It’s Go Time!

Game 59.

Ya boys have lost two of their last three. They are 3-1 against the Islanders this season.

The Rangers open another back-to-back set, with Buffalo at MSG tomorrow.

Martin Biron, ex-Islander, starts in goal. Ruslan Fedotenko returns from his unannounced (most likely concussion) injury. Stu Bickel returns to defense, and Steve Eminger is prucha’d along with Wojtek Wolski and Jeff Woywitka.

Evgeni Nabokov (flu) returns for the Islanders, who have lost three of their last four.

I’m going to be a first-intermission guest with Kenny Albert and/or Dave Maloney on 1050-AM. Give us a listen.

  1. Sather's Wrap-Up on

Well, Hello Ranger Fans- here we are once again in the Mausoleum, the World’s Most Gamey Arena. While we’re waiting for this game to start, I wanted to give you a peek at what goes on at the trade deadline, and how we make all those important decisions regarding the Rangers.

Uncle Glennie: Come on Howson. You know I want Nash but you’re breaking my balls man. Del Zotto? You’re breaking my balls here. You’ll be making a Nashty mistake. McDonagh? No Way. Breakin’ my Balls, man. Kreider? Brakin’ m’ballz…

(Noo Yoke Nicks….Go Noo Yoke, Go, Nooooooooooooooooo Yoooooooooke) Oh that’s Dolans new ringtone, I better get this… Yes Big Guy! This is Glen… (annoyed) Yeah, I heard about Lin. Who hasn’t? Yeah… Linsanity. Very clever. What did you want?
Yep, I’m working on Nash but there’s an endless argument here and on the blogs about whether to get him or not. Yeah, Nash-derbating, I call it…
No, Nashsanity doesn’t make any sense. What if he doesn’t work out in NY? They’d be calling him a Nash-hole. (Click)

Muckler: I’d like to see a line of CheeChoo, Ruutu and Tootoo.
Uncle Glennie: (aside to Messier) see what I told you about substance abuse? Listen to him now… just baby talk.

Uncle Glennie: Muck! Hey, Muckler! Get Dave Maloney in here.
Dave Maloney: Yes,Glen? What do you want?
Uncle Glennie: You get on that phone and talk to that idiot brother of yours and get us a do-over on the Korpikoski deal. And don’t take no for an answer. Or you’ll be broadcasting Ranger games from the smallest stall in the smallest men’s room in MSG.

Uncle Glennie: Say! What ever happened to Brashear?
Messier: Last I saw him; he was a bouncer at Warren’s.
Torts: Yeah, He threw me all the way across the street…
Messier: (smiling) I saw Avery lookin’ out the window.

Uncle Glennie: Hey! I only made that one mistake in my entire career as GM.
Messier: What do you mean, trading Gretzky?
    Uncle Glennie: Alright two mistakes…
    Torts: Getting Lindros?
Uncle Glennie: That was Lion For A Day. Doesn’t count…
    Muckler: Hiring Trottier as coach?
Uncle Glennie: (annoyed) Everybody just shut the hell up! I forgot what I was going to say. Now where was I?

Keenan: Well here I am guys. Sorry I’m late.
Uncle Glennie: You’re just like a freaking blister Mike. You show up after the work is done.

Uncle Glennie: Well Ranger Fans, that’s how it goes around here sometimes. It’s never easy, there are always critics complaining about what we do, especially in the press.

And speaking of that, Hey! Carpinello! You better sit on that zoo Ranger Report blog of yours over there. Some of those people need to get a life. LinChangesName, ORR, Jimbo, ilb… on there ALL the time. Don’t they have something to do? And you better get rid of that Slatsko and all those other degenerates that post there. Starting to get on my freaking nerves…

    Forever Yours (Every blessed minute)
    Uncle Glennie

    hartnell….yes, I did….nutter butters.

    Fug, butter butters…LOL….I’m an asshat…

    Sather!!! Just like Uncle Glen!

  4. Orr, that’s why Sather should really emphasize *Beer* in his name. Carter might personally charter a flight to get him to Hollywood.

  5. Tiki XLII XLVI on

I think about you often. I miss your sense of humor! I must see u at the next ilb boneheadfest!

  6. Uncle Glennie has been doing much better these past 5 years. Makes me wonder what exactly is he smoking in those stogies :-).

  11. I get the Isles broadcast. Which is both good and bad- good cause I love Howie, but awful cause of Butch

  12. Tiki XLII XLVI on

Joe Micheletti just said that Gaborik is still skating. Wow, I thought that all this time, Gaborik was running on the ice. They use skates in hockey?

