It’s Go Time!

Game 14. Ya boys on a four-game winning streak.

The prediction contest is now officially closed.

Don’t forget this is a 7:30 starter.

The Rangers  lost to the Senators in that hideous game on Oct. 29, in which they blew a 4-1 lead in the final 10:42 of regulation, then lost a breakaway contest that was held after the hockey game ended.

Also in that game, Zenon Konopka received a very questionable major/game misconduct call for boarding Artem Anisimov, while Wojtek Wolski received a minor for a high hit that knocked out Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson with a concussion. He has yet to return, and today Konopka said that hit “still pisses me off.”

To which John Tortorella said, according to Pat Leonard’s blog, “I don’t give a crap what Zenon said, or whatever his name is, said.”

Of course, Wolski is out after groin surgery. So Konopka’s vengeance will have to be placed elsewhere. I imagine Brandon Prust and/or Andre Deveaux might run into him, but I also suspect Konopka might go after one of the Rangers’ skill guys.

Same lineup for the Rangers, with Henrik Lundqvist in goal, despite Martin Biron’s shutout over the Jets on Sunday.

  1. First

Pregame first guess…. This game will be the first time Avery will be a factor. This game might get chippy and look for Torts to unleash the Grate One on the Senators to try to draw retaliation penalties.

  2. I just hope Konopka does it right and challenge Bell Biv or Prust and not a skill guy. By the way, on Versus, Milbury made a good point. How come it’s always Torts that responds to opponents and not the players like Konopka or Thornton. Jones says that it’s probably good that Torts does the talking and lets the players play.

  3. Orr – That’s why I could not play fantasy hockey. I can’t see myself rooting for a guy against the Rangers yet it doesn’t bother me in baseball. I think 1 game of 162 is different than 2 points in the standings.

  4. Tropical Storm Sean is reving up and heading for the Bahamas. Could turn into Hurricane Sean.

  5. LOL i love how in the last game Tort’s even slapped Avery’s back. sorry, it’s just funny. dont even know why.

Nyr tied for team lead in fighting majors (12)

Could be some scraps tonight. Sauer needs to choose his spots wisely…

  7. Good pregame piece by MSG. Good to show the coach in a different light. Always a difference between game time and non game time with most athletes, coaches etc. That’s what makes it professional. They know how to turn off the switch unlike fans.

  8. Evening gang.

You were cracking me up all day long with the earlier posts. Good job bringing the funny.

people still logging away two threads ago…love it

  11. Stranger – I don’t know about Dubi but it wouldn’t shock me if Avery played a difference in this one and even scored. This COULD become one of his kinda games. If it doesn’t then he probably only plays 6 minutes again.

good job by Aves take that goon out of the game for 5min and get the fight out of his system hopefully

  20. Good job by Avery and Konopka there. Did there jobs? Love the respect there waiting for Konopka to take off his elbow pad.

  21. I can’t say I defended your honor, as your honor, which is very honorable, was never brought into question. Rather, wicky, under the spell of Manny, suggested I had influenced you in some negative way. Which, of course, I haven’t. You’re too awesome to be influenced by commonfolk like myself, and I would never attempt to influence you negatively anyway. Our binding passion for the lunch keeps us strong, Mickey. Don’t fall victim to Manny’s attacks!

Its not about how Avery did ….he answered the bell to take him off the ice !!

    GOOD MOVE by Avery!!!

  23. Rhode Island Ranger on

I like what Avery did there: challenged their heavyweight after his threatening pre-game comments and belligerent warm-up.

EC can handle him next shift.

  24. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

maybe we shouldn’t call it ‘turtle’ when in regards to gawd… maybe it should be
    ‘to michelangelo’

  25. LMAO, the real battle is still going on two threads ago. Is there a contest for who finally turtles on that one???

  26. You know what’s funny. I think the fans care more about the result of the fight than the players do. Players usually care about the principle of the matter like Aves challenging Konopka after his comments whether or not he “wins” the fight. Most fights end with one guy slipping on ice and loosing balance than an actual knockdown or by punch.

  27. Whoever picked I-needs-a-mop for the game winner you may be out of luck. Looks like crazy Joe Davola put the Kibosh on him.

