It’s Go Time!

Rangers-Capitals Game 4.

This is the first time in 73 years that the Rangers have played a game after one that lasted as long as 114:41.

Ya boys are expected to dress the same lineup. I saw Stu Bickel getting loose, so I anticipate no changes. Nobody had anything to ask John Tortorella today, so we gave him the morning off.

The Rangers have now won four of their last five playoff games.

Let’s get this one done in the original 60 minutes, OK?

Let’s Go Tony!

(Update: Bickel’s in. Same lineup as Game 3).

See last night’s thread for the announcement of the first-round predictions contest winners (Headzo and tf).

we’ll more than make up for that this morning/afternoon Carp!

  3. Everyone must be tired after triple overtime, Carp. You know, fatigued. The body language is lousy,

  5. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

lol ilbzo, i got 11 hours sleep total since that game, I’m ready!

  6. McShanny (discp Czar) on

Everyone’s trying to get the weekend Carcillo outta the way before NBC decides its Hockey time

  7. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

Congrats on your victory Headzo.. and tf!!! Good going kids!

  8. Rob in Beantown on

Congrats in advance to Washington for winning game 4. Boys will have to regroup and win game 5 at home!

  9. No one had anything to ask Torts. Disagree: “What’s it like having that ridiculous Boston accent and working in NY sports?” “How’s that kid from 24/7?” “How’s Rammer’s jam level?” “Do you agree with Bryz that monkeys are more dangerous than dogs (in space)?” “Can you teach Carp about flash and “Clash of the Titans”? See? Lots of questions for him.

Carp, you should have a contest where the prize is a question to be asked of Torts (by you). With only reasonably sane (if possibly funny) ones being accepted. Maybe not for this playoff run (thought that would be better).

He wouldn’t have to know it came from the peanut gallery.

  10. I think it’s pretty obvious why traffic has been low. We, as opposed to Torts and his team, are exhausted from that last game. And we don’t have Torts telling us that’s unacceptable.

  11. LOL. Good idea.

We’re not tired, ilb. If we’re tired, we have no chance … I’ll just leave it at that. We’re not tired.

  12. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

don’t forget, we’re in Game 4 but have had 5 games worth of commentary lol

  13. Got it, Carp!

Hey, get your *body language* together, ‘heads! WE ARE NOT TIRED!

  14. iDoodie machetto: get well Tony on

Oleo, that’s very generous of you. Not that I need it, but that’s wonderul of you to do that.

Carp, funny traffic has been so low after that near 1500 comment game Wednesday.

  15. Marc Joannette and Brad Watson the men with orange armbands today.

The commish in the house along with the great Mr. Frank Brown, Doc, Edzo (who probably wishes he was at the Kentucky Derby) and Pierre. Dave Maloney with Don LaGreca (Kenny Albert has FOX baseball duty).

  16. iDoodie machetto: get well Tony on

Nothing is a great lead in for playoff hockey like Babar

  17. My son just texted me:”I’m guessing at this very moment you’re not fishing”

  18. who were officials for game 3?

I thought they were spot on the whole game…

  19. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

lmao Doodie i was just thinking that!!

prepare for about 800 kentucky derby drops in this telecast

  20. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

i have movie tickets for 5:30, hope OT ends before that!

  21. E3 pimp's Angel on

After the rangers win game 4, let Hank rest for game 5.

    Recall Avery = fresh legs

  22. lol, i flipped to nbc at 12 as well and saw babar in standard definition and thought the same thing… gets you in the mood for playoff hockey

  23. onecupin72yearsandcounting on

So in the WTF department the overpaid geniuses at NBC televise Babar instead of a pregame show for an early 12:30 game .
I guess they’re trying to attract the diaper set..

If you don’t it for the NFL , MLB and NBA why do you crap on the NHL ,Bettman get some balls..

  24. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

Doc’s voice is already in mid game crackling

  25. Rob in Beantown on

Relax, the game won’t start until 12:45 anyway. Do you really need more than 15 minutes of pregame? Babar was a nice break from the hot air that suffices for hockey analysis on TV

  26. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Always makes me laugh that the players are so ingrained by saying “tonight” they say it during a brunch-time game….

  27. SCREEEEEEEEEECH!!!!!!!!!!!

    *LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!*

  28. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

    We need some solidarity.

And also a win. This game is over before it begins. THE KREIDER with 3 assists, final score is 12-1. Nice easy win, coast back to MSG.

  29. Please explain how Emerick is “best in the business”? Literally hurts my ears.

  30. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

How these guys can even skate after game 3. Wow. Courage. 53 minutes, McD? Really?

  31. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

So, Richards, WTF was that? a pass? a shot? it lead to a scoring chance. Wise up, guy.

  32. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

Salty, according to others, he’s ‘a true professional’

  33. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

I am sure it’s really that easy to knock Chimera off his skates.

  34. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

Has anyone ever seen a hockey player get a penalty called and go up to the ref and tell him it was a good call?

  35. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

Thats right ovenchicken, BOW YOUR HEAD to the KING

  36. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

And of course Pierre wants them to check if it’s a goal.

  37. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Safe to say Hank is the #1 star of the first 5 minutes.

  38. Way too many good chances. Way too many passes across the goal mouth. Yikes. Hank.

  39. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

These fans seem to realize that if the Rangers win today, they may not see their beloved team again this year. Oh well…..

