Sean Avery: New York Ranger again

Sean Avery, soon to be officially recalled after clearing re-entry waivers (in other words, none of the other 29 teams/coaches had any interest in him at 1/4 of his salary).

Now, does he play Thursday, or do the Rangers go with their same lineup after their best game of the season, by far?

Here we go. Cue up the calliope (that’s circus music).

Sean Avery Recalled from Connecticut

New York, November 1, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Sean Avery has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Avery, 31, tallied a goal in his season debut with Connecticut on October 28 at Adirondack after missing the first seven games of the season due to a shoulder injury.  He has registered one goal, along with seven penalty minutes and 11 shots on goal in two games this season.  Avery returns to the Rangers where he has registered 42 goals and 78 assists for 120 points, along with 580 penalty minutes in 249 games over five seasons.  The Rangers have posted a record of 129-89-31 with him in the lineup since originally being acquired on February 5, 2007.

The Pickering, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers with John Seymour from Los Angeles, in exchange for Jason Ward, Marc-Andre Cliché and Jan Marek on February 5, 2007.  New York re-acquired Avery on March 3, 2009, claiming him off re-entry waivers from Dallas.  He was originally signed as a free agent by Detroit on September 21, 1999.

  1. Given the fact Christy and Wolski played OK against Soft Joe and the Shirks will Torts bench Bell Biv Devaux in favour of our saviour?

  2. I for one am hoping for lots more Erik Christensen because his one good game per month is invaluable to this franchise

  3. tr!!!

Lloyd, I’m with you on that one. They should sit him until Nov. 30. By then he’ll be due for another assist or two.

    Good afternoon, Sally!

Just imagine a line of Christensen, Wofski and Gabby that could be at least partially consistent. That would be nice

  6. I have actually been pleased with what I see as pretty rapid progression for Michael Del Zaster. Maybe he takes a baby step backwards now and then but for the most part he takes steps forward.

  7. the kid deveaux deserves another few games. played well along boards a real big body. less expensive verison of rupp.

  8. I think MDZ has played pretty good so far. He did not score last night but he had 1 very skilled move . the guy is 21, and playing much better then last year.

the rangers can win with MDZ in the lineup especailly if he is on the 3rd pair if Staal comes back…

  9. less expensive version of Rupp.

Well put, eric. He also took as many fights away from Prust as Rupp does.

  10. devoux did play well last night much better then newbury.

he was strong on the puck and was not out of position at all. to bad EC had a good game last night.

  12. LOL I love it. Avery is like the horror movie villain that just wont die. Woulda been the perfect analogy if he cleared yesterday. 6 on one/half dozen on the other I suppose. We’ll see what happens. NYR always keeps it interesting that’s for sure.

Watching Prust get wheeled around by Clowe was disheartening, but it served 2 purposes – one it showed why Prust has respect in that locker room – with Rupp out and he being the only Ranger to ever win more than 50% of his fights he took on a heavy weight. Two – he took their best power forward out of the mix for the first five minutes of the game and Sharks’ O seemed out of sync the rest of the period. No big shots landed – took the opponent off their game early, set an example for the team – that’s why he is “The Prust”.

The scheduling gods have come to our side. The Ducks are on the back end of a long road trip with Detroit on Saturday to finish it up. As we know they were in Sweden, so we may be catching a break on the timing of this game. They scored only 6 goals in last 4 games and play Caps tonite.

    Heave Ho – 2 in a row!

    Openly lie (ha)
    And live on their money

  19. Avery For Prez on

Carp.. Love the blog, read it everyday… I think this is a good move for the Rangers by bringing Avery back. I was at the game last night with my dad and we were talking about how Christiansen just seems to skate around the ice with out a clue for 45 seconds to a min then just goes back to his spot on the bench… real waste of a roster spot if you ask me.. I did like the way Wolski played last night though..

  20. “I’d like to see Deveaux get another shot with Avery on an energy line.”

Aves – BRich – Bahama Bomba

  21. I wouldn’t move Richards away from Dubi and Cally right yet. I might let Avery play with Bel Biv Deveaux a/k/a the Bahama Bomba and Wolski for a bit.

  22. I can’t buy that Christensen decided to play hard because he doesn’t want to lose his job to Avery. I think Christensen has always been borderline on this team and he gets scratched enough to know that his tenure on the team was/is in serious trouble.

As I like to say, Christensen is a rule change away from being 100% irrelevant in the NHL.

