Rangers-Coyotes in review

1) This is one of my favorite of many stats so far through 40 games, with the mid-point of the season coming Thursday: Henrik Lundqvist, who has won seven in a row, has limited opponents to two goals or fewer 21 times in 29 starts. Holy shishkebob. Yet he was surprisingly 1-3 in shootouts before last night. “It was our turn to win this one and we deserved it, too,” Lundqvist said, and he was right.

2) Anybody watching Shane Doan in that game? Does anybody think he wouldn’t be a great rental for this team? I think he sure would … and I think the Rangers coach likes and admires him, too. Lundqvist made just an enormous save on him to clinch the breakaway contest victory.

3) It was funny how John Tortorella said before the game how they need more scoring from the third and fourth lines, and in the first period, almost from the git-go, John Mitchell, Brian Boyle, Brandon Prust, Ruslan Fedotenko all had huge chances … and didn’t score. Fedotenko ultimately did, with huge help from Boyle in front. Tortorella’s right. They will need more scoring than they’ve gotten from those guys, plus Brandon Dubinsky, in the second half. And you could even include  Artem Anisimov and Derek Stepan on the first line

4) In case I’ve never told you this before, I really, strongly dislike the breakaway contest they sometimes hold after the hockey game is over as a way of deciding the hockey game. But that shootout was plain crazy. Four of the first five Rangers shooters didn’t even get a shot on goal. What is that?

5) What a great shot on the winner by Stepan. And how determined was Marian Gaborik to keep the shootout alive after being robbed by Mike Smith on the penalty shot in OT?

6) Wait. Penalty shot in OT? Do you think there was an NBC conspiracy?

7) Mike Smith was pretty good all night, because even though the Rangers’ top two lines were mediocre, I thought territorially they dominated the game. Had the puck a bunch. More than usual. And the Coyotes’ trap had a lot to do with that. But unlike other traps, the Rangers handled this one exceptionally well.

8) That PP really stinks.

9) For some reason, the atmosphere in the Garden last night was pretty solid, right from the start, despite a visit from a non-conference, trapping team. And it wasn’t Michal Rozsival’s return, I’m pretty sure.

10) Always good to see two favorites who were around last night … The Great Sam Weinman, founder of the blog; and of course Don Maloney.

11) Going back to point 3 about the scoring. Yes, they’re going to need more of it from all four lines. They are also going to hit patches of three, four, six, eight games where they can’t buy goals. But the way this relentless team defends, and the way it plays hard for almost the full 60 (65) almost every night, it’s going to win more games than most teams that don’t score enough. Does that make sense?

12) Does it make sense that the Patrick Division, Eastern Conference, National freakin’ Hockey League-leading New York Rangers have lost nine regulation games over the first 40 games of a hockey season?

My Three Rangers Stars:
1) Henrik Lundqvist.
2) Marian Gaborik.
3) Carl Hagelin.

  1. 11) Yes, perfect sense, and given what we saw from the coach on 24/7 he really does have them focussed on the ethos: defend and do the hard things right and the goals and wins will come.
We dont have the firepower like some of the other teams so we have to make sure we consistently outwork them to win.

  2. This is what I got from the game.

Hagelin continues to impress, The crowd actually gets a buzz when the puck approaches him or is near him. I thought Artie had a better night than he has had of late.

On the TV side How many times can Anton Stralman be interviewed by Al Trautwig between periods in a row ? I think Stralsy is going for DiMaggio’s record.

Rangers find ways to win, Mike Smith was awesome in net tonight.

The Rangers are young, fun and full of Jam.

  3. 4th!

“This is the first time in franchise history the Rangers have four winning streaks of at least five games in the first half of a season.”

  4. 5th! I’m slacking off. The soccerpansy season has started. No more (or at least few) weekday night games for me until the playoffs….

No opinions on the game, happy for the 2p

  5. Love Henrik’s tweet about Gabby. We often talk about the blazing speed of Hagelin, but it is amazing to watch Gabby skate!

“HLundqvist30 Way to keep it alive today @MGaborik10! There is fast and then there is Gabby fast… Wow”

  6. One thing that impressed me was the speed of Stepan’s wrister to win it and his confidence in the shot. He just skated up found the right angle and whizzed it straight past Smith’s glove.

Doan is exactly the sort of rental player we should be looking at, his last 2 playoff series he has 7 points in 7 games and he plays a hard-nosed game that would fit with our team (although he might have to apologise to Cally first!)