  13. i just watched a 20 minute segment on youtube about the lokomotiv plane crash, with interviews from Ruslan Salei’s widow, and KHL officials….really heart-breaking. ill post the link tomorrow for it not to get lost in this game thread…oh ye and they mentioned Cherepanov and his death…just heartbreaking.

GO RANGERSSSSS lets go go gog ogog ogo go go go go!!!!

    lets go Rangers

    Lets go Rangers!!!!

    RANGERS !!!

  15. Sooooooo…Does anybody know Brown’s cap hit? Would Dubi and a first rounder get him? I would be way more excited seeing brown come in than I would Nash. I know Nash will bring the goal scoring we need but to add another Callahan to go into the playoffs would be pretty rad.

  16. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

lmao Mickey, it’s odd to be both at the same time, but he pulls it off.

Hey, I should know in a few days if Nashvegas is doable, are you still up for it?

  17. Jurcina’s dump in just made me recall when Alfredsson shot it at Niedermayer with a second or so to go in one of the periods of the Stanley Cup Finals. That was great!

  18. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

    FIRE SATHER!!! {{{{{{OLGA}}}}}}

holy crap, they let level five score…….. disgusting

  19. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

ok, since you guys have always been generous with your thoughts and prayers, there are a few issues i’d appreciate if you could send good vibes for:

Found out Wednesday night that next wednesday my daughter will be having a biopsy to see if she has cancer. Then, yesterday, she was tboned by a 70 something year old asshat, (‘the sun was in my eyes) and now has a dislocated kneecap and 3 torn ligaments.

Thanks for always being helpful with stuff like this.

  20. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " The MONSTER NASH!!!"...says Greg L. on

OVIOUSLY all this trade talk is hampering our team. They just dont play the same. Well when Biron is in net but it can’t be just him ? Can it? The Rangers lost something and im thinkin it all this trade crap. WE NEED to get monday here ….now!!!!!

  21. Tiki, said the same thing to myself. Oh, Joe.

This team needs Biron and Gabby to look like they did before the ASG.

  22. i see Sam and Joe are pickign up right where they left off in the last game….i think they forgot that they are RANGERS announcers.

  23. Nice pick by the linesman on Richards after the faceoff to let MacDonald get free for the chance just before Moulson scored.

  24. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " The MONSTER NASH!!!"...says Greg L. on

LINDA , thats alot happin to one girl!!! She is one tough girl . BIG HUGS LINDA!!! Huge prayers for your daughter XOXOXO!!!!

  25. reginald dunlop on

Hard Work plu talent beats har work alone everytime…..NOT eNOUGH talent on the roster………in february march april…….all teams tighten up and play the same grinding game as rangers used to………..just realistic……girardi very average….worn out……….maybe all worn out………..

  26. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

    thanks Mickey and Gregsta!!

Freakin papsmear, Ranger killer. That’ll be Dubinsky if he’s traded.

  27. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

Thanks Lev. it’s time for them to just put their house on flatbed and move the hell out of MA. And Tiki, I will check and see if it was Tom Brady’s dad who hit her ;-)

  28. It’s rest for Hank in a game with no standings implications. Still want the W but Biron hasn’t been good of late.

  29. Can blame Biron, he hasn’t looked good. But some pretty crappy play going on in front of him, too.

    Good thing this isn’t a must-win.

  30. they announced Richards as the goal scorer (so horrible incorrect lol) so yes his name was mentioned

  31. lmao, Miami.

ps, brutal internet connection here … so I’m not ignoring you guys.

Fla, they just mentioned Richards name on the goal announcement … then they realized it was Staal’s.

  32. lol yes you did Mickey. that’s the sole good memory of AJ Burnett Ill have…he got that sound fairly often..

  33. “ORR!! What Is It Good For?!?! February 24th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Definitely trade stahl but keep Marc Staal :-)

  34. when is nash coming i cant look at dubi anymore. keep kreider and del zaster and mac out of the deal and lets get it done

  35. for those who have center ice package habs/caps game on tsn feed they have insider trading coming up in a few at end of 1st per

    dreger mckenzie lebrun

  36. Onecupin72yearsandcounting on

I think Biron time has come and gone..
I know the job market sucks but I wish Sam and Joe would critique the rangers just a bit more, instead of canonizing .
If gaborik and stepan were in the NFL their uniforms would always be white .

