  1. Erixon is smooth and calm, but he needs more bite to his game or he will turn out to be another Christian Backman.

  2. can’t say i disagree with the decisions. borque, mitchell and newberry all played well, though. the whale should be pretty good.

i thought erixon got pushed around a little, could use some more muscle and aggressiveness.

  3. Erixon, for the role they wanted him to play, simply wasn’t NHL ready. He isn’t your prototypical shut down defenseman, they need him for his offense too., and he has too many positional errors to rely upon yet. He needs more AHL seasoning. McIlrath, even though he appeared more NHL ready than most of us thought, needs two more years, imo…I guess they figured since they had Bell and Bickel there was no reason to keep him for 9 games. Let him get major minutes.

  4. BTW what did everybody think about Joe Micheletti’s comments last game about Boyle’s flu-like symptoms where he pretty much hinted that he was drunk or had a hangover because of baseball game and couldn’t play?

  5. Bourque will be a call up. The decision was right. We have enough PK guys, and it would be a waste to keep him and play 4th line minutes. He, along with Hagelin, Newbury, Weise and others, will play major minutes in AHL. None of them will hurt the Rangers when they get called up.

Someone argued about Mitchell vs EC. It’s not like Mitchell is a 20-22 yr prospect. He and EC are the same age, 26-27. At this point EC showed that he can produce better at the NHL level than Mitchell. Plus, of course, his unbelievable wrist shot and SO prowess. For the money he makes, he can play minimal minutes and contribute here and there.

  6. Boyle actually looked well yesterday, I thought..

If Torts decides to keep 23 man roster, 2 more cuts. One is, obviously, Stajcer. The other one will depend on Staal’s health. After he returns, Bell or Bickel will go to AHL. Otherwise- this is your team, boneheads!

    Morning ILB and all!!

I disagree with you 100% (respectfully) about Joe’s comments regarding Boyle. I think he was insinuating that Boyle was so distraught over the Boston baseball team losing that he didn’t feel well.

I also disagree with the idea many have that think we should keep bjork over avery. With his smaller size (not like aver is a giant or anything) and limited minutes (which is all bjork would get), I see zero reason to keep him over avery. Now snozzberries over avery is a different story.

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in Erixon. After reading all the hype and listening to most of you rave about him (not a dis, I was buying in), he was ok at best IMHO. Although I do not think either is ready yet for the NHL, Mcilrath looked more like an NHL player than Erixon did.

Please do not call weise (byers version 2.0) up…ever!!

A trade for a d man might make sense, especially with the injuries.

I hope bickel sticks in the line up. He hustles and isn’t afraid to mix it up.

Speaking of bickel, he was apparently kept on the big club due to learning the tort’s style of defence quickly. Of course that is the style of sliding on your stomach, perfected by OPG aka “the penguin”.

  8. wicky don’t be naive, Micheletti was definitely hinting something.

    Who is bjork?

I had a feeling Erixon was overhyped when we traded for him. Oh well, maybe he learns some physical play in Hartford.

  9. wicky© (Our D is a bunch of poussins and belongs in MAMBY PAMBY LAND!!!!) on

toronto needs a centre due to some injuries…just saying EC

  10. wicky© (Our D is a bunch of poussins and belongs in MAMBY PAMBY LAND!!!!) on

I may be a lot of things, but naive isn’t one of them. I think you are reading waaaaaaay to much into a bit of ribbing by Joe M.

Yep, he definitely needs to add physicality to his game.

  11. Erixson is OK, but obviously too soft for NHL yet, Bell is much tougher and I, personally like him in this games. Probably, we will have a McD’esk kind of pleasant surprise with him, if would be forced to use him under circumstances (which I don’t want to mention).

  12. bob tends to do that, wick. Micheletti was joking about the Red Sox … and you’d really have to be naive to think that anybody on MSG Network would actually say anything at all controversial. there’s just no way.

    Good afternoon, Sally!

Ha, “Brad Richards said the chance to rejoin his old Tampa Bay coach, John Tortorella, was just one of the many reason$ he $igned with the Ranger$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.”

I’m 99% sure it was because of the BENJAMIN$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

  14. wicky© (Our D is a bunch of poussins and belongs in MAMBY PAMBY LAND!!!!) on

FWIW, first one was a no go for me as well, but second one is G2G. Thanks!

    good point!

