Sean Avery Recalled from Connecticut
New York, November 1, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Sean Avery has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Avery, 31, tallied a goal in his season debut with Connecticut on October 28 at Adirondack after missing the first seven games of the season due to a shoulder injury. He has registered one goal, along with seven penalty minutes and 11 shots on goal in two games this season. Avery returns to the Rangers where he has registered 42 goals and 78 assists for 120 points, along with 580 penalty minutes in 249 games over five seasons. The Rangers have posted a record of 129-89-31 with him in the lineup since originally being acquired on February 5, 2007.
The Pickering, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers with John Seymour from Los Angeles, in exchange for Jason Ward, Marc-Andre Cliché and Jan Marek on February 5, 2007. New York re-acquired Avery on March 3, 2009, claiming him off re-entry waivers from Dallas. He was originally signed as a free agent by Detroit on September 21, 1999.

Watching Prust get wheeled around by Clowe was disheartening, but it served 2 purposes – one it showed why Prust has respect in that locker room – with Rupp out and he being the only Ranger to ever win more than 50% of his fights he took on a heavy weight. Two – he took their best power forward out of the mix for the first five minutes of the game and Sharks’ O seemed out of sync the rest of the period. No big shots landed – took the opponent off their game early, set an example for the team – that’s why he is “The Prust”.
The scheduling gods have come to our side. The Ducks are on the back end of a long road trip with Detroit on Saturday to finish it up. As we know they were in Sweden, so we may be catching a break on the timing of this game. They scored only 6 goals in last 4 games and play Caps tonite.

I was at the game last night with my dad and we were talking about how Christiansen just seems to skate around the ice with out a clue for 45 seconds to a min then just goes back to his spot on the bench… real waste of a roster spot if you ask me.. I did like the way Wolski played last night though..

I can’t buy that Christensen decided to play hard because he doesn’t want to lose his job to Avery. I think Christensen has always been borderline on this team and he gets scratched enough to know that his tenure on the team was/is in serious trouble.
As I like to say, Christensen is a rule change away from being 100% irrelevant in the NHL.
Look, I’m not trying to bash Torts, nor am I saying the recall was right or wrong – I’m not smart enough to know, so I’ll just watch and see – but you can’t tell me that the coach is very happy about this. He can spin the BS any way he wants (“the right hockey decision right now”) but there’s no way he ever expected to see Avery back with the big club. No coach would bash a player like he did if he ever expected to see him again. The “we have better players” comment is nothing short of “he sucks and I don”t want him”.
No doubt in my mind this call was made over Tort’s objection. I’m sure Torts was hoping someone would put in claim so he didn;t have to deal with it.

if you had just waited a bit between hiccups, you;d have seen Christensen set up two spectacular goals.
He isn’t the traditional forward, but winning teams often have one or two folks who have special skills…perhaps the tendency to find fault with him at every opportunity is too ingrained to pass up. Rangers have tolerated players a lot worse than him for long periods in the past…..

Am I the only one that doesn’t think Plus/Minus is a bogus stat? Granted, I didn’t play hockey so according to some people my opinion doesn’t matter. I think a better way to do it would be by line or pairing but I still think it’s a decent stat.
Oh! and also – Del Zaster’s Plus/Minus is so good because our PP has been so good. I am really excited to see that transformation.

Probably. After all, Marek Malik has a career +/- in the plus. How good do you think he is?
There are numerous problems with +/- stats. If you play against the opponent’s top line all the time your rating is likely to be lower and the opposite if you only go against the other team’s 4th line.
You can get a plus or a minus without having anything to do with the goal. If on defense you could have your man blanketed, but somebody else gets beat yet you get a minus. On offense you could be in your own zone while somebody has a breakaway and scores and you get a plus.
This actually happened in a game, but I don’t remember who it happened to. A player passed the puck and went off the ice for a line change. The guy he passed to scored. The player got an assist on the goal, but wasn’t on the ice when it was scored so his replacement got the plus.
The plus/minus stat means nothing.
I don’t think it means nothing entirely, but it is a deceptive stat.

Not a good stat … depends with which linemates, defense pairs you play, and against whom, and if you play on a team that’s good 5-on-5, etc. And it definitely, definitely, definitely is not a defensive stat.

