HOME ICE ADVANTAGE
The Rangers have won their last six playoff series in which they held home-ice advantage, including a 4-1 series win against Washington in the 1994 Conference Semifinals.

FAST START
New York has posted a 31-11 series record when winning Game 1, including wins in six of the last seven playoff series in which the Rangers won the opening game.

BLUELINE SUPPORT
The Blueshirts’ 2-1 win in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against Ottawa was the first time in franchise history the Rangers had multiple goals scored by defensemen in Game 7 of a playoff series. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was also the first time since 1950 that any NHL team won a Game 7 without having a forward score a goal in the contest.

COMEBACK KIDS
New York became only the second team since 2005-06 to win Games 6 and 7 of a playoff series after losing Games 4 and 5, following Philadelphia in the 2011 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Buffalo. Teams in that situation are now 2-15 over the span. It was also just the second time in franchise history the Rangers have come back from a 2-3 series deficit to advance in the playoffs, having also done so in the 1994 Conference Finals against New Jersey.

SHOOTING GALLERY
The Rangers 41 shots in Game 5 of their first round matchup against Ottawa were the most by the Blueshirts in a playoff game since they registered 46 shots in a 2-1 double overtime win against Buffalo on Apr. 29, 2007, in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals series. The last time the Rangers registered at least 41 shots in a playoff game that ended in regulation was Apr. 20, 1997, when they registered 44 shots on goal against Florida in a 3-0 win in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup. *courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau

MILESTONE WIN
The Blueshirts’ 1-0 win in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against Ottawa was the 200th playoff victory in franchise history and the Rangers’ 38th postseason shutout all-time. It was also the 11th time New York won a playoff game with a final score of 1-0, but only the second time since the 1940 playoffs.

SETTING THE PACE
The Rangers held the lead for 191:52, were tied for 159:35 and trailed for 72:32 in their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against Ottawa. The Blueshirts tallied the first goal in five of the seven games.

PLAYOFF FIRSTS:
* Six Rangers made their NHL playoff debut in the first round – Stu Bickel, Michael Del Zotto, Carl Hagelin, John Mitchell, Anton Stralman, and Chris Kreider (NHL debut)
* Six Rangers registered their first career playoff point in the first round – Brian Boyle (goal), Anton Stralman (assist), Carl Hagelin (assist), Michael Del Zotto (assist), Derek Stepan (goal), and Chris Kreider (goal)
* Five Rangers notched their first career playoff goal in the first round – Brian Boyle, Anton Stralman, Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider, and Dan Girardi
* Five Rangers tallied their first career playoff assist in the first round – Artem Anisimov, Anton Stralman, Carl Hagelin, Michael Del Zotto, and Derek Stepan

KING HENRIK’S ASCENSION
Henrik Lundqvist continues to climb the Rangers’ all-time playoff leaders list in several goaltending categories. He posted a 39-save shutout, his fourth career in the playoffs, in a 1-0 win in Game 3 of the Conference Quarterfinals at Ottawa, to pass Andy Aitkenhead for fifth place on the Rangers’ all-time playoff shutouts list. Lundqvist passed John Vanbiesbrouck for third in franchise history with his 39th career playoff appearance in Game 4 at Ottawa, while his 25-save effort in a 3-2 win in Game 6 at Ottawa moved him past Dave Kerr for third all-time with 18 playoff victories.

COOL UNDER PRESSURE
Henrik Lundqvist has posted 30 or more saves in the playoffs 13 times, posting a 6-7 record with a 1.85 GAA, .945 Sv% and two shutouts in those contests.

