Bye, bye July

Last day of the month. Tomorrow starts the official Dog Days. OK, maybe not official.

I’ve got nothing and maybe we should get used to me saying that, because I think it’s going to be a slow, slow month, at least until we get reasonably close to training camp.

My vacation starts tomorrow. I’m going to be here most days, if not all.

Still looking for guest bloggers. The response to the first request was pretty slim. But if you are interested in doing one between now and Aug. 14, or one from Aug. 22-28, please drop me an e-mail at Pick a date. Most of them are open. Tell me you want to write that day. It’s that simple.

And, again, I want to thank you guys for coming here day after day in July. Our traffic numbers were pretty darn good. Youse rule.

Gratuitous Sean Avery photo by AP.

  1. Good morning, boneheads!

I got nothing. Except it’s been a perfect fishing conditions this morning. You want me to talk about that? :-)

  2. Great effort Carp, and we all appreciate what
you’v e created here, and I’d have volunteered but frankly, I’m not competent. Too far away from the sturm und drang, and the day by day action that goes down that can only be handled by NYers.

My forte is ancient history and an occasional quip or smart alec remark, but I leave it to YOUSE…..
(oh how long I’ve waited for an opportunity to say that) to carry the mail on the inside stuff. Have a great time…you’ve earned it.

  3. Perfect fishing weather yesterday and today. Still having trouble getting going today after a Fluke fishing tournament yesterday. (No money won….again)

Carp, nice picture of Clark Kent

    Enjoy the day all.

  4. Fran, I think most of us will gladly take your post on ancient history or whatever else you decide to write. Would love to see your guest blog.

    Morning ILB, fish, and all!!!

    you are my hero!!

So the bag lady made an appearance last night…wow, I mean holy laurels!!!!

Glad mama had sweet dreams and got nominated for president and all kinds of things (in french) last night. Guess I picked the wrong time to leave the blog. BTW dde, careful with baiser, if you drop the “r”, you have opened a huge can of worms!

  6. Thank you, fran. Frankly we’d love to hear your musings on any subject. so if you change your mind, please pick a day and drop me an email.

ilb, don’t fish on your iPhone.

Chopper, that’s actually a great nickname for Avery. Clark Kent. This mild mannered fashion model who wears blue, red and white under his duds and becomes this nut-job hockey player as his other identity.

    Good morning, Sally!

  7. Yeah, WTB was that all about. With French last night…sheesh

Speaking of worms…I’m almost out of night crawlers.

  8. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

did bull dog get his credit in the post somewhere for allowing you to use a pic from his personal collection??

  9. bull dog line on

I wanted to give Carp a picture of Avery scoring a goal, but alas, there were none.

  10. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

not true, I said you could use any of those jagr photos, you just wanted one with him working his assen off during a game, and those..well those are extremely rare!!!

  11. Fran – you’ve got to be kidding! You write the best stories here….I for one would love some ancient history–always interesting.

glad you are here, the watch is now yours…I have to mow!!!

    later assens!

  19. Mow, you must. Watch your Toews, Wickster.

Prust, with the great line calling Avery the best dressed on the team ..and the worst dressed on the team.

  20. Good afternoon all! Really? I finally get here and wicky disappears after 50 posts! Byfuglien!

Carp, you are my hero today! Thanks!!!!

  21. LW3H – I hope you put your thumbs in your pockets when you “reckoned”. :)

Totally unscientific? I’d argue that if I had a clue what my point was. Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty?

I guess it was that Americans learn to play hockey right handed, which might not be to our advantage because we learn baseball in way (batting right handed) that might not be to our advantage.

Yeah that’s probably unfounded but it could be why we are better at dumping and chasing and grinding and making fun of Europansies and what’s wrong with that!?

Seriously though I’d like to see the number of left/right American players (all levels) compared to other countries.

“The majority of players bat right-handed, but I suspect the proportion that bat left-handed is higher than the proportion of left-handed people in the population.”

Interestingly, I just read that a higher percentage of lefties are in the baseball HOF

    IMHO Thanks

  22. “Avery and his dorky glasses. And i thought he had a sense of style.”

Apparently, the nerd glasses are “in” now, CCCP! LOL!

This is worth a read, dde. Pretty sure numbers for the UK won’t be out there, but I wouldn’t be surprised for the proportion of right-shooting players who learned the game here to be much higher than the other Europansy countries listed.