  37. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

lmao, i am just laughing at the comments on the avery article on the post. seriously?

  38. “Rick Carpiniello coming up on 1050 ESPN Radio…”

its a shame noone will be able to listen…

  39. “lmao, i am just laughing at the comments on the avery article on the post. seriously?”

It is some pretty funny stuff. He’s the savior of the team it seems. “Why is this mean spirited Tortorella doing this to him.” Just great. The Avery fan club still hasn’t moved on.

  40. Thanks for reaffirming what I’d though I’d heard, LW.

Wasn’t Yanic Perreault a face-off specialist? We should get him!

  41. nothing new from tsn guys that we didnt already know.

nabokov to leafs if isles and him are far apart on contract talks by monday

  42. NYR_FAN

i got it i just hate 1050. You would think with all that money they would be able to buy off those little local stations thats cut in…

  43. i get MSG so i never have a reason to use a stream but sometimes im on the road and its impossible to get a signal. No excuse considering i’m not even 30 miles away…

  44. “Oh look, the second period started. I’d flipped to FOOD.”

An excuse heard for many an early second period goal conceded in New Jersey over the years.

  45. Penalty to #4, Michael Del Zotto, 2 minutes for double-sticking. This kid’s brain seriously shuts off sometimes.

  46. You can’t “pass” a stick to a teammate. Dumb move by Del Zaster, and by Boyle, who called for him to pass the stick back to him.

  47. I remember Captain Clutch getting called for that once. Tossing the stick to somebody like a moron.

  48. if u remmeber after the lockout the rangers led all year lost 9 of 10 to end the season the devs won the final 8 and won div on last day.

3 days later jagr goes to throw elbow at gomez and seperates his shoulder we lose game 1 6-1.

weekes starts game 2 over hank and the rest was history

why do i feel this way

  49. Jlone2Bubblehead on

dammit, my subscription to Center Ice isnt working tonight. anyone have a link to a feed to the game?

  50. Anyone else on the Islanders broadcast? Even I know that stupid helping with the stick rule and they’re just puzzled.

  51. im not really sure how you can defend Biron after tonight’s game. we all give a lot of carcillo to the Islanders so that means Biron is expected to beat them….as im typing this he makes a nice save lol

  52. Understand it’s a penalty, but an Islander would’ve been free to knock the stick out of the zone without getting a penalty, provided Boyle wasn’t trying to retrieve it at the time.

Anyway, I thought the Rangers got the option for Boyle to play with no stick for four minutes or two sticks for two minutes?

  53. im just very adamant about us hangin on to div and not being in the 4 vs 5 matchup vs a div rival.

wont be good for long term playoff success

  54. How many people?
    1) have ever seen that called
    2) knew the rule , (I didn’t- handing the stick- yeah, didn’t know pushing it on the ice was a penalty)

  55. eric, first of all, they’re not going into a tailspin. And if they do, they’ll come right out of it pretty soon.

Second, they could end up facing any team in the East whether they finish first or fourth or eighth.
    It won’t matter.

  56. DD, I was at a game where something like that was called. A few years ago vs Philly. Drury tossed the stick to someone and got called. Ryan Hollweg scored twice in the game. Pretty rare events all around.

  57. carp

but if they finish 1st or 2nd in conf they prob get a combination of ottawa toronto florida wash or winnipeg

better then potential playing devs pens flyers if they dont win div

  58. Am I allowed to point out that Dubinsky is playing a really good game and could very easily have 2 assists or does that mean we need to rehash the 6 goal thing for an hour?

  59. eric, but anybody could still finish 7-8, too. And the 7 or 8 might be the hottest team in hockey at that point. It doesn’t matter.

    But I don’t think they’ll fall down.

  60. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

this is the message my daughter sent me on FB

you cant even be mad…. you know how bad I need this hahaha

as i finished reading it STEPAN scored. she hasn’t said a word since lol

  61. Linda,

Hoping you, your daughter, and the entirety of your family can discover some peace and have good tidings delivered unto you in this difficult time.

  62. I told other Ranger friends…the fishies may s..k…but don’t underestimate them against us….sigh.

  63. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

they actually have a banner outside that cave with Level Five under the word COMMITTMENT?
    that’s scary

  64. This whole game just makes me laugh. Wish I checked in earlier and knew about Carp’s radio appearance. Gonna listen to Gross if it doesn’t overlap with Henrik.

  65. Stralman is having a bad day at the office. The funny thing is I read the other night on the Bluejackets blog how surprised they were how well Stralman has played under torts, Oh well.

