NEW YORK RANGERS 2011-12 TEAM AWARD WINNERS
New York, April 7, 2012 – The New York Rangers have announced the 2011-12 team award winners, including the Rangers’ MVP, the Players’ Player Award and the John Halligan Good Guy Award.
The Rangers’ MVP, voted on by the New York Rangers media, was awarded to Henrik Lundqvist. This is the sixth consecutive year that Lundqvist has won the award, which marks a franchise record. In addition, his six Rangers’ MVP awards ties him with Brian Leetch for the most in franchise history.
Lundqvist has posted a record of 39-17-5 this season, along with a 1.93 goals against average, .931 save percentage and eight shutouts. He is currently tied for second in the NHL in goals against average and third in shutouts, while ranking third in the league in wins and save percentage. His 39 wins mark a career-high, and ranks second all-time on the Rangers’ single season wins list.
The Players’ Player Award, voted on by the Rangers players, was given to Ryan Callahan. The award recognizes the Rangers player who best exemplifies what it means to be a teammate. This is the second consecutive year that Callahan has won the award. Callahan was also named winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award earlier this season. Voted on by the fans and recognizing the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty,” the award is named after New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the call of duty in November of 1988. This award has been given annually to the player who fans believe plays with extra effort on the ice. Callahan joined Adam Graves as the only players who have won the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award three times, having previously captured the honor in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Callahan has registered 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points, along with 59 penalty minutes this season. He currently ranks third among NHL forwards in blocked shots (88), ranks sixth overall in hits (269) and is tied for fifth in power play goals (13). Callahan has tied the franchise record and ranks fourth in the league in game winning goals (nine), and is tied for the team lead and 17th in the NHL in shorthanded points (three). His 29 goals is a career-high.
The John Halligan Good Guy Award, selected by the NY chapter of the PHWA, was awarded to Brian Boyle. The award is named in honor of John Halligan, a longtime Rangers and NHL Public Relations executive, who passed away in 2010, and recognizes players’ cooperation with the media.
Boyle has registered 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points, along with 57 penalty minutes this season. He ranks second on the team and is tied for 15th in the league in hits (234) and ranks sixth among NHL forwards in blocked shots (83). The Rangers have posted a record of 20-2-1 when he registers a point.
