It’s Go Time!

Game 68.

Ya boys, on their first three-game (regulation) losing streak of the season … so this is a MUST-WIN! Right? ;)

The Rangers begin a seven-game homestand.

Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal.

Ryan Callahan (foot) and Michael Del Zotto (hip) are out. Brandon Dubinsky (sinus) hopes to return. Mats Zuccarello has been recalled from Connecticut (AHL). He will likely play on the PP (and in the case of a shootout, God forbid).

That would probably mean John Scott and Jeff Woywitka are prucha’d. The Isles have lost four of five.

PS, I will be a first-intermission guest on the radio (ESPN 1050-AM; or on the Rangers’ team site) with Dave Maloney or Kenny Albert. Please give us a listen.

Here’s the official word from the NYR on Zuccarello:

Recall Forward Mats Zuccarello from Connecticut (AHL)

New York, March 11, 2012 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has recalled forward Mats Zuccarello from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Zuccarello, 24, has registered 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points, along with 22 penalty minutes in 37 games with Connecticut this season.  He ranks fourth on the team in points and assists, and is tied for fifth in goals.  He also ranks third on Connecticut with a plus-five rating, and fifth with five power play goals.  Zuccarello has posted nine multi-point efforts, including three, three-point performances.  He recorded an AHL career-high, three assists on November 12 at St. John’s.  Zuccarello also registered a career-high, seven-game point streak from November 26 at Springfield to January 13 at Norfolk, recording five goals and six assists over the span, including four consecutive two-point efforts from December 2 at Providence to December 9 vs. Hershey.

The Oslo, Norway native skated in three games with the Rangers to begin the season.  He was originally signed by the Rangers as a free agent on May 26, 2010.

  1. LGR!! The Fishsticks are going down tonight!

Life is busy on vacation. Slingbox/DVR for me. No updates. See you after the game.

  2. Yeah, *A MUST WIN* and nothing less, lol!
Am I alone, who feel shame when John “Gianome” ask players this silliest questions?

  3. Good evening, Carp!

I’ve got a 6-pack of Genny Cream Ale riding on this game. Kinda gross… but LETS GO RANGERS!!!

  4. Good evening, Hambone! How’s that 1 vs. 8 weekend in Buffalo (and Baby Buffaloes chicken sangwich) looking?

  5. TLIKFN (Zuccarello) looked really funny next to Scott and Rupp in warmups. Like somebody threw a toy on the ice.

  6. $9500 for a Lundqvist jersey? are you kidding me? ooooh Crosby update coming up, everyone turn your tv’s on!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. OK

Let’s all try something different with this game tonight……………………………………..

instead of thinking of them as the rotten Islanders, but merely as ..the opponent of the evening. Don’t think of the Rangers by their names…just their numbers..that will help take the personalization away from the game and allow the viewer to examine not how many things they do wrong so much, but rather how many things they do right.

For instance…Let’s take a number 12 on Rangers, and see what he does with the puck in a given attack mode…..does he pass it? Or shoot it? If so…how well did he accomplish this? Did the pass make sense, or was it a throwaway? Let’s watch the way a Dman handles critters in his goal mouth….what was his number? Did he get firmly physical or just go thru the motions? Watch a player who gives the puck away when he should have retained it ( and in the same category, did he try to pass it a covered ( or checked) opponent, i.e. trying to pass across a lane that had an opponents stick within reach of the pass (, the anatomy of a giveaway? ( what was his number, forget about who he was).?

In other words watch this one game as though you were a scout ( this is precisely how they go about valuating a prospect)…see how you would grade them, and keep a pad, for scoring these numbered and as yet unidentified skaters on Rangers side…forget what the opponent is doing or has done. we’re not interested in how well they play.

Where do they need help in some basics? Pass over their great plays if any, simply accept them as routine
( and to be expected minimum performances that should be accomplished. ) See if it changes your approach to games in the future.

T’wont hurt to give it a try…see how you come out.

  8. Carp, that all depends on whether or not the Rangers season ends tonight, right?

  9. eddie eddie eddie on

fran – over/under on tape to tape passes?

where is boom boom been lately?

