Sorry about that outage last night. Don’t ask me what happened, because I have no byfuglien idea.

A few notes on the Rangers’ 2-1 triple OT win in Game 3…
* Was the fifth longest game in franchise history at 114:41

* Was the second longest game resulting in a win for the Rangers all-time (Mar. 26, 1932; 119:32, 4-3 win at Montreal)
* The last triple overtime game for the Rangers was a 3-2 win vs. Chicago on Apr. 29, 1971, in Game 6 of their Semifinals series at Madison Square Garden. Pete Stemkowski tallied the game-winning goal at 1:29 of triple overtime to send that series into a Game 7.

The Rangers tied the franchise record for most shots on goal in a playoff game with 49 in Game 3, while the Blueshirts and Capitals combined for 95 shots in the contest. The 95 shots are the most in an NHL game since Boston and Philadelphia combined for 95 shots on goal on May 2, 2011. The Blueshirts registered 22 total shots on goal after regulation which, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is the most by the Rangers in the expansion era (since 1967). The two teams combined for 39 shots in the three OT periods, which is also a franchise record for most shots on goal after regulation.

Rangers rookie Chris Kreider notched his first goal at Madison Square Garden with the game-winner, and added his first career assist in Game 1. He became the youngest Rangers player to record two points in a playoff game since Niklas Sundstrom on May 11, 1996, and the first Blueshirt rookie to register a multi-point effort in the postseason since Brandon Dubinsky on May 1, 2008. Kreider is tied for first in the NHL with two game-winning goals in the playoffs, and is the first New York rookie to register two game-winning goals in the postseason since Mike Allison in the 1981 playoffs.

Henrik Lundqvist has held opponents to two or fewer goals in seven of 11 games this postseason, including five games in which he has held opponents to one goal or less. He has allowed 12 goals total in the last seven games, posting a 4-3 record with a 1.53 GAA and .939 Sv% over the span.

New York leads the league with 387 hits in the playoffs. The Blueshirts have five players ranked in the top 14 in the NHL – Ryan Calahan (1st, 55), Brian Boyle (T-7th, 35), Michael Del Zotto (T-7th, 35), Brandon Prust (T-7th, 35), and Dan Girardi (T-14th, 32).

The Rangers rank second in the NHL with 232 blocked shots in the playoffs, paced by Dan Girardi (43) and Ryan McDonagh (34) who rank first and second in the league, respectively. The Blueshirts also have three forwards who rank in the top four in blocked shots among forwards, including Ryan Callahan (T-1st, 19), Ruslan Fedotenko (3rd, 15) and Brad Richards (4th, 14).

Henrik Lundqvist continues to climb the Rangers’ all-time playoff leaders list in several goaltending categories. He posted a 39-save shutout, his fourth career in the playoffs, in a 1-0 win in Game 3 of the Conference Quarterfinals at Ottawa, to pass Andy Aitkenhead for fifth place on the Rangers’ all-time playoff shutouts list. Lundqvist passed John Vanbiesbrouck for third in franchise history with his 39th career playoff appearance in Game 4 at Ottawa, while his 25-save effort in a 3-2 win in Game 6 at Ottawa moved him past Dave Kerr for third all-time with 18 playoff victories.

Chris Kreider has joined a short list of NHL players for playoff scoring proficiency without having skated in a regular season game, being one of seven such players with at least two goals and one of five players with at least three points in the postseason before playing in a regular season contest. *courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau

Owe you an apology on the devs vs flys. I’m still stunned. I don’t understand how this flyers team has been contained so well.

You called it though, and very much in gentlemanly fashion. I applaud you. Have a good day.

  2. True fans, thank you. But truth be told, chances of any of us calling any series this year right are very similar to each other. Which is just slightly higher than calling it right by my 84 year mother, who I think last time watched hockey in 1961. Nobody really knows. Experts who spend all their lives covering hockey still can’t get it right. We are all just casual fans, amateurs. But it’s fun, that’s for sure

It doesn’t matter what happened last night.

What WILL happen tonight is that the NYRangers will go down like the Titanic.

  4. when I watch these devils, I hate to say that i think cup bound. That was a devastating, dominant win vs. the Filth. I know they match up tougher against us, but still.

they also FINISHED their business winning a key game four that makes it easier for their job to get done AND get some rest.

I believe we will beat Craps, but we will be the last team done, licking our wounds, and rushing into a rested team, again. Not good. Not good.

    Let’s win tonight!!!

  5. True fans bleed rw&b on

In simple 2D or in the luxury of three times the price pleather seating in 3D, Miami?

  6. Rangers need to bring their “A” game tonight:

ASSAULT the Craps D men, pinning them in their own zone for long periods of time.

ATTACK the net making it difficult for Holtby to see and deflecting pucks past him that find the twine.

ASSUME defensive responsibility as five man units that stifle the Craps attack and clear our defensive zone post haste!

  7. The reason the devs are having such success against the flyers is because they are playing our style against them….contain/attack/forecheck….its the reason I would rather play flyers than devs…and also the fact the the universe sux in net and Brokeduer can get hot, even if they are hot flashes at this point with his age and all….

  8. Brendumb Shamahan on

It would be great if the “Department of player recklessness” would be available to the media to explain exactly why Ovechkin’s launching himself into Girardi’s head is not suspendable offense. Especially since he was already suspended for that.

If it was Girardi hitting Ovi we’d be discussing how long the suspension was, not if there was one.

the devils are zoned in defensively. they shut down phil in that 3rd per as far as chances that shocked me the most. they are dialed in right now.

I thought the Giroux play was simple incidental contact where he braced himself for a big collision.

There’s a billion photos that wi

  16. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

..will prove his skates are on the ice!
    Plus zubrus wasn’t injured!

