From the last graph, you can see why they’d want one of these in the D.C. area, which speculation has happening in 2014.
From NBC Sports:
3.74 MILLION VIEWERS WATCH 2012 BRIDGESTONE NHL WINTER CLASSIC
2012 Winter Classic up two percent vs. last afternoon Winter Classic
Five of six most-watched NHL regular-season games in past 37 years are Winter Classics
NEW YORK—January 3, 2012—The NHL Winter Classic continues to demonstrate its success as it has now produced five of the six most-watched NHL regular-season games in the past 37 years. Yesterday’s 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers from Citizen’s Bank Park averaged 3.74 million viewers, according to fast national data provided by Nielsen Media Research, making it the fifth-most watched regular-season NHL game since 1975.
Viewership for the game was up two percent compared to the last NHL Winter Classic played in the afternoon, the 2010 contest played on New Year’s Day at Fenway Park between the Boston Bruins and Flyers, which was watched by 3.68 million.
This year’s game was played on Monday, Jan. 2 due to New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday. The previous four Winter Classics were all played on Jan. 1. Yesterday’s game also had a delayed start time of 3 p.m. ET, which was announced the day before the game, due to weather conditions related to player safety. The start time had originally been scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
Last year’s Winter Classic, broadcast on New Year’s Day in primetime from Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and featuring two of the NHL’s most popular players in Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals), was the most-watched NHL regular-season game in 36 years with 4.5 million viewers.

Yesterday’s game produced a 2.1 rating and 4 share equaling the last Winter Classic played during the afternoon (2010 – 2.1/4). Last year’s primetime game generated a 2.3 rating and 4 share. The rating for this year’s contest built every half hour from 5 pm ET until the conclusion of the game, peaking at a 2.7 for the final segment (6-6:08 p.m. ET).
Philadelphia led all markets with an 11.9/21 rating, almost doubling the 6.0/11 rating the market produced for the 2010 game when the Flyers were the visitors against the Bruins at Fenway Park.
New York posted a 4.3/9 rating, up 65 percent versus the 2.6/6 average for the market for the four previous Winter Classics, none of which involved a New York team.

silver?
Milbury just went off on Totter. What a piece of carcillo
And Kathryn Tappen?
Sorry getting used to my fire…that would be Torts
Does Katheryn Tappen count as 1 of the 3.7 million?
>>And Kathryn Tappen?
Where? Is she on?
I watched. My wife was in the room, but she was on her laptop. She might have looked up every now and then. Does she count as one of the 3.74 million?
LOL @ all the Tappen references. Nice job, guys.
And great review Carp! You pretty much said what I was thinking all day yesterday about the game and the coverage.
I can’t wait for 24/7 this week, but alas will have to find a link online or watch when I get back to STL since no HBO in NY.
Mike Francesa’s interview with Hank doesn’t hold a candle to Kathryn Tappen’s interview with B. Rich’ from a few months ago: http://network.yardbarker.com/nhl/article_external/video_brad_richards_interviewed_by_kathryn_tappen_of_nhl_network/7716025
I DVR’d the game and watched it 6 hours after it ended, do I count as 1 of the 3.74 million?
who?
Kathryn Tappen
3.8 million Jan. 27, 1996 FOX Six-game regional coverage
Remember when FOX did hockey? That was awesome!!! When it’s good, people watch!!
First base, Carp
Joe Mich is doing color on VS or whatever the hell it is now…Kathryn Tappen
Was Katheryn Tappen on Fox or is she A fox?
AND lol, I just googled “kathryn tappen rangers” (I’m not sure why anyone would ever google that phrase but) and a certain RR came up at the top of the results lol. This may be because google ‘knows’ my habits, but I thought it was funny nonetheless :D
TBLightning Tampa Bay Lightning
Steven Stamkos ties is at 2 with 8:05 remaining in the period- his league leading 27th goal. Assist St. Louis.
Kathryn Tappen that aasen!
