Contest time … win two tickets for Panthers-Rangers

227

Our anonymous friend wants to donate the first pair of tickets to the lucky (smartest) Boneheads, so he asked me to set up another contests for the two tix to the Dec. 11 game against Florida.

The pick-the-score contest No. 1 will involve Wednesday’s game against Ottawa.

So here we go with our usually complicated rules.

1) This is the easy part. You pick the score, then a bunch of tiebreakers: game-winning goal, Rangers shots, Senators shots. Your entry should look something like this (with different numbers and names): Rangers 17, Senators 1. GWG: Avery. Rangers shots: 18. Senators shots: 44.

2) The score of the game must be exact. Not closest. Not margin of victory. You must have the exact score to move on to the tiebreakers, if needed. Note that the game-winning goal is the goal that provides the margin of victory, whether it be the second goal in a 17-1 game, or an overtime or (God forbid) winning shootout goal.

The Rangers’ shots tiebreaker shall go to the closest prediction without going over. If contestants are still tied, the Senators’ shots tiebreaker shall be used, and also will go to the closest prediction without going over. If all remaining contestants are over the number of Senators shots, the contestant closest to the correct total wins.

Finally, if still somehow tied, I will either give the tickets to Sally or flip a coin at Blog HQ … or I will wait for the next time I see the donor at a game and let him flip the coin.

3) The most important rules regarding entry into the contest: DO NOT EVEN DREAM ABOUT ENTERING MORE THAN ONCE. I will check IP addresses from any entrant whose screen name I do not recognize. Entries open when the Wednesday morning post goes up, usually between 5-6 a.m., and will close when the It’s Go Time! post goes up shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Only entries in the morning post Wednesday will count. In other words, don’t put your predictions in any other thread.

4) Don’t get me aggravated with dumb questions or details.

Good luck, and have fun. And don’t make your pick until tomorrow.

    Carp, I have a question, but I think it’s dumb… should I ask it?

Good morning boneheads! Why am I up so early? Way to go, Daylight Savings! Carp, nice job on the mock contest submission numbers. 17 goals on 18 shots. hahaha. Wait, why I laugh?

Could the anonymous friend be… *AVERY?*

  2. Good morning! Nice opportunity for tickets but I just got up and my clairvoiant powers aren’t up yet. I’ll wake up first and think about it. Water boiled got to make tea.

  3. Wow Carp you give new meaning to the concept of read the fine print. Need more coffee and then I’ll take another look :)

Re the reference to Stepan’s sharp skating in the previous post, makes me think the goal-scoring opportunities will start to come his way, figuring good skating leads to ample scoring opportunities. Right now I have Stepan at ZERO even-strength goals on the season. If and when he breaks out and starts to carry his share of the offensive b burden, this team would get a real shot in the arm.

By the way Dubinsky and Fedotenko ALSO have ZERO E.S. goals on the year. A team cannot contend with 2/3rds of a goal-scoring offense. What the hell do these guys need to wake them up, exile via trade to Columbus, Ohio. Time to start running some AHL kids with a nose for the net through here for a few games.

  5. Rangers 3 Sens 2
GWG Christensen (I cant beleive I am actually picking Him)
    Rangers 28 SOG
    Sens 32 SOG

  6. Billy

ALWAYS ASK THE QUESTIONS WHICH YOU THINK ARE DUMB.

I’ve learned over my many years that those are the questions that need to be asked. If it wasn’t dumb….why bother asking it?

  7. Stranger Nation on

Joey – you are not necessarily wrong – but too early – reread post above

Boom Boom – Dubi also has no PP goals or SH goals, but he almost scored an ‘own’ goal last game which would have been too ironic.

  8. Joey & Nick: “You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free.”

Does Wonky Groin go under the knife today? Should we send him a care package of polish treats that were made in Canada?

  9. LMAO guys! Can you read the rules? The contest starts with *TOMORROW* morning post and ends with the Go Time. -TODAY- @TOMORROW@

Good morning, boneheads! Lol @ #4. Who wants to bet that the first smart MZA question comes from CCCP?

  10. Hahahaha Good one ilb. I especially like where you said -TODAY- @TOMORROW@. That was hilarious.

Buenos Dias. I must now go pick up my wife, for we took the day off together (election day), at the gym.

Happy Election Day – don’t forget to vote if you believe in Democracy. I do not so you won’t see me there!

  11. Hey Carp – maybe you should put the part about *TOMORROW* in bold or something. At least disqualify people who start guessing early. Or, alternatively, file their entires under SALLY who is allowed multiple entires.