  7. Gabby was like a locomotive in the shoot out. Fast and determined.
Defense was very good last night and Staal looks like he’s really coming along.
Dubi sure looked mad after the Doan hit on Cally.

Great shot by Step to win it.

What a great feeling to only have suffered through 9 losses do far. And most of them seem like a distant memory. Remember when we felt relieved to get one point out of a game? Not anymore.

    I love our Rangers!

  8. 2pts they should have got, against mediocre team.
The bears are coming for a test soon, if they play like that, they will get destroyed.
    just sayin…LGR

  9. Certainly wouldn’t complain if the Rangers acquired some extra scoring threat(s) in the right deal, but despite the scoreline, last night was hardly Exhibit A in proving that the team’s offense is completely anaemic as one or two Rants On Demand seem to suggest.

Phoenix were outchanced and out-possessed most of the game and the Rangers could’ve been comfortable winners were it not for some bad luck and a great game from Smith.

  10. If the shoot out shot that hit the post and then bounced off of Lundqvist and then had gone in, would it have counted? I’m thinking yes, but not 100% sure.

  11. shane doan would be perfect piece to this puzzle. we know the track record with sather and maloney. hopefully we could get him and give up some picks and a prospect and keep the roster in tact

  12. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

Ah, yes, “The Great” Sam Weinman. That is in punctuation marks, right? I know Maurice Richard fans up in Montreal still love Sambo, where he is a “household name.” lol

  13. Yes. No. 11 makes perfect sense.

And you’re favorite stat (Hank, 2 goals or less allowed in a ridiculous 21 of 29)
perfectly illustrates how they’ve gotten away with their inept offense.

It’s not rocket science. They need two pieces, two spark plugs to run right.

One wicked righty shot via trade and hopefully Krieder (who might be as fast as Hagelin; it’d be interesting to see who’d win a sprint) can come in and contribute.

  14. and I meant to say, then, THEN, they will be one baddass team.

Balanced as all hell, with a playoff ready game honed to perfection.

Full marks for what they’ve accomplished thus far.
It may not have any offensive flow, it may not be entertaining watching endless down-low cycles and a rudderless PP, but you can’t say enough of how they’ve paid attention to detail and given it up for the greater good.

  15. Not disagreeing that the team could use another top scorer Rod but who are they going to give up and will the expected production of the new acquisition be that much of a boost over the assets going the other way?

Rangers are a tick above league average in offense which is better than they have been in the last few years. However their average goal differential is better than most of the other teams. Yes Boston is an absurd outlier, on pace for a differential of something like +140 but how many more +6 goal games do you think they’ll have? Otherwise only 1 team that has scored more than the Rangers have given up less goals than them (I’ll let you guess who that is). Several of those teams have practically even or negative goal differentials so sometimes the best offense is a good defense.

  16. Another hard fought & well earned 2 pts. Now that Torts has a lineup that he’s reluclent to change, how likely is it that he’s stressing the defensive aspect of the game until it’s instinctive before turning his attention to the offense?

  17. Stranger Nation on

They moved staal with stralman and did not like the results. Not sure of reason why he made the switch, be able to learn more on thurs if that is new pairing and how that impacts the TOI for the D.

Hags on PP is making more and more sense. PP features lots of standing around, that kid is never standing around. Been very impressed with board work below the goal line and back checking. On the goal scoring play at least 2 times he regained possession after 2 of his line mates were in trouble.

On the same note Dubi is getting nothing going on PP. His lack of production is hurting the unit’s performance.

Feds scored? I guess we shouldn’t send him to Hartford yet…

  18. I think the game could have been 4-1 or more. Boyle missed a few and Smith’s glove and pads robbed a few others.

Love how this team just keeps competing, keeps coming at ya. No quit. And just when you think there is a chance for a letdown, there isn’t.

BTW, Derek Morris….where was this guys game when we rented him? WTF? He was their best D-man, IMHO. Shane Doan would be a good rental, yes. But where do you put him?

Love Marc Staal getting more minutes, making a rush, joining the rush, etc. Maybe he was partially at fault on the goal after getting plunked in the foot, but I love how deep our team is that allows us the luxury of playing him enough to get his legs back.

And, Stralman can skate btw. Very smooth. Watch him skating with the puck or retreiving the puck below the faceoff dots. He changes direction and stops and goes in a flash. Really a strong skater.

I like Bickel, but when Sauer Power comes back I think Bickel is the odd-man out. But boy is our D-corps deep and young!