  66. No need for thanks, Lin. You know what? I bestow upon you 400 lunch points for your great service to this blog and your family. Hope that makes things a little better!

  67. Slatsko Folkyerself on

New York Rangers traded Rem Murray, Tomas Kloucek and Marek Zidlicky to the Nashville Predators for Mike Dunham.

    Good one, Glen…

  68. Mister D- You don’t know hockey (or math), Dubi has 6 goals in over 2 thirds of the season, so it’s impossible for him to score more than 3 goals the rest of the year. :P

  69. lw

there 7 back and there is 24 games left we play 3 times. come on not fair to say rangers clinch anything yet. listen i know i am negative but there is plenty of time to be caught.

  70. HageLinMcCalPruBoylahan on

Rollin.. stole the letters right off my fingers! I bet she sings the Anthem before a playoff game

  71. I thought the singer was Chris Simon.

I know, Eric. But you did have the Devils passing the Rangers a couple of weeks ago too…

  72. And they sound real good doing everlong, until she opens her trap. Just my opinion.

Did I hear bill pee-dough refer to him as Steve Nash twice tonight

  73. what an awful trade by the Devils. Zidlicky is barely better than Foster and they give up Palmieri a decent prospect and a 2nd rounder plus the 3rd if they sign him. the other dude is a career minor leaguer…

  74. why always shoot the into the corners? Why not shoot on goal? Even if goalie stops it, it will be a faceoff in offensive zone.

  75. i would limit stralman rest of the game. every shift he looks lost tonight. worse game as a ranger.

  76. Coors Light sucks but my fridge sucks less when I get them out. Stupid guests not drinking their stupid beer …

  77. Tiki XLII XLVI on

If we could just win this game and have that other team from that other city that shall not be named lose, that’d be huge!

  78. Just got home from conducting a church tour – was listening to the radio coverage while traveling.

Good Lord in heaven, why Biron again? I know a rough stretch is coming in the schedule, but we need our #1 guy in net against these guys! They are all out for Ranger blood, *every time we play them!*

  79. Shouldn’t the Rangers had the choice if they shud be down 1 man for 2 mins or 4 on 4 for 2 mins?

  80. No way Shanahan is suspending anybody … $2500 fine.

First hint of an altercation in the stands. No real fight, and of course a guy in a Dubinsky shirt was ejected.

  81. Rolston couldnt see that the puck was outside the zone from 1 foot away while we could clearly see it on tv

  82. My dear god. If anyone wants to rewind their DVR and confirm, Richards did everything he could to hold up so he didn’t have to make contact along the boards in our zone.

  83. I don’t just want a point against these guys….oh dear. And shut up me. I am no NN…….but byfuglien!! Really!

  84. There are days when I wish I didn’t care about this stuff…..this is one, and there is so much season left….oh help me…..good Adam Gravey….!!!!

  85. Tiki XLII XLVI on

All Boyle has to do is keep picturing Tummy Brady on his ass as he gets pounded by Justin Tuck and the Giants in his last 2 Super Bowls. That oughta fire him up!

  86. Tiki XLII XLVI on

Why is Jon Mitchell shooting when you could have Anisimov, Hagelin, actual skillful players?

  87. Really John Mitchell? Really. Oh well I’m happy with the point, we skated our backup and held in there.

  88. Tortorella needs to not let Brad Richards shoot in the shootout ever again. Even though that should have happened after the third miss or so.

  89. Torts should put Dubi out there for the SO – he could have sealed his fate in the Red, white & blue….

  90. Last two Ranger shooters 0-10 this season (now 12). WOOT? Choose people that score, don’t go with hunches.

  91. Maybe with a #1 goalie in nets, we don’t need to come from behind – 2 goals on the first 4 shots on goal? Is that major league goaltending?

  92. well if Lundqvist is in goal we probably win but luckily we have a big enough lead where we can sacrifice some points to keep Hank fresh…

  93. Jimbo,

The first one was a result of poor coverage, but perhaps Henrik would have had it; I don’t want to fault him on the opening tally. The second goal he needed to have.

  94. You know, it isn’t being an NN to speak the truth – bottom-dwellers and pond scum teams are beating us lately. Not the Penguins, but the others…?

  95. Thanks for that, Latona – I was not able to watch, and Kenny & Dave didn’t fault Biron for either of those 2 goals.

  96. richards is 0 for 8 in the shootout… cally is not good in the shootout and john mitchell!!!

jeez, good news no shootout in the playoffs.

did not see the whole game …..

