Tonight’s contest marks the Rangers’ first trip to Winnipeg since they faced the former Winnipeg Jets franchise on Nov. 17, 1995 (3-6). New York’s last win in Winnipeg was a 5-4 victory on Nov. 21, 1992. Forward Phil Bourque tallied a game-high, two goals, and John Vanbiesbrouck made 21 saves in the win.

The Rangers’ seven-game road trip to begin the 2011-12 regular season is the longest to open a season in franchise history. The previous team record was five games away from Madison Square Garden to begin the season, in 1952-53 and 1953-54. The Blueshirts will open their home schedule on Oct. 27 vs. Toronto, their latest home opener since they opened the 1948-49 season on Oct. 27, 1948 (excluding the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season).

New York began their current four-game Western Canada road trip by defeating Vancouver (4-0) and Calgary (3-2, OT), marking the first time the team has won in those two cities in the same season since 1986-87.

The Rangers completed their first of 14 back-to-back sets this season with a 2-1 shootout loss against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 8 at Ericsson Globe Arena. New York has posted a record of 0-0-1 (0-0-0 at home, 0-0-1 on the road) in the first game of the set, and are 0-0-1 (0-0-0 at home, 0-0-1 on the road) in the second game. Since 2009-10, New York is 21-8-3 in the back-end of back-to-back sets, including a 9-3-1 mark at MSG and 12-5-2 on the road over the span. The Rangers’ next back-to-back set is Nov. 5-6 vs. Montreal and Winnipeg, both games to be played at Madison Square Garden.

Henrik Lundqvist made his 32nd consecutive regular season start on Saturday at Edmonton, dating back to Feb. 11, 2011 at Atlanta. He has posted a record of 17-12-3 with a 2.22 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and five shutouts over the span. Including playoffs, Lundqvist has started each of the Rangers last 37 games.

Defenseman Dan Girardi enters tonight’s contest leading the NHL in average ice time, logging 28:39 per contest. He has logged 30:00+ of ice time twice this season, including a season-high 31:25 of ice time on Oct. 8 against Anaheim in Stockholm, Sweden.

Brad Richards has registered a point in five of six games as a Ranger to lead the team with four assists and five points on the season. His five-game scoring streak to begin the season was the longest by a new Ranger since Marian Gaborik tied the franchise record set by Dave Creighton in 1955-56 by registering a point in eight consecutive games to begin the 2009-10 season. Richards also tallied his 500th career NHL assist on Thursday at Calgary.

Ryan Callahan notched the Rangers’ first goal of the season at 15:22 of the first period on Oct. 7 against the Kings, while making his debut as the team’s captain. He also established a Rangers record for most shots in a season opener with a career-high 11 shots on goal. Callahan’s 11 shots were the most by an NHL player in a season-opening game since Pavel Bure on Oct. 3, 1997 vs. Anaheim (11 shots). The last Ranger to register at least 11 shots in a game was Brendan Shanahan on Apr. 4, 2008 vs. the Islanders (12 shots).

The Rangers had three players make their Rangers debut in the team’s season opener on Oct. 7 against the Kings – Tim Erixon (NHL debut), Brad Richards (one assist) and Mike Rupp. In addition, defenseman Jeff Woywitka made his Rangers debut on Oct. 15 at Long Island, while defenseman Brendan Bell made his Blueshirts debut on Saturday at Edmonton.

-The Rangers have posted a record of 283-272-93 all-time in the month of October, including a 176-117-48 mark at home and a 107-155-45 record on the road. New York (2-2-2) is scheduled to play 10 games during the season’s opening month in 2011-12, with three games being contested at MSG and seven scheduled on the road.
-Legendary Rangers’ defenseman Brian Leetch holds the franchise record for most points in the month of October, having registered 43 goals and 130 assists for 173 career points in the season’s opening month.
-The Blueshirts’ all-time leader for most career wins in the month of October is Mike Richter, who registered 40 career wins during the season’s opening month. Henrik Lundqvist has recorded 35 career wins during the month of October.
-New York has posted two, seven-game winning streaks in the month of October, winning seven consecutive games during the season’s opening month in 2009-10 (Oct. 3 vs. Ottawa to Oct. 17 at Toronto) and 1988-89 (Oct. 16 vs. Vancouver to Oct. 30 vs. Pittsburgh).