  23. Look, I’m not trying to bash Torts, nor am I saying the recall was right or wrong – I’m not smart enough to know, so I’ll just watch and see – but you can’t tell me that the coach is very happy about this. He can spin the BS any way he wants (“the right hockey decision right now”) but there’s no way he ever expected to see Avery back with the big club. No coach would bash a player like he did if he ever expected to see him again. The “we have better players” comment is nothing short of “he sucks and I don”t want him”.

No doubt in my mind this call was made over Tort’s objection. I’m sure Torts was hoping someone would put in claim so he didn;t have to deal with it.

Were you watching Christensen last night? I thought he was fantastic. Any other night, you’re right, but last night, not even close.

  25. Avery for Pres

if you had just waited a bit between hiccups, you;d have seen Christensen set up two spectacular goals.

He isn’t the traditional forward, but winning teams often have one or two folks who have special skills…perhaps the tendency to find fault with him at every opportunity is too ingrained to pass up. Rangers have tolerated players a lot worse than him for long periods in the past…..

Names like ah, Anson Carter, ah, Roszival, ah, Malik,ah Poti…….( I don’t care how much Poti is a factor with the Caps, he was Mr Nowhere with Rangers.)

Plus minus is a bogus stat!

  27. EC and WW had good games for sure and WW’s was his second in a row. But again, if he isn’t in the top 6, don’t even play him.

huginsky had a good game as well, hope he keeps it going.

    Loved AA’s goal

still not sold on mdz yet for what it is worth, he definitely has flashes of brilliance, but then so does EC!

  28. orr
didn’t we sign mcdonut after he won a stanley cup with the devs…oh wait that was the guy we traded for him…

  29. Am I the only one that doesn’t think Plus/Minus is a bogus stat? Granted, I didn’t play hockey so according to some people my opinion doesn’t matter. I think a better way to do it would be by line or pairing but I still think it’s a decent stat.

  30. Oh! and also – Del Zaster’s Plus/Minus is so good because our PP has been so good. I am really excited to see that transformation.

  31. Hmm, actually, Wick, maybe we *should* sign Cup winning Devils, if we can trade them to a gullible GM. I wouldn’t mind a few more McDonuts. Actually, I wouldn’t mind an actual donut. I haven’t had on in a while.

I can’t complain aboot Del Zaster. I think he’s having a decent season so far, compared to last.

  32. Right. Good point. Well he has been good on the PP and so has the PP in general.

See what an idiot I am?

  33. billybleedsblue on

    “Once…twice…three times an Avery.”

    Lol, Felicity.

And go take a Doodie, Machetto.

  34. “Am I the only one that doesn’t think Plus/Minus is a bogus stat? ”

Probably. After all, Marek Malik has a career +/- in the plus. How good do you think he is?

There are numerous problems with +/- stats. If you play against the opponent’s top line all the time your rating is likely to be lower and the opposite if you only go against the other team’s 4th line.

You can get a plus or a minus without having anything to do with the goal. If on defense you could have your man blanketed, but somebody else gets beat yet you get a minus. On offense you could be in your own zone while somebody has a breakaway and scores and you get a plus.

This actually happened in a game, but I don’t remember who it happened to. A player passed the puck and went off the ice for a line change. The guy he passed to scored. The player got an assist on the goal, but wasn’t on the ice when it was scored so his replacement got the plus.

    The plus/minus stat means nothing.

  35. Not a good stat … depends with which linemates, defense pairs you play, and against whom, and if you play on a team that’s good 5-on-5, etc. And it definitely, definitely, definitely is not a defensive stat.

  36. Well what if Plus/Minus was done by defensive pairing of offensive line? Would that be more accurate?

  37. Stranger Nation on

While not seeing stat as a make/break data point – if you look at the people at the top and bottom of the list it makes more sense. One can always use outlier examples as stated earlier, but over time the trend seems to make sense. It is no mistake the Em is -7 – that much is true!

  38. speaking of thorton/lindros and the shark mascot, anyone else remember when lindros was with the rangers and fought joe when he was with the bruins and lindros broke his face with a punch (literally)

  39. That reminds me, wicky. Is it just me or is this team way less physical than last year? Also, has any Ranger come close to not being embarrassed in a fight yet?

  40. Stranger Nation on

While discussing stats – one of the most misleading is the secondary assist. It would be interesting to see primary and secondary broken out – both 5v5 and PP. Mostly take assists away from Dmen and Wusskie. The players’ agents love it – that’s for sure.