THREE OF A KIND
On Apr. 16, Henrik Lundqvist became the third goaltender in NHL history, and second in as many days (Jonathan Quick, LAK), to post 39 or more saves in a 1-0 shutout victory in a non-overtime playoff game. *courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau

PLACE IN TEAM HISTORY
The Blueshirts’ 51 wins this season ranked second in franchise history, while their 109 points tied for second all-time. The Rangers also tied the franchise record for most road wins in a season with 24 victories away from MSG. The Rangers reached the 50-win mark for the third time in franchise history with a 4-1 victory vs. Montreal on Mar. 30, and eclipsed the 100-point mark for the seventh time with a 4-3 shootout win at Toronto on Mar. 24. The Blueshirts reached the 40-win mark in 61 games, which tied as the second fewest games to reach 40 wins in team history.

I’ll tell you what… While I’m very happy our Rangers are still alive, I can’t help but feel weird about the teams that are still left in the playoff hunt. I mean wow…. No pittsburgh, boston, Chicago, Detroit, Vancouver. I worry this will be piss poor for ratings….

  22. Just a breather from what when and where, and a note about one colossal cluster freak that was the Mets Rockies game last night.
( Where did they get this manager?)

It looked like a remake of the great movie that was about a bunch of Russians who wanted to learn to play American baseball, and they had a female go between who spoke English, and they hired an over the hill ball player to teach them how to play the game. I tell you it was both funny and interesting. Title” The Comrades of Summer” Check it out – it’s worth it. I have a copy of it on a vhs.

  27. a lot of people are predicting Flyers in a short series. i picked them in 7 but i am second guessing right now.

philly has all the offensive power to be sure. but we all know that the teams that play the best def wins in playoffs. AND, we all know this, although it hurts to say this, brodeur is still WAAAAY better than Bryz. I think the devs defensmen are suspect too, so i guess i will stick with my pick, but i am wavering

i guess my point is why would we expect something that is basic hockey 101 knowledge to all of a sudden change? defense wins in the playoffs

  28. Updates on Dubinsky? Boyle isn’t playing, I’d guess. Too early, hasn’t been a week. Is Eminger ready? If yes, Bickel goes on the wing as a fourth liner….Scott will continue trying different Hugo Bpss ties, I’m sure.

  29. Defense and goaltending, nyr13. If Bryzgalov doesn’t get his universe mentality together, they won’t win. Because they’re not scoring on Brodeur what they did on MAF……

  31. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

LoL – Ilb, have you seen Brodeur lately? Better than season’s start, but not a dominant goalie that can sweep a series. MAF is a whole different category, he’s more like a third defensman who bought his equipment at play-it-again sports so it’s just too big and smelly.

  32. exactly why i am regretting my pick of flyers in 7. oh well lets see how it plays out.

just got to hope that NYR is waiting for whoever wins that series

  33. I have, true fans. He is still a better goalie than both Bryzgalov and MAF showed so far in the playoffs.

  35. I don’t predictions for the record, true fans. Flyers defense, however, after Coburn and Timonen( who lost a step or two) is very suspect. Grossman hasn’t been what they expected, they lost Meszaros. They need Bryzgalov to hold them in low scoring games, because they will face those more often this round than before.

    Ilb,

This is certainly true. The devils are a unique hybrid of dynamic offense and decent defense. I think the Flyers are such a well-balanced team that plays a great puck possession game, it will be less of a problem than one might think. This series wont set any records for goal scoring, unfortunately, but I think the Flyers have been doing it so long without Pronger and Meszaros it won’t be that bad. We’ll see. I’m predicting Flyers in 6; i’ll eat crow if i’m wrong.

  38. ilb, i would hardly call philly well balanced. i would say they are extremely forward heavy. their defense is pretty bad and goaltending is, well you know

    NYR,
You’re right. I meant well-balanced in terms of forward carrying the offense, playing hard, some hitting, youth, old, North-South and East-West. They have 3 pretty solid lines.

I think they’ll still be better defensively than last series. They beat the best offensive team in the league, you’re gonna let up some goals… let’s see if they keep it within a one possession football game here on out.

  43. Exactly, nyr13. That is the reason why they’ve had troubles beating teams with good defense and goaltending ( Rangers, anyone?) all year long. If, however, Bryzgalov plays well, the Devils will be done. But it won’t be as easy as some think.

