It’s Go Time!

Game 44.

Ya boys have lost two of their last three. Crisis! … as they begin a big week that includes the Penguins Thursday and the Boston matinee Saturday.

The Rangers play the Predators, who have won five in a row, eight of nine, and who play pretty much the exact same way the Rangers play.

Brandon Dubinsky and Ruslan Fedotenko are both expected to return, and if so, Wojtek Wolski will be prucha’d. Anders Lindback (2-4, 2.75) starts in goal vs. Henrik Lunqvist. Ryan Suter is expected to miss the game (injured) for the Preds.

It’s another NBCSN (aka Versus) game … which means a 7:30 start, no pre-game, no post-game. But for you T-W Cable people, it means you might get to see the game.

I love gametime!!!! IM NOT excited ….IM PUMPED!!!!!

    PuMp up the JaM!!!

GO boyszzz lets make sum noise!!!!

  5. How come the Rangers (or any of the MSG teams) don’t do a postgame for every game, aside from playoffs? Mets and Yankees doing so was a smart idea. But don’t tell the Dolans what is smart. You might get sucker punched.

So much easier to be on the blog when I can watch the game on an actual teevee.

  6. Rod – no not set plays, just a simpler way to enter the zone. Set plays would never work for this team, they don’t have the puck movers they’d need for it once they got in.

The breakout would be more freeflowing more than anything else. They have a current set play they used to enter the zone, but 2 guys are posted on the boards opposite each other and because they don’t have the passers, they can’t get into the zone.

Keeping it simpler works with this squad because their strengths are keeping the puck deep and funneling traffic to the net. It also will give a guy like DZ the opportunity to get more involved since the far side is open for him to straddle between the slot and the point.

  7. LGR!!!

finally, Carl playing with Gabby!!! (i’ve only been calling for that since pre-season, but who’s counting!)

  8. I bet the Doc-haters are happy. As a Pierre-hater, I am happy. I like Doc, and I think it’s worth losing him for the exchange of not getting Pierre. Strader is a capable #2 and Engblom is decent.

  9. No game for me again. It is on nbcsports. Will not pay Cablevision a dime more than I already do.

  10. Alright, I’m back! Barely made. Looking at the amount of posts in previous thread, must be worth looking at later…

  11. Wow, thanks Brian Engblom. I never knew that Lundqvist was so good because he has a special “flair” for the game.
    What does that even mean?

  12. >>Ya boys have lost two of their last three.

Unless Gaborik and Richards come back from their holiday vacation, it’ll be three of four. Rangers will probably make this backup goalie look like 1994 Mike Richter.

  13. Funny, the last time these 2 teams played, I met the amazing, esteemed Linda. And had a great time with my friend A that weekend. Not to mention seeing the Rangers win. I hope for a repeat of that win.

  14. billybleedsblue on

oh cool, maybe there will be another awesome interview with Torts behind the bench in the middle of the game. What a great idea NBC. If only they covered every game.

  15. Rod

I can’t tell where I got Fishler info from…it’s classified!

He was talking about it durnv Devils pre game on MSG…

  16. whether there’s energy or not, it’s going to look like there’s not … between these two teams and the way they play.

    love ittttttttt!!!

woooooooooooo ohhhhhhhhhhhh hey hey hey hey hey!!!!

  18. carp

could be never know. im bored already watching this nashville team.

this is like the dallas game all over backman now lindback

  19. They had their game back two shifts before they scored. Nashville played last night, not sur how long they can keep the pressure

  20. Grabby

It’s all good, bro! It’s a joke from previous thread…

Btw, you and I are fighting for the first overall in wicky’s league! EPIC BATTLE!

  21. Maybe if you weren’t out island-hopping with two drinks in each hand (and each with an umbrella in it) on your iPhone, you’d know that, Captain.

  22. i know its awsome cccp. ive lost tons of players though recently. if skinner was still hurt, i’d have 5 top playes on IR. but imgettin lots of help from free agent, waiver adds. wickys doing great too. oh, i toldsally to beat you the otherweek cuz u were still undefeated. she did win too!haha

  23. He said something about Hagelin having “balls the size of a grain of rice”. Missed the rest. Working on my dossier.

  24. I’ll say this about the MSG crowd. This year they really seem to appreciate the blocked shots. And anticipate them.

  25. I feel more lost than usual here tonight. Can’t figure out why unless our resident ‘know-it-all’ is back and at it again..

