Post-practice interviews: Richards has “it”

An unusually reflective John Tortorella and a handful of players were available today after the Rangers met at the Garden. They talked as a team around 1:30 before taking the ice for a quick skate about a half hour later.

Among other things, Tortorella discussed the leadership of Brad Richards, the progression of Marc Staal, the two-way play of Anton Stralman since his benching and what John Mitchell has added recently and what he wants to see before the fourth-line centers earns more ice time.

The most interesting portion of Tortorella’s press conference was about his relationship with Richards. The coach isn’t exactly known to share his feelings, but he admitted this about he and the former Conn Smythe winner:

“There’s a relationship there. I’m not going to hide from that at all,” Tortorella said. “He’s done a lot of great things and helped teams that I’ve coached win. When you get involved in that and you go through the ups and downs of that — and him and I have — sure you’re going to develop a relationship.”

As what has made Richards so special as a player, Tortorella said, “He’s got ‘it.’ He just has it. … I’ve known him since he was a kid when he broke into the league and he’s made big plays at key times.”

A few other quick notes:

• The NHL said Richards’ tying goal was actually scored with 7.6 seconds remaining — not 6.6. Although the clock read 6.6 after the goal, it was actually 7.6 for the ensuing draw.

Just about everyone, including us, reported it as 6.6. So did the official box score. But the AP had it as 7.6 and the league has now deemed that correct.

So file that “7.6” away in the “in case you need to remember is forever” folder in your brain, fans.

Carl Hagelin’s lip looked swollen, but no worse for the wear.

Mats Zuccarello (broken wrist) was among the Rangers who skated at practice. He did a little puck handling with the team.

• The team’s headed down on the train this afternoon. It will skate prior to Game 6 tomorrow morning.

just watched the game again. feels even better to see the gwg!!!!!! good reporting josh, 26.6.

  2. what is with the stupid firecrackers going off after the game? did Dolan decide to use his illegal stash of firecrackers before the 4th of July ?

will there be M-80’s if they win the cup??

  3. JPG,

The answer to your question is Kreider. I actually thought he was going to go from the bench to the ice in one glorious leap. I think there was a split second where he realizes he is caught in the middle of a very awkward situation and that’s how he ended up with one leg over wall and one still standing by bench.

And I hate to bring it back up…but shame on the majority of the go time posters who were calling the series over when game 5 is tied 1-1 with 13 minutes left. There was one comment from a person who actually said this was the worst time he can remember as a ranger fan….REALLY??? WTB??? The rangers are fighting tooth and nail in the second round of the playoffs and you are going to say this is your worst fan moment? PLEASE stop watching hockey or choose another team to cheer for. We dont need you on our side.

Can someone with more free time than me please go back to the go time thread and make a detailed list of every name that put up a comment that was negative. Such as the guy who turned game off with 5 minutes remaining…or the guy who said hank needs to make those stops and hank is reason we will lose series. I know miami pimp is sarcastic with his posts but all others need to be shamed with having those comments reposted.

  4. Matteau! – No one believed that would happen last night. I had taken my hats, strategically placed for karma, and thrown them into the back of my closet, taken my shirt and thrown it into the laundry, took my glasses off and made my wife put away her Lundqvist shirt (Ladies Love Hank L.). As I was picking up the remote to switch channels to avoid a Capitals celebration on our darn ice the impossible occurred.

  5. Joke, cmon man. Any long time fan has good reason to feel impending doom and those on the blog who are offended by the expression of this I think take themselves and this blog a bit too seriously. Yes I stayed to the end of the game and had hope but I’d be lying if I said I believed that would happen.

  6. Manny that’s hilarious. I was preparing myself to refuse to look down at the Caps end because I couldn’t stand to see them celebrate.

  7. Also, Matteau! to lay it on even thicker. I got so excited when Richie scored with -6.6- 7.6 seconds left that I picked up Mrs. Manny and banged my head on her chin. That resulted in both of us having to go into dark room for self-concussion monitoring for 20 minutes.

