ROAD WARRIORS
The Rangers’ seven-game road trip to begin the 2011-12 regular season is the longest to open a season in franchise history. The previous team record is five games away from Madison Square Garden to begin the season, in 1952-53 and 1953-54. The Blueshirts will open their home schedule on Oct. 27 vs. Toronto, their latest home opener since they opened the 1948-49 season on Oct. 27, 1948 (excluding the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season).
BACK-TO-BACKS
The Rangers completed their first of 14 back-to-back sets this season with a 2-1 shootout loss against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 8 at Ericsson Globe Arena. New York has posted a record of 0-0-1 (0-0-0 at home, 0-0-1 on the road) in the first game of the set, and are 0-0-1 (0-0-0 at home, 0-0-1 on the road) in the second game. Since 2009-10, New York is 21-8-3 in the back-end of back-to-back sets, including a 9-3-1 mark at MSG and 12-5-2 on the road over the span. The Rangers’ next back-to-back set is Nov. 5-6 vs. Montreal and Winnipeg, both games to be played at Madison Square Garden.
PUT ME IN, COACH
Henrik Lundqvist turned aside all 40 shots faced in a 4-0 shutout on Tuesday at Vancouver, while making his 30th consecutive regular season start dating back to Feb. 11, 2011 at Atlanta. He has posted a record of 16-11-3 with a 2.22 goals against average, a .925 save percentage and five shutouts over the span. Including playoffs, Lundqvist has started each of the Rangers last 35 games.
WORKHORSE
Defenseman Dan Girardi enters tonight’s contest leading the NHL in average ice time, logging 29:21 per contest. He has logged 30:00+ of ice time in two of the Rangers’ four games this season, including a season-high 31:25 of ice time on Oct. 8 against Anaheim in Stockholm, Sweden.
A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION
Brad Richards has registered a point in each of his first four games as a Ranger to begin the season, and currently leads the team in scoring with four points. He enters tonight’s contest with a four-game scoring streak, tallying one goal and three assists over the span. In addition, Richards has also won 28 of 44 faceoff attempts to rank fourth in the NHL with a 63.6% faceoff winning percentage.
O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!
Ryan Callahan notched the Rangers’ first goal of the season at 15:22 of the first period on Oct. 7 against the Kings, while making his debut as the team’s captain. He also led all skaters with a career-high, 11 shots and led all team forwards with 20:30 of ice time. Callahan’s 11 shots established a Rangers record for most shots in a season opener, and were the most by an NHL player in a season-opening game since Pavel Bure on Oct. 3, 1997 vs. Anaheim (11 shots). The last Ranger to register at least 11 shots in a game was Brendan Shanahan on Apr. 4, 2008 vs. the Islanders (12 shots).
NEW FACES
The Rangers had three players make their Rangers debut in the team’s season opener on Oct. 7 against the Kings – Tim Erixon (NHL debut), Brad Richards (one assist) and Mike Rupp. In addition, defenseman Jeff Woywitka made his Rangers debut on Saturday at Long Island.
MILESTONE GAME
Forwards Brandon Prust and Mike Rupp both reached NHL milestones on Saturday at Long Island. Prust skated in his 200th career NHL game, while Rupp made his 500th career NHL appearance. Prust has registered 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) and 461 penalty minutes with the Rangers, Calgary Flames and Phoenix Coyotes. The five-year NHL veteran has tallied 15% of his career points while shorthanded (five goals, two assists). Rupp has recorded 89 points (49 goals, 40 assists) and 661 penalty minutes in nine seasons with the Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins.

New York (1-1-2) is scheduled to play 10 games during the season’s opening month in 2011-12, with three games being contested at MSG and seven scheduled on the road.

