It’s Go Time!

Happy Festivus!!!!!

“And at the Festivus dinner, you gather your family around and you tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year. …

“I got a lot of problems with you people.”

–Frank Costanza

Game 33. Ya boys on a three-game winning streak. Obviously, this is a Winter Classic preview and is probably going to take up most, if not all, of the hour-long “24/7” on HBO Wednesday.

Same lineup, with Henrik Lundqvist back in goal, which means Sean Avery and Erik Christensen are prucha’d.

Jaromir Jagr makes his Garden return, I would guess to a warm reception at first, and booing later. He is a Flyer, after all.

  16. HageLinCalPruStepanlahan on

Carpy, am i no allowed to post a link to the game? Tried twice and it’s not showing up

  17. Yeah, that intensity in the lower bowl that the architect always talks about in those MSG renovation promos … he must have been smoking something.

  18. How does Rinaldo not get called for roughing Erixon by rubbing his glove in his face for about 5 seconds???

  19. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Why don’t they squeeze a little hockey in between the commericial glut?

  20. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Could some Ranger put the first shot on goal, please? This team looks exhausted. Thanks NHL.

  21. good that Prust nailed that bugger. I hate these cowards with shields on fighting a guy without one.

  22. Any player initiating a fight with a visor should be game misconduct. It’s byfuglien retarded.

  23. YorktownRanger on

My son-in-law sought of kind of looks like Prust. I guess that’s his only redeeming factor. Are we still within the win-window with fights in the first period?

  24. Stralman getting comfy with that shot. Keep it up. Del Zotto starting to fire as well. Rangers were plenty physical in that period and did a great job of protecting the front of the net. No easy looks.

  25. I thought it was a pretty good period, very physical, pretty well played.

Do you think Aves would have let up on the guy after breaking his face, like Prust did?

  26. One thing I notice from this coach. They protect the points. They keep the forwards high and don’t let the other team’s d to take long shots that can be deflected for cheap goals.

  27. YorktownRanger on

OMG, hate the network blackout being out of town. You all complain about MSG, but those of us out of town are left to the devices of non-hockey fluent broadcasters.

    Sorry for my whining :-{

  28. I loved that indecisive play by Dubinsky at the end of the period. The one where he skated into Stralman and the picked up the loose puck and didnt know whether to skate with it or pass it off.

Just kinda floated there with it.

  29. Al Trautwig sure has a weird way ending interviews…

    “You like to play physical?”

    “Ok, thanks, bye.”

  30. Seems like some Flyers fans got a bit pissy at the Daily News beat writer calling Rinaldo a goon in a tweet.

Leads the league in PIMS, has one goal and plays six minutes a game. Last year had nine points and 331 PIMS in the AHL. Averages around 8 goals and 200 PIMS a season across his junior and pro career.

    Future All-Star, no doubt.

  31. Very intense game between two evenly matched, high level team. Well played, I thought. Don’t expect pond hockey, folks. First time in long time I can feel we can match them. I liked the period.

  32. YorktownRanger on

Yes I am. One of the best investments I made was my Apple TV. 20 bucks a month vs 40 for center ice. But then I have the dreaded NHL Network blackout. These guys don’t need to be doing NHL commentary…

    Again, I whine…

  33. LMAO, LW. He also wanted nothing to do with Rupp.. Barry, glad you’re finally enjoying Dubinsky’s play.

  34. hm, the Flyers were able to offer Jagr the most money after they traded Mike Richards and Jeff Carter away…thats how business going in the nhl…

  35. Olga, it’s kinda early….I’m not getting a feeling yet..I think Hagelin will get a goal tonight, though…

  36. I hope it will be not same as against the Dallas Stars when they played to a scoreless tie for 55 minutes and then lost 1-0

  37. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Happy to see Fedostinko has the least playing time of any Ranger, so far tonight. Hey, Torts gets it!

  38. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

This team cannot affort to botch PP opportunities – unless, Dubi pots a couple more e.s. goals, tonight.

  41. sestito looks like freekin’ goon
    typical flyer
sad that it’s a residue of clarke’s carcillo era

  42. Before everyone picks on that Boyle fight it was at the end of a very long shift and it didn’t look like he had much legs left.

  43. Boyle shades or Colton Orr wow he wanted out as soon as it started and that’s not. Why I hate him it’s a minute earlier when he can hit the net from 6 ft out. He is baaad

  44. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Now if this club could cash a PP ticket and send the Cryers home.

  45. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Interesting that the Rangers E.S. efficiency is heating up at the same time the PP is cooling down.

  46. HageLinCalPruStepanlahan on

lmao ‘jody shelley couldn’t come up with that puck”

    wow,there’s a headline

  47. wifi on plane yes carp but i already asked for my money back. no bandwidth.

    so I gather we scored?

    thanks for the updates all.

