The Rangers play their fourth must-win game of the year. Yes, this really is one.
But is it the last game? Is this the last “It’s Go Time!”?
I think not. But I’ve been wrong a bit lately.
We’re expecting Steve Eminger to go back into the lineup in place of Stu Bickel, but not expecting any other lineup changes.

I am not sure what to think. Generally speaking, when I’ve been completely down on this team in the playoffs they’ve come away with a win…when I’ve been confident, they’ve lost.

Giving up 4+ odd man rushes in a period, let alone in a period of an elimination game, is unacceptable. They’re down 2. Plenty of time. But this kind of effort wont get it done. Give the Devils credit for getting back on D very well and pinching in quite well. But they need to test Brodeur and his 17 chins.

After all this focus on Kovalchuk, Cally goes far out of position and leaves him all alone at the side of the net. A year of discipline by the Rangers to the point of boredom, and in the eimination game we abandon it all? Really surprising and hard to figure.
grabby, if you’re calling Kovalchuk a beast because he one-timed a cross ice pass into an empty net, then a lot of players are beasts. I really haven’t been impressed with him this series.
Chris they had a good possession right before the Feds penalty. But not much.
You can’t only blame MdZ on the first goal. Staal was also at fault. But MdZ had choice to make deep down by he goal, the right and only play is to cover the Devil player down low and take the body. The wrong play is to just stand there, watching the play and whiffing at the puck.
And how great did our fourth line look lumbering back to cover what is a real hockey line, even though they are the Devils fourth line?
To all you Rupp defenders out there, you still think he’s an NHL quality player?
Three Fugging scoring chances all period. A pop gun offense is just unacceptable. You cannot only defend your way to a Stanley Cup. But Torts said it himself. He doesn’t coach offense, only defense.

I don’t buy the fatigue argument. If they were fatigued, it would manifest itself as the game goes on.
Instead, they seem to find energy as the game progresses.

So, I’ve been a daily reader of Carp’s words of wisdom for about four years now. This is probably the only website that I check every day – and I used to develop code for websites for a living for large media companies. I’ve been an occasional poster, an occasional e-mailer of the Carp (ok, only once). I’ve been a Rangers fan since the first game I went to when I was 8 years old – it was against the Nordiques, probably back in 1988. Guy Lafleur was playing for the Rangers, that’s about all I remember from the game.
This current team is something special. Regardless of what happens tonight, this team is something special. Think about where we were a year ago. We had to count on the Bolts to win in order to just barely squeak into the playoffs. By this time last year, it was almost a month already after we’d almost been swept by the Caps. But fast-forward to 2012 and we were the first team in the East to clinch a playoff spot, and only two points from winning the President’s trophy. After this incredible season, to look upon this team with anything less than complete astonishment is disingenuous.
The whole comparison to 1994 makes me sick. This team is nothing like the ‘94 team. Both teams were unbelievable and special in their own ways, but they’re vastly different. Different people, different styles of play, different everything. I wish the league and the media would just shut up with the comparisons, although I understand why they do it. But it’s completely useless. Both teams deserve individual respect and recognition for the things they do to win games.
Just look at how our boys responded in the second. These guys never give up! As a fan, I’ve watched games where I’ve mentally given up (and Carp always complains about how often people around here give up). But these guys never do! They come back, and they grind, and they kick some Zuccarello-Aasen!
If there’s any team capable of doing this, it’s our boys. Forget the Devils and their divey-dirty play, and Marty’s Rockette kicks to the ceiling. Forget Washington, and Ottawa. Forget the first two periods of this game. Forget it all, and just focus on the next twenty. It might as well be a completely clean slate at this point. These guys can do it, and you can be sure they’re going to bust their butts every chance they can.
So with that said, as I wear my #2 jersey from Cosby’s…

When this season started i wasn’t even sure we would make the playoffs. They far exceeded my expectations this year but i thought that maybe this could be their year after being the top team for so long. Hard pill to swallow tonight, but I the guys played there hearts out. This team will be right back here next year and we will take the cup.

Proud of my team but this loss might be the worst I’ve ever been through emotionally.

This has been the easiest playoff exit since the lockout for me to take, surprisingly. Once we knocked out the Craps I BEGGED not to lose to the Swamp Rats, thinking it would be too great a yoke to bear. But there isn’t really anything more you can say about this team; they gave everything they had and fought to the bitter end.
The Devils were the better team over six games and they advanced, but it’s hard for me to respect them as a team regardless of their affiliation because of all the diving they did. Marty Brodeur, that arrogant, disrespectful, overrated, fat, diving adulterer will get his; no way a team with former Flyers will let him get another Cup.
LET’S GO RANGERS and, for now, LET’S GO KINGS!

So now we have to evaluate what changes need to be made. There are several right of the top of my head, I can think of at least 4-6 but I won’t vent until tomorrow. Tonight they deserve our respect and admiration for fighting as hard as they did. This season in the end ends because of what was their biggest issues rearing their ugly heads. They just couldn’t score enough and they have a weak pp.
Congrats Torts and yes, even Sather on a fun season. This team took a major step towards being a perennial contender this season. Let’s have a productive off season and come back and go get the Stanley Cup. Anything less next year will be a disappointment.