  8. Matteau,

I have been a NYR fan since ’86 and therefor can’t for the life of me understand how our fan base isn’t having the time of our lives watching and rooting on this group of guys. This is BY FAR my favorite ranger team since ’92-’94. I understand being disappointed if we lose series etc…but wasted season? Torts sucks? Trade this guy and that guy. Turning game off rather than watch this group of guys go 110% to the final buzzer??? That’s just not me. I won’t for a second say I knew we were gonna score but I can’t stand reading back through comments full of a bunch of “fans” who spend an hour trashing our team only to then cheer and celebrate when the goal goes in.

  10. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Carp, sorry that I had to miss the live chat for a coworker’s birthday lunch. I just read through the transcript and something you said about increasing scoring caught my eye. You said that they should make the goaltending equipment smaller. There’s no way that they would do something that would remove protection from the goaltenders.

The best two answers I’ve seen on how you increase scoring are to:

    1) Change the posts so that they angle towards the inside of the goal. Think of all of the posts that get hit, and if the posts were angled so that pucks that hit them tended to go into the net, scoring would naturally be increased.

    2) Call icing on penalty killers. The big problem with this proposal is that it might increase scoring TOO much and just make every game about special teams. But it’s still a good insight. Why should a team be given a special power for taking a penalty?

  11. WhoNeedsLohan on

Doodie, been a long time. Why not just make the goals an inch bigger on each side instead of angling the posts? Also, more space behind the nets would probably help as well.

  12. The goalies are no longer protecting themselves. They’re making themselves bigger, and that includes higher, rounder shoulder pads, padding on their sides, much bigger gloves, including that square “protective” piece above the pizza-sized catching apparatus. Their pants are wider. It’s ridiculous. There’s no net anymore.

Pekka Rinne, as good as he is, makes 20 or 30 percent of his saves because he’s so wide.

  13. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Because changing the net size is a slippery slope. Say you change it one inch and scoring increases a little bit. Why not add another inch? And another? At what point do you stop expanding the net?

You change the angle on the posts once and you’re done.

  14. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Carp, I agree with you, but you try and sell it to the NHLPA and the GMs that you want to take ANY protection from goaltenders, no matter how diminished of a return the extra padding is.

  15. Slight correction, Månnu. There’s nothing international about VinceA Day. It’s just for us Yankee Doodles (and maybe a few Canooks, except for the Frenchies).

  16. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

    In honor of VinceA day:

Q: How do you get Europansy hockey players to go into the corners?
A: Have a fight at center ice.

  17. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

You aren’t changing the dimensions of the internal frame, you are just changing the shape of the pipe surrounding it.

  18. I’m with Joke. There’s a difference between being depressed and waning or lost hope and the ridiculous “race to be the first to say they’re done” and trashing of the team. Huge difference. And it’s so ironic to see those same people praise (in the good times, of course) this team’s all for one attitude or trash perceived selfish players on other teams.

  19. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Don’t think of it as just molding the circles into an angular shape. That would increase the size of the net. You have to modify the size of the piping as well so that the actual opening remains 6X4.

  20. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

instead of circles I should have said cylinder.

  21. So I was attempting to pull a window open last night when one thing led to another and I had a titanium lacrosse shaft rifle through my living room window. Interestingly enough, it isnt easy to get one replaced quickly without mortgaging requisite organs…

I had a close friend and flyers friend over last night for the game who was enjoying my squirming late in the third at which point I promised that if we could just TIE the game, I’d never bitch about that broken window again.

$hit eating grin as I paid for a new window this morning and here’s why:

This team just wins. They make OTHER teams think they are snake-bit. Look at this club from an outsiders perspective? Back to back must wins against Ottowa… Done. Triple OT? Done. Goal in final ten to tie? Done. Goal two minutes into OT? Done.

At 30, this is the BEST time I’ve ever had as a Rangers fan as my “fandom” was certainly questionable at best 18 years ago… Heart, hustle and a deep sense of pride in their chosen trade!

LETS GO RANGERS and thanks for this gift of a season!!!

  22. Only marginal stuff, Doodie, but changing the angle to direct more picks into the goal is effectively increasing the area that a puck has to hit to score. Same as making the posts thinner or making the frame bigger by a fraction of an inch.