  41. manny
they do seem to be lacking “grit/edge” a bit and I have not seen an overwhelmingly victorious ranger in any scrap yet.

I mean, there seemed to be a lot more scrums and dust ups in the early part of last season (and I think the rangers play better in those games) than this year. The games seem to be lacking a lot of physicality compared to previous, so it is a bit disappointing.

I blame shanny and his stupid fines and suspensions!

  42. Torts adds to his “wonderful” from last night: “Joe hasn’t won a g–damn thing in this league.”

  43. Pat Leonard- NYDN:
“Yeah it caught me off-guard when it was brought up after the game,” Tortorella said at the team’s Greenburgh practice facility Tuesday morning. “It surprised me, and I’ve never heard a player say that. Joe’s a heck of a player, but here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a g–damn thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything. So what he should do is just shut up. It was uncalled for, it was classless, and I’ve never had it happen like that before.”

  44. : 2:49PM: Pat Leonard of the Daily News has this quote from Torts on Thornton:

“Yeah it caught me off-guard when it was brought up after the game,” Tortorella said at the team’s Greenburgh practice facility Tuesday morning. “It surprised me, and I’ve never heard a player say that. Joe’s a heck of a player, but here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a g–damn thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything. So what he should do is just shutup. It was uncalled for, it was classless, and I’ve never had it happen like that before.”

When told about the comments last night, Tortorella responded “wonderful.”

Original Post: Last night, following the Rangers 5-2 defeat of the Sharks, San Jose captain Joe Thornton called the Rangers “soft” and thought that his team should have picked up the two points.

Thornton apparently didn’t mean to insult the Rangers with his comment:

Thornton says “soft” was not the right word to describe Rangers. He was frustrated says it was a game SJ should have won with NYR struggling

  45. If only I played hockey, then I could know….what more would I know? Where is that guy? He disappeared after making that comment.

I just read that in Ace Frehley’s upcoming book, he talks aboot how Gene Simmons gave him crabs. Ugh! I can’t believe MSG let that crabby bastard on Garden ice! Disgusting!

  46. I can’t say it enough, but I’m shocked at how well the Bahama Bomba played. I really hope he isn’t taken out of the lineup. Pop him on the 4th line with Avery and someone else. I liked that Torts rewarded him with some PP time at the end of the game. Classy move. Yeah, I said classy!

  47. That is pretty Gross!!

I can’t remember that guys name. It started with a “b” maybe and was all lower case. I will give him credit though – most people say “I am not going to waste my time explaining…” and then proceed to explain for days to come. That guy actually meant it!

  48. Yea, isn’t is a shame that Avery came back…I guess that means that our “penalty-free”, “offside-free”, and “unlimited scoring” games that we’ve been watching for the first 10 games are a thing of the past now.

I like the way MDZ has been progressing lately. It is looking like he is regaining some of that confidence he had lost. He’s not all the way back but he’s slowly getting there. He’s one of the few players that is actually taking a slapshot from the point. If he keeps doing that, something good will come of it. As for his +/-, we all agree that those stats can be deceiving but if you’re not going to give him props for a +7, then you shouldn’t give him grief if he ever starts slipping into the minuses.

  49. Torts said…….”Joe Thornton hasn’t won a goddam thing in this league”

bravo Torts. tell that piece of soft garbage to stick it. after they got whupped by the Rangers, dumbo Joe had the audacity to belittle the team that cleaned his clock.

and good for the return to the old strategy of playing behind the opponent’s net, which keeps the star players of the opponent 200 feet from being dangerous. it worked against the Caps before, and it works vs the Sharks, keeping softie Joe in his own zone. and Avery also plays that style very well.

I think it has some value when you place it heavily in context. For instance, you can only compare players against their teammates, and then you have to factor in the amount of ice time , the linemates, and the quality of the opposition.

On another note, I’m far from a fan of Tortorella, and still don’t think he’s a great coach. But his comments to Thornton were perfect. And well-deserved for a guy who, like he said, has won nothing. Funny how Boston had to trade him away before they won a cup. My guess is San Jose will need to do the same thing.

  78. Doodie Machetto on

phil, San Jose will have to trade Thornton, as well as a good portion of their team. It’s time to blow it up in San Jose. The pieces they have just aren’t right.

  79. Great point, Jimbo – That is one pure place. She married this guy Matthew Barney though who is a famous artist and is from, I believe, California

  80. Maloney’s point – and it’s an accurate one – is that Avery is the only lower line player on the Rangers who’s capable of playing on the top line.

