Another ticket contest tomorrow

Our gracious Bonehead donor has given us two more tickets to give away, for the Jan. 17 game against Nashville. The contest will involve predictions for tomorrow’s Rangers-Devils game.

So let’s review the rules, shall we? (answer: yes).

1) This is the easy part. You pick the score, then a bunch of tiebreakers: game-winning goal, Rangers shots, Devils shots. Your entry should look something like this (with different numbers and names): Rangers 17, Devils 1. GWG: Avery. Rangers shots: 18. Devils shots: 44.

2) The score of the game must be exact. Not closest. Not margin of victory. You must have the exact score to move on to the tiebreakers, if needed. Note that the game-winning goal is the goal that provides the margin of victory, whether it be the second goal in a 17-1 game, or an overtime or (God forbid) winning shootout goal.

The Rangers’ shots tiebreaker shall go to the closest prediction without going over. If contestants are still tied, the Devils’ shots tiebreaker shall be used, and also will go to the closest prediction without going over. If all remaining contestants are over the number of Devils shots, the contestant closest to the correct total wins.

Finally, if still somehow tied, I will either give the tickets to Sally or flip a coin at Blog HQ … or I will wait for the next time I see the donor at a game and let him flip the coin.

3) The most important rules regarding entry into the contest: DO NOT EVEN DREAM ABOUT ENTERING MORE THAN ONCE. I will check IP addresses from any entrant whose screen name I do not recognize. Entries open when the Tuesday morning post goes up, usually between 5-6 a.m., and will close when the It’s Go Time! post goes up shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Only entries in the morning post Tuesday will count. In other words, don’t put your predictions in any other thread.

4) Don’t get me aggravated with dumb questions or details.

5) *-The judge’s decision on all issues will be final. (*-I am the judge).

Good luck, and have fun. And don’t make your pick until tomorrow’s pre-game notes thread.

    a. You think the gallbladder was painful? Try a little separation anxiety.

  4. Erica Christensen on

Rangers 0, Devils 1. GWG: Own goal (by me). Rangers shots: 3 (I whiff thrice). Devils shots: 50 (all screened by me).

  5. Imagine Christensen and Redden on the ice at the same time.

If it was ever possible to give up two goals on the same shift, this would be it.

  6. Not yet, Sally….It’s getting complicated. It may be a last moment thing..Have you decided where?

The holiday roster freeze is in effect until December 27th. So don’t expect any trades. They can’t waive or send anyone to AHL, but they can still call players up from AHL in case of emergency.

  7. Unfortunate to see that Howlings made the cut in Waseka. Can Kevin Weekes get his OWN Feed? I don’t want anything blocking my eyes from his gems (not how I mean it – not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Also, good morning guys. What do you guys think Luigi and Big Rig are up to today?

  8. Anyone think Eminger might have a concussion?? Tort’s immediately said he was going to be out awhile.

  9. iDoodie machetto on

I saw somewhere that time Warner would finish the season before pullin MSG. Any truth to that?

  10. I just found this quote funny, coming from our good friend Tom Renney’s team.

EDMONTON – Edmonton Oilers head coach Tom Renney has said many times that if he had any input, winger Ales Hemsky would switch his stick.

    Hemsky shot back on Saturday.

“I don’t like his stick either. We have that in common,” Hemsky said. “And I don’t like his skates.”

    Read more:

  11. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, that’s only a temporary condition.

And catch 22 is right: Avery should be playing over Boogaard. But I think Boogaard should be playing over Christensen.

  12. Doodie- don’t hold your breath. TWC said they will not remove MSG until the end of the season. They agreed to pay the initial offer which was pulled off the table long time ago. They now said that MSG may black it out unless the agreement is signed. They are playing ping pong basically. I’ve been looking for an excuse to switch to FiOS, this could be it.

  13. I understand it is only practice, but how does Dubi not get bumped down? He dogged it on the last shift last game and the game ended on a lucky goal. He was clearly standing there waiting for the game to end. No accountability for Dubi. I’d love to see the pictures he has of Torts.

