Gomez for No Gomez

So here we are, the Rangers on the verge of clinching the Patrick Division and the No. 1 seed in the East, in the hunt for the Presidents’ Trophy in the final week of the season, and who knows what in the playoffs.

And the Montreal Canadiens, that prideful iconic hockey organization, a laughingstock not in the playoff race, a franchise which on Thursday fired its general manager and his predecessor, Habs legend Bob Gainey.

I’m not here to make fun, or make light, of the Canadiens’ plight.

But it sure has been an interesting turn of events since the Rangers’ Glen Sather traded Scott Gomez to then-GM Gainey.

Or, as we here like to sum up the trade: Gomez for Marian Gaborik, Ryan McDonagh, Brandon Prust, Pavel Valentenko and No Gomez.

Which always makes me google this story for a laugh or two.

There are others, I’m sure I’ve seen over the years since the deal. So feel free to link to your own favorites.

Anyway, I’m thinking this might be the column I write for tomorrow, how this trade shaped the fortune of two clubs, especially the one on top, which changed the look of its roster … special thanks to the Canadiens.

  7. Reading that article makes me feel like I’m reading National Lampoon. I think the writer would like to have that one back.

  8. I love it when folks break out advanced statistics and then use them to “prove” a point when they don’t understand what the statistics show at all.

Trade was so bad you’d almost expect that Milbury was whispering in Gainey’s ear at the time.

  9. I tired to take this post seriously…but now….I can’t be held accountable!

    I suck.

  12. I doubt anyone answered it in the earlier post, Tony. That was the first I saw of that question. My assumption was Biron but I was shocked to double check that on this fantasy site I trust for this info and find out it’s HANK

Boyle centering Callahan and Dubi? Torts has earned the benefit of the doubt, but I’ll just say that this seems to be a mistake.

    Tebow, Avery, Nash.

  15. “I’m not mentioning Gomez, Pyatt or Busto for reasons of insignificance.”

  16. Gomez the Cat wants everyone to know that he is a big fat, snuggly, love monster.

ORR, I thought you might appreciate that video…

  17. Gomez had a monster playoff the year they upset both the Caps and Pens in 2010, lets not forget.

Habs eventually lost to the Flyers, who lost to the Hawks.

  18. So this friend of mine, who just started liking hockey, is telling my why Matt Hendricks is the best penalty shooter in the game and how he could “eat up” Hank. haha

  19. See, Carp, these gems are why you are the absolute best! Whew, I needed a good laugh…thanks

Glen Healy???? I doubt he’d even been born then. This was a long long time ago when Emile Francis was the Ramblers goaltender…no mask, and more guts than any player I’ve ever seen. Got hit in the face by a Terry Reardon shot and they carried him off ice. ( no backup goalies then). He came back on the ice a while later with wires coming of of his nose, and his entire face black and blue, and finished the game. Terry Reardon was brother to the great Habs player Kenny Reardon. Emile the Cat was one terrific goaltender. He did splits the way the Ballet Russe does them, and he used his blocker to back up his glove. He used to practice taking shots from his team mates during practice and all he did was deflect the shots with the broad side of his stick, and shot after shot was directed into the upper balcony. It was something to see. I don’t believe that there is a goaltender now who could begin to duplicate what the Cat accomplished.

  21. I used the term “upper balcony” there were none…the seats went up to the ceiling, and it is that area where a balcony can normally be found that I was referring to.

It almost tickles you pink :) When Gomez touches the puck for the Habs I can see 20,000 people cheering tonight!!!

Trade of Sather’s Career!!! Looking back dumping Renny for Tort’s, and this trade made this club what it is today, and maybe throw in the Richards signing last year, oh and NO GOMEZ!!!

GREAT laugh on the archieved article.

  26. Sioux-per-man on

Eddie – LOL – to true. Unfortuatly the Penguins still have a chance, where I can’t say the same for Newt.

Gabby scores a hatty, while McD shuts down Gomez….. life is good today :)

Boyle btwn Cally and Dubi – where is Step or is Torts tapping into Boyles’ hot goal streak?

Step btwn Artie and Prust or Artie btwn Feds and Prust?

    Is John Scott playing?

Dog and cats living together? What in tarnation is going on?

  28. Sioux-per-man on

So what chant comes out of the Blue section tonight –

    “Thank You Gainey”
    “Where is Gomez”

  29. My initial reaction to the Cally-Boyle-Dubi line was that Torts would send them out against Erik Cole.

  30. I hope it’s relevant to the game and not something stupid like, “we want Pittsburgh.” That stuff makes me nervous.

  31. Sioux-per-man on

Manny just think of the the Flyers grinding out Pittsburgh in the first round :)

That’s almost as good as holding the Mega Millions winner……. well ALMOST!!!!

Did you get your ticket yet?