  81. eddie eddie eddie on

Dave Maloney is very astute IMO…love listening to the radio feed because of him…..i would trade him for Joe (it’s hard) M any day

  82. I am neither an Avery supporter nor a hater – merely a fan of this flippin’ team. I said before the season started that Sean Avery pretty much has no fit on this team anymore. Surprisingly, another spot that has no fit is the Top Line LW. Therefore, Sean has the skating ability to end up there. I don’t think that will happen consistently but he should probably get a look or two.

  90. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Biggest problem with +/- is that they award pluses and debit minuses on extra attacker / empty net goals. And they refuse to fix that. Dumber than The Three Stooges on their dumbest day, but that is the NBL, the Numbnuts Bettman League.

Another major problem with the plus/minus count for each player is that you can get a plus if your team scores making the score 5-1 instead of 5-0. You also get a plus when your team scores an even-strength goal to break a tie. There is no accounting for the importance, or lack of same, for each goal, assist or plus, or minus charged to the other team’s players. I think there should be. I have a points-award system for that, but saving it for sometime in December, to share, here.

  91. Doodie Machetto on

“So Jumbo Shrimp called the Rangers soft? I’m sure it’s out of frustration, but if I were Torts I’d use it as a motivation for our team…”

I agree. A lot of people are saying how Thornton didn’t have to worry about it being bulletin board material because the two teams won’t play against each other again this season (except in the Cup Final), but that doesn’t mean the Rangers shouldn’t use it as such anyway. They should send a message by pounding the crap out of the Ducks.

  92. Jonathan Toes, Rex Ryan’s favorite player.

    … and Anisimov, and Fedotenko.

Manny, can you at least ask him to phone or text you when he has his lunch?

  93. ok. here’s why +/- stinks. Against Ottawa, Wolski was +2. Against San Jose he was E. Did anybody watch those games and think he was better against Ottawa?

  94. so brich, gabby, cally, AA, step, huginsky, boyle, feds, prust, bahama bomba, rupp, and avery (once rupp is healthy) would be the lines/12forwards I would go with consistently.

  95. Doodie Machetto on

Six guys that provide little to no scoring? To me, Rupp and Deveaux would be the Pruchas.

  96. My problem with the Thornton thing is it’s such an absurdly-placed comment, you have to wonder if he even knows why he said it. His team was barely in the game, got thoroughly outplayed, and surrendered 5 goals. At no point did they close to getting themselves back into contention after going down three, looking for the most part like they collectively rolled over. You can’t make comments about the other team’s softness when your team didn’t even bother showing up.

  97. I heard an absurd rumor earlier that had me laughin….i heard edmonton and the rangers traded del zotto for gagner lol……………..BRILLIANT!

  98. Lloyd’s comments are spot on – Jumbo Joe must have been delusional when he said what he did – *he* had a lousy game, and so did his whole team….

  99. eddie eddie eddie on

To thornton’s credit, while the other sharks drive porches and mercedes benz, he drives a cadilac SUV

  100. iWicky (Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass) on

As opposed to ec and ww who are very out of place on the lower two lines? I would rather have guys that physically contribute on the lower lines than some that “might” occasional contribute offensively and provide nothing else.

Especially with a coach that doesn’t roll lines with any sort of equal time at all

  101. >>>this is too funny!

Now that wasn’t a nice thing to do! I thought those Scandinavians were supposed to be peaceful now, especially compared to their Viking days! ;-D

  102. Eddie, he just drives that kind of vehicle to compensate for the fact that he’s a playoff choker…the SUV has a more “manly” vibe to it….

  103. eddie eddie eddie on

jimbo – as i posted last season, heatly damn near ran over a kid in his porsche last year (talk about irony) where the players pull in and kids try to get autographs…..thornton pulled in and signed for about 10 minutes…..

  104. Jumbo, er, Jimbo I thought they were saying you made the “soft” comment.

Johnny LaRue, am I crazy or is that a lot of gum?

  105. eddie eddie eddie on

ec could finish the season with zero goals and zero body checks…impressive resume

  106. Hahaha!!! You think he, eddie? If so, Joe’s ears must be red and burning….

OK on Joe being good to the fans – that was nice – but dissing the team was a classless act, especially when NYR soundly beat his guys.

Heatly? I’m not at all surprised….

  107. Ouch again, Carp!

I reported on the Jumbo Joe “soft” quote last night right after I saw it on the post-game show, as did another poster just before I did – I didn’t “F5, F5, F5” before I posted it….