    And giroux is a superstar!
    Plus what’s his history?

    A hearing here is unfathomable

  17. Yes! Giroux talk.

I think the Giroux hit is suspendable for one reason: He was head-hunting. He was mad about an earlier hit and he went after him. The game was out of reach and he just targeted him and hit him well after the puck was released and hit Zubrus high and in the head.

The NHL is now in a Quandary given that Ovechkin and Giroux (the two best players still playing) are both in hot water for hits to the head. That they will never be suspended for.

True Blue – you bring up the perfect points. What’s the history? This point kills me. Guys that don’t get suspended or fined or whatever will *never* have a history if the NHL continues to refuse to penalize them. Giroux is a dirty piece of Carcillo but he has not been “in trouble” for it yet. And until he is, he never will.

  18. I’ve become resigned to the fact that if we don’t make dumb mistakes, we stand a great chance of going all the way (at least to L.A.) and if we continue to hand them the puck, we don’t deserve to win the Cup this year anyway. Is that a logical way to look at things, or is it a case of me mentally preparing to be let down?

  19. True Blue Mike (Del Zotto's Swagger) on

Giroux will get fined $2,500 but he should be suspended at least one game.

  20. True fans bleed rw&b on

So true. To me, the another issue is that all too often guys with history get nothing (Ovie), or just one game for major intent (Neal of Penguins). But now they’re going after Giroux? Why now?! Why him? I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once, but the logic still somehow escapes me.

  21. True Fans: The Ovechkin thing is mind-boggling. He has been fined, and suspended 3 games this year for the *exact* same hit. Leaving his skates and making contact with the head. By Raffi Torres rules this suspension, should be 10 regular season games or 5-6 playoff games. Call me nuts but Ovechkin has a *real* history of this Carcillo. And they will let him get away with it without even commenting on it because he’s important to his team and the NHL.

But Hagelin gets……3? WWEber gets….0? huh?

  22. Giroux will not get suspended with his team on the brink of elimination and Zubrus suffering, “no apparent injury.” But honestly, it’s such a joke. If you don’t suspend someone in this situation you fail to send a message.

Look at what Nashville did to its own players. THAT sent a message.

  23. When is Torts going to play Eminger and sit Bickel, since Bickel just sits anyway? Not that that will greatly affect the outcome tonight. Just seems like Bickel’s play leads to a goal a little too often in these playoffs, and then Torts doesn’t even play him. So he’s basically useless in two ways.
We must get the first goal in the first 10 minutes at MSG tonight by flooding the Crap’s zone with bodies in front and bangers in the corners.
Watch your shots D-Men and take care to start hitting the net from on high!

  24. fat guy

You say if we don’t keep handing them the puck……..

Giving them a 60 40 % chance to take the puck when we dump and chase, that’s pretty much like giving it to them.

If they commence with that nonsense again, you’ll know it’s gonna go that way the moment that they have the puck and start toward the Cap zone.

I don’t get it…these guys have excellent puck carriers…why not take those few extra strides that bring you into the zone, ( holding on to the puck) and set up and blast away at the net. Just take a look and keep count of how often the Caps dump and chase,(or any other team). That’s such old AHL hockey

Puck control is what’s gonna win (or lose ) this game.

  25. Doodie Machetto, Get well Tony and Miami Pimp on

In all seriousness, Shanahan’s department isn’t about “player safety” it’s about limiting NHL’s liability.

If a player gets hurt, the NHL suspends the offender. This way, if they get sued later on, they can say “that was against the rules and we suspended him!”

If there’s no injury, they don’t care.

  26. Great Point Doodie, Esq. I never thought of it that way. I guess you’re right. Fans cheered when Ovie hit Girardi in the head but since Girardi wasn’t hurt, it’s good for the game.

  27. Giroux was having a meltdown on the ice before he smacks Zubrus, has to get a hearing. Should be a game.Clear head shot.AO was right in front of me and then saw it on a replay, working against him, leaving his feet, puck went by, repeat offender. I dont think he hit the head as much as everyone else(know im going to get killed) but it was bad. Fine no suspension, what was worse in that game was the non Cally call, Boyle non call and the Hags call. Having said all that we still deserved to lose. Lucky it wasnt 3-0 in the first and not nearly enough offense for a playoff game. In the end I DONT beleive the Caps beat us twice more.

  28. BTW in no way am I defending Shammy or Bettman. Horrible on Neil, Weber, Hags and so on just a joke. But let’s control what we control.

  29. Ovechcant's Crooked Nose on

I dont get it. It used to be if you left your feet on a hit it was suspendable. Ovechcant leaves his feet but no hearing. Giroux doesnt leave his feet and he gets a hearing and probable suspension. Not saying Giroux doesnt deserve one, just cant understand how the league doesnt even look at Ovie’s head hunting.

Also…I love this blog! Carp does a great job and all you Boneheads are tremendous!

  30. I had the rangers in 6 games this series but now feel that the rangers will lose this series because I don’t trust the refs or the nhl. It’s bad enough the rangers have to beat the caps but the refs also. It’s also unbelievable that the devils look like they are going to represent the stanely cup in the eastern conference. If that happens I know one thing, I won’t be watching the games.

  31. A Bruin’s fan just stopped by my office and gave me a Rangers shirt he got when he went to see a Rangers game.

    2012 Playoffs: Believe

  32. The “what kind of history” excuse for not suspending is ridiculous. What kind of history did Hagelin have?

If the infraction is a suspendable infraction then it shouldn’t matter who committed it and what their history is. But, I suspect that you guys already agree with that statement.

  33. Ding! Ding! Ding! I believe we have a winner! I agree with that statement 100%. It’s all a sham to call off the lawyers.