About Author

  1. fire torts. hire new coach who likes Avery. play Avery as a LW on all the lines, and everything will great. simple right.

  2. How about this rumour. The rangers play 60 minutes of quality hockey and kick the snot out of the thrashingjets.

  3. Kinda unrelated but Happy Birthday to my son, who is 4 today….a mini bonehead lol ive started him early….his first game was Cally’s 4 goal game lol id say hes sort of a good, luck charm

  4. billybleedsblue on

    Happy Birthday Mini-Vibz :D

Vibz, with charm like that, get that boy season tickets!

  5. What rumours? Only 1 I heard was the Rangers might be interested in Gilbert Brule and to that I say WTF?

  6. Is Eklund’s random rumour generator working again?

I hear the Habs are interested in dealing Blowmez….

Although its not unusual to see a few moves following a deal like the Florida/Vancouver trade.

  7. On improving the team…………………….

One way would be to fire Sather hire Avery as GM, and then sit back and watch the fun. The team may not become more improved on the ice, but by gar, I’ll bet they’d be the best dressed.

  8. Doodie Machetto on

John M, what’s your source for those rumors? They seem pretty baseless and unlikely to me.

  9. Doodie – you don’t need sources for Rumors. You can just make them up. For example:

I heard that Sean Avery was being recalled and Christensen was traded to the Canucks for Dale Weise.

  10. I just want to point out that Rangers PR used “Oh Captain, My Captain” again in the game notes.

  11. Carp,

Always liked Corey Potter – saw him play a couple of games in Hartford. Never got a fair shake with the Rangers.

Christensen is taking up space. Got to go!

Not saying that it has cost the Rangers any games, but the REFS have been horrible so far. Too many soft calls. Touching the hands with your stick = interference. Breathing on the goalie = interference. Can’t take all contact out of the game!!

  12. Christensen is scoring a goal tonight (not during the shootout) _see above comment by me_. @Mark that prediction!@

  13. Vibz,
Happy B.Day to your little one, to you and, of course to Mrs. Vibz! (hope, she don’t mind early addiction, lol?). Nothing creates a father/son bond, like that. (I have two fanatic and fantastic big boys, my best job ever. So will be yours).

  14. I saw the NYR promotion for tonight’s game that read “who will score first” and my first thought was: Nobody……

  15. Thanks 4ever and Carp….lol @ 26th…..4ever, ur 100% correct wit the no other bond like it …i had tears in my eyes watchin him scream “yea baby, glove save and a beauty” and of course “go-o-oal” ….thanks again!

  16. Good morning all! Happy birthday to the baby Vibz….(Carp, LMAO at 26th)

Hope I can stay awake tonight for game….

NBC promo’d Stamkos as the new face of the NHL? …WTB? Has anyone told Crosby this?

  17. Doodie – that pretty cool, I never noticed the ‘Copy video URL at current time’ feature on YouTube thx

  18. Things could be worse:
The Rangers have 1 goal in 31:44 of 5 v 4 power play time
    Montreal has 0 goals in 49:45 of 5 v 4 time plus they’ve given up a shortie.

  19. bob The Builder (Not the Bob You are thinking of) on

A loss here would instill some panic (not amongst us, of course..we are always in panic mode with regarding to this team), and possibly force an earlier dismantle…get those draft picks and get ’em in bunches!!

    Bob (B.O.B.)

  20. And Jacques Martin will be available to replace Torts very soon. Unless, of course, he is hired by Columbus first.

  21. So….isn’t it great that the Rangers didn’t make a move for Doughty, who was recently placed on IR?

  22. This team gave us plenty of trouble last year, to us they should be considered the Threts

    ATL (6) – NYR (4)
    NYR (3) – ATL (2) SO
    NYR (2) – ATL (3)
    ATL (3) – NYR (0)

  23. billybleedsblue on

That line generator is brilliant!!! :D :D :D

Broadway Roe, at some point, you’d think the Rangers’ PR would have the sense to stop likening Callahan to President Lincoln “Oh Captain, my Captain…” It just seems a little inappropriate to me. *shrugs*