  26. True, Carp…Feels like I’m in training camp again….a lot of new/old faces….I’m sure a couple of “sharp” comments will get me right back…

  27. I would prefer no one tries to block a Weber shot. That man (and Chara) could kill a person with their shots.

  28. Staal has looked pretty bad since coming back, and continues to come damn close to hanging out Hank to dry at least three times every game.

Hagelin should be on the power play whenever the Rangers get one

  29. yes very fast. versus sucks i do like liam the host during intermission. close friend of mine from college.

  30. wowie zowie that ws a huge save. lindback was damn goodlast season. no surprise hes stoning us so far. a lucky bounce only thing could beat him or this is tied. good first period though. much better than last game. few d lapses but overall a goodforechcking game. and hitting

  31. headzo- i hear that. this will bea low scoring game that goes right to the very end. great for our hearts!

  32. Grabby

I had a chance to beat Sally that week but I chose not to…I was being a good sport and let Sally beat me beacuse she is Sally :)

  33. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

yeahhh , lookin gooood!!! gooooood stuff , good shifts , good goal , gooood going , goood saves , good goaltending , gooood newssss!!! Things are looking gooood!!!

  34. flyers shorthanded goal 2-0 over wild who if they lose fall out of playoff spot after there huge start

  35. cccp, lol she couldve beat you if she added a few players. i told her to add somebody cuz one of her starting d men was scratched that game. she didnt sit him though. shes a good sport. i also wanted her to win just because shes sally!! if i play her again im letting her win.

  36. Devils on the other hand were unfortunately due for a rebound as long as their goaltending doesn’t slump.

  37. at least kovalchunk is getting me some fantasy point tonight. n giroux better step up. hey ccpunk, im gonna propose trade to u ok. check it out later.

lloyd-rangers need staal to play alot better for sure. he should be getting better each game, and its been slow. he might not be 100% still.

  38. Czechthemout!!! on

Good move Torts putting Mitchell on the PP. first he goes offside for some reason and then takes a stupid lazy penalty. But still no Hagelin on the power play.

    Just a brutal PP

  39. oh c’mon Czech

can’t put so much blame on Mitchell
    when most of the players
    are standing around the offensive
    zone as if they’re waiting
    from Sully as far as
    where to go

  40. just put boyle, prust and someone on a pp line together, with richie and mac at the points. why the hell not. theyre great down low and our skill guys stand around like idiots anyway

  41. Speaking of Avery, did anybody see the interview with the PGA Tour pro Every this weekend? He was suspended for a marijuana bust, and he pretty much said that he still intends to party, and that he knows more people who smoke weed than who don’t, and that maybe he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

  42. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

  43. Mitchell! He must be smelling other guys’ injuries healing, and playing for his roster spot the past few games.

  44. i understand Czech

i’m just saying that the pp
    is just horrible overall
    Mitchell’s miscues
    just in addition to….

  45. hey staal, we were all crappin on mitchell. lol. but good for him. although nashville looks really off tonight. i know were playing very well, so that has alot to do with it.

  46. survival game

are you people even watching? this hasn’t been close since about the 10 minute mark of period 1.

  47. Mike, I don’t think Nashville is playing bad. They’re just being outplayed for long stretches…

  48. Yeah, Henrik has hardly done any work in the last few minutes Lloyd. Is your feed delayed perhaps?

  49. Trotz=Potz and the game is not boring. Preds looks tired, like after long, fruitless hunt

  50. yea weve been really good tonight ilb. thats what i was getting at. weve been outplaying them so far

  51. This is a very good team they’re playing. The Rangers are better, but if they lose their concentration, this one may turn around…

  52. refs should be able to overturn the original call after they see the replay. why isnt that a rule?? they should start off the 3rd with us still on the pp

  53. I’ve seen more boring … like across the river for about 12 years … or the Roger Neilson pre-Mess teams … or … i could probably go on. but I don’t give a crap.

  54. That’s a call that they should check the replay on, just to make sure they get it right.

Also Carp, your comments are hilarious.

  55. Czechthemout!!! on

Wow! I see the ref in this game sees things just as clearly as the ref in the Giants game.

  56. Olga Folkyerself on

He doesn’t have to lose teeth, BANJ. He can keep them in his pocket after the game.

  57. These Peggy commercials are played out. Nobody’s buying whatever they’re selling, and outside of Boston, I think people believe that Tim Thomas is a bit odd, to say it nicely.

  58. It’s General Carp, Spider, and I’m at my best when I’m a little pee’d off … and a few people helped get me at my best here today.