“Shanahan’s department isn’t about “player safety” it’s about limiting NHL’s liability.
If a player gets hurt, the NHL suspends the offender. This way, if they get sued later on, they can say “that was against the rules and we suspended him!”
If there’s no injury, they don’t care”

  34. Gravy, Not Scored Upon on

So Giroux goes after Zubrus’ head after he got hit? Guess the suspension determining factor will be where Fedotenko’s stick was at the time of the incident.

Devils have forechecked well in the series, which is the same reason the Rangers had so much success against them in the regular season.

  35. True fans bleed rw&b – The Flyers are finally showing their true colors. The fact of the matter is, they’re not that good. They’re a team that was literally built around Pronger that can’t play a lick of defense without him. The only reason they’re still in the mix is because they were pitted against the only other team in the playoffs with an even worse defense –Pittsburgh. There’s a reason the Rangers were 6-0 against them this year, and it’s because the Flyers simply can’t get it going against teams that play sound defense.

  36. Leaving your feet is different that hitting the head. Two seperate things, now the question is did AO do both? But just leaving your feet for a shoulder check is not suspendable. Giroux on the other hand did not leave his feet but premediated a head shot on the Debbie. A suspension should come his way. BTW neither are getting suspended welcome to the NHL

  37. Ovechcant's Crooked Nose on

Devils in the Cup Finals = me jumping off a very tall building

  38. Ovechkin left his feet and hit Girardi in the head. He was previously, this year, suspended 3-Games for leaving his feet and hitting the head. Am I surprised he has no hearing? Nope. Is it a joke that he doesn’t have a hearing and does it feed into exactly what is wrong the this NHL Player Safety garbage? Yes

  39. Ovechcant's Crooked Nose on

Regarding Ovechkin….I actually heard a so called “expert” on the radio say that Ovie didnt leave his feet. His toe was still on the ice, therefore no suspension.

  40. The Flyers and Laviolette never struck me as the most mature group based on 24/7. I’m not surprised to see them implode. Just sucks that the
    Devils benefit

Tonight’s game is a must win to me. No chance we come back again like last round. Rangers have severe problems offensively and are making Holtby look unbeatable.

I still think we can win this series. But only if we win tonight. Rangers played like crap for most of Saturday so I’m hoping they pick it up. But if they lose I think they’re out in six. And THAT will be the ultimate waste of a golden chance considering how the favorites have dropped out in these playoffs

Lets Go Rangers! Make a statement TONIGHT!

In a good way of course

  41. I love that the Rangers win, and shot blocking is a huge part of that (at least, until now), but Larry Brooks is right: it’s boring, prevents offensive excitement, and stifles talent. Not sure what could be done, but a game without it would be far better hockey.

Yeah, I guess Girardi would have had to play dead for a few minutes to get the league to even discuss talking to Ovie.

  42. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Girardi = need to go to Juliard School to learn how to fake near death symptoms

  43. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Girardi = as good an actor or better than Zubrus = Ovechkin gets a 1-2 day suspension

  44. Gravy, Not Scored Upon on

Ovechcant, I have heard this as well, and Caps fans (and Shanny) of course are using this as their rallying cry for no suspension.

Even if the toe was on the ice, is that half inch really the difference between suspension and no suspension? I’m glad he’s OK, but it would have been interesting to see if he was suspended had Girardi been concussed. Actually, he wouldn’t have been.

I know we all say that you can’t suspend based on injury/no injury, but even with criminal law, the penalties are based on the severity of the outcome. Attempted murder won’t get you as much time as murder. However, if you shoot someone and miss a vital organ, did you not really intend to kill them?

  45. Interesting Larry brooks article today on blocked shots. Much as we owe much of Ranger success to this strategy, I have to admit as a hockey fan I’m not crazy about it. Becomes more clear when we play a team like the Caps.

Plus on top of it being boring it is just a matter of time before some poor defender gets his face caved in and life ruined by a slapshot. I cringe every time I see one of these guys go down on their knees at the top of the circle on a point shot. There is no skill or way to prevent that from happening only luck.

  46. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Gravy, Giroux was head hunting, based on his frustration with a non-call and the way this series is turning out.

Ovechkin, a repeat offender, left his feet, but didn’t ‘crush’ Girardi as he could. I agree with Duguay, even though I hate Frankenstein, but it seemed he was more trying to avoid a hit, but realized late, “ah, why not go and bump him”. THe puck was away from the play and moving away, but it was not, IMHO, headhunting. THe fact he is a repeater, left his feet, and the puck was moving away from the play should be enough for this kangaroo court to, at least, have a ‘hearing’.

Chris Neil WAS headhunting. He did not leave his feet. It is TOTAL BS that he is ‘not a repeat offender’ becuase he has been leaving his feet and hurting guys, ending careers for years. THe fact that he doesn’t get suspended by this kangaroo court is irrlevant because they are partial and inconsistent.

  47. Series is a best of three with two out of three at home. Brand new game tonight. Saturday is done and gone. If the rangers play hard, they will win the game tonight.

  48. CTBlueshirt on

Blocked shots also mean that’s the team that doesn’t have the puck most of the time. Winning the puck possession battle and Henrik maintaining his normal play of the postseason should in general payoff.

  49. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

We all know that part of the league’s indifference to our team is the way Tort’s speaks up (or did) openly about the horrendously inconsistent officiating. For the league to put our players lives, careers, in harms way because of that is sickening.

  50. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Joe, that is a good view, and a totally clean on the body hit by Girardi

  51. Matty, the way the league is run is a joke. This would never fly in the NFL or the other sports. The problem is, there is still this “old boy network” that runs the league. It may take another generation or so to move past this…

  52. Matty, you dont think the right elbow got up at all? Look at the way the head snaps back.

  53. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

I look forward to being there tonight. I look forward to the fans being ready for this one. They can call it what they want. I know our boys have to call it just another game.

