NEW YORK/TORONTO (September 1, 2011)—The following statement was released jointly today by Don Fehr, Executive Director of the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the National Hockey League:
“Everyone at the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players Association is profoundly saddened by the loss, within a matter of a few weeks, of three young men, each of whom was in the prime of his life. “While the circumstances of each case are unique, these tragic events cannot be ignored. We are committed to examining, in detail, the factors that may have contributed to these events, and to determining whether concrete steps can be taken to enhance player welfare and minimize the likelihood of such events taking place. Our organizations are committed to a thorough evaluation of our existing assistance programs and practices and will make immediate modifications and improvements to the extent they aredeemed warranted. “It is important to ensure that every reasonable step and precaution is taken to make NHL Players, and all members of the NHL family, aware of the vast resources available to them when they are in need of assistance. We want individuals to feel comfortable seeking help when they need help. “NHL Clubs and our fans should know that every avenue will be
explored and every option pursued in the furtherance of this objective.”

Did I get carped, lol?
I did too.

atta boy, Tony.
anybody who wants my Macbook can have it … but I’d have to report it stolen.
Repost:
To ilb: Let us know what the dealio is up there ilb….bring lots of belly bands in case the power is still out :) and let me know about the boat and DOCK!
Carp, I’m up for that…unless it was provided by the “camp.” No wonder you have problems…
LMAO!!!! First ever, Carp carp’d himself!!!!
I’d like to hear Don Cherry on these deaths. I’m sure he has some fascinating opinions/theories.
Seriously, I hope they follow ilb’s advice from previous thread and really do act on what they said in the release. Maybe it’s the times in getting news, but this does seem like an odd summer for NHL….I love this sport and, despite its many issues, always respected this league above others about how it takes care of its players…Am I wrong? Hope not.
Hartnell.
May you need any help with your lovely bungalo/cottage, ilb., simply let me know, and I’ll be more than happy to do so, particulary after I’m, just coming back from helping fix my son’s house in Delaware, hence adding additional emergency experience to my already long resume…
yeah, it’s a camp-issued gadget. piece of carcillo.
Ahhh. I thought. Then it’s not Apple’s fault, but camp’s…..That’s like telling your kids that they’re going to the best camp ever!....but they didn’t tell you it’s boot camp. :)
If you want it “lost” I’ll still take it and revamp that good engine :) LOL
This off-season’s Apple – PC discussion, while not making me thirsty, remind me never ending fight between pro and anti Avery forces during the season. Level of argumentation about the same, despite using a lot of technical terms, it comes on the end basically to simple conclusion – it is a MATTER OF TAISTE. (ask Mama). We, the people, agree.
Tastes Great!
4ever, LOL!!! Miss you, fyi….
Less Filling….sigh, just had to.
miss me ?
I’ve been shooting school pictures this week.
I shot over 7,500 kids this week alone.
If not for my deepest love and respect for Mama, I would also come with militant statement to stir a discussion: I’m Pro PC and Anti-Avery, but will die for freedom of Double A (Apple&Avery) lovers.
Nice pre-election campaign motto, isn’t it?
BTW,Laurel, did you received pics., I e-mailed you again per your request?
4ever, did I say I missed you? typo!!!
Tony, just reading that exhausts me. One day, I’ll tell you about the asshat who took my 5th grade picture….evil byfuglien!
Nope, 4ever, did not….:(
OK all, time to say …. you know….Been a long day online. Til tomorrow. TA!

all I will say is, whoo hoo! Sweet 16! Stay with us this year and do your thing…..all I ask….
billy,
I have issues with most operating systems. I hope Linux doesn’t take it personally!
Mama,
You keep all your lunch points!
ilb,
My aunt’s puppy is over. I’ll respond to your response when I get a chance.
Heyyyyy- go carp yourself!
It’s been a tough offseason for Bettman and co. Between the death of these kids and the health of Sidney Crosby being in question I don’t think theve gotten much sleep this summer.
ORR!!
I just had “Imagine Whirled Peace” for the first time and what can I say? Toffee Cookie dough + Sweet Cream Iced Cream + Chocolate Fudge = AMAZING.
