Kinda simple, kinda complicated.
If the Rangers win, they take the Presidents’ Trophy and face Washington in the first round, probably starting Thursday at MSG.
If not, they can still win the Presidents’ Trophy by finishing tied with Vancouver, which plays Edmonton tonight at 10. And they can still face Washington, Florida or Ottawa, pending tonight’s results, in the first round.
Here’s my take on the possibilities, and I could be wrong (for the first time). With Ottawa’s loss today, if Washington wins tonight and Florida gets a point tonight, it’s Rangers-Ottawa in the first round. If the Rangers win tonight, it’s Rangers-Caps. If Washington wins and Florida gets zero points, it’s Rangers-Panthers. Anybody agree with that?

I think about 2 weeks ago I asked everyone here if we were in this situation should the Rangers tank to avoid the Capitals. I think the overwhelming response was yes but that they’d never do that. But now that we are here, I will say that 1. I think there’s no way the Caps beat us in a series, that period aside, 2. Maybe I would rather play Florida or Ottawa anyway and let NJ deal with Ovechkin rather than be rewarded for coming in 6th by drawing the Panthers (much like we were in 2007 in drawing the Thrashers), 3. Presidents Trophy is overrated but still possible.

I’m afraid this will be a real embarrassment, much worse, than against Pens – Rangers will open game in a desperate attempt and this will be more Caps goals with their skills. This season showed that Washington is a very physiologically vulnerable team and when opponents score first, they usually collapsed, but if scenario is like this – they flourish. Rangers weren’t prepared to this particular game. No must win, thou…So,relax and laugh, what else we have to do?

Pres Trophy – just a bragging rights. But it will be mentioned for a long, long time in years to come as an accomplishment – “Best in a League” in 2011/12 season for Rangers fans. Considering not total assuredness to grab the Cup, it is a great season achievement!

Not sugar-coating the last two Rangers games, but the Blues have lost four straight and six of eight, while the Canucks just lost to the all-conquering Flames and Luongo was pulled in the game before that. So arguable how much of a “top team” either of those have looked going into the playoffs.
2 things bother me the most in this game: total lack of offence (I wouldn’t mind lose 4:5, but not 5or 6:0) and big time psychological advantage Craps will have against when (and if) PO series will start. Disgusting.