  40. The number one star is whomever has NBC on mute so they don’t have to hear these clowns.

  41. How’s Stralman’s body language on the bench after Torts chewed his MZA off, Carp?

  42. Rangers need to weather the storm here. Caps coming out flying.. Rangers need to weather it and settle into THEIR game.. WE SHALL PREVAIL!

  43. carp what’s the mood in the press box? everyone eating bananas to keep energy up?

  44. we look okay
of course caps are going to be pushing the play
    so we’re waiting ’em out

hoping for a little more in offensive zone

  45. Matty'WinGame4'Boy on

Chris F, it’s been happening all year. When Hank has been needed he get’s it done. That was an amazing kill by him. Great PP by Washington, too.

The best goalies in the west, you know, are on their way to the conference finals. Let’s hope the same can happen to the best in the east.

  46. doc couldn’t wait to tell us that hendricks and fedetenko made the teams out of camp last year

  47. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

lmao @ these asshats talking mute button… something we use on them

  48. yes Yev
    “weather the storm”
that’s the term i wanted to use.

    (not completely awake!)

  49. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

    here’s another 20 seconds of Stu’s 3 minutes TOI

  50. iDoodie Machetto, get well tony on

I love the work that our fourth line does, but it’s getting clear that they won’t ever score.

  51. Carp
based on all the off the board/using the angles passes
do you think the Rangers are incredible billiards players?

(btw, a bit more open so far. more passes happening today)

  52. iDoodie Machetto, get well tony on

Sinkerbomb, eh? I can’t imagine why Montreal passed on Pierre!

  53. Blogmama Go Tony!!! on

Hartnell. Wanted the first one bad. Hate the hartnelling ambulance noise…..

  54. iDoodie Machetto, get well tony on

And now my dog is barking. Not the Kreider’s best moment.

  55. LaTONYa from Miami on

Not Hank’s fault. Terrible giveaway to a wide open Ovechkin in the slot. Looked like Cally was being held in the corner before that though.

  56. btw Carp
this is example of us not getting out of zone
by just “banging it around the board” (Maloney’s words)

  57. i need to get off the blog, i never comment during games… i’m leaving so we can win today

  58. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Hank had to stop that because the score was 0-0 before that goal and stuff.

This is the first time this series they have been significantly outplayed. But, if they can keep it 1-0, I suspect they’ll get their legs under them in the 2nd.

  59. Need to step it up or this one is over early! But this color-comentator is awfully biased against the Rangers.

  60. absolutely crap play. no ofensive pressure at all. no threat to score. caps win this easy

  61. iDoodie Machetto, get well tony on

Carp, that should be your first question to Torts after the game:

“what happened to all the momentum from game 3?”

  62. Rob in Beantown on

Rangers are lucky this one is 1-0. Hopefully we don’t stink next period!!

  63. Yev Kassem on

totally outplayed this period. This reminds me of game 4 against the Devils in 94. Crushing double OT loss in game 3 (first of the matteau double OT goals) and then they came out and smoked us in game 4 (and game 5!)

  64. If Game 2 was on Richards, as some said here, because of that questionable late penalty, is period 1 on Kreider for that Caps goal?

  65. Lucky to only be down one. Hank should have stopped the glove side 35 footer. But he’s been sick on other stuff, so, there ya go. Rangers must generate O and must clear the puck more effectively. Also, time for Fedetenko to score.

  66. LaTONYa from Miami on

I agree, Graves. Looked like Hamrlik was doing it in the corner there, and I thought Cally was being held before the Kreider fail.

  67. ThisYearsModel on

Terrible effort after the penalty call. Soft goal allowed by Henrik, but he was great otherwise. Should be 0-0.

  68. E3 pimp's Angel on

Not worried. There was sustained pressure late that period.

The difference maker will be Stu Bickel with a pair of goals.

  69. It’s not the first time Ovechkin has scored that kind of goal against Hank. I dont agree that it’s a soft goal…. A one-timer gong 100mph from a guy like Ovechkin…tough to stop.

  70. Rob in Beantown on

I don’t know what that was by Kreider, it looked like a no-look pass to…. somebody? Carp do you think it was tipped?

  71. the Caps look like the hungrier team. the Rangers need to step up their compete level. they are sluggish in all ways.

  72. Czechthemout!!! on

Bad play by Kreider but an even worse goal allowed by LQ.

Playing like dog crap so far. Still plenty of time to come back and win this thing.

And what’s with all the line changes? I don’t get it. They need to step it up! 14-3 in shots on goal.

  73. onecupin72yearsandcounting on

NBC audio is awful.. I hear more background noise than the announcers.. but maybe that’s a good thing ?

  74. Yev Kassem on

Caps flying. Rangers look like they played six periods of Hockey on Wednesday….

  75. Carp

I think his stick was checked so it forced the puck the point. Unfortunately, out of all the players the puck could fall to, it went to number 8 as he is the only player in the building capable of scoring that goal consistently.

I don’t care what they say about his defense and his drop in production, Ovechkin is still one of the top 5 offensive players in the league…

  76. No, Kreider just spaced a pass to Boyle, overextended his angle and it went up to Ovie. Straight pass.

Rangers play out of the D zone has been bad. But they just need to own this period and it won’t matter. Hopefully they’re not actually whipped from Wednesday, no matter what they said (though it looks like it). Our top guys got 10 more minutes of ice time than their top guys.

Hey, at least Bickel got some minutes.