  15. billybleedsblue on

Capt. Ilb, I said I was only 99% sure. So, maybe I’m wrong. Lol. I’m sure given the chance to play in NY with Torts versus Toronto, he would take NY as long as the money was close. Once you get up to a certain point, that $10M really doesn’t mean that much I guess. Not bad at all for this guy to have the top 2 rated teams in $ worth fighting for him — what great timing for this guy to pretty much be alone in the FA market. Now win Cup please, thank you!

  16. Sather Must Go on

I am still disturbed about sather’s incorrect utterences at the press conference…about beating the flyers twice in the stanley cup…what the byflug was that? He runs the team….jeez

Defense is in some bad shape right now… Ridiculous, but i almost feel sauer will be missed as much as staal (for toughness)

  17. if Boyle simply was in a bad mood the team wouldn’t say he had flu-like symptoms. Amazing how thick some of you are to miss Michelletti’s sarcasm and hints.

  18. So our D is currently Mcdonaugh, Eminger, Girardi and Del Zotto plus a bunch of question marks.. I think it’s safe to say it’s time to trade for a solid stay at home D man. Not looking for anyone of all star caliber but there’s a pretty big hole there and that’s before you even factor in the chance of McD or Del Zotto struggling.

  19. Does anyone really care if Boyle was upset and or hung over? Does it matter? I swear. Some of you have sustained more head trauma then Marc Staal..too soon?

  20. Didn’t they say Boyle had the flu and Michelletti kidded he has sick over the Red Sox (teasing Boyle and by extension getting a dig in on Boston fan’s in general)

  21. Btw- for the few good things thayt EC does actually offer I like having him around. It’s not like he’ll be playing important minutes or in key situations unless there’s a slew of injuries to our centers. Not many guys have a wrister like that.

  22. Lol I can hear it now ilb. “We need to trade Boyle. He’s a lousy drunk and hasn’t scored in 5 games. Calgary needs a center let’s trade him and EC for Iginla!

  23. SMG

Perfectly possible Slats was hallucinating on cigar smoke, but he was referring to wins when he was with the Oilers. (Yes, Sather once actually won stuff!)

I’m 99% sure than Boyle’s bright red nose means his Gatorade bottle was full to the brim with absinthe.

  24. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Hagelin can’t make this team? Eminger the plug is in for another year? Say it ain’t so. Dammit, even Kreider would have been cut, from the looks of it. Some cold feet regarding rookies on the roster starting to surface.

This is the year breaking in three or four rookies will pay major dividends, in one or two years. But we backed off, for what, to pick up two or three more points in the regular season, if that?

  25. wicky© (Our D is a bunch of poussins and belongs in MAMBY PAMBY LAND!!!!) on

I was agreeing with carp on the naive thing, I agree with you on brich!

  26. JamesG- the problem with trading for a Dman is that you are unlikely to get someone who can offer more than Bickel or Bell unless you give up some major assets in return.

  27. ilb true- but again, not trying to say we should go after someone of an allstar calliber. Just that if there is a player who could quietly strengthen the blue line available they should try. Of course the right deal always has to present itself.

  28. Interesting. This could be our opening day roster, if Staal starts on IR and Stajcer going down. I guess Del Zotto has a leg up on Erixon for now and Bell may have played his way onto the team if they keep seven defensemen. No harm keeping all 14 forwards for now, since I don’t believe they are in cap hell.

Last chance to join the blog fantasy league. Two more spots available. League ID 55940, password rangers. Draft today at 5:30 ET.

  29. Stajcer will be sticking around for the two real Europansy games, as they get special dispensation to keep three goalies on the roster. It boils down to the Avery/Christensen choice or Staal going on IR, which you’d have to believe is the last thing the Rangers want to do.

  30. LMAO @ Travis Bickel!

I think Stu Bickel needs to clear waivers to go down, that may play a role in their decision.

  31. not surprised by the moves. i have liked what i have seen from bell. i think he gets 7th spot over bickel

  32. dont think Mara and Torts get along. if they did, I think Mara would’ve been here a long time ago.m

  33. I never liked giving Mara away….always thought him better than given credit for….Never understand the animus for Christensen. He may not always look like the males of Dogpatch on sadie Hawkins day, but often his sudden play has been a game changer. You can always find arm flappers but you also need a shadow now and then.

  34. >>Forward (5): Ryan Bourque, Carl Hagelin, John Mitchell, Kris Newbury, Dale Weise

Hahaha! Here’s what I wrote after Newbury scored yesterday.

“Newbury will be whaled after this match. 1-nil.”

  35. 99% sure that this blog is funny AND informative.