Can’t wait to see Rupp on the PP again! WTB?

  14. It’s easy to figure out when the Twitter Avatar Dubi uses was taken. LMAO This guy doesn’t get it.

  15. stranger nation on

How bout Dubi at C between Hags and Mitch one line with boyle btwn Rupp/Prust for grind/checking line – assuming AA is back and Feds slides back down to left of B Rich w/ Cally.

Need to roll all four the entire game.

  16. I really love how these guys are finally learning how to play with Hagelin. Just throwing that puck out there and letting him use his speed.

  17. Not sure why Dubinsky didn’t change as the puck got cleared either, but he hardly dogged it once the puck came back his way, given he maintained possession in the Coyotes’ zone while he was gassed, enabling the goal to even happen.

  18. C’mon LW, we all know he wasn’t gassed, @he was just slowed down by that $4M he has in his pockets@

  19. practice lines according to andrew gross:

    Anisimov-Stepan-Gaborik, Dubinsky-Richards-Callahan, Rupp-Fedotenko-Prust, Hagelin-Boyle-Mitchell, Wolski-Christensen-Avery

  20. Hm, didn’t Boyle play defense in college? I’m pretty sure he can’t be any worse than the 9 minutes a game Woywitka gets.

  21. The problem with Dubinsky might be that he is shagging his hair this year. Last year he had that 1940’s parted thing going on. Probably should get back to what works.

  22. can we fit Redden under the cap? if we can, then we should call him up! If EC gets chance after chance…why can’t Redden?

I am starting new “Bring Redden back” movement! Who’s with me?! nobody? oh well…

  23. if Torts was a team first coach he would put Avery in for the next few divisional matches.. but he is not…so he won’t.

  24. LW, so you’re saying the Rangers missing half of their regular defensemen and getting bailed out by sky high save percentages *isn’t* going to bite them in the Cooke at some point?

  25. I still think they need to sit Dubi for a game. He does a nice job on the special teams, but for all that dough though, I think riding the pine for one game wdn’t hurt. Only problem is we play 4 divisional games in a row.

Do we really think Rupp deserves the ice right now? And on the PP nonetheless? Really?

We need 6 pts out of the next 8.

  26. That’s right, ilb. Until the end of time. This team better never, ever lose again or else Torts is the Worst, Avery is the best and Sather is the devil.

  27. Absolutely, CTB. And if they win all of them, the score differential should’ve been better. Fire Torts!

  28. I guess with Woywitka struggling with a foot issue, Erixon got called back up. Not exactly, what you’re looking for on defense. G-MCD. MDZ-Strahlman, Bickel-Erixon. With tough games coming up and the roster freeze. That’s a lot more of an issue than that 5th line.

  29. So Sauer is out indefinitely, Eminger out 8-10 and Stahl finally cleared for contact drills. If we get Stahl back the Defense looks a LOT better. Chin up, HWirth

  30. stranger nation on

Girardi/McD TOI will easily average over 30 if games are close.

With NYR PP playing 4 forwards and 1 Dman, rupp should play on the second unit and park his big assen right in front of Miss Marty.

  31. thenyrangers New York Rangers
#NYR INJURY UPDTES: Torts says Steve Eminger out 8-10 weeks, & that Michael Sauer “is not going to be with us for a bit”

That’s 2 of their top out long term with Staal still at least a month away. They will need to survive this rough stretch until roster freeze ends and than need to start looking for defensive help.

  32. Maybe this works out better for us because we are forced to make a move to get a good defenseman and then Stahl comes back and we are the best team in the history of the world in all sports and the Rangers never, ever lose another game.

    Is Leetch in Game Shape?

  33. this d core is depleted.

i am sorry but how can we survive this many injuries on d. there will be cracks all over the ice

  34. thenyrangers New York Rangers
Torts also says that Tim Erixon will join the team tomorrow on emergency basis in case Jeff Woywitka (foot) is unable to play…

  35. CTB

Those numbers still seem a bit skewed by the first few games where the Rangers barely touched the puck, but I’d still subscribe to the thought that their record flatters them a bit right now. (Fire Torts!)