Milbury being critical of Tortorella and championing the “integrity of the game” was surely just a subversive yet finely nuanced and subtle send up of the irony of Scott Hartnell preaching respect yesterday, by such a remarkable practitioner of this brand of deep satire.
Or he’s being a monumental asshat. One of the two…
Milbury getting on Torts for integrity of the game. Really? Really? Cmon Mike. We only have to look back 2 weeks ago when NBC lead studio analyst was assaulting a 12 yr old at a local hockey rink.
Dore,
A fox with a high hockey IQ to boot!
Tappen Zee Assen?
Mike Milbury…..Mr. Integrity
She has to dump that Leach and hook up with a real Leetch!!
LW – I’m going with the monumental asshat
Oh and Carp, what you wrote about the band? My Dad, who is NOT a hockey fan at all, happened to walk into the room when they were playing and said ‘wtb is that racket??!’. Pretty priceless. And I happen to think that my Dad is closer in age to you than he is to me, plus he’s all excited that Gunsmoke and Rawhide are on this newfangled MeTV station, so takt that for what it’s worth. LOL.
>>LOL @ all the Tappen references. Nice job, guys.
Tappen should be made a new verb. We just need a good definition for it now.
..any relation to Gustav Dore – great french engraver?
Just wondering what would happen to journalists and reporters who take the commercialism out of major sports events references, such as just saying or writing “Winter Classic” instead of “Bridgestone Winter Classic,” or “Fiesta Bowl” instead of “Tostidos Fiesta Bowl, or, a few years back “The Forum,” instead of “The Great Western Forum,” the one, thanks to Dr. Jerry Buss, which started this tidal wave of commericial overkill.
Plus you can’t even follow a ballgame anymore without the “This call to the bullpen brought to you by ….” “The seventh inning stretch is brought to you by….” “The out of town scoreboard is brought to you by…”
So what happens if you don’t fall in line – you lose your job? Your publication is sued by Bridgestone Tires? Your wife divorces you and takes the kids?
I mean, I know we are supposed to suffer the Geico, Kars For Kids, Auto Zone and Office Depot commercials about 1500 times per year, each, but dam, there is a tolerance limit for being inundated by this crap.
Frankly, I have had enough of being constantly battered by the droning used car salesman patter of these basher advertisers. They seem to think that the more “impressions” they make on us, the more responsive we will be toward patronizing their products. How incredibly wrong can they be?
And Tappen – a fox with a high hockey IQ and married to a leach. One in 3.74 million
BRich was there for the Tappen to win the WC.
Not that I know of
I think Carp should start calling this “Rangers Report” brought to you by And Tappen
>>Just wondering what would -
happen- to journalists and reporters…Um, I think you misspelled Tappen.
Dore you forgot “what in Holy Hell”
sorry : (
It kind of bothers me that Philly a city less then a quarter the size of New York had more then double the viewers. If this reads right their were more people in Boston, Buffalo and Pittsburgh watching a NEW YORK RANGERS game, then actual Ranger fans in here in New York. Am I crazy for being totally disappointed?
Too much going on in NY to sit inside and watch a Hockey game. Decent weather. If it was in NYC I bet it would blow the doors off all the other games.
Boom Boom, they would get fired. The nets make a TON of money off those sponsorships. As do the teams. It’s just the world we live in these days, sadly.
It was a celebration of Philadelphia, NYC. Can’t blame New Yorkers for that….
I think a number of Rangers fans were either A) at the game or 2) watching at a party/watering hole where the exact numbers aren’t counted by Nielsen or C) out and about since it was a day off for a lot of people.
great flyers-other team review carp!! u have been spot on about alot o things with the team especially when we all panicked at the start of the season. dont ever leave us man!
Just watched the Carcillo hit on Gilbert. You know you are dealing with a special individual when the first thing the Blackhawks announcer says as he’s watching it is “That’ll be a suspension”.
Carp, with all the assenclownery going on around here the last couple days, the best line to me is still “Philadelphia—the city so nice they named it once.”