  23. Hey guys!

Brother and I are thinking about going into the city tomorrow to watch the game at a bar near MSG. What’s the best bar in the area to do this?

  24. billybleedsblue on

Wow, what a game. I missed the entire thing though. I’m out of town at a conference and couldn’t get the game in my hotel room, and wasn’t willing to “go out” to find the game.

I was on the phone with a friend though to get live updates and I almost hit my head on the ceiling when I jumped @ 6.6 seconds or whatever it was, lol.

  25. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

Yes, it changes the area the puck can hit to score, but without the slippery slope of ok, that’s one inch, how about two? how about three? etc.

  26. billybleedsblue on

If there were multiple pucks in-play, there’d be more scoring. Just think multiball, but with pucks…

  27. e3 (pimp's angel) on

remove the goalies and go empty net….that would increase scoring

  28. ok, if the goalies won’t make their equipment smaller, then we will make the puck smaller. the war room in Toronto will need a microscope to review disputed goals.

  29. e3 (pimp's angel) on

or keep the goalie equipment the same and go with soccer sized nets

  30. Manny, how about this- I had such a head rush from jumping up and screaming I thought i was going to pass out. You know I’m not exaggerating because that’s pretty lame to admit!

  31. billybleedsblue on

…if you catch the golden-snitch, that’s gotta be worth like 10 goals, at least. Or just shut up and go watch basketball, lol.

  32. e3 (pimp's angel) on

soccer sized nests…..bigger pucks…..bigger pucks bigger sticks……bigger sticks more hooking……more hooking….more PP…….more pp more scoring…therefore bigger nets leads to more scoring

  33. billybleedsblue on

lol, PP with MULTIPUCK and you can use your hands and throw the puck in the net too…

  34. I’m totally with Carp, if you look at what goalies looked like even 20 years ago, you can see how far the size of the gear has come.

Looked at Mike Smith last night and thought about just this issue…he’s a big guy but there is almost literally no net there.

The reason I don’t like the idea of changing the size of the nets is the need for goalies to completely retrain all of their innate assumptions that have been so since the beginning of their hockey lives…All of their angles, their assumptions, everything would change.

  35. seriously, though. 2 rules that need changing to increase scoring are no hand passes in the def zone either, why should that be ok only in one zone? and pucks that are deflected in by a high stick should all be allowed. that is a skill, it is hand-eye coordination, it is ridiculous to have long delays and then wave those off. unless an opposing player was hit by a high stick, which is already a penalty, high deflections should be goals.

  36. “The slippery slope of ok, that’s one inch, how about two? how about three?”

Can’t believe Eddie hasn’t commented on this yet…

  37. bull dog line on

goalie equipment to big. move the net back to where it was. to much time spent behind net. Gretzky is out of league. move blue lines back to make neutral zone smaller. tougher to trap that way. 5 of 6 teams left play trap.

  38. NN…agree on getting rid of the hand passes in the D-Zone would be a help.

I’m not so sure about the high sticks because then it becomes a safety issue, you’ll have D’guys launching slap shots high as a way to avoid blocked shots and then guys in front purposefully waving their sticks high…sounds like a recipe for a lost eye or two.

  39. Leave the goal sizes alone.

Don’t change power play rules, makes it too much about special teams.

Yes reduce the goal equipment size.

Make the rinks a few feet wider, not quite Olympic, but wider. Not just for scoring but safety.

  40. you already have the safety issue because of the shot blocking. guys get hit by deflected pucks in the face when they are standing in front and the deflection off the shotblocker sometimes makes the puck go up high into players faces.

  41. Just curious, what do you want the goals per game number to be? For everyone’s reference, 2011-2012 season it was 5.5. From 1999 to 2000 it was around 5.4. Right after the lockout it “spiked” to 6.1, went down since. This year it was similar to 2007-2008 season.

  42. bull dog line on

I want the goalies to have to make saves. dropping to there knees and letting the puck hit them is not the goaltending I remember. the goalies today look like indoor lacrosse goalies.