  108. lalalalalalala :) C3, hysterical video!

Good evening all! Just popping in….gotta run….til tomorrow!

    (Is it Thursday yet!!)

  109. From Chris Botta of the NY Times:

Avery was Tortorella’s final cut of training camp among the forwards, an NHL veteran suffering the indignity of having to leave the team on its season-opening European trip to join the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League. After taking some time to recover from a shoulder injury, Avery played for the Whale in a pair of wins this weekend. “He was great to the guys, great with me,” said Andre Deveaux(notes), who made his Rangers debut Monday on the fourth line after spending the opening month of the season in Connecticut. “I’m glad he is on my team.”

    so, BivBell likes him.

  110. eddie eddie eddie on

Hardly – THE AVERY is the kind of team mate I want….even after ec told the media that THE AVERY suckerpunched the Oiler or Flame…i forget…..few games later, as someone here posted…might have been wicky….THE AVERY fought a guy for nailing ec….THAT is my kind of mate……On the other hand why anyone would ever check ec is beyond me…a creampuff offers more resistance

  111. Carp, you seem to have a good rapport with the coach – how do you think he *really* feels about having #16 back up with the team? It really didn’t sound like he expected Aves to be back up here when the waiver news was announced…

  112. eddie eddie eddie on

my favorite episode is when B&B work for the fast food place, and someone orders “flies” huh huh huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh

  113. Sens playing in Boston tonight – if the B’s lose again (presently have lost 3 straight) there will be panic in beantown!

  114. Stranger Nation on

I only hate Torts when they lose, because its always the coaches fault. When they win, the players are tuning him out and playing their game. That much is obvious.

  115. Well, Torts can act all tough and everyone can wave their pom poms after Thorton’s unsportsman-like remark.

    Except it’s probably true!

SJ just finished with the Devs, B’s, Preds, Wings & Isles.

NYR scare nobody, and they beat a tired team last night.

Just hope Deveaux (who looked fine but who’s so tough his last fight was against Fedotenko!) and Strahlman solidify spots.

  116. Stranger Nation on

Biv bev has the same skating coach as MDZ. Both cannot lift their skates to take a stride. When MDZ is hustling back, it seems his skates never leave the ice. Whatever works for ya.

  117. Stranger Nation on

Yes, isles and Debbies very impressive this season. The offfenses are starting to rev it up, as they are in last and second to last in goals for.

    John taveras, where are you?

  118. Jimbo, I kind of stated the other day — unconvincingly to the coach-haters and Avery-lovers alike — that I think Tortorella is fine with this move. He needs a grinding guy right now.

Who’s better at that than Avery? I also think they called up Bel Biv Deveaux Saturday because they knew that they couldn’t get Avery through waivers before Monday’s game no matter what.
I think Avery would have been the recall the minute they figured Newbury was going back if not for the waivers period.

If Avery can prove to be one of the best 12 forwards on the team, he’ll stay. If not, he won’t. And yes that will be subjective and open to all sorts of interpretation from Tortorella-haters and Avery-adorers (who no doubt think Tortorella has already made up his mind to send Avery back to CT as soon as possible).

  119. I getcha, Carp – well, I hope he (Aves) manages to *not* “screw the pooch” and is actually valuable to the team. With the way they’re calling penalties these days, I wonder how long #16 will be on the ice before he’s abnished to the box….

  120. I’m just weary of all the drama – I’d like to see a team that plays well together (like they did last night) move forward – they should be improved on paper, and I’d like to see it happen on the ice.

  121. Stralman is an offensive minded Dman with reasonable size, but he is far from tough. He does have a good shot from the point. He also is a career -40 (on two bad teams, admittedly). He still would an upgrade over Woywitka. The issue is that he made close to $2M last year, and the Rangers are not willing to give him probably even half of that. He also might have some options in Sweden. I would reserve my judgement about Deveaux until he plays a couple of games. Even though he looked good last night, he is likely to sit in favor of #16. Unless WW’s groin requires more maintenance. He looked like he was trying to stretch a few times during the intermission by the end of 3rd.

  122. LW- Alex and I will be at the same time and spot on Thursday. You’re welcome to join us before the game. Just try and come in a little hungry, will ya?

  123. Yeah, ORR – I’m getting a bad feeling about Staal’s condition, though. They’re just keeping everything so quiet at this point that I’m wondering if we’re gonna see him at all in the first half of the season…

  124. The leftover Chinese comment, NYR – that’s the depressing one I was referring to…

  125. Joe never won a damn thing calling someone soft? That’s rich.

LOL how about showing up for just one game in the playoffs, guy?