  10. Brad Richards positives (according to Joe M) – Richards shoots the puck!

Another positive – Richards knows how to put on skates!

    A M A Z I N G!

  11. The only difference is that Aragorn and Legolas were skilled, ORR. And they saved the world.

  12. I wonder how many times will Rosen and Micheletti tell us what great player John Tavares is.

  13. well it’s a good thing Rupp won the fight the other night because otherwise we havent won a fight in weeks

  14. When you’ve got a player as dynamic as Ruslan Fedotenko, I can understand why you’d never ever cut his ice time

  15. Man, Bickel really got his face beat in earlier. Friggin team never wins a fight anymore

  16. the only thing Bickel won in that fight was eating fists. Lundqvist has not looked sharp….

  17. well, once again we’re d***ing around on the boards while the isles are shooting on the net, crashing the net and getting rebounds

  18. maybe the Ranges should watch film of the isles to see how you’re supposed to take your man and not allow him go and score on your goalie

  19. This swoon reminds me of a great line from the movie Youngblood.

“How did you get so horse carcillo in one day!”

  20. Seriously, when was the last time the Rangers won a fight? Has to be a couple of weeks ago

  21. I don’t care about the game that much. I’m just blessed to get the chance to see John Tavares and his terrific season.

  22. maybe the Rangers are just distracted tonight because they keep reminding themselves
how they’re not supposed to touch cindy on thursday.

  23. Man, when this team doesn’t play hard, their lack of raw skill is painfully revealed. Double for Girardi.

    Hate Parenteau.

  24. Tavares takes a stupid penalty in the offensive zone…. what, no “brilliant play by Tavares” Sam?

  25. When’s the last time the team has won an offensive zone face off to start the PP, December?:)

  26. Lloyd,

It’s served them well, to a large degree. But the pp is not about hard work, it’s about precision and skill. Which is why it sucks for them a lot.

    Now, that was good.

  27. the PA announcer seemed more excited announcing the Islanders goal than he did announcing the Richards goal

  28. eddie eddie eddie on

read all about the rangers first goal…on the PP….only $10…shoot me an email if interested

my email is: “only a moron would pay for my

  29. iDoodie Machetto on

See you guys? PP is fixed. Richards was worth every penny. No regret over not signing Kovalchuk instead.

  30. >>“The move, the penetration, the quick shot…”

And it wasn’t a premature shot either.

  31. i was going to say Carp, where is your criticism now? or did you want him to score 15 in that must-win period?

  32. eddie eddie eddie on

richards interviewd on radio….just gave my $10 insights a shout out…thx Brich

  33. WTB!??! Carp
did you get bumped for Richards?
did you explain to them you have a better shooting percentage and should be playing point on the power play?

  34. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

waiting to hear the soothing tones of Rick Carpiniello on the radio!

  35. Staal Wart and the Overachievers on

Love the coast to coast goals…
    Wish Brian Leetch still played…

  36. The 20th goal of the year for the 60 mil man..let’s rejoice!…ahahaha…(if it was 8 30-goal years, I’d be impressed)
PA Parenteau is still out scoring him this year, enough said.

  37. eddie eddie eddie on

panic on the streets of london, panic on the streets of birmingham, i wonder to myself…..

  38. Wow, Orr, you knew it was just a matter of time, though. That’s what happens when we trade our depth:)
    Rangers in 7!

  39. eddie eddie eddie on

great interview carp…….you were well prepared as a result of reading my $10 insights…GREAT WORK

  40. great interview Carp
but i’m surprised that you didn’t saying that
those who are in panic mode are full of

  41. eddie eddie eddie on

carp – these guys all mention your blog…ya think they read as well?…anybody of note post as well?

  42. Oh and hey, Dubi! Good to see you back and breathing. :P

And Frodo!! Is Scott or Rupp Samwise though?

  43. i got it eddie
    wasn’t home last night
    didn’t see it til today
and then off to spaghetti dinner
    i’ll get back to you
    don’t worry!!

