Capitals at Rangers tonight

The Presidents’ Trophy belongs to the Rangers with a win, or if they finished tied with Vancouver in any way on this final night of the regular season. The Canucks play at home against Edmonton tonight at 10 p.m.

This could well be a first-round preview, though it remains entirely possible that the Rangers end up playing Ottawa or Florida, too. All 30 NHL teams are in action today/tonight, including the much-anticipated Flyers-Penguins game this afternoon.

This one’s a 6:30 start on NBC Sports. Rangers’ “jerseys off our backs” ceremony follows the game.

The Rangers’ magic number to clinch the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top team during the regular season is two points relative to Vancouver and St. Louis. It would be the third time in franchise history the Blueshirts captured the Presidents’ Trophy, having previously done so in 1991-92 (50-25-5, 105 pts) and 1993-94 (52-24-8, 112 pts). In addition, the Rangers would be only the second organization to have won the Presidents’ Trophy three or more times since the award was introduced in 1985-86 (Detroit, six times).

New York continues to climb the team’s all-time single season wins and points lists, currently ranking second in wins and tied for second in points. The Rangers reached the 50-win mark for the third time in franchise history with a 4-1 victory vs. Montreal on Mar. 30, and eclipsed the 100-point mark for the seventh time with a 4-3 shootout win at Toronto on Mar. 24. The Blueshirts reached the 40-win mark in 61 games, which is tied as the second fewest games to reach 40 wins in team history.

The Rangers rank among the NHL leaders in several statistical categories…

  • T-1st in points (109)
  • T-1st in win% (.673)
  • 1st in wins (51)

  • New York clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a 5-3 win on Tuesday at Philadelphia; It is the first time since 1993-94 the Rangers finished atop the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference standings
  • The Rangers became the first Eastern Conference team, and second in the league overall, to clinch a playoff spot with a 4-2 win on Mar. 19 vs. NJD (game #72); The last time the Blueshirts clinched a playoff berth that early was in 1991-92, when New York clinched on Mar. 8 (through game #68) following a Philadelphia defeat to Vancouver
  • The Rangers tied the franchise record for most road wins in a season with 24 victories away from MSG; New York also won 24 road games last season and in 1993-94
  • The Rangers posted a combined record of 19-4-5 in back-to-back games this season, including a 9-2-3 (3-1-0 at home, 6-1-3 on the road) record in the first game and a 10-2-2 (6-0-0 at home, 4-2-2 on the road) mark in the second

  1. FIRST!

    Any word on Stepan?

The fine on Torts was the biggest steaming pile of horsecarcillo that anyone could imagine. The NHL is infuriating.

  2. Did the NHL state the reason for the fine? Do they need to state a reason? Can Torts appeal?

I would think that Crosby should be fined after his comment. The only difference is that Crosby is a player so the fine should be more.

What does the Hockey Night in Canada crew have to say about this fine?

I cannot wait to see what they say on NHL NBC tonight!

  3. Oriental grounds crew worker on

The NHL is nothing but a shill to the whining Penguins thanks to Buttman! I have the utmost respect for Torts and totally agree with his comments about said Ice Chickens and hope that they get their heads handed to them by the Flyers! Ever since Cindy’s return, the NHL has been prostituting themselves to this piece of carcillo and the other cry baby Mario LemieuX…

  4. Caps have huge goalie issues. Do you glide and play them 1st round or go after Presidents cup? Hmmmm

    Game Day! LGR!!! (Or not)

  5. I’ll be there for my 10th game this season looking for win #10. No reason not to go for it. LGR!

  6. Johnnyboy, may be early, but I want to clarify. If we beat the Caps, we play them and we win Presidents Cup.

If we lose to them, they have a chance to rise up and we could get Florida (If Florida loses).

I’d hate to lose the PC only to find FL, in a later game, wins and keeps their position.

Wash has a superstar and that scares me. We had one of their alleged goalie AHL’ers come in and beat us in a playoff series already. However, I think we play our game, to be a springboard to the playoffs and if we win, we win. So be it!! LGR!!!

  7. Thanks matty… Still think I’d take a chance with 3rd string goalie, despite ghosts of past.

  8. Let’s play the Caps, knocking out Dale Hunter and Ovie would be sweet. Who cares what the NBC clowns are going to say. Devils knockout Fla and we retire Marty in round 2. Let Pitt/Philly/Boston eliminate each other and we will beat one in the ECF. Shaping up great…….. If we play well.

  9. Any chance we’ll get to see the jersey ceremony on NB(I can’t)C Sports….As for possible opponents…we can beat anybody-so I will take anybody we are dealt….and that includes the Pens…especially the pens! I hope they enjoy their time in the City of BL…leta fire up those orange and black ESB lights….