Having said that, the Rangers were absolutely dominant playing with the 3-2 lead last game, so I’d place most emphasis on that.

  36. I’m looking at that Beauchemin 3.8 expiring contract (either WW goes in return or is Whaled to make room at his 3.8) as more of a possibility now than ever. This isn’t like Sauer and Eminger are out 7-10 days and you have to survive 4-5 games. These are long term 20+ game injuries that need to be reacted to.

  37. It’s definitely a “concern” that most of our D is injured. We probably need to get someone. Too bad we let Kaberle go up to Montreal!

  38. For those you can see twitter.

    AGrossRecord Andrew Gross
Bickel over Erixon for tomorrow (if Woywikta can play) based on Bickel’s physicality and what he brings there. Torts liked him in camp.

  39. stranger nation on

These are our 6-8 slot D playing 4-6 slot D minutes. Easier to replace. They have been playing good, but we are looking to replace Leech and Zubov

  40. LA Kings could also use a locker room shake up with coaching change. Willie Mitchell 3mil upcoming UFA.

  41. Manny – Would love him but Poile said he won’t decide anything until Feb. 27 and their playoff standings… Can’t wait that long.

  42. In Carolina, Gleason, Spacek and Allen are all upcoming UFA’s. Easily rentals that shouldn’t cost much and would provide vet depth they will need now.

  43. Ah. I was unaware of that. Thanks. I guess we will just have to settle for someone’s overpaid scraps.

If Stahl is cleared for contact could he possibly be back in 2 weeks? Because then we would have

    Stahl – Girarid
    McBust – Del Zaster
    Strahlman/Sauer – Eminger/ERixon/Bickel/Woywhatever

    That looks pretty great.

  44. ILB….

    NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks
Rangers have cap space to recall Bickel, Erixon after previously placing Staal, Wolksi on LTI, believed last we

  45. I dont think Staal is a month away HWirth. Id say 2-3 weeks max. 8-10 weeks for Eminger hurts, that’s probably 4 weeks more than I originally thought.

  46. Have to say, I don’t think this will be nearly as big of a problem as some of you think. Two of the Rangers four lines play like they’re on a penalty kill all the time anyway, and that will offset the weaker dmen.

  47. Manny – Long term on Sauer means like months…
Staal 2 weeks? I don’t know. Once he’s cleared for contact, I’m not sure how long it will take for him to be in game shape.

  48. How come Sauer seems to be out long term due to a concussion and Giroux is already coming back for the Flyers. The impact didnt seem to be that different, Simmonds really nailed Giroux with his knee and Sauer hit his head on the boards but it wasnt THAT hard, i mean he got up right away and skated away. I guess i wont say Flyers are less careful when it comes to concussions after seeing that Pronger is out for the year, but something doesnt add up.

  49. HW, the problem I see is that even with dealing for impending UFAs, every GM in the league knows the Rangers are in need of a proven D. So the asking price for even a 5th/6th type guy is going to be considerably more than if the Rangers were a bit healthier.

  50. Lev – If the Docs that work with the NHL could figure out how Giroux is ok and Pronger and Sauer are not they’d be the happiest guys. That’s the $64,000 question or is this case $87,000,000 question.

  51. Concussions are unique and cannot be compared to another one. After all, you are dealing with the human brain.

  52. I’m still trying to figure out how Gaborik scores an empty netter GWG in a 3-1 win.

I suppose if the Rangers are up 1-0 late in the game, he hits an ENG putting them up 2-0. Then the Devils score to make it 2-1, then the Rangers score again to make it 3-1. Pretty wild finish actually, I’d sign up for that.

  53. Truthfully, if I’m the organization I’m not counting on Staal until he’s actually played several games and not feeling any symptoms. The Pens waited and waited with Cindy and after a few games, he realized he wasn’t ready and is out again.

