Rangers-Devils Game 5.
Ya boys are 1-1 in Game 5s, and have won both series anyway.
Expecting some changes for the Rangers tonight. Brandon Prust returns from his suspension, and it looks as if Stu Bickel goes back on defense for Steve Eminger. Whether Brandon Dubinsky (or Mats Zuccarello, or even Kris Newbury) plays has not been announced, but Dubinsky appears about ready to go and probably would go in. He left the morning skate before John Mitchell did today, and that’s usually a decent indicator. But this is the playoffs, and games are always being played between games.
Devils coach Pete DeBoer said he will stick with the same lineup that controlled Game 4.

I have been listening exclusively to the radio feed, but on 1050 AM (or whatever other AM station is carrying the game), but synchronization with the TV feeds has been an ongoing problem here.

Best case scenario: This early goal deficit gets the offensive juices flowing that we need to not only win the game, but advance to the final round.
Rangers skaters have oddly their best first period of the series, yet a couple of soft goals have put them in an early hole.
Hopefully LQ finds the sealant within and locks the door for the rest of the game and we can (potato) chip away at Marty.
While holding a sliver of hope that they can come back in this game, the question has to be asked:
How much blame does the coaching staff get for continually having this team not ready to play at the start of a game lately?

Carp, seriously, I think everyone is concerned that if they lose 2 games in a row now (which certainly is a possibility tonight), that this “magic” playoff run might be over. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know that I feel that way.
I do believe in “negative” momentum – maybe not so much in positive momentum.
If they play with the same effort as that period they will win this game. I would not be surprised one bit if they win it.

Let me state right now, the Rangers are playing with house money. Getting to the conference final is more than I could have dreamed of this season. For their talent level, they have overachieved big time.

One huge positive, I get to watch Hockey Night in Canada feed! What a refreshing way to watch a hockey game! No waffle-boarding, no pitchforking back ahead, no driving into posts, and most importantly no ‘DZO BROTHERS (Edzo, Docdzo, and TalkingForeskindzo) ...just plain old fashioned hockey analysis.

I’ve never knocked Henrik on here (or anywhere else) and usually hate it when people pile on him for “soft” goals, but I have to say that this one is kind of on him.

Not sure about the 50 minute figure. The big difference in this game was the Rangers didn’t play as well in the third as they did from around the time of the timeout (let’s not forget that terrible Zajack goal came after the timeout). Whether the Devils stepped up their game or the Rangers dipped a little, I don’t really know – Chrome Dome couldn’t stop talking about how brilliant DeBoer’s line scrambling was, but I have a hard time believing you should be losing thanks to anything come off the stick of the other Gionta.

The only goal you can really blame Hank on is the 3rd. He had no shot on the 4th goal, that was all Hagelin. The low shot total for Devils is deceiving because the Rangers did dominate the play that much. If only some of you would admit and see that…

Rangers came out early and looked pretty good. The problem was that they were down 3-0 before they even broke a sweat. I give them full marks for clawing their way back to tie the game, but I’m not sure their intensity matched what the Devils had in the latter stage of the game and their goalie couldn’t make a big save tonight. This is going to be really really tough to come back from.

I love this team just as much as anyone here and it’s been an AWESOME season…. To win the next 2 just doesn’t seem feasible this time around. It’s like taking too many penalties in a game… Eventually you’re going to get burned and that’s pretty much what I expect here… A loss at the pebble. I thought that the Ranger’s big missed opportunity was after the 2 quick goals to start the 2nd period. They got that power play which killed all the momentum that they had going and then they were killing penalties the rest of the period. They were coming on, but instead did nothing the rest of the period offensively. How can a team be so good most nights 5 on 5, but is lost when 5 on4???
Anyone who is scared and don’t think the Rangers will go on to game seven is a fool who hasn’t watched this team all year. Oh sure the naysayers are bailing on our team but it really shows who watches the games. A real true Ranger fan knows we got this and is waiting for game six to prove it.

My opinion, two evenly matched teams. Difference in the series is the Devils have capitalized on their prime chances, Rangers have not.
MDZ had a rough night defensively, but that last goal was absolutely not on him. Hagelin was a passenger on the backcheck and could have easily caught Carter, which would have negated the scoring opportunity.
The bigger issue is Rupp a -2. The guy is an absolute plug and I can’t wait until this guy is gone. He can’t fight, can’t score and can’t defend. What DO you do?
Del Z wasn’t that bad tonight. He screwed up on the game winner, but so did Girardi & Hags. Somehow most fans forget that, because Del Z is apparently the whipping boy.

Heartbreaking loss after that big comeback, but we just failed to get that go-ahead goal. I think it was an overall good effort minus the first 10 minutes. Henrik letting in that third goal was a back-breaker, but we fought hard to come back, and while we got a few flukes goals, it was the result of hard work and playing “the right way.”
If we play like we did in the second period Friday, we can win and take it back to MSG for a game 7 – and we’ve had two strong game 7s so far. Gotta believe. Let’s go Rangers!