  10. Tuxedo – topic was discussed after the Blues-Coyotes game last night on NBC Sports with Mike Milbury and Mike Keenan.

Keenan said that he saw no reason that Tortorella should have been fined and Milbury agreed. They asked if Torts would apologize as Crysbaby claimed he would and Keenan laughed saying Torts will be apologizing.

  11. Good morning all! Ugh, ending the season with NBC. If they don’t show the jersey ceremony, Tony will hear me scream in AZ. LGR!!!!

  12. Milbury saying Tortorella should not have been fined now makes me think the fine was justified and should have been $20bn.

  13. Funny part of the Milbury-Keenan conversation between periods 2 and 3 was when they were discussing how well Mike Smith has been playing. Milbury asked Keenan if he ever had a goalie that was that dominant. Keenan looked absolutely stunned at him and said “yeah, a few – Lindbergh, Belfour, Richter'”

After the game, Keenan brought it up again and told Milbury that he had 7 goalies that won either the Vezina or Stanley Cup.

  14. Keenan may have coached (and pulled) all of those big names, but he hasn’t left a legacy like Rickety DiPi to the hockey world.

    Milbury 1-0 Keenan

  15. Good morning, boneheads!

Big hockey day. I wouldn’t overanalyze all the possible first round scenarios. If they play their game, neither Washington or Florida stand a chance. And I have no doubt they will come out and play hard tonight for many reasons, one of them being what Torts did. I strongly believe he knew exactly what he was doing, even though it came out stronger than he had wanted perhaps. Not only he fired up his own team, there is now even more hatred towards Pittsburgh throughout the league. Including Philadelphia, who they are playing today and the next 4-7 games. Berube, Milbury said similar things before, and not much NHL or Pittsburgh can do about it. And $20K fine didn’t make it better, quite opposite.
As far as NBCSN- last night Keenan said he didn’t agree with fine, and Milbury pretty much repeated what he said before about the Pens, just used softer wording.

Fasten your seatbelts, folks, it’s going to be fun!

  16. The NHLPA should step in and publicly and loudly pay Tort’s fine. I am certain that every player except for between 2 & 4 would gladly sign-off on such an expenditure.

  17. ilb, oh man!!!! Great day for it….you might have better luck if you moved to the dock though :)

  18. ilb,
agree…I think the fine handed to Tort’s is only going to make things worse.
Especially since the comments Tort’s make were in response to a dirty hit that
the league did nothing about. From the outside it sure looks like the league
was trying to “protect” the Pitt franchise.

  19. You guys see that cartoon on youtube where Clarke rips into Cindy? Lots of non-allowed blog language but hartnelling hysterical.

  20. Hey Carp…you should re-post that Tort’s presser where all he said was no for like 15-20 seconds and left the podium and compare it to the $20,000 fine one. The $20,000 presser has 80 pages of comments on youtube and growing by the second. Guess the NHL doesn’t understand social media!

  21. I wonder if Torts would have been fined if he didn’t use the f-bombs. Dregger seems to think so. It was the profanity that got him suspended, not the emotion or anger displayed.

  22. this is total BS! i understand the language being an issue in Torts comments, but was the anything else said that wasnt true. The total bias-ness, (if there’s such a word) from the league and bettman show there’s some what of a conspriancy with Pitt and the NHL. Why is it that what the league wants is what the rest of the NHL fan base has to accept. Cindy and Gina ARE the 2 biggest whinners in the league and IF we watch tape of Cindy and Gina all year, you’ll see that Gina is one of the dirtiest players in the league with his stick and Cindy is a cheapshot artist, when he doesnt have a headache. I never want to see another Ranger/ Pitt game and our Blueshirts come out flat. no matter if we have the season locked up or not 110% full bore, drive them into the ground. Never thought i’d say these 2 words. GO FLYERS!

  23. Are the playoff cards still set so that winner of Flyers vs Pens will get Bruins if they move on? If so what happens when Zdeno puts Cindy into the partition? Suspension or not? The NHL would really have a tough call there. Is there any “Carpese” to be used for that hit?

  24. Oh, that’s not a tough call at all. Not only would Chara be suspended for the hit, but he might be retroactively suspended for the Pacioretty hit if the NHL deems it was “practicing for a future hit on Sidney Crosby”.

  25. Have a great Holy Saturday, all. Continued Passover blessings to all Jewish boneheads as well.

    LGR! LGF!