I hope I don’t post more than once.

I’m just mad about saffron, she’s just mad about me. They call me mellow yellow, that’s right, slick.

Smoking cigarettes and watching captain kangaroo, don’t tell me, ive got nothing to lose.

  14. I’m going to throw this out there. I think with WW out 4 weeks the Rangers will call up either John Mitchell or Kris Newbury. Even though Hagelin or MZA might be better players they are not going to be playing regularly and therefore it makes no sense for them be scratched here when they could be playing for the Whale. Personally, I think Mitchell should get a shot anyway.

  15. Stranger Nation on

Do they have to call someone up if they are going to watch from press box? Is that just in case of injury or will Mitchell or anyone else play?

They were carrying extra forwards – brought up Devo and Aves for Rupp and WW.

I think Mitchell as well, but would not change line-up. The Avery affect has taken hold of the team (esp. EC) and there is not stopping them now.

Brass may want to bring back up Erixson to play on 3rd pair and PP for Woywhatever and allow Danny G to catch his breath during PP.

  16. So, Manny,… if don’t believe in Democracy (in election day), may it be for you an erection day…at least.

  17. Stranger – They signed Strahlman to do that and let Erixon grow in Ct. As for the extra fwd, it’s in case of an injury. Now lucky for the Rangers, they only play 4 games in like 10 days coming. Wednesday at Ott – Friday vs. Car – Tuesday at NYI – Saturday at MTL – so they could bring up a Hagelin for the games through send him down Sat to play for AHL this weekend call him back for Tuesday and send down till Sat in MTL.

  18. NYR_Fan – No sense in calling up MZA to be scratched. Who r u taking out of the lineup to put him in? Won’t be Deveaux. They want him in to help Prust out so he doesn’t do all the rough stuff.

  19. I voted already for our District Attorney, than surrender in his office under condition, that I will have separate cell with a cable TV. + NHL package. Long Live Democracy and I want it NOW!

  20. See, I was awake and still didn’t read the complete rules. Carp I assume that entering tomorrow as specified will not be construed as entering twice.

  21. Stranger Nation on

HWirth – you are correct, forgot about that signing, has he been actually sighted at a Ranger facility?

  22. I just spoke with Carp and he said that people who posted predictions in this thread will be disqualified. Especially this d-nuzzle Rags_AD.

  23. Doodie Machetto on

Carp. you MUST do something about that Cosmopolitan ad at the top of the page. It is driving me crazy.

  24. HW, we’re a more skilled team with Zuccarello in the lineup. I don’t know what exactly I would do, but maybe Dubinsky should move down to the third line for a bit…in all honestly….

let him work his way back up, the fact is that he isn’t playing well enough right now…maybe he needs a kick in the aasen…

  25. Mister Delaware on

    Rangers: 3
    Senators: 2
GWG: Dubinsky (open net, then Ottawa scores later to pull it back to 1)
    Rangers shots: 24
    Ottawa shots: 27

    Other goals: Avery, Sauer

  26. Mister Delaware on

“I don’t know what exactly I would do, but maybe Dubinsky should move down to the third line for a bit…in all honestly….”

I don’t see this. You demote based on lack of effort or blowing easy chances. Dubinsky is working, his line is effective, Rangers are winning … had he scored an EN I imagine this wouldn’t even be a topic.

counting flowers on the wall, that dont bother me at all, playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51…..

  28. are the people who come on here can’t read and follow simple instructions? wtf? lol

oh and yeah, move Gaborik to fourth line and make room for MZA because Gaborik doesn’t dig in the corners too much! Playing on fourth line will teach Gaborik a lesson! ;)

don’t know about making the team more skillful with MZA but it will definitely make the team smaller lol

  29. eddie eddie eddie on

oh that what now…….there is no me and you………..2 things…..

  30. and forgot to mention… when it came to inserting Avery into the lineup people were screaming their heads off not to do it so not to disrupt team chemistry, but let’s somehow insert MZA into the line up and screw the chemistry? Double standards? i’d say so…

  31. I keep hearing you’re concerned about my happiness.
All that thought you’re giving me is conscience, I guess.
If I were walking in your shoes, I wouldn’t worry none.
While you and your friends are worrying ’bout me, I’m having lots of fun.

  32. CCCP – Totally agree with you which is why I say Newbury or Mitchell will be brought on an emergency basis.

  33. “You demote based on lack of effort or blowing easy chances.”

True, effort counts. But that doesn’t excuse a player from abysmal production or the from the possibility that he may fit better somewhere else. I want the kid to do well but I don’t see him a creative offensive player. I wouldn’t consider moving him to Boyle’s line a demotion. He may be a better fit on that line. Maybe if he played with Boyle and Prust he could ignite that line and himself too?

