Still decompressing

I could get used to this vacation stuff. Three days already, two rounds of golf, lots of swings, not many lost balls.

Still 11 days left.

Got nothing else. I apologize for those who volunteered to do guest blogs and are awaiting a response from me. I’ll get on that, but it’s pretty wide open. Meanwhile, if you haven’t volunteered yet and still want to do one, let me know at The next 10 days are open, as are most of the week of Aug. 22-28.

Not planning any golf today. But tomorrow, yes, and Monday. Yee-hah!

PS, the original Izzy Mandelbaum episode was on last night. Magic Pan! Hah. Where is Izz?

  1. Good Morning on this day of nothing, Carp you should do a blog about nothing….

    Have a great day all.

  2. Its August and we’re bored right? do you think this team can win it all? me either. thats why another oiece is needed. Weber! Nashville can’t afford him and we have lots of pieces that we can use. here’s where everyone will beat me up. Staal, Delzotto and a prospect or 2. they get peices they can afford and be happy with on the backline. we get our stud that we all hope..ed Staal would turn in to. The manned points of our PP would be pretty good don’t you think?
i love playing GM. do you think i’d get fired?
Remember Carp. Drive for Show and Putt for Dough!

  3. Yeah, that’s it. It’s go time. (points to the weights he put down) …….Let’s see you lift that.

  8. The summer wind came blowin’ in
    From across the sea
It lingered there to touch your hair
    And walk with me

    All summer long
    we sang a song
And then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind

Like painted kites, those days and nights
    They went flying by
The world was new beneath the blue
    Umbrella sky

Then softer than a piper man
One day, it called to you
I lost you I lost you to
    The summer wind

    The autumn wind
    And the winter winds
    They have come and gone
    And still those days
    Those lonely days
    They go on and on
    And guess who’s sigh`s
His lullabies through nights that never end
    My fickled friend,
    The summer wind
The summer wind warm summer wind
    Mmm the summer wind

  9. Lou – I think all signs point to Weber being dealt sometime before the deadline and next years’ UFA season. But it’s going to take a lot more than what you listed to land him. Thinking along those lines, look at what Anaheim had to give up for Pronger: Lupul, Smid, two first rounders(one which was used to draft Jordan Eberle) and a second rounder. Keep in mind, Pronger was four years older than Weber and was demanding a trade, meaning the Oil had little to no leverage. I think if and when the Preds move Weber, the package will start with two established young players, maybe even three, plus a combination of three prospects and/or picks.

No doubt, he’s a franchise player. But with Gaborik, Richards and Lundqvist all making in excess of $6 million, your start to run into cap issues when you add in a fourth. That said, I’d still love to have Weber.

  10. yeah its Ronaldo… shame what happened to him… he has hypothyroidism and had to quit soccer because of it. He was one of the greatest ever.

Look at the first picture… do you notice anything? :)

  11. I didn’t know he had a condition? That’s so sad. He was great. Man.

First Picture: I see a Cat; Fat Ronaldo; Hot Chick; Chinese Woman

  12. yeah… he has a condition. you’re a pro footballer, you don’t just get fat out of the blue. ;)

fat cat! you got it. not sure if the cat was actually there or someone “put” him there…if you know what i mean to compare those two fat cats :P

  13. Preds can always work out an extension. Longer term, lowering the annual cap hit. Although their big issue going forward is that Rinne and Suter are also slated to become FAs.

My big question is how much this impacts what Doughty is going to demand. He doesn’t have arb rights but next year he will if he only takes a 1 year deal. Do they throw him a Stamkos type contract, which given yesterday’s award for Weber looks like a below market deal for his arb eligible RFAs years and certainly a steal for a couple of his UFA years.

  14. Johnny, you’re not wearing a shirt, are you?

CCCP, I still don’t know who that is.

    Good morning, Sally!

Lou, that drive for show thing is a bunch of carcillo. if you don’t get off the tees, you can putt all day and it won’t matter.

CT, you have a really nice voice.

  15. Carp, since you are so into Seinfeld dont you think its time we start talking about Curb you Enthusiasm. I mean Palestinian Chicken was up there with all the great seinfeld episodes.