  44. WTB?!?!?! no blood but a 4 minute.

if the refs are this bad tonight
then i’m going to put myself in a self-induced coma
    on thursday

  45. Tiki XLII XLVI on

This is a very important game. I dont like throwing out must win unless it is a must win. Each game is equally important because they all count the same, but this is very important for the team psyche.

If we’re gonna get 4 minutes, you might as well have decapitated him.

  46. “60.3 Double-minor Penalty – When a player carries or holds any part of his stick above the shoulders of the opponent so that injury results, the Referee shall assess a double-minor penalty for all contact that causes an injury, whether accidental or careless, in the opinion of the Referee.”

    What constitutes “injury” then?

  47. hey Carp
if you wanna play a joke on a newbie in the pressroom
encourage him/her to ask Torts after the game about this 4 minute call

  48. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

jpg, you are banned from Facebook, the blog AND from viewing or listening to the game on THursday is ANY WAY SHAPE OR FASHION!!

  49. The Islanders could have a two minute 5-on-3, Carp. But the choice goes to Jobathan Toews and Joel Quenneville.

  50. i wonder if Torts should have called a timeout after the goal
cause we looked a little down for a bit there

also hoping the Stepan will make up for matters and play a little Stiffer the rest of the game.

  51. blame stepan for losing the face off that led to his penalty then blame staal for the misclear for the fluke goal to occur.

  52. eddie3

    just about every sunday.
mom’s not such a pasta person but she makes it for the rest of us.

i’m the biggest Pasta-head in the familia

  53. tavares up as soon as the call is made?!?!?
    shouldn’t he get an unsportsmanlike?

this is becoming a dress rehearsal for thursday.

  54. How’d the Knicks do today?

Guess J.Lin is going to have to have a few more good games before they put him in the Hall.

  55. yesss when you cant blame Richards, blame Gaborik!!!! because everyone else is playing a masterful game. and gaborik is supposed to score 82 games a year 160 goals in total.

  56. Not sure that was a penalty for the hit on John Tavares after that John Tavares chance, but I’m glad John Tavares is OK, so I can enjoy some more of John Tavares on this PP.

  57. Stranger Nation on

Moulson with his personalized spot next to crease. Would somebody DECK this guy!

  58. By FAR, the best Rangers play of the game so far…..Stepan putting the puck into space where Hagelin can catch up to it and get a good shot.

  59. my mom doesn’t seem to go by particular days
just when she feels like it which could mean
several days of pasta nights each week

  60. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

That should be a 10 minute penalty, it was a bigger stick

  61. BANJ

    that kid in that commercial
i want to smash that guitar and stick him like he’s a vampire terrorizing the neighborhood

  62. How is that only 2? Because the refs only apply the official rules when they work against the Rangers?

  64. instead of SHOOOOT

    hey! we scored again!
    Richards scored again!!!

and i’m sorry but Hank should stop that!!

  66. im so sick and tired of the extra freaking pass shoot the damn puck.

at least 5 times this year a guy out of the box scores

  67. Henrik’s been bad lately, I agree. This like the seventh game in a row where we’ve allowed 3 goals; a collective fail by the team.

  68. Carp still thinking Lundqvist has looked good tonight? or is it all on Richards again? he shouldve sprinted from the bench and stopped Mcdonald on the breakaway.

  69. yes i know he was hung out to dry by Double Stupidity — too many passes and no one being aware that penalty was ending and moving back in a defensive position —
    but C’MON!!!!!!!
he sure is losing Vezina points with these past few games

and i’m not saying it would be easy but he just needs to stop that!

  70. Tiki XLII XLVI on

Im really disappointed in SHenrik tonight. I was looking to him to be a stopper, and stop this losing streak, and he looks awful.

  71. i think Lev is being sarcastic and saying that maybe Richards should have left the bench
and stopped the islander from scoring since Hank didn’t

  72. Czechthemout!!! on

Amazing how they have no clue on offense. Pass when they should shoot. Shoot when they should pass. They just don’t have enough offense and that is why they will at best maybe win a round.