Good morning, boneheads!
Mornin’ captain Ilb, Carp, et all. I might actually be able to catch some of the game later, how exciting!
LETS GO RANGERS!!! Heave ho two in a row!
??????? ??????? ????! And fellow Boneheads!
Well that didn’t work. It was supposed to be “Good morning Captain” in Russian. Well I tried.
“Nobody likes to sit and watch, but as a team we’re taking way too many penalties that we’re trying to cut back on, and my penalty was stupid, so I paid the price for it.”
“I was told why I was sitting but I didn’t need to be. I know it was a stupid penalty.”
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/rangers/prust_pays_stiff_price_for_penalty_fIkP7mQIL2ZGbfYoPTBTOK
More vindication for the heroic decision taken by the greatest coach in sports history!
Morning boneheads!
Is it just me or are the Rangers using “OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN” in everything to reference Callahan? In the game notes again today? LOL
LW, wait, is that quote from Chromartie about the Jets and Rex Ryan? Wait, what? lol? Is this thing on?
“Oh captain…” Nothing like extended metaphor early in the mornin’...
Good Morning all.
I watched the game last night and while the defense has holes, they are fairly quick to recover. They seem to bend farther than in recent years. +1
Vezina nominee performance! +2
Who is this guy wearing #19 and why is he teasing us with this rediculous display of skill. Kinda makes the other lines look bad (Bush League?). +1
really miss Staal. -3
Glimmers of hope and flashes of brilliance. Unfortunately, Penalties are keeping the team from reaching its stride. you can see them start to move their feet, start to build up steam… then the canadia-bias whistle-monster rears its ugly one sided face. and yes most of those penalties could have easily been non calls as well. I wonder what the team would look like if they just decided to dress 4 fewer players. Esentially that is what they are trying to compete with. -1
Wow, those were some goal scorers goals. Well placed, good movement and on target with something behind it. +1
Loved McMadman with and without the puck. +1
A slow start does not condemn them to fighting for the 8th spot. Half the fun for me is watching the team grow together and becoming something better. Clagary beware, THE New York Rangers are in town and have something to prove.
Thanks for the article LW. I honestly don’t understand why people are freaking out over someone being benched one period. This team obviously has a problem taking penalties, justified or not. It is very common for coaches to sit a player for taking a stupid penalty. Now I don’t love Torts, but I think he’s a decent coach. Let him do what he has to do.
Good morning all! Is everyone behaving themselves?? I really hope I can stay awake for the game tonight, but I have my doubts. Sigh…off to work…later all! LGR!
Have a great day Blogmama, I’m off too. LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!
Are you starting it again, Felicity? :-)
LW – you should post that picture of the translation again. It was that good.
Also – the benching of Prust probably sent a message to the entire team. (I am helping start it again)
I hope the game doesn’t go to a shootout because the Flames have that great shoutout performer – Olli Jokinen. :)
Let’s Go Rangers!
I know CCCharlie. The minute I saw his name that horrifying skills competition came to mind and I remember a lot of stomping on my hat, blacking out and breaking things. ANGER

Does anybody agree that the news on Staal will not be good?
Just think about how deep our Defense will be when STauwl and SauerPauer come back. I salivate at the possibilities.
staal and sauer coming back would be a welcome site. i for one dont think staal will be back for a long time. im waiting for the bad news any moment now.
key to tonight PP GOALS. only team in the league now that winnipeg scored last night without a pp goal. its time and stay out of the freaking box wiht dumb offensive zone penalties.
I’ve only seen 4 periods of the season so far because of work. But, after being hard on him last year, I’ve been impressed with Girardi’s work on D.
Felicity, the newspaper version of that story had a headline that started “Prost pays …” Nice.
Good morning, Sally!
Morning ILB and all!!!
LW
was that the article on whackamole—->??
manny
let me try and help you…so if torts is such a good and fair coach and he isn’t biased and he is the greatest possible coach, how does huginsky get a free pass while prust gets benched!! Totally bush league coaching, bylsma would do a far better job than torts with this team.
I hope that was a good assist manny!!
Was there staal news??
LGR!!
eric, this old man agrees with you…waiting any minute for Stall to be shut down for whole year some time soon this would be commensurate with other players having PCS pr PPCS not to be confused with PPT (plunge protection team) or even DDT for the 60s. This would coincide nicely with my theory that a top 5 pick should come the way of the young, able but undermanned Rangers team.
As always your humble builder,
Bob
Why the heck Erik “Claude Rains” Christensen even on this roster? What a waste. I’d take Avery over this chump any day.
Thanks, Wicky! Drive that traffic up!
Look, I am a huge MZA fan. He became one of my favorite Rangers last year. I love the kid’s heart, skill, and work ethic. I am disappointed that he isn’t in the lineup. It’s ironic that the Rangers don’t need a highly skilled RW right wing right now….
Does that mean I want the coach fired? No.
Does that mean Torts has a bias against Zucc? Nope.
Does that mean Kris Newbury is a better hockey player? No.
thanks, wick and manny for helping drive the traffic. a little slow this morning. wait, I have an idea:
SEAN AVERY
that should fix it.
LOL!
HERE WE GO! I’ll follow: Matty, to do what exactly? Play 6 min per game on the fourth line? The difference between their contracts is about $1M. That, by the trading deadline, should amount to around $3M contract they can sign if need to.

