That was a good first period. NYR played with their most intensity of the season. Gabby scored and showed everyone on team how to slide in from point into slot and finish. For all the whining about Sather around here, he committed two grand theft larcenies getting Prust for Jokinen and McDonagh and cap space to sign Gaborik for Gomez (who is hated in MTL).

I agree everything pre-lockout with Sather was a joke. Since the lockout, they haven’t done a terrible job. They developed a 7th! round goalie and turned him into a superstar! Their drafts have been good to pretty good, especially after the first round. They found Dan Girardi who was an undrafted UFA. They corrected the Gomez trade by using it to get McD and Gaborik signed. The Prust draft was a steal. Jagr and Shanny out of the lockout worked. Have they won a CUP? Of course not, but neither has SJ, Phily, Washington, and Vancouver who have better talent and spent just as much money. Quite honestly, whoever won the Crosby lottery out of the lockout was destined for greatness, like him or not it’s a fact!

Rangers have won only two playoff rounds since the lockout. For every Lundqvist there’s a Jessiman. For every good pickup like Gabby, there a Gomez. And a Redden, and a Drury…. Why point out other teams that haven’t won? I can point to Chicago, Anaheim, Carolina, Tampa who have all had worse teams to work with than Sather did and won the Cup.
If you’re happy with 8th place every year, (maybe) then Sather is your guy. He can’t put it all together. He makes more mistakes than good moves.

That period is why the officiating in this league drives me nuts. They call a soft first period and go letter of the law on the rule book with a soft call on Gabby and a soft interference on Sarich (This is not a NYR whine – this is a huge NHL fan whine) than in the second period they let them play and Gabby is hooked the exact same way he got nailed on and it’s a no call. Erixon gets his stick knocked out of his hands and it’s let go.
My suggestion for every NHL ref, let them play. Coaches would much rather a whole bunch of no calls for both teams and lots of 5 on 5 play than 1 or 2 soft calls and then the whistle goes away. I WILL GUARANTEE you there is at least 1 maybe 2 soft calls this period that will make the no calls in 2nd look like penalties. Players never know what’s a call and what is not. LET THEM PLAY!!

I think it’s safe to say that McMonster deserves some PP time when Staal is back and he doesn’t have to also play 26 5 on 5 and PK mins. He understands when to slip in from point and his shot is accurate. NYR have needed that from a defensemen forever. He doesn’t have to be Brain Leetch, that’s not what anyone is saying, but he does need to get his shot through which he can and they have not even had that in forever.

Up and down game for McD and Girardi, many terrible mistakes on defence, but solid at the end and what a great offensive instincts, especially by McD.
Yes Dubinsky made the play and it was his best effort so far this year. But that line all got raises in the offseason with the expectation they were going to take over this team and that has yet to happen.
The Boyle Prust Tank line was their most consistent line again for the second straight game.

MDZ is playing fine, some mistakes but not to many…. they need there forecheck to be better that is how they generate offense. down low, turnovers, etc….

Either Sather has done a good job developing this team coming out of the lockout and therefore “who we going to trade now” of the kids or Sather hasn’t brought us the CUP and therefore you have to realistic about this team and see their talent does not match Washington, Boston, Pittsburgh or the Flyers, especially on the back end which is why trading a guy like Dubinsky for a top defenseman is not a bad move.

This one is for the Torts bashers. I watch every game every night. Once hockey season starts, my TV and internet are set to Center Ice package on TV and Gamecenter Live on Computer and that’s really it. My wife wants to kill me at times but she’s a waitress and works nights.
Anyway, on Torts, there is not a team in the NHL that plays more as a team than this Rangers group. Hank talked about it when John asked him about the defense sticking together. Every player has to contribute for them to win and that credit goes to the Coach. Whatever you think of his personality, which as a former PR person in the NHL I found obnoxious at times, he’s a damn good coach.
I just can’t wait for 24/7 when Torts and my guy Lavy, two of the most impatient and grumpy coaches in the entire League, are surrounded by those cameras all the time.

Nevertheless, Stepan in this game was disappointingly soft, slow and did zero along the boards. Superhero – McD(baby Bobby Orr?), wonderful winning goal aside, had a hangover today, making too many mistakes. But I was again surprised how solid and calm was Ww(Woywitka)in hard situations back home. Girardi turns to be phenomenal, just don’t know how long he can play like that. Duby woke up and started do something useful. And Gabby will be flying and stinging star of the show. BR is his excellent self, and is waiting ammunition, like very few in league. Optimism rises. Well deserved win.
Could not disagree more about Stepan. He made that line go tonight and is anything but soft.

Stepan took an awkward hit in his first shift of the game and came back with no delay. Made the great feed for Gabby’s goal from the corner. He’s not big so he will get overmatched at times but if you want to see a good sized player play soft then look how easily Boyle stripped the puck from Bouwmeester to set up Prust’s goal.
All we are saying is give peace a chance.

I thought Stepan had a pretty good game. He’s no power forward but he made some good plays tonight, kept the puck alive in the zone too. He played hard in the zone too, I was surprised and noticed it too.

As I said it before, I’m not at all Sather fan and mention Sire Father few time is a good joke, but more habitual use, with serious (and baseless) use becomes a real annoyance and it remains me very much ritual “Hail Hitler” in 3rd Reich.