Tonight….is the season. We MUST win tonight

(Basically, I am saying that because my heart won’t last through another game 7 against this Cap team)

  54. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

ANF, absolutely agree. ANd if you are a ‘Don Cherry’ fan, you’re ok. Everyone else is a ‘Euro-pansie’

For them to single out a coach because he says things that the ‘boys’ don’t like is one thing. I understand how that undermines their league. Don’t mess, however, with the playing careers of our players.

Should Hagelin be a ‘criminal’ and have a ‘record’ now? Really?
Is Boyle’s concussion not proof positive, in a league which is telling us that the ‘severity of the injury dictates the penalty’, that Neil should have been suspended?
Was the breaking of Boyle’s stick not the same infraction called on Hags that lead to Washington’s goal in game 4?

I do realize the inconsisitencies go on league wide. BUt I do feel they take more liberties against our team. No, not because it’s New York. But because the coach ‘needs to be punished’ for what he said

  55. Fran – When I said “hand them the puck”, I was actually talking about real mistakes, as opposed to a strategic decision. Personally, I don’t like the dump-and-chase game, because puck possession is so difficult as it is, let alone when you are basically giving up the puck only to try to regain it. Soemtimes, it seems like they’re punting on second down in the hope of winning the field position battle. That being said, if Torts thinks it’s the best way to utilize our personnel all the way to the Canyon of Heroes, then who am I to disagree? Our game is to punish defenseman and wear people down, so…..I just hope it works because Washington’s size has become a big factor in this series.

  56. the gorilla will have to go to the game tonight. He’s good luck. If that old woman dances tonight, someone push her over the railing. She worse luck tHan “mush” in Bronx Tale.

  57. Agreed Matty. Also, we have to face the fact that no matter how far this team goes, it is simply not built to win a series in 4 or 5 games. As Carp mentioned the other day, it is liekly that the Rangers could play the maximum or near maximum amount of 28 playoffs games (exclusive of OT periods)

  58. I, personally, really thought we could win this in 5. I thought we would get a 3-1 lead against the Capitals and I saw the Rangers stepping on their throat tonight at home and walking away with a chance to rest up. I was obviously very, very wrong. I guess I have to reevaluate how I look at this team a bit.

  59. Manny- I agree. As fans, we were so distracted with the Ottawa series that we didn;t really appreciate what Washington was doing to Boston. I wonder if the B’s feel the same way we do right now – that without 2 or 3 specific giveaways, we would have swept already.

  60. I honestly don’t think Shanahan is in charge, if you look at how the suspensions were in the beginning of the year and how they quickly went back to the Campbell era discipline(non-discipline) it seems “they” got to him and he is just a puppet now. Based on the type of player he was I am surprised he would allow this to happen.

  61. Manny any team that is built around its best player being its goalie simply can’t dominate when it wants to. Even with Richards and Gabby this team is not built to be able to turn up the pressure and score- they don’t dominate, they outlast. Hank gives them the ability to do that. And Torts gets it, he knows he doesn’t have the horses so he established that this is how they have to play to win.

  62. I really don’t see any reason, aside from a horrible first period on Saturday, that we couldn’t be up 3-1. Or that the Capital couldn’t be up 3-1 for that matter. These games could really have gone either way.

The Caps new system of collapsing and blocking and playing Defense is remarkable. Sure, they have become a new team blah blah blah. But here’s the rub: I hate them. They always knock us out of the playoffs.

  63. I wonder if Ovie was asked to play Johnny Depp’s Barnabas Collins role in the new Dark Shadows movie?

  64. They do what the Rangers do but have better top end offense to take advantage of mistakes. I still think we win in 7 because of Hank but it became pretty clear after Game 2 it could go either way.

  65. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

guys, it is so true that we are efficient defensively, led by our terrific goalie and defensive style of play.

This year, we are a 6 or 7 game series type team. However, I look forward to the years to come as we get more efficient at defense AND build a team with more offensive snipers. I think we could win in 5 or 4.

As it stands, I do worry about this year. Torts has played those he is most willing to work with, which is, essentially 3 1/3 lines and 4 -5 defensemen. We are into the 90+ game area. The two playoff matchups we’ve had have been grueling, grinding, hard hitting. The Devils, for example have had a relatively less physical time with both matchups.

Are our guys able to sustain hits like McD had in game 3, like Staal keeps getting in the first 4, like Girardi got from Ovie in game 4, and keep ticking, overplayed as they are? Henrik should be rested, but we played hard all 82 regular season games, too.

I hope so. This will be a true test of their will.

  66. If Giroux gets suspended it is just another example of what a joke the NHL is becoming with these head shots. How can Ovechkins hit not warrant even a review when he clearly left his feet but the GIroux hit gets reviewed?
    It just makes no sense!

In the meantime, the Rangers better come out hard tonight. It really will suck if we lose to what really is an inferior team!

  67. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Let’s not forget this Caps team ousted the defending champs. Champions know how to win. They don’t go down easily.

I thought we were better than this team in the beginning. This is a close close series. Either way it could go.

It would be sad to see officiating effect the outcome. I hope they let us play starting tonight.

Andrew, our game, all year, is what we moved away from in game 4. We need to hit their ‘d’ men hard and often. Booming hits. And dump and chase, get in front of the net. Hard work No easy way. We need to play regular season Ranger hockey. Finish your checks, boys. Finish ’em.

    Or are they too tired?

  68. Interesting stat from the Larry Brooks article today. Kind of goes against the conspiracy theorists…

“Penalty calls throughout the playoffs have been arbitrary, never more so late in games. But the fact is that the Rangers have been awarded 14 power plays in the third period and overtime while their opponents have been awarded seven, and the further truth is that the Blueshirts are 1-for-14 and the opposition is 2-for-7.”