  34. “possibility that he may fit better somewhere else”

but he already fits pretty damn good with Richards and Cally. He’ll get his goals. the team is playing well… stop making excuses… nobody is calling MZA up…yet.

MZA for king of Norway! right? ;)

  35. LMAO @ #4…

    10) Ignore 2 through 9, and sit quietly at your desk .

  37. Torts already said once that he doesn’t want to call up MZA if he’s not going to give him significant minutes. I seriously doubt that he gets called up to play on the fourth line.

And, don’t mess with Gaborik. He’s on pace for a 40 goal season. Why would you want to disturb that?

  38. Wish I was on the high point again so SOMEONE would shoot into the slot at Eric on our PP. He’s always on their PK unit.
Can someone please start shooting the puck INTO the other teams PK unit stacking the slot, moving forward? We can’t hit the net anyway from there. So at least shoot it at their crowding PKers in front.

I wanted to post something from TSN.ca about the Blunden incident on Saturday. Here’s Kerry Fraser’s take on that play.

    http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=379919

    Kerry’s Response
This is my penalty assessment on the play after watching the entire episode:

MTL: 2-Minute Bench Minor Penalty – Too Many Men on the Ice
MTL: Mike Blunden – 5 Minutes Fighting
NYR: Ryan Callahan – 2 Minutes Instigating + 5 Minutes Fighting + 10 minutes misconduct
NYR: Brandon Dubinsky – 2 Minutes Roughing
MTL: Hal Gill – 2 Minutes Roughing
MTL: Petteri Nokelainen – 5 Minutes Fighting + Game Misconduct (secondary altercation)
NYR: Michael Sauer – 5 Minutes Fighting + Game Misconduct (secondary altercation)

Montreal would then place a man in the penalty box to serve the bench minor and New York would have the option to place a man in the box to serve Ryan Callahan’s minor or the logical move would be to have Brandon Dubinsky serve his minor on the clock so as not to sacrifice another player in the box when cancelling out the coincident major and minor penalties. The teams would play 4 on 4 (Not 5 on 3…)

    Now the long answer:

Clearly Montreal had Too Many Men on the ice when Mike Blunden came onto the ice and made body contact with Brandon Dubinsky while Blunden’s retiring teammate was still physically on the ice. (Rule 74.1 – If in the course of making a substitution, either the player entering the game or the player retiring from the ice surface plays the puck with his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical contact with an opposing player while either the player entering the game or the retiring player is actually on the ice, then the infraction of “too many men on the ice” will be called.)

Dubinsky clearly had received the puck on the stretch pass and would be deemed in possession; therefore the check that was put on him by Blunden could not be deemed “interference”. The contact was a perfectly administered body check (shoulder to chest) and would have been deemed legal save for the fact that Montreal had six skaters on the ice.

Take a breath here, Habs fans, as I attempt to make a plausible (or feeble) explanation as to why it might have been viewed otherwise on the ice by the ref(s). With the ragged line change the initial focus of the ref(s) might have been on the change and not on Dubinsky receiving the pass just prior to impact. Once impact was made the puck was clearly long gone from the immediate vicinity of the check. While this was the wrong assessment on a bang-bang play like this, a quick shift of visual focus of attention can result in a missed call. Blunden perhaps took the refs by surprise as much as he did Dubinsky. Plausible or feeble; you make the call!

To address another point in your questions, just because a penalty for Too Many Men is called it would not negate any other illegal act that took place on the play. For example if Blunden had slashed, punched, tripped, elbowed or fouled Dubinsky in some fashion he would be penalized accordingly and in addition to the Too Many Men penalty. If in fact Dubinsky did not have the puck or it was a reasonable distance from him then an interference penalty could conceivably be called. Not the case here, however.

In a perfect world an instigator penalty would have been assessed to Callahan for the distance he travelled to grab and start a fight with Blunden. The referee could then send a clear message that the initial infraction was being called (Too Many Men on the ice) and if restraint had been shown the non-offending team (Rangers) would go on the power play. Not the case here either as the wrong message was sent and the Rangers gained a two-man advantage.

The Rangers were able to score one power play goal with the two-man advantage.

That’s the plain “No Sugar and K.I.S.S.” answer.

  50. Wicky©news flash, anyone on the ice is in a"vulnerable position" on

I just like the fact that the correct call did not involve interference at all. There was NO interference on that play, just a good clean hit like a few of us said..

