Perry,Richards,Giroux and many others. They need to pick well here. And this drafts not as weak as you are being le to believe. A lot of injuries and slightly off years have caused this draft to be marginalized.

  221. His skill set is Sauer. Never said he was anything like the other two. He isn’t even close to a bust. It took Sauer 3 seasons of AHL before he was ready to be a Ranger. Sauer was easily a top 4 player for the Rangers and they really missed him in the playoffs. I fully expect McIlrath to take two years with the Whale before he is ready. Will he pop 30 or more points? I would be surprised if he scored 15. Regardless, when he makes the team, he will work his way up from the third to the second pair and be there for years. Heck, Girardi spent 1-1/2 years in Hartford before he came up. Now he is a first pair D and all-star. Just because he was picked in the first half of the first round doesn’t mean that he should be a first pair all-star automatically. It just means that he should have a better chance at making the NHL than guys picked in the later rounds.

  222. Czechthemout!!! on

    Dan

In my opinion, he is not even close to Sauer. Sauer is a better passer and by far a better skater. It’s too bad he didn’t play in the playoffs. And you are right, we sure missed him. Sauer played 3 years in Hartford because he couldn’t stay healthy and did née some time. But again, Sauer was a second round pick and not drafted in the top ten of a strong draft. You get your elite players in the top ten and Mcilrath by Clark’s own words was a reach for a need to get a tough guy to protect their skill guys. Doesn’t it also trouble you a bit that you never hear his name mentioned as a player other teams covet from the Ranger? It tells me that he has virtually zero trade value around the league.

Just so you know Dan, I hope you’re right and I am wrong. We will see in the next few years.

  223. McIlrath is a project, but I think he is a safe project. I would never compare him the Sauer of today because he isn’t finished with development. However, like Sauer, he is a defensive D. Admittedly, he need to improve footwork, but that is common for big guys. I am not saying he is a lock. He is a prospect, but I think he is closer to player than bust. Could bust, but I think the Rangers have had the long view in place the entire time concerning McIlrath.

I know he was a top ten, but I am always of the opinion that after 5 or 6, things get really fuzzy and unpredictable. In some drafts, it gets that way after 2 or 3. They reached for a need, but they made what they felt was a safe reach, not a gamble.

Still, anything can happen. I think one of the better write-ups on McIlrath for this year was done by The Prospect Park: http://theprospectpark.blogspot.com/2012/06/looking-back-in-order-to-look-forward.html

  224. I am not a huge fan of the HF Boards, but I thought this was a very list of draft misconceptions. He says top 10 for point #2, but I would be more inclined to say 5 or 6.

  225. You guys are amazing! I have not been around as much since the playoffs. As much passion and intensity here as ever. What a cool blog..

I agree that the draft is a crap shoot and there are tons of kids who NEVER live up to the hype.

But, ever since gordie clarke took over the draft and player development, we have really done well. I have total faith in the organ-eye-zation now to get the pieces we need to take the next step..

I have never been as excited about the future for the Rangers as I am right now…

  241. I have a feeling the flyers will get ryan. He is from Cherry Hill, the next town east of philly in New jersey and where he wants to go.

  242. Czech

notice how all these teams are trading for 2013 picks and not for picks in this years draft. Nathan MacKinnon, the #1 overall pick in next years draft is supposed to be best player drafted since Crosby.

  243. Czechthemout!!! on

    Oleo

I don’t disagree. I am just saying that they said the same thing last year.

  244. Doodie Machetto on

oleo, that’s just one player. But yes, your sentiment is correct regarding 2013 being deep, even if the reason you listed is irrelevant.

  245. Doodie, yes that point about about MacKinnon is irrelevant, but true nonetheless…

  246. wow

brandon sutter is great on draws and underated offensively. great deal. sutter will thrive in 3 hole for pens.

    staal=beast

  247. bull dog line on

Rangers will take Tanner Pearson in the first, and Zach Stepan ( Dereks cousin) in the 2nd.

  248. Doodie Machetto on

I think Stamkos was hyped as much as McKinnon is. Tarvares was hyped too but had some (crazy and incorrect) detractors.

