NEW YORK RANGERS POST-GAME NOTES
January 12, 2012 (Game 41, Home Game 19)
Madison Square Garden – New York, New York

Team Notes:

–        The Rangers were defeated by the Ottawa Senators, 3-0, tonight at Madison Square Garden to snap their five-game winning streak, and are now 10-2-0 in their last 12 contests.

–        New York is now 27-10-4 (58 pts) on the season, including a 13-4-2 mark at home.  The loss also ended the Blueshirts’ five-game home winning streak.

–        The Rangers remain in first place of the Eastern Conference standings, holding a one point lead over second-place Boston.

–        The Rangers’ .707 winning percentage is the team’s best start through 41 games in 40 years, when the 1971-72 Blueshirts began the season with a 28-6-7 record (.768 winning percentage), and is the third best start in franchise history.

–        The Blueshirts’ 13-4-2 (28 pts) mark at MSG is their best start at home through 19 games since 1995-96 (14-2-3, 31 pts).

–        The Rangers out-hit the Senators, 37-21, and were credited with 16 blocked shots in the contest.  Entering tonight’s action, New York ranked second in the NHL in hits (1,134) and sixth in blocked shots (653).

Player Notes:

–        Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves in his first loss since Dec. 15 at St. Louis, and is now 19-8-4 overall with a 9-4-2 mark at home.  The Dec. 15 game was also the last time Lundqvist allowed more than two goals in a game (three).

–        Dan Girardi was credited with three hits, two blocked shots and led all skaters with 26:29 of ice time in the contest.  Earlier today, Girardi was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game, having led the league in average ice time (27:18) and ranking fourth in blocked shots (102) entering tonight’s action.

–        Brian Boyle led all skaters with a season-high, eight hits, and tied for the game-high with four shots on goal while logging a season-high, 19:56 of ice time.

–        Stu Bickel was credited with a game-high, four blocked shots in 14:35 of ice time.

–        Wojtek Wolski registered three shots on goal and logged 14:50 of ice time, while making his return to the lineup after missing 27 games following surgery to repair a sports hernia.  The game was Wolski’s 400th career NHL appearance.

Post-Game Quotes:

–        John Tortorella on the team…

“I think our room has really grown, in that we are expecting more out of one another.  I think that is a good thing that is going on in our room, where there is a push within the players and not from the coaches being in there all the time.  Our room is definitely growing in that area.  I’m not sure how they acted tonight – I don’t go in there win or lose.”

–        Brian Boyle on whether a loss is bound to happen or not…

“We have had success in the last bunch of games and obviously throughout the year, but it still feels terrible to lose, it sucks, it’s the worst. We don’t think a loss is bound to happen by any means. We go into every game thinking we’re going to win. We don’t go into any game thinking you’re going to lose. That’s kind of ridiculous.”

Team Schedule:

–        The Blueshirts’ practice schedule for tomorrow, January 13, is 12:00 p.m. at MSG Training Center.

–        The Rangers will return to action when they face-off against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, January 14, at Air Canada Centre (7:00 p.m.), to begin a back-to-back weekend set against Original Six opponents.  The game will be televised live on MSG 2 and can be heard on AM 1600.

  1. REPOST:

When was the last time anyone asked Torts about the horrific PP and why it stinks so damn much? I mean, wtf? Who’s in charge of it? Im sure he doesnt tell them to stand around! So then why don’t the players get the message?

  2. Glad you recognize immidiately yorfolkerself as an idiot.
That’s you, who are here a foreign object.

  3. Stranger Nation on

They beat us at our own game. If the Refs don’t call interference in 2012, we will struggle to score.

Staal looked good. Hags is a dynamo.

Thought we gave them too much, not standing them up on blue line.

  4. eddie eddie eddie on

cccp = brooklyn pimp ….excellent point…….clearly torts and sullivan must see this…sather high in the sky has to see it…messier, sitting with sather must see this…..under torts, the pp has been horrid….lots of perimeter passing…no one moves without the puck……here is a simple thought…take a look at the wings PP on film…or any good team’s PP……our team plays the same teams…we should be able to fix this one would think…

  5. eddie eddie eddie on

4ever a pain in the assen……..what is your beef?…..why are you so angry?……….do you need some chronic?

  6. eddie eddie eddie on

4ever – after some chronic – and this be heavy duty…trust me….i know my chronic…..you will not be so angry….

  7. eddie eddie eddie on

rozy had one major flaw…he couldn’t keep the puck in the zone…..at least twice every PP…the puck would jump by him or past him….he was useless….

  8. Stranger Nation on

NYR – He may be their best offensive Dman. Ironically seems like Daany G is starting to make mistakes we didn’t see in 2011. Gave Spezza way too much room coming in the zone on the goal.

Of course Artie’s touch pass to boyle led to turn over prior to goal. Get it deep! North and South Artie.

  9. What grade would you guys give Brad Richards, right now, at the half-way point in the season?

I mean, other than scoring huge GWG and game-tying goals, what has Richards really done for this team?

    Has he improved the PP?

    B+

  10. eddie eddie eddie on

here is sam’s call…….” behind the net, along the boards……..back to the point….ohhh, past rozival and the rangers have to get back onside….1.04 left in the ranger PP”

  11. eddie eddie eddie on

nyr fan…richards has very soft hands…and is very calm with the puck…he needs the other guys on the PP to skate….he has great size and wonderful passing skills….but if the rangers dont move without the puck…his passing skills have him just throwing the puck across the ice to the other point

  12. my brutha, eddie eddie eddie, I agree….but he was brought in to QB the PP and he isn’t doing a great job…but you’re right, it’s definitely not all on him…

B+ Rich is fair. An improved Gabby and MDZ is the only other difference from last season so got to give him props for coming in as big money FA, becoming Asst Capt and the having the best record is a good testament. He needs a finisher to play with.