  28. NYR_FAN via Android on

I’m not even watching the game yet but…dublowsky must be falling down, taking penalties, and not scoring….right? ;)

  29. Looks like Gaborik Stepan AA line will require 1st pair to play against. Watch Richards’ line to do some damage.

  30. i know the refs are letting a lot go this period
    but really…

just saw the chop sens goalie did on Avery

  31. I wouldn’t mind seeing Devo and Chris Neil having a go – Neil always victimizes the NYR in one way or another when these teams get together…

  32. Typical Rangers road penalty. Nothing lost nothing gained. Limited the chances. Didn’t really generate anything themselves. Looking for a key goal as always on the road.

someone called the huginsky demotion…who was that??

  44. I think Feds was put there with Cally because they are matching the Spezza line against them. Feds more responsible than Dubi.

  45. nice “hit” by konopka on Hank
    cause we all know
    (according to Joe M)
that Gabby is such a fierce player
    that k couldn’t stop

  46. JPG – I disagree with you on the officiating. I much rather see this style of open hockey (would help if ice wasn’t melting) with pace than penalty fests.

  47. the way this games looks so far my prediction ain’t gonna
cause we’re not going to even
    score carcillo

  48. You could see that coming a mile away. The forwards were not skating hard enough back in the zone and that Spezza vs. BRich matchup is a mismatch.

  57. They do it again. Took advantage of a kid in Runblad. Artie and Step, great work on forecheck. That’s how you do it. Step makes up for slow skating with always being in the right place at the right time.

  58. N.Country….with apologies to your fantasy….leave things alone!

    btw, you dropped him??? LOL!

  62. Wicky©The difference between courage and stupidity is one mistake on

i rhink cowen is a rookie and yes, the shield is not good

  63. Dubi – go feel shame. He may have had to have taken it since we had a D in low…potential for odd man rush?

  64. Geez Dubi. First you blow a chance at DZ’s rebound and then get caught so you take a lazy penalty hog tying the game down to the ice.

  65. Wicky©The difference between courage and stupidity is one mistake on

you call up a guy from CT and sit huginsky for a game

  67. The New York Rangers:
“We’ll help your grandma across the street
but we wouldn’t dare take a shot when
there’s more of us than them.”

  68. Actually, after seeing the replay, McD was at fault. I agree with Pat Leonard: “Rangers got a 3-on-1 off a Richards steal. McDonagh made the wrong pass back to Gaborik. Should have slid to Richards #NYR. Anderson freezes”

  69. i wouldnt say its McD’s fault. i would say it was gabbys. he shoulda passed it back to McD instead of going across to brich

  70. Stranger – Great point on Stepan. Sneaky is the right word for him. He’s not the fastest, strongest or toughest. But he is always in the right place on the ice which makes him look faster than he is. Great instincts.

  71. Stranger Nation on

Gabby was so low he had to shoot but bad angle short side shot – hey, that’s B Rich’s specialty!

  72. Stranger Nation on

Hwirth – he’s got great ice vision and plays with “urgent patience” – love that term.

  73. Captain Obvious here but… Next goal is the biggie in this one. 2-2 with the way we are generating offense could be trouble. 3-1 could be enough tonight.

  74. Hwirth….nice to see your posts again:)

what steppers may lack (huh, lack as a 10-year-old soph) he makes up for in his brilliant mind…when his work ethic and practice catches up….look out…

  75. I don’t want to sound to optimistic but, Stepan is a special kid, his hockey IQ and vision is evident….Artie could develop nicely as a LW….Gaby will continue to rack up goals….Gaby could very realistically give this team 50 goals with consistent play by his linemates and him playing 80 games….I’m a very happy camper with that line….

  76. Randy Butternubs on

Avery reefed in a fight and his one shot on goal in his 4 games back goes well wide and high. The guy doesn’t belong in the NHL anymore, it’s painfully obvious.

  77. LinCalPrustBoylahan on

    fascinating tweets

really? why do we need to have these tweets shown AND read to us?? OY

  78. Stranger Nation on

    Dubi, dubi, dooooo

White knuckling it now. Mid way through second period gathered puck in D zone had 2 mates breaking on his right and flipped it up in the air to the D man along near boards. Huh? Can he make a pass thru neutral zone? Rarely see him break someone out.