Hank may have to restructure. I think acquiring a Zach Parise, OR just putting so much financial pressure on the Derbils to keep him is important. Either hurt the Devils by taking Parise, or hurting their wallets for their future.
I’ll wait and see about Gaborik. He could be hurt? Who knows?
I think Del Zotto will be more effective when he plays regulalrly with a guy like Sauer (if he can make it back).
Losing Sauer hurt this team this season, I think. Forced Torts to overplay Girardi/McMonster/Staal/DZ, which may have cost us in the playoffs.

Two very similar teams, very evenly matched. I truly hate the Devils, almost as much as Philly, however I will say that Marty made a number of big impact saves throughout the series. Even in the second and third period of this game he was huge. Unfortunately, the Ranger players we expected the most from produced the least. Some of the forwards looked physically weak.
The bar has been raised though. Looking forward to next season. I expect a lot.

Now its a matter of adding just the right pieces – players who will play the way the coach demands.

I don’t like the piling on of Richards—the guy really was clutch these playoffs, and it seems he ran out of gas at the end. Gaborik is a bit more deserved, but I still want him on my team.
The team is real young. They’ll remix the squad a bit. If they could get Sauer back that would be key—he was missed in the playoffs. But the future is bright.

Eric, I truly hope I’m wrong – but you know how it is – one season ends sadly, but with promise for the next – and then something always happens. An injury to a major player, an accident that happens in the off-season – a coach getting a better offer from another organization…all kinds of crap that nobody could have anticipated.
Well, it’s over now – and I’ll be happy to be wrong – but don’t stake out you spots for the parade down the Canyon of Heroes in the spring of 2013, folks – I had mine picked out for 1995, and I still haven’t claimed it!

I’m pretty pleased with the job Sather’s done since the lockout, really. Getting us back to the playoffs those first few seasons was important, even if the teams weren’t structured well. He did a much better job of rectifying his errors. And now we’ve got a team that just went to the Eastern Conference Finals. I totally agree with everyone who wants to crucify him for his early years, but I can’t agree with people who want him out now, of all times.

As I said before Gabby unfortunately is not a playoff material (for comparison: mediocre in regular season Fedo was absolutely a Lion in PO). ...and please get rid of MDZ before it’s too late. He is not going to learn and we can’t afford to keep him as a promising one forever with the crucial mistakes he makes, which cost us games. In any action it could be the only one mistake, its repetition is already a choice. And he makes a bad one.

I too, have been impressed with Glen. And I’m not second-guessing his judgement to keep a young team together at a critical point in the season.
Going into the playoffs, and through the playoffs, the team as it is structured now, does not have the firepower to keep opposing teams back on their heels. The Devils do. The Caps do. The Penguins do.
This sounds strange, but I think a good offense, especially in terms of puck possession (Devils, Penguins) can make up for a questionable defense. It’s like “time of possession” in football. I dont know if they keep a Time of Puck Possession stat in hockey games, but perhaps they should. And see if and how it correlates with winning hockey games.
I hope the devils get crushed

I’m not giving up on Del Z. He’s no Leetch, but he had a bounce back season. He was good in the playoffs, but had a few tough games. It would be beyond stupid to just give up on him. Makes no sense.

A RUGGED 30 goal type player is what this team needs. In fact, if Dubinsky could find his 25-goal self again, he may have made a big difference this year.
ORR, it was tough, but n the lousy NBC replay you could see the puck leave the guys stick and he angle of launch. With the velocity the puck was shot at and at the angle it was leaving the stick along from the live play that I replayed with DVR it was apparent it was well over the glass
i’m with you Orr—I’m not giving up on Del Z either. Lets get him a regular stay-at-home defense partner (where are you Mr. Sauer Power?) and I think Delzy will be more than fine. He’ll be excellent.

Sather flushed our season when his sole deadline acquisition was John Scott.
Just as a fan watching on tv I think hank had an injury. He just looked off last three games. Gabby also got run early in ottawa and looked like a shoulder situation. They hard with heart. Great seasons.
Im with ORR. Would I include him in some kind of deal? Yes. He’s not untouchable in my book. But MDZ is no Leetch.

I just dont think that referee crew had the stones to call a 5 on 3 in the 3rd period of a clinching game in front of the “home” fans.
Haven’t felt this bad since what was it, 2006, when Gomez and the NJD eliminated us from the playoffs after Jagr hurt himself trying to hit Gomez?
That was a terrible exit, but it was in the first round – but this one is even worse, because we could have been playing in the Stanley Cup Final series, so NJDs have really, really put it to us, but good.