  77. Tom Foolery on

Agree about the audio. That stupid goal siren came blasting out of the television. I almost jumped off the couch

  78. ThisYearsModel on

Carp–Kreider’s pass was direct to OV. No deflection. It did deflect off Henrik’s glove on its way in.

  79. Czechthemout!!! on

That goal was 70% on LQ. 45-50 foot shot with 100% visibility and letting the puck pop out of your glove. Mostly LQ’s fault sorry. That said, if not for him it would be 3 or 4-0.

  80. Also can the 4th line Mitchell ever one time score a freaking goal. On the doorstep and they don’t score ever

  81. I am not worried unless we play like that again in the second. Why do I get the feeling that the Rangers just are going through the motions and not worrying about this game thus far?

  82. The Caps need this game, why are people surprised they’re playing like this? You all heard Hunter say, if they lose this game they know it’s pretty much over.

  83. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

Well, that was a *painful* period to watch – sheesh! Only 3 SOG – bah!

  84. It was a dumb blind pass by Kreider. Typical rookie mistake. But, I agree, it was a soft goal on Hank. Can’t let that it.

Lev, it would be on the whole team. Over 40 minutes to score one goal, unlike the other night.

  85. Yes it was a bad play by Kreider and yes Hank should have stopped that, but Alex Ovechkin is one of the top 20 most talented players to ever play the game of hockey.

He can beat you by himself regardless of how well you play…

  86. Barry Beck on

Staal and Del Zotto start the 2nd period together. I guess that means we dont see Bickel and possibly Stralman for the rest of the game?

  87. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

  88. Carp, lol..You’re still not used to it? I was surprised you didn’t mention during the first that with all their pressure, Washington defense didn’t look like thay wanted to compete physically.

  89. ORR!!
caps are at home and need to get the equalizer in the series
they have more skill than we do (ugh!)

i’m not surprised that they played with more pressure on us
wish that we would have switched it on ’em
and kinda did in the last few minutes
we have “momentum” going into second period……….so far

  90. i’d like to see that replay.
    don’t see how that’s a handpass
more like a save my face, knock puck down

  91. E3 pimp's Angel on

    Rangers have stolen the momentum.

Everyone want to see the game on Saturday.

  92. ThisYearsModel on

Anyone want to wager that if a Cap gets pulled down in the slot like Hamrlik did to Stepan, that we are in the box?

  93. Nah Carp . . .they know that calling a powerplay for us doesn’t help . . . in fact it almost guarantees Rangers won’t score for two minutes

  94. Barry Beck on

can someone tell me what Del Zotto has done on the PP in the last….40 games or so?

  95. Barry Beck on

Great, another PP. So Del Zotto can skate up the ice like he has bricks in his pants and drop the puck back instead of going forward with it.

Hey, maybe he’ll shoot the puck wide too!

  96. Too bad the NHL has legalized charging, leaping shots to the head … or Ovechkin could face discipline.

  97. Ignores the puck, leaves his feet … but he’s a star. $2,500 fine for the ref for calling it a penalty.

  98. Yeah, Del Zotto’s been awful in these playoffs, Barry. What, can’t complain about Dubinsky?

  99. boxcareddiehospodar on

This power play is an embarassment.

How in the world is our power play so inept.

We should watch the caps power play.

  100. I am starting to wonder how our offense would have been with the addition of Nash and how our PP would be without DZ!

  101. Yev Kassem on

I don’t care that there was no injury. He left his feet and was head hunting. That was a suspendable hit. But, it will never happen.

  102. boxcareddiehospodar on

every team plops a player in front of the net during the PP except for us.

we should decline the penalty the next time.

  103. The addition of Nash, minus Del Zotto/McDonagh, Stepan, Kreider, first-round pick, plus? That addition of Nash?

  104. 4generations 4 cups on

Yev thats exactly what i thought. The same exact play as Raffi Torres. No way in the world the they would have the grapes to put Ovechkin in time out for a critical game 5,6,7…

  105. Yev Kassem on

Could we please stop with the Nash NONSENSE! They wanted Kreider. I wouldn’t trade that kid in a million years

  106. There is def momentum in games and our lack of a pp has led to the caps surge so don’t tell me momentum means squat maybe not from one game to another but in this period a good ok or horrific pp has turned this period around

  107. Czechthemout!!! on

I am Zooey. Torts is a great coach but sometimes he does things that are just stupid. Changing the lines for no reason and once again putting Stepan on the point is just stupid. It has not worked all year.

  108. If Ovie got three games earlier this year for that horse-Carcillo, he should sit for at least 2 games in the Playoffs. That was another ridiculous head-hunting hit by Peggy.

  109. Yev Kassem on

Good call 4 generations. The Ovie hit looked like the Torres hit. There but for the grace of god, G was not injured. It deserves at least a 1 game suspension!

  110. The Caps Pk is very aggressive forcing the rangers to pass rather than shoot.

  111. No, no… I mean if Howson was not totally inept at his job and actually accepted something reasonable. But we all know that won’t happen until that team is ready to declare bankruptcy.

  112. boxcareddiehospodar on

    wait until the 3rd period.

bickel and strahlmann will ride the bench the entire 3rd.

keep killing the 4 best defenders!!