I think it’ll be a nice way to get through the dog days of August

  16. I wonder what the Russian’s record against Germany is on the pitch?

You could always sing the song the English use against the Germans to cover up their miserable record against them.

“One World Cup and Two World Wars, doo-dah, doo-dah”

  17. Remember last year? We were so bored we were counting down the days to October with famous players’ #’s in sports! It was kind of fun…

What the hell was Avery tweeting last night? Was he inebriated?

Carp, we should have a Boneheads golf outing! Maybe Lohud can pay for it?

  18. I love Seinfeld, but I’ve never really been interested in Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’ve seen a few episodes and thought they were somewhat entertaining. I did watch the Seinfeld episodes from last season.

    Meh, I don’t know!

  19. Phil, i’m not sure he’s going to even start with Nashville. reports are they will be in trouble this year with just making it to the cap floor. yes it would be a bit of a strain with Gabby, and Hank, and their salary, but by the time Gabby comes off we wont want him back a that high of a number. think about Weber manning that spot for the next 10yrs. he would be worth the price. I’m sure we have enough “cheap pieces” which include Staal, Delzotto, and some first rounders, prospects to satify nashville. First rounders, if your going deep intot he playoffs or winning the whole damn thing are low picks anyway.
    man i love this job!

  20. Preds barely are above the floor with Weber’s $7.5M. Staal and Del Zotto combined are under $6M.

I’d use the trade that the Blues and Avs made last year as a guide for the type of talent it would take to get someone like Weber. Basically Erik Johnson (who is good, but not Weber-level good) and a bottom 6 quality forward) were swapped for a potential 30 goal scorer and a pretty high ceiling puck moving D. Given Weber’s age, the fact that he has one more year as an RFA after this season and obviously his overall ability, I don’t know if the Rangers actually have the pieces to make a trade happen.

  21. LOL CT!

and what should the Russian (not Soviet) team be serenaded with? “No world cups, and one qualification, drunk bears and years of humiliation! oy vey oy vey” :)

  22. actually they did qualify “tree” times since 1990… the best they did was group stage – 17th place. But i do not consider this as “qualification” if you cant even get out of the group stage lol

  23. Curb Your Enthusiasm is an incredible show.

I love Seinfeld. Both are terrific. But Seinfeld is just so special because of WHEN it was on television. Plus it’s syndicated, not on HBO and in reruns.

  24. CT – They have the pieces, but the question is what will the team look like when(or rather if) they do the deal. You got to think Staal would have to be part of the discussion. Maybe a guy like Dubinsky too. Then spice up the package with Kreider and Pashnin. That might get it done. I don’t think they’d even respond to an offer of Staal, Del Zotto and picks.

  25. The Preds have a pretty good defense, with or without Weber. What they need is scoring.

Dubinsky, Artie, and a top forward prospect like Kreider. Maybe even Sour or McDonut as a final piece to replace Weber, if they don’t have any prospects ready to step in. Girardi could be another useful piece to them.

I think we have the pieces to get Weber, but we don’t have the pieces to compete with what other teams would likely offer.

I’m thinking aboot calling NYR “pieces” from now on!

  26. I, too think we have enough to offer to get the deal done, but it will empty our system which took years to build. The only good news is that eventually Nashville may be forced to trade him, than the price may come down. But I don’t think it will happen this year. They are all set with just above the floor. Weber brings fans to their arena, why would they trade him now?

  27. I prefer when we stick to creating line combinations as opposed to trades -at least the damage we do can be quickly repaired.

  28. Screw Weber! Let him and his 7.5 mill salary rot in Nashville!

Guys like Sour, McDonut, Erixon and even MDZ could turn into Weber in few years. Don’t laugh! It could happen!

  29. Jagr calls Pissburgh fans – little girls!

Speaking of acquisitions, Jaromir Jagr is proving to be rather awesome in his early quotes. Teemu, Broad Street Hockey’s cowboy-hat wearing European hockey correspondent, passed along the following from Jagr:

“I know I’m the number one enemy in Pittsburgh. I don’t know why and I don’t care.

It’s like when a boy breaks up with a girl and the boy is totally over it, but the girl starts to throw crap.”

  30. That is freakin’ AWESOME. I like how he is intimating that whenever a girl breaks up with him she throws stuff at him.