Hhahahahaa, that’s brilliant!
And now back to our regularly scheduled Kathryn Tappen…
Anybody ever watch “Half-Ton Teen”?? LOL! WOW! That’s all I have to say!
DITTO!! to BBB
Orr – never saw half ton teen but dont tell me that And Katheryn Tappen is\was on it!
Oh no, Kathryn Tappin isn’t on that show. She wouldn’t be anywhere near that show unless she was interviewing Broduer’s son who takes after his father.
LOL!!!
Just watching some of the Hyper Bowl again….
Oh yeah, and Carp nailed it earlier, last night was Dubinsky’s best game of the season. He was a beast. He was directly responsible for the Richards goal. It was his hard play that forced the icing and faceoff in the Filthy zone (the NBC coverage is so bad that you don’t see who wins the faceoff)...eventually the puck makes its way to Girardi…he makes the sick pinch and makes the pass to Cally…Cally to Dubi….Dubi to Richie….3-2
(Btw, I downloaded the game….and I didn’t pay for it)
Illegal
Kathyrn Tappen = non beast
anyone else watching canadia/russia wjc?
sorry if this gets long
just heard news earlier tonight that my uncle
(and jpg’s sister’s uncle)
who has “cancer” is getting the
“just make him comfortable”
prognosis.
kind of shocked, not shocked by this
don’t give much of a carcillo for myself here
but feel terribly awful for my dad
who is very close to his younger brother
and is already upset about his older
brother being put in a nursing home a few months ago
when he (and my aunt) could have lived in a
brand new home with 24 hour nurse but one daughter
“outvoted” others
so, no offense to all here, but i’d rather go for a miracle
with my uncle right now than a sip from Stanley’s silver chalice
this year
thanks for listening. don’t know why i blabbed
just getting things off my chest, i guess.
Is Kathryn Tappen a true professional? Hard to say!
The one notable from Hank’s FAN interview was him saying when the penalty shot call was made, first, he freaked out for second.
>>>Kathryn Tappen that aasen!
I wish!!! ;-D
Carp, great writeups of the game action, and your feelings about the whole spectacle.
I’ll tell you this – if I was an owner or GM of a team, I would NOT agree to participate in any future Winter Classic game unless it was held in my team’s hometown – and I dearly hope that the “brain trust” of the Rangers tells Bettman in no uncertain terms that we don’t play second fiddle to any other team again – if you want us in the game, work it out so it will be played in New York City, or go ask somebody else.
Who’s Katie Tappen?
Oooo man….I’m sorry, jpg. Hang in there, bud…
jpg, our prayers and condolences go out to your family – it’s a very tough thing to go through. We went through it with my gf’s mom some years ago.
thats right Jimbo we are nobody’s sloppy seconds!
sorry jpg, life is full of stormy weather…
good luck, jpg. thoughts and prayers are with you.
Boom, I try to not use the corporate names ever. Especially names of arenas. Never been fired yet. They’re paying somebody to sponsor, but they’re not paying my employer, and they sure as hell ain’t paying me to say it or write it. Many years ago, our annual PGA tournament was the Westchester Classic, then a bunch of sponsors put their name in front of it, and yet everybody (especially me) continued to call it the Westchester Classic or just the Classic. Finally, a sponsor took the word Classic completely out of the name.
NYC, did you see how the N.Y. papers treated the Winter Classic? It was buried inside.
Hang in there jpg!
Carp
there is something at the very end of the last thread that really stinks and you may want to throw it out!!
thanks, billy. I enjoyed that one myself.
I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more comments mocking the Empire State Building fiasco with me.
jpg and sis
best of luck and wishes to you guys and your fam!
Wishing you find some peace in this hectic time, jpg.
thx. wick.
Carp
no worries, least I could do. It’s tough having puppies when they have accidents on the floor!