  113. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

  114. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

  115. That was hilarious. Holtby with the arm up….not paying attention. So Stupid.

  116. Blogmama Go Tony!!! on

LaTONYa….um, that was me, not eric…… and I was talking about here, not the game :)

  117. Barry Beck on

Carp, how well has he been on the PP this season? And he’s the #1 point man every time the PP starts.

  118. boxcar, would you really prefer Bickel and Stralman on the ice in the third?

Why is this such a popular theory?

  119. Hags has got to go to the net and try to score. He twirls away every time. Off-season he needs to work on his shot so he has some confidence.

  120. Blogmama Go Tony!!! on

Can’t call this game boring. Well, you technically could, but you’d be wrong.

  121. Rob in Beantown on

Jorek, the NHL has its head in the sand if seeming injured is the criteria by which this stuff gets reviewed. Junior Seau was never on a concussion list…

  122. listening to radio (7 second delay)
    saw replay with Hank

weere they wondering if i felt a little funny after the save?

  123. so are we doing another contest as far as
whether the ovi hit will be looked at by nhl?

  124. Yea – what Carp said. Who cares if Bickel’s Bickels and Strahlman are on the ice. Do the thing that wins the game. You have to do what you have to do. Just like moving Artie up on the lines today because he’ dominating. Even though he got beat up earlier.

  125. Yev Kassem on

I don’t agree about MDZ being the reason for the PP woes. The PP needs to throw more shots on net. The passing has gotten better.. The movement is better.. BUT NOT ENOUGH SHOTS!

  126. Orr, it’s not everybody complaining about’s just Barry….what else can he talk about since Dubinsky isn’t playing?

  127. I think they should leave AA where he was. Part of the reason he succeeds is because he has more skill than the guys the 4th line plays against. He pops. On the top line he gets buried.

  128. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

ha, no prob……long day? when did you start???? I’m going to accomplish nothing today…

  129. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Manny, he was wrongly convicting eric…:) and you stay out of it!!!

  130. one of the fundamental problems with our PP is there is not a single guy on our team with an above average shot from the point.

Our d-men can only pass the puck into the corners whereas Ottawa and Washington both have guys that can blast it from the point.

I’ve never seen Justin Schultz play but given his numbers in the NCAA, i would guess that he can fill that void next season…

  131. Czechthemout!!! on

AA with big game so far. Nice. Gabby comes up big too. They need to go to the net with the puck. Still too much board work. Te Caps are expecting them to always go to the boards first. The second goal was the perfect play. Put it in front.

  132. LaTONYa from Miami on

Six, Mama! And don’t tell Manny not to stand up for me. We’re linemates!

  133. JBytes [on iPad] on

A goal and assist from Anisimov thus far. What are the chances he’ll have a fight?

I refrain from calling people idiot, but these NBC analysts are making it difficult for me to stay the course.

  134. E3 pimp's Angel on

I don’t know what game some if you ate watching, but Bickel is playing a great game.

  135. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

I just finished my morning coffee by game time….and your lines need juggling :)

  136. Carp, ready for another multiple overtime thingy? Get a 2L empty bottle ready this time :-)

  137. McShanny (discp Czar) on

Finally those clowns make sense! Milbury says 8’s hit should be fined – agreed then they realize repeat offender must be suspended. Then Milbury says we’ll just wait for Shanny to make the call then scure him later – funny.

  138. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

I will really eat my souvenir puck if the NHL suspends chicken with only one game :) left in this series.

  139. E3 pimp's Angel on

Ovie should sit minimum 1 game. Doubt Shanny does anything.

Shanny: ” his feet didnt elevate off the ice, the ice actually sank beneath ovie’s skates – no fine”

  140. McShanny (discp Czar) on

Blogmama I agree so then we can all get our fix of jabbing Shanny and NHL in the eye for a couple of days! Yea!

  141. Czechthemout!!! on

Go on YouTube. There is some good video of him. Pay close attention to a couple of plays where he shoots a couple of bombs of the pass. Shultz looks like the real deal and is considered the best prospect in the Ducks organization. Too bad for them because I think he will be a Ranger next season and be the power play QB we’ve lacked for a while.

  142. This Hatfield and McCoy thing has my attention . . .the commercial does a good job

  143. Ugh. Mike Emericks voice is like a teen going through puberty. Guess ill have to deal with it since NBC owns the playoffs this year.

  144. accdg to Jones, “he was just protecting himself”

so, I guess that is what Cooke and Torres can claim every time they cheapshot someone

  145. caps look they don’t wanna go down 3-1
hope Rangers show that they wanna get STIFF
    and get up 3-1

  146. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

oh dear…Maloney: “Those magic hands of Semin….” blech.

  147. Richards got away with that. I’d prefer he take his 3rd period penalty sooner rather than later.

  148. Hosea Cheung ? @hosea24hours
Jack Johnson scores in OT to give USA a 5-4 win over Canada. #2012whc

  149. to be fair MSG has made us think MDZ is the second coming of Leetch. he’s not. nowhere close. but he’s not bad. Would I include him in a trade for Nash? In a heartbeat.

  150. yeah, i was surprised Richards didn’t get a penalty
may give some indication of what will be allowed in this period

  151. Yev Kassem on

should have been a penalty on BRich… He is lucky.

    Boyle playing with “JAM” today!

  152. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Hartnellers….goalie interference and they blow it again!!!!!

  153. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Let’s see if they find a way to justify that being a goal.

  154. McShanny (discp Czar) on

Don’t worry about protecting the Vezina finalist just let em hack and wack him

  155. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Hank shouldn’t have gotten in the way of the Caps players I guess. Should be suspended.