  43. NN, don’t disagree that there is a safety risk in blocking shots already but can’t see the NHL enacting a rule change that has more sticks up around the eye and face area…

  44. Arbitrary number, Matteau, I gather. My point is, from a statistical point of view, in order to make it significantly higher one would need to many drastic changes. Whatever minor changes have been proposed, would not make much of a difference. Let the game evolve, and let the players adapt.

  45. Bull dog, sorry, but what you remember may not be the game they play now. Different speed, different size of players. Call it modern hockey. It isn’t what I used to see either, and I’ve been watching, and playing for many, many years. It is what it is. It remains a beautiful game. And goalies are bigger, and will probably keep growing. Unless we start limiting goaltenders to jockeys.

  46. Did I just say “to” instead of “too”, dammit? I’ve been around the blog for too (to) long :-)

  47. e3 (pimp's angel) on

LW – the slippery slope of ok is equal to the greased up change in the vertical divided by the oiled up change in the horizontal……if that ratio is ok, well then, ok

  48. e3 (pimp's angel) on

scoring should be adjusted to reflect distance from goal…a shot from the point should be worth 5 goals, a tip in right in front worth 1 goal… empty netter launched from deep inside your own zone could be worth 12 goals…….scoring would go up

  49. Cant imagine how many *absolutely atrocious* goals we’d have to see each game for the average to get as high as 6.5.

  50. They can also start using those Bridgestone pucks, eddie. You score with this one, 20 goals.

  51. e3 (pimp's angel) on

  53. 4everanger on

I think, that goalies bigger equipment is also partially respond for ever changing geometry of curve and materials for field player’s sticks, which create much more velocity, force and way of trajectory of shots (improving precision, creating spin for a puck and straighter/shorter way “tape-net”) , even for average players.

  54. Duker hit the molly wee at 30th and 8th. Remember the Knicks are on as well. My vote is fitzgeralds on 25th and 3rd. Not near the garden but the ranger game is always on. 57. bull dog line on

goalies are not athletes anymore. find the biggest guy, put a large amount of equipment and let it him. and to the person that suggested making the rinks wider. european leagues have the wider rink, and they are low scoring.

  58. 4everanger on

I like it as it is. If Fhilties can score on Flower like 7-8 goals per game, and best in the world Hank time to time swallows 4-5, it’s more than enough scoring in my book

  59. We have a new ro youth hockey dinner tomorrow so I will be in my khakis in front of the club tv. No pibbers but plenty of ranger fans in the house.

  60. Iib 6.5 not arbitrary at all. More than what we have now, but not quite 7 which is a lot. Need some outside of the box thinkers for rule changes, not the NHL’s strong suit.

  61. e3 (pimp's angel) on

the bottom line: increase scoring by getting more goals….its really that simple

  62. 4everanger on

Is anybody nervous before tomorrow? Please don’t. It is not a MUST win game and we have a moral (no, not a momentum, Carp) advantage. Do we?
Knowing myself and my maxi me son I’m just preparing for potential troubles in the sea of red. I have understandable, deep allergy and idiosyncrasies for color red.

  63. e3 (pimp's angel) on

  64. e3 (pimp's angel) on

4ever – rangers complete the sweep tomorrow…no need to be nervous

  65. I believed we would tie the game last night. I always believe in the impossible. Without hope, well, whats the point of life.

My brother went to bed with 2 minutes left. I went in during OT intermission and sort of half chuckled that he quit on them, and he said “We didnt score. We both know they didnt score.” So I went away and the 5 minutes later, I said to him “Suppose there was an OT, would you want to watch it?” And he said no.

So when I started screaming when we won, he came out of the room to the living room, and I told him about the 4 minute PP with Hags bleeding being scored on both ends and he responded “So these piece of carcillo referees thought theyd give us a PP to make things look fair” and “Ive waited all year to see one of our guys bleed, and it takes me to not watch for it to happen. Figures.”

The mushroom soup she is stirring looks delicious. But so will the rebounds that Queen Henrik will afford the Caps come Wednesday night.

Goaltending has been the flyers achilles heel since the early days of Hextall.

  90. LaTONYa from Miami on

If Brodeur plays like has so far in the playoffs I am really not concerned about the Devils. They have been gifted a bunch of goals as well; NYR have had to work for practically everything. The Devils forecheck can dominate but the Rangers usually handle sustained pressure by the other team reasonably well.