  19. Blueshirt in Paris on

Agree, I think Doan would be a great add. He is a UFA at the end of this year so price should not be astronomical. Giving the relationship between Slats and Maloney there could be a handshake deal for us not to try to resign him in the off-season if PHO want to bring him back.

  20. CT,

You may see a deal where they don’t give up anyone off the current roster.

And, while noting what you said, goal differential can be misleading.
How often is a tie game a life & death struggle for two periods, and when someone finally
nets the go ahead goal, they then add insurance (especially when the other team tries to open up) ? And/or they add an empty-netter? So those numbers can get skewed.

And in the NYR case they’re really skewed because they’ve done such a tremendous job of scoring timely goals to go with their D and out-of-this-world goaltending.

And the overriding story line, being No. 1 overall in the league (and piling up team and personal milestones) seems so powerful it’s easy to think everything is hunky dory.

  21. Smith is really good. He gives up a lot of rebounds but man is he good.

Hank was Hank. Yet again. He’s creeping up to leading the Vezina discussion (Maybe Quick/Thomas are the leaders right now since Rangers never get awards).

I had to watch this game online because Time Warner and MSG both suck. I am sure they are both to blame. It makes watching the games REALLY difficult because it’s hard to a) find the puck; 2.) see who is on the ice; and D.) see the actual shots. The other downer was the Coyotes broadcast who seemed to under estimate the Rangers until the last 3 minutes of the game when they FINALLY gave them credit for being the hardest working team ever.

  22. I’ve wanted Doan on this team since 96.

He was a monster when we played in Phoenix last month.

I didnt like what I saw from him last night and more & more think it wouldn’t be the perfect fit (though it may be an easier deal to make).

  23. Fat Guy in A Little Coat on

Not sure if you bozos talked about this yet, so I apologize if I am picking at a scab here. BUT, like Doan or don;t like Doan, he absolutely DESTROYED Callahan last night on what I thought was a clean hit (OK, maybe a fraction of a second too late). Hey, I’m like you – I hate giving any credit to anyone on another team. But that was a malachi crunch and I was surprised that Callahan got up so easily. Bottom line though, IT’S OUR TIME NOW.

  24. Good morning, boneheads!
Was at the game last night, the MSG was not only surprisingly loud, but realty full. Very few empty seats. Saw Maloney walking around and looking at the renovations with some guy from MSG, guess he hasn’t seen it yet.

I thought they should’ve won the game in regulation, with much healthier goal differential. Smith was very, very good even before he stopped Gaborik in OT.

  25. Doodie Machetto on

What a crowd last night. Full house. Even seats by the glass were mostly full. Even though it was full it was still pretty quiet for much of the game, but during the 3rd period it was loud, and during the OT and shootout it almost sounded like a playoff game. I guess that’s what it’s like when the team is in first place.

I was hoping to see Hagelin get a go in the shootout.

  26. Doodie Machetto on

Something else I noticed: Staal not only joined the rush a lot, but was frequently the guy that went to the net. He looks like he is getting his legs back a bit.

  27. Richards finally had his legs back last night.

He must’ve been playing with a bug or thru an injury.

  28. Doodie & Ilb – that’s really great to hear about the crowd. The Coyotes announcers were talking about how loud MSG is and how all players “mark those games on their calendar” because it’s so intimidating blah blah blah. I thought they were just using rhetoric to hype up their viewers. Good to know the building had a bit of Jam.

  29. I guess that’s what it’s like when the team is in first place.

Also – ticket prices on StubHub triple.

  30. I, too, believe they need to add some scoring, preferably upfront. Sather may be in good position now to look around preemptively, or he can wait. Too many teams are still in the hunt for PO spot, and the Rangers do have a healthy above .500 cushion. How healthy? If they have a .500 record from now on, they will still have 100 points. If it can be done without trading away any important young players, it should be done.

  31. You guys that were in the building, on our first few skillz competition attempts our guys lost the puck. The Coyotes announcers mentioned that it appeared there was a problem with the ice in the area where they lost the puck. Any truth to that?

  32. The, GA, btw, was started with Rupp’s cute drop pass in the offensive zone which got intercepted and they could never recover. I’m sure Torts gave him an earful.

Staal is almost back, Richards has actually been better for a few games now. I have reservations about starting Hagelin on PP at the moment. He is a great player, and his speed is a killer, but he is much better without the puck, than with it. At least as of now.