    Have a Merry Christmas everybody.

    Go Rangers

  48. Stu!

remember all those”Now we win the cup!” jokes over the summer after the trade where we got Bickle? hmmmmmmm

  49. If only they had a coaching staff that could improve their defense as they keep bringing new ones in. :)

  50. Bickel is going to be a phenom. Better in the NHL than the AHL. Bring it. It’s done. Retire his number. Hang it in the rafters.

  51. Love how MDZ can hit the puck with a blind backhand over the shoulder then swing and miss with a basic clear on thr ice right after it.

  52. Hagelin never eases up, not even a second left on the clock and hes going 100%. He needs to get his real number so i can buy that jersey already

  53. I don’t guys what you see. But I hope I’m not overreacting, but I’ll tell you what I see. I see two elite teams ( and I wasnt able to say that for years!) playing a high level, even, intense, physical, playof type game. One team has a much better goaltending and it’s up 2-0.

  54. Al with one of his better comments about Wisconsin. Kudos to Mike Eaves. Won a Gold with team USA with Stepan and coached both mcdonagh and stepan amongst others.

  55. I think I just figured it out. Boyle thought he had to wrestle Sestito as part of the feats of strength. Sestito said, “This isn’t over til you pin me.”

  56. For those of you calling Stu Bickel “pickle” please know that Marc Edoaurd Vlasic is already nicknamed “pickle.” We have to come up with a better nickname for Bickel.

  57. Since Eric doesn’t seem to be around, let me say that this has all the signs of a third period letdown and a shootout winner scored by Jagr. Or Rinaldo. Plus every other game in the East will be a three point game. Out of the playoff picture by the All-Star break.

  58. Thank you BANJ! That is perfect.

Stu Bickel is “one stiff cucumber”

I guess we could call Bickel a type of pickle. I would suggest, “Bread and Butter” or “Half Sour”

  59. There’s your girl, ORR – with the Orgy Wonderland – you’ve gotta feed her a lot of Boston Creme donuts….

  60. Wrong, LW. Fighting for the 8th spot last week of the season. And you leave Eric alone. You have no idea what it’s like to change 25 diapers a day.

  61. I know what Torts is drawing on the white board right now as a part of third period strategy. @STIFF@

  62. what a much better 2nd period by the Rangers…Step´s hand-eye- is cosmic as well as the one by Feds….

  63. Oh guys. I meant to tell you this before. I played basketball today at the Brooklyn YMCA. I felt exactly like Christensen. I was really good at shooting around before the game. Then I got picked up by a team and basically was a ghost for the entire game. I got one rebound and was promptly slapped in the face by my own teammate and then my arm was wrenched as someone grabbed the ball from me. Obviously not a foul.

    Just like Christensen

  64. remember Torts, the should be fired coach, harping on the lack of deflection goals earlier in the season? i guess he’s had them practice that. terrible coaching.

  65. Great tweet by that person on MSG! JJ, Ken Gernander and Pat Boller deserve loads of credit for their work with McD last year and now Hagelin, Bickel, Erixon etc.

  66. Lube Stick must be way up on that ESPN Production Index, or whatever Lloyd kept referring to. Even above He Who Shall Not Be Claimed.

  67. You know this team must really hate the coach. They don’t wanna play stiff and get to the net or anything against these Flyers. HAHA!

  68. maybe that could be the theme song
    played over the p.a.
the Rolling Stones “Start Me Up”
and the crowd could just yell out
    “Stiff Me Up”
    when the line comes on

  69. ilb, they started the first out a little slow, but righted it late, I thought. Still, they were solid.

20 more boys, then you can enjoy the Christmas break.

  70. Said I’d be damn impressed if they found a way to win this one, any way.

I’ll re-phrase; I’ll be damned impressed with the results; a 113-point pace can’t be an accident.

That said, this remains the strangest ‘offense’ I’ve ever seen.
Totally outplayed for long stretches, no real rhythm, dump, cycle, grind, kind of a ‘take what they give you approach’

But sonuvagun if they don’t cash it. It’s getting to be pretty amazing.

And the individual efforts. Like Gabby! Who got slashed just there. Unbelievable.

  71. Dubi
    gimme a break.
you either get that on net or send it back to your guys
or eat the puck deep in the zone.

  72. Gotta love the defense first attitude of this team. Shut down the opponent and ur chances will be there and that’s what they do each and every night. That’s why they win and it’s why it doesn’t mean if guys have 3 goals or 10 goals. It’s defense into offense.

  73. No crying. It’s just …… different.

Sitting here considering buying everyone I know $60k trucks for Xmas,
    then joining Skynard Nation.