  249. would be scary if Parise went to Pittsburgh though. I think i’d rather have in NJ

  250. for those asking no way rangers would have gotten staal. pens not moving him in division

  251. Hot damn, Canes taking the “Staals are brothers” thing to a WHOLE nother level.

  252. Doodie Machetto on

This is nothing like what Lombardi did in LA. Shero is not Lombardi. He is Holgren. He traded the proven young center for the 8th overall pick (same pick even!) and two prospects. You cannot make a straight-faced argument that Pittsburgh will be better next year as a result.

  253. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

I say trade marc to carolina so they have all 4 brothers in the fold

  254. I wouldn’t really call Brandon Sutter a prospect, Doodie. He’s been in the league for four years.

  255. Parise to the Pens? What is Pierre smoking? Even with clearing Staal’s contract, they still have to sign Skid and Malkinstein…

  256. Doodie Machetto on

And the prospect they are getting in return is no Brayden Schenn, and the guy they drafted is no Sean Coutourier.

  257. because parise knows he has a much better chance of winning the cup with the Pens than the rangers.

  258. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t get why everyone is thinking the Pens are so much better. They are unquestionably worse now than they were an hour ago.

  259. Doodie Machetto on

LW, I rephrased it. I didn’t feel like drawing out the whole deal to spell out Sutter=Simmonds in the anology.

  260. Doodie Machetto on

I’m nervous for when Marc is UFA. Gonna be awfully tempting to go play with his two brothers. Please note I’m ignoring JAred, who sucks.

  261. brandon sutter will thrive in a 3rd line role has a checking center beyond skid and gino. i like this move for pens. the free up cap space they will do something with.

ray shero i hate to say it knows whats hes doing

  262. Paul in sunrise on

So far three trades. All would have been guys would not have minded on NYR. Oh well. Slats has something else in mind. Ryan Nash parise?

  263. if bobby ryan goes to phil sather will add more to nash deal.

again i will say it if parise goes to pitt somehow someway and ryan is in phil WE THE RANGERS ARE SCREWED

  264. paul

throw out staal to the rangers IT WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. yes we would like him but it wasnt realistic

  265. bull dog line on

    I agree with Doodie,
I do not like this trade for Pitt. Carolina got the best player.

  266. Doodie Machetto on

Crap. One down. But now I’m working the phones hard for Forsberg/Grigorenko.

  267. Czechthemout!!! on

Glen, trade up with McPhee and draft Forseburg. 28,59 and next years 2nd and Thomas.

  268. Doodie Machetto on

Simmonds was underrated. And Schenn was a much better prospect than the defensemen they got. And Coutourier was a much better pick than the guy the Pens took.

  269. Rangers are going to draft a goalie. Probably the Russian one. He will come over when hank is 35

  270. OK, now I lost interest. All my “worth it” gone…as expected. Nothing to watch and hope for, not to mention “to write home about”. Not more bulldog trade under rug either tonight. Yawn.

  271. Doodie Machetto on

Still a lot of good players left in the draft, but the two who I thought would be most likely to slip to a place where the Rangers could trade up to get them have been taken.

  272. Hi guys, been away for 48 hours now since the tough news. Again, thanks for your best wishes. Anyways I think Pittsburgh certainly made a good deal. They were classy in the way they sent Staal off too. Also, if the Flyers do get Ryan, Sather will be forced to make a move. We may be in trouble if he doesnt.

  273. jesus, new post already. this one is big as the …

TSN front page has pic of oilers…guy in suit next to Tambellini is definitely an oompa loompa.

Maybe it’s the orange tint in their jerseys, but who is this loompa? and does he hyphenate too? Is it Jean Paul Ooompa-Loompa?

  274. Doodie Machetto on

Wow, that was the asking price? And the Rangers couldn’t get up to grab Forsberg or Grigorenko?

  275. Doodie Machetto on

Orr, I learned long ago not to click on any link you have in your name and/or post in the comments.

What ever happened to Kaspar. He still has my all time favorite post.

  278. I hope not sub ban. The redline guy says he is not top goalie material. Has a carcilllo glove hand and is a chaos muppet

  279. Doodie Machetto on

Tyree, Subban has a ton of athleticism and raw natural talent. Benoit Allaire can train him to focus that.

    Doodie

You can’t draft players to block other teams from drafting them. You have to draft what you need to improve your team and we need scoring.