I’m right-handed and right-footed. I don’t play hockey (gasp!) but I’d probably be more comfortable being a left-shooter if I did. But I’d be lot weaker holding a cricket bat left-handed and wouldn’t even come close to being able to hit a golf ball left-handed.

  24. billybleedsblue on

There was a practice at Rye some years ago when TGO and the Messiah were together in NY where as a little warm up, they scrimmaged with basically everyone on the ice but shooting opposite handed. Seeing Leetch as a righty was pretty funny and also how awfully uncomfortable everyone looked out there… It was just something fun for the players and the fans at the practice I guess, not something you would want to do often. For the record, I am right-hand dominate and shoot lefty. I am left-eye dominate and bat righty. Sorry to buck the trend. :D

  25. LW- So the predominance of lefties is Europe vs US/Canada as opposed to Europe/Canada vs US, based on NHL players?

Interesting that you would be more comfortable being a lefty in hockey but in other sports righty would be your preference.

“I have noticed that among players who picked up the game in the US later in life, there are many more right-handed shots – most likely because right-handed people play right-handed in golf and baseball”

That’s basically, what I’m saying. Not sure how to account for Canadian righties though. Perhaps lacrosse.

  26. ilb – Your post has me feeling that I’ve crossed you. If so, please let it be known.

  27. Carp, I think it’s quite appropriate, but I’d omit the nut-job reference :) I also like how he wears his super hero uniform to the “office” as opposed to the other way around….

  28. I play everything including baseball and golf right handed, but I play hockey left handed. I don’t know, it must be something about the stance or the fact that the hands are apart on the stick that makes it more comfortable playing left handed.

  29. Today is my last day on the blog for a week! Heading down to LBI for a clan Latona vacation.. I will miss you guys greatly and I’ll try to sneak on every now and then, but I doubt I’ll be able to. I need to allow someone to distribute lunch points.. who should it be?

  30. Have a great time Latona! Can I distribute the points, please!!!! I promise I won’t award any to me, but I get 100 for filling in.

  31. I once picked up a hockey stick. Lefty or righty, I may as well have been using my feet.

  32. When I was at St. Lucia in the spring, the hotel had a room with two computers for guests. I managed to sneak away from my mom daily to check the Report. You can do better Latona :)

  33. Wicky (Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass) on

Oh sure! Mama laurels a ton and I miss her!

More accurate lefty, harder shot righty!

Yep, that guy! I always think of eminem’s buddy from 8 mile, cheddar bob, that shot himself in the leg when they talk about that guy!!

  34. Grabby! Where you and Gabby been?!
The only shark I like is the one I use to vacuum….awesome for pet hair!

wicky, that must be one big lawn you had to mow you bag man.

  35. The topic of guest bloggers and today’s (awesome) pic made me go into the RR vault but I couldn’t find the link I wanted, dang it. But I remember this: back when I was a paid blogmama and worked this place, my very first official post started with this:

And oh, the carcillo I got! You all were brutal! Glad to see times have changed here, even if Carp used him in a suit :)

    LOL :)

  36. Good evening, Carp!

Finally home from my road trip. How is everybody?

4ever, sorry I missed your big 26th yesterday! Hope you had a wonderful bday!

  37. Sally, we shall talk :) Maybe you’ll help me through my ink fears up there…

  38. lol Wicky I missed your “baiser” comment from earlier. Yeah, that could have been ugly.

Ricardo – I just sent you an email but forgot to attach my triple name to it…

I would love to read a guest blog by jimbo, Fran, anthonyM, and boom boom from a historical point if view – days of games past … Also LW wrote a brilliant piece a bit ago … wouldn’t mind at all to see another byline from him… Also, rod brings a great perspective… I welcome more musings from him… Any others out there want to share their thoughts?

  42. That;s nice of you all to reply in that fashion. I never know when I’m out of line, and I try not to be offensive to anyone. All that I have now are memories of incidents in my life ( my kids used to call them adventures, but that;s a bit strong.)

Mostly all occurring as a result of just trying to make a living in a post war era during deep recession….I’d do anything legal to make a buck, and this in turn set out some happenings that I now and then have to wonder if they really happened….but they did.

Know what a gypsy driver was back then? A semi driver who hired out to run loads for an owner operator who had several trucks. I did that for the better part of a year until I got sick of the loneliness, boredom, and yeah danger of it all.