The officials on the ice just made the wrong call (not like that ever happens)

Didn’t kerry fraser have the never out of place hair??

  51. “but he already fits pretty damn good with Richards and Cally. He’ll get his goals. the team is playing well… stop making excuses”

CCCP! LMAO!! I’m making excuses for what? For why Dubi is struggling? He’s got enough of them already….

Let me know when/if he has 15 goals this season…

    Yes, I meant adismal….

  52. lol I wasn’t calling you drunk Eddie. wallets in the bag. looking for P.F lines you havent spat out already

  53. ilb – I agree, those standings are nice to see, even though it’s like looking in the mirror after losing weight, things will change quickly if you don’t keep doing the work :)

  54. bob The Builder (In search of.... Leonard Knee-moy) on

the worse thing about the stall on stall hit was the egregious nature of delivering punishment that was not part of the actual game flow….the NHL is doing the right thing even while many shout “pansification’…. they also need to finally acquiesce and make rinks larger…the game has well outgrown its 1970s image, and this will enhance the beautiful side…maybe players can learn how to throw hip checks and stuff…u dont need guys heads popping off like rock ‘em sock ‘em robots

    ro-bob-ic

  55. Rangers: 4
    Senators: 1
GWG: Zherdev (tipped past Elliot from a Wade Redden shot with 15 minutes left in the third)
    Rangers shots: 28
    Ottawa shots: 27

Other notes: Heatley scores Ottawa’s lone goal off a Volochenkov redirect. Naslund and Gomez score empty netters after Elliot is pulled with two minutes left in the third.

  56. HWirth – Barring injury, I don’t see them calling anyone up for the Sens game, since Torts always seems to go with the same lineup after a win. And really, that’s the only game they’d need to call someone up in advance. At home, the Whale is a mere hour-and-a-half drive from the Garden. The Islanders and Montreal tack about another hour on that commute. In other words, they could easily get a player to the rink if Torts sees any irregularities. I think you’ll probably see Newberry winning a trip to Florida for the pre-turkeyday skate. That is, unless there’s a melt down on first line, in which case we’ll see Zuccarello make an appearance.

  57. iWicky (Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass) on

    ILB
I’m a bit amazed honestly, my initial thought during that thread was everyone was so passionate about their stance (whatever it was) on the issue.

But now it seems like everyone cares nothing about it at all so everyone was just griping to gripe or had a very biased or uninformed opinion of it and do not want to admit they had the incorrect knee jerk reaction.

Either way it is a bit disappointing IMHO.

    Brett: Sprite.
Jules: Sprite, good. You mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down?
    Brett: Go right ahead.
    Jules: Ah, hit the spot.

  61. Is this thing on?

Not necessarily, wicky….I for one, still have the same opinion. Which is the hit was legal and clean itself. And I could care less about whether it was too many man. And it wasn’t an interference at all. My point, again, is that the hit was sneaky and dirty from a point of view there was no way Dubinsky could anticipate the hit no matter how careful he was on the ice. He could’ve sustained significant injury. Sometimes we forgot the hockey is an entertainment. And it isn’t a boxing or MMA type of entertainment. There is much more to hockey than hits and fights. And there is a reason hockey players require helmets. And I have to admit, I like fighting and I hope it doesn’t disappear from hockey. And I love clean, hard hitting. But I hate when the players do not have any respect for one another. That, IMO, was one of those hits. Just imagine you are about to accept the pass, you look up, and there is nobody but the linesman that could be on your way. You accept the pass, salivating at the opportunity on the breakaway, and BOOM- the linesman hits you hard. Cleanly. How would you feel?

  65. Wicky, another thing. Fighting is allowed in NHL. And we all like a good, clean, meaningful fight when two players fight each other. In the face. But when somebody sucker punches a player (legally, cleanly, in the face) we all know it’s dirty and requires severe punishment. Like that one, for example:

I consider the hit by Blunden a sucker punch.

Well first answer, not sure how I would feel because if I was playing like dubi torts would have me glued to the bench and I wouldn’t be seeing a whole lot of ice time. But dubi is a “special” case.

If it happened to me in a game I should pay attention is how i would feel, but I tend to take responsibility for things I am involved in even at times when I probably shouldn’t.

As far as the Johnson sucker punch (sounds painful right?), I think they are two totally different situations. Johnson was pure sucker and should have had his assen kicked right there by anyone and everyone.

Johnson had what I can only guess as pure cheap shot malicious intent, period. The play was totally over.

    Blunden

  81. iWicky (Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass) on

    To continue (sorry)
Blunden, was what would seem to be for all intent and purposes, simply coming on the ice for a line change during play and delivering a clean legal body check.