  59. ThisYearsModel on

I think that Stralman has earned the 6th spot on this club. When Sauer comes back, Bickel goes down and Woywitka hangs around until Eminger gets back.

  60. I don’t think it’s an automatic that Bickel goes down … maybe they pick their spots with him. Like Boston. And Philly. And NYI.

Wow. did you see that Orpik hit on the ballerina or whatever he is?

  61. And CCCP, Fischler didn’t ‘break’ LeCavalier being traded for Schneider,

he said he could see a fantasy trade coming true of VL for Luongo.

    So nice goin’!

  62. We’ve had more entertaining teams than that, for sure. Like 2002 collection with Matt Barnaby….:-)

  63. Taylor Hall video isn’t pretty. How hard is it to skate in warmups?

Funny story I once heard about Rico Fata, who came blasting out of the runway in warmups and started circling, counter-clockwise.
When (supposedly) Messier saw him buzzing at warp speed, he said, jeez how come this guy hasn’t been here helping us?

When the skaters all reversed direction, Fata kept on going counter-clockwise.
And Mess said oh, that’s why. LOL

  64. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Rupp should be on the first line , or on a line with Richards and cally.

GO BOYZZZZ!! lets go go go go go go go go!!!

  65. billybleedsblue on

Carp, I don’t think those Ford press conferences are fake. In the commercial, they say it’s an actual surprise press conference, so that MUST be true.

Oooo, idea, idea, idea! There should be a surprise press conference of Torts behind the bench in the middle of a game! That would be sooooooooooo cool!

  66. >>>What is with the announcers’ obsession with the Nashville goalie’s height and weight? Give it a rest.

He must have Joe M. on his cellphone, telling him about the guy’s “stats”….

  67. I wish I was invited to one of those surprise press conferences. I’d be all over them. Why did you buy a Ford? You couldn’t afford a real car? All the other cars were taken? Why isn’t Hagelin on the PP, you stubborn egomaniac?

  68. Oh, I can’t wait to read the previous post…Sounds like it was fun for Carp…Something tells me I won’t be surprised at all

  69. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    I hope this don’t jinx Hank……I smell a sh……..just kiddin!!

GO RANGERSSS , Can’t let those moron from Boston catch up to us!!! Boston won the cup and they think they are all that..Lucic is a goon and that whole team should stick thier head up you know whats..

GO RANGERSSSS !!! win this thang!!

  70. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Nice to see NHL refs borrow a page from their NFL brethren regarding in game mistakes. Oh what am i saying? Not only didn’t the NFL apologize to the gmen?, they defended their incompetence. No big deal… No way the giants can beat the packers in the playoffs anyway … Never going to happen – this year or any other.

  71. OK, I’m watching this commercial with no sound … this redhead is talking about for $9.95. don’t spoil it for me.

  72. billybleedsblue on

ha! Eddie, I heard from a completely unreliable source that the NFL refs from Sunday’s GIANTS WIN called the NHL refs from the Winter Classic for some tips on how to call the game “fairly.” By completely unreliable source, I mean me, and I just made this all up, ya know, for a goof.

  73. ThisYearsModel on

One of those refs in the Giants-Packers game used to play for the Green Bay Little Packers.

  74. That was a brutal hockey moment right there Carp.

Bums like Hunter ushered in the era of the ‘agitator’, along with guys like Tik. No Carp?

Never thought you should be allowed to strictly distract and harass the opposition into penalties and not really, you know, play.

Big game @ 10:30. CAL vs. SJ.

  75. Is the play by play guy a baseball announcer? He keeps saying American league instead of AHL and his voice has a baseball sound to it.

  76. Yeah, but there’s a difference between a cooke-disturber and a cheap-shot artist who tries to hurt people — like Clarke, Hunter, Cooke, even ol’ loveable Ulfie.

Staal, no. he’s way less than 6-7 and he makes $60M. But only for the next nine years.

  77. Could swear Boyle’s been stickhandling along the boards with his back to the net
    for about 1/2 the season!

  78. Good job the Rangers had this one wrapped up inside the first 10 minutes, because they’ve had to work hard since.

  79. Ok, Carp. You just seem a little ‘off’ tonight was all. And I am good, overworked and underpaid, and lighter in the wallet, but good.

  80. billybleedsblue on

LW your “Cap Hit of Injured Players” piece on your blog is pretty intense! How long did it take you to develop that idea and your system? That’s nuts man, nice work!