  26. Ria(the silent bonehead) on

ilb I think you misunderstood what I said last night about the picture of Wicky’s girls I didn’t mean I wanted you to share the photo just though it must have be a lovely picture of them thats all .I know its Wicky’s property & of course I wouldn’t want you to share it without his permission.

  27. Ria, I understood it exactly, I was kdding…In fact, knowing Wicky, I’m sure he’d be happy to share these pictures with everyone. Well, maybe except the last one, I suspect mrs Wicky may object…:-)))))

  28. I don’t know if anyone else watched NHL Tonight last night, but they had an excerpt EJ, Deb, and Shanny. Shanny went on to explain the knee on knee hit with Orpik, and also talked about how he and the GMs got together earlier in the season to decide how these hits would be penalized and such. He looked so uncomfortable talking about it and justifying why it wasn’t more than it was. I bet Buttman or some other NHL exec was off to the side dangling the zip lock back with Shanny’s b*lls in it that he handed over when he took the job. I couldn’t be more disappointed in the league, and one of my all time favorite players in Shanny. Really really got this wrong again. You can NOT base a suspension on whether the player hurt was seriously injured or not. Every player is going to react differently to every hit. I can get hit in the head 100 times and not get a concussion, and my brother can get flicked in the ear once and get a concussion. If intent to injure or negligence is there, SUSPEND!!!! End of story.

  29. Feeling much better today.

    Is CLeo w u on the deck/dock, ilb? Cleo= combination of Casey/Leo

  30. Hey, Nasty!

His explanation doesn’t compute. Unless they forgot to convey the message on how these should be called to the refs. Because it was a 5 min major and game misconduct.

  31. You either suspend or allow players to police themselves. I would be OK with either.

  32. Ria(the silent bonehead) on

Carp if your at the game tonight can you take Torts on the side & let him know that the boneheads are 1000 % behind him? Thank you in advance. Also anyone who wants to watch as many games as they want today Center Ice has a free preview going on the MLB stations. Sadly i’m going to miss most of the flyers-piss game as I have a very important date but i’ll be home in time to see my boys! LETS GO RANGERS ♥

  33. Ria, is that on every network provider?? My wife might have to go to the easter egg hunt solo with the kids if that is true, haha.

  34. Ria(the silent bonehead) on

Nasty I have cablevision & I watched the games on Thursday it will say MLB where the Center Ice stations usually are .

  35. Was there a font change to the blog? The names look different.

Beat the Caps play the Caps. Holtby.

  36. Ria(the silent bonehead) on

The free preview is suppose to go through 4/ 15 I think & I think you might even get some of the playoff games also.

  37. Does *LW* know if *Sestito* is playing today? Does that mean the Rangers have to dress *John Scott*?

  38. so, you want a loss today and no Presidents’ Trophy, eric?

Also, once again, it isn’t President’s Cup. That’s a golf tournament. Even the Post had it wrong in a headline this morning.

  39. I meant, no, there hasn’t been a font change, as far as I know.

I don’t know if Sestito is playing against the Penguins today. I just thought he’s been hurt for a while now.

  40. McSnobbelier on

Nasty, I would love to see a clip of that as I too am upset with Shanny and am a fan of his as a player. I really thought things would be better with him in that position – if I could see that uncomfort, it would help me reconcile my Shanny fandom.

  41. Does it come as a surprise that Carp is unsure as to the happenings of his own page, Manny?

  42. Welcome to the world of corporate business, Brendan Shanahan! A few make decisions, the rest are just muppets.

  43. 24 hour old wickster said Hi! She opened her eyes and asked what time the faceoff was….

  44. Meantime, Wicky is running around with 2 other young wicksters shopping and doing all necessary preparations to take them home, hopefully today. Life’s good!

  45. Johnny LaRue on

Even if they end up #1 overall tonight, that still won’t mean they are the World’s Greatest, which is better than just #1.

  46. Cannot wait till 4 pm. Although I wouldnt be surprised if the game will be a snoozer. NHL probably reached out to both teams and warned them. And by both teams i mean the Flyers.

  47. Johnny LaRue on

Oh sure ilb, coming in here with all your macho head games. You think you’re better than me don’t you.

  48. Johnny, you think you’re tough picking on an old man? Try to pick on someone your own age…..

  49. Johnny LaRue on

I still thought you could do it.

Wouldn’t it be something if when the Rangers are standing in line tonight and they take off their sweaters, they painted their chests to spell out something like “Winners beat whiners”.

  50. Ilb, are there any non narcotic non addictive muscle relaxers i can ask my dr for? I cant use addictive stuff bc of my extreme, addictive, ocd personality.