  24. 4generations 4 cups on

We need a pronounced win. Guys like Fedotenko need to score and guys named Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov need to show up to the game, hit the net, and score. Its enough of this crap of ‘they’re still growing.’ Anisimov has only so much time left to prove that he can play on a top line in the NHL without being a Zherdev that can put up some flare every now and then and score the occasional highlight reel goal. This Russian inconsistency sucks. Anisimov, put up or shut up. Dubinsky needs to prove that he’s just as good as Mike Richards is, because I think he is, but he simply cannot stay on his skates

  25. Trade Artie for Mr Bean

It’s just 6 games and maybe the generous MSG stats are yet to come into play but Cally’s hits are down by 33% so far.
That’s a small sample of games, but if anything I’d think they’d be skewed the other way with him trying to set an example in his first games as Captain.

3.73 – hits per game last year
    2.5 – this year

Over 60 games, like he played last year that would be 150 hits vs 224

  26. dde – my theory on the hits being down is that he _is_ trying to lead by example – he is just more concerned about taking horrible offensive zone penalties. That theory has cut down on his forechecking. (this is my hopeful explanation)

  27. Doodie Machetto on

dde, some of that is definitely caused by how much time they have been shorthanded. Seems like a lot so far this season.

  28. Wouldn’t surprise me if it was solely the MSG recording bias, dde. The Rangers’ hit numbers have been 30% to 70% higher at home than on the road over recent years.

  29. He’s actually played about a minute more TOI per game v last year, pretty much added to his SH time. His ES & PP time are virtually the same. The penalties have certainly hurt the ability to get any flow going. Regardless of what the numbers say, sometimes it’s just the eyeball test that tells the story. It also helps when everyone on the line is working and in sync.

    Wow, that much LW

  30. Good afternoon boneheads. Things will get better. then they will get worse we all know the drill. We get a win against Winnipeg and it really wasn’t all that bad of a start considering the horrific road trip to start the season.

However, we lose to Winnipeg it may be time to self medicate.

Offensively skilled Players Need Not Apply

  31. NYDNRangers Wolski in. Christensen out

Waseka informs me that Christensen will be Prucha’d. There goes my *bold* prediction that Christensen nets a goal tonight. Guess I will have to predict Wolski scores while playing on the 1st line.

  32. Hey, Mouth! Long time…..
It’s never a bad time to self medicate. If you’re a Rangers fan, that is…How’re things?

  33. @ilb2001 Everything is great after a tough summer, I have missed the bantering between boneheads and gonna post more. You’re right about the self medicating, I usually do it via Fun Size Snicker bars this time of year.

  34. morning ILB and all!!

looks like whackamole—> has lots of info today, but woywitka—> is pretty quiet!

    happy 26th to little vibz…vibin’?

  35. Mister Delaware on

Your boy Delaware is going to fix the Rangers lines …

    Demoted: Newbury
    Euthanized: Christensen

Might not be optimal talent utilization with Fedo getting first line minutes to start the game but it would be really nice to see some definition of the 3rd (quick, potentially potent) and 4th (bangers) lines. Right now they’re just a haphazard mess of a few skaters and a few grinders that generates little on the ice, more glaring when the 2nd line is either gassed from the PK or just playing crappy.

  36. Wicky, do you think the reason why Woywitka is so quiet is because they are stopping the players from tweeting? I read something about that and I was just wondering what everyone thought about it. Carp, do you know if there are any social media rules for the team?

  37. Jlone2Bubblehead (Namaste Henrik Lundqvist) on

Staal being hurt makes me sad.
But, we have this guy named Dan Girardi thats playing number one minutes. Have you heard, he was undrafted?
I find it hard to remember a game where i didn’t hear that. I think thats the follow up sentence to the Crosby update….

  38. Gotta watch out for Alex Burmistrov tonight…kid is on fire…

Only 20 years old….5 points in his last 4 games…

  39. Judging by the comment threads during the games 99% of them are “hang yourself” games. Even the ones we win.

  40. -the beat to 50 cent’s ‘in da club’ plays as wolski skates out tonight “you can find me in the tub. Ruba dub dub gonna put in some time so we have a first line!”