  81. billybleedsblue on

    CT — the goalie is 6’6″ tall I believe… and their number 1, Pekka Rinne’s 6’5″

  82. That’s a pretty impressive win. This one was a playoff type hockey game. Not the most entertaining, but very hard played.

  83. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    Shut out !!!! sweeeet !!!

GREAT GAME , 62pts!!! Eat that Boston , Eat that Chicago ChUmps!!! Yeah baby , Rangers back on the winning streak!!

  84. Wait, why are YOU ticked at the DOT asshats, Carp?? I’m the one who had to shell out almost 2 grand. AND I still need a new wheel.

  85. Im not a Torts fan, more of a Renney guy, but its undeniable how much this group responds to him-so nice win, great hustle by Callahan at the end-hey Torts, smile for once when the camera is on ya!

  86. billybleedsblue on

    lol TooToo

CT, I’ve been bouncing back and forth between Radio/TV broadcast tonight… the tall goalie thing was something that Dave got into early in the radio coverage…

  87. Sorry to hear, BANJ

And yes, they do play a train whistle for TooToo in Nashville. Nice arena, nice town, but wow are their fans a bunch of hicks.

  88. Evening everyone,

    It’s all in the details

Tonight’s win over the Predators showed exactly what the Rangers can do to an opponent – when they do all the little things – and do them well

The defensive zone coverage by the entire team – particularly in the third period – and their play through the neutral zone for 60 minutes led to multiple counter attacks

Plus, their game below the hashmarks in the offensive zone penned in the Predators for long stretches

This tilt was very similar to the shutout victory in Toronto last Saturday – getting the lead and grinding the opposition into sawdust

Impressive – particularly against a team that plays the same style

    No tailspins here, folks

    King with the shutout

    Girardi with a much-deserved goal

John Mitchell – maligned by many on this board but not by me – with the insurance marker

First team in the NHL to get to 62 points

    Bring on the Pens

  89. C3!! What’s shakin’, man!? What’s with your name? What’s the story!?

Doing fine here – especially after this game!

  90. billy

Thanks. Idea was quick enough. Just found there wasn’t anywhere listing man-games lost, so figured I’d do it myself and made sense to weight it. Takes a while to pull it together each month though.

  91. billybleedsblue on

LW — awesome. Do you have a spreadsheet that does some of the work for you? Hmmm… you should make an app! Or make some kind of program that does most of the work for you…

At any rate, nicely done AND clever naming schemes ie “CHIP” AND respectable levels of insanity ie “subject to the resulting mutant speaking an acceptable level of French by the end of the surgery” lol

    Well done!

  92. Educator

Please leave Renney out of the discussion. Tortorella may be a grouch but he wants to win
more than he wants to be liked. That sadly is what Renney is all about. The picture in
EDM should be far brighter than it is. Another disaster tonight vs. CLB

  93. “Rangers owner Jim Dolan, who hasn’t spoken to Rangers media since lockout, makes surprise visit to interview room. Says Rangers near Cup.”

If Dolan is grandstanding, something tells me an announcement on a big deal isn’t far off.

  94. Boyle was working tonight like a galley-slave. Who arrogantly mumble badly about him? Mitch can fire his real estate agent in Hartford. Hank was again back to his bestself.
Nevertheless, as I predicted, Rangers will be 1 game up, 1 down for the rest of the season. I could explain why, but too lazy and tired now.
Who were 3 stars and who got fedora/barsalino?

  95. The way that many of these posts are worded one would think that this was an inferior team that Rangers played. I tell you – with a lesser goaltender this score could have as easily been reversed.

Isn’t it also amusing to read the pre – game estimates and then notice how many folks were wrong, and the most wrong of them all is the ever opining of the Pimp of Miami?

I can imagine him sitting there in his cluttered little room, contemplating his navel, and muttering darkly to himself,” Bush league lucky bums,”, and then penning some unsigned letters to the NY Post, and threatening to halt his subscription.

I enjoyed this game immensely, largely because at times this looked like mirror images of one another by the two teams.

  96. stevezipay Steve Zipay
James Dolan in surprise post-game remarks: Rangers are following plan set up in 2004, are near Stanley Cup

Dope….when was the last time he made a comment publicly about the Rangers….

  97. C3 and Wicky, just in case you didn’t know this already… I love you guys.

Also I need to be better at not totally neglecting my fantasy hockey teams.

  98. thenyrangers Mr. Dolan: “I am very proud of the organization..I am particularly proud of Mr. Sather…it’s all about the system he built…”
