New York, October 9, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Brendan Bell has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), and goaltender Scott Stajcer has been returned to Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Bell, 28, did not dress in the Rangers two games at the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere in Stockholm, Sweden.  He registered one goal and two assists, along with a plus-three rating in five preseason contests.  Bell ranked second among team defensemen in preseason scoring with three points and led the Rangers with a plus-three rating.  Bell notched the game-winning goal with 3:04 remaining in regulation, and added an assist on September 23 at New Jersey.

The 6-2, 205-pounder tallied two goals and nine assists for 11 points, along with 14 penalty minutes in 29 games with EHC Biel of the Swiss National League-A last season.  He led all team defensemen in assists and points, and tied for third on the team overall with a plus-two rating.  Bell also skated in one contest with Omsk Avangard of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), recording two assists in his only appearance.

The Ottawa, Ontario native was signed by the Rangers as a free agent on August 9, 2011.  He was originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round, 65th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Stajcer, 20, did not dress in the Rangers two games at the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere in Stockholm, Sweden.  He returns to Owen Sound where he captured the OHL Championship last season, and participated in the 2011 CHL Memorial Cup in Mississauga, Ontario.  Stajcer led the Attack and ranked fourth in the OHL with a career- high, eight playoff wins, posting an 8-4-0 mark with a 2.79 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in 13 postseason contests.  He ranked fifth in the league in playoff minutes played (688), sixth in saves (321), seventh in goals against average, and eighth in save percentage during the playoffs.  The 6-3, 195-pounder posted a 10-3-0 record with a career-best, 2.99 goals against average, a .901 save percentage and one shutout in 14 games with Owen Sound during the regular season.  He missed 50 games due to a lower body injury suffered on November 20 vs. Mississauga.

Thank you for the new string. I thought Erixon played well enough yesterday. MDZ a whale candidate when staal returns?

  2. JimboWoodside on

I didn’t see any Jet scores, other than the Winnipeg Jets…..

So, is Bell waived now? If they wanted to bring him back up, would he have to clear waivers from the rest of the league?

  3. I understand the value of awareness, but what do you think it costs the NFL to trot out all this pink equipment, etc.? What if they just donated that money to research?

  4. JimboWoodside on

You’re right, he did – but will he have to go through them again if he was to be recalled (probably not too likely)?

  5. JimboWoodside on

Hahaha!!! I call Antropov a bust, and he scores a goal – well, that’s good….

  6. Paul in sunrise on

Yes he already cleared and yes he will require reentry. Sorry should have been more specific. But with woywitka unlikely he gets a call right. I figure woy is the 6/7 with Emmy when staal gets back and one of the kids not subject to waivers gets whaled. MDZ in dogfight with Erixon right now. Gotta figure.

  7. JimboWoodside on

The pink equipment is all P.R., IMO……you’re right, the money could be better spent on research.

  8. Player who clears waivers and isn’t sent to AHL doesn’t have to go through waivers for 30 days. Whether the player needs to go through reentry waivers depends on his AHL salary. The cutoff is $115K this year, iirc

  9. Driving back from upstate. Well, mrs is driving, to be precise. The traffic just went from suck to blow.

  10. ilb, ever try route 84 and Newburgh-Beacon bridge? It might add 20 minutes to the trip, but almost never a backup like the TZ or GW.

  11. by the way, must be hockey season in Philly. Phillies went BUST! The Dream Team Eagles lost again today. What a shame.

Orr – fire Mike Tannenbaum. He’s had miserable drafts and made horrible personnel decisions this past off-season. He’s second only to Slats as the worst GM in NY.

  13. Speaking of Phillies. Both Snyder and Sather were wrong. At least in terms of baseball predictions. Fire both of them! Where is Olga?

  14. JimboWoodside on

Let’s just hope that the perennial *goalie-fail* in the playoffs continues for the Flys, if it doesn’t go bad during the regular season – so far, they’re looking pretty good.

    >>>The Jets look like the Thrashers.

They sure do – maybe even worse, if that’s possible…

Grew up on staten island. No byfuglien, my family drove nick futiu’s mom to a few home games. We were former yellow seaters from mid 70’s. Family gave up and moved to Florida in 93. Good timing huh.

WTF. Stacjer to the OHL? He didn’t even get a chance to play. Torts clearly had made up his mind before going to Europe. Now because of Torts’ personal vendetta against Stacjer we lost a goaltender that could play well as a backup or as our starter. And he kept stupid good guy laughtime Biron instead? Fire Torts!

  18. Besides my own posts today, the most unusual and ridiculous things I read today was that our former beloved Betts was physically unfit and returned (!) back to Phily. Never knew such a things exist in league. Guess, I still have to learn something even in my age.LOL.

  19. JimboWoodside on

I heard that Betts story, too – he was “damaged goods”, so the team that picks him up on waivers can send him back? That sounds like some new kind of rule….?

  20. I meant only bob reserved all rights to call him an idiot and demands fire squad for him in any post as a refrain.

  21. freaking penguins about to go 3-0 on west canada trip. oilers suck. we should be so lucky to get 2 wins out there

  22. JimboWoodside on

Is Malkin playing tonight? He was kept off the ice for about 1/2 the game last night….

  23. Teams seem to play worse against the Penguins. And it’s not because the Penguins are playing that well. They’re a good team, a very good team, no doubt (ft. Gwen Stefani). But it just seems so coincidental to me.

  24. JimboWoodside on

You’re right, Latona – and it’s even true when they’re without Skidley and Malkinstein……

  25. JimboWoodside on

He looks pretty good – he almost scored right at the beginning of the game….two names is enough for him, though!

  26. JimboWoodside on

I was gonna say that the Oilers PP looks like the NYR PP, but at least the Oil is getting shots on goal. We can’t even put any rubber on the opposing goalie!

  27. ‘Tis an inconvenient truth, Jimbo.

You can definitely see the potential in this Oilers squad. Barring anything major, they should be awesome in a few seasons. Unlike the Islanders, who still don’t impress me.

  28. JimboWoodside on

Yeah, these Oiler kids look pretty good – the Isles sure didn’t look like much last night, but just wait until we get out there to visit them on Saturday – they’ll probably look like world-beaters.

  29. I feel that battling for playoff positions in our conference is gonna be a real dogfight this season – I *hope* that the Debbies and Fishsticks fall flat on their faces, but I’m not really expecting them to….

  30. You wont say anything? I thought you might blackmail me into giving you Kovalchuckles! Bwaha!

Pens/Oilers going to OT. Nice finish to the game.

    Go Hall/Nugent-Hopkins!

I picked up this kid Dubnyk. Maybe he might be a legit starter, as opposed to the hacks I keep picking up, like DiPietro, and Labarbera.

  31. wicky©(Positionally sound=soft in NHL speak!!) on

haven’t looked, but will check it out in a bit!!

    is kovulchuken in it?? LOL

  32. We need Renney back stat! Then maybe we can trade Richards for Iginla and call Avery back up.