That and gliding back to NOT break up play leading to great scoring chance in 1st.

  79. NYR_Fan I agree. Artie seems to use his size better as a winger so good on him. It’s kinda funny how lines work. Brich for Gabby but it didn’t work. If someone could figure out why line chemistry works they’d win the CUP every year.

  80. Don’t know if anyone is following this mess in TB (I love picture in picture) but it will be talk of the NHL for a couple of days. Flyers refusing to move forward when TB goes into 1-3-1 trap. Now with a 1-0 lead heading to 3rd TB either will need to get out of it or FLyers will hold puck rest of period.

  81. NYR_Fan – As if that line is gonna last another five games. You gotta believe Gaborik will end up with Richards.

Anyone watching the debate during intermission? Fun!

  82. N.CountryNYRFan November 9th, 2011 at 8:49 pm
i dropped Stepan off of my fantasy team like a week ago i am tempted to put him back on but i don’t want to jinx him. What should I do?

add him bro. i just added him tonight and got rewarded for it!

  83. meaning to say this for a while…love that rangers tweet tag is for the boys! Come on boys!!

  84. I’m not sure agree with you on Stepan’s skating. He isn’t very speedy, but he is a very good skater. He changes directions well and is very difficult to knock off the

  85. You’re right Spider, I’m not Torts.

But, you gotta think Torts is really looking for the right combinations that work. And, that line is the Rangers best, #1 line right now, man.

I also think Torts is going to eventually do something about Dubinsky’s “play”. I don’t know what but maybe 24/7 will tell us all something about what really goes on in that room and who the real leaders are….Maybe they’ll make Dubi wear one of Torts’ horrible ties for a week….

  86. i also dropped step off my team, but am sticking with him now. especially keep him if hes gonna stay on the top line. cant believe duby isnt on the waiver wire in wicks league

  87. I wonder if Torts mixed up lines 2 and 3 for offensive reasons or to keep Spezza away from Richards when home team gets second change.

  88. Another decent game by Del Zotto. Not as involved but certainly steadier than the beginning of the year.

  89. Rick Carpiniello, 26, grew up in Harrison and began working in The Journal News’ sports department (back when it was The Reporter Dispatch and eight other newspapers) in October of 1977 after a year of covering high school sports as a stringer. For more than 20 years he covered the New York Rangers and the National Hockey League. Carpiniello has been writing columns on everything from local sports to the big leagues since 2002.

  94. OK where are those guys that were saying Gabby’s shot was gone? That he couldn’t shoot the puck…you know the way he did just now?

  95. N.CountryNYRFan on

at least i do have Gabby still on my fantasy team but if i still had stepan i would be killing it tonight

  96. Where are the Torts hates Avery guys now? I would never put my 4th line on the ice in that spot. Yet, he wanted to give them some ice on the road and look what happened.

BTW, the way Stepan and Gaborik are playing together is the exact reason I was against signing Brad Richards, regardless of the contract.

  105. Wow, you all are awesome, and kind of, um, something else, to keep track of that for Carp…Good job!

  106. Girardi should have just initally slapped that out of the zone. None of the ensuing funny bidness would have occurred.

  109. Doodie – I still say he’s doing a good job back there, and playing defense better than most forwards. The power play had been coming around until last game, and still got a goal in that one.

  110. Cally should have switched to his backhand with the pressure coming from his right side.
Ah Byfuglien it – Rangers win!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  113. That road win was typical of last season’s string of road wins. Timely goals, solid defense with loads of shot blocks and Hank good when needed.

  114. Not necessarily the worst miss by Callahan. His ultra-fail cause time to expire. And it didn’t cost us. But nonetheless, it was still an ultra-fail.

  134. Carp, this is a totally new breed of gibberish. It’ll take hours to get into it. But it’s beyond hilarious!

  135. Rangers need to keep taking advantage of this hot streak and lesser opponents. Schedule picks up after this stretch and in December in particular. Early points are really important in this League. With 3 point games it’s hard to catch up.

    we have a perimeter breach!