Can you guys believe what that piece of carcillo Talbot tried to do yesterday? Fuggin’ cheap shot artist…
He went airborne right into Girardi, a good 3 feet off ice! Good thing Girardi ducked! Bwaha!! Talbot went straight into boards…
Wicky I’ve got an old pup who constantly has accidents on the floor…lol
staal
those are the worst!! LOL
jpg and sis, I’m so sorry to hear that. All my prayers to you and your family at this time. I know what that is like, sad to say. (hugs for you both)
I absolutely love the hit Gaby makes on Briere! Awesome! Lays him out flat on the ice…
I can’t wait until Gaby beats the snot out of Kopecky on Thursday….
just looking at the standings…pretty amazing to me that we are the only team in the league with under 10 losses…pretty sweet…yeah Torts doesn’t know what he’s doing…L-O-freakin-L!
Gaborik’s had some pretty solid hits this year. And he was really good yesterday.
Gaborik’s a pretty physical player; not implying that he looks for a big hit every shift, but he certainly doesn’t shy away from contact that often.
Philly fans were ok yesterday a huge surprise, probably because a lot of first timers there. Gabby was real good, not mentioned much. Needed to replace the Roots with George Thorogood, nobody was into them. How about the Kate Smith tribute i vommited in my mouth, that old bat looked dead when she was alive. Hartnell doesn’t compare to Boobie Clarke as a scumbag, but he’s trying and Milbury is clearly a complete jackwagon and a trainwreck waiting to happen, be patient Ranger fans. Need everybody healthy and a top 6 forward and we could be scary. bTW we are really in the Flyers heads and I think Hank gets in other teams heads this yr. And it really shows when we get a lead. Nice. Lots of Blue in Sec 112 PRICELESS IN PHILADELPHIA
Sorry Carp u just gave Gabby a rightful shoutout. Great work lately much appreciated
>>>thats right Jimbo we are nobody’s sloppy seconds!
Absolutely not!! It made me sick how they were waxing poetic about the Broad Street Bullies team of the 70’s in the intermission shows – if that team were playing today, NBC would probably refuse to carry their games…oh, wait! They own the team! Nevermind!
Bob Clarke, a role model….? For who? – axe murderers!?
The New York Rangers have been around since 1926 – and they’ve won four Stanley Cups, and had near-misses a few times in those years also. Philly won two cups in succession by physically beating the daylights out of the rest of the league – how valiant! They only won two cups with that thug team, and nothing since that thug team fell apart.
You tell ‘em, Jimbo!
Sorry to hear that, jpg/jpg sis. My step-mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago. Stage 4, or something. She’s doing pretty good now though.
I’m pretty sure the two “C’s” in cancer stand for Carcillo and Cooke. Probably the “R” is Rutuu. I don’t know aboot the other letters. Any ideas?
I just did, Latona!! ;-)
Dammit! Fishsticks won again tonight in OT vs. Carolina….
Way before my time, but I went back and read about the Summit Series in the 70s….can’t believe what I learned about the piece of clarke Bobby Clarke….
“If I hadn’t learned to lay on a two-hander once in a while, I’d never have left Flin Flon.” In defending his two-handed ankle-breaking slash to the Soviet’s top player, Valeri Kharlamov .
I hate Philly….
@Martakrupa: I watched it last night! Amazinggggg! RT @WojtekWolski86: Just saw the american version of the girl with the dragon tattoo. Its even better than the swedish one. Best movie #ThisYear
AHA! That’s why Marta Krupa is a Rangers fan. She’s dating Wolski! If Wolski doesn’t play his best hockey, than I don’t know what else can motivate him!
Although, maybe dating her fuggs with his head, because her sister is even hotter. Lucky guy!
Top ten flyer scum
1. Boobie Clarke
2. Ed Snider
3. Ken Linesman
4. Dave Schultz
5. Dave Brown
6. Behn Wilson
7. Scott Hartnell
8. Mel Bridgeman
9. Ron Hextall
10.Gene Hart
What do u think Carp? Lots of HM also
Clarke was a real piece of carcillo – and without his deadly stick, which he used like a scalpel or a tomahawk legitimat(and a team full of goons to protect him if any opposing player wanted to have a legitimate go at him with fists) he was a real rotten skunk.