in other news: Gaddafi is dead.
ilb, I agree with you. I just miss the entertainment value Avery brought to the rivalry games. If the coach didn’t say Avery and Rains were competing for the same spot, I don’t think there would be as much to talk about. That is what forces all the comparisons.

So you are an Avery fan CT. I read Binary.
bob
maybe you should ask David Dubinsky or his brother Brendon Dubinsky to translate it for you ;)
P.S. I am not on the “Fire Torts” wagon…yet. Way too early for that. And if we keep stealing games like we did in Vancouver, Torts might just get himself a Jack Adams award :)
CT is that the code for the color

that last post by wicky @ 11:24 am might have been the most coherent post he’s ever made.
Eddie must have smoked himself into a coma. Poor guy!
If the Rangers can’t win tonight’s game for themselves, then do it for Candice Swanepoel! It’s her birthday!
Any word on who’s in net tonight?
Happy 26th, Candice.

thanks

“might” have been, cmon credit where credit is due…it was!
carp
agree 100%, happy 26th candice
Now that Wolski is clearly this year’s Avery, I hope the Rangers don’t wait so long to get him off the roster and fill his space with anyone Torts doesn’t hate.
It’s not “clear” that he is the new Avery. The guy’s injured, for Petr Prucha’s sake.
I mean, he can be pretty useless when healthy, now, imagine him with a groin injury. Non existent. In fact, maybe he has been in the lineup, but we just didn’t know because he’s been such a ghost! Never know!
I think I’m gonna paint my face for tonights game. Gotta support the team babe.
Woski = Avery?
I don’t really get the comparison. Are you referring to Wolski’s injury? I don’t see Wolski being the agitator type or really getting into fights or provoking the other team. Also, he has a really good shot and usually doesn’t miss the net wide right 90% of the time. Also, he doesn’t play behind the net 90% of the time he is on the ice.
Sincerely,
Manny, A Mystique, An Enigma and/or a Potentially Potent Philanthropist
Oh man! I hope that’s not it, Orr!
Happy Happy, Candice….

I would guess Hank gets the start….How can you not go with him after the last game?
Btw, the Torts quotes on Woof Wolski from the Post are funny as hell:
“We can’t get him out of the tub,” the coach said, despite the fact Wolski practiced yesterday after taking part in the morning skate on Tuesday.
Asked whether that meant Wolski was getting hot-tub treatment for the groin, Tortorella said: “I guess.”
Does this make Wolski’s new nick name rub a dub dub?
Interestingly, Hank had 11 SO last year and was only 3-7-1 in his next start (all were the next game played after his SO).
It’s going to be ugly but here goes:

So Wolski is in the dog house. For what? Having a weak pre season? 4 games into the season and hes been hurt the whole time but youve decided. Its been decided. Uht! That’s it! No chance he can do anything productive ever again. On to the next massive problem that needs to be examined and solved here on RR I mean we are running out of time to fix all the issues w this team. They’ve played 4 games already!!!! ;)
Wolski can’t get out of a tuba?
Last try, then I’ll leave the experimenting to Torts

Does anybody have an idea when the rangers will finally get a power play goal? I’m just wondering since the rangers are the only team in the league without one.
tomg
when Torts gets fired.
:)
tomg, as soon as everybody up front stops standing around. I thought they had one good PP in each of the last two games.