  74. Still quite impressive that climbing into the stands to beat a fan with his own shoe doesn’t even make the top 20 of Milbury’s Stupid Things I’ve Done In The NHL list.

  75. It’s long after the fact, but that was an absolutely *viscious* slash on Gaborik’s shoulder as he went in on goal – if I were in the Ranger front office, I would ask the league to look at that play…

Who made that slash? Somebody should make that skunk pay for that slash…

  76. Rangers are in Flyers heads here a bit; they’re looking for the perfect play after 2 periods of nothing but sticks, legs, and Hank.

    Spoke to soon. Ah well.

Not a dreaded lead anymore James ;)

  77. HageLinCalPruStepanlahan on

how does one flyer goal translate into ‘a lot of problems’ for the Rangers? gawd their announcers suck

  78. I saw the slash, Rod – and I saw him talking about it on the bench – it was a real nasty slash, and it should be answered for…

  79. Liev Schreiber on

With the Rangers holding on to a 2 goal lead, Ruslan Fedotenko bleeds to death on the bench.

  80. Maybe someone should lay some lumber on Giroux’s forearm or wrist…payback’s a beeotch!

  81. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Bickel will now go 25 games without registering a point, get sent down, and never be heard from again. This scenario happens all the time.

  82. When they hand out Flyer jerseys, there must also be a manual on how to be a scummer.

40 years of this crap! Makes me sick.

  83. Boom Boom Bathgate - FOUR CUPS since 1926 on

Good point, Lev, teams always get pumped up when a teammate wins a fight.

  84. the cappy!! yay ragers!! number 1 in the conf.!!!! whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  85. >>>Devs blew a three goal lead in the 3rd againast the Craps. LOL!

Is Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarty in the nets, ORR?

  86. Well in their defense the Flyers played against a divisional opponent last night and the Rangers got to rest……oh..right… : D

  87. This is where the good marty… Biron is like so hugmungus big! Hank gets rested for big game and there is no drop off.

  88. Actually, don’t blame Lev – after the 2nd period ended, *Trautwig* mentioned that Hank was pitching a shutout, so HE was the one who uttered the no-no!

  89. That puck is played with a high stick! I think no review cause played continued. I think it will count. High stick didn’t directly go in net.

  90. I heard that last night as well. Joe Mich has lots of those types of descriptions often going into detail about legs, muscular structure, etc, but always about young players. It gives me the creeps.

  91. >>>>Every time McD makes a good play a person in Montreal gets violent diarrhea

Why? He doesn’t speak French!! And he’s another Americain!!

  92. Ridiculous move by Lavoilette.

That’s how players tune you out, still talking down 2 with 20 secs left.

  94. Rangers win the feats of strength!!! Best Festivus ever!!!

I love how Hank tosses his stick…..always get a bit green over whoever gets it :)

What a tremendously tremendous week! LGR!!!!

  95. Happy Holidays everyone! Happy New Year. Ill see you all in a few weeks. Hopefully still in 1st place…..

  96. I guess they can win divisional games w/o you know who. Just another terrific team effort win in which they shut down a good team that was red hot coming into tonight. The defense has stepped up with all the injuries. They keep coming in and fitting right in. But of course, the coaching doesn’t teach or anything.

The youth of this team is just a winning breed of guys that do what it takes. Step, Cally, Girardi, McD, Artie, Dubi. None of these leaders are even close to 30. That’s a great way to win for a long time.

  97. now that matters are calmer
does someone what’s the rule of a puck touched
    by a high stick?

is play stopped if team that touches puck after
high stick is the same or what….?

had mute on so i didn’t have to hear flyers broadcast
so i missed ref’s explanation. what was it?

  98. wtb?!?!?

    listening to radio broadcast
    and they’re interviewing MDZ
    and then it goes out.

  99. 4-0-1 in 2nd game of back to back. Boy, the guys must really hate how Torts works so hard in camp and how it won’t help them in the season.

  100. HWirth,

    You are dead on.

This team is building towards lasting success.

Great way to go into the Christmas break.

  101. They have chemistry. You can’t teach chemistry. Which is why they won’t make that big trade that might break it up.

  102. Go JETS GO! By the way. Pitt 4 pts back as of now with us having 2 games in hand. Would like that to continue.

  103. I’ll tell you what, you can argue about which team has more talent or which team is tougher. But I don’t think there’s any question about who has the better goaltending. Lundqvist= MVP

  104. An hour later the MSG experts are still saying Gaborik hit the boards and got hurt.

Not the slash that it was.

They should do what they do best.

Plug their charities one last time and cut to Boomer & Carton.