  70. Giroux was hunting, reckless (at best), and MUST be disciplined. Ovie was borderline.

    Not this year, Manny…

  72. We already won the first best of three. Let’s just do it again. We don’t like losing back to back.

Although with the Senators we went: 1-1-1-2-2 and won in 7. I am hoping we go 1-1-1-1-2 and win in 6. Make sense?

  73. If the Rangers actually had a powerplay that scored I would be ore concerned about missed call . . . as for calls that are made against Rangers if the Rangers committed the penalty then they deserve the call. . . .if you don’t want to kill a penalty then don’t commit one. . . so a slash on Boyle doesn’t get called. .. that doesn’t mean that Hagelin can slash one of the Capitals. . . . . .they got to play smart for a whole 60 minutes of hockey. Not waste the first period and then come on strong in the second and parts of the third.

The universe hasn’t played like smith, quick or hank, but he’s given his team a chance to win every game and they’ve let him down.

Carp said it. It’s been a little hard to believe.

Philly needs to just get shots. Brodeur is *EASILY* the worst goalie still standing (flopping?) but Philly is playing impotent hockey.

  76. Could MSG handle FOUR game 7’s in a Cup winning season? I know the vendors can, but what about everyone else?

  77. Guys – I’ve decided I’m going to auction off my handle “Fat Guy” to the second highest bidder…anyway, I’m not so fat anymore…more big-boned or husky

  78. CLASSIC Torts:

John Tortorella doesn’t remember Matt Carkner’s name. Do you?: “I think all series take on a life of their own. To me, this (Capitals) series has been an even harder series to play than the Ottawa series. You’ve got the crap that went on after Game 2 (vs. Ottawa) – *I forget the player’s name suckering our guy* – and all that stuff ends up being part of it. You guys think it changes the series. This has been a straight-ahead, hard series and – in most facets of it – harder than the Ottawa series.”

  79. We shouldn’t be so sure the Rangers are going to win this game! If they come out and attack like they should then we have a solid chance for victory. If the game is anything like the first 4 games of this series then either team could have a chance to win.

  80. Matteau, sorry, but the Ovie hit was not borderline, he left his feet and hit Girardi in the head. THis is exactly the hit they say they want to eliminate. Intent is not supposed to be considered.

That being said, its true the Rangers cant take bad penalties and think they are going to win but things do need to be called both ways out there. I know Brooks points out the blueshirts have had a lot of late powerplays and its true if they score at all then we dont have this discussion but thats no excuse for the Refs missing the blantant trip on Callahan that led directly to the Green goal.

  81. High Desert Roberto on

Does he have a history of hits like this? Yes
Has he been fined in the past for hits like this? Yes
Has he been suspended for hits like this in the past? Yes
Did he leave his feet? Yes
Did he target the head? It appears that’s where the contact was.

Furthermore, Girardi is an All Star, but that doesn’t matter when it’s a Ranger. In fact none of it matters as long as the infraction occurs on a Ranger.

Want evidence? Giroux has a hearing scheduled for a possible fine/suspension. Ovie can rest. If G hit OV, Shenanigans would have been on the phone to Slats before the end of the period

  82. Nope.

As far as that idea that shot-blocking = boring… How boring was Game 3? How boring were those 51 regular-season wins? How boring was Game 7?

I admit this isn’t Edmonton Oilers hockey from the ’80s, but geez, it works.

  83. iWicky "Rupp yours". LGT on

So ovi doesn’t get suspended, but our blog does last night? WTF is sybilahans deal?

  84. I think it is possible that Ovechkin got away with it because he is a repeat offender. Since he has a well documented disciplinary history, there is no way they could’ve only fined or sat him for 1 game. Based on his history it would have to of been for multiple games and there was no way they were going to sit their poster boy for multiple games, so they let him off the hook completely. Sadly I think if it had been his first offense, it would’ve been easier to discipline him. Sounds backwards I know but I think there could be some truth to it.

  85. High Desert Roberto on

Ovechkin is such a $@%!$@%! hockey player. Completely one-dimensional, selfish, childish even. When he first came to the league you figured he was young and still figuring it out then you realize he is just an immature, reckless player. Hopefully he never experiences championship glory. Players like OV should not get ahead in a team oriented game like hockey. Rangers in 6

  87. High Desert Roberto on

that being said, the NYR cant worry about chasing that jackassen all over the ice tonight

  88. Carp yes some pivotal playoff games because will be exciting but a lot of that has to do with context. Truth is even those games could be better if there was more offense.

What about the concern that it’s a matter of time before someone gets their face caved in? Ever been hit with a slapshot?

  89. High Desert Roberto

Say what you want about Ovechkin, but without him the Rangers sweep this series. He won them game 2 on a shot that maybe 3 other players in the league can take. Same thing with the first goal in game 4. Oh and he almost won it for them in game 3.

Ovechkin might be a handful to deal with, but few players in the history of the sport are more talented than he is…

We should be thankful his idiot coach isn’t playing him 25 minutes a night…

  90. By the way when the Devils were winning cups with that boring brand of hockey they said the same thing, that we wouldn’t be complaining if we were winning, and we said yes we would, it stinks. The league changed the rules because even the league knew it stunk. This will change as well.

  91. you can’t change the rules to prevent people from blocking shots. That’s just ridiculous…

  92. HockeymanRangers on

I just played the Tort’s press conference after Saturday’s game. I’m sorry but he is a real _ick when it comes to these PC’s. He should be fined for not saying enough. Is there any other NHL coach at this point that is as bad as Tort’s is?? Oh well I guess he does a lot of other things right you can’t be perfect. A muster for tonight.