While discussing stats – one of the most misleading is the secondary assist. It would be interesting to see primary and secondary broken out – both 5v5 and PP. Mostly take assists away from Dmen and Wusskie. The players’ agents love it – that’s for sure.

they do seem to be lacking “grit/edge” a bit and I have not seen an overwhelmingly victorious ranger in any scrap yet.
I mean, there seemed to be a lot more scrums and dust ups in the early part of last season (and I think the rangers play better in those games) than this year. The games seem to be lacking a lot of physicality compared to previous, so it is a bit disappointing.

I like the way MDZ has been progressing lately. It is looking like he is regaining some of that confidence he had lost. He’s not all the way back but he’s slowly getting there. He’s one of the few players that is actually taking a slapshot from the point. If he keeps doing that, something good will come of it. As for his +/-, we all agree that those stats can be deceiving but if you’re not going to give him props for a +7, then you shouldn’t give him grief if he ever starts slipping into the minuses.

I think it has some value when you place it heavily in context. For instance, you can only compare players against their teammates, and then you have to factor in the amount of ice time , the linemates, and the quality of the opposition.

I am neither an Avery supporter nor a hater – merely a fan of this flippin’ team. I said before the season started that Sean Avery pretty much has no fit on this team anymore. Surprisingly, another spot that has no fit is the Top Line LW. Therefore, Sean has the skating ability to end up there. I don’t think that will happen consistently but he should probably get a look or two.
And don’t forget to mention “the groin” a few more times, Joe M…....

Biggest problem with +/- is that they award pluses and debit minuses on extra attacker / empty net goals. And they refuse to fix that. Dumber than The Three Stooges on their dumbest day, but that is the NBL, the Numbnuts Bettman League.
Another major problem with the plus/minus count for each player is that you can get a plus if your team scores making the score 5-1 instead of 5-0. You also get a plus when your team scores an even-strength goal to break a tie. There is no accounting for the importance, or lack of same, for each goal, assist or plus, or minus charged to the other team’s players. I think there should be. I have a points-award system for that, but saving it for sometime in December, to share, here.

I agree. A lot of people are saying how Thornton didn’t have to worry about it being bulletin board material because the two teams won’t play against each other again this season (except in the Cup Final), but that doesn’t mean the Rangers shouldn’t use it as such anyway. They should send a message by pounding the crap out of the Ducks.

My problem with the Thornton thing is it’s such an absurdly-placed comment, you have to wonder if he even knows why he said it. His team was barely in the game, got thoroughly outplayed, and surrendered 5 goals. At no point did they close to getting themselves back into contention after going down three, looking for the most part like they collectively rolled over. You can’t make comments about the other team’s softness when your team didn’t even bother showing up.

Jimbo, I kind of stated the other day—unconvincingly to the coach-haters and Avery-lovers alike—that I think Tortorella is fine with this move. He needs a grinding guy right now.
Who’s better at that than Avery? I also think they called up Bel Biv Deveaux Saturday because they knew that they couldn’t get Avery through waivers before Monday’s game no matter what.
I think Avery would have been the recall the minute they figured Newbury was going back if not for the waivers period.
If Avery can prove to be one of the best 12 forwards on the team, he’ll stay. If not, he won’t. And yes that will be subjective and open to all sorts of interpretation from Tortorella-haters and Avery-adorers (who no doubt think Tortorella has already made up his mind to send Avery back to CT as soon as possible).

I getcha, Carp – well, I hope he (Aves) manages to not “screw the pooch” and is actually valuable to the team. With the way they’re calling penalties these days, I wonder how long #16 will be on the ice before he’s abnished to the box….

Stralman is an offensive minded Dman with reasonable size, but he is far from tough. He does have a good shot from the point. He also is a career -40 (on two bad teams, admittedly). He still would an upgrade over Woywitka. The issue is that he made close to $2M last year, and the Rangers are not willing to give him probably even half of that. He also might have some options in Sweden. I would reserve my judgement about Deveaux until he plays a couple of games. Even though he looked good last night, he is likely to sit in favor of #16. Unless WW’s groin requires more maintenance. He looked like he was trying to stretch a few times during the intermission by the end of 3rd.