  97. czechthemout!!!! on

Three losses in four games with only an ot win against the armpit of the league.
Nothing to see here. There are no problems or issues. Move along.

  98. And WTB was going on with our defense? They made it sound like our defense was playing the Gretzy-Kurri-Tikkanen line when that Pre-K Parenteau’s line was on the ice..

  99. I wish they would just throw Stralman out there on the first shot and have him fire a slapper.. wouldn’t change much, all things considered, and at least it would be entertaining!

  100. “ORR!! What Is It Good For?!?! February 24th, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Tomg, maybe he sucks in the shootout”

I understand but it can be any worse than what I’ve seen.

  101. At the very very least, Zuccarello would help in the shootout…and he’s improved his game since last season…

Hopefully Torts gets a call from Hartford…

  102. Teams slump. The fuggin Wings lost, what, seven in a row, at some point this season? No cause for concern. It happens. At least we picked up a point.

Richards looks pathetic. The guy needs to take his head out of his ass and do something. Fuggin guy can’t even score a shootout goal, at the very least. Useless.

  103. We have one more game with the Piles this season, I think – and I’m wishing for a long, hard summer of rehabilitation for Parenteau and Moulson after that game…

  104. I expected to lose in regulation tonight so I’ll gladly take the point especially with Boston and NJ both losing tonight…

  105. Bettman Bonus Point is perfectly acceptable tonight, this looked like it could be the CHI game all over again and it wasn’t.

  106. Maybe we can rent Hartnell for that last game to dislocate a few Isles knees. He won’t get any grief from the league office for it..

  107. What did I say? After being dominated by Pissies in their, probably, the worst season game, Rangers *needed* this win to inferior team, to get back their “mojo” and winning self-esteem; that’s why I said it is a *must* win. Now, collective psychology has its own domino effect transforming usually to the losing streaks. Will see tomorrow…Hope I’m wrong. BTW, Biron was OK, it’s just silly to blame him.

  108. Well, in my mind, our team didn’t come into the game prepared to play, much like in the Chicago debacle – why is that?

  109. Jimbo,
depends on what KIND of shots. What make you feel that Hank or anyone else could make a save on 3 ft. blank shot? C’mon.

  110. The Rangers might be the better team but Tavares is an incredible player and Moulsen is terrific in front of the net.

If they knew how to draft they’d be some team…

  111. Say the Isles slip in to the tournament in April….Do you guys think the Rangers could beat these Isles in a 7 game series? I have serious doubts…

  112. I don’t know, 4ever – I was traveling when the game started, so I *still* have not seen those first 2 goals – maybe I’m completely off base with my criticism, but in the Chicago game, then this one – blitzed early, tough to come back from that kind of start.

  113. I’m sorry – but these are points that we should not be giving away.

Who is responsible for reminding the players, “You know, guys – every time we play these guys it’s like a Cup Final game for them – they love nothing in this world more than beating us – so be aware, from the first puck drop, that they’re gonna be in your face, and look to embarrass you – play accordingly!

  114. NYR_FAN

PAP is a product of playing with two all-star players. If he is stupid enough to leave the Islanders you will see a huge drop off in assists. He is a good player and all but most of his success comes from being in the perfect spot for him…

  115. all I know if Lundqvist was in goal the rangers win this game 3-2 and maybe 3-1. The islanders are playing for there playoff lives while the rangers are 7 points ahead in the conference. Forget about winning the president cup because that means nothing. Look up the last team who won the cup when winning the president cup. People need to calm down and come down to earth.

  116. im kind of tired of hearing the players say “ye it’s good to be in first place and have teams chasing you.” teams have been showing up and playing their hearts out against us and we talk the talk of having good starts and such but where is it? it’s been missing ever since the boston game I think.

  117. stevezipay Torts says he’s happy to grab a point, but says Rangers were “sloppy”

who’s better expert on “sloppy” than Avery?! CALL HIM UP!

  118. Olga Folkyerself on

“Forget about winning the president cup because that means nothing.”

It came in handy in 1994. Game 7 at home.
    Just Sayin’.

  119. Tomg,
whatever motivation or lack thereof you’re talking about, fact is that Rangers out shoot, outworked, and “outspirited” Isles in this game. Again, defense mistakes and our “snipers” inability to finish, cost us this game. No reason to try unwarranted comparison Marty to Hunk. I’m absolutely having no provable reason to believe Hank would do better, it is just silly.