  93. but, Matteau, they would not have won Game 3 or Game 7 or many of the 51 they won during the season if they didn’t play that way. that’s how this team has to be successful. it has clearly shown that it can’t rely on its offense and power play to win. it has to defend first and foremost, and when you talk to scouts you hear that’s what opponents most fear about the Rangers … the way they give you nothing along the walls, and especially in the shooting/passing lanes.

so, they could open it up and get more exciting and be playing golf right now instead of Game 5.

  94. Hockeyman, worse … don’t know if you saw my explanation yesterday … he went to the press conference earlier than scheduled knowing the NY writers were in the lockerroom waiting for Girardi … then cut it off after two questions and left before the NY writers arrived (the writers were told that he was going to the presser in two minutes, immediately went to the room, which is 20 seconds away, and he was gone already).

  95. Yev Kassem on

I love Torts and what he has done with this team. I think the players really respect him and would go to the mattresses for him!

But, I think his press conference performance after game 4 was BUSH LEAGUE ( hat tip to Miami Pimp)

I am not sure why, but I am more nervous about this game than I was about Game 7 V. Ottawa! that is not a good sign. I think we didn’t give the caps enough credit. They beat the Champs in 7 games!

Oh well… Tonight is a statement game!

    shift by shift…

    Period by Period…

    Game by Game…

  96. For a coach that demands his players play the right way and conduct themselves the right way, he’s embarassing him self.

He’s done a remarkable job. There’s no need to be a jerk.

  97. Am I the only one that literally does not care about Torts and his behavior at press conferences?

I mean no disrespect to the media guys. Just don’t care about him being a jerk at all.

It’s the same reason Belichek gets away with so much. Just win.

  99. Gravy, Not Scored Upon on

I disagree that more offense is exciting. You can’t duplicate the drama of a low-scoring tied game where one mistake is the difference. And besides, half of the dumb Buttman rules were a result of trying to “create more offense”.

  100. Gravy, Not Scored Upon on

Oh, and the reason they lost Saturday, was because wasn’t drinking beer. So blame NBC for the early start and me having to watch my 2 year old.

  101. I think he is being a complete jack-wagon and embarrassing himself; that being said I couldn’t care less.

  102. We all have parts of our job that we hate and wish we didn’t have to do. He is just being a bigger baby about it then most.

  103. IMO, everything Torts does, he does for a reason. You have to admit the guy can motivate people. His post- and pre-game interviews are all calculated responses based on what he feels motivates/drives his team. Torts knew exactly what he was doing on Saturday after the game.

  104. Carp, good story…just got back from Turks and Caicos…spent a week there with the fam…and who did I meet and talk to for most part of the week…none other than Matt Cooke….the piece of carcillo was vacationing with his fam too….he was actually a bit leary to talk to me after I told him i was a die hard ranger fan..but warmed up eventually…outside of hockey, he is actually a pretty nice guy…wasnt interested at all in talking about hockey or the playoffs….

  105. Matty'WeWinTonight'Boy on

Ok, Ok, with game time 5 1/2 hours away, I admit I am getting nervous. Calm down, I think to myself. Calm down. Not the biggest thing in the world if they lose tonight and Wednesday and are done.

Yes, true, but man, has this run been an unexpected (from the perspective of the beginning of the year at pre-season) pleasure. What a great time! What a great story! What great moments of mostly up and some down.

Just not ready for it to be over yet, ok?

  106. Maybe he can have Shanahan intervene?

“On Saturday night, at approximately 11:17 P.M., Paulina Gretzky, a player for no one, tweeted some pictures of herself in violation of rule #1 by TGO that his daughter is sacred. Paulina is a repeat offender and has, in the last 18 months, been suspended from such behavior. Based on this evidence, and pictures I am forbidden to cite as evidence, the NHL Committee on player’s daughters’ safety has decided to suspend Paulina indefinitely.”

  110. Do not like the general feel of the blog today. I get a sense that people are starting to think that after game 4 the Rangers hit a wall and won’t be able to solve Washington because of how thay plat their defense- similar to Ny, blocking shots, etc. And, I guess, because of teir potent offense. Thought the boys were a step slow last game after their big OT win on Wednesday. They will have their jump back tonight and should handle this Caps team, and Henrik will bounce back.

  121. Carp I completely agree this is how the Rangers win and I’ve said that Torts has figured out this is how they have to play to win. Not questioning that and trust me I’m behind them 100% to do what it takes and I marvel at their commtiment and courage. That’s why we’re alll so invested with therse guys.

All I’m saying is that as a hockey fan I do tend to think the style is similar to the trap. The league figured out the trap was hurting the product and they came out with new rules. I predict over the next couple of years if we see more of the collapsing shot blocking strategies employed and shots on goal going down to 35 per game combined we will see something to address it.

Or someone will get their face in front of a rocket from the point, end their career or maybe worse, and we’ll talk about it then.

  122. How about the NHL widens the rink by 5 feet and lengthens it by 10 feet? Skill would be back at a premium and scoring will go up

  123. PruBelongs on

It will be nice being able to watch the game tonight without having to see the jumbotron at the Verizon Center constantly panning to the jackwagon holding up the decibel meter.

  124. Matteau! Like Trent McCleary, you mean?

There might be a few reasons for widening rinks, but not sure it automatically means increased scoring, if you go by some of the Europånsy leagues and World Championship play.

  125. I am not sure Torts was trying to be a jackwagon after game 4, he just seems to do silly things after his team has lost and he is frustrated in defeat. He gets away with some things because he is the almighty Tortorella, but the guy is human like everyone else. He wears his heart on his sleeve and sometimes when frustrated tends to tread on peoples toes because he doesn’t carry himself perfectly like he is Mr. Hockey.

Of course the guy will continue to get a pass if he can manage his team to victory here in this series, and continue moving along during the playoffs.