  126. Selanne is lighting up the Caps tonight – I hope he gets it out of his system down there, and doesn’t bring his game up here tomorrow…

    3-0 Ducks, mid-second period..

Unbyfuglein real……thereafter a bunch of other shows including 80 tour in montreal (that was infamous Cincinnati crowd rush the arena and people died tour)….and a couple of times on the 82 tour (SD and LA – where THE CLASH opened for them)….always opened with Substitute into Can’t Explain)… get the entire show, on youtube, song by song, of the Sept 16, 79 show at the garden….The single greatest show i ever saw.

  133. eddie eddie eddie on

Re: Staal – remember late in Game 1 vs the Caps, Stall was falling down a lot and off balance…everyone thought it because he was playing 50 friggen minutes a game….but perhaps, these were merely signs of this concussion……

  134. That was some game, ORR – Ducks looked pretty tired at the end…….that kid Backstrom is some player, though…..damn!

  135. Quite a comeback by the Craps, though – those two teams look very strong….on a different level completely from what we’ve been seeing.

  136. Eddie, they sure look like a juggernaut – even when they were down 3-zip, they didn’t quit, and they have a lot of firepower – and Ovechkin was being benched for quite a time in this game!

Nik Backstrom really is an impressive player, though – I guess the craps drafted him a few years back, eh? Good damned pick!

  137. I looked up his background – first rounder, fourth pick overall – so he wasn’t a “sleeper” or a “surprise” good player….

  138. Im goin to the nov 26th game and I wanna meet skme of uz boneheads lol….nebody goin to that game? Carp, can I stop by?

  139. Roenick just said the Flames “failed to miss the playoffs last year”. I feel more adismal each second I watch this.

  140. LOL @ failed to miss playoffs! I heard it! Sutton got 5 games suspension for the hit on Landeskog.

Alfredson is out with concussion like symptoms, btw. Did WoWo get away wih a hit to the head?

  141. cccp
nope, shanny with the double standard in an attempt to pansify the game as much as he can on his power trip!!

  142. As a bruising, legendary, power forward, in one of the greatest eras of pro hockey…how many times do you think Brendan Shanahan (intentionally or unintentionally) dished out a headshot? He certainly didn’t play the game like a pansy. He was feared.

  143. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Lw – I love the world adismal… sounds exactly as it would mean.. If it were a word…

  144. Shany was a fierce player! Definite bruiser!

“Becareful what you wish for” Everyone screamed for Campbell’s head. Many of these suspensions would never happen under Colin. Now we have sheriff Shanahan who’s definitely power-tripping big time!

  145. Well jeez, it’s not like we don’t have a lot of defense prospects…..true, some of them may not be so great, but if Franson isn’t good enough to make the Leafs defense roster, do we really need another “maybe” guy?

  146. C3, it’s the league office that’s behind all this head-hits stuff. If Colie was still doing the job, he would have to be making these calls and suspensions, too, I think….

  147. Isnt Cody Franson injured? He’s a good prospect, though. Can play major minutes and somewhat physical. I would not mind if we got him.

  148. LOL! It’s on the widget!

Franson had 8 goals, 20 assists last season with the Preds, and was a +10

I don’t know what the story is, but I guess they have some depth on defense, and want to add a forward possibly. Umm, Wolski?? :P

  149. Well, you now have a “reputation”, ORR – so everything you say with respect to possible player moves is suspect!! ;-D

With all this talk about acquiring more defensemen (Strahlman?), it sure is looking like we’re not going to be seeing Staal anytime in the near or medium future….

  150. The hobbit is still so young with alot of potential, came into camp better than last year…

I don’t think it’s worth it unless we are going after a guy like Suter or Weber….we could do a season without Stahl, it’s not the end of the world…other guys can and will step up…I don’t think the Rangers should move their best prospect for a guy like Franson…

    Woof Wolski?

  151. LMFAO…

@BDubi17 on twitter now too. Just what we need, another guy trying to be chairman of the social comittee, eh @MichaelDelZotto ?

  152. eddie eddie eddie on

Of course THE AVERY deserves credit for the sharks win… can you say otherwise with a straight face?

  153. Do reporters even ask Torts about Staal anymore?

Is there some secret agreement among reporters not to ask about him since it is clear that he will be out for the season?