  33. Yes, Manny, the ice looked atrocious. Nothing new.

You have to admire Boyle/Fedotenko/Hagelin line. Forget the goal. The moment they get the puck, you know it’ll get in the opposing zone, and good luck trying to get the puck back.

  34. Eddie3 apparently return to the blog last night, hopefully for good. Really miss the guy.

Eddie- you bring your MZA back here permanently and forget about bickering. We all disagree on many different things, and very often things get personal (absolutely unnecessary). But it still is a great community of friends and fellow Rangers fans. Your sabbatical is taking too long, buddy! :-)

  35. Returned….sheesh.

Rod- I actually told my son last night that I was rooting for them to get Doan for some time, but yesterday I told him I wasn’t sure about it anymore. What didn’t you like, just curious?
I’ll give you my take. You see, despite his current hattrick, I do not see him being a scoring threat anymore. He is a great team player who can play physical and go to the net. But he is going to replace someone in top 6. And that will remove some production from our first two lines. I doubt he will add enough scoring to substantiate anything, or anybody that they will have to give up in that trade.

  36. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Mike Smith played out if his mind last night.. The stop on gabby’s PS was insanely good. The rangers are playing with that quiet confidence where they just know it is a matter of time before they win. Reminds me if the stories told about jack Nicklaus marching down the back 9 of a major tourney and another golfer was tied or a stroke up… Jack knew he was going to win..the other guy knew jack was going to win, and jack knew that the other guy knew that jack was going to win…. Before this season in a guest blog I wrote CF for this ranger team…..time to revise that…. This team wins the cup.

Captain Ryan Callahan, come get the Stanley cup.

  39. @AdamRotter@ NEWS: Olivia Munn Broke Up With Brad Richards

Uh oh…..Now we know why he was so sad for a few days!

  40. Eddie – it occurs to me that you were either posting on the blog or not posting on the blog for some time. It would also follow that when you were posting, you were not not posting and when you were not posting you weren’t also posting.

  41. Yea I am not really Anti-Avery just really annoyed with some of the people that have since disappeared and their weird attitudes.

I try to only vibe with NYR now. Cool Runnin’s Mon.

  42. Bobby Clarke can go straight to hell…

What did you think of the Hyper Bowl (Winter Classic), Eddie?

  43. 1 more forward at least. i was having nightmares of DUbi being out and playing EC or WW a lot of minutes and the team suffering a ton..

    1 more 2 way, 20 + goal scoring forward…….

  44. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Manny – I was actually not posting while wanting to post. I was diametrically opposed to not posting which made me want to post more. The raging internal battle between my ying and tabs was driving my anti posts to a all time posting high. Akin to writer’s block, my anti post posts were brilliant had they been posted.

CT congrats on daddy hood… Love that angel every moment

  47. Is that why you fly the way you do? Trying to prove something? Yeah, your old man did it right. What I’m about to tell you is classified. It could end my career. We were in the worst dogfight I ever dreamed of. There were bogeys like fireflies all over the sky. His F-4 was hit, and he was wounded, but he could’ve made it back. He stayed in it, saved three planes before he bought it.

  50. so… when will Mitchell be useful? Avery or Wolski can’t do what Mitchell does? I bet either one of them can… and i bet they can do it much better… then Torts has Mitchell take SO?? what? ok then…

:D woooooooooooooo Rangers keep on winnin’ AND EDDIE’s back!? hahaha, we were up pretty late last night… well, late on the Least Coast…

Seriously though, Kathryn Tappen is going to find this blog when she or her person that tracks her online-ness starts searching the Interwebs…

Right now, a pre-game post from Carp ranks in the middle of the 4th page of search results when searching for:
    blog search: Kathryn Tappen

You can use “blog search: _YOUR SEARCH TERMS HERE_” as a way to search only blogs on Google…

  53. Manny

Mitchell showed last night how sparkly he can be… Torts talks about more scoring and yet Wolski who has been healthy for weeks now is still out of the line up. As if taking Mitchell out or any other player from the legion of “stone cold hands” (pick a player from outside top 6) will totally offset the entire team! puh-lease!

  54. oh and Wolski plays LW that everyone thinks we need so badly PLUS he is pretty damn sparkly in Skills Contests himself…

I have no problem discussing classical music with ya, but I have a hint of the thought police that monitors the subject of this blog and can guess at how long it will take to make me feel guilty. So, there’s plenty more hockey to ramble thru and I still wonder why of all folks
whose names have been bandied about Doan’s name keeps appearing. Yeah he’s a good skate and can score now and then, but what makes him so special? So ah, “desirable”?