Also, any word on Dubi? We could use some of his effort and grit tonight on the Garden ice. Just depends on if he would come out and play a determined desperate style of hockey.

  126. I actually am shocked that Giroux gets a game, and Ovechkin gets nothing, when Ovi is a repeat offender. Both players and both hits impacted the head of the opposing player. Ovechkin’s hit is just as dirty as Giroux’s head hunt because he irresponsibly leaves his feet there fore exposing Girardi’s head to danger. Both plays are suspend-able in my opinion, and OV’s should be of the three to five game variety due to him being a repeat offender.

  127. Arguably the MVP of the playoffs right now.

    aside from that LA goalie!

  128. e3 (pimp's angel) on

deep down torts is shy and it is uncomfortable for him to take questions….

  129. Thanks Vogs.

Dubinsky must have a broken foot/leg or something if he isn’t skating and is walking around with crutches still.

I’d be curious to see when Zuccarello is healthy enough if Tortorella will put him in for a little more offensive vision and passing ability/vision on the powerplay.

I think Giroux right now is the playoff MVP.. Which eats my KISHKA’S out as he was the pick immediately after the great Booby Sanguinetti…

And by the way, Paulina Gretzky?

  134. It’s too bad the NHL operates in such a pathetic vacuum. Because I’d love to see the press get in Shanahan’s face and ask “So Giroux is suspended but Ovechkin’s hit isn’t even worthy of a review? Please explain to us why that is…and remember we WILL use your previous words and actions against you”

The Flyers are done. Not a whole lot of maturity on that team. From 24/7 I got the impression they are just an immature group with a coach who loses it on a nightly basis.

Add in the mental head case that will be their goaltending for the next several years…

But enough about that. If the Rangers don’t come out and play their best game of the season tonight I think we’ll all be in a VERY sad mood come Wednesday night.

They gotta look in the mirror and ask themselves how they want this season to be remembered. And do they REALLY want to lose the Caps AGAIN????

Pumped for the game tonight…because I honestly feel the winner of this game wins the series. Despite what Carp says.

Because, Carp…you think level-headed. You think without emotion.

    I can’t do that. :-)

Anybody see The Avengers yet? Saw it Friday and will be going again this week. Definitely one of the better films I’ve seen in quite a while. My inner 8 year old had an absolute blast.

  135. I agree that Torts needs to be respectful of the press and the fans. But, let’s be honest, other than filling column space, what do his comments really add? He never says anything revealing or honest. He gets asked a bunch of largely inane questions and he responds with even more meaningless answers.

It’s unfortunate, but coaches aren’t allowed to say what they really think, but they are still expected to fill minutes for fans and the press. It seems a bit silly.

And I’d sure as hell rather have him get the team to win, then explain to me how much jam he thinks players have or who might get an extra minute of ice time. It changes nothing.

    1. 6 of his 17 playoff points in 1 game, another 8 in 4 games against Pittsburgh

  142. Am I the only one who thinks OTT was a tougher opponent? We’ve all but given WSH their 2 wins. I’m nervous about the series, but we’ve dominated the Caps for long stretches of time, I feel like we never really had our way with OTT after game 1 and it was really toe to toe. OTT made it tough for us to play our suffocation game, and WSH is just trying to play our own game against us.

If we eliminate a couple of BAD plays (see: rookie mistakes)… we could have been chanting goodbye tonight.

What really bothers me is that Green got that big goal and put himself back on the map….we’d been doing such a good job of punishing him and making him shy out of plays. I hate his face. He looks like “Pinto” from Animal House.

  164. Wow you guys have been busy on this blog!!!

    1. I agree with those who say that they couldn’t give Ovie a meeting or anything. . . as a repeat it would have to be multiple games and they aren’t going to take out the star player out of the lineup.

    2. I like the boring style. . . I love seeing the blocked shot total go up because to me that shows a team focus and willingness to do anything to win. I find a one goal game more exciting then a high scoring goal because you know that every score/shot could be the game (that being said I would love for the Rangers to be kinder to all our hearts and score!!!!!)

    3. Yeah the press conference behavior was retarded. He has a job to do and the media is just trying to do their job too. I work in retail and if I treated a customer or fellow co-worker/vendor like that I would not get away with it. In fact its very embarrassing . . I had a manager talk down to a vendor and I was stunned by his behavior and manner and when he walked off we looked at each other shocked and I actually apologized because I was soooo embarrassed. Sorry to say but in his job he is a public figure and as one he doesn’t have to behave well but he should at least be decent.

4 (I posted this earlier on missed calls) If the Rangers actually had a powerplay that scored I would be more concerned about missed call . . . as for calls that are made against Rangers if the Rangers committed the penalty then they deserve the call. . . .if you don’t want to kill a penalty then don’t commit one. . . so a slash on Boyle doesn’t get called. .. that doesn’t mean that Hagelin can slash one of the Capitals its not fair but nothing really ever is. . . . . .they got to play smart for a whole 60 minutes of hockey. Not waste the first period and then come on strong in the second and parts of the third.

5 I think the Rangers will come out strong and hopefully feed off a good crowd. . . .Gaborik needs to be the player who scored in the third overtime and make chances for himself. We all know he has the talent and skill. ANd the whole team needs to make the Capitals feel it every time they touch the puck (legally I mean) smart hard hockey!

  165. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Don’t worry, Dan. At least he didn’t say “even with your looks, you still landed a hot wife”.

  166. LW3H – Point is: Player A’s points are clearly inflated because of Player A’s points in one particular game and series. Player A has failed to live up to his end of the bargain for his current series.