Fran you lost me after “i never liked giving Mara away”

  36. I don’t understand the love affair with Hagelin, he looks much worse than Rico Fata or Enver Lisin. Those 2 were hated by most fans, but their top asset was also speed, but at least they were a lot stronger and could hit hard.

  37. “I wasnt watching Bickell, what was his claim to fame?besides stepping up to Sestito.”

Honestly I didn’t see anything worth mentioning from him besides that one moment.

  38. Honestly Erixon does not look like a big point producer nor is he great defensively and is not a big hitter. And unless he dramatically improves his game in Hartford, he might find himself traded again once his “new and shiny toy” status wears off.

  39. I’m 99% sure that the Rangers didn’t get a 2nd round pick out of losing Fata or Lisin.

Was sure you’d join me in calling him Lube Stick, Orr…

  40. Erixon’s value is at its highest at the moment since he hasn’t made the team and was sent down to AHL….

  41. It’s not about being untouchable, it’s about somehow deciding that a consensus strong prospect, who’s 20 years old, after a few of his first games in North America, a few of his first games against NHLers, who’s only just been acquired, is a piece of garbage mostly because he’s not a big hitter.

Isn’t the whole point of him being in Hartford so he can “improve his game”? How dramatically it needs to be is a matter of opinion.

  42. If Sather listened to one third of proposed trades on this blog, the Rangers would be battling for the third place among Staten Island high school teams…

  43. Bob exhibits tiki-esque ability to rile certain people on this blog. Where’s tiki? Brian Boyle the drunk Irish guy from Massachusetts has a headache?! Really

  44. NYR_FAN via Android on

LOL! Trade every prospect under 22 who isn’t American!!!!

    The new GAG line….

  45. so basically you are 1% sure that this blog is 1% worse than any other?

I am very flattered that my phrase is so catchy, but I haven’t received any credit for being right about Staal’s headaches being not post concussion syndrome.

  46. Bob, I’m 99% sure that you are a 100% wrong. I gather that you do not work in the field of medicine. I do. And I would not even for a moment be willing to speculate what his symptoms are due to. But I can assure you that he is being looked at by the best people in that field and no one has come up with any absolute conclusions either way yet. But most importantly, if there is a possibility, even a small one (1%), that his symptoms are due to PCS, they should not take any chances and wait until he is symptoms free.

  47. True Blue Mike on

MZA-Richards-Gaborik sounds like a good line to me.

Trade Hank! and The guy with the “C” on his jersey! ;)

  48. I think it was great that those kides taken to Europe and got a lot of preseason game action. The best thing for them. Those guys werent making the team to start the season anyway.

Then I look at how the Whale just got seven new players. That should make them alot better and alot more fun to watch this year. It seems like the past few years thewe wer like two prospects on that team to get excited about. Grachev included.

I said it from the beginning although it is way too earlly to tell but I wouldnt put Wolski on that first line. He is not a playmake and he is not a grinder. he is a pansy

  49. Haha, Carp.

Dubi might be the best bet, but I really would hate to mess up the chemistry of AA-Cally and him.

  50. “wasnt jordan owens on the wolfpack a year or 2 ago? traded for newbury i thought.”

yes, pretty good player fast and hits hard, but not a big scorer.

  51. With such a roster in Hartford, they should win Baby Cup this season. Jokes aside, there are a really high quality* AHL* talents. In Talbot we have even strokes of brilliance and great future IMO; at least I was really impressed.

  52. I would put Dubinsky there, period. said it before. Sscrew this spreading out the talent. get a killer first line, second line will still be fine.

  53. Guys, let’s give Torts do his main job with 1st line LW, will ya? Particular, that he already answer countless times, that he will try whatever works, probably starting with WW, than Stepan, Duby (not sure MZA can play left constantly). One thing is clear for now – we not gonna get any “import”, so, he will experimenting with any “domestic” matirial for the best result, he habitually does it anyway.

  54. looks like i missed quite an important day.

I’m surprised Erixon was sent down this early but it really was the correct decision. We need Del Zotto to play since we lack that offensive threat from the blue line. I’m very surprised to see Stu Bickel still here since but good for him.

I highly doubt Bickel makes the team since he really isn’t an NHL player but it’s definitely a nice underdog story. Brenden Bell has done a nice job and if Staal can’t go, I have no problem with him filling in especially since, other than MDZ, he is the best offensive defenseman we have…

  55. I have it all figured out. Let Jesse Spector play 1st line LW, Let Bob write for the daily news, let Doctors figure out what’s wrong with Staal and let Torts decided who plays and where. No need to thank me for getting all blog issues situated Carp. just mail a check. *thumbs up*