  51. And i know none of u wouldve ever guessed im an extreme personality. -KILL THE REFEREES!- :)

  52. yes carp i want a loss and florida win. the only problem is a ranger loss doesnt guarantee florida in 1st rd. boucher in net for carolina tonight. no cam ward. fla prob wins so in essence then rangers better off winning. sucks that florida game is 730 ours is 630. anyone want ottawa. i think i prefer caps over ottawa.

either way the rangers lose in the 1st round this reg season meant squat.

  53. There’s no way a nationally televised broadcast will stick around to cover an event that primarily has only local interest, even if it is NY which is a major market.

Forgive me for revisiting old news but I am compelled to comment on Orpiks hit. I went back and looked at it several times. Approx 15 feet from Stepan he plants both legs and glides toward Stepan. Right before contact he subtly leans right and begins turning his right foot outside. IMHO he clearly intended to make contact with Stepan’s leg which was the only part of Step’s body that he touched. Clearly a dirty hit which deserved punishment. Question: if you rob a bank and get caught, is your sentence less if you got $100,00 and more if you got $1,000,000?

  54. I will be all over this free preview. Thank you for putting that out there. I will try to find a clip of Shanny on NHL Live.

  55. Johnny LaRue on

If you walk into a bank and the teller says “Hey” instead of “Hello” are you still entitled to $100?

  56. If the bank is owned by the NHL, the teller would be fined and the customer would have his bank fees raised.

  57. lev, you and I are agreeing on most everything lately. Carp IS a troublemaker. I like it!

  58. I don’t think repeat offender, history in the league, or if there is an injury should make a difference. Intent and negligence should mean see you later chump.

  59. What a last week of the season both on and off the ice.The time is now.Take this game .The road to the Cup goes via the Lincoln .See you on Thur. The best of Holidays to all.

  60. Did anyone hear that fool roenick saying sidney crosby the other nignt, actually saying CINDY because he cant speak for carcillo.

Anyone on the myoflex pain cream….? Before i blow more money on it on amazon.

  61. agree, Nasty … though I don’t mind a few extra games being tacked on for the repeat offenders … the piece of carcillo Cookes of the world.

  62. GOOD MORNING, AMERICA! What’s good?

Torts is down 50 grand? That is a lot of good ties lost!

I think it’s time for the Flys and the Rangers to stop whining about the Pens being a whinny bunch and actually do something about those ass-wipes! LET’S GO FLYS! (BARF!!)

  63. McSnobbelier on

Thank you Nasty!…I’ll have a look in a bit, old lady has me toiling in the yard.

  64. I agree Carp. I also think you have to come down hard on first time offenders so it prevents it frok happening again. Maybe Cooke wouldn’t be such a giant smelly piece of Carcillo if he was slapped with a nice suspension the very first time he did something questionable.

  65. CCCP, I agree 100%. Our boys have got to start being immediately responsive to the over the line behavior and stop waiting for the league to act in a responsible manner. I wonder how long Shanny can stomach being a figurehead and pawn of the front office?

  66. Just realized that the first commenter ever on the Zetterburger was Justin Bourne. How did I manage that? More importantly, how do I get him to do it again?

  67. Billybleedsblue on

Rangers come out towing the line tonight, believe it.

I too watched the Shanahan bit on NHL last night. At first I thought Shanahan must have been waiting for the medical report on Stepan but then I learned the decision was made earlier than I thought…

    Let’s go flyers?

  68. McSnobbelier on

Sorry Nasty… Shanny was not uncomfortable enough for me in that clip. He’s still in my penalty box for being such a wuss when in a suit! He’s certainly anything but when on the ice in a jersey.

  69. Shanahan’s considerable resume on the ice , at least for me, calls into serious question his true authority in his position. How long before he spits the bit which surely he’s gagging on?

  70. Nasty-

I think it’s so difficult to know a players intent that the player’s history is an acceptable tool in helping make that determination.
Has the player in the past shown a willingness to be careless or reckless?
Has he already demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice another players safety in order to make a play?
I have no problem using this to decide whether a player gets the benefit of the doubt or the severity of the penalty. The injury aspect, I generally agree with.

  71. for anyone going to the game
please see if you can get this going

    instead of a POTVIN SUCKS!!!!
try to get people to yell
    of start a chant of
    BETTMAN SUCKS!!! during the game
to let the idiocy of the nhl know how we feel.

  72. THANK YOU Spiderpig!

Everyone got their shaving cream ready? Cameras? Paul Mara Playoff Beard Competition starts soon!!!

  73. oh yeah
    wishing folks
    a happy Passover
    and a happy

and a good day for anyone who doesn’t celebrate either!