  54. It works like this – Rangers are tied with the Devils 1-1. The Rangers are desperate to score. Fatty Brodeur is in net but he smells a cheeseburger. He abandons the net and attacks the glass trying to get the Burger. Sadly, by the time he gets to the glass he is too tired to do anything except lay down and sleep. Thus, the net is empty and Gaborik scores the second goal of the game which is listed as the GWG. BOOM

  55. Well one could put a timetable on them Carp, and then one could be terribly wrong with said timetable.

  56. and, as somebody began to mention, but I’ll add to it:

Bickel and Erixon would be replacing Eminger and Woywitka. Not Leetch and Zubov. Not Robinson and Savard. Not Staal and Girardi.

  57. If they even dream about bringing Staal back prematurely they’re asking for serious trouble. I’m sure it’s tempting considering all the injuries but they have to be smart. Same thing with Sauer. They’ll see what Bickel is capable of and probably do the same with Erixon. If it’s not enough they’ll have to make a trade.

  58. Wicky©"suspend the hittee..LW compliant version" on

    morning ILB and all!

    LOL on hair!

    I’m here!

as helpful as dubi and mcdonut were on that goal, it’s biron’s aggressive play that made it all happen.

    best of luck girl!!

you should do a ticket contest again sometime soon!!

When staal is cleared for contact, then it becomes really dicey (trust me I know). He may or may not take contact well and it really just depends on the individual. If he comes back too soon after it, we may see a repeat of the the crosby debacle (see crosby, sid). It wouldn’t shock me if he isn’t playing in the WC at all.

I DO NOT think Eminger has a concussion at all. I’m pretty sure it is a shoulder issue only (sucks though)!

  59. But Eminger was already replacing Sauer and Wowyitka was replacing “Why isn’t Willie Mitchell a Ranger yet” who was replacing “Del Zaster is a bust, trade him yesterday” as the 6th D based on early season results.

  60. We’re doing pretty damn good without Stahl, so it’s not like we *have* to rush him. If that means not getting him back until the last week of the season, then I’m all for it.

Still crazy to think this is all because of his own brother.

  61. Sadly, Leetch is probably in good enough shape to come back and play D for us. Speed not withstanding he probably would do a pretty decent job too. What’s speed matter anyhow? I mean we traded for Caber last season!

  62. Orr, honestly I think if he’s going to come back it should wait until the playoffs (if they qualify)
I think that should be the plan whether he’s symptom free tomorrow or 10 weeks from now. Guarantee that’s the earliest Crosby comes back at this point.

  63. James G Defense needs chemistry and communication. Bringing back Staal in postseason would not be ideal. Bringing back Staal with month left in season would be ideal

  64. also, people need to stop with this b.s. about Mike Rupp “going the distance.” guy was scratched in 20 of the 24 Devils playoff games that season and was about as instrumental to that cup win as Nick Kypreos was in ’94. yeah he got the cup clinching goal; so have all timers like Frantisek Kaberle and Travis Moen.

  65. Agreed James. Definitely should eer on the side of caution with Staal. However, I think he’d need at least a few games to shake the rust and prove to be symptom free before jumping into a playoff series.

  66. Wicky©"suspend the hittee..LW compliant version" on

I still think slats makes a move for iggy/sarich before it’s all said and done…(musing only)

  67. Advanced statistics are useful. People who fail to recognize this have their head stuck in sand.

  68. Wicky©"suspend the hittee..LW compliant version" on

sorry, no way they do that deal without woywitka—> in it as well!

  69. Wicky©"suspend the hittee..LW compliant version" on

Sorry if my last post was a bit confusing I was spitting out sand

  70. catch, it wouldn’t be the first time a team did that. And I don’t think that after playing the majority of the last 4 seasons together he and Girardi would suddenly be having communication breakdowns. Especially if Staal is practicing with the team.

  71. LW – I just glanced at advanced stats, I thought the Rangers would be much higher in the PiDtO category

  72. Dubinsky for the entire Bat Yam Jet Turtles team. They have a 13/yo and a few 14/yos that are showing promise.

  73. “Sather has been after Iginla since 2003″…Does anyone else see a problem when you want the same player for 9 years? most notably the fact that he was 9 YEARS YOUNGER IN 2003?!?!