Now I do not know what is going on in blunden’s head at any point and time, but that is what it “appeared” to be. If blunden was thinking to himself I’m going to kill that dubi guy first chance I get and I don’t care how or when at that was his sole purpose, then it might have been a bit sneaky.

Personally I think he would have hit anybody there and most players would have in the same situation. Just my opinion though

  82. Wicky, are you sure he had malicious intent? I would guess he regrets it right now. And do you know why it ended Beuk’s career? Because there was no way Beuk could expect it. Now, let me ask you. What if he punched him when the play was still going on, and not from the back, but from Beuk’s side, where he would still not be able to see it. Would that still be a sucker punch? Of, course! But, hey, if on the ice perhaps you should expect to be punched every time. We do expect them to keep their head up when on the ice, or else they can get hit, right? But not when there is nobody to hit them, Wicky. That’s why I consider it to be a sneaky, dirty hit. Has nothing to do with it being clean…

  83. ORR, I think Kovalsuck’s contract is singlehandedly bankrupting the Debbie’s organization – we should be more thankful towards him for his work in ruining that franchise!

  84. Look, my point is simple. The players should start respecting each other. And I’m not only talking about sucker punches, or blatant elbows to the head. That is obvious. But maybe they should realize that hitting a player hard when it’s not expected can lead to disastrous complications. There is a way to do it without making the game we love a figure skating. I’d much rather they promote that than making pansified calls like they made last night ( Bruins-Islanders). Gosh, that was the first time I agreed with Milbury when he called two calls “pansification”

  86. maybe he asked for a trade since he obviously wasn’t going to get any chance at the NHL level…sounds familiar…

  87. If he asked out because they weren’t giving him a chance at the NHL, the Caps is not where he wanted to go. They have more depth than we do at defense.

  88. stevezipay Steve Zipay
Kundratek due $816,666 in 12-13, then RFA . Bouchard $770,000 this year, then RFA

Doesn’t seem like $$ an issue in this one.

  89. Maybe Sather didn’t get the memo that we may not be as deep on defense as originally projected? You know, the fishing season and all…

  90. According to Waseka, CT are also training with Barb Underhill.

Why don’t the Rangers just hire her?

  91. Kundratek was clearly no longer considered part of the future and asked for a trade. Neither of the two players will ever become NHL regulars so this is all for nothing

  92. I was kidding too, ilb. I had leftovers for lunch today! Slightly disappointed, even though they were still delicious.

  93. Ohhh….by the way, MZA did cast a spell on me last year, FYI. Don’t byfuglien with wizards. Prust sayin’.

I’m sick of defending him. Many fans believe the guys is good and will be an NHL’er. He lead the team in CORSI last season. Haters want to say that’s because “he played against weaker competition”. LOL, please. He played serious minutes for a while. Do I have to look up Carp’s reviews last year and see what we all said about him? Honestly, he was on the only guys on the team that knew how to pass last year. And, he played with some serious jam. “Little Monster”.

Now, if you think he doesn’t fit with the identity of this team, that’s another story entirely and I may agree…

  94. True Blue Mike on

NYR i have been all for MZA since he signed with the Rangers but i am just not sure he has a spot in our top six. Do i think he is a top six player, definitely. Go around the league and Zuke could play in the top six of at least 15 other teams. Honestly i think a line of Zuke, Step, Gaborik would be great. All im saying is we are wasting Zuke’s career. So trade him for something worthwhile.

  95. If we were to trade him alone right now, Mike, I don’t think we get much of anything…maybe a 2nd round pick/prospect. He’s still not a bonafide NHL’er and I don’t think his stock is that high around the league.

FWIW, I think Torts has been completely honest with the fans about the situation. I do appreciate how much he cares about his players. He has acknowledged that Zuke can only play top minutes to be effective. Not a fourth line role. He wants the kid to play just as much as we do. That’s why he’s in the AHL.

Guess I see the blunden incident as more of an unfortunate collision like the shanny knuble incident than a Johnson sucker punch.

I understand (I think) that you are talking about players in vulnerable or defenceless position or unaware of an impact. The only issue I have with that is the NHL is an impact sport.

I think teaching players awareness and how not to put themselves in vulnerable positions is every bit as important as no targeting the head.

I also think getting rid of the instigator rule and letting players police themselves would help,

limiting the shoulder and elbow pad size and rigidity is another step to be taken.

And penalizing and fining players who put themselves in vulnerable positions specifically along the boards.

  97. Big win on the road……