  137. Um…Toronto has the same amount of points as the Rangers. Pittsburg has 2 points more. Both played one more game than the Rangers did, actually.

  138. a wicky…..hahahahaha! is the other thread still going? Carp, it’s historic…let it go…$1.50 etc

  139. I’m sick of Sam & Joe saying “Dubinsky hasn’t scored a goal, but he’s trying so hard, and he’s doing everything else but score goals, which is good”

No, it’s not good! We don’t need another 3rd line grinder, we need him to score fuggin goals. Step up already! What the hell is taking him so long? You have guys all over the league that I’ve never even heard of, and they have at least one goal. Unbelievable! Colton Orr has a goal, and he’s played in only two games this season!!

  140. ORR – I agree with you. I love the 5 game winning streak. They’ve return to the form of last year when they were really good, especially on the road. BUT! I miss the Fire Torts people. Oh and where’s all the Avery talk? He’s doing exactly what’s being asked of him and being a team guy. WOW! Only exactly what the coach wanted all along.

  141. next contest should be who predicts the next time duby scores a goal. doesnt even have to be game, just pick the right season. it should look like this- season 2013-14, game 45, empty net.

  142. Loved that Girardi said on postgame that they still haven’t played a 60 minute game and have room for improvement. 1. He’s right. 2. Sign of a winning team is the desire to keep putting it together.

  143. Carp – please add this to your review by the way. Explain to me why MSG show 5 seconds of Torts and runs off air to a radio show replay that’s old news over 12 hours later!! It’s rare when the coach is willing to speak to the fans through media, can we at least hear it! CLUELESS!!

  144. ok, i said only pick the season, but then went ahead and picked the game too. anyhoo, lets hope he scores soon. even an EN for gods sake.

  145. Wicky©One of the mighty LOGGERS (you DON'T want to know the secret handshake)!! on

this season, game 37…for the preds (when when have traded him in a deal for suter because staal is out for the season)

  146. I don’t really care if Dubinsky is scoring at the moment. They are winning. Let him get out of this slump, he may get hot when someone else cools off. He isn’t a defensive liability and still being utilized in every possible important situation.

  147. Wicky©One of the mighty LOGGERS (you DON'T want to know the secret handshake)!! on

    EPIC….oops wrong thread

  148. Dubinsky is going to play less if this continues. Torts is patient to an extent but he plays his players based on their play. He could very well be on Boyle’s line soon….

  149. It’s not just goals. Dubi’s puck possession game is lacking and weak. I see him losing battles. Seems like a different player than the guy we had named Brandon Dubinsky on November 9th 2010….

    dubi possession..hahaha haha

  151. exactly nyrfan. and not just that, but only becausewe arewinning, its not a bigger issue. wait til we get on a losing streak and thisguy doesnt hae a goal by game 20

    maybe it’s the fatcat contract…

    fat dubi…hahaahahaha

  153. wicky- im going back to xbox man. my ps3 just woywitka’d on me. the 3rd one in 2 years. the newer xbox doesnt have the red ring of death anymore right?

  154. Off topic from the game, but seeing Paterno and the Penn State president get fired tonight is a little bit of justice. They both should be in jail, imo, but I’ll take them getting canned for knowing what happened and not doing a damn thing about it.

  155. As for Dubi, he needs a break in the biggest way. Appears to be pressing and that is never a good thing.

  156. Wicky©One of the mighty LOGGERS (you DON'T want to know the secret handshake)!! on

hell yes! And no it doesn’t. The kinect one is the one we bought and it works awesome!!

  157. Stuck in chicago for a business trip…finally back at my hotel room…DAMN happy to have my laptop and see the highlights of the game.

Gaborik…wow, you gotta wonder who that imposter was last season wearing #10…he’s making it look easy out there.

And Stepan…it’s enormously fulfilling to see a kid we heard great things about actually put it together at the NHL level.

    5 in a row…8-3-3…

I was a pessimist at the beginning of the homestand. I can’t help it, it’s my nature. But this team is looking pretty damn good right now. I don’t think they can walk over anybody in this league…but I’m starting to believe there’s no reason they can’t beat anybody.