  60. Yes cause WW is a “difference” maker in the shootout, which by the way we’ve only had what, 4 of them this season? I’d rather see Mitchell…who at least plays a physical game. WW or EC in the lineup and the team goes soft…

  61. Mystery ( to me) I just posted a missive of earth shaking proportions, about the ice condition and it has apparently been sent adrifting somewhere between the
site of the last of the Mohicans, and the resting place of the Titanic. In good company admitted, but still ….a brush off. My oh my.

  65. ILB,

To break down Doan’s game last night at least in a short space, he’s playing what is very much a veteran’s game, trying to pick his spots with his scoring and his hitting.
Exhibit A would be the hit on Cally, where he caught him in a vulnerable spot and tried to lay it down on him. But that was very late in the game, and he hadn’t been recklessly physical earlier, though he certainly was back when we played in Phoenix.

That night he looked like he was auditioning.

He’s putting up a very respectable year, and he would help, he can still score and as a RH’d shot I’m sure would aid our power play, because he was a good trigger man for many years.
But also, to play Torts system you must skate, and, it depends on the deal and what other deals may be out there that’d be better.
And there’s a real question of if he would come east and what his mindset would be.
In that sense alone, I much prefer Iginla (I do in every way anyhow) because he has another year on his deal and he intends to keep playing a long time, and I’m always confident once guys get here, they love it and want to stay.

So, I can’t rule it out, it may be a fallback plan for the front office (there were certain indications it could be). But neither could I tell you with any confidence that a Doan would produce more offensively than even a Hemsky might, if he’s totally healthy, and again, the pricetag is probably cheaper.

  66. @CCCP@ so now you’re on a Wolski tear. Before it was Avery. Do we even have cap space to add Wolski to the team?

  74. Avery’s opinion on Shane Doan:

From The Hockey News, the Players Poll has determined that Sean Avery is the most hated and the most overrated player in hockey. Predictably, Avery embraces the first part… but “overrated”?

But elation soon turns to disbelief when Avery finds out he was also voted the most overrated player, too.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve never really heard anybody say I was good. Did you put candidates on the ballot?”

    No, we did not.

“Then how come Shane Doan wasn’t named most overrated,” Avery continues. “Hey, if I’m going to take shots, I’m going to dish them out, too.”

  75. eddie eddie eddie on

manny – many of my non-posts were actually posts that werent posted…..by not posting i was in effect still posting…just not posting what was posted and therefore not posted…as a result, your posts which werent posted in response were also posts that i posted a response to…..

  76. So, eddie, if I may try to be clear here: you were not posting but posting all the while and i was not posting in response to your not posting posts but all the while posting posts. Therefore, somewhere in the ether’s of a third or possibly 13th dimension there is a list of posts that were not posted but were posted there. Thus, if that dimension is found the non posted posts will become posted as if they were originally posted.

  77. I ‘m not sure how to take that, Eddie!

Speaking of indications, is it curious Wavery mentions Doan, who’s had a pretty terrific career, and whom you rarely hear about, as being overrated? Just as he’s walking out the door?

  78. eddie eddie eddie on

bottom line – if the rangers keep winning, they wont be losing…so its a win-win…or rather a win-not lose scenario…

  79. eddie eddie eddie on

  83. Thanks, Rod…I didn’t think of auditioning part, but my thoughts are similar. Not sure it’s worth whatever they have to give up…Whoever he replaces on their top 6 will produce less than expected now. Not convinced the goal differential will be that much higher. And, yes, Iginla is a different story. But I do have my reservations about Hemsky; will he fit in Tort’s system and type of play?

  84. I dont mind getting attacked Eddie.

But they could at least wait till I was wrong!

Yeah, I’ve noticed their little back and forth Carp.

Thought that was a little too opportunistic on Doan’s part, but even then Cally saw him last second and got an elbow up!

rod – i dont think you or anyone should be attacked – period……i like your insights, always have, and i hope you continue….

  88. Think it depends on the who and how ILB.
There can be a tremendous benefit to ‘bumping’ guys down in the lineup.
I’m thinking specifically of a guy like Hagelin moving to Boyle’s line, but depending on the deal and the incoming player it could be someone else.