  73. ThisYearsModel on

Hank has come back to earth. The Vezina is slipping through his fingers again. It will end up in nashville.

  74. Does it really matter if he wins the Vezina or not? Just take this team to at least the conference finals this year.

  75. hagelin coulda had 3 goals by now. and henrik cant stop a beachball. i know its a breakaway but damn its 3 or more every game now with him. he just cant put a full consistent season together.ithought this year was it for him. hope he gts his stuff together after this 4th straight loss

  76. Sally

i don’t care if the Ranger looks like the spawn of Mike RIcci and Rob Brindamour
as long as he helps us score more than the other team or stop the other team from
    scoring more than us.

  77. What the hell is wrong with this team? How do you go from being the best team in the NHL to playing worse than the Blue Jackets?

  78. Rollin Dubious on

We are starting too look like buffalo with all these hobbits in the lineup. Carl hags just had elevensy.

  79. hes not winning the vezina. rinne is. and he shouldnt care about that anyway. he needs to worry about stopping the next shot. he looks terrible

  80. Wow. they are running into some bad luck right now and Henrik is swooning..

the 2nd Islander goal was a friggin joke. btw 4 minutes no blood because they can percieve he got whacked hard????REALLY

gaborik did not shoot the puck but tried another cutey move and boom Mcdonald in the net…

shoot the F—in puck……hagelin instead of passing to richards how about shooting the friggin puck.

right now rangers cannot get a break….

  81. JimboWooside on

So far, the yearly daylight-savings-time spring swoon looks to be holding serve – no matter what they do, some unexpected occurrence (this time, another stanchion!) costs us dearly.

44 years of Ranger-fandom has left me the ultimate pessimist.

  82. McDonagh, Girardi and Lundqvist have all been pretty bad lately (well for their standards)…

At least Zuccarello has made a positive impact on the PP although its not like he will be on the top unit for much longer…

  83. This is a difference – any normally skilled, not offensively challenged team, will have already 5:2 based on 99% scoring chances. Instead an opposition have a luxury to score flukes AND any legit opportunities, hence 2:3. Want to kill somebody…Finish, guys, what started with Parenteau, but without 4 min.

  84. prust slashed in their dreams. that is a joke if prust got 2 for that play.

these refs again make it up as they go along.

Paranteau got 4 minutes because he acted like he got hurt, btw he was back in about 4 minutes.

ref’s are friggin morons….Carp can you dispute these calls?????????????

  85. i think Hags was stupidly trying to be nice and get Richards the hat trick.
Brad did have a wide open net but too many bodies in the way of the pass.
it’s not like Hags is Artie or Brad

  86. Carp, what jpg said. Rinne is definitely in the lead for the Vezina, and all the little talk of Hank for MVP should be gone now.

  87. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

    Mickey, 2 ppgs today! LMAO

Now Hank needs to wallqvist the rest of the damned game/season or Pekka is gonna be heisting the Vezina from him!

  88. LW,

I don’t think any of us are citing the breakaway as the sole reason for Henrik’s poor play. I don’t think anybody said he has to stop clear breakaways, I think we’re saying he should have stopped that one. He’s looked shaky overall.

  89. if a loss to the sorry-ass Isles does not raise panic at this point, I don’t know what will…

  90. well yeah Grabby

Rinne right now would (probably) have stopped that
Hank prior to allstar break probably would have stopped that

right now i don’t know what his deal is but it’s not helping

  91. prust got 2 for slashing. seriously refs call penalties when they do not even see anything.

that was a asumption call. PRUST did nothing wrong.

    what a joke………

  92. Linda, im not so sure Rinne wasnt going to get the Vezina even if Hank didnt have these pretty bad last 3-4 games….but now it’s a no-brainer.

  93. LW
it’s something that a Vezina contending goalie who is the last line of defense
NEEDS to make in that situation

it’s what other Vezina contending goalies have done and its what Hank did earlier in the season

  94. eddie eddie eddie on

panic in the streets of london, panic in the streets of birmingham, i wonder to myself….