Latona – you use Linux? Are you a computer hipster!?
You guys are still arguing about Mac vs. PC? Come on. It’s a personal preference obviously. Some people like to go to Starbucks and chat with girls about their “awesome and unique” computer. Some people like to be practical and by lumpy plastic things that don’t look sleep but work just as well. If you own Apple’s you’re pretentious. Just accept it. (I own an apple and have never owned anything else).
I use Windows, Manny. And I am no hipster! Maybe a doofus, though.
I have plenty of problems with Microsoft, too. Don’t get me wrong.
>>You guys are still arguing about Mac vs. PC? Come on.
Oh, did I miss all the fun?
You are not a doofus, Latona. Computers are better at stuff than me (even some emotional stuff). I am just amazed by all of them. I use macs because i learned on a Macintosh Quadra 605 when I was about…...11. I wish they still had the game “artillery” though.
I will tell you guys….Rye Whiskey and Iced Cream…although delicious separately are not good in succession.
>>...but I won’t let Apple be played up as the answer to anything.
Why don’t you just enjoy what works for YOU and not worry about Apple? They will continue raking in their billions whether you like it or not.
I am not going to let this computer talk ruin my hockey season!
JBytes,
I was asked a question and I answered it truthfully. I’m sorry if it offended you.
http://www.theonion.com/articles/apple-claims-new-iphone-only-visible-to-most-loyal,2772/
Onion article about Apple – there are COUNTLESS great ones…like..
“New Apple CEO: “I’m thinking printers!””
I have a great Apple story from back in the day…. I knew a woman who was high level alongside the the two Steves. Well, they were readying the new apple 2e and the source code disappears….Wozniak, from memory, writes over a million lines of code replicating what went lost ..a million byfuglien lines of code…. FROM MEMORY… Amazing
I happen to agree with Latona. I am not a big fan of Apple’s products. I use Android. I never liked iTunes. My 2nd gen iPod was a dud and never worked. It’s a great paperweight, though…
Nevertheless, Jobs is a brilliant businessman, one of the best in US history…he’s made his shareholders a hell of a lot of money….
I’ve always heard the hype about Apple having a vastly superior operating system over the years compared to Windows, but I could just never get over the cult-like adoration and near religious devotion that Mac users have for Apple products.
I’ve never tried working with a Mac, and I use some fairly high-demand applications that always are said to work much better on a Mac, but I can’t get past that weird devotion that Mac users have.
I guess I don’t want to be in the cult!
Lunch points for NYR and Jimbo!
Jobs is absolutely a brilliant businessman. Just so happens that many brilliant businessmen are liars.
Jimbo, you hit the nail on the head with the cult idea. Apple consumers have this hive-mind mentality.
Thanks, Latona – plus, the Hollywood crowd and hipsters are totally enamorata with the Mac platform, and I always try to be 180 degrees out-of-phase with those folks – it’s too bad, though…..a better, more reliable and less resource-hogging OS would be good for all of us.
so essentially its still cool to be the teenage kid rebelling against the masses. jeez, i thought some people get over that as they get older. its hilarious how people argue a dead issue, theres a reason more than just ‘its cool’ that apple has won most home-based consumer markets: it’s better.
Jimbo, you’re now only two points behind Sally! You have 401, she has 403. Mama’s in third with six, and ORR and wicky are tied at five.
the sooner Avery is gone , the better. call him lady gag. i used to support him, but his off ice crap has become completely unhinged. give his spot to a young guy who wants to play hockey, not a narcissist who uses hockey for his own purposes.
Oh-oh!!! Sally may put out a “hit” on me, if she’s the violent type…....my safety may be in jeopardy now!
Who knows Sally well? Should I be looking over my shoulder from now on!?
4 generations, while the Mac is probably a wonderful product, I believe that Windows-based machines still outsell Macs by an enormous margin.
Windows users are the “masses” – Apple cultists are the so-called “cool” folks…
Chapeau!