  105. add next year the scoring punch of Kreider and Thomas and hopefully healthy Staal and Sauer, and you’ve got a bigtime annual contender

  106. Absolutely amazing, Rod! I’m here at home with a standard resolution TV, and those guys are there, *in person*, with all the replays available to themselves, and they still can’t get it right…Incredible!

  107. WHAT???? Hank just s complimented the coaching staff and their structure. Torts must have been holding a gun to his head to say that.

  108. Ha, LW, I didn’t that spelling of diarrhea since I last read British medical study.

Yeah, dde, love my grandma. Too bad she hasn’t been around since 1977.

Lev, say hell to holy land. Have fun.

  109. HageLinCalPruStepanlahan on

Not sure what my internet accessibility is going to be for the next few days since we are heading to the wilds of Indiana so just wanted to take a few to say

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH, HAPPY FESTIVUS and all that jazz to the greatest bunch of Boneheads ever! I love you guys, you hold a special place in my heart and in my life! Looks like we have ourselves a nifty, ass kickin team this season! May you guys have a wonderful time with your family, friends and assorted loved ones over the next few days, and know that you’re held in high esteem by some crazy chick currently living in the dirrrrrty souf! XOXOXOXOXOX

  110. Thanks, Linda! Hava fun, and hug the big guy!

This game will make the 3rd HBO episode very enjoyable.

  111. Safe trip Lev.

    Hank and the hat chat….lol!

btw, have I mentioned that Stu has put the team’s hottie quotient into overdrive?

  112. By the way, Erixon’s name has not been mentioned much during the last two games. Isn’t what you want from the young rookie? Sounds good to me.

  113. “Ad the difference between me and you carp, is that if this team came out and looked great, i would be the first one to eat my words and say i was wrong about turderella, and be happy i was wrong. You,n the other hand, refuse to even acknowledge that there is a potential Ranger disaster here, and that the clueless coach “in charge” might be implicit in what is happening, or more accurately what is not happening.”

  114. Dave Maloney mentioned the shoulder chop on Gaborik by Meszaros – dammit! And he got a goal tonight, too….file that information away for another time, fellas, and give it to him good……

  115. You forget sometimes how good we have it with Sam and Joe until you’re forced to listen to the Flyers shills via Comcast. Seems pretty sleazy to ‘nationalize’ a game on NHL network just to get your evil megacorporation a few more commercials.

  116. LMAO Spider – They had that in its uncropped version on the Rangers site and it cracked me up. It’s when they announce the Richards goal was good against Phx.

  117. Wow, Tampa got their stockings handed to them tonight….

Beezer Olga, Beezer!! Name of my first kitty, btw.

  118. Thanks to all! Ilb, will do. Ill actually be back in the States on the 5th before flying back across the Atlantic the next afternoon. Ill try to catch the game against the Panthers on the 5th on tv…if I dont collapse from jet lag. Till then!

  119. Sigh, if I was made of younger stuff (less than 26) I sure would love love to be in city tonight wherever the boys go for post-game fun. But, gotta rise early for a train for Christmas with the Fozzy posse and Phil’s cheesesteaks…..oh, how I suffer :)

Merry Christmas all! And to ilb, C3 etc., enjoy the Chinese and a movie!! :)

  120. Lev- You know we’re kidding about that goal right? and have a great trip.

ilb -Sorry about that, as well

  121. Loved Beezer. Got to meet him once. Former editor let me cover him doing something with kids in Westchester when he was with team, even though it had nothing to do with my beat, but my ed was a Rangers fan too, and knew I loved Beez.

  122. It’ll be a year ago next week that McDonagh first got called up (and when Del Zotto first got sent down). Funny that it was supposed to be a cup of coffee for him and Tortorella said: “Whether he plays a game or not, I don’t know.”

You think he might stick in the bigs now?

  123. Mama- ummm, i thunk you forgot mrs is Christian, so I celebrate Xmas as well. Not to mention it’s my 26th…

Dde, jpg- sorry about what? My grandma would be 111 if she was still around. RIP. She is the reason I speak Yiddish fluently…

  124. Nice win by the Rangers but for me, as usual with the damn Flyers, their nastiness stands out and in particular 2 cases.

The first is already discussed on here – the stick whacking Gabbie on the shoulder. Geesh…and the official of course was oblivious to it.

The 2nd was on the dispute 2nd Flyer goal. Watch Van Reisjerk as he going down after deflecting the puck – yes he’s dealing with a couple of Rangers but as he nears the ice, he clearly throws out an elbow at McDonagh. McDonagh reacted as anyone would – turning his head away instinctually. This happened basically stationery because it was in front of the net so McDonagh wasn’t hurt, but the intent was, for me, clearly there and nasty.

Glad the Philly Boobys lost, that’s for sure…