  156. Rob in Beantown on

Ridiculous they even had to review whether that was a goal or not

  157. LaTONYa from Miami on

Great plays by McD there too. Kept the puck alive along the boards and then got off a nice backhand on what could have been a Caps odd man rush the other way.

  158. It’s not goalie interference because Bickel could have been called for about 3 different penalties on that play.

  159. I love captainhan but he risks too much when he blocks shots-he can’t be replaced-

  160. LaTONYa from Miami on

Yeah, educator, he risks losing the identity of this team if he doesn’t go down all the way.

  161. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Oh, Girardi should be out through start of next season….he clearly interfered with chicken’s attempt to kill him.

  162. Gaborik is really starting to look like the player he was at the end of the season

  163. Come on, Feds!

    D goal time.

Emrick’s good. Referencing the Nixon tapes on that goal review. Come on. That’s sweet.

  164. Blogmama Go Tony!!!! on

Jo, usually around 6:30 I think???? But 4 hours of pre-race for the 2 minute race

  165. HageLinDerMcCalPruBoylahan...GET WELL SOON TONY! on

boyle will score in the foxwoods final five and they’ll get to their racing coverage on time

  166. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

How can you call that when you didn’t call Boyle’s stick getting broken?

  196. Yev Kassem on

That sucked. MDZ towards the end of the game MUST not shoot directly into a cap player. Move, deke, do something!!!

We had a chance to take control of this series. I fear now we are looking at 7 games again..

  197. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

Torts better not even show up for the postgame interview – Buttman is rubbing his hands, just waiting to take more money out of Tort’s pockets.

  198. I just want to vent in a nice manner.

The referees screwed us as usual. They missed a too many men on the ice, a tripping on Callahan leading to the GW goal, and a delay of game by Knuble, and a 5 minute major for charging and a head shot by Ovechkin. Ovechkin will not be suspended, that’s a guarantee, even though it was the same hit as Raffi Torres on Marian Hossa without the injury.

Henrik allowed 2 goals today that he had sight of the entire way, goals that have no business going in on the best goalie in the league in a playoff game.

    Very saddened.

  199. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Refs didn’t rob the game, and the Rangers were definitely not ready in the first. But, you can’t argue that they missed the call when Boyle’s stick was broken. You either call it in both spots, or neither.

  200. McShanny (discp Czar) on

I don’t mind the calls if they are even…Hags get suspended Neil too…slash and break a stick on boyle penalty, then Hags gets same call

Yeah Carp, 1st period was tough, but Torts got them back in. Torts is the only reason this team is as good as it is. Bickel looked good when he got his time.

  201. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Not to mention the other missed call when Knuble knocked the puck out with his hand.

  202. Yev Kassem on

Tiki, I agree about the Ovie hit! It was VERY similar to the Torres hit. And we all know that Shanny will do NOTHING!!!

  203. Barry Beck on

Thats right, Del Zotto is out there.

Because he’s going to be Bobby Sanguinetti one day who’s supposed to be Brian Leetch one day.

  204. Again as good our D is, McDonagh, Girardi, MDZ and Staal can’t shoot the puck.

It’s the primary reason the PP stinks and the primary reason why we have difficulty scoring in these type of situations.

Like the series before, our point men are much weaker offensively than the opposition…

  205. onecupin72yearsandcounting on

  207. I will say this though: for all the crap everyone’s giving to Green, he scored the winner tonight. When’s the last time MDZ, our supposed best offensive D-man, scored, hell took a shot like that, from the point?

  208. What else is new? We haven’t goptten one bounce or call the entire season. I am sick of every little F’in mistake we make ending up in the back of our net. We haven’t made one screen work, but every time they shoot it, our block attempt works against us. Who do the Caps think they are? That’s OUR schtick.

gaddameffinmthuaflickansunuvabeach F EVERYBODY NOT ON THIS BLOG RIGHT NOW!!!!!

  209. Yev Kassem on

McDonagh should be on the point on the first PP unit. He has a tremendous upside to his offensive game and it should be exploited.

Also, I understand that the kid made a bad mistake… But jeez, we need offense and speed and Kreider can provide that. Not happy that Torts had him ride the bench…

  210. 4generations 4 cups on

  211. “Refs didn’t rob the game, and the Rangers were definitely not ready in the first. But, you can’t argue that they missed the call when Boyle’s stick was broken. You either call it in both spots, or neither.”

They didn’t rob the Rangers, they just dicked it up. Miss the Cap slash, call the Ranger slash, miss the Cap delay of game. All in, what, a two minute window? Brutal.

  212. Tough loss, oh well now its best 2 of 3 with home advantage. For all the good play Lundqvist gives this team it’s games like this that are frustrating.

He has to stop the two goals above the circles that he can see. No excuses for those, no matter how good the shots were…..

  213. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

Shanahan’s excuse, the puck was there, even though he skated right by it to leap up and hit Girardi in the head.

  214. The referees didnt rob the game. They did, however, screw us repeatedly in this game.

This game falls on Lundqvist, the best goalie in the league. He allowed 2 goals that have no business going in.

Hank shouldn’t allow those goals because he is a Veizna finalist and the game was tied. So he needs to stop those.

How game like that could be desided by unspeakable byfuglien cooke carsillo!????