Manny, that one is awesome. I had the “Everything but the…” and “chubby hubby” again. I’m gonna try a new one tomorrow. Need to track down some new flavors!
Apple propriortized their operating system. dos was free, so PC’s naturally exploded.
now when I was in electrical engineering school almost 30 years ago I learned how Apple’s OS was superior becuase DOS was based on 8 bits and had the 256 kB memory limitations. Of course they also told me that clock speeds would never go over a few MHz because of stray capacitance introduced by all components.
I guess it is hard to predict the future. I remember my digital professor saying that EE would not change, everything about power had been discovered and all the changes would just be applying and installing computers in every electrical device imaginable, he got that one right.
now about the suicides, come on those hockey players have such a rough life. no its personal weaknessl. weve had enforcers in the game for 100 years, but this one year everyone goes up ion arms.
Its like a person seeing a 100 year flood and blaming it on car exhaust.
just found this from Dale Purinton
in regards to belak.
don’t know if it’s bad reporting or just…
surprising what he says
http://www.timescolonist.com/sports/Enforcer+wants+hockey+hits/5344906/story.html
jpg – That’s just got to be bad reporting. I couldn’t see Purinton ever arguing for hitting to be taken out of hockey. Why not just kill the sport or turn it into ice dancing?
ORR!! Get in here so we can talk about Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream!
Good morning, ‘heads! Reporting from upstate boneheads’ gathering place. Minor damage only, it’ll be fine for the next party :-). First, the water was so high in the lake, my boat along with the dock came over the holding poles and went for a little fishing trip, lol. It was caught by our lake security and as of this morning it’s back where it belongs. I’ll have to extend the poles I guess. And lastly, big tree fell over my neighbor’s property and took a few shingles off my roof. That’s it! I can certainly live with that.
That’s great news, Ilb! Glad to hear it.
Dale Purinton was a favorite of mine from the first time I saw him play in a Rookie game at Rye Playland against the Hartford Whalers. The Rangers had a Swedish d-man named Ola Sandberg who got jumped by some rookie on the Whalers.
The one thing you need to know about the Playland Rink is that the benches and penalty boxes were on the same side of the ice. When the Whaler rookie was escorted to the penalty box, Purinton jumped off the Rangers bench and proceeded to beat the byfuglien snot out of the Hartford rookie.
Gosh, I miss those old rookie games. I saw one at the garden before a Rangers-Fishsticks game that featured fight after fight between the Baby Blueshirts and Baby Fishsticks.
Thanks, Manny
Go Whalers!
(kidding! just reliving my childhood for a moment)
Glad to hear only minor damage at your place ilb.
hey tomb- u gonna be watchin hockeystreams again this year? it was fun last year wasnt it? chatting and fighting with other teams fans!! also, u were in one of the fantasy leagues we set up here right? makos or spiderpigs?
were is mako and nasty, somerset, uk, chuck woolery?? and othrs frm the boneheads league? wicky, u wanna set one up with me this year? we can co manage it or somethin
u guys see the story about how young and inexperienced our d is? and that it might be the bigest weakness n the team??? i couldnt believe it. were basically the sme d as last year and last year we had a great d. young or not, i know we dont have a real good offensive d man and alot of say at home types, but stil. the pp qb issue is handled now. so the need for a top offensive d man wasnt as great asit was last season. i think jan levine has it or jess rubenstein
Early morning hattie for Grabby!
I’ve read Purinton’s assessment of the way things are and also the way they should be, and find little to argue with him about, with one notable exception … he speaks of fighting and I believe that most will agree that very very few people are done serious hurt in hockey fights…but the bad hits from a superior position against an opponent are the real damage doers. The ones that are perpetrated by the Ruutus, the Cookes, the Torres, and the others whom you all can name. That is where the bad hits and the career enders come from. It’s those people who should be weeded out of the game..forever. They have a nasty streak at heart and they know full well the damage they do. I suppose you might think I’m remiss by not including Carcillo, and that is only because I have seldom found him being a factor in anything. He has very limited talent and when he goes into a brawl usually winds up the worse for it. I know I’ve omitted some other egregious performers but I cannot recall them all, and there are sufficient enough to start a very hard look at these individuals who play this type of game….....and simply remove them from their chosen careers. Again…just one man’s opinion.