  283. Doodie sub an is reckless, plays the puck poorly and has an awful glove. I would rather have the Ruskie or Dansk. Both would be able to take their time and develop

  284. Doodie Machetto on

CTO, sometimes the best way to do that is to build up an asset for trade. As an example, if we had a Bernier-type goaltender on our bench, we would already have Nash.

  285. Doodie Machetto on

Tyree, I disagree with you. I think Subban has the highest ceiling of the three.

  286. Drafting for the future. Most players taken today will not be heard of for 3 years. Take the best player available that fits your team. I am hoping Samuelson drops to us

  293. i’m catching up here.
staal got traded already and for just that?!?!?!
again, i can’t see/ hope that Sather doesn’t give in to howson’s insane demands.

  294. the guy I want is Sebastian Collberg and I’d guess we see our first goalie here.

  295. Man you guys are so fatalistic. I don’t think Pittsburgh got better with that trade, I think they got ok value for a great, great player in Jordan Staal. But they are not a better team now. Carolina is better but I still am not worried about them. Meanwhile you’re worried about Philly trading some of their solid young two way forwards for more offense that they really don’t need at all? Philly needs defense and goaltending, not another scorer. The Rangers need more depth on D and a bit more scoring and the latter could very easily come from within the system.

  296. nice class pittsburgh

based on pierre’s talk i guess it’s official that cindy isn’t allowed to be checked

  297. i don’t blame ’em for booing a little bit but to go on and on and on and on and on……

  325. Doodie Machetto on

Pearson is a good fit for the Kings. Not a fast player, but a fast thinking/acting player. That sums up the Kings this year pretty nicely.

  326. so if the Rangers drafted a forward, does that mean a forward is on the move?? No, they drafted him because he fits the mold of what the Rangers do in the draft.

The Rangers look to draft American kids and he was the best one available. Kid is gonna spend probably 2-3 years in college and then turn pro so this has nothing to do with possible trades

  327. I think the Devils will NEVER get over ’94. Love it! They might have just cursed their organization!

  328. wicky, fair enough. Although he;s gonna be in juniors so i don’t think it has any bearing on the big club this year.

  329. Macho tea with ms. McGill on

He will fill staals shoes when we trade him to the canes in the last year of his contract

  330. NBC’s NHL draft coverage is like watching the community access channel — epic fail

  331. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

    oleo
lol, you are a riot!!! He was rated maybe two or three spots ahead of matteau!!!

    LMFAO!

  332. the Rangers have drafted tremendously in the past few years, but hey you wanna draft the guy, you’ve never seen play a second of hockey simply because of who his dad is.

    Now that is great logic!!!

  333. JimboWoodside on

Jeff, that was a TSN production – that’s why there was all the Canadian “home-townism” in the commentary.

  334. Macho tea with ms. McGill on

Dubi, del zotto, thomas and next years 1 ( #30 biatch) for nash. Final offer

  335. Yandle to pens? F’realz?

We will be possessing Robert Ryan in a New York Minute. Stay Tuned!

  336. STOP TRAIDING DEFENSEMEN!!!

Jeez people!! We whined they only played 4.5 D in the playoffs and now you want to trade one of them? That is just ridiculous and very short-sighted!

  337. Down Goes Brown ?@DownGoesBrown
“Hey cool, you must be the son of that guy my dad scored on!” – Stefan Matteau meets Martin Brodeur at training camp

    Hahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaha!

didn’t matter who his dad was, unless I guess wilson’s dad played fo rthe rangers if that is what you mean.

Forgot you spend all your time watching the minors and the US developmental team, my bad!

  339. I am happy with the pick. Clark had said that this draft was super deep on D. The scouting report emphasizes this kid’s skating. Overall, sounds like a McDonaugh wannabe… which won’t bother me one bit if he turns into that. I know that is reaching right now. Also sounds like he has more of an eye towards offense.

  340. JimboWoodside on

Jeff – OK yes, that channel-jumping act was another travesty…chasing the show all over the dial!

  341. pens trade michalek to phx for prospects. free up money.

ryan suter or parise will be a penguin no doubt

  342. JimboWoodside on

Yes Wicky – from the Rangers – I thought we were going to hear of a draft-day trade. I’m feeling let-down.

  343. I have never even heard of the person the Rangers drafted, until about 3 hours ago. However, I look at the Rangers track record and assume they know what their doing.