  95. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

Pinne made 2 saves last night and i just turned to the man and said, this guy is freakin amazing tonight…

  96. hello 6th seed and a trip to washington for 3rd time in 4 years. lose in 5 see you all in october

  97. Stop blaming Hank – he is not a God, just a King…
This game is insult to injury, because I believe, except admittedly much to be desired finishing, it is one of the best offensive game team played recently, IMHO.

  98. anyone see Nail Yakupov get hit in the head today? possible concussion. Blue Jackets must be pretty upset at the moment

  99. So nobody said he should stop every clear breakaway, Latona, but he should’ve stopped _that_ particular clear breakaway? Why?

Not arguing his play hasn’t slipped (but barely – people are equating wins/losses to goalie performance way too much).

  100. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

oh and an FYI for you guys who travel for games. If you ever go to Nashville and you have served (or ARE serving) in the military, make sure you bring your VA id or your military id. Ask at the ticket window if they do a military discount. We went to get tickets yesterday and 2 tix were going to cost $200. I said ‘wow i can’t do that’ so the lady looks at the man, asks if he was in the military.. he shows her his VA id card and we got the tickets for $90. Then he saved me 20% off in the team store.

  101. let just hope after we blow this one we finally wake up and startplaying good team game again

  102. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

have a good spring summer and early fall eric! take a nice trip somewhere, stop and smell the flowers ;-)

  103. eddie eddie eddie on

linda – I will only charge you $8 for viewing my insights on “all things Rangers” once i see your ID

  104. jpg

With respect, that’s exactly what I mean by a ridiculous standard. Can’t pretend I’ve seen every Nashville game (maybe 99% of them…), but I’d wager that Rinne has conceded a breakaway goal or two. Maybe even one in a tied game.

  105. Hags being surprised that he had room to go to the net is
a VERY BAD SIGN that this team doesn’t even THINK of going to the net as a

  106. lmao the isles jus gave haglin a free shot and he didnt know what to do. kidsa little lost out there. quick feet, slow brain

  107. I thought he dropped a bit there, LW. McDonald picked the resultant opening and scored. His stance usually appears higher to me.

  108. goal

Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!

  109. A Vezina candidate like Nabokov should be stopping those heavily screened shots that are tipped right in front of goal.

  110. Game is not over, season…
BRich playing tonight like a REAL star finaly. problem – a little bit smarter than partners

  111. ok LW i’ll give you that i haven’t seen every nashville game
but i have seen rinne act Vezina like
and even saw the flames goalie stop such shots.

and this was something that Hank was doing better in the past.
it’s just something that you have to count on from your ALLSTAR goalie
he may not do 100% of the time but there are certain situations when he just HAS to.

  112. all those games of giardi playing 30 mins has cost up. half the player he was earlier. looks lost in some shifts

  122. duckbill…yes…hopefully i wont have to say too many too many toomanymen penalties. too many too many’s?

  123. turned on the devils/flyers game and the first words I hear is chico saying none of the 4 goals were brabowski’s fault, LOL.

  124. Carp, Bobrovsky is in for the Flyers. so if losing 4-1 to the Devils with your backup is considered being spanked…what is losing 4-1 to Ottawa considered?

  125. WE GOT A POINT!!!!

    Wo-oh oh!!! Lets Go Rangers!!!

  134. Great win! LETS GO RANGERS! Won some Genny Cream Ale! Ew!

Carp, better get ready for that Buffalo baby buffalo sangwich!

  135. Olga Folkyerself on

You should get a free roll of toilet paper with that Genny Cream Ale, Sally.

  136. say what you will about the insignificance of the Scott trade and his playing time, but this team isn’t successful if they play like something out of Slapshot. Keep the bullying, goon b.s. for teams that are trying to protect superstars, and just stick to the grinding style with guys who can actually play the game.

  137. Great game! What a nice, almost forgotten feeling….
Can we ask BRich, politely, to play like that EVERY game, or it is too much?

  138. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

It’s the Miracle of March 11, 3 ppgs in one game

  139. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

    >>>get me a cardiologist im 33 i feel like im 73

Eric, I’m a lot closer to 73 than you are – and I don’t know how much more of this I can take!