Make it two men opinion, Fran. Vicious, blindsided hits, when opponent’s brain isn’t at the highest physiologic preparation state are by far more damaging than fights. There are few more jackwagons that are at fault on top of the ones you’ve mentioned, but what brings them together is that it is the only way they can play in this league.
Make it a two man, one woman opinion! Good morning all! Glad to hear about your place ilb. And now I gotta run for work…yay, money!
Thats good news ilb.
>>... I believe that Windows-based machines still outsell Macs by an enormous margin.
I believe all those PC manufacturers would love to trade places with Apple right now.
good news ilb.
sept 10th only 8 days away. traverse city on msg
I agree with Fran. They have to do something about the few who intentionally try to cause serious injuries with cheap (and I mean CHEAP) shots. The fights are the least of it.
that’s good news, ilb. Those stories and videos in some places in upstate NY (an elsewhere) are horrible!
Thanks, everyone…
Marji, you need to start working on your nails, girl. The preseason is only a few weeks away.
Finally some hockey news to read. Jesse has link to an article blasting Sather, interesting read.
grabs I’ll be on hockeystreams if all goes as planned.
I use macs and pcs…. One nice feature about the Mac…. No viruses…. Much better for multiple-media applications too… But there certainly some things that the pc does better….tomb – my undergrad is EE…. Toughest undergrad degree to earn I would say
Byfuglien can’t play in Canada? Border issues!?
I wonder if he’s yelling “Byfuglien!”
A cool misty foggy 58 F currently, how is the weather by you all?
Manny – I may be mistaken, but it is going to be near byfuglien impossible for byfuglien to score any byfuglien goals if he can’t byfuglien get into byfuglien cities like Montreal, Toronto, et al. Your thoughts?
Ladies and gentleman – The Beatles…
You say you will love me if I have to go. You will be thinking of me somehow I will know. Someday when I’m lonely wishing you weren’t so far away, then I will remember things we said today…..someday when we are dreaming deep in love not a lot to say….then we will remember things we said today….
That’s a byfuglien great point Eddie – Byfuglien needs to get on the byfuglien bus and head across the byfuglien border to play in his byfuglien home arena. The byfuglien fans are going to be really byfuglien upset if Byfuglien can’t byfuglien play. Becuase if he can’t byfuglien play, he can’t byfuglien score any byfuglien goals. If he can’t byfuglien score any byfuglien goals, he can’t byfuglien help his team byfuglien win the byfuglien game!
I think not being able to get into cities like Winnipeg would be a bigger Byfuglien problem…
He should just take a byfuglien boat instead…
Morning ILB and all!
ILB
that’s great news man!
Grabby
I’ll send you a msg on FB!
Anthony M
Great story about the rookie game
Macs vs PCs are like a porsche vs a muscle car. You don’t really ever do anything to a porsche because it is a porsche and doesn’t need it, muscle cars are always getting add on parts or something to increase their performance or looks. (maybe that is a bad analogy…nevermind)
Hey Wicky- that’s an awesome analogy.
A souped up Dell, wicky?
I’m not such a Europansy to be 100% anti-fighting and agree that cheapshots are perhaps more dangerous as a single incident, but it’s surely a huge fallacy to say that nobody gets seriously injured during fights.
No, you rarely see players knocked unconscious (Cooke/Savard-style) in a fight – Kypreos? – but it’s hardly a leap of faith to suggest the cumulative effect could have serious long-term repercussions. And plenty of players have suffered concussions, broken orbital bones, broken hands, dislocated shoulders etc directly from fighting.
So how many days til camp opens
N.Y. Born – this isnt a hockey blog any more…..here, we speak gibberish…..
....errrr, byfuglien gibberish….
good byfuglien mornin to ya wicky
aight….time for me to enter the other world….peace out my bruthas and sistas…
NY BORN – that answer is too many byfuglien days to count. I am done with this offseason Carcillo!
manny
thanks!