Only time will tell, but he fits the Rangers recent draft strategy perfectly and is a guy they hope to add to their core…

  344. The Pens are about to do something big and I would bet it’s on Defense. Not that I know.

  345. leetchhalloffame on

Sather you are a moron. We need another d-man why? Oh, yes, I forgot this team can score goals at the drop of a hat. The non-pick of Matteau will come back to bite us in the carcillo just like not drafting Parise did. Idiots!!!

  346. Maybe we should relax…the Pens are probably just clearing the space to pick up DiPietro, right?

  347. JimboWoodside on

With our luck, Matteau’s kid turns into the next Parise…..and we have to live down the fact that we had the pick, but chose the guy we did anyway….

  348. JimboWoodside on

Leetchhall, I was thinking the exact same thing, but I didn’t refresh quickly enough!!!

  349. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

LOL!! Rangers only team in NHL that dress 11 d men that are part of their core every game!!

  350. Suter’s going to Detroit, I can almost bank on it. They have the cap room and dire need of a Dman and will not be turned down, no matter what the Pens throw at him.

  351. JimboWoodside on

Wicky, forgive my grousing about the Canadian home-townisms….I just think it’s funny that the commentators can’t help mentioning all these little one-road towns that the players grew up in, almost like it’s a Canadian TV rule that all these little hometowns must be mentioned at least 12 times during a broadcast….

  352. OK. So the I have been hearing that the Pens will have a hard time trying to keep Crosby, Malkin, and Staal. They trade Staal, are rumored to be after Suter and Parise? Ummm… wouldn’t they be more expensive than Staal? I realize that keeping Staal was not an option. However, this team will be super top heavy with no depth if they do get Parise and Suter (very likely neither will go there). Throw in the fact that Skid is one hit away from possibly never playing again, and this team is throwing all of its eggs in a super fragile basket.

I won’t mind if it fails one bit.

  353. JimboWoodside on

    >>>me too, bit of a downer I agree..

Yeah, Wicky – did you notice Slats staring plaintively at his cellphone while slowly walking down to the podium, like he was waiting to hear that another GM was ready to make that big trade that would negate the need for him to pick this unknown kid!?

  354. I would love for the Rangers to get scoring in this draft, but how does drafting a goal scorer help the team now? Get the best talent available when your turn comes up. We didn’t draft McD and Erixon yet we have them. Things can happen via trades for more prospect scoring. The draft isn’t over. Matteau is not a power forward of the future. He is a clone of his dad. 3rd or 4th liner. Good forechecker. Not a fantastic skater. Grinder. Much happier with Skjei.

  355. Done not counting Konopka, Gaustad and maybe a few other key additions (Iginla and Doan)

  356. Wicky© RUPP SMASH!!! on

    Jimbo
no worries, and on that note good night all and here’s hoping for some deals tomorrow!!

    LGR!!

  357. That’s the guy, ORR. He has a slightly inflated contract but is a *great* and *valuable* leader in the dressing room.

  358. Matteau’s kid would have been awesome but a strong skating defenseman? Works for me.

  359. Just saw “Prometheus”… awesome movie!

another defenseman? awesome… wtf are we gonna do with all these young defensemen?

  360. @CCCP@ what about Prometheus? Did he invent man!? Did he give Fire to Man as a gift? Did Zeuss punish the Carcillo out of him for life/eternity as a result?

  361. leetchhalloffame on

Matteau WILL be a top 6 forward and WILL score a bunch of big goals against the Rangers. Count on it. Unlike Sather Lamoriello’s no fool.

  362. IMAX 3D is the best way to watch this movie. Mind blowing…you’ll have a lot of unanswered questions after watching this movie but that is exactly what makes this film so good. Don’t read any reviews just go watch it.

    Manny,

    That is what they say…

  363. You guys are still a riot. Whatever they do is wrong based on the fact that they are the rangers. Taking matters kid would have been the same stupid move as drafting the sentimentl favorite jessiman or trading for Fedor Fedorov or Marcel Hossa. – the relative of the guy who was actually good. And at forward e rangers have Kreider, miller, Thomas, JAM, and who do they have on d as prospects? Tim Erixon, mcilrath and…and…and….. Nobody. They need more depth at d. Top six forwards don’t usually fall to 28th in e draft.