  142. funny how Zuccarello, who’s about 5’5″, is a stronger presence in front of the net than Boyle.

  143. *Every* game from now on is a must game – do you think the Pens are saying that every game they’ve been playing hasn’t been a must game in their last 9?

  144. A goal and an assist not enough for you? that and winning offensive zone PP face-offs?

  145. No, it just 99% of BRich tooth are big, bigger than Bickel bickels, which is a lot to say…

  146. Linda:

Sorry, I missed that one. I’m sure someone will sing Boyle’s praises for his once-per-month effort in front of the net tonight, but the fact remains the guy is 6 foot-one-hundred and plays like Sherry Ross.

  147. this win tonight is huge because it drastically lessens the importance of the Pittsburgh game. even if the Rangers can only eek out a point on Tuesday (against a team they should absolutely beat) and lose to Crapsburgh outright on Thursday they’ll be 3 points up.

  148. They have called this day The Eleventh of March! And whom-so-ever of you gets through this day, unless you are shot in the head or somehow slain… you will stand at tiptoe… when e’er you hear the name again, and you will get excited!…At the name March The Eleventh! We happy few, we few, we band of brothers…our names will be as like…household names. And those who are not here, be they sleeping or… doing something else… They will feel themselves…sort of crappy. Because they are not here to…to join the fight. On this day, the Eleventh of March!!

  149. Amazing – EC scored 2 goals today and LA gamble good on Jeff Carter – he scores practically every game for them

  150. on Gabby’s goal, how did puck get into the net?
saw the replay and thought it was over nabakov’s right shoulder but
then i reconsidered it was over left shoulder.

    anyone see it?

    just curious.

  151. omg Erik Christensen did score 2 goals

    and like 2 minutes apart

can we get him back? maybe Minnesota wants John Scott to load equipment onto the team bus.

  152. Stanger Nation Now that’s freken funny

Anyone check to see the last time we easily won a game? Let’s hope that it happens on Tuesday with Chad’s Johnson in net. Our other two goalies can’t seem to get up for games.

  156. will do Linda

    good night all.
as long as a storm doesn’t show up
and mess with my head again
i’m going to sleep well tonight!!!

  157. LLoyd Braunn Spot on Lloyd – since we won a not “Must Win” game tonite it isn’t essential that we win all points on tues and Thurs is my logic in line with this good theatre. Also nice research on Christensen. He’s doing well since he left us. Maybe his new coach like him.

A much needed win. Should have had more on the score sheet but its good enough.
Hagelin was outstanding tonight. The only thing he didn’t do was score. It’s amazing the no matter what line he is on, that line is usually the best line of the night. Richards was great tonight as was Gabby.

  159. Christensen didn’t have a point since that first game he was put back into the lineup after Tortorella made up some b.s. to scratch Avery and went something like 16 straight without a point since he joined Minnesota.

That said, his performance tonight equaled Fedotenko’s goal tally since February

  160. Linda,

you’re go people btw. pretty sure I’ve already said that but I’m drunk and pretty pumped about this win.

you’re very kind Lloyd! bask in the victory, it’s the start of a nice win streak my friend!

  162. dunno about that but like most of my pessimism about this team is that I simply refuse to buy in because I know as soon as I do, they’ll tank and break my heart like they have in the past.

I mean, I take my teams pretty seriously. I still haven’t fully recovered from the Chad Pennington meltdown against the Raiders in 2002.

  163. Chad’s undoing was the most crushed I’ve been by anything sports-related in my life. I was so heavily invested in the Jets that season, and after they gave the Colts a total drubbing a week prior, I thought for sure they’d go to the Super Bowl. Then Broadway Chad couldn’t complete a pass over 6 yards.

  164. Thank you for reportage, Olga and congratulation with one point. It’s make it 3 for today for your beloved teams. Not bad.
(I know, I know it’s not right English, just looks like, but close…).
BTW, seriously,I was watching closely and rooted for Chicago.