  18. i burn too,
my favorite rappers are the Wu,

  21. I thought he looked OK in the 1st. Was one of the better forwards for the Rangers. Then, he got softer and softer as the game went on. Hardly touched the puck.

Like I said yesterday about Wolski: Woof Woof…Bow Wow…

  31. Stranger Nation on

There was a play in the 3rd when Wolski was forechecking and came in hard on the Sens D man who was vulnerable trying to play the puck and Wolski pulled up. WTB? I think Torts popped a blood vessel on that one.

  32. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman on

You will not like me. But the more you hate me the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

  34. Realistico the Not Quite Great on

I had hoped to offer a mid-season “take” on a winning night, but they’re 5-1 last six, so that’s more than good enough (and, yeah, me-too, on that 11-1-1 stat for the Sens here. Wow!!!)

I needed more from Torts this season than local testimonials about his hockey wonderfulness.
I needed to see a better record at home – well done
I needed to see better defensive positioning, so the necessity to block shots would decrease, along with the corresponding and predictable injuries – well done.
I needed to see serious structural improvement, even a little imagination and creativity by gosh, in the PP. And for a short while (a month ago?) it seemed to be starting – but, as testified here in the last few days – not very well done at all.
I needed to see youngsters continuing to grow – well done (and add my praise to the good guys laboring on staff in Nutmegville).
I needed to see a decrease in the Hope passes – y’know, like the classic from Master Ryan McD against the Caps last spring that helped halt a 3-0 tide, and diminish whatever chances that young and gritty and talent-limited side had to at least extend the Caps – not so well done (and it’s aleague-wide phenomenon, I know).
I hoped that the huge contract for Brich would seem immediately justified, even to an old
realist – but so far, a tough grader almost always, I’d give him a teasing “B” – so not bad, but not enthusiastically well done, and, like Albert Pujols’ paper, not looking like it’s gonna be a surprise gem of a deal three, four seasons thataway.
As for Hank, I had (big-time scary) the same thought as the host a few games back about his glove – and even had one of the two references in my brain before reading it in the copy – that would be Brooks of Third Base (Ozzie Smith doesn’t work for me – SS doesn’t have to
“snare” balls at the speed of the corner, which is baseball’s best approx of the speed of the puck, I think). And he’s been a joy to watch – but I still have some skepticism that he can
bring it that level, seven hard games if needed, series after series. Show me.

So, all in all, a bunch o’ youse had a much better take of Torts’ work last spring, and where this team was headed, than I did, f’sure. But remains to be seen if y’have the best one.
    Much work still to do.

Finally, prospects: ILB posted a nice take a few days ago about where this team might go come spring. I wouldn’t change much. I don’t have the reference handy, but he seems to do it every so often, so it’ll probably come around again. The realists of the world salute him:-).

  35. eddie eddie eddie on

    i thinks we have a core-tet

olga, s.nation, nyr fan, and the eddies….what shall we call ourselves?

  36. eddie eddie eddie on

realistico – there aint be one rhyme in your post, what up with that?…..you needs to be jivin and high fivin when you writhin, my brutha

  37. Realistico the Not Quite Great on

PS: Since I’m an Extreme Irregular here, I parked this at the end of the night ’cause I
generally don’t have time/energy for a back-and-forth. Like Torts’ power play, nothing
particularly dramatic or imaginative above – just one more pebble in the pond.

  38. eddie eddie eddie on

realistico – you made many excellent points and i hope you that you write more often :)

  39. camalleri cap hit $6 mill per.

WOW thought it would be a lot less. rangers would have needed to give up; WW, EC, and Avery.

I would not have traded for Cammileri with that hit under any rationale.

need 1 or 2 forwards that can score, somehow somewhere.

    kreider or someone…

  40. Stranger Nation on

Kreider, Hags on first 2 lines. Speed is life. Prince Carl was again the best forward on the team tonite. Artie has the tools, but is, how do you say in English, ummm, not so smart?

I think hags Feds and mitchell can generate some O. He’ll, hags and Feds are doing it with boyle.

  41. Stranger Nation on

Again pace of play and lack of whistles hurt us. If you are sending 2 forwards in on forecheck and refs let D hold us up, our advantage is negated.

My greatest concern is officiating in 2nd half will slow us down.

  42. Well, Im not going to get overly critical or make excuses either. I think it needs to be said that they just played back to back games against the two goalies that have arguably give them the most trouble in this league. They were due for a loss here. And it was an ugly one.

As for Cammalleri- it’s nice to know that after all these years it still only takes coming out with some harsh words for the organization to have your bags packed for you

  43. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

    Eddie –

They won’t even dress Avery in Hartford. Couple Rangers players wear a dress, every night.

  44. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

I reiterate my statement that, as of now, the Rangers are the third-best team in the National Hockey League.

Goal scoring percentage shares, as of a.m. January 13th, are: Boston 66%; Vancouver 60%; New York Rangers 57%.

Of course the regular season is not over and there will be changes. Of course any contending team can jump up in the post-season and win The Cup. No one would contend otherwise, based-upon historical evidence. But it is “unassailable” that as of now, Boston looms the strong favorite to defeat Vancouver in a repeat finals match-up. Stay tuned.

  45. Honestly though, who cares about who is the “best team” “goal percentage” wise. Rankings like that mean nothing. The top seed doesn’t always win.