  91. JimboWoodside on

Well, that had to be a very disappointing period for the Flys and their fans.

  92. Bryzgalov is gonna get run out of town he keeps that up. That signing just might be the worst thing to happen to that franchise when you consider the length of the deal and the realization after the fact that he’s a complete headcase and can become an absolute sieve in net.

I’m not gonna look ahead at all. Not until the Rangers actually win that fourth game.

But man alive, the possibility for next round would be epic.

  93. No matter what happens tonight or in this series i’ve said it once and i’ll say it agin, you’ll never win a cup with bryzgalov in the net. He’s not that good and he is a mental patient.

  94. Anybody else get the impression that Bryzgalov really doesn’t care all that much if they win or lose the game?

It’s insignificant in the grand scheme of the universe.

  95. Just saw Jeremy Roenick on TV again singing the praises of the Capitals. I’ve had enough of him! What a doofus! ……..just needed to vent for a second. GO RANGERS!!!!

  100. Best two goalies left, JR? I think Hank has something to say about it….

  101. Gonna go with 7-8000 of the 19000. Maybe more depending on the season ticket holders relatives being ranger fans. What’s that about 40 percent? Expect a good 750 Debbie fans at the garden. Wait what is capacity at the pebble? Wait Barry melrose still thinks caps in seven despite the miracle on 33rd street last night.

  102. LaTONYa from Miami on

Remember Chico whining about the Rangers fans celebrating victory at the Pebble when we eliminated the Devs a few seasons back? Classic!

  103. I dont think the % of Rangers fans at the Rock will be that high to be honest. The Rock was rocking last game. Way louder than MSG has been at any point these playoffs. I was shocked.

and tho think that NJD didn’t even make the playoffs last year… disgusting

  105. let’s put it this way. there will be a hell of a lot more Ranger fans at the pebble than there will be Debbie fans at MSG. also, there will be a lot more Ranger fans at Newark than there were at Ottawa or Washington.

it will almost be like 7 home games with the noise level and passion of Ranger fans on the road.

  106. I think this flyer squad did very little to prepare the devils for the rangers or the caps. And lev if you think the pebble was louder than msg last night you need your hearing checked. My tinnitus is still bothering me 24 hours later. On average there is a massive contingent of ranger fans in nj. Don’t be shocked if that’s the case game three–If it even happens. The caps ain’t dead yet!

  113. Im talking sustained loudness PBR. MSG seemed dead yesterday midway in the 3rd. It was really loud in the last minute when the crowd waved their little towels and of course once Richie scored. During the Devils game the crowd was insane the entire game. Enough so that the commentators, i dont remember who it was I think Kenny Albert, said it’s by far the loudest it’s been at the Rock. All im saying is that our fans will most likely not be filling half the arena. It will be 7 half half crowds i think.

  114. How fitting would that be for the Flyers: a GWG in elimination game on a horrible play by their goaltender. Will they ever learn?

  115. Miami Pimp on

    Amen, LATONY

(ps. please be sure to hyphenated “Mickey-Mouse” in future use).

  116. Are the Debbies really that good? Is this the same team that barely squeaked by Panthers?

I hate that team so much!

  117. Hey maybe Flys can blow half the team up again and sign a different backup goalie in the offseason?

  118. JimboWoodside on

C3, they didn’t look very good against Florida – I don’t know what made them world-beaters all of a sudden when they drew the Flyers – it’s an amazing thing!

  119. Tonight Marty will only feast on orange foods post-game in honor of Mr. Snider and Comcast (Cheetos, Cheez-its, etc.).

  120. Kind of shocked that the Devs bought into Theboar’s system as well as they have. On the other hand maybe we shouldnt be surprised. Torts did say that the first round of the playoffs can be the toughest so that can explain why the Devs-Cats went 7.

  121. JimboWoodside on

Maybe Philly was more ripe for the taking than we expected? After they did away with Pittsburgh in a pretty overwhelming way, they seemed to just fall apart!