  225. Czechthemout!!! on

Anyone defending MdZ and his ability to is nuts! The guy has no shot. None. It is astounding that McD stays glued to the bench all year long on the pp and in these types of situations while MdZ is allowed to fail over and over again. Three god damn blocked shots in one Fugging sequence. Girardi is no better.

Kreider is glued to the bench while Feds and Prust play with Stepan.? Really? And in the last two minutes? Kreider on two broken legs is more of threat to score than these two offensively challenged dudes.

Why was AA glued to the bench at the end? Because he created both of the goals?

LQ was at fault for two goals. The first and third goals you have to stop in the playoffs. He wasn’t even screened.

Poor job baby Torts today too. Dumb line combos made establishing any kind of offensive flow difficult.

  226. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

Not an outstanding display of goaltending on those 2 in-the-clear goals, either.

  227. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

  228. hags was clearly a penalty what bothers me is the boyle non call. u call hags u need to call boyle play that simple. there pp is potent ours is a disgrace

  229. Really dude, two goals above the circle no screens….enough said. If you’re going to the highest paid goalie in the league, a Vezina finalist etc – you have to stop all the shots you can see in the playoffs. I bet Lundqvist even owns up to it…

You know, being beaten fair and square doesn’t feel this bad. A game like this does, especially with the absurd inconsistency from the refs. They ruined a good game again.

  232. agree mdz playing late mins has zero shot of getting his shot through why because he has none. he cant get shot blocked all the time.

  233. Yes they were robbed lol. Not only because they broke boyle’s stick seconds earlier, but also the trip on cally, slash on hagelin not called, and the call itself was marginal at best. They only called it compulsively because the crowd reacted and Thoghr it was going to be a scoring chance against.

  234. I Rarely Speak on

so he gives up two goals.. makes about 5 stops that not many goalies can make in the league and yet blame the goalie.. lets of intelliegnce

  235. that was a phenomenal stick check on callahan and not a penalty. The boyle one certainly was though and they got unlucky on the non call of the delay of game.

The game came down to the Caps being the better offensive team. The Rangers don’t have an Ovechkin nor do they have a Mike Green and that was the difference tonight. Sometimes its a non factor, but tonight the skill players prevailed…

  236. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

You guys realize if we had Holtby in net, that this game would have been about 3-0 after 1 and a 5-2 final.

  237. Torterella’s ill-advised punishment of players to the detriment of the team.

  238. Too many men on the ice
    Delay of game by Knuble
    5 minute major by Ovechkin.

That’s 9 minutes of PP time, of which we only received 2 minutes.

7 minutes of PP time could make all the difference.

No 2 ways about it. Cant spin it any other way.

7 entire minutes of PP time that we did not see that we deserved.

  239. I Rarely Speak on

now blame the coach!!!! let the ball continue to roll down the hill of stupidity…

  240. Dolan is rubbing his hands together, counting all the money that these long series and home games are providing him

  241. Sry Orr. That wasn’t a crush on krieder. It was a small fling at best, but if you don’t mind the infacuation with him then jump aboard the NBC train. Defending NBC lol

  242. those people saying Kreider should not have been benched after his pathetic giveaway that led to the first goal because we need offense are the same people that think Radulov and Kostitsyn should have played because Nashville needs offense. as far as blaming Hank for this game…that’s just ludicrous. but everyone needs a scapegoat.

  243. The more PP time you have, the less time they have to score, the more time you have to score.

And that’s forgetting the slash on Boyle’s stick that went uncalled and then the immediate slash that was called on us.

Hey, its always gonna be this way.

Wish Shenrik wouldve stopped those 2 shots that had no business going in.

  244. I wont blame Hank, cause he sure as hell kept this team in the game, making some great saves. His teammates didn’t help him out in the end. For the second time in three games, a dumb late penalty kills them.

  245. Yev Kassem on

I agree Gravy. But for Henrik, the score in the first period could have been 4 or 5 to ZERO! And yes, Mac Truck needs to be the point on the PP. He is such a skilled player and has offensive talent that has yet to be exploited.

Look the last penalty on us was a penalty, but if you call it there, you HAVE TO call it when the stick is slashed out of Boyles hands

  246. Tiki

what about the missed icing with 3 minutes left in the game or the missed high stick with 7 minutes to play that Washington didn’t get.

Or when the ref blew the play dead when he could have let it go after Bickel knocked the Washington player into Lundqvist.

    Referring goes both ways…

  247. Yev Kassem on

Lev, HUGE difference between one mistake by Kreider in the game and Radulov and Kostitsyn out partying and breaking curfew!

OK, bench him or move him to the 4th line for awhile, but the kid has offensive talent and the speed speaks for itself. We needed offense and Kreider rode the pine. Bad move IMHO

  248. and you can’t blame Hank for goal #3.

PERFECT shot and he was screened to boot…

  249. Yev Kassem on

Orr, every game in the Playoffs seems like life and death. Give people a break who are upset and venting. I totally expect them to come out on Monday with a better effort and WIN THE GAME. But, that doesn’t mean I am not really upset about today…

  250. Again, oleo, I agree to disagree. No screen at all on the 3rd goal. Clear view, a shot that has to be stopped.

  251. score goes to 1-0. game over, season over. who says that? oh, mr embarrassment, ORR, that’s who

  252. McShanny (discp Czar) on

The more I think about it, if I was the ref and saw the 3OT the other night, I’d make sure something created an opportunity to end the thing in regulation.