( And oh yes, the meeting of the love of my life,
tbw, (the beautiful wife), and now on our way toward our 57th anniversary come February.

Ive got a few photos that you might find some amusement from, one being me, tbw and my
Mom and Dad taken in the old Polo Grounds at the last home game of the Giants. I’d forgotten about it. I,ll send them on to Carp..he can post them.

  43. fran,

You’re a really awesome person, and like everyone else, would be absolutely thrilled and honored to read a guest blog of yours.

  48. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

I hate summer!! I’m buying stock in “never summer”!!!!

  49. If you’re any kind of sports fan – as obviously all here are – I have to recommend the HBO doc on Curt Flood as a must see.

It’ll bring you to tears see what this guy went through because he believed in what he was doing, which was basically creating free agency (though others waged similar battles).

Basically if you’re glad the Rangers signed Richards, it might’ve never happened without Flood’s contributions.

Me!? Thank you, but you’ve gotta be kidding, E3! Most of the time when I post I hear crickets afterwards! (except when MickeyM is dumping me and Wicky!) ;)

I heartily agree with all your other suggestions, though – and I know fran’s contribution will be great, as always!

  51. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

    eddie x3
I guess I should take solace in the fact that I’m not quite “old” enough to offer the historical perspective!?

  52. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

    AAANNNNNNNNDDD were off!!!!!!!

  53. always, that did it. FOR GOOD.

BTW, Rangers have had a deal on the table for weeks now, though it’ll take till camp to finalize, if it happens. Wanna know the names involved?

    Ask the vermin here.

Carp, Im sure moderating is near the bottom of your fun-things-to-do-list, but you should consider cracking some of your regulars who deserve it.

    It really hurts this blog.

  54. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

still a bit jilted (thanks mickey) and I hate the summer (heat sucks) but other than that, fantastic. If I was any better I would be CCCP!!

    How about yourself??

  55. JimboWoodside on

Rod, I’m sorry for butting in, but you shouldn’t let one bad poster turn you off to the rest of us…

  56. JimboWoodside on

I am, too, Wicky – but ya know, women are fickle (but lovable) creatures! Eddie3 just blew us both out of the water with his Monterey seaside tales! ;)

And after we tried to get her stuffed with pastrami, too – but what are ya gonna do!?

I’m doing OK – I hate the heat, too…’re out in Montana somewhere, right? Is it terribly hot there?

  57. JimboWoodside on

I still think CCCP has one of those houses he’s managing – unlike the one that recently got busted – he’s doing great! ;)

  58. You’re not butting in Jimbo, you were always cool and intelligent, wanting to talk NYR hockey.

To think Ive been banned I dont know how many times and these punks never even got reprimanded is galling & atrocious!

I’m not looking to get into it with Carp about moderating, I know there are no easy answers there. But it’s just too much.

I have friends – who, unlike the freeloaders in their mother’s basemants attacking me – actually work in the National Hockey League – who think Im nuts for posting here!

I did what I could. Lotsa luck.

  59. My ears were ringing so I thought I’d come online and see who was talking about me. Not surprised at who :)

Rod, please, for the love of the hockey gods, tell us what players you are talking about, instead of being obtuse all the time. Might make you more liked in these parts, I think. Then again, that is just one person’s opinion…

  60. JimboWoodside on

Ears ringing eh, MickeyM!? ;) Sorry!

Thanks, Rod – just trying to do my part to keep the peace here – I avoid, whenever possible, getting into fights around here. I don’t see why we have to be disagreeable, but what do I know?

  61. JimboWoodside on

Sorry, 3CP…….didn’t mean to! Maybe I’ll come by sometime, but $10k is a little steep for my budget…. :)

  62. Well, it was either you all or the cell phone attached to my ear for the past 90 minutes. ;)

  63. Speaking of Mondays, I’m going to be the only one in my department tomorrow, so I need to get to bed early, otherwise I’d hang out longer.

Sorry for the quick drive by, but til laters mon amis..

  64. Wicky(grating PIBG)© (The she/it on our D is sofa king SOFT!!!) on

yep, about six weeks or so a year (usually half of July and all of August) suck during the day…in the 90s, it will cool down to the 50s at night though, but the days are pure cooke!!!!

I have to be up at 0500, night assens!!

  65. JimboWoodside on

Goodnight, Wicky – OK on the heat……it’s lousy here in New York, too…

    Thanks, C3! Sounds great!! ;)