  122. JimboWoodside on

    >>>Tonight Marty will only feast on orange foods post-game in honor of Mr. Snider and Comcast (Cheetos, Cheez-its, etc.).

A couple of gallons of Orange Chicken from some local Chinese restaurant…

  123. Wicky© You better run mojito!! LGT!!! on

if you are looking for a cool spot to relax in D.C., there is a great Irish singer usually at the Dubliner right by Union station or Chadwicksof Georgetown is also great!!

  124. LaTONYa from Miami on

I really doubt the half crowd thing, Lev. Devils fans can’t even get a split during the regular season at MSG.

  125. JimboWoodside on

I can’t believe that that ham & egger Clarkson has the game winning goal in this game and game 2..

  126. I guess people of City of Brotherly Love thought their team was winning the SC after they out scored the Pens mightily

  127. The Flyers, by all accounts, played like absolute garbage in this series. So we can’t really tell just how good the Devils and Uncle Daddy are.

The Flyers wet the bed against the Pens and showed absolutely nothing since then.

Here’s to hoping we can win tomorrow’s game. I’d really rather not go through another Game 7. Especially with how this series has come down to a bounce or two in each and every game.

  128. JimboWoodside on

*Mr.* Snider is going to force Hartnell to undergo a complete Brazilian body waxing session after he played like a dog in this series… ;-D

  129. Olga Folkyerself on

    Flyers are O-U-T!!!!!

Absolutely nothing wrong about that! And in front of their own fans, SWEET!

  130. LaTONYa from Miami on

Ugh. The Devils really disgust me. They played a good series, but the Flyers were atrocious.

  131. JimboWoodside on

Very un-Flyer-like performance in this series, violence-wise. Not a spirited performance at ALL!

  132. Miserable Philly fans going home unhappy tonight…

    That’s ALWAYS a reason to smile. :-)

  133. Elmer Fudd is a smart GM. I think he’ll find a way. He always seems to when he’s might lose a player. Also, maybe Parise shows some loyalty, and gives them a break instead of looking for the biggest contract.

  134. JimboWoodside on

Well, it will only hurt the Debs and their fans even more painfully when we dispatch the Craps and then knock the Swamp Rats out..

  135. Stranger Nation on

Jimbo – they mentioned how the Devs were instructed to not get drawn into the tactics of the filth who took the Pens off their game and out of the playoffs. Seems like it worked well.

    Tomorrow is the Clincher!!

  136. JimboWoodside on

Why should Parise take less money to stay in the swamp? I’d be very surprised if he would do that.

  137. Flyers did nothing to prepare the devils for what’s about to happen. Hey debbies have you had to compete for every inch of ice ever in this series? Talk about a goalie sapping his team of compete!!! Let’s finish off these caps and show the debbies and their 500 fans that make it into msg what playoff hockey looks like. Then for two more home games 3 and 4 at the pebble where blue clad maniacs will show up full throat to make 1994 seem like 18 years ago!!!! Let’s Go Rangers!!!!

  138. JimboWoodside on

I did hear that, Stranger – but to be truthful, I didn’t see a whole lot of the stuff that Philly usually does in this series. Maybe I missed it all, but they didn’t look very vicious or dirty in this series at all. Did you see much of that?

  139. I dont think Jagr resigns either. This may have been it for him. Even though he has said he wants to play again next year I dont think he’d go to a small market team.

  140. I don’t know if the Flyers were just plain bad, but the Devils completely dominated them for four straight games. They look scary good now.

  141. LaTONYa from Miami on

The Devils sure seemed to be laboring on the ice after some of those hits, and then they were miraculously back on the ice the next shift… I really do hate them.

  142. JimboWoodside on

And now the Debs are *Legendary Hockey Gods*, according to the NBC nitwits. They sure change their tune quickly!

  143. I’m hoping there is an increased sense of urgency to close out tomorrow night. So the devils don’t have 5 days to rest up.

  144. JimboWoodside on

Jagr didn’t look like the same player in this series – maybe he’s been injured, or maybe he just ran out of gas, finally.

