Tortorella post-game

Had some technical/deadline issues thanks to the shootout, earlier deadlines and a brand new computer system. So I never made it to the lockerroom. I did get to John Tortorella’s presser.

The coach did not allow Artem Anisimov to address the media regarding his rifle-shot celebration that touched off a melee, but defended Anisimov as a good kid. Tortorella did, however, admit that what he did was over the line, and he said he didn’t blame Tampa Bay for reacting as it did, and that he’d expect his team to react the same way.

Brad Richards said, “I don’t think Artie was doing it against their team, and obviously Vinny (Lecavalier) is going to think that without knowing Artie, so that happens. Artie won’t do that again. He wasn’t trying to embarrass anybody. He was celebrating a nice goal. But that’s what happens in hockey. We all move on from that.”

Here’s John Tortorella’s press conference:

  1. John Tortorella on the MSG Post game show.

“I didn’t make him available. He feels awful about it.”

“He’s a great kid. I don’t think he realized what would happen. I don’t think it’s planned by him. He crossed a line. He apologized to the team right away. It was wrong, he knows that, the leadership of the club will take over.”

“it’s wrong, we all know that. It was the wrong thing to do. I’m in a protective mode with him because I think he deserves protecting. He is a solid solid guy who made a mistake. He’s not an idiot. There are some idiots in our league but he isn’t an idiot”

  2. Got no problem with coach protecting his player, it’s what he should do.

Certainly wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen in the NHL.

  3. whats the big deal , i liked the celebration , yeah their team got fired up we should have gotten fired up right back

  4. Done with you people for the night. Can’t even admit when the coach coast his team the game. Adios.

  5. FWIW, I thought the Rangers took over the play after the incident. Killed the penalties. Could have put it away several times in the third.

Lost on a goal that should never be scored, and then a silly breakaway competition they held after the hockey portion of the game ended. And if they win the breakaway competition, you’re all happy out of your minds tonight.

  6. Oh, the coach definitely cost the game.

And he’s killing our No. 1 D pair.

Was Stralman so terrible that he couldn’t play at all the last month?

Girardi (32mins) and McD (27mins) & Mitchell in the SO.

Not Torts’ shining moment for sure.

  7. Carp, I wouldn’t have been happy about giving up another lead on an (almost) last-minute goal that tied the game. I would have felt better with the second point gained in the shootout, for sure – but blowing the lead at the end was galling.

  8. Just getting back after that gong show. Hockey gods did right by Tampa in this one. Artie should be apologetic for that nonsense. Guy has 35 career goals and is running around ice like he won the Stanley Cup after a SHG against a non-playoff hockey team. Good for Vinny going after him. Better by refs for not penalizing him for it. I’d want Cally to do same thing if let’s Dana Tyrell had done the same thing.

Also poetic justice for McDonagh (puck off stick on SHG) who didn’t deserve that boarding call. How exactly is it boarding if you are hit at faceoff and slide 7 feet into boards. If that’s boarding ever player that goes down should get sliding till they hit the boards.

As for Torts, I love the way he handled the post game stuff. You need to protect your player there and also admit he was wrong. All good there. HOWEVER, I was EXTREMELY UNHAPPY he played AA in the 3rd period. As much as I don’t like God’s antics, had he done that Torts is not playing him the rest of this game and the next one. Gotta be consistent there and bench AA.

Be happy they got the charity point because the hockey gods rightfully took this one away from us.

  9. Not the best game, especially after first, but how can u blame the coach? These things happen, shake it off, move on…still got a point and i agree wit carp 100% they controlled play after incident….and btw thats not first time Artie Party did that move, just first time he pointed in direction of someone……..like Callaman said, “it is what it is”…..take the point, beat Buffalo Saturday…..LET’S GO RANGERS!! btw, refs suck how the byufglien did they “miss” Downie? and, Stamkos hittin Artie like a piece of carcillo??

  10. Just *one* more PP goal (which they had numerous chances to get) would have put this game away, and they could not get it done…fail!

  11. the puck bounced over Mitchell’s stick
he never got the shot off and garon
was lucky (or good) enough that the
forward momentum had puck heading towards
the open net but the goalie’s stick
    got in the way.

    Richards hit the post
and Gaborik just had a bad skill competition moment

  12. HOWEVER, I was EXTREMELY UNHAPPY he played AA in the 3rd period. As much as I don’t like God’s antics, had he done that Torts is not playing him the rest of this game and the next one. Gotta be consistent there and bench AA.

Agreed…..Avery would not play again until the Winter Classic, if at all, had he done that……I would have benched him too….I was just as shocked Torts put him back on the ice, not gonna lie

  13. I hope Shanny fines AA 2,500 for that nonsense. I can’t stand when Kaleta does his big fist pump thing when he has like 3 goals. I’m glad Cally and Richards came out and admitted AA was wrong. No double standard there, good job by both. They’d (and all of u) would be crazed if someone did that to us. And by the way, it doesn’t help that his last name ends in “ov” Sorry if that’s a Don Cherry pro-North American view of hockey, but if he wants to be an NFL WR go play in the KHL where they cry if there’s a fight.

Bench him? That’s a bit severe for an over-exuberant celebration. Good thing he didn’t throw his stick in the air. We’d have to shoot him.

  15. I had no problem with the Mitchell selection in shootout based on those career numbers. 4 for 5 coming in. Gotta figure he was doing well in practice when they play around with skills competition. Plus, give Garon some credit. He played well down the stretch.

  16. Olga – Really? So if Dom Moore had done that exact same thing when they tied the game at the end of 3rd you wouldn’t be calling for our guys to take him out.

  17. for anyone who doesn’t notice the tweet, there’s this to remember
    tomorrow

Make sure to watch @jimrome Friday at 4:30PM ET on espn2 as I’ll be a special correspondent on the show. I’m thrilled and honored to be on!!

  18. If you don’t have a problem with the AA play then don’t get upset when someone decided to stick their leg out on Gaborik. That’s the great part of hockey that the League forgot a long time ago. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Let’s the players police themselves.

  19. Olga Folkyerself on

Yes, I would. And I hope they would wipe the floor with him. But AA made a mistake. He apologized. That’s enough.

    Let it go, now.

That’s not even apples and oranges. That’s like…. Tire Pump and Canoe.

  21. I know it’s ok because a Ranger did it, but I will never look at the sport that way. I respect it too much to act like a homer. AA deserved to be benched by Torts at least for the remainder of the game.

  22. Bench him? That’s a bit severe for an over-exuberant celebration.

Yeah, but Torts, Cally, BRich and Artie all said it was WRONG…..Torts is the kind of coach that would do that and I was shocked….U think if it was Avery he would have been back on ice? It was a mistake, and Torts preaches accountability……..i dont think benching him for the third period would have been undeserved or unwarranted….shocked Torts didnt……..still love Artie…..and LOVE how team had his back, dubi, girardi, del zotto etc…..good to see…..

  23. Olga Folkyerself on

    IT WAS “WRONG”?

How many wrong things do you think are done in a game. If Torts benched everyone for a “wrong” move. He’d have to put the trainer out there. He’s still trying to win a game, and RT just scored a shorthanded goal for Cripes sake.