Drop the “legitimat” after tomahawk above…..
Jimbo,
With the Fishsticks winning, I guess there’s a first time for everything…
NYR,
And then he goes on NBC and says he doesn’t regret it! Byfuglien piece of carcillo.
Actually, I should say “supposively” Wolski is dating M.Krupa!
Latona, it was a disgrace and all Rangers fans should hate Philly more after that display on NBC…
nice list Hedberg
Not like I was around yet, but, Kharlamov was never the same after Clarke chopped him down, and it was really disturbing to see that story covered during yesterday’s game as if Clarke was some kind of hero. Granted, at the time, it was a very Cold War with a big “Us vs. Them” sentiment, but seriously folks, it was an exhibition!
Eh, enough said, we all know what’s good around here. That doesn’t change the fact that I couldn’t believe how they portrayed the whole thing. Shame on you NBC!
Good for Wolski! Just hope he doesn’t pop the question…
Exactly! Just give her some kielbasa. No need to get clingy. Also make sure to use a
visorcondom, so she doesn’t get knocked up!Kharlamov was an excellent hockey player – if he wanted to (and was allowed to), he could have come to North America and he would have been a star player in the NHL. Loads of speed, a great shot, and a real nose for hitting the net.
I wasn’t fans of them at the time, anything but – but that Soviet team was really a powerhouse. And they had Tretiak in net!
“Visor” – hahahaha!
Ease up a bit there, Voice. thanks.
Hedberg, Schultz has to be No. 2 or 3. There’s a video of him beating up Brad Park—a Hall of Famer, who was pretty tough—and Schultz kept hammering him while Park was down being held by the linesmen. He always fought guys who didn’t want to fight him. Forced them to defend themselves. was a real piece of steaming carcillo.
And, sad to say, I’ve gotten to know Dave Brown since he retired and there couldn’t be a more gentlemanly, courteous, respectful, friendly, soft-spoken guy. Shocking, because he was absolute mayhem as a player.
I know I’ve told this story before:
Back in the 1980s, the night that President Reagan was shot, the Flyers were playing at the Garden. The starters were on the blue lines for the anthem when the P.A. guy asked everybody to stand for a moment of silent prayer for the president.
And during the silence, a guy in the blue seats with leather lungs hollered: “They shoulda shot you Clarke!”
LMAO.
Sorry, Carp. I was stiffening up a little too much! Now easing up!!
Carp, that’s great!
Great story, Carp! And they should have!
Hahaha! Great story, Carp!
Carp, you may have told that one before (“They shoulda shot you Clarke!”), but this was the first time I read it—very funny stuff indeed!
Those are the kind of fans that I used to sit with up in the blues, Carp – I had no idea that humans (without electronic amplification) could shout so loudly…
Just saw on Jimmie Fallon info for tonight’s shoe that Sean Avery is going to be on the show and it is a new show.
should have said, Sean Avery on Jimmy Fallon show tonight
Wishing you find some peace in this hectic time, jpg’s sister.
The Wavery P.R. Tour continues…..
Brooks can put out the press release tomorrow, recap it for everyone.
Irresponsibly use his postion to try and convince people it was all Torts’ fault,
just like he’s been trying to do (except that record is looming large now, isn’t it Larry?).
God go away already.
Wow! The first AHL player to appear on a late night talk show. Such an accomplishment.
Canada loses to Russia 6-5. No Gold medal for them! Bwahaha!
Word is Avery backed out of Fallon tonight. They’ll have some comedian as the 2nd guest to replace him. No way he would have appeared after being waived. I’m just surprised they didn’t try to replace him with Hank or something (less controversial, but still a good NBC tie-in to the Winter Class for SYNERGY!)