  31. Did any NHL12 fans know that there will be a Winter Classic game included?? Cool! I just saw pics of Craps vs Nucks. It was snowing! Weeee!

I’ll be getting the game, and once I get back to my NHL10 form, I’ll be destroying everyone!!

  32. Would much rather sign Parise next year than trade for Weber . This team still needs scoring

  33. CCCP – I agree. I think Weber would certainly help the team, but I’d rather see what we have on the ice in October first before blowing up the roster. That’s the greatest part about the Rangers going into 2011 – they’re very versatile and deep. Just thinking about the center position. They have one top-line center(Richards), two second-line centers(Anisimov and Stepan), a wing who could easily move back to the center on either of the top-two lines(Dubinsky), a good third-line center who can move up to second line(Boyle) and two fourth-liners who can pivot(Rupp and Christensen, but hopefully the latter is gone). Plus, they have a number of quality AHLers who could easily make the jump and pitch in.

On Jagr – Good for him. Still hate that he’s on Philly, but I’m glad he stuck it to Pittsburgh. The organization and its fans were total ingrates when it came to his departure. They boo’ed the guy because their stingy organization was too cheap to pay him what he was worth, when in truth they should have been kissing his ass for delivering two Stanley Cups to them. What a worthless franchise that is. The only thing more worthless is their girly fans.

  34. yeah the new NHL 12 will be sweet! You can bump goalies now! The only thing i don’t like is that you will have to pay for new hockey cards to build new Hockey Ultimate Team! I don’t even know how much i spent on those cards to build teams! And i still suck lol

  35. phil

wicky would disagree with you on Jagr. If you ask wicky… he’ll tell you that Jagr slept through those two championships in Pittsburgh.

  36. CCCP, I know who Pele is.

NYR, Lohud can’t pay for the tees.

Not big on Curb. I mean, it’s funny. But it doesn’t crack me up. And Larry David comes off as such a low-life jackwagon. And the other actors just aren’t good comedic actors at all, IMO. In Seinfeld, all four regulars and all the supporting actors — Newman, the Costanzas, Seinfeld’s parents, Uncle Leo, Puddy, were hilarious. In Curb, Larry’s wife is a zero, Larry’s agent is marginal, his agent’s wife stinks …

  37. phil- IMO we need to show a little more patience than “October”. Give our guys as much time as possible to fill our needs.

  38. ddebened – Certainly! I didn’t mean give it a month and then start firing away on trades, unless there’s an obvious issue with the team. I have a fair idea, however, where this team is right now and I don’t think they’re going to be making many moves at all next year unless a deal too good to be true comes a long. Essentially, we have the team that went up against Washington back, a year more mature and with both Richards and Callahan in the lineup. I think I said it here before, but I suspect this will be a top-four team. The only teams I see as tougher then the Rangers are Washington, a healthy Pittsburgh and Boston. Every other team has a weakness that the Rangers don’t.

  39. Late reply to the the replies about trading for Weber.

I’m not 100% convinced the Rangers actually have the pieces to trade, or if they did they wouldn’t create a hole in a different spot on the roster.

As Orr said, the Preds could seek the dynamic offensive player they’ve sorely lacked for a long time. Again, using the Erik Johnson for Chris Stewart+Kevin Shattenkirk trade as a proxy, I’d say the premium that Weber has over Johnson might bump a potential perennial 30 goal scorer such as Chris Stewart into a proven 30 goal scorer, which outside of Gaborik the Rangers don’t currently possess. While we can debate about whether Callahan or Dubinsky or Anisimov or guys like Thomas and Kreider could turn into consistent 30 goal threats, you have to consider that Nashville is looking to build on finally advancing in the playoffs last year. With a bunch of FAs (UFA and RFA) looming in the near future they probably aren’t going to want to wait to see if prospects turn into sure things.

  40. That was a dumb trade by the Avs. I mean, E.Johnson has the potential, and is only 23, but to give up both of Stewart and Shattenkirk. That was overpayment, in my opinion.

I don’t know why they gave up on Stewart so quick.

I’d love to have that kid on NYR.

    morning ILB and all!!

    Summer effing blows…PERIOD!!!!

The mrs and I are HUUUUGE Seinfeld fans, but we both think curb kinda sucks!!