CCCPremember when you said I was going down? Well it’s still early but I believe I have a slight point advantage on you. Bwahahahahha (evil laugh)I sent the trade, Wick. I think you have between 2-6 days to think it over.
Urgh, wicky with the shot block
I think I said that, Manny :P
I had a bad night the other night. But, everyone was scoring for you! Pitkanen really killed me. He had a goal and two assists.
And Halak, as always, played like garbage. Talk aboot overrated, he’s arguably the most overrated goalie in the NHL.
Carp- I think today taught you a great lesson.
If you want to promote your blog, you should have a headline that says “Rangers Report—Where You Can Write in Red in the Comment Section.”
Hits galore!
thenyrangers Torts on Tim Erixon, ex-Flame pick, playing in Calgary 2nite: “I am not into politics, I just coach the kid…he’s coming along just fine”
LOL! Torts will never change! I love it!
We should have tan night at the Garden. Use some bronzer!
Carey Price is singlehandedly destroying my season in my Yahoo! league (which I how i must refer to it because my team name would get me banned from this site).
Prust has a goal and an assist in his last two games. I think he should play on the top line!!

Oh, right, two assists! Even better! Hot streak.
We need Prust and Erixon to bury these dorks! We need Pigman to be destroyed by someone!
I know Dreary isn’t on the team anymore, but I’d still like someone to kick the carcillo out of Glencross.
Roe and dde, LOL. Write in red crayon, only on Rangers Report.
Very immature group today. I couldn’t be more proud. Lots of gibberish (jibberish).
Joke, that’s why you don’t declare the hat trick until the fourth comment. Hahaha.
@MARK MY WORDS!!!!!!!!!!
Dang it, forgot the second @.
your words have been marked€-pansy!whooo!
not referring to anyone on here at the moment lol…just a question…
why are some people so dumb?? can anyone answer that for me, please? Thanks.
I am dumb for a number of reasons. I blame:
A. My Parents;
2. My Schooling; and
D. The Government.
Addendum: I was also knocked in the head twice – both times resulted in concussions. That didn’t help.
Dumbness is a side effect of concussions! Take Tylenol!
Tylenol doesn’t cure concussions. If it did then Cindy Crosby would be back on the ice against Mark Sttawhl
If you’re talking aboot me, I was hit in the head with a puck in a High School pre-game warm-up.
And Eric Lindros wouldn’t have brain oozing out of his nostrils and ears.
See – it all results from head injuries.
Sgt. O’Rourke: “I don’t know why everybody says you’re so dumb.”
Corporal Agarn: “Who says I’m dumb?”
Did youse see where Lindros is thinking the Legion of Doom line might get together for the Winter Classic alumni game?
Wonder if Beuk will play.
chapeau.
Yes, saw that, Carp. I’m crossing my fingers that Leetch, Gretz, Mess, and Gravey play….
Declaring the hat trick too early has me
redfaced. Lesson learned and carp didn’t even have to bench me!!Why are people so dumb?

Whoops
RussianI have a good feeling about tonight’s game. I Calgary is a decent team, but for sure, not one that I am scared to play. When we have a full healthy roster, I am not scared to play any team in the league, but when we have a depleted defense, teams that can skate are going to give us problems. Calgary has some talented players on their squad, but they are really a one line team. Iginla has always played well against us, but if we can contain that line, I like our chances. I think the pack line will have a big game tonight.
Caterpillar