New York Rangers Pregame: Wojtek Wolski and Jeff Woywitka In, Bell and Christensen Out

  42. That’s right @CCCP@ !!! That’s basically how it works when you have a borderline mediocre team.

  43. CCCP,
I am a little disappointed that you are on the fire Torts bandwagon because of Avery. I always felt you were better than that.

  44. roe
it could be but i think it is probably more self imposed by the players than team!

    bull dog
cccp is a fine human being and i don’t think it is just avery!!

  45. u guys are hilarious!! i come home from work after a lousy day and u guys crack me up.
oh, manny, about your prediction of christesen tonight. even though hes not playing, he still has about the same chance to score. woofer woywitsky, ruff and booberry is one hell of a trio isnt it though.

  46. “great strategy for tonight’s game. Take two AHL’ers out and put two borderline AHL’ers in! Instant upgrade!”

CC, what else is there to do? You say you’re not a Torts hater, but that post says differently, unless you’re being sarcastic. All we have are AHL’ers to fill spots. Only person that can do anything aboot that is Slats, by making some trades.

  47. Though, CC is probably one of the only Torts hating/Avery lovers on this blog. Unless we have a few closet dwellers here.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Carp was a closeted Avery lover/Torts hater. That would be the best!

  48. bull dog line

i am definitely not on the “fire Torts” bandwagon…yet. way too early for that…

but at this point, i am a little annoyed with Torts… sending this many team messages this early in
the season does not reflect good on Torts… new season with same old problems. we have seen it all before, all that is left is for Torts to tell Brooksie to go f@&% himself and season is complete!

  49. i am kinda nervous about biron starting tonight but hank hasnt been good at all against this team since the 07 playoffs. and generally plays worse against crappy teams than good ones. have to beat these guys though, get back home over .500(buttman standards), and get on a roll winning some home games. and happy b day to your boy vibz. hope hes good luck again tonight

  50. did someone say fire torts??

yes, tonight’s “AHL shakeup” should really make a difference.

I predict Wolski will be sitting for extended periods tonight while Totalretard grimaces alot.

  51. I think Torts is a good coach, but he like most of his players has not had a good start. keeping Christensen on the team, regardless of Avery, is a mistake. Stepan to left wing is a mistake. the game against Edmonton was one of the poorer coached games I have seen. I think once they get healthy, and home, things will be better. but Torts sure has not helped the start of the team.

  52. who said i hate Torts? I do not…

There are plenty of Torts/hating Avery/loving posters on here! But i am not one of them.

Youth movement is great but where is that promised uptempo aggressive offense that Torts is so famous for? “TREE” seasons and these guys still have no clue what to do with he puck int he offensive zone lol

  53. Don’t worry about Biron! There is nothing we can do. Be more concerned about the teams lack of defense and offense.

    Don’t Fire Torts!

  54. here is the stat of the day….
right now the red wings have more fighting majors at this point in the season than the…wait for it…wait for it…fishies! VPG letting everyone in fishie nation down (all 16 people)

  55. cccp
I believe safe is death was the mantra and we are still waiting for that!!

wouldn’t safe is death be rolling your 2/3rds 4th line a decent amount of minutes to save some of your better players from getting worn out later in the season?

  56. After months of traveling all over the world, I’ll settle for what we’ve been watching.

It’s not like we’re the Blue Jackets. Or even the Nucks and Bruins for that matter.

It’s so early in the season to complain aboot these things.

  57. After that pathetic display in Zug, I have no confidence in Biron. He looked like an amateur…terrible…hope he proves me wrong…

  58. NYR_FAN

its too early to complain! ;)

in fact, from now on we should all be positive no matter what! If they lose today, its gonna be an AWESOME loss! I can feel it already… great season awaits us!

  59. exactly cccp. when we are fighting for 8th place again, we’ll all say, “if we only beat the edmonton oilers that night”. the oiler will probaly be in last place again getting ready to draft yakupov. gotta win against the easier teams. no excuse early or not.

  60. exactly grabby and cccp. You don’t win the cup in the first part of the season, but you can lose it!!!

gotta get points to put in the bank!!