  145. The flyers forgot to compete. Flyer fan cousin just texted me if I have seen the flyers since game two. Gonna be eye opening for new jersey about four minutes into game one when they realize the rangers are a whole different animal than this sad effort. My god did bryzgalov torpedo his squad

  146. iWicky "Rupp yours". LGT on

I hope parise stays in nj, I just don’t want another former devil on this team….bad ju ju

  147. Give Marty 5 days off he might go overboard at the all you can eat buffet at Beefsteak Charlie’s and gain 15 lbs

  148. Think of the history between rangers and devils this season and past seasons and I would really look forward to a devils series. Would also be good to have an opponent where there is a natural hate. End it tomorrow boys, can’t wait!

  149. JimboWoodside on

Totally, Matteau! That’s why I’m so ticked off at Philly – they didn’t even extend the series long enough to make the Devs need to work harder.

  150. Can You Hear Us? (Yes, they did) on

As I said at the start of the playoffs:

    Beware the Devils.

I DO NOT like the matchup NYR vs. Derbils… AT ALL, for the Rangers’ sake.

  151. Stranger Nation on

Jimbo – didn’t see much filthy dirty tactics until tonite when Rinaldo had a vicious hit away from play on Zubrus (I think). They called in kneeing but it was more like a blind hip check when Zubrus had gotten rid of the puck 8 seconds earlier. very cheap stuff. Also so Hartnell cross check Zubrus in back of the head at the end when he was freezing puck, but those are desperate times in the last minute and no holds barred.

so we get the 8, 7 and 6 seeds on our way to possibly play an 8 seed in Cup – crazy POs this season.

  152. you mean like Stralman, who was in the Debbie camp on a PTO, and then the Rangers signed him when they let him go.

  153. JimboWoodside on

Wicky, whether he signs here or not, I want to see him leave the swamp, and the eastern conference, if we don’t sign him.

  154. Olga Folkyerself on

Well the Flyers looked unbeatable when they dispatched the Pens. Now the devils look unbeatable? Nawww. Playing style effectiveness varies with the different matchups. The debbies will look totally beatable when we get through with them.

  155. The Rangers should not, and we as fans should not, fear the Devils.

The level of hate between the Rangers and Devils is palpable. And one thing has been cemented over the last few years:

    Hank outplays Marty.

Take away the 2006 sweep and we can handle the Devils. It will not be easy by a longshot, it would be an epic series…

But I do not fear the Devils.

  156. Stranger Nation on

Flyers D was exposed – Debbies dumped, chased and then pounded them. That and the sieve in net.

  157. Can You Hear Us? (Yes, they did) on

Philly would’ve been beaten by the Rangers in 5 or 6 games, too. Philly’s defense/goaltending is by far the worst of the 8 playoff teams in round #2. They had to go.

I would almost say the Derbils got a break by playing Philly.

Also, the Derbils seamed to have no ‘fear” of Philly’s supposed great offense. I saw no fear, only quiet confidence from the Derbils.

I’m afraid the Devils are back to perennial playoff contender form, after only a one-year rebuilding period! It takes most teams 10-15 years to rebuild contending teams, it took the Derbils one year of missed playoffs. Lou Lamoriello is SICK.

  158. JimboWoodside on

Yes, Stranger – until tonight, they hadn’t played that way – and even tonight, they didn’t resort to that dirty stuff until they were behind, and kinda saw “the writing on the wall”…

  159. We still have a job to do. That is to finish the Caps and FINALLY get some payback for the last couple of seasons.

Then we can get to work on taking out the Devils.

The Flyers couldn’t beat anyone the way they played that series. Give the Devils credit where it’s due, but they beat a team that was BEGGING to get beat.

  160. Per Djoos (Stay thirsty, my friends) on

The biggest thing the Rangers will have against the Debbies is Hank vs. Marty the Whale.

Hank’s Rangers have had success against the Derbils and there’s no reason why that cant continue.

  161. sometimes long layoff work against teams ask ottawa in 07 waiting 8 days to play anaheim in cup finals.

should the rangers go 7 and play sat then next monday for game 1 the devs would have full week off. perhaps lose there mojo they have right now

  162. geez, you would think the Debbies are all saints after this win, the way that NBC is hyping them up.