  42. I don’t know if Stewart is going to be a 40 goal guy, maybe be like a 35 goal, 65-70 point player. If Johnson becomes becomes 45 point D that helps tighten up the Avs D then I’d say that part of the trade was worth it. But yeah, the throw-in the Blues sent compared to Shattenkirk was a dumb move.

  43. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

Just jagr being jagr! Sometimes their fans are being girls, but so are rangers fans and all fans in general. He is just being smart and media savvy by dissing pens fans and gaining fan support in philly. That being said, too bad he couldn’t take the honourable road and just say hey I’m playing for their in state rival now and I can see why they would be upset, they were great when I played there! Him not doing that doesn’t shock me either!

I have never once said he wasn’t an offencive force and a great one at that, nor have I said he was stupid. He has never won a single thing as a “leader”, he is a great wingman though. I don’t think I have to elaborate anymore about his lack of effort half the time or about being a crappy captain, so we will leave it at that!

  44. Yeah I remember that article. The Avs weren’t contending for a Cup, not with the goaltending and the defense they had. And please, any of the powers in the West would have destroyed them in a best of 7.

  45. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

  52. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© " Don't stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    Jagr wouldn’t say anything bad about the Rangers …he know the Rangers ;

    #1 Ranger just play hockey.

    #2 Don’t “clean house”

#3 Arn’t losers that get “lottery picks”

Teams that win because of the high draft picks are really like Lotto winners. Lotto winners get rich but really never worked for it. They collect all this money that they FLUKED off and then reap the rewards of free money. Lotto winners never really earned the cash so they ultimately throw it away and do it all over again. Many NHL teams fall to this and are really building LOSER franchises like Chicago, Pissburgh , Ottawa and so on. The Rangers like Detroit do NOT do this!! These teams are real teams. I hate Detroit but they draft really well.

  53. honestly del zotto tweets irk me. he is way too cocky for a kid who has done squat

can the kid just focus on training and enough of all his stupid tweets.

del zotto and jesse spector should be banned from tweeting.

  54. Yeah. It really pissed me off when Del Zotto wished his dad a happy birthday. The guy wished him 51 happy birthdays before that, so why do it a 52nd time? Focus on getting your game to the next level. He doesn’t need these distractions, dammit!

  55. Orr, I don’t think DZ was around for probably the first 31 or so of his dad’s bdays.

  56. Definitely Trade Del Zotto. Tell him to work on his footwork and shot from the point rather than sitting around drinking Natural Ice and playing Mike Tyson’s Punchout all day.

  57. Del Z needs to get traded ASAP. How does he have time for all this nonsense? Doesn’t he have a gf? I know Stepan does…

  58. Greg L. – Spot on about Pittsburgh. I give Chicago a little bit more credit, since at least their fans have class unlike the abhorrent Pens fans and their beloved Crosby.

Orr – If Carp’s suggestion is right, that Stepan will slide to the left with Richards and Gaborik, I don’t think ‘slump’ is going to be the word to describe his production. That’s a lot of hockey ability and vision on one line.

  59. Wicky (Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass) on

If I trade with the preds for weber (hypothetically speaking) and use young forwards and high end forward prospects to get him, I sure as he’ll try to get hornqvist back as well!

    other than autocorrect, yes!!

  61. Boom Boom Bathgate on

Bubba Smith, of course, played in the classic 10-10 tie MSU-ND game of 1966. It’s one of the games many, including myself, would nominate as the “greatest” of all time, along with Army-ND, in Yankee Stadium, 1946, 0-0 tie; and Nebraska-Oklahoma, 1971, with Nebraska winning, 35-31. I think I will take the latter as the all-time best, as Coach Ara P. settled for the 10-10 tie, although I always wondered if ND missing three key players – RB Nick Eddy, All American center George Geodeke, and QB Terry Hanratty, impacted his decision to opt for a “moral victory?”

I dismiss Army-ND, although not on hype because it was as hyped as any college football game could ever be, but because, when I purchased the audio play-by-play account of the game, I was shocked to discover that a 0-0 game could include 10 (!) turnovers. Smashing game, yes, but far too sloppy in that regard to call it the greatest of all time. Plus, for some unknown reason, each team disdained an attempt at a chip-shot field goal. Insane coaching, that is.