  61. Is it bad that I read the Burmistrov comment earlier and thought, ‘hmm, when did he get traded to winnipeg? wait, oh yeah…..’

  62. uh oh, its war!! positive pollies vs the negative nancies!!! wheres all the satisfied sallys to bring peace and wisdom to us all???

  63. Right – Positive Pollies! Come out of the wordwork. This Pessimistic Patricia and Negative Nancy and Sad Samantha stuff has got to go. Let’s make this season one to remember

  64. Grabby, not necessarily! I’m complaining aboot Dublowsky, and doubting Callaman, and so on. I’m still negative!

I’m bust with the new Batman game. I’m waiting for Gamefly to get back to me. I “complained” to them again today.

  65. play me in 12!!!!! somebodyplease!! i hat playing strager. sometimesthey quit on me during the game.

  66. hate playingstrangers. i also dont have a headset, sux we cant trashtalk yet athough me n my bud whos in ny were playing dead island online and i heard his n my voice coming out of the ps3 itself. it was pretty creepy

  67. wicky, doing the major bag man before he goes off to work :)

bull dog, ha! I was being amused at your “pro” Avery comments……

  68. anybody like the show walking dead on amc??? awesom show. love zombies. theygot dreamcatcher on now. some prety good horror flickson tommoro. cujo, halloween, but the they sip halloween 2 and go to halloween 3 which sucked. wtf is up with that? am i monologuing again?

  69. >>>jimbo
    fire mickey!!!

Hahahaha!!! Well, yes, she deserves to be disciplined for her egregious treatment of the both of us, Wickster! And for an absentee suitor, too!! What a disgrace! ;-D

  70. >>>Steve Mason is in net for the Jets, apparently.

Too bad it’s not his uncle, Perry – he’s dead!

  71. walking dead is great orrzy, but the original romero zombie trilogy was better. night, dawn and day of the dead are both scary, creepy and funny too! after those 3, his zombie flicks got pretty bad, with his newest one “survival of the dead” being totally goofy. i watched all 3 of theoriginal romero movies religiously as a kid. they still scare me for somereason

  72. i know they get cheesy as u get older but i still love em for some reason. just the scene where rhodes is yelling at dr frankenstein in day of the dead was just hilarious. the zombies were much cooler and scary looking and also funny like “bub” the smart zombie that salutes rhodes and steele. thats when savini and nicotero dd the special fx for romeros flicks. better than cgi. although i think the running “infected” zombies are cool too.

anyway,. orr, are u ever gonna play me in nhl 12?? cccp??? anyone?

  73. This is gonna get confusing if we’re gonna refer to these Jets as the Thrashers and the Coyotes as the old Jets. Why can’t it just be like a Browns situation, but the Jets being dormant for 15 years?

  74. – SNY

According to the Globe and Mail every coach that has come into Winnipeg so far this season has expressed excitement over the Jets being back.

When asked what he thought about hockey returning to Winnipeg, Tortorella said:

“Nope. I have no comment,” the coach said briskly. “I’m just worried about our team.”

  75. cjp- i love day of the dead the best personally. its the funniest one ive ever seen. and i saw on the bonus features they said rhodes was puking because of the stench and he was so pissed he added the “choke on em” just because he was so sick and pissed off about it. it was almost scarface with the profanity and thats one reason it wasnt well recieved. but yea, enough jibberish, its go time!!! win one for us you puss brain bags of bleep!!!!!

  76. wow yea didnt even realize cjp- youre not new here man lol. u should know the language gotta be toned down. i slip up once in a while, but damn u went gonzo bro

  77. ilb, I answered!!!!

Grabby, as soon as I typed that I knew I hartelled up….Miss you!

Miss you all! Especially since I’m gonna miss tonight’s fun….It’s Go Time soon, and Go to bed soon time for me….byfuglien….!

  78. fran

    with Avery as GM
    the team would be well-dressed
    and tan.
and he could call himself up from the Whale

    other than that….

  79. Mama

    “hartnelled up”

    what the byfuglien?!?!?

when did we change the meaning of hartnell
    or am i just confused?

He took that shot in the bad leg boys. Lets hope Captain Callahan is okay..
