Lundqvist and Lupul named assistant all-star captains

I know, I know. It’s a pet peeve of mine. The actual word is alternate captain. But in this case, the assistants will assist the captains in selecting the all-star rosters.

Henrik Lundqvist was assigned to countryman Daniel Alfredsson’s team, which means he will play for co-coach John Tortorella.

Here’s the info from the NHL/NHLPA (apologies for the spacing):

Alfredsson Gets Countryman Lundqvist, Chara Teams With Northeast Rival Lupul;

Will Assist In Selecting At 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft™

NEW YORK / TORONTO (January 21, 2012) — Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the

New York Rangers and forward Joffrey Lupul of the Toronto Maple Leafs have been named

Assistant Captains for the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend in Ottawa, the National Hockey League

Players’ Association and the National Hockey League announced today. Lundqvist joins the

team of Captain Daniel Alfredsson from the All-Star host Ottawa Senators while Lupul

becomes part of the team of Captain Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins.

The Assistant Captains will assist with the team selection process during the 2012

Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft™ on Thursday, Jan. 26 (8 p.m., ET,

TSN, RDS, NBC Sports Network) and will help their Captains set their team rosters and

lineups for the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills CompetitionTM on Saturday,

Jan. 28 (7 p.m., ET, CBC, RDS, NBC Sports Network) and the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL®

All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 29 (4 p.m., ET, CBC, RDS, NBC Sports Network).

Lundqvist has backstopped the Rangers to first place in the Eastern Conference

standings, posting a 20-10-4 record with a 1.93 goals-against average, .936 save percentage

and four shutouts in 34 appearances. The 29-year-old has competed alongside Alfredsson for

their native Sweden in two Olympic Winter Games, including the gold medal-winning side in

2006. Lundqvist is the only goaltender in NHL history to post at least 30 victories in each of his

first six NHL seasons and is on track to extend that mark in 2011-12. He will be making his

third consecutive NHL All-Star Game appearance.

Lupul is enjoying the best season of his eight-year NHL career for Chara’s Northeast

Division-rival Maple Leafs, ranking fourth among all League scorers with 51 points (20 goals,

31 assists) in 46 games. He has teamed with fellow All-Star Phil Kessel (25-25–50) to

become the NHL’s top-scoring tandem over the first half of the regular season. Lupul already

has set a single-season career high in assists and is two points from matching his previous

best of 53, set with Anaheim in 2005-06. The 28-year-old Ft. Saskatchewan, Alberta native,

who registered a hat trick in the NHL YoungStars Game during All-Star Weekend in 2004, will

be making his NHL All-Star Game debut.

wow, so much for FIRST! lol

Well, well, well, if it isn’t our favorite rogue Miami Pimp…

Miami, seriously, some day, you will slip up and actually say what you really mean, and I fear that might totally disrupt the space-time continuum in a way that will find the world in shambles.

Anybody watching this game at Warren77 or another watering’ hole?

  4. Guess youse also saw that P.K. Slewfoot was fined $2,500 for his slew-foot on Chris Kunitz Friday. So how exactly does this work? Matt Cooke, Skidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin are allowed to slew-foot, and they are on the Penguins, but P.K. Slewfoot is not allowed to slew-foot against the Penguins?

Maybe you guys really are onto something with this Penguins bias.

  5. Do they slewfoot in the Mexican league! I wonder what “slewfoot” translates to in Spanish …

  6. M. Pimp is really having his way with the blog today…Dare I say he has made this blog his Vrbata?

Hmmm… Captain Alfredsson with Assistant King Henry… and Alfredsson has already said he will probably take countryman Defenseman (and teammate) Erik Karlsson… Alfredsson said of his first pick, “Probably Erik,” Alfredsson said. “My kids wouldn’t have it any other way.” (quoted from

    Team Sweden, here we come…

Torts better learn some Swedish if he doesn’t already know all the curse words…

    Mayan Astronomers — LOL

“Maybe you guys really are onto something with this Penguins bias.”

Carp, what are you talking about? The league’s really fair and balanced in their calls/decisions!

    Mayan Astronomers LOLOL
scroll down Miami’s link to read:

“In January 2012, the New York Rangers traded Eric Christensen to the Astronomers for future considerations (believed to be a lifetime of coupons to get the team into Cancun’s “Coco Bongo’s” nightclub for free). Christensen is the first NHL player to ever join Mexico’s ice hockey league.”

    Wikipedia is totally Bush-League!

  12. Manny Astronomo on

Actually, I just looked up Mato and it means “Bush or Jungle” so it’s basically like going out into the bush for a weekend. I don’t think that should be used in connection with PK Slewfoot! Let’s go with the Tobagon a pie instead? k?

  13. Staal you have really gone up a few in my book over the last week. You too, billy. Not that my book matters. Just letting you know.

  14. LMAO, Miami….I guess there isn’t much to do in Cancun at the moment. But the Wikipedia was a good one. NOT a bush-league…

  15. billybleedsblue on

Hurray! I’m in a book (not booked)!

I’m totally psyched about the game today, I think I’m gonna walk into town through the snow in a little bit and meet up with some RANGERS FANS!!!!! So, I probably won’t be around here for game time :( I’m not leaving just yet though :D and don’t worry, I’ll be careful in the snow; wearing enough blue to stand out in the white stuff :D

  16. Has anyone gone to the MSG viewing party that they host? If so how is it? I’m seriously going to canceling TWC if this doesn’t get resolved in the next few days. Can’t wait this.

  17. I don’t know what the heck I just typed.

I’m seriously going to cancel TWC*

    Can’t take this.*

  18. Good afternoon all! Manny, wish we’d talked about a meet-up earlier :( I’m barely out of bed….

I have such a tummy ache in anticipation of this game.

  19. billybleedsblue on

Alright, time to get motivated and head out into the world!