  74. Milbury just said that Rangers should want to best the Caps for more than the Presidents Trophy and then predicted Rangers will win an easy short series against the Caps. Haven’t heard the paid idiots talk about the Rangers like this since 94.

  75. Pretty sure I saw Steve McIntyre as a call up for the Pens. This game could be a bloodbath

  76. sens lost to a bruin team that left chara bergeron seidenberg and thomas home on thurs. they have lost all week since they clinched

  77. JimboWoodside on

This game may be a disappointment – but I hope not!! Let’s go, violence!

  78. JimboWoodside on

So many times these over-hyped “payback” games amount to nothing. Hope this one is an exception!

  79. Looks as promised so far…..Shelley is playing his last game pof the season….

  80. JimboWoodside on

And by the way, “Count” has an extra vowel in it – *you* guess which letter it is….

  81. why would rangers dress stepan tonite ,akes no sense. play scott why take any chances

  82. JimboWoodside on

Those Pitt fans really suck! Jagr only won them 2 Cups and gave them his best years.

  83. No, ilb, he still sounds English. Just still got the same squeaky, south-eastern whine he’s always had.

Must sound refined and distinguished to American ad agencies.

  84. Rinaldo with the gamer and a 5? yeah, the league ain;t kissing the Whiners assen, suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure

  85. JimboWoodside on

I thought he sounded Australian, LW! Just goes to show what I know! (I didn’t even know that it was Beckham, so I guess I’m hopeless..)

  86. JimboWoodside on

Jeeez! NHL can’t make itself more obvious as to who the “house team” is.

  87. I don’t know guys. That was a pretty brutal hit and it was clearly boarding and it looked like he gave a shove at the end there. Head + Boards = Gamer.

  88. JimboWoodside on

    >>>Australia is south east of England, come to think of it, Jimbo :-)

    Touche’, Captain! :-)

  89. Hey *LW* – just so you know, I couldn’t go to the *Orchid Show* because I pulled some muscles in my neck and have been laying down and whimpering like a *European* all weekend. Guess I will have to go next weekend.

  90. JimboWoodside on

    Manny missed the Orchid Show!!

How did you pull those neck muscles? Hmmm……?

  91. I wish I knew jimbo. It’s just part of getting old. It happens to me once a year at least. And it’s really, really bad.

    1-1 Phlyers score, Schenn.

OK – they finally showed a replay. It is a hit from behind but it wasn’t square on Michalek’s back and Rinaldo peeled off and went after the puck. I would have to see it again to have a real opinion. These things are so hard for me to judge anyways. But now I would say that it is kind of overboard to give him anything more than 2-Minutes I guess.

  92. JimboWoodside on

Looked like a standard boarding penalty to me, Manny – not a 5-minute major…but I’m no official.

  93. I have to agree with you, Jimbo. Just boarding. I guess they are being extra sensitive. Whatever, I don’t actually care that much. I hope these two teams beat the snot out of each other and I hope we don’t lose focus on what we have to do which is beat the Sens/Caps/Panthers 4 times.

  94. JimboWoodside on

Sorry about the neck, Manny – I hear you. Did you try putting an ice pack on it?

  95. Sympathies, Manny. Must be the sudden movements when you duck to avoid the women opposite your window seeing your telescope.

  96. JimboWoodside on

I think the officials were just looking for a way to get Rinaldo out of the game, to ward off other stuff that might happen later.

I don’t care either – as long as they kill each other in this game and in the playoffs.

  97. I mostly just overdose on aleve, wear a neck brace, drink wine and lay down a lot on a tempurpedic pillow, take many hot showers and rub tiger balm all over my neck and shoulders like my name is Emmitt Smith.

  98. Yup, Milbury said it. ” Preventive medicine”. Otherwise that would be a 2 min call.
Did I just agree with Milbury? Honey, where is my toothbrush?

  99. JimboWoodside on

Manny, I had a completely different idea about the cause of your injury – but I dare not mention it here. :-o

  100. Well, I think we now know that officials were told to make sure the Flyers didn;t goon it up.

  101. Jeez, Manny, that sounds like a multistep upproach to a simple issue. Try vodka. Outside of your neck, and in :)

  102. Thanks, ilb. I find that too much drinking leads to sleeping in poor positions which compounds the issue. Maybe manning up and acting like an American is the answer?

  103. Man up, Manny! ( show that one to mrs)

I can’t believe she fell for that bull carcillo excuse to skip the *Orchid Show*…( do not let her read this one)

  104. JimboWoodside on

Mickey, Emrick did the earlier NBC game – didn’t notice Pierre, but probably…