And we all know that giving NYRangers a PP doesn’t create much opportunity for ending a tie before OT.

  253. Czechthemout!!! on

Kreider did not deserve to be benched because he has the ability to redeem himself. And he is young and things like this will happen. And yet that need not have been a goal because Hank should have stopped it. The notion that Prust and Feds are a better option than him is nuts.

90% of this blog gets on Gabby including me for not scoring goals in big situations. We all s ream that “he gets paid to score big goals”. Well, you know what? Hank gets paid big bucks to make big saves in big situations and for the most part he does. Today he allowed two crappy goals. That’s just a fact.

  254. for someone who rarely speaks, you sure are mouthy this afternoon.

Lundqvist made some insane saves, sure. That does’t absolve him in any way, shape, or form of giving up 2 very soft goals.

  255. Gravy, Swedish Meatballs with Noodles and on

    PP’s this series:

    NYR 2 for 13
    WAS 2 for 12

    Yes, much better PP.

  256. Joekuh - 10 more.....GBTaMP! on

all i have to say is this: if you’re not going to call boyle’s stick getting broken, dont call it when a craps’ player stick gets two pieced. other than that, thought it was a well played game by both teams. bickel did good in his doubling of ice time. i called this series to go 7 , so im not about to back off that pick now.

  257. Orr. These are not crushes. were talking about Edzo who’s a sellout. Doc who’s doc that all i have to say, and pierre mguire. Pm himself wets himself at the thought of a good canadian hockey player.

  258. Torts was awful. he started it with the nonsense that last game meant momentum. then he mixed up the lines to start the game, and they had a sluggish 1st period. then he had the wrong guys, no AA, no McD on the ice in crunch time. Torts needs to step up next game and do a better job.

  259. Tiki:

“Again, oleo, I agree to disagree. No screen at all on the 3rd goal. Clear view, a shot that has to be stopped.”

Lundqvist said that he did not see the 2nd and 3rd goals.

MdZ did not score in game two. He did hit two posts. Game two scores were Cally and Richards.

  261. I Rarely Speak on

hey trella you think coaching had anything to do with what happened between the 1st and 2nd periods??? how bout anisimov after torts got into him?? oh yeah.. we are still rolling down the hill of stupidity

  262. Klesla will face disciplinary hearing on his hit last night.

I bet you that Obumpkin gets no such hearing because the league favors the big name players, just ask Weber.

  263. I didn’t say anything about a conspiracy. I just have two eyes that work, and ovechkin needs to be suspended. His hit was maybe even worse than Torres’s, and you can tell Girardi was groggy he kept on sayin idk idk idk. You can tell there’s damage already.

  264. What is the deal with Eddie O? Is he upset that he couldn’t crack the 94 stanley cup line up on a regular basis?

I thought the trip on Cally right before Green scored was bad. Cally has the puck and instead of it getting out of the zone, its a turnover at the blue line. Refs probably thought Cally blew a tire instead of the stick that got his skates.

I can’t stand Doc/Eddie/Pierre. Might have to turn the TV volume own and hookup the radio.

  265. High Desert Roberto on

rough game, tough to watch..sloppy, hank was off. maybe it was the early start? what are you gonna do. henry wrinkler will have them ready to play come monday night. best of 3, here we go.

  266. Totally agree Matt. Also anoying when ppl thing they own a public message board and get to hand pick ppl who come here. If the Ranger fans feel robbed. then they have a right to express it.

  267. I love how players can have a bad game, but the coach is sacrosanct. bs pal, he had a bad game and your nonsense won’t cover that up.

  268. Gosh, I’m going to miss Totorella’s post-match conferences when he’s no longer coaching.

  269. How anyone can say Ovechkin’s hit was worse than Torres needs to take their Rangers glasses off. I thought Neil’s was much worse…

It was high and it was a tad late, but it was not charging. NBC gave indisputable evidence of that.

  270. I guess I should be used to it by now, but it’s still mind boggling that after each loss we have to blame someone. Hank? Really? Refs, MDZ, NBC too? It’s hockey, one play could’ve changed it either way. And now it’s Torts’ fault too. Just curious, all of you specialists who question his choices of players, what makes you think that you know better than professional NHL coach with his resume? Don’t tell me because you played or watched hockey all your lives, please.

  271. Czechthemout!!! on

Ok enough of this. They blew this game. It’s now over. Their number one objective heading to Washinton was to at least win one game and they did that. Now they must hold serve and win game five at home. The scoters have to score. The coaches have to not make stupid decisions and the goalie needs to play like the MVP candidate that he is.

    Have a good weekend all!

  272. 2 PPs for Capitals when the Rangers committed 2 penalties.

2 PPs for the Rangers when the Capitals committed 8 penalties, including a 5 minute major.

    So fair…

  273. maybe your trying to say the hit didn’t have a worse outcome, because girardi saw ovi coming. Hossa’s head wasn’t up when torres hit him. thats why it was brutal. If you put ovechkins hit in the same situation as torres. Its just as brutal. In fact ovi jump way earlier imo than torres did.

  274. Absolving Lundqvist for two weak goals is like giving credit to Gaborik for the goals he didn’t score……

  275. Adam, I agree to disagree. Just because Henrik says something doesnt make it gospel.

  276. Hank needs to shut the door on Green at the *very least*. That’s all I can really say.

Rangers were probably outplayed for the most part…but making some big time saves does not mean it’s excusable to let soft ones go in a game like this. These games are too close for comfort.