Terex
graciously ever, the builder, bob
Hattrickand EN That”s how you do it, Joke :-)we might have to check with the official scorers (the one who took away Stepan’s assist Saturday) on whether “whoops” counts as an empty-netter, ilb.
Ilb,
you are Richards to my Stepan. I must watch, learn and grow to reach my top line potential.
B. Rich on Tortorella, courtesy of Blueshirts United:
“When you leave and don’t have that structure and don’t have that coach that cares and does everything he can to have the team prepared you miss it,” explained Richards, who began his career in Tampa Bay playing for Tortorella. “That was one of the biggest reasons in my decision. You know that every day he’s going to put every ounce of his life into trying to get us to win and trying to get us better.”
I smell conspiracy, Carp…I think Richards hates Tortorella and is trying to set him up for failure so he can be fired. Anyone with me?
This place is really picking up….
B. Richards (and his sister) love Tortsy
I also think Tortorella hates Richards. But then he hates everybody.
I saw somewhere that the Rangers used their extended road trip to bond as a team. Anybody know what that entailed? Did they all go tanning with Torts? Did they get weird facial hair?
The team full of players who mutually hate each other…That explains their PP.
I said that over the summer that Torts hated his knee and thus he had it replaced.
Haha, good one, CT
kind of tired of hearing how great Torts was in Tampa 8 years ago. So far in NY, he barely achieved anything…no wait, he did not achieve anything in NY…yet. Four years and counting :)
P.S. I don’t hate Torts.
My iPhone
hatesme at the moment. Running very slow.201 and counting…
Which generation do you have?
No, really. Anybody know what this team bonding was all about?
apparently, Richards took some of his $600 billion and bought a $10 fedora to bond the team.
I think it’s 3rd…one before face time was an option.
It will let me load one website at a time then refuses to open anymore pages until I power down. I power it back up and I get one page before freeze. Might be better now after four power downs. Seems to be a little smoother.
He’s a charitable guy that Richard$$$
They have to herd together in this Tortorellarian enviroment.
Tortoretarian it sould be…
Ah, yeah the 3G and 3GS phones really began to slow down after a new operating system update came out last year. You should be upgrade eligible by now for a newer model though. I got the 4 last year, then tricked my wife into letting me use her upgrade for the 4S last week, they’re both substantially faster than the 3G or 3GS.
the team was “extremely well” prepared for the game in Vancouver! it showed all through out first 40 minutes ;)
Yeah, pretty sure I have 3gs and it’s usually fine. Every once in awhile it slows down on me. I should look into upgrade eligibility.
Since the new one has voice command you can ask it when the Rangers will score a power play goal.
How’s Siri, CTB?
iPhone replies: “Outlook not so good”
It’s unfair to say he hasn’t done anything here, and bring up his days in Tampa. Two different teams.
I think it’s pretty nifty, but it comes with a few caveats.
– You have to be connected to the network for it to work. And speaking of which I think the network was overloaded this past weekend. So I got a lot of feedback telling me that it was having trouble connecting to the network.
– A lot of things you say to it have to be more about finding out directions, list of restaurants/shops, weather etc. Anything that seems to be out of its direct knowledge base though gets directed to a google search.
– If you have multiple numbers or emails for one contact you’ll still have to manually select which one you want to use to address your message to, although once you do select it you can dictate the message directly and it will type it out for you.
I had some fun questions to ask it. Like “I want to drink so mucn until I vomit” and it pulled up a list of bars. If you tell it “I’m drunk” it will pull up a list of taxi services. It’s still a work in progress so I’m sure it will get better as more people provide feeback.
LOL…mine does have limited voice command. I can ask it to call someone off contact list for example.
We have a storm moving in here, I think it’s messing with my connection.
And before I leave for the day, let me end by saying….
PaigeRichardsI want to try and join you guys on line for tonights game. Hope to see you all then.
Thanks, CTB….
ORR
then people should stop measuring Torts success by what he did in Tampa.
where’s this storm, Joke?
Is the team dramatically better under Tortorella than under Renney?