My fiance scored tickets for the Nov. 26th game at MSG against the Flyers…Jagr’s first game back at MSG…Philly and NYR maybe high in the eastern conference standings…

    Hope it’s a great game.

Enjoying reading over the posts from the evening. LET’S GO RANGERS!!!

    boo him mercilessly

  159. 3rd d pair stinks.

    del zotto is much improved.

dubi had a really brain lock penalty tonight.

top line played great. they need more offense. need dubi to get going…

  160. I saw some Jagr replays today on NHL Network – since he’s with the Flyers, he seems to be back to that “saluting” after he scores goals – I remember him doing that in Pittsburgh too….

Did he do that when he was here in New York? I must admit that I don’t remember seeing him do that….

I don’t know if it has any meaning whatsoever – but I noticed it….anyone?

  161. stepan is 21, AA is a whopping 23… MDZ and mcdonagh are barely able to drink legally.

man if Staal was back that would really make a huge difference….

  162. Sam & Joe saying that Dubi’s doing other things well is ridiculous, IMO – he’s having trouble staying on his skates, he’s taking lousy penalties, he’s not even setting up his teammates for goals despite the fact that he’s not scoring himself….

    *NOT* playing well!

  163. Jimbo – The good news is they are winning so the Dubi issue is kinda muted but at some point he does need to play better. They gave him a big raise and are expecting a lot from him. When the GAS line goes stale, which it will cause all lines do after a while, he’ll need to step it then and I don’t know if he has it in him.

  164. HW, I agree – and I feel bad for Dubi, and I really wasn’t wanting to give him grief – but the “Sam & Joe Show” with all the silly excuses is just *so* transparent…..his game is off, and let’s not try to sugar-coat it, fellas!

  165. Jimbo…now that you mention it, I really don’t remember Jagr doing that as a Ranger. In fact, as a Ranger I kinda remember him being a bit more low-key when it came to goal celebrations.

Of course, he also just spent three years making untold millions while playing in barns so maybe he’s reverting back to his old ways as kind of a way of turning back the clock.

For myself, I can’t see Jagr performing at this level for the whole season. He didn’t have it in him 3 years ago to play a full season (he openly admitted to “saving himself” for the playoffs which is why he coasted through the regular season)…let alone now at his age after playing shorter KHL seasons.

I won’t boo Jagr the moment he steps on the ice. I hold no ill will towards him. It’s not like he spurned the Rangers to sign with the Flyers. And he did plenty good as a Ranger.

But as soon as the puck is dropped, I won’t mind seeing him get blanked and possibly shoved on his (considerable) ass a few times.

  166. Jimbo, I noticed that too. I don’t think he ever did that when he was with NYR. Almost makes me think he’s trying to stick it to the Pens fans even more. I can’t wait until those two teams play each other. It’s going to be awesome.

NYR, he was bumped down to Boyle’s line tonight, but I don’t know if that’s going to stick.

Whether NYR are winning or losing, I expect him to be one of the top guys on the ice, as he should be.

  167. Thanks for the reply, CJP – I don’t recall seeing him do that when he was here with the NYR, and I do watch the games. It’s very noticeable when he does it, and I think I’d remember it if he did it here.

I have no ill-will for him either – I thought that if he was going to come back to the NHL that it would have been nice to have him back here for one last season, but the Rangers weren’t in the Jagr hunt this past summer, so I can’t blame him for not coming back here.

Having said that, I *do not* want to see him have any success in his return to MSG – not an assist, not a goal……and I wouldn’t mind seeing him and Giroux getting knocked on their assens, either…

  168. CJP, when you think aboot it, him “saving himself” was actually smart, because he was always our best player in the playoffs.

I think he’ll have a really good season, but not like 05-06.

But I wont boo him either. It’s moronic to boo him. He loved being a Ranger, and wanted to be a Ranger, but Slats chose Gomez and Dreary over him, so he chose to play boring hockey in Russia. There’s just no need to boo him.

  169. That is true, ORR – he wanted to stay here for an extra year or two, but he wasn’t offered a contract – so he didn’t leave the NYR, they cut him loose….