  167. *Opinion* time: I have been speaking with another person who frequently posts on this blog and we have come to a conclusion that some sort of Panel should be instituted for Player Safety and discipline. This panel should consist of ex-player/manager, lay-person and possibly a doctor and even possibly an owner. The idea is to get lots of people that have different interests to determine discipline. This would hopefully make for consistency. These people should *not* be paid.

Manny, they need to do something to repair the sham that is “The Department of Justifying (or ignoring) Head-shots”, but I don’t know if your solution would ever fly.

The Devs are beating the Flys by putting a ton of pressure on the Philly defensemen – and that is *exactly* what our Rangers need to do with the Craps – their “D” sucks, but they need to be hit, hit, hit – cleanly, but unceasingly – and they will cough up the puck.

  175. e3- Player A gets too much credit!

LW3H- Replace Emrick with McGuire and you’ve got it!

  196. Lloyd Braun on

again, if not for the fact that under Shanahan’s give the stars infinite rope policy Girardi would absolutely have been suspended for delivering the same hit on Ovechkin, I wouldn’t even view Ovechkin’s hit as suspendable.

Giroux, on the other hand, clearly targeted a player, came at him from behind, and threw an elbow at his head. That chrome dome kept going on about how Giroux didn’t leave his feet is completely immaterial; by extension, hitting a player in the head with an elbow is ok if you don’t go up in the air. McGuire is a moron, so I’m not surprised he’d completely miss the point. That Giroux made it clear that he was trying to injure a player and received one-third of the games Hagelin received, shows that Shanahan’s concern over headshots has everything to do with the name on the back of the jersey and next to nothing to do with severity.

The Empire State Bldg will surely be lit up Orange and Black with a clear “28” to honor the best player in the game, no longer in for the game.

  202. JimboWoodside on

But seriously, folks – Giroux did himself in by yapping demonstratively at the officials when they didn’t make the call on the hit on him just before he went down the ice and nailed Zubrus – he telegraphed his intentions totally, and he showed the officials up – and the league will not stand for that.

  207. I’m with 1940 about the no-meeting, no-suspension reasoning for Ovie- the penalty would have to be too severe. Giroux gets a game- I guess that’s okay. But what I really want to know is what penalty should be levied by the league against a ref who clearly blows a simple call (like Brodeur playing the puck in the trapezoid) in a playoff game. If I was Giroux, I would have flipped out too. Whoever that was who either blew or refused to call a black-and-white infraction won’t be allowed to ref another game in these playoffs, right? I mean we can all agree it was a hard to explain missed call- there should be a hearing and some discipline coming down behind the scenes- one would think. Tired of talking about officiating…two refs made the refereeing TWICE AS BAD and twice as inconsistent. Hopefully, whatever happens the rest of the series we’ll be debating stuff about the play and not the guys watching . Don’t hold your breath…

Yes they *did*, Lloyd – it’s an elimination game for his team, and he was a major force in the defeat of Pittsburgh. His hit wasn’t that terrible, Zubrus played the hit perfectly, and he was not injured. They sent the message they wanted to send to Giroux. His hit wasn’t worthy of more than one game.

Let’s go Rangers!!!! Let’s go Rangers!!!!

  216. JimboWoodside on

What’s annoying about Ovie’s hit on Girardi is the fact that he’s always handing out punishing hits to opposing players, usually late hits when the puck is already long gone, and that he seems to be impossible to hit that same way. The guy is built like a tank, and I don’t know who we’ve got who can lay a check on him in similar fashion to the hit that MDZ finally laid on Chris Neil in the last series.

Ovie really needs a taste of his own medicine, but who administers that taste to him!?

  217. JimboWoodside on

    >>>So then you think Hagelin deserved three games.

Lloyd, by the way the rules are written, Hags “probably” deserved two games. He got his elbow up and hit Alfie in the head, and he *injured* him. Alfie was against the boards, too, and that seems to trigger suspensions when a player gets laid out. Unfortunately, Alfie was injury-prone, having had a concussion earlier in the season. I don’t think Hags meant to injure Alfie, but it happened.

  218. JimboWoodside on

Hits in the middle of the ice almost always get less disciplinary action than hits along the board, whether an injury results or not – I’m not saying that is fair, but it seems to be the case.

  219. Lloyd Braun on

so that Giroux went looking for a guy to hurt was only worth 1 game, Hagelin (who according to you wasn’t try to hurt anyone) deserves more games because Alfredsson was less lucky than Zubrus?

  220. Sounds like he’s too nervous to scribble the basic motivational messages (no strategy) on the whiteboard demanded by Ragearella, wicky.

  221. JimboWoodside on

John Scott can’t catch him, Carp – if we could tie Ovie’s legs together and stand him in a corner, then I’d say we should turn Scott loose! ;-D

  222. Staal got Ovechkin coming through the middle pretty good the game before. And while I don’t buy the “Ovechkin was defending himself” argument, had he not reacted, Girardi could’ve lined him up for a heavy hit on that play.

Hardly easy to ever nail somebody that fast and that strong with a good hit though. I’d be happy enough with limiting his scoring (if Dale Hunter doesn’t do it first).

  223. JimboWoodside on

Yes, Lloyd – in the Alice-in-Wonderland way that the NHL administers “justice”, Hags deserved a suspension – Giroux did also, since he telegraphed his intent to get back at the guy who hit him when the refs didn’t call the initial penalty.

NHL “justice” almost always punishes the retaliation, but not the initial infraction, if the officials say that they didn’t see it.

  224. Lloyd Braun on

if Del Zotto was able to (basically) cheap shot Neil, he should be able to do the same to Ovechkin

  225. JimboWoodside on

Hags caused an injury, though – even though Alfie’s brains were already partially scrambled. Giroux didn’t cause one, but he showed up the officials.

  226. JimboWoodside on

And scrambling Ovie’s brains seems to be a tough task, since his head seems to be made of granite.