Hemsky regularly gets the snot beat out of him in places like this, but if he is close to 100% the guy is a wiz with the puck. He could definitely help.
Thing is, I think in this instance, whoever the player coming is must be an offensive force, or be allowed to be at a minimum.

I’ve never believed every player can or even should be a two-way player, within reason.
It was like the old dilemma they had where they used Niklas Sundstrom as Gretzky’s left wing, the rationale being he was a good defensive forward and would cover them.
Never mind he was a pro who couldn’t elevate the puck and should’ve scored 30 goals playing with Gretz.

My attitude was always, when Gretzky’s line is on the ice, shouldn’t the other team be worried about defense?

  89. Manny

I am not on any tear…ok, BRO? :P

im just sayin’…Torts wants more scoring? Woslki can provide it better than some of the stiffs in the line up right now.

  90. I think Wolski’s chance is long overdue now.

The guy hasn’t stopped working out since the end of last season, had some real untimely and unfortunate luck. Trade-wise though, they might be better off hiding him and moving him off his past value, which wasn’t nothing.

  91. eddie eddie eddie on

this ranger team should not do anything drastic just yet….they are playing incredible hockey and have the kind of depth that will allow them to contend for quite some time, years in fact…….i say hold tight for now….

  92. eddie eddie eddie on

rod – WW could be a big scorer…..he has talented hands…but his heart needs a shot of angst…

  93. Somebody needs to buy Joe Thornton a nice dinner in NY City when he returns. They are 23-6-1 since he called them soft. Jumbo Shrimp cocktail at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. place to start with, perhaps?

  94. I respect opposing viewpoints, they come from a good place.
    But if not now, when?
Is Hank ever going to be more in his prime? Or Gaborik or Richards?
    Or Cally or Girardi?

Us fans can always have rebuilding and organizational depth in mind, and rightly so.
But they can afford a major move without damaging themselves long term, and those guys, that is the heart of the team on the ice right now.

    They deserve the help.

It’s the help Leetch and Richter never fully received after 94, and they barely saw the playoffs again, let alone another Cup. A sin.

  95. its ok to pull Avery outta the line up when the team is playing good…but its not OK to pull anybody else (a stiff at that) and insert a player that can actually score goals when the team is playing as good?

  98. U see Mitchell in the shootout Carp?

And I like the guys, but a few games isn’t going to kill Mitchell or Feds or even Prust, who I worry about health-wise.

They are paying WW over $4m. They could give him a shift….

  99. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

Hi Eddie – Waiting for springtime, so I can “post” my glee over its arrival.

  100. Mitchell’s been good in the shootout in his career, is a better skater than Wolski. I might give Wolski a shot, but if he’s not with the program the way the other forwards play … and I doubt he will be … then he’s Whaled. IMO.

on the other hand, if he changes his soft ways and decides this is the only way he’s going to play (and get another contract), then he could be an asset because of the skill he has over the other guys. I won’t hold my breath waiting for that epiphany.

  101. Wolski had flashes of good play. In fact, he was playing pretty well, and with a lot of jam, the day he hurt his wonky groin. If he can’t play the way this team plays then he can’t play. I gotta agree with Carp that you don’t want to insert a “soft guy” into this lineup. Not now.

  102. eddie eddie eddie on

boom boom – re: the postman rings twice……there was a nice film going around during the scene with nicholson and jessica lange that never made the actual film…when he was on her at the table…the director said cut….and they went at it for quite a bit longer……having seen it……lovely stuff….

  103. It is mentally difficult for Torts to start tinkering with the lineup while they keep winning. Once they hit a bit of a wall (and they to some extent ), we may see some guys sit and WW inserted….

  104. Doodie Machetto on

“why would you want to introduce wolski into a lineup that plays the way this one plays?”

Maybe Wolski catches on about effort. In terms of talent, he’s still probably top 3 among our forwards. Would love to see him actually play hard and maximize it.

  105. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

Maybe the Rangers can convince my boy “Stinko” that he should “post-up” more often.

  107. Doodie Machetto on

But I think he and Christensen both should take that conditioning stint. No way that either of those guys can come into the lineup right now without getting some of the rust out first.

  108. they will to some extent…..

The one from RR: “You are posting too fast”
And from local hockey- NY Islanders: POSTmortem…

  109. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, so its a no-lose proposition. He can play well and be good, or get hurt and we can use the LTIR.

Avery is still here, his “spirit” is mentoring in the locker room.