(I should have noted that Fallon’s show’s web site was confirmation – no sign of Avery anywhere in the episode guide for tonight)
Makes sense. He probably doesn’t want to be called “former NHL player, Sean Avery” be Fallon introduces him.
- be
+ when
In other news, Voros signed another PTO today! Yeah!!
LOL! He’s just going to keep signing tryout contracts with the Rangers!!
Another? What’s he trying out for now?
thanks for all of the kind thoughts concerning my Uncle/Godfather and jpg’s Uncle we appreciate, you guys are the best
Congrats team Russia on advancing to the WJC gold medal game! Epic ending!
Russia Champion! :)
From SNY:
“It appears that the Connecticut Whale has re-signed forward Aaron Voros to his second Professional Tryout (PTO) agreement this season. Voros, 30, has played in 15 games with the Whale already, scoring twice and assisting three times. He has collected 17 penalty-minutes, a minus-7 rating, and 15 shots on goal. The former New York Rangers forward was placed on a line with newcomer, and long-time friend, Sean Avery and rookie Ryan Bourque when they Whale lost to the Portland Pirates on Monday. His line played with a lot of energy, and was very aggressive on the puck.
Voros played well for the Whale in December, and could earn an AHL contract (Standard Player Contract (SPC)) when this PTO expires before the end of the month. His physical play and size is something that the Whale could use on their current roster, and those assets have made him an important player on the team.
If there is an NHL club that would like to sign him, possibly the Rangers’ (there are no signs of interest, though), then Voros may sign a deal, even if he eventually signs a SPC with the Whale. His performances over the next couple of weeks will likely determine where he signs.”
NYR-Fan what is SPC contract? So Voros & Avery will be on CT Whale together?
jpg’s sis – yeah! They have already played together for a game on the same line!
RC: still calls the whatever center the Hartford Meadows and the XXL center the Civic Center!
No Sean Avery wasn’t on Jimmy Fallon. Info on TW cable was wrong
NYR-fan, I saw Voros at W77 and Sean A. there after 2nd Pearl Jam show. Didn’t they go on vaction with Brad Richards before Rangers signed him?
Saw Seanny boy at Jones Beach for Phish once. He was with some retired B-list goon (damnit it’s going to kill me that I cannot remember who) wasted telling everyone he was his limo driver.
and now that he’s no longer a Ranger I felt it was safe to post on this board. probably does a lot of ellis dee!
since nobody else is posting i have a confession to make.
i moved out to the west coast 6 months ago. in that time i have taken up the LA Kings as my “other team”. know this: i watch ever Rangers game I can and bleed Ranger blue. well i would if i could but you know what i mean!
Furthermore: i’ve liked the Kings for many years even after Gretzky’s departure. Deadmarsh, Pallfy, even that Jason Alison kid! and they rarely ever play the Rangers.
Got a Dustin Brown shirt for Xmas as well (a present to myself).
Henceforth that is my confession. i hope it’s okay. that is all.
moreover: my supposed circling of the bandwagon can in no way be related to the fact that San Jose is no longer the powerhouse it once was and Anaheim’s struggles as i have no love for either team. I simply had no other teams to choose from.
so there you have it. i’ve come clean wearing my heart on my sleeve. take it for what it’s worth. BUT I ADMIT IT I’M A FRAUD!!!!!1111
FWIW i like to refer to myself as a closet kings fan when confronted
just checking in one last time before going to sleep, noonan, at least you are a true blue knowledgeable fan, I know some people who attend Kings games just to see celebrities there. Good Night, good luck in the west, big change, I would think
thanks jpg means a lot! it’s not easy getting adjusted out here but the summer will help.
i read something about you going through a crisis but my internet has been down. in cases where things are out of control all we can do is be there for our family and have hope. because without hope we have nothing. no matter how stacked the deck is against you be strong and don’t give up because we are all we got!
I’m not a religious man but I’ve gotten more spiritual in recent times. This prayer has helped me get through a lot in my struggles:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Peace, jpg have a good night. You’ll be in my prayers