LW- I don’t think Fran’d argument was that no one gets injured during fights. Or about cumulative effects of fighting. His suggestion was, and I agreed with him, that one single cheap, blindsided hit has much more significant, lasting effects. Todd Harvey knocked himself out cold when hi missed and hit his face against tge ice during one of his fights. That’s tough to avoid. Was he something, eh…
Sorry for typos, folks…
That’s OK, ilb. We know your education is sound,
Actually, it has more to do with me trying to catch some fish and talk to you at the same time, Manny. I find this blog to be very distracting when it comes to fishing.
What type of computer do you have on your boat, ilb? Garmin? Apple? Dell? We need to discuss this computer!
also – the message boards on the American Bar Association website are HILARIOUS. Everyone takes themselves so seriously. I love this blog!
iPhone and Humminbird fish finder, Manny. Wait, Apple did come up with fish finders yet? Fire Jobs! Or trade him…
Speaking of firing…Does anyone know if Todd White has been signed yet? I need a back up team to root for.
I agree with my fellow europansy (sort of) on the cumulative effect of the fights. While I believe there are far more serious things than the actual fight (the BS un penalized takedowns in fights for instance), like boxing, MMA, football, or any other contact sport the cumulative effects of the physicality are always going to be there.
Do certain hits immediately contribute to unfortunate consequences? ABSOLUTELY!!
But those are few and far between when taken as a whole (don’t let the media propaganda fool you, a ton of legal hits go by “unpublicized”, but a guy leaves the game on a backboard (sadly) and all of a sudden there is no federal debt on CNN, just an injured hockey player.
We don’t stop driving cars due to accident potential. It is the risk of driving. That being said, if some one is at fault during an accident, they are ticketed or put in jail (DWI). Those at fault are punished and the rest of us continue to take the risk of driving.
I know some of you only use public trans or the hush puppy express, so please excuse yourselves from my point!

Hello?
Manny?
ILB?
Fish??
this is ridiculous
a wicktrick
Latona ends the wicktrick!
There is a federal debt, Wicky?
Amen – Trade Jobs! Good job, ilb.
I’m having a white nectarine for lunch, Latona. You can give my lunch points to mama…
wicky?
Are you sure, ilb?
Because of your infinite awesomeness, your lunch points grow exponentially. If I give it to Mama, the lunch point loses that redeeming quality.
Don’t forget that mama gets all kinds of snippy from time to time and gets her lunch points taken away as a result.
Hey!!!!! What the byfuglien!
ilb, you forgot to put the quote marks around fishing…:)
glad to hear everything’s OK, ilb.
for lunch: chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and a spritz of red wine vinegar on a roll. almost melted my face off.
Good afternoon, Sally!
Lunch point for Carp!
Anthony, nice bit about Purinton, I can totally see that happening. I am surprised to read his new point of view on violence in the game. I only agree with it in part, and that part is the blind-side/intent-to-injure hits. Good clean body checks and hip checks should always have a part in the game. When you remove the players’ right to play the man, you’ve changed the game from hockey to some Europansy soccer on ice.
Back to computers—I’m not sure who wrote it earlier, but DOS was/is NOT free. Just because you didn’t pay for it for use on your old clone, doesn’t mean that it was free. MSDOS/Windows is not free and open-source software. Even when IBM first started bundling the DOS with their PC’s in the early 80’s it cost like 30 or 40 bucks to get it with the machine. The fact that it was cheaper than the alternatives had a great deal to do with its popularity and success. Ok, that’s enough for now, lol.
Oh and, LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!
Yum Carp! I haven’t even had lunch yet, and I actually covered a welcome back employee picnic today for I place I freelance at. Idiot!
Excuse me, what about me? No lunch points? Now I feel like chopped liver….Hey, do I get lunch points for chopped liver?
Had you caught chopped liver and eaten it….yes (probably). I assume you would get points for catching and eating a fish. Pretty manly!