I have no issues with the team as a whole. They played their hearts out all season and made their fans very proud. My disappointment is with a couple of individuals who failed to show up when they were counted on. The “little things” they did in the playoffs just was not big enough to take the team to the Promised Land.
Brutal brutal loss. Perhaps the toughest part of this was the realization that the Devils were the better team. Rangers kept finding a way to grind out wins no matter what and I really believed they’d do the same here, they just didn’t have the personnel in the end.
Del Z is not Leetch.. he’s Del Z. I wouldnt give up on him so easily. One player whom I thought played great tonight who I may feel comfortable trading is AA though.

What a great series. What a great year.
Sucks to lose to ‘them’, but what a great step for the organization. If the GM is smart, he keeps listening to other people and builds some depth. Who knows what would have happened if he added a defenseman or two for these playoffs?
Regardless, the future is bright, this is a big leap forward. Great job, Torts. Great job, Torts, with an ;inferior roster. Congrats to one and all, except Sather.
I’ll say this, watching some of those guys on defense struggle in these last three games, maybe Slats might be more tempted to throw the dough at Suter instead of Parise.

Torts got everything he could out of the group he had to work with…...a lot of young guys are now experienced vets and will be the role models for the next wave of young guys that are coming. The core of this team has changed from where it was at the end of last year. Skill up front has to be better…disappointed that the stars can’t seem to handle the intensity of playoff hockey. This team was a tight group and had character guys, but changes need to be made up front.
Zubov was a star when the Rangers traded him, Del Zotto is still trying to get there. But I think it would be foolish to give up on him now.
Gabby is certainly a wimpy playoff player. Not strong enough to fight off the tight checking in the playoffs and create his own scoring chances. Plus he’s a defensive liability. (See OT goal tonight)
Need to add some scoring punch for next season. Hopefully Srep picks it up in his third season. We need more firepower on the fron end. Trade Gabby. Get Nash and Parise
Defensively with Sauer back (hopefully) and Erixon making the team we will have a solid 3rd pair.

What also bothers me and make bitter, is the fact, that besides all this well deserved stuff with Rangers ID and character this season, I think that so called stars alignment and good luck was so favorable to our team, except the very last moment…everything worked – it was a excellent chance once in a blue moon…Oh, shiiiiiiit! Don’t want to talk about it anymore. Thank you everyone and Carp in particular for excellent job and feel of fellowship if not a brotherhood. Bow to all participants. My only regret – didn’t drink to oblivion tonight – it would make dark event more bearable.

Seems the refs never had the stones to make calls for the rangers. Stepan high stocked leads to goal game 5. Callahan crosschecked down then 5 more times on ice, Devs score less than a minute later. No 5 on 3 on blatant delay of game becaus they don’t feel like it. A years salary says if it were e rangers that call gets made every time. The league is a joke. NBC aren’t thinly new anti-ranger

19 was a liability all series in own end of ice…..........10 took a lot of heat for not getting puck out in game 2 but watch where 19, the center was, all the way up by red line and Rangers didnt have possession of puck in own end…....... he was a nightmare, nonexistant on breakout so no pass available off wall for wingers….........poor d zone awareness plus never mind the weak attempt at goaltending on the ot goal….....lay down make them get the puck up, you make enough money

The LA Kings will be rested. They will look “off” in Game 1, but they will get their legs under them and take over the series. The Derbils now have to deal with Kopitar, Mike Richards, and Jonathan Swift & co.

Great season. Overachieved and showed guts all year through. Proud of their effort.
HOWEVER—squandered a golden opportunity. Were up 2 games to 1 and 6 games from the cup, lost 3 straight and are done to crash out of the playoffs. Fatso outplayed Henrik for the last 3 games. The Devils 4th line killed us and ours contributed very little. We played mostly 4 d-men. Kreider played 9:00 tonight. We had them on the ropes and did not get the job done, and that includes the two $7 Million men on the roster who did squat this round. We were outcoached by DeBoer. Chances are that we don’t get this far next season. Then we will realize what an opportunity we had.
Kreider was one of the better players on the team since he was inserted in the lineup. and one of the most productive. it’s either the beginners luck, or true skill. I tend to believe it’s latter. And that may alter their thinking of who they want to sign this offseason.

All I wanted was to see them fight hard tonight, win or lose. I thought several players stepped up tonight and in this series and the playoffs. Some did not. I will address some of those players tomorrow. And believe me, I have a lot to say with regards to what should be done with them.

this sucks
I think after being pushed so hard in games 1-3 Henk was just mentally exhausted. Same thing happened against the Caps when we were up 3-1 in 09 – he built that lead form us and then just had nothing left. That’s not a knock on him it just is how I see it.
Also we said that this team won so much all year by out working everyone then once the playoffs started everyone works that hard and the teams with more talent go farther. That’s why the Rangers had such a tough time in all three rounds.
Still.man amazing year. Best I can remember since 97. I had so many awesome nits at MSG. – the opening brawls against the flyers and Devils that always ended in Ranger wins, beating Boston and Pittsburgh, game 5 against the caps, both game sevens. It was just an amazing year to be a Ranger fan. If y are only happy with a Cup then you will be miserable the vast majority of e time no matter who you root for.
