So here we are, the Rangers on the verge of clinching the Patrick Division and the No. 1 seed in the East, in the hunt for the Presidents’ Trophy in the final week of the season, and who knows what in the playoffs.
And the Montreal Canadiens, that prideful iconic hockey organization, a laughingstock not in the playoff race, a franchise which on Thursday fired its general manager and his predecessor, Habs legend Bob Gainey.
I’m not here to make fun, or make light, of the Canadiens’ plight.
But it sure has been an interesting turn of events since the Rangers’ Glen Sather traded Scott Gomez to then-GM Gainey.
Or, as we here like to sum up the trade: Gomez for Marian Gaborik, Ryan McDonagh, Brandon Prust, Pavel Valentenko and No Gomez.
Which always makes me google this story for a laugh or two.
There are others, I’m sure I’ve seen over the years since the deal. So feel free to link to your own favorites.
Anyway, I’m thinking this might be the column I write for tomorrow, how this trade shaped the fortune of two clubs, especially the one on top, which changed the look of its roster … special thanks to the Canadiens.

Glen Healy???? I doubt he’d even been born then. This was a long long time ago when Emile Francis was the Ramblers goaltender…no mask, and more guts than any player I’ve ever seen. Got hit in the face by a Terry Reardon shot and they carried him off ice. ( no backup goalies then). He came back on the ice a while later with wires coming of of his nose, and his entire face black and blue, and finished the game. Terry Reardon was brother to the great Habs player Kenny Reardon. Emile the Cat was one terrific goaltender. He did splits the way the Ballet Russe does them, and he used his blocker to back up his glove. He used to practice taking shots from his team mates during practice and all he did was deflect the shots with the broad side of his stick, and shot after shot was directed into the upper balcony.It was something to see. I don’t believe that there is a goaltender now who could begin to duplicate what the Cat accomplished.

My initial reaction to the Cally-Boyle-Dubi line was that Torts would send them out against Erik Cole.

Pacioretty is too fragile, never played close to (82) full season games in NHL. Big whiner too. His American origin doesn’t add to hockey club per se. Rightfully, NO. There were and are better choices.

Slightly harsh, 4ever. He’s played every game this year, only missing three due to suspension. He missed games from getting his neck broken last year (I think Chara would hurt less fragile people on that play) and he was just up and down from the minors before that – no injury record to speak of.

Yeah, that Chara hit could have left him paralyzed for life – he’s very lucky that he’s still playing.

Staal, even if he was suddenly symptom free, given that he had a relapse last time, it would probably be weeks before he skated, then weeks before light practice, then weeks before contact and weeks before cleared for playing. So there’s no update, nor should there be.