I agree with ilb. It wasn’t Hank’s best game. But, I think those early goals more to do with him slowly reacting to unlucky bounces than being outplayed by Fatso….Prust sayin’....he wasn’t that bad….
Totally disagree. If MdZ skates hard after that puck and doesn’t slow down and pull up and duck like a coward, that goal never happens. Watch the replay. Not only does chicken out on the play, he also picked up his stick high to brace him self. If he at least has is stick on the ice, that play doesn’t happen either. He has been brutal this series and most of the Caps series. That’s just the way it is.
But as much as I blame MdZ for the fourth goal, it does not excuse the second straight poor effort by Hank. And the shame of it all is that they played by far their best game of this series. Maybe it carries over into Friday and they can steal another one to force game seven.
It’s really a shame, this could have been a good series if the Rangers bothered to show up. Maybe Carp can ask Torts the following:
When you say you have complete confidence in your team, does that include the guys you benched but are now back in? And inserting guys in the lineup that haven’t played in a month hoping they’ll spark something? Does that exude confidence? And when you say you respect the guys too much to change but then randomly shuffle the lines, that’s just gamesmanship I guess?
It’s men against boys. The Rangers all but threw in the towel. All three Rangers goals were garbage/soft. And after all that, they roll over and hand it right back in typical gutless fashion. Oh well, maybe next game, right? When was the last time they actually scored a legit goal? Kreider probably wishes he was back at BC, they had a better system, coach, and power play. They’d give the Devils a better game, too.
Ditch Torts, get a guy who can light a fire under his team. He’s by a mile the most responsible for this debacle. 5 games, 5 starts like that? It’s too bad the brodads like to suck him off so much. He’s gotta go.

there’s this other thing where people grossly exaggerate the criticism of others. do you really think someone who’s been coming here to post every day for years and years doesn’t love the team? I mean, come on. perhaps it’s your own support of the team that’s tenuous if you’re unable to tolerate the opinions of others.
Mickey, you know I didn’t do that – all I said was that Hank had an AWFUL game – and I think he would probably agree with me. But if he didn’t, I’m still entitled to my opinion.
The defense was nowhere for the first 10 minutes of the game, too – they sucked as well! The forwards didn’t backcheck worth a damn, either. But he’s the last line of defense. That’s why he gets paid the “big bucks”.
TheRangersDontWantIt – I agree that these slow starts are very troubling, but I don’t know if Torts deserves all or even the majority of the blame. Torts lit a fire under them all season and had them outwork the opposition. At this stage of the playoffs, if they still need Torts to light a fire under them, then there is a problem with team leadership, not Torts. The real problem is that our guys who should dominate these games – Richards and Gaborik, in particular – have barely shown up. And Henrik, while he has been awesome the playoffs, had a bad game tonight. Henrik’s bad game + slow start + stars not showing up = loss. I think we can pull it together and take game 6, but these guys don’t make it easy on themselves or on us.

I didn’t really see the Rangers start slow tonight. I thought they were fine until the walls caved in. There was a goal off a bad rebound, a goal off Anisimov, and an atrocious goal from Zajac before the Rangers broke a sweat. All flukey crap.

Yes. Personally, I find anyone never questions anything to be contemptible but maybe that’s just me, you know, the guy who lives and dies by this team but obviously hates them.
It’s remarkable that the Devils fourth line has been directly responsiblie for two wins in this series. They have players on that line that can actually play,skate shoot pass. We have Mike Rupp,and John Mitchell. Two useless buffoons who have no business playing in the NHL, let alone the NHL playoffs. Deboer plays Gionta, a guy no bigger than Zucc. But Torts doesn’t play Zucc tonight because he would rather have Rupp’s prolific offensive game in the lineup.

Heartbreaking loss. Especially after fighting to tie it back up. Does anybody think they weren’t trying? The Rangers lost nothing but the game tonight. There is another chance on Friday. Yes now it’s tougher, they have to win the next two. Must games. But for all the true fans, I bet you’ll all be watching game six. The rest of you can cry, moan, suggest they fire the coach, bench players, change lines, put Biron in, if you think he’ll do better than Hank. It doesn’t matter.
Save your breath, and wait until Friday and root for your team.
That’s why I believe they have a chance Friday, Lloyd. Probably more than if the were heading there up 3-2 after winning in similar fashion as game 1 and 3.

Jimbo, I didn’t mean you. I know you’re fair and square and express your frustration over this team readily, but still have a grain of intelligence once the initial disappointment is over. I meant in general. Rangers fans love to carcillo on their own and while it’s deserved at times, I just think it’s so over the top at times that it’s ridiculous.

I think a loss like this could be catastrophic. While there hadn’t been much evidence of things carrying over from one game to the next in the previous two rounds, I do feel the Devils have done a pretty decent job of sustaining their intensity over the last several games. I feel like we got a decent effort early on from the Rangers that went south after some crappy goals. They certainly amped it up after that and were extremely aggressive right up until they tied the game. Then they started playing not to lose – the sort of thing we used to see from them when games ended in shootouts – and the Devils took advantage of that. The Rangers have not played a solid 60 minutes of hockey since (maybe) game 1. These last two games they’ve been blown out of the water before the game even started.
It was great to come back from a 3-0 hole, but to start playing like you’re sitting on the lead and basically get passive with the game on the line just isn’t the way to win games. Rangers got beat tonight by borderline NHLers on that fourth goal. That had everything to do with the Rangers level dropping off and giving every guy on the Devils bench the feeling that the Rangers were serving the game up to them on a silver platter. And let’s face it, we’ve not seen the Rangers maintain a level of intensity from one game to the next throughout the playoffs. You just wonder if they can get EVERYONE to come out at their best for the next two; if they don’t do that, they’ll be gone in 6.