  111. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

Rupp is jealous of Avery’s spirit – the kids are not crowding around his locker anymore for a quip and a pat on the back, since Ave’s Mentoring Spirit took over the room.

    And, Kathryn Tappen.

  122. you might as well find out about Wolski. right now your top LW are AA, and Dubi, and there are not a whole lot of goals coming from them. maybe Wolski gets hot, and then you don’t have to make the obvious trade for LW who can score.

  123. eddie eddie eddie on

deb placey is much hotter than kathryn tappen…..and even better…i can read deb placey’s lips when sitting to her left at 90 degrees

  124. Carp,
Your assesment of Wolski is spot on. He may have the skills, but does’nt have the Jam Mitchell brings IMO.

  125. Carp,

How about a feature where you can see if there have been any new posts since last time you checked the site? So you do not need to go thru all of the posts just the ones you have not seen since last time. Some other sites do have this feature.

  126. Doodie Machetto on

bull dog, I’m with you. AA hasn’t gotten it done for a little while now. No points in his last 8 games. Gaborik is making that line go all on his own.

  127. Good afternoon all,

Was great to meet ILB, Doodie and Carp last night pre-game! Thanks ILB for inviting me along and setting it up.

    Thoughts/Questions on the game:

    – Rupp must have made that drop pass just inside the blue line 3-4 times last night, not just on the turnover that led to the goal. Only worked once, I think.

    – I don’t think Wolski fits this team’s DNA at all. He’s soft, he has a tendancy to glide when he’s not “on,” and to echo Carp, I think why mess with the incredible chemistry right now?

    – What would it take to pry a Shane Doan from Phoenix? Would you need an NHL ready player (i.e. Sauer) or can you get away with prospects/picks?

    – Anyone notice how McD continually darts in and out of open space in the offensive zone when the Rangers have sustained pressure? Must have been 3-4 times where McD had a shot in the slot or set up a chance because he was darting below the top of the circles to get involved in the offense. How did we ever get the guy!?!

    – Also, not sure if there were mikes in the goal posts last night but the ‘yotes hit iron flush at least twice last night.

  128. Doodie Machetto on

They’re also doing the franchise a disservice by not featuring Wolski as trade bait.

  129. if you put Wolski in, and take out Mitchell, you can move AA back to his natural spot, center. you would have Richards, Stepan, AA, and Boyle down the middle. you could roll 4 lines more often, which I know some posters have wanted for a while now.

  130. eddie eddie eddie on

Re: Gas line…i wish step would stop the obsequious treatment with gabby….i cannot count how many times step prefers to pass when he has a shot..in fact, .i am surprised that step didnt try a drop pass to gabby during last night’s SO

  131. Nice meeting you too, Evan..

I believe Montreal got great first line center/set up man back in that trade….

  132. eddie eddie eddie on

rolling 4 lines is the smart thing to do………keeps everyone involved and fresh legs come the playoffs, also, when everyone is contributing……the room has to be a happier place

  133. I think AA works on the GAS line though because he’s willing to battle in the corners in addition to his skill…I’m not sure replacing Wolski there helps because Gabby needs two guys who are willing to work below the goal line to make plays (in addition to being able to lead a rush).

Granted AA is pointless over the last couple of weeks so a change my help but I’m not sure Wolski’s the guy.

  134. billybleedsblue on

Lunch: Salmon salad finger sandwiches with cardamom and anise spiced coffee.

The way the Rangers play, what with all of the blocking and whatnot, maybe it’s not such a bad thing to have WW around, even though he may not be playing at all…

  135. eddie eddie eddie on

lunch -…sauteed vegetables, onions, red, yellow, orange peppers, carrots, zucchini iin olive oil……then a red curry sauce (from trader joe’s) with basil ……this cooked over low flame….20 minutes or so……then cod/white fish added……served over jasmine rice

  137. Solid game last night. Tough game, but they found a way to win. I thought Smith outplayed Lundqvist (that isn’t to say Henke was bad, he was outstanding), but the Rangers deserved to win it.

As for the WW talk, the guy would add more offense. He’s very creative and can hold the puck down low (unlike EC, who has skills but has no idea how to use them). The issue is that nobody has really played their way out of the lineup. Mitchell isn’t the greatest, but he works hard, blocks shots, and plays solid defensive hockey. Wolski doesn’t do those things as well, but he scores more and sets people up a lot better.

So it all matters what Torts thinks he needs against his opponent that night.