  32. You’re correct, Manny….Gomez is on IR since mid-March. Concussion, courtesy of Tyler Myers.

  33. “Both teams accomplished what they wanted to do, but in terms of who will probably get the most reward with the least risk, it has to be Montreal”….has to be. yeah, you really got a hold of that one. hahahahaha.

  34. Carp- I think we’re all looking forward to that article. As it is that trade was huge, but can you imagine if we’re really successful in the playoffs what that trade will look like in hindsight?

  35. JimboWoodside on

Too bad Slats couldn’t have weaseled Pacioretty from them in that deal – that would have made it even better!

  36. billybleedsblue on

*Which always makes me google this story for a laugh or two.*

“Nevertheless New York got Gabroik also by clearing Gomez, who is a huge risk in himself.”

  37. So, what happened to Gomez. He wasn’t totally useless with the Rangers, but he certainly wasn’t worth 7 million + per year. With Montreal he’s been as close to totally useless as Eric Christensen was with the Rangers. In fact, he’s been worse. What happened?

How do you go from a main contributor with NJ to totally useless in such a short time?

  38. I like Gomez – he reminds me Adams Family. Could be easily one of the characters. …and name is appropriate…

  39. JimboWoodside on

Max Pacioretty has turned into a pretty good player – he may be their best one at this point – and he’s another American!

  40. Pacioretty is too fragile, never played close to (82) full season games in NHL. Big whiner too. His American origin doesn’t add to hockey club per se. Rightfully, NO. There were and are better choices.

  41. …That’s not to say he can’t score goal, particular when it comes against the Rangers.

  42. It’s pronounced Go-homez.

16 million NYR paid him for 2 years. Ugh. Waste. Nylander, you f’d up.

  43. JimboWoodside on

    >>>…That’s not to say he can’t score goal, particular when it comes against the Rangers.

That’s what I’m saying, 4ever – he always seems to do well against us. And it isn’t his fault that Chara ran him into that stanchion a season or so ago – I think anyone would have gotten messed up from that massive hit.

  44. JimboWoodside on

It was a timely Reasoner goal, too! Got the ball rolling on the Pens 2nd Isles defeat!

  45. JimboWoodside on

Did anybody see the hit by Chimera in the B’s/Craps game last night? Looked like Chimera charged into McQuade from the blue line against the boards behind the goal, but it didn’t get him any disciplinary action.

  46. Ha, Dubiii! A new addition to boneheads vocabulary: “Gomez ( v)- to score a goal once a year”

  47. not yet, Hambone … but we are closing in on those first-round Baby Buffalo chicken sangwiches, ain’t we?

  48. Thank God, they took that Beckham/package ad off the skyscraper on 8th Avenue. Now my eyes can heal … pending what replaces it.

  49. Carp, is there any word or news on Sauer?
Is it safe to assume at this point that he’s gone for the rest of the season?
Just seems odd that nothing has been said…Prust sayin’

  50. “Pacioretty is too fragile, never played close to (82) full season games in NHL.”

Slightly harsh, 4ever. He’s played every game this year, only missing three due to suspension. He missed games from getting his neck broken last year (I think Chara would hurt less fragile people on that play) and he was just up and down from the minors before that – no injury record to speak of.

  51. JimboWoodside on

Staal, if he hasn’t even been skating yet, I don’t think there’s any way that he would play again this season, including playoffs…

  52. JimboWoodside on

Yeah, that Chara hit could have left him paralyzed for life – he’s very lucky that he’s still playing.

  53. Carp, I hope so, but I think Caps & Sens are still very much in the picture. I’m keeping my fingers crossed though!

RIP Mega hot Beckham ad. Goodbye, sweet prince!

  54. Beckham’s package is off the board? what’s replacing it? John Scott’s package? (sorry for the nauseating thought in advance guys…)

  55. hopefully they go back to the billboard that was there before Beckham’s package.

Staal, even if he was suddenly symptom free, given that he had a relapse last time, it would probably be weeks before he skated, then weeks before light practice, then weeks before contact and weeks before cleared for playing. So there’s no update, nor should there be.

  56. It is so obvious, that Sauer is not going to play this season. In this case no news are the bad news.

  57. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!

anyone have an MSG link, because you KNOW NHLNetwork will not show anything before they drop the puck

  58. Mama, what a picture of John Scott isnt as gorgeous as David Beckham? lol. is it wrong that im kind of hoping that Pitt wins today (i dont like Buffalo for some reason)..and that Crosby gets Phaneufed?

  59. It actually almost makes you feel sorry for Montreal fans. Not!Than the Lord there was someone stupider than Glen.At least Gainey will go down in history for something.HaHaHA.Wasn’t he the one that always unfairly beat out Jan Erixon for the Selke.

  60. Patrick Division? It hasn’t been called the Patrick Division for almost 20 years, dude. One would think a “sports writer” would know that.