    CCCP April 27th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
I must tell you guys what happened about hour ago…

I went on Brighton Beach to buy some Russky food for dinner… So, I park my car by the boardwalk and start walking towards where all the shops at… I see in front of me a group of people (five of them, 2 dudes and three chicks, one of which is at least over 50) walking in the same direction with me but a bit in front of me… so anyway… they all have red t-shirts on…I get closer and I see number 8 on the back and name above the number “Ovechkin” … for a minute I felt like I was in the movie “Being John Malkovich” where John Malkovich gets inside of his own head and sees nothing but himself… it was so weird seeing so many “Ovechkins” at the same time… so, me being me… with my big mouth I had to of course say something… so I get a little closer to them, but still behind them.. I said: “Ovechkin sux” and already playing all sorts of comeback lines in my head to throw back at them… but, I get no response… they keep walking… “OK!” I thought… so I level up with them and say “Are you guys ok? Or should I squirt you with some water?” and I say it with a big smile on my face… They all turned to me at the same time and I could see fear in their eyes … (I have my 3 weeks old beard with hairs pointing in every possible direction and a clean shaved head) they look at me in silence and suddenly older woman grabs one of the girls by hand and says this to me in very broken English “no thank you, we no need water” at this point I couldn’t hold it anymore and sprayed them with my laughter! I swear, they were scared of me! LOL they stopped and waited for me to go way ahead of them! I was laughing so hard that in the store I bought 2 pounds of blood-sausage which I absolutely can’t stand! Don’t ask me why I did it…
WE MUST WIN TOMORROW! LET’S GO RANGERS!

  56. OK, so it is time to keep the engine moving and focus on the series ahead. Tough turn around time may hurt guys like Boyle, Dubie and Callie. Look forward to seeing them all in the line up.

  62. Sofia Vergara! Oh baby! Don’t even get me started. If I had to die of suffocation, I’d probably choose her chesticles to do the job.

oh was it the year before? my bad! Avery was benched by Torts that’s why he wasn’t in the lineup…

but the sausage thing is 110% accurate! ;)

  67. ilb, you said that that Grossmann hasnt been what the Flyers expected. What do you mean? Ive read the Flyers blog almost daily the past few weeks and they LOVE him there. And they just signed him for like 5 years I believe. Flyers fans are saying that Holmgren basically stole him from Dallas.

  70. Gaborik will break out. I expect this series to have more open ice for the Rangers than there was the against the Sens. Sens play a tight checking game. I think we handle Washington’s guys. Washington doesn’t play as safe.

  71. The 800 lb. gorilla question is….can Boyler play?

That could mean the difference in the series. We need him to shut down the Backstrom unit.

Rangers winning is still all I care about. Thats it.

  78. They gave up 2nd and 3rd for Grossman, Lev. He was supposed to add the physical presence they lost in Pronger. He’s been ok, but has been injury prone as of the last 2 seasons in Dallas. He was concussed by Malkin and didn’t play in their last game against Pittsburg. Not sure what his availability is now.

WOW, Rimouski is killing it and so is that straka kid

  82. just watching a tape of Thursday nights finish. add up all the blocked passes AND shots, wide shots and King Henry saves. wow. a stupid non-clear by Anisimov caused such turmoil and pressure at 5 minute mark. our team needs lessons on how to clear the damn puck.

But, through all that pressure our guys are positioned so well. skates turned, bodies wide, there’s just so little room.

Man, and did The Kreider, Step and Callie stand tall as any of our forwards in the last few minutes. wow. Mitchell with a big hit. McD and G and Staal. Even though we were hemmed in, not much to shoot at. and when you do, good luck getting it by Henry.

  83. Rangers in 4. Caps suck and Bruins suck. I dont care if Henrik got torched by the Caps last year. I dont care that this Caps team is playing better thn last year.