Dramatically different, I’d say. I don’t know about dramatically better.
At least Torts pronounces “about” and “against” the right way :P
Did Carp say SEAN AVERY …..
wow I heard that the real reason we havent Sean Avery is the one that Got Gaddafi
We are about to find out, Lloyd..In a year or two. But it is structured, and has work habits, to become dramatically better.
??TEY EMIT OG TI SI
More than 3 hours, dde…
i just saw the tallest woman ever! she was probably close to 7 fit!! i have NEVER seen anyone this tall in my life! im kind of in a shock right now lol
CC, why not? I think it’s fair to measure his success by what he did in Tampa. He did a great job. It’s not like we’re measuring his success by what he did in the AHL, Junior Hockey, etc. Just my opinion.
And I know the Torts haters will probably bring up the fact that he won his only Cup with a semi-stacked team, but every year there’s a couple of stacked teams, with great records, that fail to win the Cup, so that wasn’t a “fluke”. Also, when the team went down the drain, he kept them competitive, and managed to sneak them into the playoffs with no-name goalies in net.
Torts = Damn Good Coach. I know most NYR fans have zero patience, and expect a Cup this season or next season, but face the facts, at the moment, we’re just not good enough. If some of these kids can take their game to the next level, then we’ll inch closer and closer, but for now, it’s not our time.
But I’m totally for firing everyone and trading everyone.
Good evening all! The worst thing about earning my keep on the road is I don’t get to post here during the day anymore….hartnell! I’m so behind!!
with or without heels C3?
Carp,
I am up in Albany and some very dark clouds started rolling in around 4:30 but looks like nothing really came of it.
That could be good, Mama, because you’re missing a few things that are worthy of some newspaper smashing!
I am 99% sure that Torts
hateshaving 5 in the picture.ORR
But you said it yourself that it is not fair to bring up his days in Tampa because its two different teams. That’s why i said that people need to stop looking back on what he did 8 years ago and start looking at what he is doing here now…and so far, it ain’t much.
Laurel
you know, i was so busy looking up that i didn’t notice if she was wearing heels… lol
Right now we kind of have a similar team to what Torts had in Tampa. Top goalie, top sniper, great playmaking center, solid young D (when healthy) complete second and third lines… so…the outcome remains to be seen, i guess
HAT TRICK!ORR, phew! Good to know. I just recycled today and am out of papers, but Sunday is coming!!!
I do agree, to some extent at least, CC. What I’m saying is, it’s unfair to bring up his days in Tampa, and say he’s not doing a good enough job based on the fact that we haven’t won a Cup yet. But, it’s completely fair to bring up his days in Tampa to prove that he is, in fact, a good coach.
And I partially agree that the teams are similar.
LGR! LGR!!
Orr and Thornton go at it. Pretty even fight. Orr’s letting his hair grow
Giroux scores on breakaway!
Richards & Carter who?
Fantasy points for me! Giroux!
C3, then she may have been just 6’6 in 6 inch heels :)
Latona, I had an awesome gourmet tuna salad sandwich for lunch today, but can’t recall all the details so I’m just telling you, not asking for anything!
What has OvechCANT done this season? I haven’t heard his name much this season.
redeh?look at me everyone Im Fedetenko's cheeksLook at me! I'm Eddie Belfour's urine!Ovechkin hasn’t looked like the same player since the 2009 playoffs….IMO
Err…. Not sure I want to look at you guys…. mmmmkay then….
Good point, NYR. I agree!
He has a goal tonight, but I haven’t heard his name much.
Ovie over? Lord yeah! Um, sorry for wicky…...getting my newspapers ready while fading to black. Hartnell working for a living, eh :)
“I don’t know if they’re doing a deodorant ad or something, but the refs arms are raised an awful lot” – Jack Edwards [Bruins play by play guy]
.....
How about now?
I mean, don’t get me wrong, the guy is still one the best players and an All-Star, but his play isn’t nearly as dominating as once was…
LOL! Good call by Jack Edwards!

That was one hell of an energetic shift for Ovechkin. And by energetic, I mean it looked like he was mainlining NyQuil.
LOL!!!
Everybody must be carb-loading for the big game tonight.
Too bad Ales Kotalik’s not playing for one of the teams.
Sorry, Mama, left the computer.
You get a lunch point! See how simple that was?
Carb-loading, Carp? I hope it’s not SSRIs loading…
SSRIs?
Hey, Greg!
Kotalik is with the Sabs AHL team, I believe.
Not looking forward to seeing Pigman. It’s a…..PIGMAN!