Only if you actually have it for lunch, ilb. I dunno. One piece of fruit? Maybe .5 of a point. But it’s Latona’s call.
interesting quote from an article by a guy most of you despise…
This quote from Mike Milbury, taken from a 1996 Sports Illustrated story, says it well: “The worst part for a fighter is that when hockey matters most, you become irrelevant,” Milbury said. “In Game 7 of a Stanley Cup series, chances are you won’t play or maybe even dress. A hockey player wants to play Game 7/ That’s what he lives for. Everyone wants to matter.”
here is a link to the whole article if anyone wants to give it a look, it’s by the guy that covers the avs

I had some of the funniest lunches ever and got no points. Not to mention being the guy to suggest an actual organized daily contest. I guess I’m not much of a competitive eater lol. There’s always barber college…
I’ve had bad, good, great and so-so lunches, but I can’t say mine have ever been funny.
ilb,
I was about to award one but you never confirmed whether or not it should go to Mama!
billy,
I have you down for three points on my chart. If you think you were awarded/deserve more, let me know! I’d be more than happy to listen.
Tony from AZ September 1st, 2011 at 7:06 pm
I shot over 7,500 kids this week alone.
I hope you have a good trail lawyer Tony…or don’t let those coppers take you alive!
OOWER BACK ON, YIPEE! CT, THE NEW THIRD WORLD!
POWER NOT OOWER. FINGERS NOT WORKING YET!
My (p)ower too, Jeff.
Power and oower to the people!!!
fyi, anyone who beeatches about the “over reaction” to Irene doesn’t live in areas that are still seriously hartnelled. So shut the byfuglien up.
Power = vi = i2 r = v2/r
oh good grief, e3 math…I have no idea what that means, bur good for you :)
See Good Will Hunting…:)
what that means is bullcarsillo X horsecooke + byfuglien piece of hatnell.
hartnell it is, pardon your highness…
Ha 4ever! Good one!
OK all, til tomorrow….TA!

lol, Latona, I’ll take my 3 points! great to know that I’m on the board! Or is it bored? Hmmm…
EddieX3, please pray to the Math gods for me as I am working on some crazy little project.
4ever—nice equation hahaha.
Understatement: We are strange birds around these parts.
Oh, and, hey Carp, please make the hockey start soon! Rangers’ fans everywhere are anxious to see this team play.
Wooo! I fixed my computer! Weeeee!
I’m semi-relieved!
Bring on the season!
There is a video on YouTube of this guy in his boat on a lake in upstate New York passed out with white nectarine juice all over his face and an empty bottle of imperia vodka in his hand. Through the whole video, fish are jumping all around the guys boat.
Hilarious!!!
Guy’s boat, not guys…sorry for the typo
Congrats Orr!
Sweet a Hattie
And a bag lady with a shopping cart!
working on that billy.
Let’s Go Rangers!
yes, LGR!!!
Wicky – that is some funny carcillo that you posted about ilb and the jumping fish :)
Yeah LGR !!!!!
Jack Sock vs Andy Roddick good match….
Sock & Rod. Sounds like a scene from American Pie.
Orr – are you watching?
Russian guy, wicky? Passed out? After drinking just one lousy bottle of vodka? You can not be serious !!!
Nah, I’ve only been watching the girls.
Sharapova loses early, naturally. My main girl, Kirilenko, wins! I’m satisfied, for now!

ilb, I am working on my nails for the upcoming season. Hurricane Irene did not help the cause. (see: nail biting is not your friend)
I am thinking that September might be the worst hockey month. It’s so close now you can taste it but Latona won’t dispense with any lunch points!
Ok, that’s my bits of wisdom for today. I hope I did not get carped!
Zdorovo, drug!
Good morning, heroically patient boneheads!
To begin this day with a laugh today…
I consider our RR community a family, and like to place this post : ” Families are like panties… Some crawl up your ass. Some snap under pressure. Some don’t have the strength to hold you up. Some get a little twisted. Some are your favorite. Some are holy. Some are cheap. Some are naughty. Some are full of carsillo, and some actually cover your assen when you need them to”. I think, everyone can find here something to fit the description.

Good morning, ‘heads!

LOL, 4ever!
new post.