  277. McShanny (discp Czar) on

    Two points only:

    1) Carp can you hurry up with the review post so we can end this one…getting a bit silly in here

    2) Just watched Ovies hit on Girardi – at the very end of the hit (direct to head…with Ovie looking at Dan’s head the whole way…) Girardi’s skate catches Ovie in the back of his thigh! Girardi will get 10 games on review. Sorry but its true, you just can’t do that in the NHL these days, you must be responsible for where your skate lands at all times.

  278. Well, Im gonna try for once in my life to not let this result today affect my mood or my day. Just one game. We played like champions all year, I expect no different in Game 5.

  279. McShanny (discp Czar) on

If hanks as pissed as some of the posters here with his play, the Caps will be shutout Monday night by him.

  280. you don’t know hockey, cuz if you did you would know that leaving your feet to deliver a check is CHARGING. learn the game. and the replay clearly showed Ov doing exactly that. and the refs made the call on the ice, and they called CHARGING. so get a clue

  281. It bothers me so much that WSH is:

    1) beating us at our own game
    2) beating us with yet another nobody goaltender

These games are really just way too close. LQ needed to be twice as big tonight as he was if he wants to sip from the silver. This may very well be the best chance he’ll ever get, and the reality is that it’s 90% on his shoulders to be the superhero and carry this team.

Looking forward to at least one more game that we don’t have to hear that obnoxious siren.

  282. Jimbo (Win It For TONY!) on

Done with this for now – when fans can’t bitch about plays they think were questionable, including goals allowed or penalties called or not called, what’s the point of being here?

  283. yea! thats the spirit. we should just take it in the face and be ok with it. Or, get fined for opposing the perfect specimins that are refs.

  284. blaming Hank for this game is totally unfair… if wasn’t for Hank this game would’ve been over way early.

i blame the forwards for giving Holtby yet another day off.

  285. let me say this the rangers better not put themselves in a position where they trail 3-2 heading to wash. they dug themselves out in round 1 its asking a lot to do it twice.

  286. I do not like the vibe this series has suddenly taken…it feels to me like the Caps have figured somethign out that works, and the Rangers have only a three game series to figure out how to flip the switch again. It really is hard to believe how EVERY mistake we make ends up in the back of our net within 45 seconds. No lucky bounces – I’m STILL waiting for Hockets gods to reimburse us for the Devils bounce-off-of-the-end-board goal

  287. cccp

agree can holtby be tested maybe he can make some of the insane saves hank has to make game in and game out

  288. Salty

    Disagree 100%

The only reason the Rangers are not leading this series is because of Ovechkin. He has scored 2 goals that no-one else in this series is capable of doing…

  289. Ovechkin goal today should have been stopped, but it’s him, you move on from that. Green’s goal, unacceptable, even on the PP.

  290. Oleo – That was a hockey play…I’m talking about a REAL lucky bounce

  291. Salty, if MDZ shot that puck instead of Green and wouldn’t score, I bet you everyone would say:”You have to score from that position”

  292. 1:54PM: Spector tweets: “Gotta think the #NYRangers seek supplemental discipline on that hit by Ovechkin. Replay definitely shows he left his feet for a high hit”

Chris Botta tweets, “Dave Maloney: Ovechkin hit “twice the severity” of hit by Klesla, who has a hearing.”

Larry Brooks tweets, “Ovechkin: a) leaves feet to deliver blow; b) hits Girardi in head; c) is repeat offender. Your move, Dep’t of Player Safety.”

Elliotte Freidman tweets, “Looked at Ovechkin hit a few times. Principal point of contact is not head, but he does leave his feet.”

3:25PM: On MSG, Marc Staal said “It looked to me like he left his feet and tried to target his head.”

3:32PM: Dale Hunter, via Wyshynski, said “Hunter calls Ovi hit on Girardi ‘incidental contact’ and both players didnt expect collision.”

  293. Guys – The league will never suspend Ovie in the playoffs, otherwise the networks and white boys in DC will burn down Georgetown

  294. LaTONYa from Miami on

    Here’s how it works.

NHL officials are pathetic both ways. They’ve capitalized on their PPs so far and we didn’t. We had two PPs in overtime, and didn’t score.

Dangerous hit by Ovechkin but it’s ludicrous to suggest it was the Torres hit. OV should have a hearing, but the NHL is wildly inconsistent so who knows what will happen.

All of you saying Henrik needs to make big-time saves and also claiming that those goals were soft, which one is it? Big-time saves usually come from big-time scoring opportunities.

  295. we already know that they won’t do anything to toothless. all you have to do is look at Weber to see that.

  296. McShanny (discp Czar) on

Dale Hunter, now there’s a player(ex) to really comment on a dirty hit!

Ovi looks at Girardi’s head the whole time…the incidental contact is with the puck

  297. Ovi gets away with murder and always has. Its almost as bad as sindey in a different way. The problem is ppl are just scared to suspend him for whatever reason. Even the almighty tough mike milbury said fine him. then he realized he would be a repeat offender and suspended so he said no nvm don’t lol.

Like I said a few days ago the reason we will lose this series is because our PP is terrible and there PP is awesome. There PP won them 2 games already. Welcome to the ledge.

You were SO correct about everything you said a few days ago. That 3-1 series lead for the Caps is scary!