  74. James G Maybe not but when you insert Staal with Girardi, what about the communication of the other defense pairings?

  75. Lol, Wicky…

HWirth- thanks, it makes sense now. I was wondering where the cap room came from. Staal was never on LTIR, LB suggested at the beginning of November they might place him, but they never did. Now, last week they placed both WW and Staal, apparently. I don’t remember reading it anywhere….

  76. catch, I see what you’re saying. but as of now it looks like every pairing aside from McD and Girardi are a crap shoot anyway and probably will be for a while. So again, I don’t anticipate it being a major shake up. No telling who’s going to be dressing and paired with whom over the next month-plus. I mean let’s be real- if our blueline for the opening round of the playoffs were Staal, Girardi, Mcdonagh, Sauer, Del Zotto, Eminger I’d be pretty damn shocked and say that they better thank their lucky stars.

  77. lol wait a minute, Woywitka is hurt too? They just called up Erixon again, too. I need some salted crackers and a couple of dramamine tablets. I’m not feeling so well..

  78. since his epic Stanley Cup clinching in goal in the second period of a 3-0 shutout, Mike Rupp has a total of 4 points in 39 playoff games. in that same time span, Sean Avery, who’s clearly not the player Mike Rupp is nor could ever hope to be, has 15 points in 28 playoff games.

  79. And don’t forget that awesome “assist” against NJ that they actually had to invent a rule for in order to keep it from happening again, Lloyd

  80. I don’t even acknowledge Sean Avery as a player anymore. He’s just some guy who happened to wander onto a rink one day and John Tortorella felt sorry for him.

  81. Mike Rupp has a cup clinching in goal with the Devils in 02-03. Even though he only played in 4 of the 24 playoff games that year, it’s obvious Greatness (aka Mike Rupp) was biding his time until the biggest spot to come on and do what he does best, score goals. Guy is just a great player, let’s be real.

Torts also says that Tim Erixon will join the team tomorrow on emergency basis in case Jeff Woywitka (foot) is unable to play…

I have to start reading more than the last handful of posts when I get on here mid afternoon

  83. Sean Avery doesn’t even really play hockey. When you’ve seen a guy with “Avery 16” on his jersey, it’s been one of the obsessive-compulsive Avery lovers (and why they love him is anybody’s guess) putting on a jersey and skating with the team.

  84. Not sure it’s a good idea, JamesG…If you need Dramamine just from reading a few posts, you may end up in ICU if you read the whole thread…

  85. ilb is right. if you need a boost, just watch some highlights of Mike Rupp, particularly his 2003 cup clinching goal. be warned, you may wind up with the vertigo – the guy is that dynamic.

  86. catch, please help me get my head out of the sand, because I’ve only covered a few thousand NHL games.

    which advanced stat is useful?

  87. Lev- I don’t think you can compare the two injuries even if they occurred in a similar fashion.
Even so, Giroux’s looked like more of a glancing blow and his helmet was on when it happened.
Sauer’s helmet was already off when his head hit the glass and it looks like he may have caught the top of the boards also which aren’t flush with the glass.

“wasnt THAT hard” looked pretty hard to me, though.

  88. Carp pierre maguire has covered a few thousand NHL games and has no NHL knowledge. No shame in using your eyes. Just know that eyes can be deceiving.

  89. And what IS IT with advanced stats? They don’t give them to you in advance, and there’s no rush!

  90. “…Does anyone else see a problem when you want the same player for 9 years?
most notably the fact that he was 9 YEARS YOUNGER IN 2003?

Not when he’s still scoring 43 goals a season it isn’t a problem.

Please don’t tell me you have to be 24 or younger to play on this team,
because (it’s all the internet GM’s know how to say &) I’m pretty sure Gaborik, Lundqvist, and Richards would all really appreciate the help.

  91. “I’m out.I’m out of the contet” Hey Carp about the contest, If it ever gets down to a coin toss( I doubt that will ever happen) how about ya give each one one ticket. After all we are boneheads.