  138. I’m going to have to give a lecture to med students for (or instead of ?) lunch….
    Lunch points, Latona?

  141. Ediie,
right on about Stepan deferring to Gabby. teams are now playing him to pass, and often breaking the play up.

  142. eddie eddie eddie on

bull dog….there have been a few plays where step is in all alone and yet he looks to pass…driving me crazy….

  143. eddie eddie eddie on

we said our goodbyes….the night before….love was in your eyes, the night before…..now today i find, you would change your mind………treat me like you did the night before……were you telling lies the night before, was i so unwise the night before, when i held you near, you were so sincere…… last night is the night…i will remember you by…..when i think of things we did, makes me want to CRYYYYYYYY

  144. billybleedsblue on

Rats… I wanna hang and chat but I gotta take care of something for a little while…

    See youse laters!

  145. Doodie Machetto on

bull dog and eddie, I said the same thing to my brother last night at the game. Step refuses to shoot. Always looking pass to Gabby.

  146. Evan, loved you comments on McDonough! HOW DID WE GET THAT GUY!

I keep saying this cause I believe it to be true with every passing game that we get to see Ryan play.

The Gomez trade might very well turn out to be the greatest trade (THEFT!) in NY Ranger history.

gotta love Mac Truck as Girardi called him in the clip where he announced the starting line-up at the winter classic.

  147. I wish I wasn’t so busy at work today. Seems like we are having a lot of fun!

Let me add this about Wolski : Woof Woof…Bow Wow

You want secondary scoring? Bring up Zuccarella when he’s ready. He’s hungry, he’s got world class skill, and he’s got JAM! Can’t teach that….

  148. Boom Boom Bathgate / "Sloppy Firsts" on

“I wouldn’t marry any woman who would have me for a husband.” Karl Marx.

  149. Zuccarello is too small for the NHL though. Wolski is 6’3″ 200 pounds. He can hold the puck for awhile, is good around the net, and can be very effective in the cycle.

The only thing you give up with WW as I said is the defensive aspect of the game. He isn’t going to dive to block shots like a guy like Mitchell and won’t be throwing huge hits on the forecheck (which is fine since he usually hits enough to take a guy out of the play, we don’t need big hits).

He definitely deserves to get in the lineup at some point since he’s too talented offensively to just let rot in the press box. But he’ll definitely have his frustrating moments.

  150. That shootout last night was painful to watch. Maybe we do need EC in the line up. Or Torts needs to command one deke only. Hit the byfuglien’ing net.

  151. That extra pass by Stepan in close in the Winter Classic is the best example of him over-passing. …

… and that shot last night in the breakaway contest is the best example of why he should shoot more.

  152. This is after carefully examining many mathematical factors, such as, the Fibonacci quotient and CORSI analysis. I can’t watch the games because I have Time Warner Cable. /sarc

  153. Jonny, if he doesn’t play the way the other guys play, then he’d better score A LOT. or he won’t be playing for long.

  154. Carp I agree. I think he just needs to work hard. I mean Gaby doesn’t go around blocking shots like crazy because that’s just not his game. But he’s been hitting, skating, working hard, and scoring. If Wolski just works hard defensively by backchecking and just at least putting pressure on guys at the point that are shooting, it’ll be ok if he scores goals or at least sets them up.

If he doesn’t, then he wouldn’t deserve to be on the ice. I think he gets it though, just based on what he’s said and how Torts talks about him lately.

  155. WW does have a lot of dog in him, but he is also one of the three Ranger forwards who have scored 65+ points in a season (Wojo did it in 09-10). He might better suited as trade bait given that his contract is up at the end of the year. The Rangers would need to find a player whose salary is in the $3-4 million neighborhood and whose contract is up after next season (don’t want to get involved in a long-term contract). The Rangers have enough organizational depth to make it worth it to a team. The key is to find such a player. Anyone have any ideas?

Would love to have Doan because he would a real asset come the playoffs, but would Donnie dare deal his captain and Coyotes/Jets lifer?

  156. Ok so scoring is still a problem, PP is still an issue and it’s going to catch up when Bruins come up, redwings, Philly. Tams will take liberties because they wont be afraid of the PP. when Dubi went to the dressing room I said the window just closed on trying to get something for him because he needs to be part of a package for Bobby Ryan. We need some more help upfront because we can’t keep saying that Torts was right 3 &4 th line scoring will help, it’s going to have to come from top 6 forwards and the PP. Dubi, Sauer, WW or AA and a 1st end pick for Bobby Ryan.
